MY HELL’S KITCHEN

Know someone cool who’d make a great subject for My Hell’s Kitchen? Put us in touch, we’ll do the rest. Email news@w42st.com

Happy After 9/11, Nicki and Luisa were looking for somewhere with heart. They found it in Hell’s Kitchen Photograph Phil O’Brien Our HK story After 9/11 we had an epiphany, like many New Yorkers, and decided we wanted to work together in a business with more heart. People were going out less, nesting more, and entertaining friends and family at home. We decided to open a store that catered to those feathering-the-nest needs. We never looked anywhere other than Hell’s Kitchen. We always liked this neighborhood because it’s like a village within the city. The sense of community is very strong and we would see people greet each other in the street all the time (and that hasn’t changed). We opened the store on November 29, 2002, the day after Thanksgiving, so this year is our sweet 16! Our mission from the beginning was to bring items sustainably made with love and pride by artists and artisans, and pay them properly for their work. The community immediately embraced us and what we stand for, not just by purchasing our goods, but by showing kindness in so many ways, like bringing us home-made food on long-working days, or sharing an article we may be interested in, or giving us theater tickets. There are so many people in the arts in HK and they really appreciate that most of our items are not mass produced. You won’t see us next month We close the store each January and travel to a different country to source products and work with artisans all over the world. We feel a responsibility to keep crafts alive that otherwise would be lost to

mechanization. Our favorite destinations are in Southeast Asia, and we have gone to remote villages on the mountains where ethnic minorities cultivate hemp, weave it, dye it with indigo, and embroider it. They create garments and accessories of stunning beauty. We have pillows made by Black Hmong tribes that could grace a contemporary NYC apartment, yet the makers have never left their hamlet on remote mountains. But we bring a piece of New York with us Because so many of these tribes are isolated, many are unaware of modern technology, so we bring a portable printer and set up photo booths, where we take photographs of local villagers, print them, and hand them out. The results are at first disbelief that such thing is possible, then the joyous smiles come out as everyone scrambles to put on their best clothes and jewelry and they go and grab children and husbands to have their photo taken. One of the most touching stories was from an elderly lady who invited us for tea with her daughters and told us she could die in peace knowing that her daughters would have a picture to remember her by. The best thing about HK? There is still a strong community of people in the arts, but the high rents have pushed a lot out, and the new high-rises are filling with people less vested

in the neighborhood. Our wish is for the newcomers to cherish the human contact HK offers, from the chat with the Yemenite at the deli counter, to the interaction with the Korean dry cleaner, or the sparring with the Italian store owner. There is so much we can all learn from the wonderful melting pot that is this city and this neighborhood. Our tribe We are so rich in friends here – we seem to gravitate towards people in the arts and people that have traveled, people with many interests and a curiosity. They have enriched the fabric of our life. When we’re not at the store … We love the food at The Marshal, especially on cooler nights, and really appreciate their locavore philosophy. For a glass of wine, we are very lucky to have Wine Escape right here on W44th St, since it’s the only wine bar we know where the music is mellow enough to actually have a conversation with friends. We love bread and have two of the best bakeries in NYC right here, but because I’m Italian, we gravitate towards Sullivan St Bakery – they have some of the best Italian bread in or out of Italy. For good pizza (a life’s necessity) we like B-Side, Nizza, and, for a big-splurge occasion, we love Taboon.

Holiday survival GIFT GUIDE

Family gatherings can be stressful. Thankfully, Vicky Kuperman has been to Walgreens … Pop quiz! As the holidays approach, do you want to: 1. Play dead? 2. Hibernate like a bear? 3. Go live in a treehouse in Thailand? 4. All of the above? If any of these answers resonate, you might be suffering from a very common condition called MyFamilyStressesMeOut-itis. Unfortunately, it’s not curable, as doctors can’t treat the causes of the disease (your family, your childhoods). But, lucky for you, I can provide some tips and recommend some supplies to help you manage the symptoms.

1 2

Xanax. Self-explanatory.

A pill cutter. You can get one for cheap at your local Walgreens or CVS. Cut a few Xanax in half. Take one half the morning of your holiday get-together (Kwanza, Hanukkah, Christmas) then take the other half about 20-25 minutes before guests arrive (or you arrive at their place to be greeted by a lot of insults and criticism about “always being late” and being “a

A vape pen, a joint, an edible, or a pot lollipop are the perfect topping to an intense Q&A session from your cousin’s husband about how much money you make, why you don’t have more mutual funds, and why you don’t own your apartment.

Did you know that a turkey baster is not just for Thanksgiving or guerilla-style artificial insemination? It is also a great way to drip some moonshine into your mouth while nobody’s looking and they think you’re tending to the bird.

4

Moonshine (see above) or something just as strong and illegal. Regular ol’ whiskey from the store just won’t do the trick when it comes to families and holidays.

5

A pill crusher. If you don’t have one, a garlic press from your pantry will be fine. Crush the remaining two

A year of #tbt

Highlights? We’ve had a few – Phil O’Brien looks back at 2018 with a smile

I

have to admit I’m addicted to Instagram. I proudly deleted the Facebook app from my phone in January … and promptly switched my social media sugar hit to Instagram. I justify it by the fact that I was once a professional photographer – and that I run the W42ST Instagram account – but it’s still an addiction! However, while the magazine is an amazing monthly reflection of life in Hell’s Kitchen, Instagram gives a daily window on our wild west side world. Browsing through the pictures, the first thing that springs to mind is how much the weather plays on our minds, our psyche. It’s a British trait that we always talk about the weather. I don’t know what’s happened, but this year that seems to have transferred to New York conversation. Maybe it’s just a way to avoid getting into a political discussion! It was a year that started with a Bomb Cyclone, and was punctuated by an intermittent summer. I won’t share any pictures of my humidity sweat patch, but it was particularly gross in 2018. One of the delights of the Instagram feed is sharing the pictures of @GaryHershorn. He’s there from super blue blood moons to sunset, from

lightning storms to dawn, and his views of Hell’s Kitchen taken from across the Hudson in New Jersey are just stunning reminders that we live in the greatest city in the world. On the streets, the pouring rain (and brutal winds) give a great opportunity for @maura_patricia_lynch to bring us pictures of broken umbrellas (it’s quite an art). Our skyline continues to transform at a pace that only NYC can keep up with. Hudson Yards is making its mark on the neighborhood, and I look at the 100thfloor viewing platform on 30 Hudson Yards wondering if my poor head for heights will cope with going up there. But I can’t wait to explore the staircases of the The Vessel. Amazing growth, constant change – that’s why we live in New York City. The grass doesn’t grow under our feet (well, that might just be the concrete jungle). Even with all the glass and steel, the humans are still the most important part of the city. The people have a heart and a warm smile (if you catch them at the right moment). The west side, especially, has a welcome for newcomers – and always has. It’s a place of immigrants and newbies, and we’re an example to

PEOPLE the whole of the United States on what it means to be open hearted. I’ve enjoyed some spirited competition in 2018 (aside from representing Great Britain in the World Shuffleboard Championship … another story!). The Pocket Bar v Kiabacca rivalry on the bowling lanes was monumental. The Pounders and the Bowl Dogs fought bravely. I can’t remember who won (note from ed: IT WAS THE BOWL DOGS!) but I can remember how many Hell’s Kitchen friendships were made from the generosity of local business owners Pat Hughes and Suzy Darling. Looking through the instagram feed, particular highlights were pictures of business owners meeting up, from Charlie Marshall (The Marshal) and Erol Zeren (Kahve) to Abel Castro (Ñaño Ecuadorian) and Huascar Aquino (Huascar & Co Bake Shop). These heroes work so hard with high rents and slews of regulations and red tape to bring their hospitality to us. Thank you. Another highlight of my year was our deepening partnership with the team at Intrepid Museum. We all know how hard it is to turn a huge boat (and they don’t get much bigger), but W42ST and Intrepid work so well together to create some innovative magic. The first year of WestsideEATS was a huge undertaking. We were delighted to be joined at the food festival by 25 local business, sponsors like Wells Fargo and T-Mobile, and, most of all, so many readers. Watch out in 2019

– we’ll be planning something special around Fleet Week (and we can’t wait to celebrate 50 years of Pride). This year, the W42ST team has been fortunate to find a new home at The Artist Co-op on W52nd St. I’ve discovered a fitness regime with Michael Tosto and Title Boxing. And one addition to my bar repertoire has been tasting old fashioneds, thanks to John Bolton and Wes Hart from Anastasia who wrote a superb review for the magazine, as well as taking Ruth and I out on the town for some further “coaching” on the art. I’m still pounding the streets with my Radio Flyer – and we’re grateful to the over 1,000 businesses and residences that find a place to proudly display W42ST magazine for our readers. Four years on – and nearing our 50th issue – readers, distributors, advertisers, contributors are a tight-knit tribe. Thank you. And we couldn’t do a review of 2018 without talking politics. I’m delighted that we’ve managed to elect a first-class leader in Corey Johnson, an inspiring politician. I only wish a man like him could be leading us on a national level – and I hope some day he will be. I’ve been fortunate in my life to be in the presence of some amazing human beings – Princess Diana, Mother Theresa, Nelson Mandela. Corey undoubtedly will be in that group – he gives me hope for this country and the world. Finally, some words about 2019. Everything W42ST does will continue to be open, welcoming, and local. We want to help you live your best life, and we want to work with you, our tribe, in partnership to do that. We’ll continue to produce this world-class magazine, reach you in your inbox, and you’ll start to see us putting on some smaller, curated events next year. Remember, we’re a super small team here. We’re not the New York Times or Hearst or Conde Nast – we need your help and support to make this work. Have a very Happy New Year.

How the west was won The gangs that once ruled the streets of Hell’s Kitchen have lost their power … but not the power to shock Interview Ruth Walker Photographs Steve Hill

A

s the pace of Hell’s Kitchen’s gentrification intensifies, it’s increasingly easy to forget that these streets were once fought over by blood-thirsty rival gangs. That shootings were commonplace and bodies were calmly and calculatedly butchered in back rooms. The beginning of the end came when Mickey Featherstone turned himself in and testified against his gangland compatriots in the 1980s. In return, he was given a new identity and is now living under the witness protection scheme. TJ English still hears from him now and then … though not for a while, he says. The author of The Westies, the definitive book on the Irish gangs of the west side, had been working as a cabbie and a part-time reporter for a couple of small publications when he stumbled across the scoop of a lifetime. “As an assignment for the Irish Voice, I was covering the Westies trial in 1988,” recalls the author (his name is actually Thomas Joseph, but the initials have served him well). “Featherstone was testifying against the gang. Even though I was just writing one short article for them, I was down there every day. I got really hooked on the drama of the story which, to me, was like the passing of a generation. Because it wasn’t just the witnesses and the defendants – in the courtroom were a lot of family members, and you could really see the spectacle of this whole way of life that had existed for about a century passing. “One day, at a particularly dramatic point in the trial, I rushed to a party late afternoon at the end of the testimony

“The whole thing blew my mind! Everything about it! Every day was mind blowing! The extreme nature of the violence … it still hasn’t stopped being shocking.”

because a friend was having a book launch. I was telling him about it and his agent was there and said, ‘Boy, this really sounds like a great idea for a book.’ I said, ‘Yeah, I’m sure there are some big writers on it already.’ And she said, ‘Why don’t you check and see what you can find out, if anyone’s doing it? If they’re not, maybe you’d be the person to do it.’ So I called around and nobody was doing it. I went back to the agent and she said, ‘Well, then let’s get a book proposal together.’ “I was 30 years old. I’d never even conceived the idea of writing a book. I remember vividly going home and laying in bed and staring at the ceiling thinking, ‘Now I have to write this book!’” At this stage he didn’t have access to Mickey Featherstone. But he knew he wanted his story to be intimately told. “I felt it was much more than just a broad historical crime story; it was the story of

19

PEOPLE the relationships in a very tough, urban, New York City neighborhood with a long, deeply entrenched criminal history, and what that was like for the people who lived it.” Through a mutual contact, he let Featherstone know he wanted to talk. Then, one day, out of the blue, he got a call. “I was ready,” he says. “I made my pitch.” He didn’t win Featherstone over immediately … that took a long time. Years, in fact. And no money ever changed hands. It seems the violent gangster just wanted his voice to be heard. “The key thing is for them to feel as if they’re not being judged, then you’d be amazed how talkative people can be. Especially when they’ve lived such an extreme, intense life on the edge like that. I think he had a vested interest in wanting his version of the story to be told.” Featherstone would call the author at all times of the day and night, whenever he could get access to a phone. “He felt very isolated. He had become an informant against not just the gang, but against the culture he grew up in, the neighborhood. And some family members had disowned him over it. He had a lot of things he needed to get off his chest. He was very talkative. He just had a lifetime of explaining to do. “And the whole thing blew my mind! Everything about it! Every day was mind blowing. The extreme nature of the violence, the cutting up of the bodies and how that became their modus operandi never stopped being shocking and it still hasn’t stopped being shocking.” Was he repentant? “He felt bad about certain things, yeah. It’s kind of like how you would be if you were so deep into a certain way of life that you weren’t even questioning it. And now you’re brought out of that way of life and you’re looking at it and you’re seeing … yeah, there were a lot of things he was ashamed of.” But there was more than a book deal at stake here. The author was dealing with dangerous men who’d been backed into a corner. It’s safe to say they were capable of anything. “Yeah, well, the way to do a book of this type is to do it as quietly and anonymously as possible,” he says. “In that sense, I was kind of lucky that nobody knew who I was. I didn’t create waves. I don’t think a lot of people knew I was doing this book until it was published. “By that time, they had been arrested,

20

indicted, imprisoned, and ultimately convicted. So the gang had been taken off the street. But there were people who wouldn’t talk to me. A lot of people were afraid to talk.” Twenty-eight years after publication, The Westies is still in print and is now being read by a new generation of fans. And while Hell’s Kitchen has changed dramatically, it’s still loaded with associations for TJ. Mr Biggs, on 10th Ave - 43rd St? That was the 596 Club back in the day, owned by Jimmy Coonan, and it acted as an unofficial Westies HQ. “A number of murders took place there, including the famous murder of Ruby Stein. Bodies were cut up there. One night, they dragged a guy behind the bar and stuck a gun up his rectum and pulled the trigger. And that was just a barroom argument that got out of hand!” The onetime Sunbrite Bar (now The Waylon) on 10th Ave - 50th St – “that was where Eddie Cummiskey got murdered. Eddie is the one who learned to be a butcher in prison and brought that skill to the neighborhood and ushered in that whole era of cutting up the bodies. He’s the one who taught Coonan how to do it. His hangout was the Sunbrite Bar, and that’s the place where a head was allegedly rolled down the bar. I don’t think that ever happened.” But he adds: “You’d hear these outlandish stories and you couldn’t dismiss them because things that did happen that are verifiable were equally outlandish. I mean, Sunbrite Bar is where they had murdered someone and put their genitalia in an empty milk carton and dumped that out on the bar.” Then, of course, there’s the muchmissed Market Diner, which was pulled

down in 2015 to make way for the Oskar apartment building but was, in its day, a popular Westies hangout – a notorious battle took place in its parking lot. “The Market Diner was legendary,” says TJ. “It was one of the last places in this neighborhood that was preserved as it was for a long time. You could sit in that diner and really start to get a feel for the neighborhood because the diner looked the same, the clientele was kind of the same – working people and cops off duty.” Many of the main players have now died, of course, while Featherstone is in his late 60s. The author and his subject stayed in touch long after the publication of the book, though he hasn’t heard from him in a couple years. “There was always the idea of the book being developed as a movie. It’s come close a few times, and the latest they’re talking about is a television series. “People would occasionally come to me and ask if I wanted to do Westies tours. I’d never do that. It would be an insult to people who still live in the neighborhood and had relatives and siblings and friends who were killed during those years.” But the book has never gone away. It has never been out of print, and TJ is constantly approached about it. “It’s passing from generation to generation. I never could have anticipated that, 28 years later, it would still resonate with people. I feel the book has become part of the lore of the neighborhood in a way that none of the other books I’ve published have. And part of that, I do believe, it’s because it’s so much about a neighborhood, a community, and all these issues of loyalty as defined in the streets of New York. Hell’s Kitchen was always a neighborhood where loyalty was a treacherous fault line.” One reviewer took him to task about this sense of nostalgia in the book. They said: “You just wrote a whole book about cutting up bodies and these horrible things and now you’re lamenting the passing of this way of life?” “What I was lamenting,” insists TJ, “was the loss of community. This neighborhood was a really tight community. It was a melting pot neighborhood and people felt a real connection to it – they weren’t just passing through or doing commerce, were really tight. There was a sense that they were under siege from all these forces: social forces, crime forces, everything. And that brought everyone closer together.”

show women The big Apple circus is in town and its women are flying high

stephanie Monseu

Coffee #2. I do 25 minutes of free writing to get words and ideas moving, 20 minutes of deep stretching, answer some emails, and take care of the Cirkus After School program I started in Columbia County, NY, then warm up my voice and do piano scales. A meeting. Lunch. Then I head to the venue to review lines and blocking; warm up; goof around with the crew; and start to get excited. Get into makeup. Then costume. Too excited to eat. Show. Eat something. Sleep. Repeat. Behind the scenes My partner, Keith Nelson, is also a circus and variety artist, and we’ve traveled all over the world together with our own show. We’ve worked with almost 400 artists over the years, so circus has definitely brought us a big family. Even though we’re on different shows this year, we are surrounded by new friends and old. We are very lucky to work with some of the same artists over and over. It’s my favorite life so far.

Ringmaster My path to greatness I broke both wrists while a fine arts student at FIT, so instead of becoming a jewelry designer, I became a fire eater instead. Then a sideshow act. Then a stilt walker. Then a juggler. Then a host and variety act. And on it went! My superpower … Is seeing YOUR superpower! I love supporting other artists and helping to set them off in the frame of the ring. Before the show goes on I wake up 5am or 5.30am for coffee #1.Then I go outdoors to walk and quiet my thoughts. That might also be a four to six-mile run. Breakfast.

estefani evans Trapeze flyer My path to greatness I’m a fifth generation circus performer – both my parents did trapeze in the circus. My mom is Argentinian and my dad is Brazilian. I was born and raised in Brazil, started practicing trapeze at age 10, and performed at age 14. I always wanted to travel the world doing trapeze and at age 18 I was hired for a show in Portugal. Since then, I’ve travelled to Europe, South America, Asia, and USA. My superpower Besides that I can fly?! I’d say that every woman in the circus is a super hero and has a super power. In my case, it’s flying. But, truly, it’s the life behind the curtain/ tent that makes us superwomen.

Before the show goes on We practice two hours a day, several times a week. And we exercise as much as we can outside of practice. Then there’s cleaning, cooking, taking the kids to school, practicing, playing with the kids, help with homework, and rest. Behind the scenes While traveling, I met my husband, Ammed Tuniziani. Our first baby, Davi, is now six and, in 2014, our daughter was born, Alysha, now four. Since I travel with my family and am around so many different people, we have a great social life. We’re exposed to so many different cultures and cities, that it’s very fulfilling.

Virginia tuells hand-to-hand acrobat

My superpower I’m not good at lifting weights, but I can lift my husband!

Before the show goes on My regular training routine includes handstands in multiple positions, using gymnastics equipment, pilates ball, elastic bands, plus a lot of body weight training. And I’ll go for runs, and use elliptical for cardio.

Behind the scenes While I really miss my family in Argentina, I am here because this is my passion. I really love being able to share it with my husband, Ihosvanys Perez, who is also a part of the circus, and our daughter Sofia, who travels with us.

THE JOB I’m the hair supervisor for the six Tony award-winning musical Kinky Boots on Broadway. (Wow! Just seeing that on paper reminds me of how lucky I am!) It is my job to make sure the styles of each wig are maintained exactly to the design. I maintain Lola’s wigs, give Charlie Price his haircuts, and make sure Nicola and Lauren are looking superb. THE RESUME It has been a dream of mine to be a working girl in New York City since I could remember. The first Broadway show I saw was Phantom of the Opera. At only eight years old, watching the chandelier fall, I was awe-inspired. I was 19 and just graduating hairdressing school at Paul Mitchell, when I put out my resume to every community and regional theater I could think of. The first one to email me back was a small children’s theater in my home state in Connecticut. I got the job on the spot. But I never gave up New York. That magical phone call from Jon Jordan asking: “Would you like to train on a track at The Lion King?” was probably the best of my life. I started “hair swinging” all around Broadway, working for nine shows including Matilda and Phantom.

IMAGE: ILONA LIEBERMAN

MY ADVICE? Say yes to every opportunity. The more you’re seen, the more opportunity that’s waiting. WHEN IT’S ALL WORTH IT I was hair supervising my first Broadway play and one of the actresses got sick during the top of the second act. It was a rush to get her understudy ready. In a blink of an eye, the crew rushed the understudy into the quick change booth while the dresser was changing her; the sound man was attaching her mic; I was on a chair whipping her hair into something that looked good; the actress was running her lines. It was truly down to a second, and with all the luck and talent in the world, we were able to connect as a team and flawlessly get her out on stage right in time for her entrance. It was the most exhilarating thing and so worth it.

If there are very young kids you’re likely to end up at a pricey Disney show but if we’re talking teenagers on up through grandparents, it’s more complicated. Company XIV revives its erotic burlesque Nutcracker Rouge (but you’ll have to travel to Brooklyn to see it). Two other options typically sell out fast because space is very limited. The one -man Charles Dickens show A Christmas Carol, performed inside the Merchant’s House Museum, returns for its sixth year. Another expensive but surely memorable option is The Dead, 1904 based on James Joyce’s novella about a holiday gathering in Dublin. In this staging the audience of just 40 is part of the gathering, dining with the actors as they perform.

Cannabidiol is being hailed as cure-everything miracle oil (with a billion-dollar industry to prove it). But is it in all in our heads? Samina Kalloo investigates

W

hile many health trends splashed onto the wellness scene this year, one hotly debated topic we’re guaranteed to hear more about in 2019 is CBD. Also known by its full name, cannabidiol, it is the non-psychoactive part of the cannabis plant, but chances are you’re more familiar with its close cousin, THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) – the most active ingredient in marijuana, the part that gets you high. While they both act on cells in the body called cannabidoid receptors, their effects are vastly different. Unlike THC, CBD will not change a person’s state of mind when they use it. Found in everything from beauty products to infused beverages, packaged foods to dog treats, it is credited with treating a host of medical problems including anxiety, chronic pain, seizures, and inflammation. CBD advocates also tout it as a soothing remedy for sleepless nights and listless mornings. Do a quick Google search and you’ll even find ways to cook with it. OK, let’s start with the research It may seem like CBD is the new “it” supplement, but the powerful antiproperties of the hemp plant have been incorporated into foods and medicines for thousands of years. Anecdotal reports and emerging scientific research now support this and indicate that CBD can help with a laundry list of medical conditions and symptoms such as pain and inflammation, inflammatory bowel disease, irritable bowel syndrome, multiple sclerosis, opioid withdrawal, and anxiety and post-traumatic stress disorder. The National Institutes of Health database lists about 150 studies involving CBD as a potential treatment for these conditions and more. And, according to a study published in the British Journal of Clinical Pharmacology, evidence is emerging to suggest that CBD is a potent inhibitor of both cancer growth and spread. Most recently, some of the research has led to a promising medical treatment for children with epilepsy. In June this year, the FDA approved the prescription use of Epidiolex, a plant-based CBD medication

But not all CBD is created equal It can be derived from two plants, hemp (which contains less than 0.3% psychoactive THC) and cannabis (which can have much more). Hemp-based CBD oil is legal in every state as long as there’s no THC in the product. So do your research beforehand. And know that price and quality vary greatly. Also, don’t confuse hemp oil (which is extracted from the seeds and contains little CBD) with CBD oil (which is typically extracted from the leaves, stem and flowers of the plant). Since CBD is still considered an investigational new drug by the FDA, it can’t be sold as a dietary supplement. That hasn’t stopped business from booming, with a billion-dollar revenue predicted within three years (though, with states like California joining forces with the FDA and prohibiting the use of CBD in food products, that projection may prove premature). Hemp, hemp, hooray… or nay? There is no doubt that we’re in the midst of a CBD craze and, while the benefits sound promising, the FDA and some health care professionals are urging caution. There’s too little research or regulation, they say, so it’s hard to know what you’re really getting. In 2016, the FDA published the amounts of CBD, THC, and other cannabis compounds found in some products, many of which were far lower than the amounts claimed. And it’s important to note that much of the research that has been done has used far higher doses than any product available over the counter. So if you choose to add a CBD booster to your post-workout smoothie or morning latte, for instance, there’s zero evidence that it will have any effect. In fact, some people have reported feeling violently ill after consuming poorly manufactured hempCBD products. If you do decide to give it a try, seek out a physician’s advice before throwing out the painkillers.

who are looking to better themselves. And what it comes down to is that I help people fall in love with themselves. By really digging into each person’s core, I help them uncover what’s keeping them feeling small so that they can GO BIG in their life. It’s so rewarding in so many ways. This is how it all started I decided to go see a life coach about three years ago, when I was feeling stuck and unsure of what I wanted to do next. While working with her, my self-worth really flowered and I came to see the world with a new and exciting perspective. I had such a transformational experience that I knew I wanted to help others experience the same thing. My life mantra Live Who You Are. It’s so simple and yet it can be so hard.

Now let’s be real Bartending and life coaching most definitely go hand in hand! I really do see bartending as a platform to help people feel seen and heard. Because, at the end of the day, we all pretty much want the same things, like feeling validated as we’re drinking rose and singing at the top of our lungs to Mariah Carey’s ‘All I Want For Christmas Is You’. Right?

Job description I really feel as though I hit the job jackpot. Something magical happens as you sit at the U-shaped bar – you become instant family. I don’t take it lightly that I get to curate each evening with that “home away from home” feel. I truly love what I do, and when it comes down to it, I know that what I REALLY

do is give customers a memorable experience they will never forget. It really is drinks and a show! But that's not all ... I couldn’t consider myself a New Yorker without having a good side hustle, and bartending is not all that I do. I’m also a life coach. I work one on one with people

Yes, we see famous faces It’s always fun when Broadway stars come in. I had such a fun time serving the cast of Mean Girls – they can definitely sit with us anytime they want! HOME

FOR THE HOLIDAYS This dream house has a big heart

O

ne $39m townhouse. Thirteen thousand square feet. Twenty interior designers. Eight bedrooms, a walk-in wine cellar, chef’s kitchen, and 36-foot rooftop pool. This, in numbers, is the 2018 Holiday House, a show house that features the work of interior designers from all over the city. But it’s much more than simply the sum of its parts. Because those numbers can’t describe the sensual feeling of feet sinking into lush, expensively piled carpets. Of stepping into a bedroom that belongs in a fairy tale. Or a bathroom of such exquisite luxury, you’d be willing to die there. Or the kind of kids’ room children fantasize about. Founded 11 years ago by breast cancer survivor Iris Dankner, and whose chairs include Hell’s Kitchen-based Vicente Wolf, the Holiday House was established to do far more than showcase the talents of some of the best interior decorators in New York and beyond. Over the course of 11 years, it has raised an incredible one million dollars for the Breast Cancer Research Foundation. For 2018, each designer was given the challenge of creating a space that was inspired by a holiday or a day that meant something personal to them. It’s intended to be a celebration of life, beauty, and optimism – an antidote to cancer. And beautiful things! But you don’t have long to see it in person – the 2018 Holiday House closes its doors on December 2 (though you can always buy the book, written by Hell’s Kitchen designer and friend of W42ST, Patrick J Hamilton). And, if you happen to have a $39m real estate budget … holidayhousenyc.com

Hey

NEIGHBOR!

New arrivals are landing in Manhattan every day … but this month we meet one who didn’t have to travel too far

Kori Frederick Profession: I’m a television producer/ director. Earlier this year I worked on shows for Vice, Discovery, E!, Food Network, and A&E, and I’ve just got done working on a documentary for Netflix. Moving from: I arrived in NYC seven years ago and have always lived in Hell’s Kitchen. I started on W46th St 9th/10th Ave, and then lived on 10th Ave - 49th/50th St for the last four years.

IMAGE: PHIL O’BRIEN

To: I recently moved to W47th St - 10th and 11th. Why: My old apartment was great – it was pre-war and had been gut renovated so everything was new. I even had a washer and dryer IN MY APARTMENT. But it was a bit small and I wanted a change of scenery. I honestly can’t believe I found this apartment in Hell’s Kitchen. I went from a 1/1, to a 2/2 with a huge private roof terrace. I am SO happy! I’m still unpacking boxes because, even though I moved in two months ago, I’ve been on the road for work since. I had to stay in Hell’s Kitchen: I love the neighborhood. When I started looking I really didn’t think I was going to be able to afford to stay here and get more room and outdoor space. I’d searched for places in Hell’s Kitchen, UWS, UES, East Village, and even Brooklyn. When I thought about moving, especially out of the city, it gave me severe anxiety. Seriously. My life is here. My bodega is here. How could I ever

replace the guys at the Skyline Deli? Or find a new place to just go and hang out and have dinner with people I’ve become friends with (Añejo, Jaspers, the Vintner, etc)? My new place came up on Zillow and I went to see it and immediately put money down. While I was signing paperwork, the agent got at least 12 texts from other people who wanted it. Budget: Around 3K. What I learned along the way: I realized that your home is your safe space. Hell’s Kitchen is my home. It’s where I want to come back to. It’s really easy to get around, I can walk to a lot of my jobs, but, really, it’s because the people are so amazing. It’s a community first and foremost. And I would have missed that.

Above: Kori got lucky with an incredible private roof terrace.

On my tick list: Outdoor space was the biggest thing. I have an incredible view of the skyline. I guarantee you, it’s one of the best in the city! It’s crazy! And every window has a cool view. I feel like I got really lucky.

POWER dressing Her clothes are worn by the likes of Lady Gaga, Cardi B, and Ariana Grande, but who is Victoria Hayes most proud of designing for? I like to think of myself as a proud Canadian New Yorker I’m from Toronto, and have been living in NYC for eight years. My brand is all about women, celebration, and subversive femininity I aim to make women feel beautiful and striking, so they can command space and power while being unapologetically feminine. The brand is also focused on providing a sort of “daily escapism” through fashion. Dressing should put a smile on your face and be a form of entertainment. My high point so far … Was designing a custom look for Andra Day for the 60th Grammy Awards in January – that was pretty exciting!

But seeing Shirley Manson wearing my clothes on tour is pretty amazing too I’ve always been a big fan of Garbage. I draw inspiration from everywhere For the past year I’ve been looking at a lot of retro 1970s inspiration/vibes – things like Boogie Nights, The Beverly Hills Hotel, Cher, Tony Duquette. I’ve always loved fashion … But I didn’t think I’d ever actually pursue a career in design. I didn’t apply to any art or design programs out of high school. After completing a four-year degree in health sciences, I wanted to make the switch into design – working in a hospital is just not for me. I’m excited about the opportunity to build a business from scratch and see our garments resonate with customers. We’re a very

small team and everyone has multiple roles to play at all times, so it’s often overwhelming. But I’m grateful for the opportunity to put my work out there. I get bored easily And I’m constantly trying to find ways to design garments and jewelry that are visually enticing while still being wearable. I’m not interested in quiet moments – I prefer things to be loud and in your face when it comes to fashion. My favorite part of living in HK? The food options along 9th Avenue! My favorite places are Marseille and Chimichurri Grill, and Bea on W43rd St. I also really like Ivy Nail & Spa – I’ve been getting my nails done there for eight years. victoriahayesnyc.com

The five things Need it I CRAVE FOR CHRISTMAS right now The make-up This liquid lipstick won’t smudge or budge for up to 16 hours! I put it to the test with a pastrami sandwich (with provolone and mustard, of course) from my favorite bodega on W40th St - 9th Ave and I love that it still looked polished after a full day without reapplying. Maybelline New York Super Stay Matte Ink in Dancer, $10, walmart.com The book A tale of young love in all the wrong and right ways – this is perfect for your commute to work, and just a little bit steamy. What I love most about it is the rawness of the characters, and the pinpoint New York spots we all know and love. Tell Me Lies by Carola Lovering, $18, amazon.com

The bag Do you have a lot of baggage? No, not emotional baggage. Stuff! Me too. I’ve used this gorgeous silver bag as a gym bag, a laptop bag, an overnight bag, and a regular purse. I’m someone who demands a lot of her handbag, and this one delivers. Goldno 8 reversible carryall, $265, goldno8.com

The jewels These beaded beauties are anything but ordinary. The deep ruby color makes them the perfect day-to-day piece. They’re just the right amount of flirty for date night, and polished for work. Kendra Scott rose gold earrings in maroon jade, $150, kendrascott.com

The shoes These are the shoe refresh I’ve been waiting for. So beautiful and drool worthy, I pair them with a favorite pair of dark wash jeans or a suede mini skirt. With a heel height of only 3.5 inches, I can still run to catch a cab without skimping on style. Dolce Vita Rhoda booties, $240, dolcevita.com

It’s never been more glamorous to go faux Street style during New York Fashion Week echoed one very strong trend – faux fur. While more designers stray from the real thing, I’ve been hearing the same question being repeated: “Is it wearable?” The answer: Absolutely! There’s nothing costume-y about faux fur. Think of it as an exact replacement for the real thing. The best part is that it’s still incredibly cozy. Wearing a faux fur coat can feel like slipping into a very plush robe – and who doesn’t want to feel that comfortable outside? Not into the colorful brights? Classic luxe black and white always steal the show with a glossy and warm texture. And I highly recommend sizing up to allow room for added layers and sweaters. For the ultimate flexibility, choose a solid color rather than a print. Pink marshmallow faux fur coat, $73, chicwish.com

Sober

SANTA

A 12-step program to holiday freedom

T

he holidays have arrived. Yippee! I can’t think of a more difficult time to be sober. The stressful travel arrangements, the strange family dynamics, the brewing resentments, and the purchase of 300 presents on a budget can all add up to a wish for bourbon-flavored Calgon to take us away. Lucky for you, I have been over the river and through the woods on this particular event, and am happy to submit 12 sturdy steps to holiday sobriety. Take what you like, and leave the rest.

1

JUST SAY NO When I first got sober and people told me I was allowed to say no to events that made me uncomfortable, I was aghast. Where I am from, you suck, er, soak it up. Discomfort is what the booze is for! No? I never imagined saying this was an option. Feel free to use this script: ”Dear xxx, I am feeling fragile this year and going to sit this one out. I love you and would love to celebrate later with you. Thank you for understanding.” Yes, people will be disappointed, but you will be safe. Go to the movies instead.

Below: This is not Kristen’s first rodeo – allow her to help you survive the holidays without reaching for the booze.

2

VOLUNTEER If you’re spending the holidays alone, do not sit at home and feel sorry for yourself. Isolation is a bad idea. Make plans to volunteer. There are plenty of opportunities in NYC to feed the homeless, help animal shelters, work in soup kitchens, and the like.

3

BE OF SERVICE If you do decide to go to your regularly scheduled gathering, be of assistance. Arrive early. Help Aunt Betty set the table and make coffee. Shovel the walk. Refill water glasses. Keep your hands busy. Ask how you can help.

4

SIT AT THE KIDS’ TABLE Of course, you don’t need to sit in the tiny chairs and eat chicken nugget, but you

ABOUT Kristen

can spend time with the children. Hold the babies, and get to know the younger members of your family. You will help them feel safe as much as they are helping you feel safe, and they won’t be spilling vodka on you.

5

BRING PHONE NUMBERS OF SOBER BUDDIES I can’t tell you the number of times I’ve stepped into the bathroom or out on the porch to call a sober friend. When we do this, the tension inside us instantly dissipates. You are not alone in this. A community is key. Don’t get trapped in your messed-up head. Talk to your people.

6

LEAVE PROMPTLY For newly sober people, this is a strange concept. Help clean up and leave. It is that simple. Lingering is not necessary.

7

PLAN SOBER FELLOWSHIP AFTERWARD If possible, plan to meet sober friends for coffee after. It’s a fun way to come together, let off some steam, and revisit your achievements.

8

CELEBRATE YOUR BADASSERY You never have to go through your first sober holiday again, ever! It’s already done. Next year will be WAY more comfortable. Write it on your list and check it twice. You got through it sober. Wahoo!

9

WRITE A GRATITUDE LIST When you get home, write down 12 things you are grateful for, including your willingness and courage. You sleighed it.

10

GO TO BED EARLY Nothing good ever happens past midnight.

11 12

RE-READ NUMBER 10 DON’T TEXT OR CALL HIM Go to bed, dumb ass.

Traveling to Asia alone. There’s nothing quite like having no sense of a language nor any sense of protection from anyone else but yourself. I may have traveled 15 hours mainly for the cheap facials, but that glowing skin came with an increase in character, culture, and gusto (the kind most native New Yorkers are simply born with).”

Where is it? The Row House, W59th St - 10th/11th Ave What is it? I’ve always been a fan of sitting while working out. It’s why I love the child’s pose, vigorous deep breathing, and rowing. At The Row House, a multitude of rowing classes were mine for the picking. Due to my interest in HIIT, I was pointed in the direction of the Body Class, which ended up being far less sitting than anticipated. Head rower Spencer, my instructor for the 45-minute class, reminded me quite heavily of Troy Bolton. An athlete, a motivator, but I knew there was a mean set of jazz hands in that man somewhere. He was great at pushing me, making this the perfect class for someone who has a hard time motivating themselves. I didn’t reach for water until he told me to. I didn’t go below his pace unless he told me to. I didn’t think about the ice cream truck right by the subway station unless he told me to. And, to be honest, he never did … which might be the only flaw I had with this class. Maybe one arm rowing, one arm gribbing an ice cream? Trade marking that. Get in (rowing) formation Chris, the GM of the W59th St location, was kind enough to give me the low down on rowing before my first class. And luckily enough, when broken down, rowing form isn’t as hard as you might think. Do I expect to be on Harvard’s heavyweight team in the near future? Yes. Harvard, contact me for recruitment and/or dates with your team members. Inside the room “Get’cha, get’cha head in the game,” is what I’m 92% sure I heard Troy … I mean Spencer say, although it might have been something more like: “Let’s row.” Unlike most workout classes right now in NYC, this one didn’t have a nightclub vibe that makes you feel a little drunk. And, to be fair, I always feel thinner after drinking so I see where they’re going with that. But this was a refreshing change. Dark room, yes, music, yes, but less hype, less motivation quotes, more instructions in order to get the best workout you can. Dare I say they even cared about form. Cared? It’s a new feeling for me and my dating profile. I’m off to get my head into another game but until then follow me @SophieStrawser.

The row down Founders, Eric and Debra Frolich, sit back and watch Row House expand to nearly 100 locations country wide Why did you open Row House? Debra: Many years teaching spinning and bootcamps and looking for the perfect workout we could do together! We finally found rowing, and saw a lot of people teaching it wrong. We knew that, with our background in fitness, we could crack the nut on making it most enjoyable for others. What other workouts spin your wheel? Debra: Eric also does a lot of strength training/CrossFit, and never misses a good surf session. I do yoga and still the occasional spin class, but the variety at Row House is mostly what keeps me in shape – and chasing after the kids. What does the future look like? Debra: There are three locations now, but over 100 franchise locations in development. How similar is using a row machine to actually rowing? Debra: Indoor rowing on Concept 2s is the go-to way to train for on-water rowing, so any legitimate rowers feel very at home on the C2 machine. It’s very important to us to be authentic to the sport. Rowers love their Row House workouts, but people who have never rowed also do. We love that rowing-based workouts are low-impact and full body – both on-water and indoor are exactly the same. Can we have a free class please? Debra: Of course. Any reader can enjoy a visit on the house before January 5, 2019. I

like to watch people exercise. And I don’t mean watching team-based sportsmanship or exceptional solo athletic endeavors like the marathon. I mean exercise – a chubby person on the treadmill or an obese fellow sweating it up on the elliptical. In junior high school, I had a friend named Alice. She and I were beyond best friends: we’d be chubby Asian gothic buddies for life. We’d spend hours on the phone talking about what we were going to order at the Olive Garden next time we went to the mall. Then one day everything changed. Alice found Jane Fonda. Instead of watching reruns of 21 Jump Street and eating everything in her cupboards, she’d pop in a Jane Fonda workout video and exercise, while I watched her for an hour, sometimes two. I didn’t mind. It was entertaining – the synchronized moves to the soul-busting music, Alice fumbling around in her chubby body and me, just watching, wondering: “Are chubby bodies meant to do that?” The answer was a resounding YES. Not only can chubby bodies work out, they should be doing it to Jane Fonda. Alice lost a ton of weight, got a job at the Gap, and wrangled up a boyfriend. Our friendship came to a close. But I’ve never shaken off the enjoyment of watching people exercise. I am 45% at my goal weight. And it’s been hard for all kinds of reasons. But mostly because I like food and I want to eat it. Words and food are my passions and I want

ABOUT

Claudia Claudia Chung is a writer who moonlights as a school teacher. She is currently working on a book of essays and stories on the trials, tribulations, and the funny in being a young widow.

“What’s a lazy, indulgent gal to do when she has an extra chunk in her everywhere?” my fill without having to lift a finger or a toe. Combine the two, serve it while I’m bathing, and I’m in heaven. So what’s a lazy, indulgent gal to do when she has an extra chunk in her everywhere? The truth of the matter is I gained a solid 15 pounds this year. While some may bark that this is not that much, for my small frame, I feel it everywhere – when I move, when I dress, when I sit (suddenly I’m wearing an inflatable skin donut), and when I’m having sex. It all feels …uncomfortable. So, when it came time to do something about it, all those years I watched shows like Biggest Loser, The Swan, and Extreme Makeover, I knew exactly what to do. I had to cut the bullshit. Here’s how I did it: Diet: I ate what I already owned. I’m a great meal planner in my head but I never get around to doing it. And I have a habit of buying the ingredients because I truly believe that, this time, I’ll get around to making it. But it never happens. I’ll opt to

nuke a frozen lamb vindaloo from Trader Joe’s followed by a couple of Matcha Joe-Joe’s and call it a night. Well, I did it this time. I made what I’d planned to make when I bought the ingredients. Salads. Rice wraps. Avocado toast. Quinoa bowls. I de-cluttered my kitchen, saved money, and lost a few pounds. Dining out: I love the whole experience of eating – great food, conversation, and people serving me. Also, that’s what you do when you don’t drink or smoke. Food is your pleasure. However, I only ate half of what I ordered. I’d take the rest home to eat for lunch or dinner the next day. I also packed my own lunches and snacks. Eating slower: At home, I used chopsticks to eat anything and everything. Eggs. Cookies. Fruit salad. They’re a pain in the ass but they slow me down. It’s like portion control without the portion or the control. Sometimes, I’d just say fuck it and forgo eating the whole damn thing because I found the chopsticks annoying and exhausting. And I’m Asian. Smaller portions: I eat on small plates and bowls – beautiful, vintage, itty-bitty plates. Water: I hate water. I drink liquids I find tasty: fancy, sparkling water; collagenspiked matcha lattes with a dash of cinnamon; coffee and tea. Move: So, here is the catch. And, there is always a catch. I walk on average 22,000 steps a day. I walk everywhere. I walk to and back from work – 76 blocks. With the exception of being super sick, I do this every day, Monday through Friday, rain or shine. I am not only saving money on metro card fees but I’m getting my daily exercise without much thought or effort. As you know, getting back home is always my first priority when I wake up.

Killing two birds with one phone

S

ocial media is such a staple in our everyday lives, many of us are obsessed with finding and capturing the “perfect instagram moment.” So this holiday season, you have the opportunity to kill two birds with one stone. Take your team for a night out on the town to discuss business, build camaraderie, and just have fun … while leveraging the night out as your brand’s ideal “instagramable moment.” Everybody wants to know your business is serious, but

they also want to see a business that knows how to have fun.

1

After work, and head over to Rockefeller Center to skate on one of the most iconic ice skating rinks on the planet. Surrounded by tourists and New Yorkers, overlooking the famous Christmas tree, you’re bound to capture the perfect picture of your work team to post on social media.

LIVING

JOHNNY KOLADZIEJ has called Hell’s Kitchen home for 12 years.

BACK POCKET BAR W49th St - 9th/10th Ave I was already a big fan of Pocket Bar on W48th St, so when this location opened recently I was thrilled to find that the backside is just as enjoyable as the front! A memorable visit every time as this places attracts the best folks on both sides of the bar and libations are top-notch at either location. Sangria in the front, frosé in the back!

POSH W51st St -10th/11th Ave I’ve met many of my favorite people here and we continue to go back for the cocktails, conversation, and some of the best people-watching around. Head for happy hour, which evolves into a late dance party.

OUT

DELPHINIUM HOME W47th St - 8th/9th Ave I still cannot stop in this place and resist smelling all the candles, exploring their greeting cards … especially during the holidays! No better place for finding a memorable gift for a special someone (even if that someone is yourself!)

ARRIBA ARRIBA 9th Ave - 51st St Incredible that this place has been hopping for over 30 years! The fun and festive atmosphere, tasty menu (enchiladas suizas, please), and most amazing staff are the winning combo here. Try the jalapeño margarita and be sure to order the Mama size (one that my own Mexican mama approves of).

STYLE

DONNA BELL’S BAKE SHOP W49th St, 8th/9th Ave So dang good! This cozy little spot bakes the best scones, biscuits, and hummingbird cake this side of the Hudson River. One (or more) paired with their New Orleans-style coffee and I’m good to go any morning. Laissez les bons temps rouler!

your lead to Starbucks for the thousandth time, take him or her to somewhere like Kahve on 10th Ave - 47th St to shmooze over hot chocolate. It’ll impress your client, and will demonstrate to friends (and competitors) just how busy and in demand you are!

3

For your next “drinks” meet up with a colleague, business associate, or friend, make things a little more interesting than just taking them to another bar. Get super festive at somewhere like

the Ski Chalet at Haven Rooftop, or Lillie’s Victorian Establishment. The drinks and surroundings are all “Instagram worthy” and might even make it into your company’s Christmas card or email.

4

Have a free afternoon or feel like being extra generous and taking your team out for the entire day? Head to Bryant Park Winter Village, with its shops, food options, entertainment, and, of course, ice skating. Your phones will be full of Instagramable pics.

You don’t have to wait another month for your next dose of W42ST. Subscribe to our weekly newsletter for news, giveaways, and the essential guide to the week’s happenings bit.ly/hellohellskitchen

LAST WORD

“The loneliest ebb of my life came on that Christmas Eve, only one day after my arrival in New York. The abyss of loneliness. I ate a solitary dinner in a small cafe and the very food tasted bitter with my unshed tears. One doesn’t dare cry in America. It is unmanly here.” Rudolph Valentino

G

et your lips round this little moniker: Rodolfo Alfonso Raffaello Pierre Filibert Guglielmi di Valentina d’Antonguella. The would-be silent movie heart throb arrived in New York on December 23, 1913, at the age of 18, but he didn’t stay lonely for long. He began by supporting himself doing odd jobs – at one point he waited tables at Murray’s on 42nd St, and he later became a ten-centsa-dance taxi dancer. But he had ambitions as an actor, and moved to LA, where he was more often

than not cast as the swarthy villain. His return to New York in 1917, where he met the French cinematographer Paul Ivano, was to mark a change in his fortunes. His breakthrough role came in the shape of The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse, released in 1921 – it was one of the first films to make $1,000,000 at the box office. A leading role in The Sheik, which hit the screens that same year, solidified his reputation as a sex symbol, and defined his reputation for life … and beyond. When he died suddenly in 1926, at the age of 31, the news was met with

mass hysteria. The streets of New York swarmed with 100,000 people for his funeral as his body was taken from the Frank E Campbell Funeral Church at Broadway and W66th St to the Actors’ Church, St Malachy’s, on W49th St. Eager mourners smashed windows in an attempt to see the open casket and women swooned in their droves. He was then taken by train across country for a second funeral on the west coast, and his body was buried at the Hollywood Forever Cemetery in California.
