Bill Ramer has been a locally loved
Sunday, October 26, 2014
member of Central Texas for many years, and has starred in some of Waco’s best-loved television commercials featuring himself and the Unpainted Furniture mascot, Bubba Goodwood (yes, that name really happened). He purchased the infamous structure, built in 1946 to serve as a hotel, to host his business of building commercial-grade display fixtures for stores, which were shipped worldwide. In 1970, realizing his skill for building and working with his hands, led him to start his very own remodeling company. In 1972, he met his bride, Jean Stubblefield, and when he changed her name, he also changed courses in his professional life. Converting from wholesale into retail unfinished furniture, he started the Unpainted Furniture business. Unpainted Furniture has been catering to the needs of Central Texans for nearly 30 years, including finished and unfinished catalog furniture, custom-built furniture, complete antique restoration, recaning, repairing, stripping, and refinishing services as well. A few years back the demand for unfinished
furniture decreased and so it was time for some changes. LaSalle Shoppes was born 3 years ago when Bill’s wife, Jean, retired from teaching with 30 years under her belt. With the help of their daughter, Katy, the shop has signed on over 150+ vendors and expanded from one small little showroom into seven large showrooms, consuming most of the bottom floor. Thankfully, this 25,000 sq.ft. building has it’s own aura and history that provide a perfect setting for displaying novelties with a Antiques & Collectibles Mall link to the past. Since the changes, Bill and Tues - Fri 10am-6pm · Sat 10am-5pm · Sun 1pm-5pm Jean’s children, Matthew and Katy, are now taking over their locally loved family business, but the whole family works together to ensure that this entire building remains a fun, familyoriented, one-stoppe shoppe filled with onewww.unpaintedfurnitureplus.com of-a-kind treasures, a one-of-a-kind furniture business and a one-of-a-kind story.

The Village Bakery OLDEST

BAKERY

TEXAS
•
SINCE
1952
The Village Bakery, established in 1952, is best known as the “The First All-Czech Bakery in Texas”.
Mimi Montgomery Irwin’s parents, Wendel and Georgia Montgomery, opened this bakery as a response to West residents’ complaints that they were only able to get kolaches during the annual church bazaar. The family’s Catholic priest encouraged Wendel to open a bakery, so he cleaned out a storeroom next to his pharmacy, (The Old Corner Store Drug) while Georgia made curtains and painted the interior. Wendel and Georgia’s mother, “Honey Morris”, put their heads together and the family recipe was redesigned for commercial distribution. Without surprise, “Honey’s” traditional kolaches were an immediate sensation. The Village Bakery gained a state and international following and West’s reputation for this tasty treat earned it the title of “Kolache Capital of Texas” from the state Legislature. Signature items include such authentic Czech pastries as the kolache, klobasniki, strudel, and buchta as well as a variety of pies, breads and cookies. Today, The Village Bakery continues a 62 yr tradition in providing authentic Czech pastries. Mimi is a West native. She attended St. Mary’s Catholic School, West High School and graduated with Highest Honors from the University of Texas at Austin. Her fashion retailing career began at Foley’s in Houston and was followed by a 25 yr stint in NYC. She was a senior executive with Federated Merchandising Services, the New York corporate office of Federated Department Stores, (now Macy’s, Inc.). She is a board member and former President of the Fashion Roundtable and serves on the advisory board of TexWorld USA. Gramercy Associates, her consulting company, was established to provide forecasting information for women’s apparel. Mimi Irwin has been quoted and interviewed for a wide variety of publications from Women’s Wear Daily to the Wall Street Journal. She was a consultant and contributor to the Etiquette Advantage in Business by Peggy and Peter Post. Aside from maintaining her involvement in the apparel industry and running the bakery, Mimi is also active in a variety of Central Texas cultural and civic organizations. She is a Director of the Kiwanis Club of West, serves on the Standing Committee of the W R Poage Library and the McLennan County Historic Commission.

What distinguishes one jewelry store from another? Is it
plentiful unique and beautiful products? Great customer service? Reasonable prices? Perhaps it’s friendly, caring management. With Boozer’s Premier Diamonds & Time Pieces of Waco, it’s all these things and so much more. You won’t have to travel far to find lots of beautiful jewelry at great prices. Boozer’s has nearly eight showcases of wedding rings — the store’s specialty — in over 100 different designs, including loose diamonds that can be customized to make an unforgettable ring they won’t ever want to take off. “The way I do business is different than big corporations that are bound by what they do,” said Brad Boozer, owner. Not only can he get any designer you might want, but also, “if you bring me a picture or draw something on a paper, I can make that exact design,” he said. You can also take in your own ring or piece of jewelry to have it reworked into something beautiful and new. Boozer’s carries everything from white and yellow gold to platinum and precious stones. Its signature line, from revered designer Natalie K, features the most exquisite wedding rings from which to choose, and Boozer‘s offers an assortment of karats, from a three-karat diamond up to a striking 10-karat diamond. Prices, too, are set to match any budget —whether small, medium or unlimited — as rings can range in price from $300 up to $100,000. Boozer’s also has an extensive selection of timepieces featuring prestigious designers. You’ll find the largest inventory of Tag Heuer Swiss luxury watches for men and women in Central Texas, as well as watches by Michael Kors, Michele and other top designers in the industry. Store patrons also love the selection of fine jewelry, with stunning bracelets, earrings and necklaces the likes of which you won’t find elsewhere. “I have everything you want in some form or fashion,” Brad Boozer said. And unlike big mall or chain stores, Boozer’s has a true local advantage. In fact, the Boozer name has been part of the Waco community since 1968. Approximately 10 years ago, Brad Boozer started his business at the Valley Mills location, building an impressive store from scratch. Today, it’s a lot more than beautiful jewelry that brings people in, although having such an amazing variety and large selection doesn’t hurt. It‘s also the relationships Brad Boozer builds with his clientele that makes the owner and the store so unique and popular. Voted Waco’s Best Jewelry Store by Wacoan readers, Brad Boozer also was nominated as one of the best jewelers in the country by the National Jewelers Network, a leader in setting the standards for fine jewelers everywhere. (He even was invited to speak at the network’s convention.) Boozer also has a complete open-door policy; his office is

surrounded by all-glass walls for easy access, making himself available 24 hours a day, if needed. He offers an in-house repair shop, also encased in glass walls, so customers can view the repairs of precious jewels firsthand. An expert Rolex repairman, Boozer’s is often the first line of defense when it comes to repairing of fine jewelry. And you cannot buy something anywhere else for a better price — period,” said Brad Boozer, one large advantage of owning your own jewelry store. If you find something anywhere else, whether online or in another store, Brad Boozer said he not only would meet that price but beat it as well. He calls it the Boozer guarantee: “Boozer’s is very competitive with our diamond prices. You, the customer, are our main concern. So if you find a diamond any shape or size of likekind and quality, we will not only meet the price we will beat it ‘period.’ Just something to say you, the customer always comes first. “ When it comes to purchasing heirlooms to pass down for generations to come, including the absolute best wedding rings or luxury timepieces, you can’t go wrong with Boozer’s Jewelers. The combination of great service, exceptional quality, unbeatable prices and the incredible selection of elegant jewelry makes it the premier place to shop for your loved one. See it for yourself. You won’t be disappointed. Boozer’s is located at 1025 N. Valley Mills Drive. It is open Monday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., Tuesday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. .m. LOCAL FIRST | SUPPORT
Boost Your Economy
I
t’s simple economics. As much as $75 out of every $100 that you spend at locally owned businesses remain in your area, according to recent studies. Compare that to $40 at non-locally owned establishments and zero dollars when you buy online, and your shopping priorities should be crystal clear.
LOCAL IMPACT
More money staying put in your area means more funding for your schools, roads and hospitals. Tax revenue created from local purchases goes back into community improvements and new development opportunities. In short, your money plays a major role in enhancing your daily life and the lives of those around you – depending on where you spend it. Additionally, small-business owners are more likely to make social investments in the community by volunteering at their child’s school, donating to local charities and hosting fundraising events, according to The American Small Business Coalition. Doing so allows these entrepreneurs to ingrain themselves into their communities and make it known that they are sensitive to the needs of those around them. From local music groups to youth sports teams, small-business owners are quick to offer their sponsorship and money to help support community groups. This helps create customer buy-in for business owners, as well as a reputation for genuinely caring about their communities.
HIRING LOCAL
And since local business owners hire local workers – about half of all private sector workers are employed in small businesses, according to the Bureau of Labor – money for taxes and wages stays in the community, too. Unemployment statistics are linked very closely to the success or failure of small businesses, which means that your infusion of shopping money can also make a positive impact on a national level. This creates a strong © FOTOLIA connection between workers and customers alike. You’re more than just another number in the customer count when you visit a local business. Without your business, your local small-business owner would not be able to hire or retain as many local workers. From the owner down to the seasonal part-timer, all employees of small businesses depend on your support.

Lifetime of opportunities for
Ruth McCance
Ruth McCance never dreamed an opportunity to earn a few extra dollars part time would turn into a lucrative 46 year career with Mary Kay.
In 1968, within six weeks of signing an Independent Beauty Consultant Agreement she was earning more money selling Mary Kay products than she was at her full-time job. Ruth flourished as a successful businesswoman, wife and mother of four daughters and attributes her success to the flexibility this business allowed in providing financially for her family and allowing her to be there when they needed her. Through the years, she has evolved from placing facial boxes (that allowed potential new customers to sign up for free facials) to utilizing the internet for instant communications and online ordering.

LOCAL FIRST | EXPERIENCE
No Pressure on Customers
F
or local businesses, it’s all about the customer experience. This means friendly attitudes and a focus on you, not your dollars. You aren’t likely to find quota-driven salespeople around every corner at your local independent business.
That’s because small-business owners depend on your repeat business. If they scare you off the first time you visit their store, they also scare off future revenue.
POSITIVE EXPERIENCE
Local business owners treat you with respect and kindness because they need your support. Your money keeps their dreams alive, their families fed and their lights on. It also helps fuel their creativity and passion. Without innovation and a love for their business, independent retailers don’t have much of chance to succeed in the highly competitive fight for your dollar.
CONVERSATION
Local owners are quick to talk with you and ask about your life because they are genuinely interested in learning about their customers. Gaining a better understating of their target audience helps owners improve their services, which, in turn, boosts their bottom line. Conversation can be extra helpful if you’re trying to complete a home improvement project. One trip to your local hardware store can often be less time-consuming and more informative than one to a big box operation.
REAL PEOPLE
If you have a question for your local business owner, odds are you can track them down on the phone with one or two calls. And you can bet you’ll actually hear a human voice when you make your call. Finding courteous assistance without having to punch through a hoard of automated “please holds?” What a novel concept.

he Hernandez family opened up Rene's Bakery on July 28, 2000. They came from Monterey, Mexico and received their citizenship soon after. This family-oriented bakery/restaurant has vastly grown through the years, as customers constantly remind them of how they feel a part of Rene's because as kids they came here and, as adults, continue to enjoy their homemade authentic and Tex-Mex food. Their love for cooking and baking has been passed down for generations. They would like to thank all of their customers for giving them the opportunity to share their passion of cooking and baking. They don’t look at coming to work as a job, but as a pleasure to serve the community.
