Supporting Your Neighbors: Local Shopping Challenge

L

et’s cut to the chase. By now you’ve heard the statistics. Almost $75 of every $100 you spend locally stays in your community. Local businesses employ millions of people across the country.

Local entrepreneurs spend exponentially more money on community programs their their larger counterparts. All impressive, indeed. So then why are millions of Americans driving away or logging on to their computers for their Christmas shopping this holiday season? Some cite convenience or busy schedules without realizing just how much impact they can have on their local community by spending a few dollars locally. Buy Every Other Product Locally Breaking the habit can be tough, so start small. Challenge yourself to buy one locally sold product for every other gift you purchase. And try to make the prices comparable so about half of your total holiday budget is spent locally. Encourage your friends to do the same and you could be making a monumental difference in your community. If 10 of you spend $300 on local gifts this year, about $2,250 of that $3,000 would be pumped right back into

your local community. Comparably, your community will see $0 of your online spending at retail giants. Buy All Gifts Cards Locally Gift cards are becoming an increasingly massive portion of holiday spending. More than 80 percent of holiday shoppers will buy at least one. More than $28 billion will be shelled out on gift cards this year, according to the National Retail Federation. Many people will spend their gift cards on food or everyday items if you buy them for traditional retailers. Don’t you want your present to be more meaningful? A gift card to a local specialty shop or boutique will ensue that your gift card is spent on exactly what it is intended to – a gift. Try to personalize each gift card by choosing a local business that has special meaning to the recipient, or maybe one that you have shopped at before with that person. © FOTOLIA

Last Minute:

Great for Procrastinators

E

ver get to the morning of Dec. 23 empty-handed? No gifts for your friends and family members and less than 48 hours to cross them off your list? Instead of paying an exorbitant price to have your gifts shipped overnight, consider taking a stroll down to your friendly local establishment for some at-the-buzzer shopping. Find Friendly Service Small-business owners are ready to welcome you with open arms and help you through the challenge of finding that perfect gift under not-so-perfect time constraints. Even in the hustle and bustle of the holiday season, you are likely to find friendly service on your local business scene. If you have a positive experience, then owners know they increase their chances of you returning as a customer throughout the year or for next Christmas. Additionally, they depend on your referrals to friends and family members to help grow their business. Find Better Deals Some local retailers will offer marked-down items as Christmas

approaches, especially holiday-related decorations or foods they will be unlikely to sell afterward. Check the discount walls to add a little thriftiness to your shopping strategy. Many local shops also offer loyalty programs for both long-time and firsttime customers. Ask if there are any such opportunities, and you may walk out of the store with both time and a few dollars to spare. A Better Shopping Experience If you haven’t experienced the holiday shopping rush at a large retailer, then consider yourself lucky. Crowded aisles and long lines are just a couple of guaranteed sights during the waning days of the shopping season. Procrastinators are better off opting for the local shopping experience instead. Because while busy, local shops will be exponentially less crowded than their larger counterparts. This will allow you to leisurely shop for the last few remaining items on your wish list without the hassle.

Waco ENT Gives the Gift of Hearing this Christmas By Mary Drennon Special to the Trib

C

hristmas is an exciting time of year, especially with all the parties, gifts and family gatherings. But for those who have a problem with their hearing, it can be a painful time of year. Hearing is one of our most important primary senses, and without it, the world narrows considerably. “The holiday season, in particular, can be especially difficult for those with a hearing problem,” said Jill Clark, practice administrator with Waco Ear, Nose & Throat (Waco ENT) and the Physicians Hearing Center. “We see people disconnect and wanting to pull away.” Holiday parties, family gatherings, and background noise can bring confusion and pain for those with diminished hearing, Clark added. That’s why the physicians and staff of the Waco Ear, Nose and Throat and the Physicians Hearing Center are especially pleased and honored to announce that in the spirit of Christmas, they will give away two sets of hearing aids, valued at approximately $6,600 per set. This is the third straight year in a row that Waco ENT and the Physicians Hearing Center is giving back to the community by providing two sets of state-of-the-art hearing aids to those whose lives would be changed for the better with a hearing device.

“What we want to do is help two people who are in need of reconnecting with their world during the holiday season,” Clark said. Entering is simple, and you can nominate yourself or someone else you know who would benefit from having a hearing aid. Participants must be 18 or older and submit a simple letter of up to 300 words explaining why they or someone they know would benefit from a hearing device. Two winners will be selected based on their compelling story, financial need and degree of hearing loss. To submit the letter, address it to Gift of Hearing and mail it to Waco ENT and Physicians Hearing Center, 601 W. Highway 6, Suite 106, 76710. Or, drop it by in person and place it in the special box. You also can email it to gift@wacoent.com. Letters will be accepted through Friday, January 9, 2015, and the winners announced on Friday, January 16, on the company’s Facebook page (www.facebook.com/Wacoent1) and

website (wacoent.com); the winners also will be contacted personally. “Our doctors are passionate about giving back to our community,” said Clark. “We receive more and more letters each year.” It’s not the only way Waco ENT and Physicians Hearing Center gives back, either. Once a month, the physicians offer a free hearing clinic at the Family Health Center’s 18th Street location, as they have been doing every month for a decade now. And, since Waco ENT has been providing health care services in Central Texas since 1946, you know you’ll be in good hands. What sets it apart from others is that Waco ENT has a medical office with not one,

but three otolaryngologists and four audiologists. In addition to top-notch service, Waco ENT also provides crucial follow-up hearing health care services often lacking from other hearing device providers. “Our medical doctors and our audiologists work hand and hand to ensure they are taking care of our patients’ needs” Clark said. “It’s something we are really passionate about, and it’s a great opportunity. There’s not much in this world that’s free, but in this case, all you have to do is send a letter.” Send a letter and get the gift of hearing — what could be more special?

e all know them. We may even be one. Shopping for some people is just plain difficult. They either have one of everything or don’t seem to want anything in particular. “I already have everything I need” or “Don’t feel like you need to get me anything” are common responses from them. The simple solution to pleasing these friends and family members is to find a gift card to one of their favorite local stores. But if you’re looking for a more unique approach for that hard-toplease recipient, you should be able to find a special gift downtown. Get Them Lessons Many local businesses, including art galleries, music shops and woodworking studios, offer year-round lessons to help community members hone their skills. A lessons package to such an establishment is a unique and thoughtful idea for a Christmas gift that keeps on giving. Not only will your recipient gain professional-level instruction, but he or she may be able to rediscover a hobby they haven’t had time for lately. Dance, cooking or art classes could be a romantic idea for your special someone.

Event Experiences Tickets to a concert, sporting event or movie offer a once-in-a-lifetime experience that will live on forever. Maybe your wife’s favorite band is coming to your area next year. Order the tickets early to make sure they are here for Christmas and have them waiting under the tree. You could also pre-order tickets for the big upcoming movie sequel or a touring Broadway show coming to the major city closest to you. Even the people most difficult to buy for on your list will be surprised and excited by the chance to experience a live show. Handyman (and Woman) Gifts What if you could find a gift that will provide years of enjoyment, as well as a fixed sink or door? Doublewin, right? Well, browse the aisles of your local hardware store and you will be in luck. Quality-built tool kits or do-ityourself woodworking sets will have your handy friend or family member ready for the fixer-upper season. Practical gifts like snow blowers, scarves or waterproof boots could be put to great use while they anxiously wait for spring to come around.

O

ne of the main disadvantages small businesses have when advertising their services is a limited marketing budget. Instead of spending millions of dollars on television, radio and print ads, local businesses may be able to allocate only a few thousand dollars to getting their name into the public view. But with the advent of social media marketing and digital strategies, you can help spread the word on local businesses this holiday season – without spending a dollar. Local shops depend on grassrootstype advertising for much of their promotional strategies. Spending huge amounts on marketing isn’t possible for many mom-and-pop retailers simply because of their small size. Do your part this holiday season by serving as an advocate for your favorite local businesses.

Join the Movement The holidays are a great time to give back to your small-business community not only by shopping, but by jumping onto their mission. Community-focused organizations such as Independent We Stand or the Small Business Administration are continually seeking volunteers to help get the word out on their efforts.

The Independent We Stand website (IndependentWeStand.org) features an option to recommend a local business for promotion within its program. This is a great way to support your favorite local shop while giving it a little extra attention. Social Media Social media sites such as Facebook and Twitter offer the perfect forum to speak your mind on the importance of shopping locally. Use your platform to send out educational statistics or ideas for great local gifts. Your hundreds of friends and followers will be a collection of mean, lean local shopping machines by the time the holidays come around. Even indirect messaging can work wonders on promoting local businesses. Use Facebook’s Check-In feature to let your legion of loyalists know exactly when you’re perusing the aisles of your favorite local establishment. You can also post photos of your recent purchases with information on where you purchased it, what you spent and how much you love it. Seeing a certain item may trigger a gift idea, producing more business for local owners.

Charities:

Don’t Forget Non-Profits

S

ome local organizations are focused not on selling products, but on improving the lives of disadvantaged community members. Non-profit groups, soup kitchens and children advocacy organizations are all seeking help this holiday season. And what they’re asking for is simply a hand. They need more manpower to achieve their goals and spread the word on their efforts. Lending Your Skill Set Can you spare a few hours every weekend in December? You may be asked to run errands or visit with people. Maybe deliver food or products to clients across town. Professionals in the creative services field can offer their skills free of charge as a holiday contribution. Developing a website, creating brochures or writing a mission statement for free can help your local group promote its missions. An accounting firm could offer to waive their preparation fees for the organization’s upcoming tax needs. A local radio station could provide a free advertising spot to a non-profit. Locals helping locals will strengthen the community this holiday season. Food Donations Why not spend your Christmas spreading some holiday cheer –

and delicious food? You can spend Christmas Eve cooking your favorite dish or baking some special cookies, then bring them to your local shelter on Christmas morning. Your gesture will surely be appreciated by the hungry, as well as by the shelter staff. And it is a simple act of kindness that can be turned into a tradition, passed on to children or replicated by your friends and family members. Charitable Contributions You may find yourself short on time this holiday season, but maybe you have a few dollars to donate to a local organization. Your contribution could go a long way toward furthering the cause of a group near and dear to your heart. You can conveniently make online donations or in-person cash contributions. Either way, donating funds is a simple way to show your support while making a difference in the lives of those who need it.

All Year Long:

Not Just for the Holidays

S

ure, Christmas is a great time to shower your loved ones with locally bought gifts. But what about the other major holidays throughout the year? Extend your yuletide joy to Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, birthdays and anniversaries for maximum impact on your local community and business owners. Your effort in doing so may make more of a difference than you realize. A recent collaborative study by the Small Business Administration, United States Department of Labor and other major organizations found that small businesses employ about 77 million Americans and account for 65 percent of all new jobs over the past 17 years. So by spending your money locally, you are helping keep your friends and neighbors employed during the holiday season and beyond! Here are some of the other notable findings from the study: • Eighty-nine percent of consumers agree that independent businesses contribute positively to local economies. • Residential neighborhoods served by a successful independent business district gained, on average, 50 percent more in home values than their citywide markets. • Independent retailers return more than three times as much money per dollar of sales than chain competitors. Independent

restaurants return more than two times as much money per dollar of sales than national restaurant chains. • If independent businesses regained their 1990 market shares, it would create 200,000 new small businesses, generate nearly $300 billion in revenues and employ more than 1.6 million American workers. • If just half of the United States employed population spent $50 each month at locally owned independent businesses, it would generate more than $42.6 billion in revenue. • For every square foot a local firm occupies, the local economy gains $179, vs. $105 for a chain store.

Last Minute Gift Giving: Gifts from the Heart

By Mary Drennon Special to the Trib

I

f you want to experience the true meaning of Christmas, forget about running out to buy presents, especially for those who already have everything they need. Instead, consider giving a gift from the heart that will have a more meaningful impact — he gift of helping others. There are literally dozens of charities and causes in Central Texas that you can help this Christmas. And, while money is the number one need for most agencies, if you don’t have it, there are other ways to help. “Most of the problems people face are emergency food and sheltertype agencies,” said Homer Trevino, executive director of the United Way in Waco. Instead of shopping for a present your parents may not need, consider donating money, time or goods to their favorite charities in their name. Find out what’s closest to their hearts, such as children, animals, the environment, the homeless and more. It could be the perfect present for that special someone on your list. If you don’t know where to start, consider the United Way of Waco-McLennan County (www. unitedwaywaco.org). The United Way coordinates annual campaigns to raise funds for 21 different entities in Central Texas. It serves a variety of causes, from senior citizens to children, to the environment, and more. Consider making a donation in the name of someone special or in memory of a loved one’s favorite cause.

While everyone needs money, if you don’t have it, there are plenty of ways to give, be it donating goods or volunteering your time. Don’t forget to get the children involved, too. It’s a great way to teach them the true spirit of Christmas. We’ve put together a list of a few of the charities in Waco and McLennan County to get you started. Not only is it a way to honor your loved, but it also feels good to give to others. And helping others is really epitome of what Christmas is all about. The Homeless Salvation Army 4721 W. Waco Dr., Waco salvationarmytexas.org/waco 254.756.7271 Jennifer Moya, public relations director for the Salvation Army Heart of Texas chapter, said there is an extensive variety of programs and services, including a men’s shelter and women and children’s shelter. They also maintain a family donation center and offer a special program to give exprisoners a second chance. “Our ministry is motivated by God and the gospel of Jesus Christ to meet human needs in his name without discrimination,” Moya said. You’re probably familiar with the Red Kettle ringers stationed in front of various stores, but Moya said more are needed. “It can be individuals, organizations, etc.,” she said. “The more people we have, the more funds we can raise.”

The Salvation Army is seeking families or organizations that are willing to “adopt” other families in need by doing anything from buying meals or sharing meals in your home, to buying Christmas presents. Photo courtesy of the Salvation Army.

Moya added that the Salvation Army is seeking families or organizations that are willing to “adopt” other families in need by doing anything from buying meals or sharing meals in your home, to buying Christmas presents. Currently, there are about 20 families needing adoption. The organization also needs volunteers in its thrift store and food pantry. Children Methodist Children’s Home 1111 Herring Ave., Waco mch.org 254.753.0181 Another organization worth lending your time and your dime to is the Methodist Children’s Home, which has been around nearly as long as the Salvation Army.

Russell Ranking, director of public relations, said the Methodist Home conducts a yearly campaign at Christmas called the Secret Santa program. The suggested donation is about $75, which “covers half of what we like to provide,” Ranking said. “Kids may have a certain wish list, so we can specifically tailor the list to what each one wants.” Of course, there are plenty of other volunteer opportunities, such as mentoring, tutoring, and assisting with spiritual development, to name just a few. “It’s a great way for people to come in and help with the kids,” Rankin said. Please call ahead if you’d like to assist in the Secret Santa program. For other ways to help, check out its website; just click on the Ways to Help link.

Animals Animal Birth Control Clinic 3238 Clay Ave., Waco animalbirthcontrol.org 254.776.7303 Since 1998, the Animal Birth Control Clinic (ABC Clinic) has worked to cut down on unwanted animal populations by providing lowcost spaying/neutering services and vaccinations for dogs and cats to qualifying low-income families and the elderly. “This year, we will do [spay] around 14,000 pets,” said Carrie Kuehl, executive director. “Vaccinations and microchipping has been a huge cultural change for our area.” To be compliant with the law, all animals must be current on their rabies shot and must be microchipped. Fortunately, there is some grant money available for low-income Waco residents for surgery and microchipping, but monetary donations are always needed. You can donate online through PayPal or mail a check to the clinic. If you know someone who recently lost a pet, donate in the pet’s name for a special Christmas touch. Beside money, other ways to help include volunteering for an office position or serving as a driver for shut-ins. In addition, the ABC Clinic has a wish list posted on its website with items such as batteries, bath towels, laundry detergent and more. “We couldn’t do what we do without our volunteers,” Kuehl said. Community Misfits misfitsrescue@yahoo.com facebook.com/Misfitsrescue Just last year, a small group of people created Community Misfits. Their mission is to rescue dogs headed for the pound and place them in loving homes. They also make it their business to educate the public about the need for spaying/neutering. Gail Forest, an animal rescuer with the organization, said they have about

WACO TRIBUNE-HERALD

five to six foster homes and could use a lot more. “If we had more, we could save more,” Forest said. “We don’t have a facility; all of our dogs are in foster homes.” If you can’t foster a dog, consider sponsoring one by paying for its basic needs. You can donate the funds in the name of a special child who for one reason or another cannot have a pet. To care for just basics, the cost is $120, Forest said, but any amount would help. The money goes to spay or neuter every animal and provide vaccinations and a heartworm test. Gail also cautions against giving pets for a Christmas present, “because just after Christmas, shelters see a surge in dog or cat populations, as they are often unwanted presents.” For donations, Community Misfits accepts funds through PayPal at misfitsrescue@yahoo.com. Those interested in becoming a foster parent can inquire about it at the same email address.

Fuzzy Friends Rescue 6321 Airport Rd., Waco fuzzyfriendsrescue.com 254.754.9444 Like Community Misfits, Fuzzy Friends Rescue is all about saving lives, but on a much larger scale. At any given time, they have roughly 150 to 160 animals they are attempting to adopt out. “We need community support more than ever before,” said Betsy Robinson, executive director of Fuzzy Friends. “The city of Waco is looking to go to a no-kill status. Fuzzy Friends has really stepped up in a big way.” Currently, they have taken roughly 110 dogs from the city of Waco that were on the brink of being euthanized, some of which have medical issues. While Robinson says they prefer cash to offset vetting costs, “there are many volunteer opportunities for those who want to help,” she said. It’s a wonderful way to remember someone at Christmas time; people can donate in honor of, or in memory of a friend, family member or beloved pet. Fuzzy Friends also has a wish list of items needed on its website, including blankets, scoopable cat litter, laundry detergent and much more. Get the family involved by volunteering in person at Fuzzy Friends, or consider becoming a foster parent, which helps tremendously by allowing more animals to be saved even when the shelter is full.

11

This is just a drop in the bucket when it comes to honoring loved ones this Christmas season. Toys for Tots, the American Red Cross, Meals on Wheels, Mission Waco, veterans’ causes and many more would gladly welcome assistance during this time of year — or anytime.

At a Glance: American Red Cross 4224 Cobbs Dr., Waco redcross.org/waco 254.523.4985 “Christmas is a great time of the year to encourage people to volunteer or donate, to really get into the spirit of Christmas,” said Curtis Eckman, disaster program manager of the American Red Cross HOT Chapter. Ways to Help: Sponsor an event; become a blood donor; join a disaster team; donate clothes to the Salvation Army or Goodwill; donate funds in a variety of ways; become a Champion for the Red Cross. Meals and Wheels 501 W. Waco Dr., Waco mealsandwheelswaco.org 254.752.0316 Tammy Woods, director of Meals on Wheels, said they have a waiting list of clients that need assistance, but they don’t have enough people to deliver meals, particularly in the Bellmead area. Ways to Help: Donate cloth or plastic coolers; lead the Pets Meals Program; serve or deliver meals; join the Handyman Program or Groceries to Go program; provide goods on wish list; make monetary donations.
