Objective: Given a house plan, situate the house on an empty lot and design the ssurrounding rro nding land landscape. Include a pool between 2500 and 3000 square feet. Process: The house plan is placed nearer to the street to allow for more space in the backyard. The garage is rotated 90 degrees so that the garage door does not face the street for aesthetic appeal. Reflecting the house architecture, the pool creates a long line of symmetry across the back of the property to maximize space space. Enter Entertainment can be hosted in the lawn and gazebo area. The pond area contrasts the formality of the rest of the design, providing a loop walk for personal and intimate space. Staying in character with other large home on Milledge Avenue, the front yard is short and bisymmetrical.

Objective: Given a vacant lot in Athens, design a city park for the use of students st dents and residents residents. Process: Using the existing building, and additional building creates a corridor. These two build buildings house a restaurant and a coffee shop, making this a multi-use park. The water feature emulates the cycle of a stream, starting at a water mill, weaving through the corridor, and emptying into a large pool. White noise from the water mill suppresses surrounding street noise. The weaving water creates private seating areas for the restaurant and coffee shop. Large public gatherings can use the space around the pond, or platforms can be used for events on the stage. The model is constructed with thin board and green sponge. The water is dried craft glue which gives it a glossy surface and a translucent hue.

Objective: Design an infill housing plan for an empty block in an e isting neighborhood existing neighborhood. Include at least 12 houses. Process: The houses face inward to the cul-de-sacs cul de sacs to maximize back backyard space. Each cul-de-sac is meant to serve as a shared driveway with rumble strips as sidewalks. Semi-private paths lead from each house to one of two common areas. The two common areas contrast each other from a hard patio and pavilion area to a soft green space with a pond. The shared common areas and paths should help build a good sense of community. House footprints were generated by houseplanguys.com.

Objective: Create a planting plan for a backyard garden with prod ctive or edible plants productive plants. Provide an area for mulching and avoid the existing gas line. Process: I wanted to create a modern garden that pulled inspiration from colonial gardens. The green house sits on axis with the window of the new addition, but the arcs break up the space into dynamic bands of texture and color when viewed through the window of the new addition. Each bed has a corresponding tree or shrub to compliment the ground layer. A pergola and arbors are added to provide structures for fruit bearing vines.

Composite Analysis of Inventory
Objective: Design a conservation subdivision. Maximize the number of lots regardless of limitlimit ations, then reduce lot size while keeping the same number of lots within the suitable areas. Roads are to be engineered to construction stand standards. Process: Most of the lots are arranged to that the common greenspace becomes a communal front yard. Several nature trails are drawn in loops and the pavilions are placed where trees do not have to be cleared To encourage drivers cleared. to slow down, the roads constantly curve. Furthermore, the roads prevent drivers from cutting through the neighborhood by having Liverwort Lane come to a stop into Hornwort Circle. Cul-de-sacs are avoided to prevent isolation and better a sense of community. The two entrances are aligned with existing roads.

Objective: Design a mixed-use development on a brownfield site Incorporate a train site. station for a possible commuter rail and bus transfer. Residential lots have a 5,000 S.F. minimum, include one anchor commercial store.
Concept Layout
Th Leeuwenhoek The L h k Mixed-Use Brownfield Redevelopment
Process: I wanted the commercial anchor to be the center focus, located near the center and on a high point. From there the central public greenspace becomes the store front landscape rather than a large asphalt parking lot. The main road curves to create a revealreveal ing effect to the anchor store and to slow traffic. Where the road splits, it creates small spaces for the store entrances. The angles of the roads app approaching the train station allow views through the street corridor. The townhomes have garages in the rear so that the streetscape is lines with houses, not garages. Entrances to the site align with existing roads.

Objective: Given an abandoned lot, design a park and farmer’s market for downtown Athens, Athens GA. Include indoor and outdoor dining areas, demonstration beds, 6 market stalls, and a stage for music or art displays. Process: Market 54 is meant to provide an opportunity for people to connect to locally grown food who normally would not. To avoid imposing retaining walls at the entrance, the grading meets evenly with the surrounding slope. The four demonstrations beds contain fruits and vegetables that can be easily grown in the Athens climate. At the top of the walkway is the market plaza where 6 booths are set up for demonstrations, vendors or for local growers to sell there produce. The orientation of the stage is meant mostly for listening rather than watching, so the sound can be heard from any point in the park.

Objective: Choose a site anywhere in the world that is near a large body of water and design a resort hotel swimming pool appropriate for the region. Process: I chose Istanbul, Turkey, as my location because I wanted to explore Islamic design and Istanbul is one of the richest cultural cities of the region. The design is a cloister similar to Islamic temples found across the world. Each feature is an adapted form from a temple, from the covered hot tubs with channels running from them to the paradise garden and fountain of youth area. Paving patterns are sampled from actual Islamic paving patterns found in temples.

Objective: Redesign one block of Hancock Avenue to create a better pedestrian environment. environment Work with existing buildings and add new buildings if desired. Process: I wanted to create distinct travel lanes for pedestrians and vehicles, but I did not want to separate them entirely, so the street and sidewalk are on the same ground plane. Distinction between lanes is achieved through the placing of trees and light poles. The fronts of each building would have a raised patio with which plantings or restaurant seating could be placed. Spanning the entire length of the street, the steps serve as unlimited public seating space. Near the center of the block is the Chamber of Commerce, which had no emphasis in the surrounding landscape. The plaza helps to celebrate this town landmark and provide a public gathering space.

Process: The lawn space has been significantly reduced. Nearly all plants are native and are well adapted to Georgia clay and summer heat. To create dynamic spaces, each wall is curved which also increases its strength. On the east side of the house is a wildflower bed to create a meadow-like open space, which unlike a lawn, does not require mowing. A pergola was proposed on the east side of the house to provide covered seating with a view of the wildflower bed. Several patios are located throughout the design to provide many seating options.

Objective: Design a dream home for a classmate. My classmate wanted an arts and crafts home with traditional amenities.

Process: The home layout is rectilinear and keeps a regular shape. The entrance hall creates a humbling effect as it spans 2 floors. I created a large space between the living room, dining room and kitchen, but distinguished the spaces without separating them. The master bath room has a walk through shower and a raised spillover tub tub. Upstairs is a play room that is open to the hall. The two smaller bedrooms share a jack-and-jill style bathroom. Downstairs are other amenities such as a home theater, bar and work out room.

Process: I wanted to explore modern forms, so I limited my forms to straight lines and curves. The resulting floor plan seemed appropriate to be a penthouse on top of a high rise building. I arranged the layout so that the office over looks the living room giving the living room 2 ½ floors of height. On the other side, the master bedroom has a personal balcony overlooking the rooftop pool. The roof has 2 contrasting parts that add a dynamic flare to the top of the building. The overall building shape is meant to be a sharp contrast to other buildings one would see in an urban environment, with the vertical profiles curving convexly. The building should fit nicely in one city block.

Process: The design studio and retail store are located near the front entrance for easy access. Behind these buildings are trial gardens to demonstrate the type of design I am capable of. These gardens are themed to each of the senses and have different features that support these senses including outdoor rooms and a waterfall. The residence is tucked away in the middle of the property for privacy and is located on a high point. From here, the residence can be seen from across the proposed irrigation pond and can have a pleasant view from the large viewing windows. The remaining prime farmland would be used to start a nursery with 16 different native shrubs. This collection fits within the local market and promotes native wildlife.
