POWER

Space abounds inside the 2015 Lincoln Navigator.

Under the hood of the new Lincoln Navigator is a 3.5-liter EcoBoost engine that delivers outstanding power on demand while also providing best-in-class fuel economy for the standard-wheelbase 4x2 model. The twin-turbocharged,

direct-injected engine is rated at 380 horsepower at 5,250 rpm and 460 lb.-ft. of torque at 2,750 rpm by the Society of Automotive Engineers. The EcoBoost formula of turbocharging and direct fuel injection creates a smoother torque curve than larger-displacement V8 engines. Navigator’s six-speed automatic transmission includes Lincoln SelectShift, which allows the driver to manually control gears if desired.

Navigator is available in rear-wheel-drive and fourwheel-drive configurations. An available Control Trac four-wheel-drive system enhances traction on slippery surfaces, helps improve handling on dry roads and enables off-road capability.

INTERIOR

Bumper to bumper, roof to floor, the 2015 Navigator was built with a comfortable passenger experience in mind. Acoustic laminated glass called SoundScreen,

enhanced carpet, headliner and insulated door and floor panels combine to create a quieter interior. Designed to seat up to eight, Navigator offers second-row options that include two captain’s chairs with or without a center console, or a fold-flat bench.

TECHNOLOGY

A passive entry system allows owners to enter without using a key. Inside, push-button start allows for keyless engine ignition. SYNC with MyLincoln Touch is standard is standard equipment. The driver connect system allows drivers to use voice-activated or touch screen controls to make phone calls, play music, manage the navigation system or set cabin temperature.

Tips to make the daily drive easier for commuters

I

t's a tough job driving to work - just ask the millions of Americans who commute every day. The average commute takes 25.5 minutes one way, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. However, 10.8 million people drive an hour or more to work each way. Some have it worse: approximately 1.7 million Americans commute 90 minutes or more each way. The key to driving to work is getting there on time and that means having a trustworthy vehicle that's in tip-top shape. "Tires are often overlooked but they should be a priority," says Bob Abram, product planning manager for Yokohama Tire Corporation, maker of a variety of truck and car tires. "They have an enormous effect on braking, steering, comfort, handling and fuel efficiency because tires are the only parts of a car or truck that actually touch the road." Commuters would be surprised at how today's high-tech tires can help drive down the costs of driving, says Abram. However, no matter how much technology tires pack these days, nothing can take the place of proper maintenance in getting the most out of them. No matter what your daily commute is, the more driving you do, the more you should check your tires regularly, especially the air pressure. "By keeping the right tire pressure, you can begin cutting down on your annual fuel costs, which will pay dividends," he says. "Tires that are under-inflated by 8 pounds per square inch can reduce vehicle fuel economy by as much as 2 percent. For the best gas-saving results, take five minutes each month and check your tire pressure." Abram recommends checking tires when they are cold (at least four hours after the vehicle has been driven). Check tire pressure

with a reliable tire gauge and make sure the valve stems have a plastic or metal cap to keep out dirt, water and foreign objects. You can find the tires' proper inflation level (as recommended by the car maker) on a placard in the glove box, on the car door or in the owner's manual. Abram offers commuters more tips that will keep tires road-ready and wallet-friendly. • Tires that are balanced correctly will provide a smoother ride and help prevent improper wear. You can get your tires balanced at the same time as your regularlyscheduled rotation. • Rotating your tires will also prevent uneven wear and promote a better ride. Because the weight distribution on your car or truck can vary, it's best to rotate your tires a few times a year, such as every time you get your oil changed. • Check tire alignment once a year. Misaligned tires create unnecessary tire wear and higher fuel consumption.

• Tires must be replaced when the tread is worn down to 2/32 of an inch (the lowest legal limit) to prevent skidding and hydroplaning. Best to replace before 2/32 depending on your drive (geographically and type of streets). Winter traction and wet traction start getting compromised well before 2/32. For example, rural streets that aren't regularly plowed would be different than city streets that are regularly plowed. • Checking tread depth: place a penny upside down into a tread groove. If part of Lincoln's head is covered by the tread, you're driving with the proper amount of tread. If you can see all of his head, you should buy a new tire.

Defeat drowsy driving dangers: Tips for staying awake at the wheel

O

ne in five fatal accidents in America involves a drowsy driver, according to a recent report from the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety. Unfortunately, driving while fatigued is common in today's business world. Yet the consequences of driving when you're tired can be tragic. "Drowsiness is similar to alcohol in how it compromises driving ability by reducing alertness and attentiveness, delaying reaction times, and hindering decision-making skills," says Dr. Nathaniel Watson, president-elect of the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM) and national spokesperson for the National Healthy Sleep Awareness Project, which is raising awareness of the dangers of driving while fatigued. "Drowsy driving is deadly, but it can be prevented." The Healthy Sleep Project has issued a Drowsy Driving Health Advisory, which urges every driver to take responsibility for staying "Awake at the Wheel." Drivers should make it a daily priority to get sufficient sleep, refuse to drive when sleep-deprived, recognize the signs of drowsiness, and pull off the road to a safe location when sleepy. "Rolling down the windows or turning up the music will do little to increase your alert-

ness while driving," Watson says. "You can drink coffee for a short-term energy boost, but if you catch yourself drifting into other lanes or nodding off, it's absolutely time to pull over and take a nap." Getting seven to nine hours of nightly sleep is the best way to prevent drowsy driving, according to the Healthy Sleep Project. Drivers should also avoid driving late at night or alone, and they should share the driving with another passenger on long trips. How do you know if you're too sleepy to drive? If you experience any of these warning signs, you should pull over or have another passenger take the wheel:

• You miss road signs or drive past your turn. • You drift into the other lane of traffic. • You drift onto the "rumble strip" or onto the shoulder of the road. The Healthy Sleep Project also encourages transportation companies to promote public safety by adhering to hours-of-service regulations, scheduling work shifts based on sleep need and circadian timing, implementing an evidence-based fatigue management system, and screening commercial drivers for sleep diseases such as obstructive sleep apnea. "There is no substitute for healthy sleep it's essential to promote personal safety and optimal alertness behind the wheel," Watson says. "Evaluate your sleep habits, address potential problems with a board-certified sleep specialist, and make sleep a priority to protect yourself, your passengers and other drivers from avoidable, life-threatening accidents caused by drowsiness."
