A WARM WELCOME TO

NORTH SHIELDS Good afternoon and a warm welcome to our opponents Consett this Saturday. Those arriving from County Durham today will find a North Shields side in supreme form, no doubt still buzzing from a 3-0 win over South Shields. The build-up to the game last Tuesday was remarkable for a Northern League Cup game. Fans were streaming to the ground in droves, the beer was flowing (not always inside the ground!) and both sets of fans anticipated a cracking game of football.

Within two minutes, the home atmosphere was dampened by Gaz’s opener. By half-time, there was only one team winning and one set of fans singing. The final result could have been a little closer - Bannon put in another fantastic (not to mention brave) show in between the sticks, and the woodwork put in a star turn, denying the Mariners three times - but the Robins were clear and deserved winners, and the travelling contingent went back through the tunnel happy. The win takes Shields - us, not

them - to five wins on the trot. In four of those games, we’ve worked hard to keep clean sheets, and look sharp down the other end of the field. By contrast, today’s opposition aren’t in the best of form, though the Steelmen were successful on Tyneside just a few days ago, leaving West Allotment with a win in their back pocket. They have a number of top players - not least Michael Sweet, one of the League’s best young forwards, and former SAFC prospect Dan Madden - and will undoubtedly provide a stern test at the Daren Persson. However, as all of the players were saying prior to the South Shields game, we are confident in defeating anybody on our day. We’ve clicked in the last few games, and just at the right time. We’re now two games away from a League Cup final, and just one shy of a trip to St. James’ Park. It could yet be a successful season after all! Up the Robins. The Chairman’s computer is, I understand, still knackered. Normal service will resume once he gets it mended!

THE LATEST

CLUB NEWS

FROM COMMERCIAL MANAGER MARK SCOTT

THE LATEST FUNDRAISERS A charity walk in aid of Frankie Sherwood takes place on Easter Sunday (27th March). Frankie has featured in past programmes and was due to be a mascot at a game earlier in the season. His granddad Michael Laidler is a regular at Shields games and we’re happy to promote this worthy cause (see image for further details). The day prior I’ll be joining Mike Amos as we walk from Croft Park, home of Blyth Spartans, to The Daren Persson Stadium for the Ashington game kick off. This is in aid of his “Last Legs” challenge. We leave at 9.30am and we’ll be stopping for a beer en-route. We plan to go via Seaton Sluice, St Mary’s Lighthouse, Cullercoats and Tynemouth and into North Shields. Anyone can join us, don’t worry if you’re unable to raise any money but any donation is welcome. Anyone who raises (or contributes £25) or more and joins us on the walk will be admitted to the game free of charge.

DAVE THOMPSON STEPS DOWN North Shields Press Officer (and former Secretary) David Thompson has resigned from his role and his place on the committee. Dave will still be a regular at the games and retains the title of the clubs first Honorary Vice President for his 20+ years serving as a volunteer on the clubs committee. The committee, and supporters I’m sure, would like to extend their thanks to him for the key role he has played over the years. Programme Editor Craig Dobson is taking up the press role as well until the summer where we will be reviewing the situation. If any roles at the club come available in the summer we will be advertising them on the website and welcoming applications from supporters.

THERE AND BACK AGAIN THE HISTORY OF THE ROBINS North Shields Athletic was originally formed in 1896, and played initially in the South Shields & District league. They progressed through the Northern Combination, Northern Alliance and North Eastern League and became a major force in North East Football, outside the Football League, moving to play at Hawkey’s Lane around 1900. Preston Colliery F.C. emerged after the Great War, becoming North Shields A.F.C. in 1928. They enjoyed tremendous local support

with a record 12,800 watching the local derby with South Shields in 1936. Shields won the NE League title and numerous cups, but their moment of crowning glory came in 1969. After joining the Northern League, they won the FA Amateur Cup by beating Sutton United in front of 47,000 spectators at Wembley Stadium. Shields were a goal down after only four minutes but won with second half strikes from Richie Hall and Brian Joicey – both laid on by Orrick, a shipyard worker from Byker.

The club, which also won the Northern League title and Challenge Cup that same year, were declared joint holders of the European Amateur Cup the following season when two games against Italian side Almas resulted in a level aggregate score. In 1982, the Robins won 1-0 at Halifax Town in the FA Cup First Round, Bede McCaffrey scoring the all important goal that year. Walsall were the visitors to Appleby Park in the next round and left with a 3-0 victory. Having moved into the national

However, financial problems were afoot, due to mishandling of the club’s finances, and Appleby Park had to be sold to appease the administrators. With no home to call their own, and mounting debts preventing a groundshare with Whitley Bay, North Shields went bankrupt. However, they almost instantly reformed as a new club, thanks to the efforts of local businessmen and band members - Alan Hull and Ray Laidlaw joined the board, as did two North Tyneside councillors. The club, headed by new chairman Richard Slade, sought and gained immediate admission to the Second Division of the VAUX Wearside League. They were promoted to the top flight as runners-up in their first season, briefly reverting back to North Shields Athletic for four seasons. They enjoyed success in local cup competitions, too, the Shipowners Cup and NFA Senior Bowl added to that title in 1998/99 treble-winning season.

Once again known as North Shields from the 1999/2000 season onwards, the club began to kick on, league runners-up in 2000/01 and winners by eight points the following season. They also continued to collect silverware elsewhere, winning the Monkwearmouth Charity Cup in 2001 and again in 2003. After a fifteen year absence, the Robins gained promotion back into the Northern League in 2004 following their third Wearside League title and a further Shipowners Cup triumph. After ten years in Division Two, the club belatedly returned to the top tier. The Robins shattered records en route to the 2013/14 championship - but better was to come in national competition. The Robins swept past the likes of Phoenix Sports, Erith & Belvedere and Highworth Town to reach the FA Vase final at Wembley. In front of 10,000 fans, Shields went behind to Glossop North End, but a late equaliser by Gareth Bainbridge and Adam Forster’s extra-time finish clinched the coveted trophy for Graham Fenton’s men.

Harry Chambers A striker with over 135 Liverpool goals and 8 England caps to his name, Harry, a local lad from Willington Quay, began his career at North Shields Athletic. He joined the Reds from the Robins in 1915. Ron Tatum The commanding centre-half played for Shields for twelve long years, skippering the club to its greatest success - the FA Amateur Cup final win in 1969. Alan Driver Another member of the treblewinning side of ‘69, Alan served Shields with distinction, amassing 362 appearances (and 3 goals) at right-back for the club. Wilf Keilty One of Shields’ longest-serving players in the modern era, lively centre-mid Wilf played for the club in three separate decades, and also guided them to NL promotion as manager. Ian Donaldson A prolific goalscorer for Shields in the early eighties, Ian always knew where the goal was, and went on to score plenty more for Gateshead. Gareth Bainbridge Already a legend at the club within two seasons of joining, Gaz has bagged over a goal a game in a Shields shirt, clearing 100 goals in just 80 starts - and shows no signs of slowing down.

North Shields made it four wins in four games on Tuesday night, a battling performance and a Dean Holmes header enough to see off Sunderland RCA at Meadow Park. Saturday’s scheduled fixture at Dunston UTS was one of many games to fall foul of the wet weather, affording Shields a six-day gap between the 5-0 demolition of Jarrow Roofing and the midweek fixture in Ryhope. Despite netting a brace apiece last Wednesday, Gareth Bainbridge and Peter Glen-Ravenhill were both rested, with Dan Wilson favoured in attack and Ryan McGorrigan stationed on the right flank. Meadow Park has not always been a happy hunting ground for Shields, whose only victories there in the past decade have come in cup competitions. However, Shields looked like redressing the balance within moments of kick-off. A wayward backpass from Clayton Davis was seized upon by Dean Holmes, and the RCA captain was the most relieved man on the pitch when the winger lifted the one-on-one wide.

The home side looked keen to take advantage of that early reprieve, pinning Shields back with a number of high balls forward. One such play forced a rare errant touch from Curtis Coppen, affording Colin Larkin the opportunity to steal possession and make inroads into the box. The player-coach was denied by a fine save from Chris Bannon, rushing out to close the angle on the veteran. Larkin was a thorn in Shields’ side in the first fifteen minutes, and it was his cross from the right flank which almost facilitated the opener. Waiting towards the back post was Stephen Callen, whose close-range header looked destined for the net. Again, Bannon came to the Robins’ rescue with a remarkable stop, an outstretched hand palming the ball away before the defence crowded out Larkin’s attempt from the rebound. The visitors were yet to find their rhythm, a dangerous counter fizzling out with a tame header from Holmes. The hosts, meanwhile, struck the woodwork on 34 minutes, another Callen header clipping

the outside of the post, though Bannon and his defence had the latest effort covered.

either side, Michael McKeown and Callen both missing the target for their respective sides.

At the other end, RCA stopper Andy Hunter had little work to do. Indeed, Shields’ best chances of breaking the deadlock rested upon the decisions of the officials. The referee had already turned down one penalty claim by the time Dan Wilson went to ground twice in quick succession, Liam Hatch the offender on both occasions. The man in the middle waved away vociferous appeals, and was similarly unmoved when the same centre-half went through the back of Wilson in the area minutes later.

The stalemate was broken on the 69th minute, and it was Shields who would snatch a valuable lead. A Robins counter stetched RCA out of position down the right, and though the hosts briefly regained possession, good pressure from McKeown saw the ball surrendered to Jack Donnison. The full-back’s inch-perfect delivery found Wilson unmarked in the area, and although Hunter produced a superb parry to keep the forward out, Holmes was following up.

Regardless, Shields had Bannon to thank for keeping the scores level at half-time, and asserted themselves from the outset in a closely fought second half. The chances still weren’t flowing for

The wideman was Shields’ most direct force in attack all evening, and got the goal his performance deserved, nodding in from two yards. Sunderland RCA were expected to come back at Shields with an

onslaught in the final twenty minutes, but it was Graham Fenton’s men who continued to threaten. A last-ditch tackle from Davis prevented Wilson from striding into the area, while Ben Richardson scooped an effort clear of the crossbar. As the game entered its final throes, North Shields did an exemplary job of retaining possession, winding down the clock to the frustration of the opposition. Try as they might, the CA could not get beyond Hughes and Coppen in the heart of the visitors’ defence, failing to unduly trouble Bannon in the closing minutes. It might not have been as easy on the eye as their previous victories, but Shields showed the commitment and the confidence required to grind out a hardearned result against a difficult RCA outfit.

A bumper crowd of 1,349 packed into Mariners Park to see the Vase holders take on Division Two’s champions-elect, but the hosts were silenced within moments of kickoff. Michael McKeown’s bobbling cross should have been dealt with, first by Michael Turner and then by John Grey, but the ball found its way to Bainbridge towards the back post, the prolific number nine applying the finish from close range.

Ben Richardson went close with a curling free kick as the reds continued their bright start, keeping David Foley and Adam Sakr quiet while posing a threat on the break. Roared on throughout by their vocal travelling support, the away fans had plenty more to shout about when Marc Lancaster doubled North Shields’ lead on 15 minutes. Again, both forwards were involved, Wilson chipping the initial pass into the left channel for Dean Holmes, whose low ball across the box

was flicked by Bainbridge into Lancaster’s path. The full-back tucked away his first ever goal for the club from a matter of yards out, beating ‘keeper Gareth Young at his near post to put his side in full command early on. Bainbridge sliced a volley wide from within the area ten minutes later, but it was strike partner Wilson who would effectively kill off any hope of a comeback. Lancaster turned provider, his floated ball down the middle finding Wilson onside and in on goal. The 21-year-old expertly placed the ball far beyond the reach of Young, a just reward for his exemplary earlier work. Staring at a three goal deficit, the hosts belatedly registered their first attempts on goal, Foley dragging wide across goal and failing to beat Chris Bannon when one-onone, the ‘keeper rushing out to pull off a fine block. As expected, South Shields attacked with renewed vigour in the second half. Stephen Ramsey’s goalbound header was remarkably tipped onto the bar by Bannon, and a Turner header moments later came back into

play off the post, before Sakr curled the rebound inches over. A dubious offside call prevented Bainbridge from converting a fine McKeown through ball, but the Mariners would spurn further chances thereafter, sub Teasdale and former Robins full-back Grey failing to register shots on target. The Shields goal had led something of a charmed life since the restart, and the woodwork would once again come to the visitors’ rescue. Ramsey directed another header onto the frame of the goal, the ball coming back into play via the bar. The visitors scrambled to keep out the rebound, though ‘keeper Bannon suffered a suspected broken nose in the confusion. With twenty minutes left and little realistic chance of salvaging a result, South Shields faded, and the resilient Robins would threaten twice more, sub Ryan McGorrigan sliding a shot against the base of the post, before Young got fingertips to a rising shot from Lee Mason. Mariners top scorer Warren Byrne, almost pulled one back for the deflated hosts with a deflected free kick in stoppage time. It would have been scant consolation for the Division Two leaders, who simply could not contend with a dangerous, confident Robins outfit in the first half.

MARC LANCASTER

OFF THE MARC SHIELDS FULL-BACK MARC LANCASTER ON SCORING HIS FIRST EVER GOAL FOR THE CLUB, THE UPTURN IN FORM AND HIS TIME COACHING KIDS IN AMERICA. “When I go home, I’ll tell people it was twenty yards, but obviously it was just the two!” As a full-back, Marc Lancaster doesn’t get on the scoresheet often. In fact, the flame-haired defender hadn’t scored a single goal in two years at North Shields before the trip to Mariners Park. Marc grabbed the second en route to a 3-0 victory, and was full of praise for his teammates on a defining night for the club. “Everybody knows what South Shields have been doing with themselves this year, they’ve really come on the map,” he says. “We were really confident within ourselves, and putting in the performance like we did in the

first half, you cannot really ask for much more, I don’t think. We caught them quite cold, and credit to South Shields, they came at us and threw everything at us but we defended really well. We’ve got a strong unit, conceded one in the last six now, four clean sheets on the bounce. My bread and butter is keeping clean sheets. We’re really flying.” That hasn’t always been the case at the Daren Persson this year. “We didn’t have the confidence for whatever reason and it wasn’t gelling. Things weren’t going right at both ends,” Marc explains. The Robins have found their shooting boots in recent weeks, and the defender was full of praise for his attacking counterparts.

“To win games, you have to score goals, there’s no shying away from that. Gaz puts a lot of pressure on himself and he’s come back flying, it’s nice to see him getting goals. We need him to fly and we need his goals, he’s a massive part of the team. Dan Wilson’s come in this year and scored a few as well, and the likes of Dean Holmes and Peter Ravenhill are flair players, and really positive going forward.” The form in recent weeks is reminiscent of that which saw Shields lift the Vase at Wembley - a triumph that was down to close bonds and teamwork. “Last year, what a year! I came in around October, and would never have foreseen the club doing what it’s done, and I don’t think

15

It has also increased his appreciation of the coaching at Shields - “it’s up there with what I had when I had the opportunity to be at Hibernian”, he insists - but at 22, playing will remain his first consideration. “In the future, it’s a big possibility. I’m still only 22, so football is still a massive part of my life.”

“I MISSED MY FOOTBALL AND BEING AROUND THE LADS, THE COACHING, EVERYTHING ABOUT SHIELDS.” anybody did from the outside. From the inside, there was a real togetherness, which is why we could go on to do what we could do. It was a great year for everyone connected with the club.” After celebrating that famous Wembley win, Marc took the opportunity to travel stateside to Atlanta, coaching children of all ages at summer soccer camps. “My first week out there, I actually took a full hour session with a two year old carried around in my

16

arms, which I didn’t think would be happening! It was definitely an eyeopener.” This side of the water, the full-back also coaches Wallsend under-16s, and believes that it gives him a fresh perspective on the game. “You can sit and watch a game and think about things which then when you’re going into play, that’s how I would see it as a manager. You understand sometimes at halftime you get a bit of a rollicking off the manager!”

Marc missed everything about Shields, but when he returned, the season was well underway, and the left-back found himself vying with both John Grey and Jordan Summerly for that one starting berth. “It was a real push for myself. I understood I couldn’t just walk straight into the team when Johnny was here and Jordan was flying too. In the last few, I’ve got myself back in, which I’m really happy about. I can always improve, and we can always improve as a team. Having that little bit of backup and pressure on you somebody to come in if I don’t have a great game, it’s good for us, it really is.” That strength in depth alone wasn’t enough to carry Shields through to Wembley for a second successive year, events conspiring against them when Marc’s old club Morpeth Town travelled down to Tyneside, but that result has given the side added impetus. With the backing of the coaches, committee and supporters, all of whom are “a massive part of this club”, Marc is confident Shields can end the season on a high. “I think that (the Vase defeat) was a bit of a turning point, ironically enough. We had to go and do something now. Semi-final of the Senior Cup, we owe Morpeth one after putting us out of the Vase, and we’re really confident that we can get to St. James’. The League Cup is massive, too, and we still have our eye on fourth place within the team. Whether or not it’s achievable is down to us on the pitch.”

TEAM NEWS Aside from long-term absentees Adam Forster and Denver Morris, Shields may also lose Chris Bannon, who broke his nose against South Shields. Midfielder Gary Ormston remains suspended for two more games, but Lee Mason made a pleasing return from injury on Tuesday evening.

THE FORM DWWWWW North Shields head into the final months of the season brimming with confidence, with two cups still to play for and plenty of time to climb towards the higher reaches of the Division One table. The Robins have won their previous five games on the bounce against tough opposition, not least in their last two games. A narrow 1-0 victory at a compact Sunderland RCA was followed up with an emphatic 3-0 result at riverbank rivals South Shields, the game as good as won by the half-time whistle. With so many players reaching peak form, Graham Fenton will be confident of claiming some silverware this season - and, in the more immediate future, another three points today.

16

BEN GARETH RICHARDSON BAINBRIDGE ONE OF THE MOST DEADLY FORWARDS IN THE NORTHERN LEAGUE OVER THE PAST TWO SEASONS, GAZ HAS FOUND GOALS A LITTLE MORE DIFFICULT TO COME BY THIS CAMPAIGN, NOT HELPED BY AN EARLY INJURY AND AN UNHEALTHY DOSE OF MISFORTUNE. THE 30-YEAROLD IS BACK AMONGST THE GOALS, NOTCHING SIX TIMES IN SHIELDS’ LAST EIGHT GAMES.

BEN IS NOT ONLY ONE OF GRAHAM FENTON’S VASEWINNING MAINSTAYS, HE’S ALSO AMONGST THE MOST CONSISTENT PERFORMERS IN THE MIDDLE OF THE PARK. A HARDWORKING MIDFIELDER WITH A FIERCE RIGHT BOOT, RICTA HAS MADE MORE STARTS THAN ANY OF HIS TEAMMATES THIS SEASON, AND HAS SCORED FIVE TIMES - FOUR FROM DEAD BALL SCENARIOS.

After another inconsistent campaign, Consett look likely to once again finish around mid-table. The County Durham outfit have not finished higher than ninth since finishing as runners-up to Spennymoor in 2010/11, and are currently three points away from breaking into the top half. Consett have struggled somewhat in 2016, their only wins coming on the road at Ashington and against relegation battlers Whitley Bay and West Allotment. The Steelmen have lost six games in that time, most notably a heavy 6-2 defeat at Bishop Auckland’s Heritage Park.

STEPHEN LITTLE THE EX-KILLINGWORTH CENTRE-HALF MADE A NAME FOR HIMSELF AT WEST ALLOTMENT BEFORE HIS MOVE TO BEDLINGTON TERRIERS, EARNING PLAYER OF THE YEAR GONGS AT BOTH RESPECTIVE CLUBS. THE RESOLUTE DEFENDER WAS ONE OF THE FEW WHO STOOD OUT IN THE TERRIERS’ FIGHT AGAINST RELEGATION LAST TIME OUT, AND BRINGS COMPOSURE TO THE CONSETT BACK FOUR.

DANNY CRAGGS A LOCAL LAD, ‘CRAGGSY’ GIVES EVERYTHING ON THE PITCH, REGARDLESS OF WHERE HE IS DEPLOYED. A VASE WINNER WITH DUNSTON UTS, THE 31-YEAROLD REJOINED THE STEELMEN LAST YEAR, AND HAS ASSUMED THE ARMBAND IN DAN MADDEN’S ABSENCE. A LIVELY, TIRELESS PLAYER AT FULL-BACK OR IN MIDFIELD, THE STAND-IN CAPTAIN COULD PROVE A HANDFUL TODAY.

THEIR LAST MATCH 3-1 VICTORY

Consett registered their first win in four games on Wednesday night, coming from behind to defeat West Allotment Celtic at Whitley Park. David Henderson put the hosts ahead after ten minutes, but Consett were soon level courtesy of a fine strike from Jordan Lavery. Mark Eccles’ side pulled away from the hosts after the break. A Lavery corner was nodded in at the near post by Ryan McKinnon, before Callum Smith curled in a magnificent twenty-five yarder to make it three.

DID YOU KNOW? In 2006/07, Shields were knocked out of the Vase in the 1st Round, going down 4-1 at Consett. Eight years on, the Robins got their revenge, defeating the Steelmen by the same scoreline - and going on to win the Vase!

TODAY’S VISITORS

CONSETT

Consett’s football club was founded in 1899 as Consett Celtic. Their original ground was on land provided by the Iron Works, and went by the title of Vicarage Field. However, the club had to vacate the site in 1948 when the rapidlygrowing works needed the land for expansion, so for a couple of years they played at Eden Colliery Welfare’s ground at Leadgate, until a suitable permanent home could be found. The new ground was named Belle Vue Park, and was largely constructed by voluntary labour, which moved tremendous amounts of cinders from local mine workings to form banking around the pitch. Two small stands were built, one on either side of the pitch, from concrete, brick and timber. The fee of £1,150 that Charlton Athletic paid for Tommy Lumley (a NE League record at the time) paid for one of them. The opening game versus Sunderland Reserves in August 1950 attracted what is still the ground’s record gate of 7,000.

The club played local football until joining the Northern Alliance in 1919. Seven years later they switched to the North Eastern League, winning promotion from the Second Division at the first attempt. From 1935-37 Consett spent two further seasons in the Northern Alliance before returning to the semi-professional North Eastern League. There they stayed until its demise in 1958, winning it in 1939-40, and its League Cup in 1951 and 1954. After two seasons in the Midland League The Steelmen became founder members of the Northern Counties League in 1960, winning the title in 1962. They returned to the reformed North Eastern League in 1962, but it folded again two years later. Consett joined the Wearside League, finishing runners-up in 1969 and 1970. The Sunderland Shipowners’ Cup and Monkwearmouth Charity Cup were both won in 1968. Consett is situated 17 km south west of Newcastle upon Tyne and 19 km North West of Durham.

It was a community developed very much around the Consett Iron Works, an undertaking which was founded in 1837 and as this works expanded, so did the size of the community. There were other industries in Consett too, amongst the most prominent coalmining, light industry, farming and horticulture The 1950s was a boom period in the Steel Industry and the Consett Works expanded to such an extent that the population of the town soar to some 35,000 at this period. Until 1974 Consett was an urban district of County Durham and included in the district was Shotley Bridge, famous in the 18th Century for swordmaking by German cutlers; and Ebchester, on the site of a camp with an 11th century church built of Roman stone. The town was incorporated with Lanchester Rural District and Stanley Urban District to form Derwentside District under the Local Government of 1972. Consett have reached the 1st Round proper of the FA Cup twice. The first

The Steelmen ended their 63-year stay at the old Belle Vue, moving from their home since 1950 to a new ground on Delves Lane, which features a state-of-the-art 3G playing surface. Consett’s new home, aptly named Belle View Park, was opened by Peter Beardsley (left), who brought his NUFC U21s to County Durham for the occasion. The hosts lost 2-1, but drew a crowd of over 2,000 spectators.

was in 1958-59, when they lost 5-0 at Doncaster Rovers. The second, in 1996-97, began with a 2-0 replay victory over Alnwick Town, followed by a 1-0 win at Harrogate Town. Next came Durham City away, where The Steelmen earned a 1-1 draw. However, Durham had fielded an ineligible player and were expelled. Consett then beat Bishop Auckland away, with Colin McLeod getting the only goal. The reward was a trip to meet Gateshead, where another great performance and McLeod goal earned a 1-0 win. Consett were then drawn away to Mansfield Town in the 1st Round. Over 1,000 people followed the team to Mansfield, and though losing 4-0 the players responded to the marvellous support and gave their all.

cost them dear. The games in hand proved too much for a relativelysmall squad, and they had to settle for the runners-up spot behind Durham City.

In 1997-98 Consett won the Sunderland Shipowners’ Cup – normally only for Wearside League teams, but open to past winners for its centenary – by beating Jarrow Roofing 3-0 with goals from McLeod, Kelly and Suddes.

After a disappointing 2009/10 campaign, Consett bounced back to claim their third runnerup finish in four years, albeit ten points behind runaway winners Spennymoor Town. The Steelmen have not challenged for the championship title since, but they have since moved to the new, allweather Belle View Park in late 2013 (see above). Long-serving manager Lindoe departed in 2015 and Colin Myers followed suit one year later, midfielder Marc Eccles taking up the role on an interim basis.

2007-08 rivalled 1976-77 as the club’s best-ever season. They were among the front-runners for the title until the turn of the year. But their record run in the FA Vase, where they controversially exited at Merstham 5-4 after extra time,

Kenny Lindoe’s team came even closer thereafter, and twice came within seven minutes of lifting the Northern League title for the first time. A point from their last game at Whitley Bay would have made them champions, and they led 2-0 at half-time. But a second-half rally saw the Bay win 3-2 with a late winner. Three days later, Benfield travelled to Penrith needing a win to snatch the chanpionship from Consett’s grasp, and got it with seven minutes to go, leaving the Steelmen as runners-up for the second year in a row.

CHAIRMAN: FRANK BELL

PETER JEFFRIES GOALKEEPER

DAN HAWKINS MIDFIELD

Ex-Hartlepool FC stopper Peter is best known as Bishop Auckland’s former ‘keeper, winning plenty of personal accolades during his time at Heritage Park. The experienced goalie has also recently tended net for Spenny and Spartans.

The ex-Boro academy midfielder played for Bishop Auckland for four seasons before joining Blyth Spartans ahead of 2014/15. Dan is an accomplished player with bags of technical ability and a great eye for a pass.

JORDAN LAVERY DEFENCE

CALVIN SMITH MIDFIELD

20-year-old Jordan joined from Bishops in September, where he was a regular name on the teamsheet despite his young age. He made his Steelmen debut against West Allotment, showing an early aptitude for getting forward.

Signed from Spenny in 2012, Cal pulls the strings from midfield, and was Players’ Player of the Year in 2013-14. EX-SAFC academy, with spells at Durham City, Dunston UTS and Blyth Spartans. Extremely consistent and ever-present.

DAN MADDEN DEFENCE

MATTY SLOCOMBE MIDFIELD

A former SAFC academy prospect, Daniel played for Durham City prior to his move across County Durham. His attitude and organisational skills saw him claim the armband, leading the side from the back.

Last season’s Players’ Player of the Year, Matty has made 150 appearances for the club, playing at everywhere from right-back to left-wing. Most effective in central midfield, the 21-year-old is another extremely versatile player.

RYAN McKINNON DEFENCE

JORDAN NELLIS FORWARD

A tall, commanding centreback, 19-year-old Ryan was recently released from the NUFC academy, where he spent eight years honing his skills. Already a regular, Ryan wore the armband in just his 12th appearance for Consett.

A big, quick, strong striker who can play anywhere across the forward line, the 24-year-old was signed from Morpeth Town on 24 February this year, and has previously played for Bedlington Terriers and Alliance side Wallington.

JOE GRANT DEFENCE/MIDFIELD

LUKE SULLIVAN FORWARD

The 23-year-old was signed from Crook Town in October. Joe loves a tackle and will run all day in the middle of the park. He can also play at right-back, as he showed with a solid display in the home win over Shildon.

A Consett lad signed from Tow Law in 2012 and made his debut at right-back. Now clearly a forward, Luke has consistently netted for the Steelmen, and is a real fan favourite down at Belle View Park.

Marske United leapfrogged Guisborough Town into second place on Tuesday, but only a late Connor Hood strike clinched all three points against Jarrow Roofing. The deadlock was broken twenty minutes from time by United’s Austin Johnson, but Michael Mackay hit back for the Roofers three minutes later. It was down to Hood to grab the winner in the 84th minute, to the relief of the home support at the GER Stadium. Guisborough, meanwhile, saw their game at Durham City postponed due to foggy conditions.

GOOD WEEK

Newton Aycliffe also missed an opportunity to keep pace with the leaders, going down 2-1 at home to Ashington. Andy Bulford and Lee Scott both struck in quick succession for the Colliers in the second half, though Zak Boagey’s late goal set up a nervy grandstand finish at Moore Lane Park. Bishop Auckland climbed up to seventh with an impressive 2-0 win over Washington, Andy Johnson and Sam Orritt getting on the scoresheet for the Two Blues, while Sunderland RCA put four past Dunston UTS at Meadow Park, Colin Parkin twice converting from the spot. Down at the bottom, Bedlington Terriers grabbed a crucial 4-2 win at fellow strugglers Norton and Stockton Ancients. Twice the Ancients hauled Bedlington back to within a goal’s reach, but a late Jonathan Wright strike - his third of the evening - saw the visitors claim three precious points. An Alex Kempster double downed Newcastle Benfield, while West Allotment surrendered an early lead, losing 3-1 at home to Consett.

NEWTON AYCLIFFE

Andy Ferrell’s Terriers recorded a much-needed victory at Norton, and are now just one win away from escaping the bottom three.

On a midweek where both of the top teams secured results, Aycliffe slipped up at home to Steve Harmison’s Ashington.
