Listen to Hannah Gadsby tell her own story, from growing up as a queer person in Tasmania to her ever-evolving relationship with comedy, late diagnoses of autism and ADHD, and finally to the creation of Nanette.
Dear Librarian,
With such a great range of new titles on offer this next quarter I find it’s always one of my hardest jobs to select which ones to highlight. Son of Sin, by Omar Sakr (April) is certainly one of the most talked about novels right now enjoying a ridiculous amount of media coverage and there are whisperings of it being a strong contender to win the Miles Franklin Literary Award this year. Another title that is sure to be a media magnet and in great demand is The Uncaged Sky, by Kylie Moore-Gilbert ( June) – the extraordinary story of the author’s 804 days in an Iranian prison after being wrongly accused of espionage. Enduring extreme physical and psychological duress, Kylie Moore-Gilbert found the will to survive smuggling messages to the media, communicating in secret with fellow prisoners, going on hunger strikes, attempting an escape and was only released after a highstakes prisoner swap organized by the Australian government. Narrated by the author, it is simply a must-listen. Then we have one of the most anticipated titles of the year, Ten Steps to Nanette, by Hannah Gadbsy (May). Ever since her Netflix special Nanette went viral she skyrocketed to global stardom and we couldn’t be more excited to be publishing her memoir in audio, narrated by Hannah herself. A must-have addition to your library collection should be the latest release in the popular “Growing Up in Australia” series Growing Up in Country Australia, edited by Rick Morton (April) and I must flag The Birth Book, by Professor Stephen Tong which is (surprisingly) the only Australian book covering all aspects of, and focusing solely on, birth (not pregnancy) to give expectant mothers a fully-comprehensive guide to one of the most important days in their lives. Audio lovers gravitate towards crime so don’t miss the fabulous debut crime novels Daughters of Eve, by Nina D. Campbell, a revenge-thriller perfectly placed in this #Metoo era and the chilling Black River, by Matthew Spencer with a unique private school setting. And last, but not least, I would like to recommend So Many Beats of My Heart, by Carrie Cox. Featuring a marriage counselor navigating her own marriage breakdown, it is both heart-warming and entertaining, with elements of your average romcom, but far more layered. It is also poignant and moving and I fell in love with it. Enjoy browsing the rest of our catalogue!

Son of Sin Omar Sakr An estranged father. An abused and abusive mother. An army of relatives. A tapestry of violence, woven across generations and geographies, from Turkey to Lebanon to Western Sydney. This is the legacy left to Jamal Smith, a young queer Muslim trying to escape a past in which memory and rumour trace ugly shapes in the dark. When every thread in life constricts instead of connects, how do you find a way to breathe? Torn between faith and fear, gossip and gospel, family and friendship, Jamal must find and test the limits of love. In this extraordinary work, Omar Sakr deftly weaves a multifaceted tale brimming with angels and djinn, racist kangaroos and adoring bats, examining with a poet’s eye the destructive impetus of repressed desire and the complexities that make us human.

Ten Steps to Nanette Hannah Gadsby The memoir from Australia’s much-loved comedian, Hannah Gadsby, whose stand-up show and selfdescribed swan-song, Nanette, played to sold-out houses in Australia, the UK and the US. Its launch on Netflix, and subsequent Emmy and Peabody wins, took Nanette (and Hannah) to the world. Multi-awardwinning Hannah Gadsby transformed comedy with her show Nanette, even as she declared that she was quitting stand-up. Now, she takes us through the defining moments in her life that led to the creation of Nanette and her powerful decision to tell the truth — no matter the cost. Ten Steps to Nanette traces Gadsby’s growth as a queer person from Tasmania-where homosexuality was illegal until 1997 – to her ever-evolving relationship with comedy, to her struggle with adult diagnoses of autism and ADHD, and finally to the backbone of Nanette – the renouncement of self-deprecation, the rejection of misogyny, and the moral significance of truth-telling.

The Uncaged Sky Kylie Moore-Gilbert On September 12, 2018 British-Australian academic Kylie Moore-Gilbert was arrested at Tehran Airport by Iran’s feared Islamic Revolutionary Guards. Convicted of espionage in a shadowy trial presided over by Iran’s most notorious judge, Dr Moore-Gilbert was sentenced to ten years in prison. Incarcerated in Tehran’s Evin and Qarchak prisons for 804 days, this is the full and gripping account of her harrowing ordeal. Held in a filthy solitary confinement cell for months, and subjected to relentless interrogation, Kylie was pushed to the limits of her endurance by extreme physical and psychological deprivation. On November 25, 2020, after more than two years of struggle, Kylie was finally released in a high stakes three-nation prisoner swap deal orchestrated by the Australian government, laying bare the complex game of global politics in which she had become a valuable pawn.
Written with extraordinary insight and vivid immediacy, The Uncaged Sky is Kylie Moore-Gilbert’s remarkable story of courage and resilience, and a powerful meditation on hope, solidarity and what it means to be free.

The Forest of Stars
As lead singer of Happy Mondays and Black Grape, Shaun Ryder was the Keith Richards and Mick Jagger of his generation. A true rebel, who formed and led not one but two seminal bands, he’s had number-one albums, headlined Glastonbury, toured the world numerous times, taken every drug under the sun, been through rehab – and come out the other side as a national treasure. Now, for the first time, Shaun lifts the lid on the real inside story of how to be a rock star. From recording your first demo tape to having a number-one album, Shaun gives a fly-on-the-wall look at the rock ‘n’ roll lifestyle – warts and all: how to be a rock star – and also how not to be a rock star. In this audiobook he pulls the curtain back on the debauchery of the tour bus, ridiculous riders, run-ins with record companies, drug dealers and the mafia, and how he forged the most remarkable comeback of all time.

Glittering a Turd
Read by the Author
Kris Hallenga Kris was living a totally normal life as a twenty-three-yearold: travelling the world, falling in love, making plans. However, when she found a lump in her boob and was told that it was not only cancer, but also incurable, life took on a completely new meaning. She was diagnosed at an age when life wasn’t something to be grateful for, but a goddamn right. Little did Kris know it was cancer that would lead her to a life she had never considered: a happy one. From founding a charity to visiting Downing Street, campaigning at festivals to appearing on TV, and being present at the birth of her nephew; in the face of all the possible prognoses, Kris is surviving, thriving, and resolutely living. Glittering a Turd is more than just another cancer memoir; it’s a handbook for living life to the fullest, shining a new perspective on survival and learning to glitter your own turd, whatever it might be. Kris has survived the unsurvivable for twelve years. Here, she begins to discover why. “This honest and beautiful book is a story of resilience and doing life your way.” FEARNE COTTON “With some extraordinary writing and brutal honesty, Kris’ story never lingers on tragedy. Instead, we are offered humour, motivation and hope. It is a manifesto for how to be alive. It will leave you calm, hopeful and unafraid. A bold reminder to live your life your way. You’ll be endlessly inspired by her perspective.”

The Queen Matthew Dennison For millions of people, both in Britain and across the world, Elizabeth II is the embodiment of monarchy. Her long life spans nearly a century of national and global history, from a time before the Great Depression to the era of Covid-19. Her reign embraces all but seven years of Britain’s postwar history; she has been served by fifteen UK prime ministers from Churchill to Johnson, and witnessed the administrations of fourteen US presidents from Truman to Biden. The vast majority of Britons cannot remember a world without Elizabeth II as head of state and the Commonwealth. In this brand- new biography of the longest-reigning sovereign in British history, Matthew Dennison traces her life and reign across an era of unprecedented and often seismic social change. Stylish in its writing and nuanced in its judgements, The Queen charts the joys and triumphs as well as the disappointments and vicissitudes of a remarkable royal life; it also assesses the achievement of a woman regarded as the champion of a handful of ‘British’ values endorsed – if no longer practised – by the bulk of the nation: service, duty, steadfastness, charity and stoicism.
An elegant and magisterial new biography of Her Majesty The Queen, tracing the events of a reign that now spans seven decades, and evaluating her achievement as a practitioner of monarchy across the entirety of her reign.

Andrew Motion’s beautifully written memoir of growing up in post-war England is an unforgettable evocation of family life, school life and country life. By turns funny and elegiac, a wonderful picture of a vanishing England.

Boy on Fire Mark Mordue A brilliant and soulful biography of one of today’s most acclaimed singersongwriters, Nick Cave. An intensely beautiful, profound and poetic biography of the formative years of the dark prince of rock ‘n’ roll, Boy on Fire is Nick Cave’s creation story, a portrait of the artist first as a boy, then as a young man. A deeply insightful work which charts his family, friends, influences, milieu and, most of all, his music, it reveals how Nick Cave shaped himself into the extraordinary artist he would become.
“A fascinating read, both as an occult history of Australian punk and a kind of rake’s progress.” GUARDIAN “Engrossing... forensically researched... a writer with his own stylistic flourishes who intimately understands the milieu he is writing about.” OBSERVER “There is plenty of humour in Boy on Fire... and beautiful moments, as well as delinquency and sadness.” BUZZ MAGAZINE

Places I’ve Taken My Body Molly McCully Brown In seventeen intimate essays, poet Molly McCully Brown explores living within and beyond the limits of a body – in her case, one shaped since birth by cerebral palsy, a permanent and often painful movement disorder. Throughout, Brown offers us the gift of her exquisite sentences, woven together in consideration, always, of what it means to be human – flawed, potent, feeling.
“These remarkable essays invite us to look long and hard at our own interior landscapes, and to negotiate exterior ones with as much grace and gratitude as we can muster.”

Lemon Kwon Yeo-sun This is not a murder story. It is the story of those left behind. Parasite meets The Good Son in this piercing psychological portrait of three women haunted by a brutal, unsolved crime. Lemon ostensibly takes the shape of a crime novel, but identifying the perpetrator is not the main objective here: Kwon Yeo-sun uses this well-worn form to craft a searing, timely exploration of privilege, jealousy, trauma, and how we live with the wrongs we have endured and inflicted in turn.
“Discovering whodunnit isn’t really the point here; Lemon is a subtle, often intense meditation on the after-effects of violence.”

Roundabout of Death Faysal Khartash A powerful and beautiful Syrian novel set in Aleppo during the early days of the civil war that followed the Arab Spring. Jumaa is a schoolteacher in Aleppo. Roundabout of Death offers powerful witness to the violence that obliterated the ancient city’s rich layers of history. Aleppo was home to Arabs, Armenians, Kurds, Christians and other sects. The war tore those communities apart and made their city a wasteland. SOP

Four old friends. Thrown back together after forty years apart. What could possibly go wrong? In the 1970s, The Girls were best friends sharing a house and good times. Now they’re in their twilight years, and Zara suggests that they live with her to support each other through old age.
Everyone deserves a second chance. Don’t they? Kat is rebuilding her life. After losing her husband in a tragic accident, moving to the countryside is her chance to start again. Encouraged by her new and only friend Ginny, Kat joins New Horizons, dubbed the Coffin Club by its members. And that’s how she meets Nico.
Baggage chronicles Alan Cumming’s life in Hollywood and the ways in which work has repeatedly whisked him away from personal calamities to sets and stages around the world. Startlingly honest, both poignant and joyous, Baggage shines a light on how to embrace the complicated messiness of life.

Run down by three trucks, leg in plaster, not a good first day... So begins septuagenarian Simon Gandolfi’s ten-month ride on a pizza delivery bike, from the tip of South America to New York. Outrageously irresponsible and undeniably liberating, Gandolfi’s travels will fire the imaginations of every traveller, young or old.
A surprising new history of Tutankhamun published to coincide with the centenary of his tomb’s discovery. Here, for the first time, Christina Riggs weaves compelling historical analysis with tales of lives touched by an encounter with Tutankhamun, including her own.
What does it mean to be an explorer in the twenty-first century? Explorer is the story of what first led Benedict Allen to head for the farthest reaches of our planet – at a time when there were still valleys and ranges known only to the communities who inhabited them – and why, thirty years later, he is still exploring.
Fizzing with energy, hilarity and charm, this is the Sunday Times bestseller from Countryfile’s Anita Rani. This story of a second-generation British Indian woman up north is also a tale of tenacity and a life lived with positivity and humour. If you have ever felt alone or different, this is the book for you.

Manhunt: The Night Stalker
A Thing of Beauty
The Boy: Stirling Moss: A Life in 60 Laps
The Year the World Went Mad
Colin Sutton
Peter Fiennes
Richard Williams
Mark Woolhouse
Now a major ITV drama starring Martin Clunes, Manhunt: The Night Stalker is the chilling true story of one of the most testing manhunts the Metropolitan Police have ever undertaken. It is a glimpse into the mind and work of the brilliant detective who brought one of London’s most feared monsters to justice.
What do the Greek myths mean to us today? Peter Fiennes travels to the sites of some of the most famous, on the trail of hope, beauty and a new way of seeing what we have done to our world. Fiennes walks through landscapes and loses himself in the cities, remote villages and ruins of this storied land.
Even in the midst of a global pandemic, the death of Stirling Moss on 12 April 2020 at the age of ninety made headlines, almost sixty years after he retired from Formula One. Here Williams assesses what made him such an iconic figure. “Captures the bold, engaging spirit of one of Britain’s best-loved sporting heroes.” SUNDAY TIMES
In this astonishing book Mark Woolhouse recounts the history of the COVID-19 pandemic through the eyes of a scientist at the centre of the action. He explores the failures and successes of the UK’s, and the world’s, response to the virus, and candidly describes the challenges scientists faced when working with politicians.
