A special message from the Superintendent…
Greetings West Allis and West Milwaukee Residents, With the cold and snowy winter we had, what better reason does one need to take advantage of all the benefits and values of our school district recreation department programs. Summertime is just around the corner - longer daylight, warmer temperatures, and getting outdoors is just what we can all use to get us moving, learning, and having fun this summer with the Recreation and Community Services Department. Summer is the Recreation and Community Services Department favorite time of year. You will see by paging through the activity guide that they have filled the summer with your “favorites” as well as some “new arrivals.” They pride themselves on delivering quality, enriching and engaging opportunities for every district resident. Be sure to find your “favorite” this summer. I want to thank everyone from community members to local businesses for your on-going support of our school district and the Recreation and Community Services Department. We look forward to filling your summer with outstanding recreation programs. Kurt D. Wachholz Superintendent of Schools West Allis-West Milwaukee School District

Important Information - Please read before registering
wFOR SAFETY REASONS The Recreation Department reserves the right to move a child up or down a level. All children MUST be at least 4 years of age AND meet the height requirements of the specified pool in order to be able to sign up for lessons level one and above.
wHEIGHT REQUIREMENTS Nathan Hale pool is 38” deep in the shallow end. Please measure your child from CHIN TO TOES prior to registering. This requirement is so their mouth can be above the water while in class. In order to qualify for lessons a child must be 38” chin to toes to swim alone at Nathan Hale. Parent & Child classes are exempt from these requirements as they have a parent/guardian with them in the water. wPARENT & CHILD All Parent & Child participants MUST be potty trained in order to enroll. You may only sign up for one swim level at a time. The child must pass that level of swim before registering for the next level.
wCLASS LENGTH All lessons are 45 minutes long with a 5 minute free swim period at the end of class. Our swim instructors suggest the use of swim goggles for comfort in levels 3 through 6. If you have questions pertaining to level classifications or aquatics programs please call Cory Thompson, 604-4959. POOL REGULATIONS 1. Per state code, all swimmers must thoroughly rinse off in the shower before entering the pool. 2. Swim caps are required of all swimmers whose hair is long or controlled by hair spray or oil. Caps are sold at pool for $2.00. 3. Do not bring valuables to pool. The Recreation Department is not responsible for lost or stolen articles. 4. Any swimmer who has entered kindergarten must use their respective male/female locker room. 5. Strollers must be kept out of pool area for child’s safety. Please carry child or use child carrying device. 6. Use of cell phones and electronic devices is prohibited in locker rooms. Water and air temperature is regulated by the District’s Maintenance Department, not the Recreation Department. They make every attempt to maintain a pool temperature of 82 degrees.

Youth Enrichment
Parents, it’s that time. Your teen is at the age of asking when they can start driving. Why not enroll your teen in the Driver’s Education Classroom Theory, where they will gain the knowledge to be conscientious drivers. Students will learn the rules of the road, insurance policies, map reading, car maintenance and much more. Let us help prepare your child for the open road. Attendance at ALL class sessions are required for completion of the course. Instructor: Don Kucej Location: West Allis Central High School, Room 254
In partnership with United Driving School the West Allis-West Milwaukee Recreation Department is happy to offer for the first time, behind the wheel instruction. Driver’s education is very important to build a foundation for your young driver. But learning to drive does not have to be so serious that it ruins the enjoyment of learning. United Driving School incorporates games, outdoor activities, group activities and even has pizza/donut parties to keep your young driver engaged and excited to drive. Once your child has accomplished the 30 hours of classroom theory, United Driving School will then schedule behind the wheel instruction for your child and your child can complete their driving experience with the same instructor who taught the classroom theory. This is an important milestone for teens, and the experience should be memorable and not forgettable.

Nordic Walking
Nordic Walking uses two specially designed poles to work the upper body while walking. Like cross country skiing, the poles are used by the arms to match each step the person takes. Nordic Walking combines simplicity and accessibility of walking with simultaneous core and upper body conditioning similar to Nordic skiing. The result is a full-body walking workout that can burn significantly more calories without a change in perceived exertion or having to walk faster, due to the incorporation of many large core and other upper-body muscles which comprise more than 90% of the body’s total muscle mass and do work against resistance with each stride. In this class you will learn some of the history, techniques and proper form of Nordic Walking and then have the opportunity to put your knowledge to work with personal instruction. Come out and try Nordic Walking today! Poles will be provided for you to use. Tree Planting and Selection
It takes only a short time to plant a tree, but how it is done can have a lasting influence. Mistakes made when planting trees usually are impossible to correct later. Even if the species selected is well matched to the planting site, shortcutting the planting process can cause the tree to fail after a short time or to struggle for many years and never reach its full potential as a healthy, vigorous addition to the landscape. Professionals from Hoppe Tree Service will cover best times to plant, different types of nursery stock, preparing the planting hole, planting and after planting care. Different types of tress that are well suited for this region will also be covered. Location: Administration Center

In the United States approximately 12.5 million children and adolescents aged 2-19 years old are obese. Because roughly 60% of families in the West Allislis West Milwaukee School District live at or below the poverty level, many children cannot afford to participate in after school youth sports programs. Our sports programs help children gain fundamental skills and learn the importance of teamwork all while being physically active. Help us KEEP CHILDREN ACTIVE.
Just $25 can pay for one youth to participate in a Recreation Department youth sports program.
