Dr. Smith notes these 7 reasons to consider this revolutionary new treatment.

Ninety-three percent of reviews on Realself.com reported they were delighted with the procedure. 3. The Results Are Immediate. Patients walk out the door with their wrinkles and folds smoothed away. “We practically had to pry the mirror out of the hands of two patients we had today,” Dr. Smith says. “They couldn’t believe what we had achieved with one injection session.”

4. Bellafill® Injections Are So Easy! All you need is one procedure and then you can get on with your day. Dr. Smith recommends that patients shouldn’t exercise vigorously the day of their procedure, to minimize the risk of bruising, but otherwise can carry on with their daily activities. Depending on the procedure, some patients experience temporary bruising and swelling, but that usually goes away in a few days. 5 Bellafill® Restores – It Doesn’t Augment Bellafill® is not Botox or a facelift that can make you look different. 6 Tips on Choosing The Right Real Estate Agency For You

Choosing the right agent to represent your interests is critically important when buying or selling residential or commercial property. “Consumers have a lot of options with more than two million active agents in the United States”, says Stewart Kelly of Waco’s Kelly, Realtors®. He offers these six criteria for choosing the agent who is right for you. 1. They Have Proven Themselves Over the Years Your real estate agent matters. The more experience they have, the better they know the market and the business of real estate. New agents come and go continually, with only the best surviving. When you work with someone who has proven themselves over time, you know you have a polished real estate professional on your side. They can help you find a property not yet on the market, a buyer seeking just what you’re selling or negotiate the best price and smooth the process. 2. They Provide Great Customer Service An agent that doesn’t pay close attention to your budget, priorities and needs will make shopping for a home or commercial property an inefficient and frustrating process. Make sure that you and the agent can communicate well and have developed a good rapport. Then consider how quickly they respond with the right answers to your questions. 3. They Demonstrate Their Expertise “Particularly if you are relocating to a new city or different part of town, it’s helpful to have someone who is familiar with local demographics, schools, shopping, entertainment and traffic patterns.” Kelly said. “You don’t want to move into a neighborhood and be unpleasantly surprised that it lacks amenities important to you.” Because real estate values are

constantly in flux, it’s also important to have someone who knows the market well enough to spot trends. A buyer’s market can convert to a seller’s market at any time, and vice versa. Good agents have a finger on the pulse of transactions at all times. They’ll alert you if your target area is heating up or in decline, and that knowledge is invaluable when you’re making or considering offers or haggling over price. 4. They Give Back to the Community Good real estate agents recognize how important strong communities are to their business – and their lives. The best are honored to give back to the communities in which they live and work. Is your real estate agent working for the health of your community? 5. They Uphold the National Association of Realtors® Code of Ethics

6. They Do It Right Kelly, Realtors® has been a member of Leading Real Estate Companies of the World® (LeadingRE) for over 15 years. LeadingRE is the largest network of individually selected independent brokers in the World. If you’re considering the sale or purchase of a home, the experienced, knowledgeable professionals at Kelly, Realtors® can help guide you through the process of finding the perfect place.

Celebrating 25 Years of Exceptional Results

Not every real estate agent has earned the right to call themselves a Realtor®. Realtors® are licensed members of the National Association of Realtors® who pledge to uphold the 13-point code of ethics that requires they put the interests of their clients first.

5 Interior DesignTricks To Transform Your Home

There’s certainly no place like home, but maybe your abode could benefit from a new look. We’re not talking about a major makeover here, but a few tips, tweaks and suggestions that will change the way you see your surroundings. Your family, friends and everyone who comes to visit will notice as well. “Below are several design tricks that are guaranteed to turn some heads” says Melissa Hoekstra, founder and owner of James & Reid Home l Antiquities, located in Woodway and featuring a wide array of distinguished antiques and relics imported from across the world. Melissa’s fresh approach to home design reflects a style shaped over two decades of creating living spaces for her clients and friends. The showroom offers furniture, bedding, accessories, gifts, jewelry and other fine items for the home, including furniture manufactured by LEE Industries, amongst other designer lines not otherwise offered in Central Texas. 1. Have a Seat Bistro chairs provide a great way to spice up your home. They’re sturdy and lightweight, and come in a variety of styles and colors. Even better, you’ll

6•PRESTIGE•AUGUST 2018

be able to put them to good use in just about any room in your house. 2. Blue Heaven Blue is in this year, and many designers and collectors are taking advantage of the situation by adding the color in bedrooms, living areas, kitchens, offices and elsewhere. Hoekstra mentions “Blue works well on a wide variety of surfaces, from large porcelain urns to bedding and even wall colors”.

3. Light It Up “Stylish lighting can transform a room,” says Hoekstra. Lighting can certainly make a difference in changing the way you and other people see your home. The options are virtually endless for every room in your house, from recessed in-ceiling lights to classic lanterns, innovative and unusual chandeliers, modern table lamps and wall sconces. 4. Pillow Talk Pillows are more than just a comfortable place to lay your head at night; they are among the most versatile aspects of designing a home, offering

a diversity of colors, textures, styles and shapes, and they can stand alone or be easily coupled with each piece of furniture in your home. “You might choose handpainted or brightly-colored Turkish silk pillows,” Hoekstra says. “Regardless of which pillows you decide on, they will create tremendous versatility.” 5. Picture This At the end of the day, you can’t go wrong by adorning your walls with art. Anything from landscapes to brilliantly-colored abstracts to photography will work, just as long as what you hang on your walls reflects your own personal taste. After all, it is your home. “Your home should be very personal. You should make it yours, love it and be proud of it,” says Hoekstra, who travels to France, Belgium and England, as well to as to High Point, North Carolina, and Atlanta several times a year in search of items for her clients.

Find Something For Everyone Every Day. Every Occasion.

It is sometimes a daunting task to purchase unique gifts that mean something special to the people you love. Going on the internet isn’t always an option when you prefer to see the item in person, hold it in your hands or perhaps you are simply in need of a last minute gift “on your way to the party”. Take pleasure in the experience that can only be found by shopping locally, says Saundra Rowntree, current owner of The Gift Horse, an independent boutique in Waco for the past 35 years. Rowntree offers these advantages to shopping locally for your oneof-a-kind, perfectly packaged treasures. 1. Independent Businesses Can Carry the Eclectic Assortment You Need An independent neighborhood boutique can carry a diverse range of products, from designer apparel to stylish and trendy handbags to locally sourced products. Franchises under pressure from distant corporate headquarters must typically reserve their best floor space for specific items. The Gift Horse carries something for everyone including health and beauty supplies, collectables

year round, such as Christopher Radko ornaments, Kitras Art handblown glass, the original Pomme-Pidou whimsical colorful Belgium inspired money boxes and a local retailor for Brighton jewelry, handbags and collectibles. 2. Small, Family-Owned Businesses Thrive on Great Customer Service When you shop locally, you are served by helpful and friendly staff who know you and want to take the time to cater to your needs. With family-owned businesses, you’re being served by the owner. No one is going to work harder to keep your business than them.

3. Small Businesses Are the Cornerstone of Their Communities Small businesses – particularly those run by generations of family members and close friends – are not going anywhere any time soon despite the onslaught of internet shopping. On the contrary, they are the ideal place to get the personalized service you deserve – they know their customers and make your personalized shopping experience easy and fun! 4. Local Boutiques Can Reflect the Flavor of Their Communities

A Waco Tradition for 35 years If you want something distinctively Texas, you can’t always get it by placing an order with a company based in California. You have to visit a local store. For example, if you’re looking for an aromatic, fine washing detergent, locals love Glamorous Wash, a product made in Texas by the Tyler Candle Company. Are you seeking simple, modest, but stylish clothing? Try Finley Shirts, a woman-owned, Texasbased designer, all available at The Gift Horse, where gift wrapping is always free! Ridgewood Shopping Center

5. Locally-Owned Boutiques are Great Places for Seasonal Items Whether it’s for holiday celebrations, baby showers, graduations, weddings or even everyday items, local neighborhood boutiques are convenient places to look around and find that special something that touches your heart.

Whether looking to find that perfect gift for a loved one or a well-deserved treat for yourself, visit The Gift Horse and let the Rowntree family give you a personalized shopping experience. “We strive to offer unique items not found elsewhere,” says Saundra Rowntree. “We believe and follow our core values of family, friendship, courtesy and respect, where everyone is welcome.” Call (254) 752-2105, or simply stop by during business hours; they are happy to assist.

6 Reasons to Get Yourself

A Personal Jeweler

When you go to the doctor, do you pick a different one each time or work with the same person who knows you and your needs? Why wouldn’t it be the same with buying and repairing jewelry, which is often a significant investment? Sissi Gholson of Gholson Originals Fine Jewelry in the Ridgewood Village Shopping Center, believes jewelry tells a story about us. That’s why it’s important for anyone who cares about their jewelry to establish a relationship with one person at one jewelry store to serve as their personal jeweler. Why? Gholson offers these six advantages of having a personal jeweler. 1. Talk To Your Jeweler When making a purchase as personal and important as jewelry, Gholson says you have to feel a sense of comfort and trust with the jeweler, and feel like they have your best interests in mind. She recommends talking to a jeweler and “going with your gut!” Gholson has served the Waco area since 1993, and the jewelers in her store take the time to know their customers and earn their trust. 2. You Have a Defined Style “There are so many styles: classic, traditional, trendy,

10•PRESTIGE•AUGUST 2018

modern, vintage, hip, boho, western … fun or fine,” Sissi Gholson shares. It’s important for the jeweler to understand your personality and fit the perfect piece of jewelry for you, but that’s only possible if you have an enduring relationship like the kind you would have with a personal jeweler. “We want them to love it!” she exclaims. 3. Friendship Over Business When you step into the jewelry store you call home, you receive one-on-one guidance every step of the way from someone who knows you and recognizes your jewelry

needs. Whether fitting you for a brand new piece or helping you find the perfect item for a family member, a good jeweler will know jewelry, but a great jeweler will know jewelry and you! 4. Consistently Superb Service Once you choose your personal jeweler, someone whose expertise you respect and whose work you trust, you don’t have to worry about whether you will receive excellent service the next time you walk in the door. You know who will be taking care of you every time.

5. They Can Put a Face to a Gem The luxury of having a personal jeweler is that you are able to establish a relationship with them and experience a friendship rather than just a sales pitch. Not only do they recognize you, but they recognize the jewelry you bring in - and maybe even the stories that go along with it! From the counter to the bench and right back into your own possession, your jewelry is treated with care. “We go to great lengths to make certain you feel like your jewelry is in better hands with us than with you. We treat every piece that comes in like it is our very own precious heirloom,” explains Sissi Gholson, who has owned Gholson Originals with her husband, Bob, since 1993.

6. Looking Out for You When You’re Not There A personal jeweler can spot jewelry they know you would love and alert you to it. Even jewelry stores with the best customer service can’t offer that if they don’t know the style and interests of individual customers.

Gholson Originals Fine Jewelry has had the honor of serving the Waco area for a quarter century. They strive to offer the best jewelry and service, and work to add to the story of each individual piece of jewelry, and bringing new life to sentimental pieces. Elegant Gardens Made Easy Greenlife Helps Waco’s Green Thumb Blossom

Your home is a peaceful, stylish sanctuary for you and your family, but why keep all of that style and comfort indoors? Cultivating a colorful and beautiful outdoor living space is one of the key ways to make a house a home and create happiness for your family. According to Greenlife Nursery and Landscaping owner Brett Boyd, “Our customers are very happy people who enjoy getting out and spending time at our nursery. It’s not a chore, like going to the grocery store!” Here are 5 reasons why reinvigorating your landscaping is a great investment: 1. It creates more living space. Your house is larger than you think, especially if you consider the outdoor area as part of your living space. Enhancing the outdoors is a wonderful way to create new spaces for entertaining and relaxing. In other words, instead of fretting over how your dinner party guests will fit inside your modest living room without bumping into each other, you’ll be able to escort everyone outdoors for a warm night under the stars.

12•PRESTIGE•AUGUST 2018

2. It’s great for the environment. Perhaps you’ve heard the disheartening news about endangered honey bees. Having a floral garden is one way to help save the bees and the environment, too. Flowers and vegetation naturally reduce air pollution and help remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, as well as provide a habitat for birds, insects and other important members of the ecosystem.

3. Keeping up a yard is wonderful therapy. Being a couch potato is bad for your mind and body. If you aren’t into intramural sports or running, working in the yard is great way to get the exercise your body desperately needs. And not only are gardening and working in the yard good ways to exercise, they’re also good for your mental health, too. Interacting with nature helps reduce stress and allows you to unplug from today’s screen-driven, multitasking world. Get gardening and start relaxing!

4. You’ll be inclined to save money at home. Are you on a tight budget or simply trying to cut back on the cost of dinners and drinks out on the town? Enhancing your outdoor living space is a wonderful way to spend less at expensive restaurants and pubs. Instead, you’ll want to invite friends and family over to your home to enjoy the gardens, landscaping and outdoor lifestyle with fresh lemonade or a bottle of wine.

5. Your home value is enhanced. Perhaps the most obvious reason to invest in your outdoor property is to enhance your home’s overall value. Whether you are looking to build equity or sell in the near future, curb appeal will make the whole of your property worth more than a house with a neglected landscape.

Greenlife Nursery and Landscaping has been providing for professional landscaping to the Waco and Central Texas community for over 33 years. If you need a landscaper or are interested in a free consultation, visit GreenLifeWaco.com or call (254) 776-2400.

The Hidden Dangers Lurking Behind Your Smile

Psychological research has proven that we are naturally drawn to people who smile. Smiles can lower blood pressure, act as stress relief, and improve your mood. A smile signals friendliness and happiness – generally the opposite of what we consider dangerous. But did you realize your bright smile could be hiding something dangerous to your health? “It’s estimated that 80% of US adults – even those with beautiful smiles – have some level of periodontitis, known as gum disease,” says Dr. Michael Thrasher of Hillcrest Dental Care, an active dental health advocate in the Waco/Central Texas area. Periodontal disease has been linked to serious systemic diseases including heart disease, stroke, diabetes, Alzheimer’s and certain cancers. Even erectile dysfunction, infertility and pre-term births have links back to oral health. Despite these serious issues, most American adults have gum disease and don’t even realize it. “We call gum disease a ‘silent’ disease because the symptoms are surprisingly mild for the damage it can cause,” Dr. Thrasher says. What Exactly is Periodontal Disease? Periodontal disease is an infection in the gums around your teeth. If it is not treated early, the disease progresses until it ends up destroying the bone around the roots of teeth, enduing in tooth loss. Gum disease, not tooth decay, is the leading cause of tooth loss in the United States.

14•PRESTIGE•AUGUST 2018

What Are the Signs I Should Look for? Some of the signs to look for including bleeding gums, swollen puffy gums, and maybe bad breath. Gum disease can be treated in early stages, but too often patients don’t realize the signs of gum disease because there isn’t any pain. Regular dental check-ups, including a periodontal probing, are a critical part of routine oral health care. Once you’ve lost teeth, particularly if you lose too many teeth, the options are limited to either the embarrassment and inconvenience of dentures, or even more expensive treatment to correct or restore the missing teeth. My Breath and Teeth are Fine! Wouldn’t My Primary Care Doctor Tell Me if I Had an Issue?

Right now, we are still learning so much about the oral systemic connection – the impact that the health of the mouth has on total body health. Medical and dental communities are starting to work together, but there is a long way to go. Generally your primary care doctor leaves your oral health up to your dentist, just another reason why regular dental visits are so important. What is Periodontal Treatment Like? “The latest technology in treating gum infection is lasers,” says Dr. Thrasher. I introduced this approach to the central Texas area about 10 years ago. Treating gum infection with a procedure called LANAP, which is laser gum surgery, is probably the most exciting thing that we’re doing right now because 80% of the population has some form of gum

infection. Two out of three of those have some gum infection so severe that they’re losing the bone around the roots of their teeth.” “The beautiful thing is we can treat that with a specific laser, the Periolase MVP-7, and we don’t have to do what we call, ‘cut and sew,’ so no more stitches. It’s much more patient-friendly, more comfortable for the patient, a better post-operative experience and we’re getting great results. It’s even gotten, now, to the point where we’re regenerating bone with the Periolase, the only FDAcleared laser for gum surgery that is backed with scientific research. If I had to pick one thing in dentistry that’s really changed my practice, the laser is the one.”

Laser Gum Treatment

But I’m Scared of the Dentist! Today’s dentistry doesn’t have to hurt. Hillcrest Dental Care is known for truly comfortable dentistry. Their experts in sedation dentistry use advanced technology and minimally invasive treatment approaches like the LANAP protocol that has shorter healing times. They have created an environment that will make you love coming to the dentist regardless of your past experiences. Among their services, they can: • Eliminate any dental pain you’re experiencing, including jaw pain • Prevent potential dental issues from harming your smile • Save and protect any of your damaged natural teeth or gums • Provide you with brand-new teeth, sometimes in one day • Beautify your smile

Mighty Machines

4 Hammer Tips to Buy the Best Equipment for Your Outdoor Needs There’s little doubt that machines can make almost any aspect of life easier. That can be especially true with outdoor work such as farming, lawn and garden care. The perfect tractor and other equipment can be a godsend whether it be for hobby farming, ranching or routine lawn care. But the number of options can be intimidating. Here are four Hammer tips on buying the best tractor or mower for your outdoor needs from Coy Hammer, manager at Pineco Tractor and Equipment of Kerens and Waco, Texas. 1. Consider Your Project and the Desired Outcome Everyone will have a slightly different need. Whether you’re installing fish ponds, gardening, moving gravel or ranching, the activity will determine the type of tractor you need. “One person may have just a few acres and just need to do some mowing or a little bit of gravel and rock work around their house and small projects,” says Hammer. “Then, you’ll have a guy with 40 or 50 acres who’s running cattle on his property, and he needs to lift a two-thousand-pound round bale so he can put out feed for his animals.” A 20- to 30-horsepower

16•PRESTIGE•AUGUST 2018

tractor would probably be sufficient for a small garden area, whereas the larger job would call for anything upwards of a 40-horsepower piece of equipment, he says. 2. Determine a Size that is Comfortable for You Keep in mind that no one complains when they buy a tractor that’s too big. You’ll do more with a tractor than what you planned to do. Weight, Hammer says, should be a major consideration. “If you have a 50-horsepower tractor that doesn’t weigh 2,000 pounds, you can’t do more than 2,000 pounds of work. But, on the flip side, if you have a tractor that weighs

6,000 pounds, you can do 6,000 pounds of work with the same horsepower,” he says, noting that the Mahindra tractors he sells typically have more operating weight than John Deere, and Kubuto products, and usually cost less. 3. Customer Service and Warranty You’ll put a tractor through a variety of chores, some of which are highly demanding on the equipment. In order to keep your cost of repairs down, and have a sense of comfort, you want to purchase a tractor with a warranty. Mahindra tractors come with a 7-year, 3,000-hour limited power train warranty and a

2-year, 3,000-hour Aggregate warranty, which is the best in the industry. This gives you the confidence to tackle even the most difficult tasks! Pineco makes it a point to give you the information you may need. “I’ve gained customers simply by answering questions on different components when other companies wouldn’t even help them,” says Hammer. “Pineco has always operated under Biblical principles. It’s how we were raised and it’s how we want to do business.” 4. The Dealership Matters You’re going to have this tractor for years, so find someone reputable who will help you for the next 15 to 20 years. Look for someone who knows what they’re doing and will treat you right.

With two locations – 6186 South IH-35 in Waco and 11104 E. State Highway 31 in Kerens – Pineco Tractor and Equipment’s large inventory includes Mahindra Tractors, Bad Boy Mowers and Big Tex Trailers. Pineco’s staff at this family business works to get you into the right high-quality, long-lasting equipment for your needs. Their parts and service center will provide you service and maintenance to ensure you get the most from your equipment. Simple Style Made Easy 4 Must-Have Looks for a Stylish Fall

Though it definitely still feels like summer, autumn will be here before you know it – so it’s a good time to start thinking about fall fashion. Some of the hottest upcoming trends are inspired by classic fall looks (think lots of plaid shirts) but others will be more surprising, says Kristy Hill, owner of Hinge Boutique in Waco. Hill established Hinge back in 2015, but opened her first independent brick-andmortar location earlier this year, selling hip clothing brands such as KUT from the Kloth, BED | STU, and Z Supply along with accessories and home décor. “I try to carry stuff that’s unique to the area,” Hill says. “I do carry a curvy line, a junior’s line – I try to carry a little bit for everybody, basically where mothers and daughters can come in together and shop in the same store.” And of course, Hill always tries to stay ahead of the curve and carry the hottest trends. Here are four must-have looks you’ll need for a stylish fall. 1. Classic Checks and Plaids This is a style Hill is always excited to see come back into fashion, and it works for both men and women. This year, she suggests mixing checks and

18•PRESTIGE•AUGUST 2018

plaids with leather or tweed to update a classic fall look. 2. Spring Has Sprung Again: Florals and Pastels Think florals prints and soft pastel colors only work around Easter time? Think again. This year, they’ll be a hit around Halloween time, too. “Pastels, believe it or not, will be huge in the fall, as well as stuff like lemon yellow, pastel blues, powder blues,” Hill says. “Things you’d normally think would be a faux pas in fall are going to be making their appearance.” Fall will also be a great time to rock springy florals. “Bringing spring into the fall

seems like the theme for 2018,” Hill says. “The brighter the better.” 3. Retro 80s Cowboy If you’ve secretly been pining away for the looks of the 80s, you’re in luck, because the “80s cowboy” look will be a major trend this fall. Think retro prairie dresses (both short and long), button-up shirts and fringe. “That cowboy look, that seems to be huge on the runway this year,” Hill says. 4. All Cactus Everything To complement your retro cowboy look, you’ll need some cacti! This is one trend

that’s already in full swing: Hinge currently sells everything from cactus tote bags to shirts to salt and pepper shakers. But Hill says it will still be trendy in the fall and will go along with the retro cowboy look. While Hinge carries tons of women’s clothing, they also carry items for men, including hats, boxers, socks and beard balms. 8 Ways Nutone Valet

Dry Cleaning

Will Simplify Your Life If you care about your wardrobe but are too busy to go to the cleaners, Raymond Farrell has good news for you. Farrell is the owner of Nutone Cleaners, a full-service dry cleaner with five locations in and around Waco. He says there is a simple way to avoid the hassle. Nutone valet offers free pickup and delivery service. With a phone or computer, anyone can arrange to have their garments picked up, cleaned and delivered without ever trekking to the dry cleaner. Consider the eight ways valet cleaning can benefit you. 1. One Less Chore - Waco’s Finest Cleaners At Your Door Scheduling pickup and delivery saves you having to spend money on gas and wear-and-tear on your car with multiple trips to the dry cleaner. That’s a direct monetary savings to you. Your time is valuable, too. Valet dry cleaning saves you time twice a week. 2. Why Go To The Cleaners When They Can Come To You How much would you pay for the convenience of valet service? The good news is, pickup and delivery are absolutely free.

3. Special Orders Are No Problem When you arrange valet cleaning with Nutone, you can include special instructions Want extra starch in the shirt, no crease in the pants, or a special stain removal? That’s what you get. Prefer pickup from your back door? No problem. It’s easy to arrange, by phone or online. 4. Keep Track of Your Clothes Nutone provides you with the garment bag and then alerts you when your dry cleaning is done. When you get home, there is that garment bag, announcing that your dry cleaner took that one chore off your list.

“Nobody enjoys the chore of going to the cleaners to drop off clothes and then return to pick them up,” says Farrell. “So we take care of that for you.” 5. Nutone Has An App for That! As if it could get any easier, Nutone is developing an app that will allow you to arrange for pickup, delivery and track your clothing through the entire process. 6. Expert Full-Service Dry Cleaning Do you need leather or suede cleaned? A wedding dress? Linens and draperies alterations? Not every cleaner can handle those items,

or they send them out to a second party outfit. Nutone has the expertise to handle all your cleaning needs. That’s because the company has been in business for more than 50 years and has more than 500 years of combined staff experience, according to Farrell. 7. Great Customer Service Every Time Nutone has a 4.9 out of 5.0 rating at ReviewMyDryCleaner.com. That’s with more than 400 reviews. “I love the friendly yet professional staff at Nutone in addition to my clothes always looking great!” says one recent review. “I have been a customer since the 1980’s and have never been disappointed in their service or quality.” 8. Save Your Marriage! “A customer once told me, ‘You saved my marriage. My husband and I no longer argue about picking up the cleaning,’” Farrell laughs.

Save your marriage, or just time and money, by arranging for free pickup and delivery of your cleaning. Visit one of the five convenient Nutone Cleaners locations: two in Waco and one in Hewitt, Woodway and Robinson; call them at (254) 7727137; or visit them online at NutoneCleaners.com. Why Continuum of Care

Helps Seniors

Get the Care They Need, When They Need It The transition can be jarring as the elderly enter different phases of the aging process, but that doesn’t have to be the case. At Lutheran Sunset Ministries, residents have a nearly seamless range of residential options as their medical needs change. Sunset Companion Services provides in-home, non-medical assistance for persons aged 62 and above who need assistance to remain living at home. That includes light housekeeping and help with grooming, cooking, shopping and other routine needs. Another option is to move to the ministries’ 32-acre campus overlooking the Bosque River Valley in Clifton, Texas. Independent living is available in the Rainbow Retirement Community, which consists of 54 apartments ranging in size from 520 square feet to 1,230 square feet. Services include housekeeping; security; transportation to shopping and medical appointments; cultural and social activities; an arts center; and a games parlor with piano. Twenty-three units are available in College Hill Assisted Living apartments ranging up to 733 square feet. Residents take advantage of personalized service plans according to need, as well

as nursing care, laundry service, three daily meals in a dining area and medication assistance. There’s also a 32-bed Sales Family Hope Center that specializes in Alzheimer’s disease and other memory support; a 128-bed nursing home that accepts private pay, Medicare, Medicaid and longterm care insurance policies; and Hospice Sunset, which provides end-of-life services to people within 25 miles of Clifton. “As people move from program to program, not only does the staff work together to make sure the transition is smooth, they are usually still on the campus, so they can

still stay connected to their friends and the people they knew and hung out with,” says Andrea Hikel, the 64-yearold nonprofit organization’s Independent Living Manager. “The other nice thing is that if there are couples whose needs are different, they still have that bond and don’t have to be completely separated. They can see each other every day.” Lutheran Sunset Ministries has a four-part philosophy for elder care that it calls Masterpiece Living. The components are: • Social, • Intellectual, • Physical, and • Spiritual. The ministries offers

residents a vibrant social life with communal activities, such as visits to the arts center adjacent to the campus. Educational activities are available for intellectual stimulation such as the Lunch and Learn speaker series. Active seniors have plenty of opportunities to walk around in a setting filled with Hill Country natural beauty, including a park-like picnic area with pergola and putting green. And spiritual needs are met by a campus chaplain who holds services twice a week and provides personal counseling on request. The chapel is also available for off-campus pastors to minister to residents from other denominations. The spiritual component is especially important for hospice patients. “A lot of people view hospice as giving up,” Hikel says. “But actually, it’s just making the most of the time they have left.”

4 Smart, Invisible and Automated

Home Upgrades

For Easier, Safer Living When people hear about smart homes, many think of something futuristic and complicated. But in reality, a smart home should make your life so much less complicated. “What we do is incorporate all your electronics inside your home or business and we simplify them into one integrated solution – so that’s one remote, or for a lot of people, one app,” says Jeff Stubbs, owner of Custom Integrators, which installs smart home automation and control throughout central Texas. They work closely with clients to make sure every smart home is customized for individual needs. “We determine all this: what’s your routine, what’s a day in your life, what you want to accomplish,” Stubbs says. “Every one of our systems is different and designed around particular customers’ needs, wants and desires.” Here are four smart home upgrades that will make your life so much easier. 1. The Home Entertainment System You’ve Always Wanted You’ll never need to go to a movie theater again when you have a home theater with surround sound. But it doesn’t have to be limited to just one room – you can get multi-room video and whole-home audio so you can seamlessly watch TV or listen to music throughout the entire house.

And the beauty of it all? All the hardware will be hidden behind the scenes. “You’re not going to see wires and boxes hanging from the TV. It all goes behind walls, so when you watch TV, all you see is the display,” Stubbs says. “We also have invisible speakers formed into the walls or ceiling so you never see them, but they have great sound quality.” 2. Energy-Efficient Smart Lighting Too many switches and controls all over the place is known as “wall acne.” Instead, you could control all your lights with one app. Plus, smart lighting turns on and off as you

need it, which will bring down your energy bill. 3. Stay Cool (and Safe) With Automated Shades “Imagine having shades in your house you never have to touch, because at dark they’ll go down, and when the sun starts to rise, they’ll come up,” Stubbs says. These go hand in hand with energy-efficient lighting because they go up and down based on energy controls and what you’d like to accomplish. They also help with home security, because you can have them go down when you’re not there, or at night when you are.

4. Make Your House Look Lived In – Even When You’re Away “The other thing about smart homes that’s really cool is they learn your routine,” Stubbs says. This is a big part of home safety and security because your home will appear totally lived in. “You can hit the vacation button on your way out and then be gone for a few days or a few weeks,” Stubbs says, “and your house will act as if you’re living in it, turning on lights and TVs to give the appearance that everything’s normal.” Custom Integrators installs Control 4, the leading automated control solution, for many of these upgrades. Stubbs actually used Control 4 in his home before eventually starting his own company because he “fell in love with the integration and simplicity of it all.” “It’s not about the bells and whistles,” Stubbs says. “It’s about simplifying and making your life easier.”

Established in 2009, Custom Integrators is a family-owned business specializing in the design, sale and integration of entertainment, smart lighting, automated shades and more throughout central Texas. For more information, visit MyCustomIntegrators.com or call (254) 235-4116.
