“The biggest thing I took away from last year was just trusting in my team,” Sanger said. “Last year it was hard to trust them, which was a very big mistake. I think I could have done more if I gave them the trust they gave me.”

Caleb Sanger of Hutchinson Trinity was voted the Wichita Small School Preseason Running Back of the Year. Sanger was all-district and honorable mention all-state a year ago. “I feel like my expectations this year is to be the best running back in 1A,” Sanger said. “I have just put a lot of work towards it and gathered a lot of hype because of that.”

El Dorado

Blasi has spent time running routes, lifting, and working with his quarterbacks, in hopes of getting better, faster and stronger for the upcoming season.

“My top goal for the year is definitely a state championship,” Blasi said. “I felt like we were very close last year but there were some injuries that cost us. Secondly, I want to become an overall better leader.”

The Eagles, which finished 11-3 last season, lost to Shawnee-Mill Valley 28-14 in the 5A championship game and Carter has been focusing on that particular loss all offseason. Carter rushed for only 54 yards, while catching one ball for 12 yards in the defeat.

Sanger is optimistic about a successful season for the Celtics this

“I have been preparing by trying to run routes with our quarterbacks as much as possible,” Blasi said. “I felt like I mainly needed to get bigger, faster, and stronger, so I have been working in the weight room and doing speed training so I can do all of those things.” With injuries affecting last season, the Eagles have some unfinished business to attend to this season, including a state title.

“I know that I want to play sports in college but I haven’t made a decision on a school yet,” Blasi said. “As far as career I am looking into something in the sports medical field.” Blasi 300 S Rd, Wichita 316.683.1330 Wichita - 6730 W Central Wichita 316.440.4077 - 1701 W Central Ave, El Dorado 316.452.5522

“I am feeling confident coming into it, even though we have to replace some really good players, I feel like our coaches do a great job getting young guys prepared which will allow those players to do well.” Blasi said.

Daeshaun Carter of Maize was voted the Wichita Large School Preseason Running Back of the Year. Carter was second team all-league and honorable mention all-state last season. “My expectations are to have a better season than last year and do whatever I can to help my team win the state championship,” said Carter.

Blasi does plan on attending college after high school, although undecided where.

“Losing the state championship made me more hungry and more motivated for it this year,” Carter said. Carter felt like his size is something that separates him from other backs, but there is a specific area of his game that he feels he needs to improve in order to go to another level.

In 2021, Sanger rushed for 781 yards and 11 touchdowns for the Celtics, which finished the season 4-5, but he saw a clear weakness he wants to improve on for 2022.

“My weakness was catching the ball out of the back field so I’m practicing to improve that,” Carter said. Carter wants to continue his football career after he graduates from Maize this season and is interested in pursuing a career in business.

“Forseason.the team I think or expectations for the team is winning state,” Sanger said. “We put a lot of time on the field and in the weight room. Everyone brings our own sort of energy, so I feel like no one expects less from us then a state championship.”

“As a team the expectation is a state championship, since we got a taste of going deep into the playoffs last year,” Hamilton said. “In order for us to achieve that goal the whole team needs to do their job, and put in the work, not for themselves but for the person next to them. The expectation that I put on myself would be to do whatever I can to make the team better.”

Dylan Hamilton of Kapaun Mount Carmel was voted the Wichita Large School Preseason Quarterback of the Year. Last season, Hamilton was honorable mention all-state and all“I’mleague.excited to have a year of experience under my belt,” Hamilton said. “I have gained in the weight room over the summer, so I’m super excited to see what this year brings.”

VYPE KANSAS FOOTBALL PREVIEW 2022 | KSVYPE.COM 7

“That motivates the team to strive for that state championship,” Hamilton said. “That game wasn’t on just one person, and it wasn’t just on the offense or defense. We all could have been better and that game left us wanting more for this season.”

Only a sophomore a year ago, Hamilton threw for over 1,000 yards and 14 touchdowns. He said his accuracy is what made him so successful and the one area where he thought he struggled was experience, which he has plenty of now.

The Crusaders had a heartbreaking finish to their season in 2021, as they fell to Maize 22-21 in the 5A semfinals. On one hand, that loss crushed Hamilton and his teammates, but on the other it’s been their sole focus this offseason.

While he still hopes to continue playing football, Clement also wishes to attend Oklahoma State University.

Maize has significant talent returning this season, which means it will be one of the teams to beat in 5A. That pressure does not bother Johnson, “Wethough.are considered the so called ‘team to beat’ because of what we have proved in the past but it’s a new season so none of that matters to us anymore,” Johnson said. “Regardless if we are the favorite or not we will take the season week by week and continue to get better.”

“Taking care of my commitment has definitely been a relief,” Johnson said. “It allows me to be around my teammates even more because I don’t have to take trips every week and it also allows me to focus on the season because I don’t have to worry about recruiting anymore.”

Johnson is third ranked dual-style quarterback in the Class of 2023, according to Rivals, so he was a highly-sought out recruit by several top programs in the country. Choosing Kansas State before the high school season started was important to Johnson.

“I am keeping my options open for upcoming offers from this football season,” Clement said. “But I do have aspirations to attend Oklahoma State University to become a sports broadcaster.”

“I’ve been in the weight room non-stop this summer working and increasing my strength, to better my chances of going up against bigger offensive lineman,” Clement said. “My personal goals for this year are to do a better job of using my footwork and using my hands.”

With the season fastly approaching, Clement is ready for that first game feeling again.

Circle of Stars Football Players of the Month and Players of the Year returns to VYPE! This will be the 4th year of the VYPEevent.will begin recognizing area High School Football Players of the Month for each classification beginning with the September issue. Players will be selected from weekly game performance. The program culminates in December with a awards banquet and reception recognizing Circle of Stars Football Players of the Year! Details on the banquet will be released this fall. The Circle of Stars Academy promotes the growth and development of youth through playing sports, as well as building positive attitudes and values. The academy leaders teach campers basic skills and encourage the development of healthy habits. The goal is to make physical fitness fun for youth and promote overall health and fitness. “We are honored to partner with VYPE magazine for this event again this year. Each year we get the opportunity to meet some of the best football players Kansas has to offer and we are looking forward to another great season.”, says Circle of Stars founder and organizer.

“I am feeling very excited for the season, I just can’t wait to touch the turf and hear that first whistle blown,” Clement said. Clement spent the summer training and prioritizing his strength, preparing for the competition on the offensive line.

“The outcome of the state title game has been great motivation to my teammates and I throughout the offseason but it has not affected my work ethic,” Johnson said. “No matter how the season ended I was going to spend all offseason working to better myself as a player and as a teammate.”

“It feels great knowing that I have been chosen for one of the athletes of the month,” Clement said. “It makes me feel like the work is finally paying off.”

Johnson led the Eagles to the 5A title game a year ago where they fell to Mill Valley.

The 5-foot-5, 160-pound Jones missed time with injury as a freshman on an 0-9 squad in Marcus Bagley’s inaugural season. Jones carries around a 3.5 GPA and enjoys math. Bagley said Jones is never late, encourages others and constantly “being the example for teammates.”

Keiondre Smith from Caldwell was chosen as the SCCDAT Athlete of the Month for August. Smith was a first team all-league and all-state quarterback last season, where he racked up over 2,800 total yards, with 48 touchdowns. Smith led Caldwell to a 8-2 record, before falling to Victoria 58-52 in the 8-Man DII playoffs. This season Smith hopes that last season was just a start for the Blue Jays. “My expectations are very high for this season,” Smith said. “We put a lot of hours in the weight room and on the field over the summer.”

Talent is not a problem for Smith as he is one of the top players in 8-Man Division II, but it’s doing the things that others don’t see that he wants to improve on this season.

Fugarino said the Booster Club is a vital asset to small communities like Clearwater where it can help cover costs within the program.

“I would say one of my strengths as a player is never having the mindset of giving up,” Smith said. “I would say what I need to work on is constantly doing the little things. The one key moment I took from last year was how important doing the little thing every day is important.”

With two sons at Clearwater, Fugarino understands how important it is to support the athletic programs not only financially, but as a fan, too.

Sheila Fugarino of Clearwater was chosen for the Behind the Scenes feature for August. Fugarino has multiple responsibilities within the district, including a secretary at the high school and the Booster Club president. She started working at the high school a year and a half ago. “Some would say I’m able to help because of these positions, but anyone who knows me would say I’m in these positions because I want to help,” Fugarino said. “I’m also fortunate enough to have a husband who works hard to support us so I have the time and ability to help.”

“Fewer and fewer people seem to volunteer anymore, but it’s been proven that extracurricular activities have a positive impact, and if my extra effort helps the team, then in the end, my kids benefit too,” Fugarino said. “No one else can appreciate how much work and effort your kid has put into their activity.”

“I think it really gave me some insight into what kind of a person, teacher and coach I wanted to be,” Melvin said. “I learned alot about life and football at Hutch and played with guys I still talk to today.”

Melvin looks back on how playing at Hutch shaped him into the person he is today.

Melvin transferred to Fort Hays State University in 1995, and three years later took an assistant coaching job at Norton.

“My freshman year I played special teams and back-up corner. We didn’t know we made the bowl game until after our last game, so we went to check-in equipment and then got the call. The bowl game was over Thanksgiving break in Mesa Arizona. My second year I started at corner and played special teams. We made it to the Jayhawk Conference championship game against Garden City. We lost the championship game but made it to another bowl game in Glendale.”

Melvin joined the Blue Dragons’ team in the fall of 1993, where over the next two seasons, he played two bowl games, and a conference championship game.

“I played two seasons at Hutch, it was an awesome experience,” Melvin said. “I played cornerback and special teams there. I was blessed to play for great coaches and with wonderful players.”

Lucas Melvin has been a long time Norton High School football coach. For Melvin, Hutchinson Community College was home for two years.

With only one more year left to play high school football, Smith wants to make sure he leaves his mark not only on himself, but on the team as well, and help lead them far into the playoffs.

Working as hard as possible has been the focus for Cohoon and the rest of the Eagles this offseason and there is a very specific reason why.

“I have very high expectations for our team as a whole this year,” Cohoon said. “We have a lot of returning talent across the board and are looking to capitalize where we couldn’t last season.”

Cohoon has already committed to Syracuse University to continue his football career.

“Between working the two jobs I’ve had, I’ve been lifting hard when I can as well as the little camps our team had,” Smith said. “I even went and played some ball with my brother.”

Bryce Cohoon of Maize was voted the Wichita Large School Preseason Wide Reciever of the Year.

Cohoon was honorable mention all-league last season, where he caught 40 balls for over 800 yards and seven touchdowns.

“My goals this next year is to truly step up as a leader and lead this team to some wins,” Smith said. “I’d like to see us make it to the playoffs.”

Donald Collier of Wichita Trinity was voted the Wichita Small School Preseason Wide Receiver of the Year. Collier was an honorable mention all-league selection last season, where he caught 46 balls for over 500 Collieryards.thinks he has more to offer as a player than just stats and accolades.

“I have strong leadership skills but, in the past, I have struggled with staying positive in the face of adversity,” Collier said. “I use my leadership skills in ways to help my teammates get better whether it’s mentally or physically better. To work on my weaknesses, I have been thinking about the outcome more than the moment because at the time something may be bad or upsetting but, in the end, it could be for something better.”

“Coming off of last year’s loss in the state championship has given the entire team a reason to put in extra work in the off season,” Cohoon said.

Tucker Smith of Minneapolis was chosen as the American Family Insurance Athlete of the Month. With the long season ahead, Smith is ready to enjoy his senior year no matter the challenges thrown at the team.

Smith not only has high hopes for the season, but for his future after high school too. “I plan on going to Kansas State Salina to go into tech repair and later into business,” Smith said. “I plan on opening my own tech repair shop.”

“As a receiver my biggest strength is definitely my speed,” Cohoon said.

With improved statistics, Collier thinks he and Trinity can improve on last season’s disappointing 1-8 record. A new coaching staff and returning talent and contributing newcomers will also play a factor.

“I’m feeling excited but I know that we will have many challenges,” Smith said. “It will be fun, that’s for Duringsure.”

“A key moment was the very last play of our very last game last year I was two yards short of scoring what could have been the game winning touchdown,” Collier said. “It motivates me to never put our team in that position again with a team we should’ve beat by a lot.”

the offseason, Smith has spent as much time as possible putting in work for the upcoming season.

“With our four-receiver set it definitely helps keep the defense on their toes and set up opportunities to break coverages.”

SCOTT AUSHERMANS’ AMERICAN FAMILY SPOTLIGHT

“We are going to try and put all the pieces together to get back to the state game and come out with a win this time.”

Offensively, Notre Dame-commit Dylan Edwards will be the focal point, but he will have to run behind an inexperienced offensive line. Defensively, the Panthers are going to be particularly strong. Defensive lineman Samuel Same, linebackers Miles Wash and Cade Shelton and defensive back Demaria’e Baker form a dynamic quartet of playmakers. The west side of the 6A bracket goes through Derby. With a return to Class 6A, Wichita Northwest figures to be one of the teams that challenges Derby in the west side of the playoff bracket. Between running backs L.J. Phillips and Cencere Thompson and wide receiver Michael Lopez, the Grizzlies have an explosive trio of playmakers. They also have three offensive linemen returning, including all-league selection Jacob Lamb. On defense, eight starters return, including first team all-league lineman Caden Ross. Northwest is primed for a deep run in the playoffs.

With 14 starters returning, Wichita East is looking to build off last season’s six-win season. Quarterback Daeonte Mitchell is one of the most dynamic playmakers in the area, as he finished last season with over 20 touchdowns. On defense, Omari Wishom looks to emerge as one of the better defensive backs in the area after getting honorable mention all-state recognition a year ago. Wichita Heights returns playmakers all over the field from a five-win team. On offense, there might not be a better duo than quarterback D.J. Dingle and running back John Randle Jr., who is getting significant Division I interest. All three linebackers return on defense, including Isaiah Yehudah, who was a second team all-league selection. Campus won just one game last season, but the Colts return 13 starters, including linebacker Christian Sicard, who was an all-league selection last season. Campus will have a chance to improve on its win total.

Former Bishop Carroll standout, Aiden Niedens, is entering his second season at Iowa Western Community College. Last season, Niedens was the scout team quarterback but will be competing for the starting position his sophomore season.

Niedens got his first start at quarterback his sophomore year after Bishop Carroll lost its starter and backup to injuries. It didn’t take long for the coaching staff at Bishop Carroll to realize they had something special in Niedens. He started six games that season, finishing with 1,750 passing yards, 17 touchdowns through the air while adding 380 yards and a score on the ground.

“I learned the offense playing on the scout team last season,” Niedens said. “I’ve been learning in the film room to better read the defenses and I’ve been working on making quicker decisions.”

By Chad Waters

Niedens entered his freshman season at Bishop Carroll at 5-foot-10, 140-pounds. Niedens was just starting to work out but was struggling to gain weight until he met Supplement World coowner, Jeff McAnarney.

Niedens ended his sophomore season against City League rival, Northwest, in a postseason slugfest that would combine for 151 points, which is a Kansas Class 5A playoff record. Niedens threw for 600 yards and seven touchdowns in an 84-67 loss to Northwest. Niedens finished his career at Bishop Carroll with 4,600 passing yards, 40 passing touchdowns, and 20 more scores on the ground. In his final season, Niedens made 1st Team All-City and 2nd Team All-State.

After his sophomore season at Iowa Western, Niedens wants to pursue a degree in business or construction while continuing to compete on the football field. Niedens credits his dad, Matt, who also played quarterback at Bishop Carroll, for being an inspiration on and off the field. “My dad has coached me since I was in second grade and taught me everything I know about playing the quarterback position,” Niedens said. “He’s just helped me through so much, and I wouldn’t be here without him.”

“Jeff told me to come stop by the store, and he hooked me up with a couple of supplements,” Niedens said. “I went there every year to get my stuff and finished high school at 180-pounds. Supplement World is the real deal.”

“My speed is my biggest strength, allowing me to cover the eld on defense and be a reliable target,” Albright said. “Defensively I’m constantly lling the alley and am not scared of contact. As far as weaknesses, weighing more and getting bigger in the weight room is something I’ve focused on this summer.”

Avrey Albright of Kingman was chosen as the Hog Wild Performer of the Month for August. Albright was a rst team all-state defensive back a year ago, where recorded 55 total tackles, four pass break ups, three forced fumbles, two interceptions and a blocked kick.

After high school, Albright plans to pursue track in college and study business.

“My personal goal for this upcoming season is just to be a better player than I was last year. Our team goals this year is just to win games and enjoy playing for one another.”

There are some holes to fill on defense, but first team all-league linebacker Nathan Fury is back. Slade,

Three-sport standout Cameron Bowyer enters his senior season at Valley Center High School ready to take on a tough schedule with the hopes of improving from last season under head coach Scott L’Ecuyer. Bowyer said he and his teammates are ready to take the field and get the season started.

Straub said nobody loses in this situation, because more people will now likely show up than just fans of either school. “Further, by demonstrating the flexibility that Riverfront can provide, it seems that there may be other ‘classic rivalries’ that could be included at Riverfront in the future,” Straub said. “The more the stadium is used, the greater value it provides.”

The hope is that Riverfront Stadium can host games often after the Wind Surge’s season is over and the Carroll-Kapaun matchup can be viewed as an audition of sorts for future contests.

Riverfront Stadium hosted a junior college football game in the fall of 2021, so both Kapaun and Carroll knew the game was plausible.

“Obviously, locker rooms, who will sit where, concessions, admissions, etc. are always important details to coordinate but we do that on a weekly basis in every high school sport,” Kapaun Athletic Director Marty Straub said. “Tyler and Mr. Kobritz were good to work with regarding these details and we’ll replicate their work in the fall of 2023 when KMC is the home team. We’ll adjust and make any needed changes after we experience our first game this fall.”

In his free time Bowyer enjoys listening to music and playing video game when he’s not lifting weights.

Riverfront Stadium, the home of the Wichita Wind Surge, will be hosting its first high school football game this fall, as the “Holy War” between Kapaun Mount Carmel and Bishop Carroll will take place on Friday, October 7 at the new ballpark. At this time, it is a two-year agreement, with Carroll the home team this season and Kapaun being the home team in 2023.

The fullback and linebacker is a member of the varsity wrestling team once football season comes to an end and track and field in the spring. Bowyer is Senior Class President and has big plans once his high school days come to an end.

“Wichita Driving School taught me a lot and they fit with my busy schedule,” said Bowyer. “I really enjoyed them teaching me the rules of the road.”

“I think this will great for local high school football,” Frazier said. “By hosting this large of an event at Riverfront Stadium, it will show that the staff at Riverfront and the city of Wichita can bring more events in just like this.”

Holy War comes to Riverfront Stadium

“I started talking with Jordan Kobritz (Wind Surge partner and CEO) about possibly having a game at Riverfront Stadium last fall,” Bishop Carroll Athletic Director Tyler Frazier said. “They contacted me about our thoughts of playing a game at Riverfront Stadium and it was something that we thought would be a great experience for our players, fans and the city of Wichita. At that time, we only knew it could happen after October 1 because of the restrictions they have from MLB.”

Bowyer and his family decided to attend the Wichita Driving School where Bowyer gained the knowledge and experience, he needed to pass his drivers exam.

“Something I love about my team is that they are like family to me, and they hold me and everyone accountable,” said Bowyer.

“After I graduate, I would like to play football in college and then go on to coach and teach high school and just climb the coaching ladder and go to the next level,” said Bowyer. Like many of his peers, Bowyer went through a driving school to get his license.

“I love how supportive the community is to our team,” said OnceHubbard.hishigh school playing days are over, Hubbard said he would like to attend college and become a physical therapist.

There is never a lack of excitement coming into a new season for Derby High School and their fans. This season head coach Brandon Clark has a few adjustments to make but is confident his guys can get the job done. One player looking to step up and take on more responsibility is running back Derek Hubbard. Hubbard, a 5-foot-8, 170-pound junior has shown he can be a go-to player in the backfield for Derby. His passion for the game and his teammates drive him to leave every ounce of energy on the field.

The Greater Wichita YMCA’s Job Prep program, which kicked off its 2022 classes in February, culminated with a celebration for its 89 students on Thursday, August 4 at the Wichita Boathouse. Job Prep is a free program offered to 15-17-year-olds that is made possible by generous support from Koch Industries, a sponsor since its inception in 2008, and donations to the Y’s Strong Community Campaign.

This year, in-person Job Prep sites were expanded from the Downtown and Steve Clark Y branches to also include five Wichita Public Schools high schools (North, South, West, Southeast, Heights) and Goddard Academy. The school districts’ enthusiasm to partner and willingness to make adjustments to schedules made it possible for students to conveniently attend Job Prep sessions in their own schools.

Riley Marx of Andale was chosen as the All Seasons Letterman of the Month for August. Marx is a standout football player and wrestler for the Indians. Last season, Marx was a first team all-league and all-state selection in football, took second in the 220 weight class division at the 4A state wrestling tournament and was the state champion in the discus and javelin at state track.

While Marx is open to throwing in college or playing football, he is soley focused on the Indians’ football team defending their state title.

Marx describes himself as a fearless player, who is willing to take on any opponent. “I would say that I am a very physical player that loves contact and isn’t afraid of anybody,” Marx said. “I think of myself of being able to do a lot on any unit whether that be specials or offense or defense.”

“Our team goal is the same as it has always been and what we continue to strive for, a state championship, we continue to do that because of the selfless kind of players we have who are willing to do what a lot of people don’t want to,” Marx said. “Our mentality is always focused on the next game no matter the opponent, not overlooking anybody.”

Outside of football, Sicard is also involved in Channel 060 and baseball. Sicard hopes to further his football career on a scholarship.

HELLAS FIELD OF THE MONTH

While ground was just recently broken on the facility in early June, Backus has been impressed with the experience with Hellas, specifically the customer service.

Christian Sicard of Campus High School had a significant junior season, being named a first team all-league defensive back for the Colts. This season, Sicard hopes to build off of last season’s successes, and show everyone how much the team has matured.

The McPherson School District was chosen as the recipient for the Hellas Construction feature for August. Hellas is building a new turf field and track and field complex for McPherson High School.

“My goal this season is to get better as a player and as a team,” Sicard said. “I expect to get some more wins this year.”

“The Hellas team has been easy to work with, they regularly meet with us to go over details and gather feedback,” Backus said. “Every interaction has been extremely professional.”

In preparation for the upcoming season, Sicard has spent his time working with the team to better himself and his game.

“McPherson USD 418 explored several options,” McPherson athletic director Shane Backus said. “Hellas has a good reputation for doing quality work and vast experience building athletic facilities.”

“My goal is to go to college on a football scholarship and study in business,” Sicard said. “I’m just not sure what career I want to go into.”

Backus said it is wise to consider all options before hiring out a project like this, and USD 418 was thorough in its investigation, but with that said, Hellas would be his top choice if recommending to other districts.

“I’m feeling good,” Sicard said. “We have gotten even better from last year and I’m hoping we can show everyone what type of team we are.” Sicard hopes to better the team’s record this year, while growing as a player on and off the field.

“Always do your research, but if your school is interested in a company with experience that treats their customers right, Hellas would be a great option,” Backus said.

“Camps and weights go throughout the summer until the first games in the Fall,” Sicard said. “I’ve been working hard on and off the field to get stronger and faster.”

After winning two games in the playoffs last year, Mulvane looks to replace plenty of starters, especially on defense where only four starters return. Quarterback Julien Myers will need to lean on an offensive line that returns four starters, including Kaiden Abasolo. “I think the thing that motivates me is the thought that we came short last year at state, and how much it hurt to lose that game,” Thrush said. “Now I want to finish what we started.”

Mason Thrush from Maize was voted the Wichita Large School Preseason Offensive Lineman of the Year. Thrush was an honorable mention all-league selection for the Eagles last season and is currently being recruited by multiple Division I programs. He allowed just one sack last season.

Losing in the state title game last season has been something Thrush has thought about often this offseason.

“An individual expectation I have for myself is to leave no regrets,” Lopez said. “I have one last high school season, so I want to use it to my advantage by having fun and playing the game I love in front of a great community.”

Angel Lopez of Remington was voted the Wichita Small School Preseason Offensive Lineman of the Year. Lopez was first team all-league and all-district last season for the Broncos.

“I knew that being on that field wasn’t going to heal my hurt, but it was going to help me keep pushing and keep my family going as well,” Lopez said. “My brother wasn’t just my brother, he was my best friend, teammate and much more…and in my heart I know that throughout my football journey I will have my brother by my side every step of the way.”

While Lopez has the physical tools necessary to be a dominating offensive lineman, he feels like there is an additional area of his game that is a strength. “Personally, I think that one of my biggest strengths apart from being very physical is just my knowledge,” Lopez said. “I feel like I can read defensive fronts very well and give out the right calls to my offensive line.”

“We have some very skilled position players and some young skill players that will be counted on to play. We will be young up front but we have some solid returning players to help anchor our line and be mentors to younger players.”

Lopez and his family have had to deal with significant tragedy over the last year, as his brother, who would have been a senior, was killed in a car accident. But Lopez, while still grieving the loss of his brother, turned to the game he loved to help alleviate the pain.

4A

Some of Thrush’s best attributes are his football IQ and his field vision. But there are still some areas he would like to improve on.

Thrush has made significant improvement each season with the Eagles and he has even bigger plans this season.

While the success and accolades are something Myears and the Wildcats enjoy year in and year out, the head coach likes to take a long-term view of what quantifies success.

Mulvane lost a significant amount of talent off that roster, but head coach Daniel Myears does not think that changes how he and his program view this season’s expectations.

VisitWichita.com | 800.288.9424

“We love the ‘ole names change but expectations don’t’ mantra,” Myears said. “We want to win AVCTL DIII and we want to finish top four in 4A west.”

Parents, coaches, principals, teachers and fans can nominate a deserving team by contacting Mike Cooper at 316.218.3579 or Mike.cooper@vype.com

“Offensively we return four offensive linemen,” Myears said. “We are going to lean on them to get us through some early weeks as we get our identity set with our skill kids.”

While the Wildcats will depend on new faces for skill positions on offense, they do possess significant talent returning on the offensive line with Kaiden Abasolo, Ethan Tharp, Austin Vanderhoof and Andy Huynh returning.

The Mulvane football team was chosen as the Visit Wichita Team of the Month for August. The Wildcats finished last season with a record of 8-3 and advanced to the sectional round of the 4A playoffs.

Andale, the defending 3A champion, brings back 12 starters, including multiple all-state selections. Running back Cody Parthemer and Riley Marx will lead an offense that scored over 53 points per game a year ago. Also back is quarterback Wyatt Spexarth. Even with so many players back on offense, it’s the Indian defense that might be even better. Parthemer, Marx and Spexarth, along with Kelby Eck, Jonah Meyer and Tegan Orth will lead the way for a unit that allowed 5.2 points per game. Andale will be the team to beat in 3A. Wichita Collegiate figures to be one of the top teams in Class 3A with 14 starters returning. Most notably for the Spartans is the return of Kansas State commit Wesley Fair, who will play quarterback and defensive back. Also returning is defensive lineman Connor Gagnon and offensive lineman Brett Black—both all-league selections last season. Collegiate has the talent to advance deep into the playoffs. Nine starters are back on both sides of the ball for Smoky Valley, so the Vikings figure to be a team that can advance far in the 3A playoffs. Justice Autry and Kade Blanchat form a powerful duo at running back, while on defense, two linebackers – Austin Sharp and Trystan Stambaugh – will lead a deep and experienced unit Only four starters come back for Cheney, which went 10-1 last season. Wide receiver and linebacker Jack Voth returns for the Cardinals.

Besides being the best leader he can be for his team, another goal Neuse-Rasmussen is working towards is playing smart football.

“I have seen a lot of energy from my teammates this off season and everyone on the field is excited to play and I’m excited to see it,” said Clark. “I love getting hyped up with my teammates in the locker room getting ready for the game ahead.”

“A huge influence in my life on and off the field are my dad and uncles. For teaching me and guiding me throughout the years,” said Clark.

“I am feeling great about this upcoming season,” Cole said. “We lost a lot of seniors this last year, a great class that was in front of us and now our class and the upcoming juniors need to step Coleup.” has been training and putting in work any time he can, hoping to make a big impact on the field.

“I’ve been preparing for this upcoming season by working in the weight room, eating right, and doing extra when I can,” Cole said. “I would say a weakness I want to improve would be defending the pass and getting more reps on offense.”

A three-year starter for Central, Clark said his dad and uncles have played a big role in his life and helping him learn from his mistakes.

“One thing I took away from past years is that defense is really the backbone of a team and wins you games as we had one of the top defenses in our league and won a lot of games by being able to hold teams to lower scores,” Cole said.

Inman’s 2021 season was one to remember, and Neuse-Rasmussen was more than grateful to be a part of it.

“I feel that I am a leader, and want to teach the underclassmen what I have been taught over the years,” Neuse-Rasmussen said. “As for me personally, my goals for this season are to be the best that I can be and that entails, not allowing any sacks and not receiving any flags.”

Preparing for his senior year, Cole looked back on his past years and how they’ve all led up to this season.

“Last year Inman had its greatest football season in school history,” NeuseRasmussen said. “I got to be a part of that, and I am truly blessed and proud that I was. I have amazing coaches and teammates that made me the player that I am today.” Neuse-Rasmussen would like to play football in college, but his course of study is yet undecided.

Dominic Neuse-Rasmussen of Inman was voted a defensive line poll winner. NeuseRasmussen has hopes to take his team and himself all the way this season.

After graduation, Cole has a desire to continue his athletic and academic careers.

Central head coach Mark Sandbo said Clark is one of the players that brings experience and leadership to the field. Being part of this team and competing is what football is all about for Clark.

“What I love most about my team is the friendships made and brotherhood within our team,” said Clark. “What makes Central a great place is how many opportunities it opens up for each student and the care given to those students.”

“I have been waiting for my senior year season since my freshman year and can’t wait for it to start,” said Clark.

Clark said he has been impressed with the energy and excitement the team has shown leading up the start of the new season.

“My expectations for this upcoming football season are to win every district game and win our district,” Neuse-Rasmussen said. “I also want to go to state again, only this time, win it.”

“How I’ve been preparing for this season is the same way as I did last year, working everyday in the offseason leading up to that first game,” Miranda said. “Something I chose I wanted to work on as an individual is using my hands better to get off a block.”

“I have been hitting the weight room pretty hard this summer, also standing up and being a leader for my teammates,” Worrell said.

Fair is committed to Kansas State University for football, and wishes to play for as long as possible after high school.

Wesley Fair, a Wichita Collegiate athlete, has played football all three years of high school, and is preparing for the upcoming year. The Spartan threw for 1,500 yards and had 22 touchdowns in the 2021 season.

Senior Gavin Worrell of Bluestem is feeling confident about the upcoming season, and with Bluestem’s growing numbers, the defensive line poll winner is ready to take on the field again.

“As a team we want to win a state championship next season so I will do everything possible to make that happen,” Fair said.

“I’m feeling confident in my team to work hard everyday and push themselves to be the best so we can see a state run again as last year,” Miranda said.

Miranda plans to go to school and earn a business degree, and then continue school to become an electrician after that.

“For this upcoming season I have really been focusing on my safety skills,” Fair said. “I am looking to be really solid defensively while also making some big plays.”

Miranda not only has goals for himself, but also for his team to excel in the playoffs.

“To be chosen for this is really something special because it shows the hard work I have been putting into my game,” Fair said. “I am so excited about this upcoming season because I know all the hard work and extra hours my team and teammates have put in will pay off.”

“We had a rough season last year,” Worrell said. “One thing I took away from last year was never giving up. Even when things are rough and not going the way you expected, still give 100 percent until the end.”

“My weaknesses would definitely be my open-field speed and acceleration,” Neal said. “I use my good route running ability by winning most one-on-one press situations and being a threat all the time. And what I’ve been doing to improve my speed is hitting the field a lot this summer and doing speed drills and quick burst practice.”

L.J. Phillips of Wichita Northwest was chosen as the Shelter Insurance Athlete of the Month for August. Phillips was a first team all-league and all-state running back last season for the Grizzlies, where he rushed for over 2,200 yards. The season in heartbreaking fashion for Phillips as he tore his ACL and MCL in the Grizzlies playoff game against Kapaun Mount Carmel. But that injury provided a different prospective for Phillips, as he begins his senior season.

“It showed me don’t take this game for granted because it can be taken away from you anytime,” Phillips said. “I’m glad it happened because it changed my mind set about hard work and how bad do you want it. It also showed me how to be patient and knowing it’s going be a long process. I’m just blessed to say that I’m healthy and will be able to play my first game of my senior year. God is good.”

It was a tough ending for Neal last season, as he did not play well in the Titans’ playoff loss to Lawrence Free State. He has vowed to not let that happen again.

Caiden Neal of Wichita South was chosen as the Shelter Insurance Athlete of the Month for August. Neal was a second team all-league wide receiver for the Titans, where he caught 29 passes for over 300 yards and six touchdowns.

“My expectations for this upcoming season are to, most importantly, get better as an individual and excel in the weak spots of my game,” Neal said. “And as a team I definitely expect a better year than last year record-wise. I expect us to bring a lot more intensity towards games then we used to in the past years and open the city’s eyes.” Neal said his strengths are running good routes, as well as the ability to get open. He has been working on a couple of aspects for his game for the upcoming season.

“I’ll never forget the feeling that I had because this was my older brother TJ’s last high school game and I felt like I let him down,” Neal said. “So, I promised I’d step up and not let my team down like I did ever again.”

Plenty of points will be scored by the Trojans. The same quartet will also be fixtures on the defensive side of the ball, where Southeast brings back seven starters. It will be interesting to see what the Trojans can do in their first season in Class 2A. Chaparral had its best season since 2016, going 8-2 a year ago. While the Roadrunners graduated some talent off that team, the cupboard isn’t bare by any stretch. Wide receiver Jackson Swartz is a freak athlete and combine him with running back Austin Clark, receiver Jack Francis and running back Aiden Guy and Chaparral has one of the most potent offenses in 2A. It is easy to see a scenario where the Roadrunners advance further in the playoffs in 2022. Over the past four seasons, Hillsboro went 28-13, but many of those players have graduated, so there are plenty of questions marks for the Trojans this year. The versatile Nicholas Smith is back at wide receiver and defensive back. Todd Rice is in his first season at Garden Plain and he will have to depend on plenty of new faces to get the Owls to a winning record. What makes Beloit’s running game so scary is two all-league offensive linemen are also back in Grady Seyfert and Brody Widrig. Seyfert will be one of the top defensive linemen in 2A this season, while Arasmith and Quinn Eilert will be a scary tandem in the secondary. Beloit looks poised to get back to the title game again. The biggest threat to Beloit in 2A will be Kingman, which lost to the Trojans in the semifinals a year ago. Quarterback Nolan Freund is back for the Eagles, as well as skill-position players Carter Helm and Avrey Albright. Scoring points will not be a problem for Kingman. For as good as the offense will be, the Eagles will have an exceptional unit on defense. Albright was all-state at defensive back last season and joining him will be first team all-league selections in defensive lineman Jake Fischer and linebacker Ty Birkenbaugh. KANSAS FOOTBALL PREVIEW POLL WINNERS

“We’ve had a pretty busy summer getting ready for this year,” Francis said. “Six in the morning workouts, conditioning, and practice all getting us in shape for the season.” Making a deep run in the playoffs and getting to play some November ball is on Francis’s mind this season.

Connor Padgett of Maize has been putting in work for the upcoming season, and knows it’s quickly approaching. After the unfortunate loss the team had in the state championship game last year, Padgett is confident that this season will be different.

Gagnon and the Spartans’ main goal is not only to compete for a state title, but also win the title. From previous seasons, Gagnon knows that when playoffs begin, the pressure is on.

Gagnon has been working on his skills on and off the field, in hopes of bettering himself and his team for the nearing season.

Francis has many options for his future, and plans to decide closer to “I’mgraduation.notcompletely sure what I’m going to do after high school yet,” Francis said. “I either want to go to Kansas State or play football at a smaller school, depending on what I can do this season. After that, I’ll come back home and run the family farm.”

Chaparral’s Jack Francis was voted a defensive back poll winner. Francis isn’t only excited about the approaching season, but also the new competition the Roadrunners’ will get to face.

“We have a great summer lifting and conditioning program that has gotten me ready,” Padgett said. Last year, Padgett had a record breaking season, including breaking the school record for the number of tackles in a season. This year, Padgett hopes to build on some of his successes from his junior year.

Collegiate senior Conner Gagnon is feeling optimistic about the upcoming season, with players coming back with varsity knowledge, and younger players working to show out on the field. “I am feeling great about this upcoming season,” Gagnon said. “We have a good group of seniors with lots of varsity experience returning as well as some younger guys who should be able to step up this year.”

“My future plans are to wrestle in college and get my degree in nursing,” Padgett said.

“I am feeling pretty great about the upcoming season,” Heidebrecht said. “Both sides of the ball are looking good this season. I’m excited for my senior year and getting to play in 6A. I’m excited to see what this year has in store for me.”

“I have been training all summer with two great trainers, and trying to make it to as many camps as possible,” Heidebrecht said. “A weakness that I feel I need to improve on is being more of a vocal leader on and off the Whilefield.”preparing for the upcoming season, Heidebrecht made goals in hopes of achieving them for his last year under the lights.

“First team all-state, defensive player of the year, and to win the state championship,” Heidebrecht said. “Of course the goal is to win, but also to remain focused and strong as a team.”

“We have been working hard all summer to improve on our season last year,” Gagnon said. “I feel like we underperformed last year and we have made it a point to do anything we need to play into the end of WhileNovember.”uncertain about a career path, Gagnon wishes to continue playing football in college if a good fit is found for him.

“Super, super pumped about this season,” Francis said. “Bringing back lots of two and three year starters with tons of experience on both sides of the ball. Also a couple new teams on the schedule that are gonna be fun Francisgames.”was first team all-league and all-district last season, and hoping to keep his name out there, Francis and the team have been working all summer for the upcoming season.

“It sucks to lose a state championship game, we will be back to win it this year,” Padgett said. The team and Padgett have been training all offseason in the weight room, preparing for this fall.

Ben Heidebrecht of Wichita Northwest was a second team all-city safety his junior year, and hopes to build on his successes for his last year as a Grizzly.

Heidebrecht spent the offseason training and attending camps, while also preparing for his leadership role on the team.

“One lesson I learned from last season is you have to push yourself into a different gear in the playoffs,” Gagnon said. “Teams like Andale at the top of 3A improve significantly as the season progresses and thrive late in the season. We need to continue to get better every week, so that we are ready to compete late in the season.”

“Some of our goals as a team are to go back to the state championship game and win it this year and for myself I would like to be an All State player again,” Padgett said. While being a threat on the football field, Padgett is also a reigning state champ on the wrestling mat. Next year, Padgett plans to continue to wrestle in college.

“I’d say our goals are pretty similar to most teams,” Francis said. “We definitely want to win a district and league championship, as well as making a deep run in the playoffs at least.”

Those feelings have led to motivated workouts this summer.

Even with significant talent graduating, Derby is poised to be one of the top teams in Class 6A again. But those expectations come with the territory of being a player for the Panthers.

“Football lights a fire for me inside and you never know when it’s going to be your last,” Guy said. “So, this coming season for my senior year I plan on taking in all these feelings and let my fire burn on the field hoping to lead my team to success.”

Maize fell in the 5A title game last season and Stephens and his teammates want to take the necessary steps each week to make sure they can play for a championship again.

“(I needed) to get bigger and stronger in the weight room,” Edwards said.

“As a team I hope we can build off each week and get better and better throughout the season and hopefully make it back to that state championship,” Stephens said. “For myself I just want to make sure I am doing my job every play, of every drive, of every game.”

Aiden Guy of Chaparral was voted the Wichita Small School Preseason Special Teams Player of the Year. Guy went 23 for 26 in extra point and field goal attempts last season for the Road

HisRunners.goalfor the season is to improve on those numbers.

Dues to how good Maize is defensively, Stephens did not get many opportunities to return kick offs, but just being a threat is scary enough for opponents.

“I feel no pressure,” Edwards said. “I know how hard we work as a team and I feel if we stay consistent, we will go to state again.”

Justin Stephens of Maize was voted the Wichita Large School Preseason Special Teams Player of the Year. Stephens, who is also a starting wide receiver for the Eagles, is a versatile threat every time he touches the ball.

“I can finally lock in for the season and help my team get to the state championship,” Edwards said.

“A weakness I have would have to be my speed,” Stephens said. “I have never been a really fast guy. One of my strengths is I can feel the field when I am playing and adjust to my teammates. Summer is where all the work gets put in and you just got to carry that into the season.”

Stephens has been focusing on combining his intellect for the game, with his ability in order to become a better player this season.

Dylan Edwards of Derby was chosen as the Shelter Insurance Spotlight Athlete for August. Edwards was a first team all-league and all-state running back a year ago and recently committed to Notre Dame. He rushed for over 2,600 yards and 38 touchdowns in 2021.

The Panthers lost to Blue Valley Northwest in the 6A title game last year, which ended a three-year state championship streak. Edwards said that has been a topic of conversation over the past few months.

“The loss definitely motivates everyone on our team,” Edwards said. “We never want to feel that feeling of losing this coming year.”

HeRunners.hasbeen working on all facets of his game for the upcoming season.

Now that Edwards has committed to the Fighting Irish, he can shift his focus to the upcoming season.

“I utilize my strengths on defense as middle linebacker reacting towards the backfield and on offense as running back, choosing the right hole. My weakness is my speed. I have been doing isometric lifts all summer to build strength in my legs to improve my speed.” Guy got hurt in the playoffs last season, so he was unable to play in nearly two of those games. That gave him some time to reflect on what football means to him.

Edwards has elite speed, which makes him elusive in the open field. Add in increased size and he becomes nearly unstoppable.

“That was a big thing my coach instilled in me early this year.”

“My expectation for myself is to go at least 95 percent from kicking field goal and extra points,” Guy said. Playing for a small school like Chaparral, Guy is asked to do plenty of things besides kick. He is also a starting running back and linebacker for the Road

“My strengths are kicking and being able to see the field whole field and read plays quick because I’m not the fastest guy so I have to react quick,” Guy said.

“My expectations for this upcoming season are to battle adversity when it hits throughout the season,” McVicker said. “As a team I want to see how some of the younger guys handle adversity. I believe with the coaching staff that we have; we will get it done on Friday nights.”

Poll

Conner McVicker of McPherson was one of the top offensive linemen in the Salina Area last season, as he was a second team all-league selection. McVicker tallied 54 pancake blocks for the Bullpups a year ago.

“One thing I took away from last year is to never get too comfortable as a defense, Neills said. “I feel like there were many times as a defense that we got too comfortable and let up plays that shouldn’t have happened. I think that’s a big thing to teach the younger players as we get into the season, to never get too comfortable or you’re going to get caught sleeping.”

Goessel lost to Meade in the sectional round of the playoffs and Wiens wants to improve the team chemistry for this season.

While Neill is a solid player, with number to back it up, he spent the offseason trying to be a better athlete.

Conner Neill of Maize South was chosen for the Shelter Insurance Athlete of the Month for August. He was an honorable mention all-league and all-state selection last year, where he racked up 70 tackles, 11 tackles for a loss, four forced fumbles and three fumble

“I feel like my biggest strengths during the season is getting after it every play and trying to create opportunities for my running back and my quarterback,” McVicker said. “One thing that I have really engraved in my head is that things aren’t always going to go your way. Things aren’t always easy, but it’s what you do with the situation to create a positive outcome.”

Poll GoesselJakeWinner:Wiens VYPE KANSAS FOOTBALL PREVIEW 2022 | KSVYPE.COM 55

“I would say one of my weaknesses is also a strength,” Wiens said.

McPherson lost some key players from last season, so while there is a good deal of talent returning, McVicker knows there could be some bumps in the road throughout the season.

Jake Wiens of Goessel was one of the top running backs in 8-Man Division last season as he rushed for over 1,200 yards and 27 touchdowns, along with two passing touchdowns.

McVicker hopes to continue his football career next year at Pittsburg State, where he we wants to pursue a career in construction science and commercial construction management.

“Something I took away from last season is learning to play as a team will give us more success,” Wiens said. “None of us can do it all alone and everyone has their role.”

“I expect that we will have a similar year to last year in terms of record and playoffs especially with our experienced backfield,” Wiens said. “For myself I expect to improve from last year and have better knowledge and overall game on both sides of the ball.”

“That is that I sometimes attack too hard and let my instincts take over. But it is not always a bad thing to not think and just do on the field for me.”

“Myrecoveries.expectations for myself are to be the best leader that I can be on and off the field for my teammates and classmates,” Neill said. “I’m expecting to have a really good season this year and I’m extremely excited for it.”

“I think I’m a pretty balanced player,” Neill said. “I’ve got strength, speed, including good lateral speed and physicality. This offseason I’ve been training hard to improve on my overall athleticism.”

Conner Neill Maize South

Neill learned some lessons last season as one of the leaders of the Mavericks’ defense and he hopes to teach those lessons to some of the younger players this season.

One of Wiens strengths is how instinctual he is on the field, but at the same time, he also feels like it’s a weakness, too.

The Knights have struggled in recent memory, going a combined 4-32 over the past four seasons. But there is plenty of excitement around the program this fall.

“This season, expectations for Trinity football are higher than they have been in the past,” Zimmerman said. “Under a new, experienced coaching staff and a talented incoming class, with key players returning, it’s looking Zimmermanup.”

Harvey Zimmerman of Trinity Academy was voted the Wichita Small School Preseason Quarterback of the Year. Last season, Zimmerman racked up over a combined 1,800 yards and 12 touchdowns threw the air and on the ground.

“As a quarterback I find my strengths on the move escaping pocket pressure,” Zimmerman said. “However, my weakness comes in knowing when to roll out and when to stay in and move up. I think with a stronger receiving core and new offense, we will be able to utilize hands and speed when the fall rolls around.”

“The group of guys we have this year might be the most dedicated I have ever seen because as a whole we do not ever want to feel those same feelings from last year again,” Zimmerman said.

Kindt said his family is very important to him and one person in his family has played a huge role in his life and former players as well.

“The two biggest influences have been past seniors and my dad. My dad was always there to watch me fail, let it happen and then pick me up and show me how to correct the previous mistake. And past seniors have made me who I am today just by leading positively and showing me how to lead better,” said CongratulationsKindt.to Ryan Kindt of Maize South High School for being recognized as the Old Chicago Athlete of the Month.

“What I love most about Friday nights is the atmosphere, when the lights turn on the energy goes from a 10 to a 20 and never goes down,” said Kindt.

“The number one thing I love about my teammates is they always work hard and come to every event practice session of weights it doesn’t matter when or where they’ll be there and that’s hard to find, these guys give everything they got to the team, Maize South is a great place because there’s no cliques, everybody is friends with everybody in and out of school,” said Kindt. “I have never been more excited to start a season this is a special group of guys that can go far.”

After long hours in the gym and a competitive offseason, Ryan Kindt of Maize South High School is ready to put that hard work to the test every Friday night as a member of the tenaciousKindtfootballvarsityteam.isaplayer and according to head coach Brent Pfeifer, Kindt has turned into one of the leaders of this team.

Cooper Tabor

Cooper Tabor of Andover Central was chosen as the Shelter Insurance Athlete of the Month. Tabor is optimistic about the upcoming season.

“I hope to play football in college,” Hartman said. “I’m still trying to figure out what majors I want to pursue or what jobs I’m interested in.”

While Tabor is making great strides to help improve his team, he has also spent the offseason bettering himself with camps, workouts, and training.

“This year I want to be more of a vocal leader,” Tabor said. “In years past, I’ve tried to always lead by example. This year we will have guys stepping into key roles that do not have varsity experience and will need more direction. I know I have experience to share and I want to help make my team better each and every day.”

“I am feeling pretty good about the season,” Tabor said. “We don’t have a ton of guys returning to varsity, but I think there will be players who are going to step up in a big way.”

Jordan Hartman

“I’ve been training with Sharpe Performance and of course my team pretty much all off season,” Hartman said. “One of my weaknesses that I wanted to improve was covering the pass game and getting better at one on ones. My teammates Christian Snipes and Nik Pai have pushed me to improve on that aspect.”

“Of course one of my goals is to win,” Hartman said. “That’s everyone’s goal. But for it being my last year playing at Andover I just wanna go out there and enjoy the game. I want to have as much fun as I can and enjoy every second of it.”

“I’m excited and ready for the season to arrive,” Hartman said. “I know I’m a lot better than I was last year and I want to see what I’m capable of doing on the Hartmanfield.”spent most of the offseason training with the best and disciplining himself to advance his skill.

“This summer I’ve been working on strength training as well as camp and team workouts. Last season was my first time playing cornerback, so this year I want to improve my instincts in that position.”

With his final season of high school football quickly approaching, Hartman hopes to cherish his final moments under the lights with his teammates.

Not decided on where, Hartman wishes to play football in college.

Tabor hopes to play baseball in college, but is still uncertain on his major. Jordan Hartman of Andover is looking forward to getting back on the field this season, and ready to show what he can do. Hartman was a first team all-league right guard last season.

“We have very high expectations for the upcoming 2022 football season,” Canton-Galva coach Shelby Hoppes said. “This year’s team has a large and very experienced senior class that has been part of deep playoff runs in each of their first three years. They understand what it’s going to take and how hard the grind is.”

With so many players back from that team, expectations are high for Canton-Galva again in 2022.

BROUGHT

“We set three team goals every year and number one on all the guy’s list this year was making it back to Newton,” Hoppes said. “After coming up short the last couple years, they are hungry to make that run back to Newton and have a chance to play for a state title.”

Offensively, the Eagles are going to be able to score at will on any opponent. They return quarterback Garrett Maltbie, who was an all-state selection, Cason Mastre, who was an all-district wide receiver and T.J. Koehn, who started at tight end. Canton-Galva also have Wheatland-Grinnell wide receiver transfer Jett Vincent.

“It has been fun to watch over the summer,” Hoppes said. This senior class won state as freshmen and Hoppes said they have been talking about adding a final chapter to their careers this season.

Lakeside returns with a new offensive line after graduating six seniors. The Knights do bring back running back Cooper Duskie, center Eli Hahn, and running back Ian Kresin. Kresin had 97 carries and over 600 yards his sophomore year. Only graduating four seniors, Stafford returns a lot of varsity experience. From the 5-4 team the Trojans bring back quarterback Dylan Gantz and wide receiver Josh Hildebrand. Three more seniors and three juniors also take the field with Gantz and Hildebrand.

Thunder Ridge brings back seven starters from the 11-1 team. The Longhorns are another senior heavy team with quarterback Dylan Bice, running back Dalton Bice, and tight end Kaleb Wagenblast returning on offense. Seniors Jace Randall and Brian Shaw will lead on defense.

Beloit-St. John’s went 4-5 in the 2021 season, and are looking to improve that record this year. The Blujays bring back four year defensive starter Cooper Jermark and six others to lead the defense. Hanover has four returning starters this season, including seniors Tregan Graff and Josh Zarybnicky. Trying to recover from injuries from last season, the Wildcats are looking to come out full force.

Losing six seniors is going to be tough. bring back some upperclassmen with varsity experience, but will need multiple guys in multiple positions to step up next year that have little to no varsity experience. should still maintain speed and quickness on both sides of the ball but will have to convert to a more methodical offensive outlook.”

COACH FREEMAN SAYS: “We bring back some good experience from the year before and we have some added size and speed to our team. Our biggest weakness is numbers. The last few years have been a challenge because we have not had the chance to go eight on eight. As most teams are this time of year, we are excited about the upcoming season and the experience we bring back at some key positions. Fries has been using the offseason as a learning period, making sure he knows all the ways to help his team succeed.

“The event went really great for us,” Tuggle said. “We had some awesome teams come out and had some highly competitive games. Food trucks kept the audience fed, as well as our talented teams keep the crowd in awe.”

“I want to have a fun and successful season,” Young said. “Beat as many teams as we can.”

“I just keep working hard,” Schroeder said. “I am a member of the leadership committee and I really take notes of discussion and lessons from coaches that shares with us.”

“I always give 110 percent on and off the field,” Schroeder said. “I try to encourage everyone to do the same. I want our team to succeed, not just me as an individual player.”

Luke Schroeder of McPherson was voted the Salina Area Preseason Special Teams Player of the Year. Schroeder was a first team allleague special teams player last season.

Little River’s Braden Young had an exceptional junior season with six picks and was named a first team all-state athlete. Young is looking forward to showing what he and his team can accomplish this season.

WICHITA FLAG FOOTBALL ASSOCIATION

“I’ve been working with the team and working on my quickness,” Young said. “I have a field in my hometown that I like getting some work in on. Getting some quicker hips and mobility will help me fly to the ball.”

While undecided where, Young does hope to continue his academic career after high school. “I want to go into business or safety management,” Young said. “College is undecided. I want to have a good family to teach my little ones to play baseball.”

While winning is on everyone’s mind, Young also hopes to have a memorable season with his teammates.

“I feel great and loose,” Young said. “People always say the pressure is on us from the last few seasons, but when we are out on the field and at practice we don’t feel it affects us.”

The winner was YAU WFFA. New commissioner Marcus Tuggle said the event better than they had planned are already looking forward to a bigger and better version next year.

Young is also very involved at Little River. Besides football, Young plays baseball and is the student council president.

Young has been putting in time on and off the field, working towards bettering his skill.

“We are very happy with where our league is going and all the support we have received. We are currently getting prepared for our state tourney, in which we will host this upcoming September with over 25 teams from Wichita, Kansas City, Colorado and a few from the surrounding areas, like Emporia, Derby and Maize.”

Along with being first team all-league on special teams last season, Schroeder was also an honorable mention all-league defensive back, where recorded three interceptions, including one for a touchdown. “I want to work hard like always to exceed expectations set,” Schroeder said. “I want to beat all my numbers from last year. As a team, we want to make it to state. We want to work together as a unit not as individuals.”

Schroeder is also a member of the leadership committee for the Bullpups, which is a position he values.

The Wichita Flag Football Association hosted the All City 7 on 7 Flag Football Tournament at Life Prep Academy on July 10. The tournament, which was presented by Mute Haters, a team competing, had five other squads playing.

SHRINE BOWL

The 2022 Kansas Shrine Bowl ended in a 10-10 tie, which was the first time since 2001 the annual contest ended in a tie.

Dodge City’s Emanuel Aguilar kicked the game-tying field goal with 23 seconds remaining to get the western side to 10 Sedgwick’spoints.Lance

Evan Cantu from Maize South finished with 79 total yards, Cheney’s Harrison Voth connected on one pass for 24 yards and on the receiving end of that pass was Bishop Carroll’s Matt Holthusen.

“I obviously want to play football in college and then after college I would love to get into teaching,” Smith said. “I would also like to get into coaching, I love football and always want to stay around it.”

Ty Smith - Circle High School Student of the Month

Smith hopes to go to college for education, and incorporate football into his life.

“Honestly, this offseason I feel like I have improved on the mental side of the game,” Smith said. “For me it has been nice to work on my game physically but also mentally, it is easy to get caught up in stuff with social media today. This year I am very proud of how I have handled things.” Smith hopes to build off his junior year, and break a personal record with the help of his team. “I had 730 yards in eight games so I’d love to crack 1000 this year,” Smith said. “The more games we play the easier that will be, so good thing I think this team will be playing some November ball.”

While still focusing on physical improvement, Smith feels he has also grown mentally.

Ty Smith of Circle High School was chosen as the Advanced Physical Therapy Athlete of the Month. The first team all-league receiver and defensive back is excited to get on the field and show what the Thunderbirds have been working on this offseason.

Dropping down to the 6 Man ranks will be good look to have a solid amount of experience returning in 2022. All of Juniors coming back had seen some big varsity minutes in the 2021 Season. We will look for that experience to lead the way for us in the 2022 Season. We will likely be small in numbers once again, so we need to focus on conditioning, as guys will likely be playing all three sides of the ball week in and week out. We need to be physical, fast, and very good in the open field. Learning to play each down for each other will once again be key to our team’s success this season.”

Cunningham has gone 16-3 over the past two seasons, and more favoritism is to come their way this season. The Wildcats bring back five two-way players including Trey DeWeese, who had over 700 yards and 19 touchdowns his junior year. With only one senior playing this year, Centre is counting on the underclassmen to prove themselves. Three juniors return on offense, including Nick Krch and Gentri Holub as offensive ends, and Santiago Knepp as a running back. With a young team, the Cougars will be one to watch over the next few years. Moving down to the 6-man classification will be the biggest change for Peabody-Burns. The Warriors return tight end Jefferson Glover, running back Colton Gossen, and tight end Kael Hutchison. Peabody-Burns has solid experience returning, and will be a team to follow this season.

“The Osborne game from last season will always be a good memory, being down early in the game and sticking together as a team to come back,” Struckhoff said. “We’ve had several close games with them over the past few years and it felt good to finally come away with a victory.”

Joel Struckhoff, the head football coach at Thunder Ridge, was chosen as the Salina Regional Coach of the Month for August. Struckhoff led the Longhorns to the 8-Man Division II sub-state round last season where they fell to the eventual champion, Axtell. Struckhoff said his team’s run throughout the season was full of memorable moments, but one stood out above the rest.

The orthopedic care you need to keep moving forward.

SALINA REGIONAL ORTHOPEDIC CLINIC’S COACH OF THE MONTH

Salina Regional Orthopedic and Sports Medicine is the leader in orthopedic and sports medicine care for north-central Kansas, with the extensive training and experience you need to keep you moving forward.

“A large senior class with several returning starters will anchor a good offense & defense from last season,” Struckhoff said. “We move to the west this year and look to compete for a district title and a deep playoff push again this year.”

For the past four years, Struckhoff has been Thunder Ridge’s head coach, where he has a record of 30-12 and has implemented specific philosophies.

“My coaching philosophy is a run heavy offense that relies on being sound offensively, that doesn’t turn the ball over, a line that is smart, and a physical/power backfield,” Struckhoff said. “On defense we want to be aggressive, blitz often, and put pressure on the opposing teams.”

Valley Center High School senior and member of the varsity boys soccer team, Mason Ernstein, has worked hard this offseason to prepare himself for a potential position switch in his final season of prep soccer.

“My expectations for the upcoming year individually is to get 1,500 or more yards rushing with 15 touchdowns,” McMillan said. “My team’s expectation is to make it to state.”

“I love how we all get along with each other and there is no drama,” said Ernstein.

“I run cross country in the fall as well, I do swim in the winter and I do tennis in the spring,” said Ernstein. But soccer is the focus, and he is hopeful the opportunity to play at the next level will present itself.

“I would like to play soccer in college. If that does not work out however I would like to go to WSU and major in some sort of engineering I am not sure what kind yet though,” said Ernstein. Away from sports, Ernstein said he enjoys hanging out with friends and playing disc golf. Recently Ernstein was a student at the Wichita Driving School and said the experience was a good one.

Kenyon McMillan was chosen as the Salina Chamber Athlete of the month. McMillan has high expectations for his senior year.

Soccer is not the only sport Ernstein participates in at Valley Center. He is a four-sport athlete, which means he never takes a break from athletics throughout the school year.

An important play against Campus last season changed McMillan’s look on the game, and is one he will always remember.

“One thing I took away from last season was getting a 70 yard touchdown in the first game against Campus,” McMillan said. “This motivates me because it shows me that I can always do more and more.” McMillan hopes to continue playing football in the future while also keeping busy with academics.

“After high school I want to play football at the next level and get a degree in business,” McMillan said. “VISIT

“My experience with Wichita Driving School was very good. Their lessons were easy to understand, and the driving teachers were very nice,” said Ernstein. “The thing I enjoyed the most about it was the driving experience with their teachers.”

“I best utilize my strengths for my team by making big plays happen to get the team going and fired up,” McMillan said. “I have been gaining weight by working out all summer to help improve my size.”

“Last season I played outside back. This season I would like to play defensive midfielder though,” said Ernstein. Ernstein said playing with this group of guys has been special.
