Thank you all – it’s been REAL! Fifty issues on, Phil O’Brien has learned a thing or two about publishing, printing, and people
I
n My Life’ by The Beatles is my favorite song of all time. The lyrics resonate deeply with me. Lines like:
“There are places I'll remember All my life, though some have changed Some forever, not for better Some have gone and some remain All these places had their moments.” And ... “Though I know I'll never lose affection For people and things that went before I know I'll often stop and think about them.” I spent a day browsing through the previous 49 copies of W42ST magazine. In retrospect, I should have had this song on repeat in the background. There was a feeling of pride (and a good degree of nostalgia). Most of all, there was a connection to the people who have graced the pages of the magazine in the last four years. Real people, like you and me. No celebrity sensations, no million-follower influencers, no “too smooth to move” wannabes. Just people in this great city

surfing the stress, searching for love, and striving to live their best New York life. This has definitely been a labor of love, born out of entrepreneurial enthusiasm (and blindness). Working with Simon Kirrane (a veteran magazine launch editor) on the first issue was quite an experience: seeing the attention to the page layouts, the font choice – and particularly the paper stock (and, wow, do people love the feel of the paper!), finding the printer, sending the pages … and finally the arrival of thousands of magazines hot off the press. That was when the fun really started … I remember saying to Simon: “OK, what do we do with these now?” And he replied: “I’ve no, idea! I’m an EDITOR!” It was a steep learning curve. I’d thought being a “publisher” would mean living like Randolph Hearst or AG Sulzberger. But life suddenly became working out how to deliver thousands of magazines. Now we have a fine-tuned system that can get up to 30,000 magazines to over 1,000 locations. Thanks to Frank for being my delivery savior. It wasn’t always that way. I’ve loved seeing the delight on readers’ faces when they get their hands on each issue of the magazine. I’ve roped in friends and family to help. And I’ve kept fit while dragging a Radio Flyer around the streets of Hell’s Kitchen. On the way, we've gathered an amazing family of supporters. Our editorial contributors give of their time and talent free of charge and, from the beginning, we’ve had photographers, writers, designers, and illustrators who have just said: “How can we help? We want to be part of this.” Thank you all – we’ve loved the devotion and take pride in seeing your work grow each month. You’re a talented bunch. Our drive to connect readers has not just been on the printed page. Through our weekly newsletter, thousands of you interact directly with Ruth, and many describe it as a message from a friend on a Friday lunchtime. We also have

That means you.” a fabulous group of active Instagram followers who are our eyes on the streets. And, as well as the photos produced, we learn each other’s stories – many of our magazine features originate from a snippet of someone’s life shared on Instagram. And we’ve engaged with the W42ST family through events – each one a unique experience or discovery. We’ve been to the highest swimming pool in NYC, we’ve been on the Hudson, climbed the stairs to the top of a church, wandered around the newest penthouses … but the most important factor has been the people. And that means you. We are all about the people. But, reading through the back issues of the magazine, it wasn’t without moments of longing for places, and sadness for the business owners whose dreams have faded. I’m still grieving the loss of the Market Diner (when will that end?). And we are all aware of the changing face

of the city … the empty storefronts. My hope is for some common sense to prevail on rents and protection for small businesses. I spent some time on the Upper West Side recently, and I don’t want Hell’s Kitchen to become that. Nobody needs that many Duane Reades or ATMs! The core team of W42ST is small. Lee works part-time, designing the pages back in England. Sandra is up every morning at 5am (10am UK time) to sift through news and curate our social media feed. And Drew is out pounding the streets trying to find advertising dollars to keep our venture afloat. Thank you. Then there is Ruth and myself, working together every day to get a magazine out – and hopefully pay the bills each month. As many of you know, Ruth and I have lived a classic New York story over the last four years. After meeting at a wedding in Scotland – Ruth’s home – she came to “guest edit” issue three of the magazine. She turned out to be an amazing editor and decided to stay. And, as well as becoming a publishing team, we spent three years as a couple. For the last year or so, we’ve had the challenge of not being a couple anymore, still living together until the lease on our apartment changed, working through our emotional turmoil – and, month after month, still getting the magazine out the door. Issue 50 marks an exciting new chapter in that journey, a deep commitment to telling people’s stories, lifting each other up, and helping each of us live our best New York life. See you at 100 ...

ifty covers. Thirty-four artists. Paintings. Illustration. Comic book art. Graffiti. Paper cut. Collage. Stained glass. Digital art. Photography. We’ve covered the gamut of genres. They started with James Gulliver Hancock, the author and illustrator of All The Buildings in New York, and whose work has appeared everywhere from the Wall Street Journal to Target. The latest is by Alvaro, celebrated for his fashion illustrations and celebrity portraits. It is his fourth cover for W42ST. It’s clear people feel strongly about them: nearly 1,000 of you voted for your favorite. The most popular? Chelsey Hill's illustration for the style issue (#45). Next in line for the popular vote were Jeanine Murch's Hello Summer cover (#8), Rich Bernatovech's superhero art (#22), Ian Sklarsky's green issue (#16), and Alisa Krutovsky's style cover (#9). But each artist has contributed to making Hell’s Kitchen a more colorful place. They have our eternal gratitude and admiration. But what has been great about working with her is that she has encouraged me to expand my experience and write more opinion and research-based articles, moving away from reviews. Breaking news: I’ve just completed my degree in children’s literature, and can often be found working on a manuscript in one of my favorite little wine bars, Ardesia or Vanguard, on a Saturday afternoon, plotting out ideas. I’ve lived in Hell’s Kitchen for almost four years with my husband Brendan. Moving from North Carolina in 2015 to pursue a career in fashion, I had no idea how much I would love it here. Growing up, I always dreamed of living in the heart of New York City. And now that I do, I can say wholeheartedly that it does not disappoint. Aside from being W42ST’s style columnist and “fashion girl,” I am also a fashion assistant at a national publication, fashion stylist, blogger, and style influencer. Every day feels like such a joy to do what I love. Greatest hit: My absolute favorite piece I’ve worked on with W42ST was my very first one. My best friend and former neighbor photographed me in the neighborhood running around in vintage pieces from Couture du Jour – which also happens to be my favorite shopping destination in the neighborhood. HK happy place: My hobbies include going to Galaxy diner on 9th Ave - 46th St (try the eggs Florentine), sample sales, drinking iced coffee, and going to the Korean spa with my love. I’m an artist and poet, and the voice behind Soul Soup, a media company that features original paintings, prints, books, and greeting cards. Breaking news: I recently started a weekly podcast entitled Sober in the City, examining the ambiguous hallways in between life’s personal crucifixions and mini resurrections. So I got this job working for a nightclub and I was literally writing press releases for drinks specials. I wanted to shoot myself. “There was a piano, so I decided to throw a party one Christmas. I have a lot of great friends, and everybody came. We all went up to the piano, as everybody in our business does somehow, and people stayed until 4am. They were drinking and eating and the nightclub had never seen a pile of people like this before. “The next day they called and asked if we’d do it again, every Monday. We’ve met hundreds of incredible New Yorkers over the course of the last 50 issues – from drag queens to Broadway stars to club hosts to a contortionist. I walked out on the sidewalk and asked this man, ‘Do you know where 10th Ave is?’ Without missing a step, he said, ‘Go f*ck yourself.' It was the last all-nude male review where the dancers came out fully nude and fully erect.”

Intellect was always instilled in my make up, educating myself and being secure. “Learning and asking questions brought me to be the together woman I am today, and able to pay it forward and school not only young transgender children but just people in general. Against the backdrop of new musicals and porn on W40th St, Shakina would share a sort of makeshift bedroom with a porn star. He’d be there during the week. She’d live there at weekends. “We’d just share the sheets. I did feel, ‘I’m living the New York life I read about. I’m doing it! “There was no kitchen, no heat at night or the weekends, I used the public restroom all the guests of the theater used. But at least there was a shower. Because, before it was a porn studio and a musical theater factory, it was a cage fighting gym. Those showers had gotten more than their fair share of use from the porn company as well.” Now, she says, living in Hell’s Kitchen is like living on campus. “Sometimes my friends and I will go to Five Napkin Burger and get a table on the corner and we’ll just hold court on a Saturday afternoon. We’ll sit there and people will pass by and we’ll say hi and give hugs. Over the course of an hour or two we’ll see 20 different friends.” Photograph: Phil O’Brien

People were going out less, nesting more, and entertaining friends and family at home. We decided to open a store that catered to those feathering-the-nest needs. We never looked anywhere other than Hell’s Kitchen. We always liked this neighborhood because it’s like a village within the city. Intercontinental Times Square (issue 8) ¼ cup fresh blueberries 1 tsp sugar in the raw 3oz Bacardi Superior 4oz house infused ginger vinegar soda (substitute ginger beer) Ice
1. Select a highball glass and fill the bottom of glass with fresh blueberries. 2. Sprinkle brown sugar over the fruit. 3. Muddle until the sugar has dissolved. 4. Top with ice. 5. Add 3oz Bacardi and stretch with house-infused ginger vinegar soda. 6. Stir and enjoy. “Chef Rory McDonald throws away any hopes of recreating authentic Chinese sweets and instead lets his creative muscles flex, getting inspired by local products and farms, sometimes with a broadly Asian flourish as he includes ingredients like black sesame, kalamansi limes, or jasmine rice. “A high point is the frozen apricot bavarois, a beautiful orange ring of apricot frozen cream sat atop a perfectly portioned black sesame florentine. Edible flowers and sensationally succulent summer fruit of every color decorate the top. And then – oof – the kalamansi sorbet on the side makes it just perfect. Honestly, I’d be happy just eating that sorbet and Florentine all night long. The cold sorbet gives a sour punch that is balanced by the buttery caramel and purposely bitter Florentine. With each bite, I like the dish more and more. “Another impressively gorgeous dessert is McDonald’s strawberries and champagne. The dish sounds as complex and flashy as you’d expect for the VIP space: vanilla panna cotta, lemon crumble, rhubarb sorbet, fresh summer strawberries, champagne foam and a lacey spun sugar topper. Yet, when the dish arrives it somehow feels understated. The sugar art on top casts shadows over the rest of the dessert. The old guard For our food issue in May 2016, we celebrated longstanding businesses that have managed to survive the onslaught of Starbucks and Panda Express: 9th Avenue International Grocery, Rudy’s, Leon Bakery, Little Pie Company, Esposito, Poseidon, Tavola, Lali. All are still, happily, doing business in Hell’s Kitchen. master baker, on what kept those early days interesting (issue 29) “When I first opened Amy’s Bread, the drug addicts and prostitutes would smell the bread and reach into our grate to try to grab fresh bread off the cooling racks. In those early years, I’d finish baking at 4am and hop on my bike, riding uptown on the sidewalk as fast as I could to W55th St, since 10th Ave was too scary at that hour. “That block was the sketchiest in upper Hell’s Kitchen since there were only three small apartment buildings, and the rest of the street was filled with dark warehouses. Cab drivers used that street as their outdoor restroom. And if I came home late at night, I’d need to watch out for the rats scurrying in and out of the building, and I’d often have to step over crack addicts that slept in the vestibule. “The oddly shaped building began its life in 1962 as a Sheraton Motor Inn, designed by Morris Lapidus (who also was the lead architect for Miami Beach’s famous hotels, including the neo-Baroque Fontainebleu and Eden Roc. “In 1971, New York Magazine said, ‘Room service at the Sheraton Motor Inn … wasn’t it conceived as a cheaters’ hideaway? Would any tourist in full possession of their sensitivities really choose to lodge overlooking the drudge of the West Side Highway and the venomous Hudson?’ “Back in the day, it boasted a revolving piano lounge and a rooftop swimming pool … Kate Smith, whose vibrant voice made 'God Bless America' an unofficial national anthem, for many years rented a three-bedroom suite at the top of the hotel. designer, W57th St - 9th/10th Ave (issue 19) “Since I always want something new, I’m working with all the colors in the crayon box. I just like the vibrancy. I have a theory about color. They don’t mix and match, they have relationships. A lot of times, it’s the ones that are right next to each other, the ones people might call clashing, that I think are most exciting.” When he moved into his apartment five years ago, the first design element to appear were the black stripes of duct tape lining the walls. The rest of the taping evolved from there. “One week I’d decided on this arbitrary pink, yellow, black scheme. Then I thought, ‘Why am I putting constraints on myself?’ So I started thinking military stripes, nautical flagging, I just thought, ‘Let’s do everything. And that’s exactly what I want, because this is not what you buy from Restoration Hardware or Ikea.
