Can you remember your first time? How was it for you? Mine was four years ago. Snowmaggedon was happening outside and I can still feel the giddy sense of anticipation ... that something incredible and life-changing was about to happen. New York City seduced me. In two weeks, I was hers. She took me out, got me drunk, and made me forget all the other cities. That raw, wild passion you get at the start of an affair? It blinds you. It makes you kind of crazy. It makes you take your clothes off and go dancing in the rain ... It’s not sustainable, that vida loca. Eventually, living your best life becomes more about making good choices. The little lady in your hands – this beautiful magazine – turns 50 this month. She has a job to do and bills to pay. But she’s doing it in a long term relationship with the greatest city in the world. If any of this resonates, consider yourself part of the W42ST family. In these pages, you’ll meet some of the smart, funny, wildly creative humans who are on that journey with you.

Thank you all – it’s been REAL! Fifty issues on, Phil O’Brien has learned a thing or two about publishing, printing, and people

I

n My Life’ by The Beatles is my favorite song of all time. The lyrics resonate deeply with me. Lines like:

“There are places I'll remember All my life, though some have changed Some forever, not for better Some have gone and some remain All these places had their moments.” And ... “Though I know I'll never lose affection For people and things that went before I know I'll often stop and think about them.” I spent a day browsing through the previous 49 copies of W42ST magazine. In retrospect, I should have had this song on repeat in the background. There was a feeling of pride (and a good degree of nostalgia). Most of all, there was a connection to the people who have graced the pages of the magazine in the last four years. Real people, like you and me. No celebrity sensations, no million-follower influencers, no “too smooth to move” wannabes. Just people in this great city

surfing the stress, searching for love, and striving to live their best New York life. This has definitely been a labor of love, born out of entrepreneurial enthusiasm (and blindness). Working with Simon Kirrane (a veteran magazine launch editor) on the first issue was quite an experience: seeing the attention to the page layouts, the font choice – and particularly the paper stock (and, wow, do people love the feel of the paper!), finding the printer, sending the pages … and finally the arrival of thousands of magazines hot off the press. That was when the fun really started … I remember saying to Simon: “OK, what do we do with these now?” And he replied: “I’ve no, idea! I’m an EDITOR!” It was a steep learning curve. I’d thought being a “publisher” would mean living like Randolph Hearst or AG Sulzberger. But life suddenly became working out how to deliver thousands of magazines. Now we have a fine-tuned system that can get up to 30,000 magazines to over 1,000 locations. Thanks to Frank for being my delivery savior. It wasn’t always that way. I’ve loved seeing the delight on readers’ faces when they get their hands on each issue of the magazine. I’ve roped in friends and family to help. And I’ve kept fit while dragging a Radio Flyer around the streets of Hell’s Kitchen. On the way, we've gathered an amazing family of supporters. Our editorial contributors give of their time and talent free of charge and, from the beginning, we’ve had photographers, writers, designers, and illustrators who have just said: “How can we help? We want to be part of this.” Thank you all – we’ve loved the devotion and take pride in seeing your work grow each month. You’re a talented bunch. Our drive to connect readers has not just been on the printed page. Through our weekly newsletter, thousands of you interact directly with Ruth, and many describe it as a message from a friend on a Friday lunchtime. We also have

“We’ve been to the highest swimming pool in NYC, we’ve been on the Hudson, climbed the stairs to the top of a church, wandered around the newest penthouses … but the most important factor has been the people. That means you.” a fabulous group of active Instagram followers who are our eyes on the streets. And, as well as the photos produced, we learn each other’s stories – many of our magazine features originate from a snippet of someone’s life shared on Instagram. And we’ve engaged with the W42ST family through events – each one a unique experience or discovery. We’ve been to the highest swimming pool in NYC, we’ve been on the Hudson, climbed the stairs to the top of a church, wandered around the newest penthouses … but the most important factor has been the people. And that means you. We are all about the people. But, reading through the back issues of the magazine, it wasn’t without moments of longing for places, and sadness for the business owners whose dreams have faded. I’m still grieving the loss of the Market Diner (when will that end?). And we are all aware of the changing face

Below (left to right): Simon Kirrane and Phil with thousands of copies of Issue 1. Now ... what next?; Phil, Ruth, and 49 covers; the muchmissed Market Diner; Phil's son, Joe, helps with distribution; Belle Bakst, brings some style to our Radio Flyer deliveries.

of the city … the empty storefronts. My hope is for some common sense to prevail on rents and protection for small businesses. I spent some time on the Upper West Side recently, and I don’t want Hell’s Kitchen to become that. Nobody needs that many Duane Reades or ATMs! The core team of W42ST is small. Lee works part-time, designing the pages back in England. Sandra is up every morning at 5am (10am UK time) to sift through news and curate our social media feed. And Drew is out pounding the streets trying to find advertising dollars to keep our venture afloat. Thank you. Then there is Ruth and myself, working together every day to get a magazine out – and hopefully pay the bills each month. As many of you know, Ruth and I have lived a classic New York story over the last four years. After meeting at a wedding in Scotland – Ruth’s home – she came to “guest edit” issue three of the magazine. She turned out to be an amazing editor and decided to stay. And, as well as becoming a publishing team, we spent three years as a couple. For the last year or so, we’ve had the challenge of not being a couple anymore, still living together until the lease on our apartment changed, working through our emotional turmoil – and, month after month, still getting the magazine out the door. Issue 50 marks an exciting new chapter in that journey, a deep commitment to telling people’s stories, lifting each other up, and helping each of us live our best New York life. See you at 100 ...

ifty covers. Thirty-four artists. Paintings. Illustration. Comic book art. Graffiti. Paper cut. Collage. Stained glass. Digital art. Photography. We’ve covered the gamut of genres. They started with James Gulliver Hancock, the author and illustrator of All The Buildings in New York, and whose work has appeared everywhere from the Wall Street Journal to Target. The latest is by Alvaro, celebrated for his fashion illustrations and celebrity portraits. It is his fourth cover for W42ST. It’s clear people feel strongly about them: nearly 1,000 of you voted for your favorite. The most popular? Chelsey Hill's illustration for the style issue (#45). Next in line for the popular vote were Jeanine Murch's Hello Summer cover (#8), Rich Bernatovech's superhero art (#22), Ian Sklarsky's green issue (#16), and Alisa Krutovsky's style cover (#9). But each artist has contributed to making Hell’s Kitchen a more colorful place. They have our eternal gratitude and admiration. Here are some key highlights in all their glory – along with a few early sketches that inspired a cover.

Here’s to the talent

If it takes a village to raise a child, it takes a small army to bring this baby to life every month. Our eternal gratitude goes out to all the writers, photographers, and artists who have given of their time and their talents. This is a tiny selection ...

Mary Geneva

I'm a sales professional by day and a hopeful romantic by night. Married at age 21 and divorced at 26, me and my cat Diva picked ourselves up by our bootstraps and settled in Hell’s Kitchen in 2012. I’m the author of Nicknames, Tales from the Shallow End of the Manhattan Dating Pool and blogger at That’s So Mary. Greatest hit: W42ST has the power to bring people together. It has given me a platform to not only share my dating trials and tribulations but also to interview my neighbors about their experiences, some of whom have become good friends. I’ve been blessed to connect with new people in a way I don’t feel you can find in any other neighborhood in the city. Connect: @marygenevanyc

Claudia Chung

After my journalist partner of nine years suddenly died of a cardiac arrest in 2017, I began writing a regular column for W42ST, chronicling my successes, mishaps, and self-made emotional catastrophes as I navigated the world as a newly widowed young woman. I’ve lived in Hell’s Kitchen for nearly a decade. HK happy place: Esposito’s Meat Market – a bloody steak makes the world go round. Breaking news: I’m currently working on a book of essays.

David Porter

Vicky Kuperman

I’m a comedian and author who has lived in Hell's Kitchen for 17 years. My husband, Max Cohen, and I adopted our dog, Coach, three years ago. Coach enjoys manipulating the employees at the liquor store, the bank, the pet store, and the vet for free treats. Greatest hit: A highlight of working with W42ST was before I even became a contributor! It was when Ruth interviewed me and my best friend and co-author, Isabella Patrick, for a spying feature in August 2017. Breaking news: I just started a new podcast, She's Got Issues, where comedians and experts come together for a fun and lively discussion about the issues facing people, animals, and the planet. Connect: @vickykuperman

Sophia Strawser

I’m the fitness writer for W42ST and a comedic screenwriter with a love of working out, drinking coffee, and silently judging people’s fashion choices. With a web series out called Tipping Point and many scripts in the works, I find myself at Old Country Coffee, religiously editing, writing, and sipping. Greatest hit: I’m thrilled to be a part of W42ST’s 50th issue and look forward to doing some “heavy lifting” to keep it going forward 50 more issues. Connect: @sophiastrawser

I’ve been a record store cashier, a dishwasher, a prep cook … I taught undergraduate creative writing … I wanted to be first mate on a pirate ship, but the industry was offshored to Somalia and I didn’t want to relocate. Greatest hit: I’m honored to be on a roster that includes Jim Caruso, Claudia Chung, Kristen Jongen, Vicky Kuperman, Tyler Mount, editor Ruth Walker, and publisher Phil O’Brien, and I’m thrilled to see my articles in such a beautiful magazine. Every cover is a work of art. HK happy place: Tom Otterness’s Silver Towers Playground. My son loves it, and it reminds me that if creativity were oil, New York would be a thousand Saudi Arabias.

A native of Hell's Kitchen, my photographic work has appeared in The Washington Post, London Financial Times, and Gay City News. Greatest hit: Whether documenting the unique character of my neighborhood or creating a stunning eco-friendly fashion interpretation of the four elements, working with Ruth Walker at W42ST has given me the amazing opportunity to interact with my beloved community and the freedom to discover the many layers of my journalistic voice. Breaking news: I recently won second place for Best Photo Story by the New York Press Association. I also incorporate my photo essay expertise to Day In The Life Family Photography, a personalized, authentic alternative to traditional family photography. Connect: @cmilesstudio

I moved to Hell’s Kitchen four years ago with my husband and can't think of a better place to live. Greatest hit: When Ruth asked me to start writing reviews and feature articles for W42ST, I thought I’d landed a dream role, reviewing Broadway theater. But what has been great about working with her is that she has encouraged me to expand my experience and write more opinion and research-based articles, moving away from reviews. Breaking news: I’ve just completed my degree in children’s literature, and can often be found working on a manuscript in one of my favorite little wine bars, Ardesia or Vanguard, on a Saturday afternoon, plotting out ideas. My New Year’s resolution is to look out for writing opportunities and get my children’s book published. Connect: @MattDSilva

Belle Bakst

I’ve lived in Hell’s Kitchen for almost four years with my husband Brendan. Moving from North Carolina in 2015 to pursue a career in fashion, I had no idea how much I would love it here. Growing up, I always dreamed of living in the heart of New York City. And now that I do, I can say wholeheartedly that it does not disappoint. Aside from being W42ST’s style columnist and “fashion girl,” I am also a fashion assistant at a national publication, fashion stylist, blogger, and style influencer. Every day feels like such a joy to do what I love. Greatest hit: My absolute favorite piece I’ve worked on with W42ST was my very first one. My best friend and former neighbor photographed me in the neighborhood running around in vintage pieces from Couture du Jour – which also happens to be my favorite shopping destination in the neighborhood. HK happy place: My hobbies include going to Galaxy diner on 9th Ave - 46th St (try the eggs Florentine), sample sales, drinking iced coffee, and going to the Korean spa with my love. Connect: @littlefashionstylist

Samina Kalloo

I’m a registered dietitian-nutritionist and mother of two, living in Hell’s Kitchen. I partner with like-minded food brands to develop effective nutrition messaging. And, through my blog, I share recipes and nutrition tips for families. Greatest hit: The first article I wrote for W42ST in April 2016, about nutrigenomics. I remember being so excited to share the latest research and to see my words come to life. HK happy place: When my husband and I have a date night, we love stopping into Little Pie Company to share a slice of their signature sour cream apple walnut pie. Connect: @cookingfortots

Kristen Jongen

I’m an artist and poet, and the voice behind Soul Soup, a media company that features original paintings, prints, books, and greeting cards. My work has been featured in The New York Times, Chicago Tribune, and Huff Post, and I’ve written and published two books. I share my space with my children and poodle Beezus. Breaking news: I recently started a weekly podcast entitled Sober in the City, examining the ambiguous hallways in between life’s personal crucifixions and mini resurrections. HK happy place: It’s not hidden, but it is definitely a gem – I like the public library on 10th Ave - 50th/51st St, for its quiet vibe away from the hustle and the calming energy to write in. Connect: @sober_inthe_ city

I’m an international IPA-awarded portraiture photographer from Costa Rica. I moved to Hell’s Kitchen four years ago Greatest hit: A collection of portraits called "Hellskitcheners" that depicts the diverse community the inhabits the far west side, from Iron Chefs and Broadway actors, to writers, producers, politicians, and designers. Breaking news: This February, I’ll be having a massive exhibition at the The Jade Museum of Costa Rica – a collection of portraits about the master sculptor Jimenez Deredia. Jim Caruso

host, Cast Party (issue 11) “I’d decided to give up showbusiness. Showbusiness was furious. Showbusiness didn’t care. So I got this job working for a nightclub and I was literally writing press releases for drinks specials. I wanted to shoot myself. “There was a piano, so I decided to throw a party one Christmas. I have a lot of great friends, and everybody came. We all went up to the piano, as everybody in our business does somehow, and people stayed until 4am. They were drinking and eating and the nightclub had never seen a pile of people like this before. “The next day they called and asked if we’d do it again, every Monday. Cut to 13 years later, we’re still doing it.” Photograph: Dustin Cohen

Greatest hits

We’ve met hundreds of incredible New Yorkers over the course of the last 50 issues – from drag queens to Broadway stars to club hosts to a contortionist. These are just some of some of their best moments. Barry Reeves writer (issue 8) “I’ve loved this neighborhood since the first day I stepped off a bus at Port Authority in 1991. I walked out on the sidewalk and asked this man, ‘Do you know where 10th Ave is?’ Without missing a step, he said, ‘Go f*ck yourself.' It was at that exact point, that precious moment, that I fell in love with this city. Saying that to an Irishman is the equivalent to saying, ‘Welcome to town.’” Photograph: Nacho Guevara

James Twigg concierge (issue 14)

Bianca Mann

drag queen (issue 14) “My bra wasn’t properly clasped and my boobs ended up near my belly, but that didn’t stop me putting on an amazing performance.”

“My friendship group with other Hell’s Kitcheners has grown to the point where it is now hard to walk down 9th Ave without being stopped every block, and I love it. I feel at home. I call Gladys [who sadly passed in September 2016] at my local Frank’s liquor store Mom (she even cooked me Christmas lunch every year) – she and my Russian barber/life coach make up my new family.”

George Hahn writer/podcaster (issue 9)

“My first little apartment was $595 a month in a doorman building. And when I moved, there were still porn theaters and street hookers on 8th Ave … it was a neighborhood with teeth and balls. I enjoyed the dark and twisted pageantry of it. And I did go to the Gaiety Theater on 46th and Broadway (now American Eagle) more than once. It was the last all-nude male review where the dancers came out fully nude and fully erect.”

Lina Bradford DJ (issue 18) “Coming from a biracial, supportive family, I never knew I was anything but who I was. Intellect was always instilled in my make up, educating myself and being secure. “Learning and asking questions brought me to be the together woman I am today, and able to pay it forward and school not only young transgender children but just people in general. People place too much emphasis on labels – I find that it hinders people and limits.” Photograph: Andre Watson

Marcelo Gomes principal

dancer and choreographer (issue 18) “What makes it home is the peacefulness of it all. I don’t watch TV that much, even though I have one. I just like to be quiet in the house, just feeling blessed that I have one. I know that buying in Manhattan is incredibly expensive. I’ve worked very hard to become a principal dancer. And now I have a little roof over my head where I can decompress, a place where my dog can live. We both live a very happy life here.” Photograph: Dustin Cohen

Brad Hoylman politician (issue 20)

“Trump belongs on a reality show, not the Oval Office. His name is on a few atrocious real estate projects in New York City, but Trump does not represent my New York. He’s a clown in a nice suit.”

Joe Iconis composer/performer (issue 20) “The rehearsal space 777 Studios used to be a porn theater, and I love that you can rehearse a musical in the exact same spot where sexual deviancy once prevailed. That mix of seediness and glitz really defines the neighborhood for me.” Photograph: Nacho Guevara

Shakina Nayfack actress (issue 23)

Against the backdrop of new musicals and porn on W40th St, Shakina would share a sort of makeshift bedroom with a porn star. He’d be there during the week. She’d live there at weekends. “We’d just share the sheets. I did feel, ‘I’m living the New York life I read about. I’m doing it! “There was no kitchen, no heat at night or the weekends, I used the public restroom all the guests of the theater used. But at least there was a shower. Because, before it was a porn studio and a musical theater factory, it was a cage fighting gym. Those showers had gotten more than their fair share of use from the porn company as well.” Now, she says, living in Hell’s Kitchen is like living on campus. “Sometimes my friends and I will go to Five Napkin Burger and get a table on the corner and we’ll just hold court on a Saturday afternoon. We’ll sit there and people will pass by and we’ll say hi and give hugs. Over the course of an hour or two we’ll see 20 different friends.” Photograph: Phil O’Brien

Loris Diran

fashion designer (issue 27) “To this day, I can’t walk down W46th St without seeing myself doing a twirl off a car hood during the street scene which is so iconic in the film Fame. Isaac Mizrahi was a high school friend that appeared in the film with me. I can still remember seeing him while we were both cutting math class to have a late breakfast at the Cuban cafe that is still there down the street. Hell’s Kitchen is quite emotionally loaded for me.” Photograph: Nacho Guevara

“Really, it just started with the opportunity. I would just tackle whatever was trending at the moment. When the Kim Davis thing happened [the Kentucky county clerk who refused to issue marriage licenses to gay couples], I did a spoof on her. It was the Cell Block Tango, and that got four million views on Facebook. That was my first time seeing numbers like that. I looked at my phone and I had 1,000 messages in my inbox. You’ll find me in a HK cafe writing, memorizing, promoting, rehearsing, etc. I can walk around the neighborhood all day and no one has any idea who I am until it’s showtime and I’m all decked out. Telly Leung

Aladdin actor (issue 34) “I’d come up to Hell’s Kitchen to see a movie at the $3 movie theater and hang out at Worldwide Plaza. I spent so much of my time hanging out in this hood during my high school years, lining up at the TKTS booth for a half-price ticket or sleeping with the bums on W41st St for my $20 Rent ticket. Those years were so formative to me because I fell in love with NY and theater and this neighborhood. Subconsciously, I think I always dreamed of making the theater district my home.”

Jenn Gambatese

Broadway actor (issue 33) “Man, there’s something about Broadway. I don’t know if it’s the audience’s expectations, maybe it’s my own childhood dreams – I wanted this and I get to do it. It’s really unlike any other art form.”

“The New York audience is not very forgiving. We have so much art around us that I think sometimes it’s hard to appreciate. I perform in Chicago a lot and if I just walk on stage and tell a joke and fart, they’re like, ‘OH MY GOD! YOU’RE SO AMAZING!’ If I’m in New York I could set myself on fire and you guys are like … *slow hand clap* “We have to work very, very hard to make the audience excited."

“One time, a woman took her shoes off in the middle of a Broadway show, crossed her legs and her bare foot was right next to me. I turned and said, ‘Excuse me, do you mind putting your shoes on? I don’t want to sit next to your bare feet.’ How do you like that?"

David: “My wife and I lived in an apartment on W44th St - 9th/10th Ave that overlooked the pigeon colony, and were able to see the whole circle of life. Luisa Cerutti and Nicki Lindheimer owners Domus (issue 48)

“After 9.11 we had an epiphany, like many New Yorkers, and decided we wanted to work together in a business with more heart. People were going out less, nesting more, and entertaining friends and family at home. We decided to open a store that catered to those feathering-the-nest needs. We never looked anywhere other than Hell’s Kitchen. We always liked this neighborhood because it’s like a village within the city. The sense of community is very strong and we would see people and greet each other on the street all the time (and that hasn’t changed). “The community immediately embraced us and what we stand for, not just by purchasing our goods, but by showing kindness in so many ways, like bringing us home-made food on long working days, or sharing an article we may be interested in, or giving us theater tickets.” Photograph: Phil O’Brien

Corey Johnson

house speaker (issue 44)

“The alarm goes off at 2am (as the Empire State Building is about to go dark – I often catch its final light show of the night). Hell’s Kitchen is very quiet at that time, except for Friday mornings, when there’s a lot of people partying. Otherwise it’s just me, the garbage man, and maybe an Uber driver here or there.”

“I still want to go dancing, and I still want to be myself. Sometimes you can get inside of a bubble and lose the level of authenticity that I think is important, not just for an elected official but for everyone. Everyone should live their best life and be who they are. As Lady Gaga said, ‘Baby, I was born this way.'"

TJ English

author The Westies (issue 48) “I feel the book has become part of the lore of the neighborhood. And part of that, I feel, is that it’s so much about a neighborhood, a community, and all these issues of loyalty as defined in the streets of New York. Hell’s Kitchen was always a neighborhood where loyalty was a treacherous fault line. “I was lamenting that loss of community. It was a melting pot neighborhood and people felt a real connection to it. They weren’t just passing through or doing commerce, they were really tight. There was a sense that they were under siege from all these forces – social forces, crime, everything. And that brought everyone closer together.” Photograph: Steve Hill

Peter Shankman businessman (issue 44) “I travel non-stop for work. Ever city I’m in, I try and imagine myself living there. I imagine paying a tenth of the mortgage/expenses I pay now. I imagine a less frenetic pace, a less crazy 'whomp' that hits you square in the gut the moment you exit your building. I imaging having a car, and driving to the local store for coffee, milk, cheese, bread, and eggs, and knowing everyone’s name, and smiling all day as we see each other. And I can imagine those things easily. But you know what I can’t imagine? NOT paying as much as I pay. NOT having a frenetic pace punching me in the stomach when I leave the apartment. NOT zig-zagging past the tourists and never having to slow my pace. I can’t imagine not doing any of that. NYC is my home. “I wholeheartedly believe we need to spend less time on devices, but I’m learning that the ‘phones are killing us’ rhetoric doesn’t help me with the time that I am spending online. Blaming devices revokes my power, casts me as the victim, and renders me helpless. It also lets me off the hook and fails to hold me fully responsible for my behavior. Dessert at Hakkasan (issue 9)

THE WAY WE EAT

“Chef Rory McDonald throws away any hopes of recreating authentic Chinese sweets and instead lets his creative muscles flex, getting inspired by local products and farms, sometimes with a broadly Asian flourish as he includes ingredients like black sesame, kalamansi limes, or jasmine rice. “A high point is the frozen apricot bavarois, a beautiful orange ring of apricot frozen cream sat atop a perfectly portioned black sesame florentine. Edible flowers and sensationally succulent summer fruit of every color decorate the top. And then – oof – the kalamansi sorbet on the side makes it just perfect. Honestly, I’d be happy just eating that sorbet and Florentine all night long. The cold sorbet gives a sour punch that is balanced by the buttery caramel and purposely bitter Florentine. With each bite, I like the dish more and more. “Another impressively gorgeous dessert is McDonald’s strawberries and champagne. The dish sounds as complex and flashy as you’d expect for the VIP space: vanilla panna cotta, lemon crumble, rhubarb sorbet, fresh summer strawberries, champagne foam and a lacey spun sugar topper. Yet, when the dish arrives it somehow feels understated. The sugar art on top casts shadows over the rest of the dessert. Cracking through it gives me the same thrill as digging into a great crème brulée, but with way more surprises waiting beneath.” Words: Hillary Reeves Photograph: Robin Riley

Seamus Mullen

in praise of a clean diet (issue 15) “I’d wake up every morning with swollen hands and in pain, and it’s really hard to just soldier through it and put on a smile and pretend everything’s OK. You get to a point where you think there’s no path out of where you are. I’d forgotten what it felt like to not be in pain. “But once you get a taste for waking up every morning not feeling like crap, you never want to wake up feeling like crap again.” Photographs: Nacho Guevara

Zachary Schmahl cookie master (issue 16)

“After college, I left Nebraska to pursue a career in acting. After realizing the business wasn’t for me, I was on the hunt for a career that still fuelled me creatively. I had been baking cookies as a hobby since childhood and never even considered it as a way to make money. “After two months, Schmackary’s was already starting to take off and I had to quit my job. A year later, I landed the first storefront. “One time Sarah Bareilles came in and we all kinda freaked out. I also fangirled a bit when Wallace Shawn first came into the store. I may have actually said ‘inconceivable’ to his face.” Photograph: Nacho Guevara

50 THE WAY WE EAT

The old guard For our food issue in May 2016, we celebrated longstanding businesses that have managed to survive the onslaught of Starbucks and Panda Express: 9th Avenue International Grocery, Rudy’s, Leon Bakery, Little Pie Company, Esposito, Poseidon, Tavola, Lali. All are still, happily, doing business in Hell’s Kitchen. The only one we photographed that has disappeared from our neighborhood landscape is the colorful Tobacco Road, which was on W40th St - 9th Ave. Photograph: Christian Miles

Erol Zeren on the famous customers he’s served at Kahve coffee (issue 17)

“We’ve had people such as Christian Bale, Stephen Colbert, Woody Harrelson, and, my all-time favorite, Susan Iucci (Susan’s daughter-in-law lives in the neighborhood and has promised to bring her by again, though I’ll probably flip out when she arrives!)”

Bruno Magnun bartender, on what happens when 44&X closes (issue 26)

“On Thursday nights after our shift we go to Dalton’s the Irish sports pub. It becomes a karaoke bar every Thursday and Sunday, and lots of people from the food industry get together for a 1990s and Disney sing-off.” Photograph: Michael Young

Amy Scherber

master baker, on what kept those early days interesting (issue 29) “When I first opened Amy’s Bread, the drug addicts and prostitutes would smell the bread and reach into our grate to try to grab fresh bread off the cooling racks. In those early years, I’d finish baking at 4am and hop on my bike, riding uptown on the sidewalk as fast as I could to W55th St, since 10th Ave was too scary at that hour. “That block was the sketchiest in upper Hell’s Kitchen since there were only three small apartment buildings, and the rest of the street was filled with dark warehouses. Cab drivers used that street as their outdoor restroom. And if I came home late at night, I’d need to watch out for the rats scurrying in and out of the building, and I’d often have to step over crack addicts that slept in the vestibule. My upstairs neighbor and friend always had her frying pan ready to protect me from a potential intruder." Photograph: Phil O’Brien

50 THE WAY WE LIVE

Apartment style Our places are small, our budgets limited, but, OMG, we make the most of what we have. Here are some of our favorites over the last 50 issues

The checkered history of the Chinese Consulate W42nd St - 12th Ave (issue 9)

“The oddly shaped building began its life in 1962 as a Sheraton Motor Inn, designed by Morris Lapidus (who also was the lead architect for Miami Beach’s famous hotels, including the neo-Baroque Fontainebleu and Eden Roc. “In 1971, New York Magazine said, ‘Room service at the Sheraton Motor Inn … wasn’t it conceived as a cheaters’ hideaway? Would any tourist in full possession of their sensitivities really choose to lodge overlooking the drudge of the West Side Highway and the venomous Hudson?’ “Back in the day, it boasted a revolving piano lounge and a rooftop swimming pool … Kate Smith, whose vibrant voice made 'God Bless America' an unofficial national anthem, for many years rented a three-bedroom suite at the top of the hotel. Occasionally, she would visit the patio roof, giving her breezy ‘hell-ooo’ to the swimmers watching the ocean liners parked at the pier below.” Photograph: franklavaarchiv.de

Eddie Lee W47th St - 10th/11th Ave (issue 13) “I always fantasized about having a white on white apartment, but it’s just not me. I’m not a minimalist, as much as I’d like to be. I love reading, I love entertaining and movies and art – this apartment is an expression of who I am. “I’ve lived in New York for 22 years so didn’t want a concierge building. I was looking for lofty, open, tall ceilings, which is hard to find unless you have about $2m.” Photograph: Patrick Cline

Jason Witcher artist/hairdresser/

designer, W57th St - 9th/10th Ave (issue 19) “Since I always want something new, I’m working with all the colors in the crayon box. I just like the vibrancy. I have a theory about color. They don’t mix and match, they have relationships. A lot of times, it’s the ones that are right next to each other, the ones people might call clashing, that I think are most exciting.” When he moved into his apartment five years ago, the first design element to appear were the black stripes of duct tape lining the walls. The rest of the taping evolved from there. “One week I’d decided on this arbitrary pink, yellow, black scheme. Then I thought, ‘Why am I putting constraints on myself?’ So I started thinking military stripes, nautical flagging, I just thought, ‘Let’s do everything. Go to Michael’s, buy every single roll of duct tape they have …’ and that’s what I did. It’s all a play on checks and stripes.” Photograph: Nacho Guevara

Erin Hawker fashion PR, W37th St - 9th/10th Ave (issue 21)

Amir Korangy publisher The Real Deal, W37th St - 9th/10th Ave (issue 18)

“One of the units was an editing studio for Darren Aronofsky and Wes Anderson. So after I moved in, for almost two years, I was getting gifts and tickets from different agencies and brands and companies. “Then I got tickets for the Golden Globes for Darren Aronofsky for The Wrestler. I also got Wes Anderson’s People’s Choice Award for The Fantastic Mr Fox. They finally came to my office and said, ‘Can we have our award back?’”

On her neighbors: “The people in this building – some of them have been here since the 1970s. It’s ripe with characters. We’ve got somebody who was a porno illustrator, an Academy Awardwinning set designer, an Academy Awardwinning director, a lot of artists … then just some crazies.” Photograph: Eva Meuller

I can see all the way down to World Trade Center … I can look over the Times Square billboards and see where I work, see the Empire State Building. It’s unbelievable.” Photograph: Greg Salvatori

Harry Heissmann interior designer, W45th St - 9th/10th Ave (issue 39)

“I’ve got a bit of stuff. It’s not a considered plan. It’s an obsession. When I’m in one of my meetings, I can reach over and find a reference, in a book or a magazine, straight away. There is a sort of order. It is inspiring, because my work is all about the classic with the unexpected. “When clients come for the first time they say, ‘Where in the hell did you find all these things? And that’s exactly what I want, because this is not what you buy from Restoration Hardware or Ikea. I have those things too, but I’ve always enjoyed combining reasonable things with more pricey things.” Photographs: Robin Riley

LeeAnne Hayden, private equity director, W42nd St - 9th/10th Ave (issue 47)

“We’ve always loved being in the city, so when the last of the five children moved out, we said, ‘Why not now? I'm a cancer survivor and the one thing we realized was that life is too short to wait to do everything you want. So we sold the home, packed up, and made it happen.” Photograph: Phil O’Brien

Naty Michele digital content creator, W46th St - 9th/10th Ave (issue 45) “New York was always a goal of mine. I grew up so close to the city, but it’s very different to actually live here than it is to commute. I knew that living in NYC could help to create more opportunity for me both with work and my personal life. It’s something that I needed to try and do for myself. “I loved the white exposed brick in this apartment, because it adds so much texture and character to the space. The little alcove section is amazing because it provides a bit of privacy. It’s such a cosy space.”

Kori Frederick, TV producer/director, W47th St - 10th/11th Ave (issue 48)

“I honestly can’t believe I found this apartment in Hell’s Kitchen. I am so happy.I love the neighborhood. When I thought about moving, it gave me severe anxiety. Seriously. My life is here. “By day, I snooze and eat treats, but by night I’m a crime-fighting dog that seeks to rid Hell’s Kitchen of squirrels.”

a love letter to the neighborhood our publisher and editor are proud to call home, and to those who make it one of the most vibrant, colorful, REAL places left in NYC. Four years and 50 issues on, our neighbors have taken us to their hearts and we’ve come to represent, we hope, the

very best bits about being a New Yorker. We believe every one of you has a unique story to tell and, in doing so, is able to reach and deeply connect with others through it. It’s what makes this big, brash, beautiful city feel a little less lonely. Thank you for being part of the story so far …
