Director of Recreation & Community Services WAWM RCS Breaks Ground on new Recreation and Community Services Center. This past summer the WAWM RCS continued its work toward your new Recreation and Community Services Center by breaking ground in front of dozens of community members, WAWM School District representatives, RCS Department staffers, and City of West Allis dignitaries. Superintendent Dr. Marty Lexmond, stated, “We are very excited to begin construction on the new Recreation Center. This will be a wonderful new gathering place for our community and continue our commitment to community wellness and recreation.”According to School Board President, Stephanie Emons, “The new Recreation Center will be a focal point of community gathering, health and wellness. New friendships will be formed and new skills learned. We are ecstatic to begin construction on the new Center and cannot wait for the community to explore all there is to discover through the Recreation Department. “A new Recreation and Community Services Center has been a vision of the department for over 5 years. Through fiscal responsibility, increased revenue generation, and strategic planning the department has been able to fund the construction project with no increase to property taxes or program fees. By this time next year, you (our residents) will be able to register for classes, take a fitness class, bring your child or grandchild to preschool, take a walk on our indoor track, enjoy daytime activities in the gym, or host your next special event or meeting in our large multi-purpose room. Having met and engaged in meaningful conversations with many of the Center’s neighbors, we look forward to re-joining the neighborhood, and bringing new life and landscape to the area. We hope all residents in West Allis and West Milwaukee will take advantage of all that your WAWM RCS department has to offer. We hope the pages of the Activity Guide will do just that...guide you to opportunities to be active right here in your community!

Dance Program

Mitchell Elementary Dance classes help students develop coordination, range of motion and increased physical fitness through strength, flexibility and endurance. Additionally, social awareness develops as students dance together and begin to recognize themselves in relation to others. Self-discipline and self-confidence are developed as students learn technique and explore their own creativity. Creative Movement classes introduce young dancers (ages 4-6) to a structured environment where they learn the basics of dance and classroom etiquette which can be applied to any dance form. Basic dance steps are introduced, though the majority of the class is on a broader objective (balance, dynamics, musicality, etc.). Rhythm develops as the children explore movement and music through games and exercises. The young dancers will use pom pons, scarves and other props to help them stay engaged and learn the basic movements. If your child is going to perform in the recital at the end of the dance season, please be advised there is an additional costume fee. Costume fees range from approximately $30 - $40 per enrolled class.

Program Dates: October 17-March 7 -Thurs. Nights and Sat. Classes are 50 minutes in length.

FINE ARTS

FRIENDS OF

Suburban Concert Band Nathan Hale High School The Suburban Concert Band is a community band composed of both professional and amateur musicians from West Allis and the surrounding greater Milwaukee area. We rehearse at Nathan Hale High School on Thursday evenings from 7-8:30pm. The band performs four formal concerts throughout the year. In addition, both the Concert Band and the Swing Street Big Band are proud to represent the city of West Allis in local concerts and parades. We welcome high school, college and adult musicians of all ages and from all communities throughout southeastern Wisconsin. Haven’t played in awhile? There is no need to worry about an audition, just dust off that instrument and join us for a night of good music. Please visit our website at suburbanbands.com for our 2019 Fall and Winter concert schedule.

Suburban Singers Central High School Love to sing? Join the Suburban Singers for their 2019 fall semester! The Suburban Singers are an adult mixed choral group that performs 3-6 times per calendar year with formal concerts in December and May. The group is comprised of West Allis residents and non-residents alike. Directed by Patricia Eby, the Suburban Singers perform a wide variety of music, including classical and contemporary choral works, pop favorites, Broadway show tunes, standards and traditional folk tunes. Interested singers are welcome to meet the choir and learn more about our membership at open rehearsals on September 10th and 17th from 7-9pm at Central High School. The choir rehearses regularly on Tuesdays from 7-9pm at Central High School. All singers are welcome; tenors and basses, in particular, are needed for a balanced sound. Membership fees for the 2019-2020 season are $30 for the fall or $50 for the fall and winter. Email thesuburbansingers@gmail.com for additional information. Share your passion for singing with the Suburban Singers this fall!

West Allis Players The West Allis Players begin their 50th season with the comedy farce, “Murder is Bad, but Monday Can Kill You.” Harry's back! Harry Monday, that is -- that Sam Spade wannabe in the trench coat and gumshoes, is hot on his latest case. Does he know what he's doing? Is he over his head? Of course. Especially when he finds three characters murdered at the Restful Glen Psychiatric Annex. Only after he arrives does he find out that all the inmates have multiple personalities. And the three murder victims are all the same guy! Who killed Jeffrey Stadtlander? Was it the congressman who, in a crisis, becomes Edgar Allan Poe? Or maybe it was the schoolteacher who runs hot and cold? Even the mailman falls under suspicion. "Clues are falling like cigarettes in the boys' bathroom," he says as he soon finds himself committed—and not just to the case. This wise-cracking whodunit will have you guessing until the final red herring—or perhaps Harry's goose—is cooked. – Dramatic Publishing. All performances will be held at West Allis Central High School Auditorium. Additional information and tickets are available at westallisplayers.org or at the door! October 4, 5, 11, 12 October 13
