Note: This lot is accompanied by a letter from Geo. (rge) Alfred Meagher (1866-1930), a Canadian born artist specializing in watercolour. The accompanying typed letter from Mr. Meagher dated April 9th, 1920 addressed to Geo. R. Donovan, Esq., Toronto provides an opinion he and “Mr. Bell-Smith” certified this work as a very fine Hondecoeter. According to Mr. Bell-Smith, “... all the artists in the world to-day, could not paint a White Pheasant as well as it is painted in this picture.... “ By 1700, Dutch, Flemish, German, and French specialties had become less clearly distinguishable, with Dutch painters working for foreign princes and the market for still lifes growing throughout Europe. This still life has German newspaper clippings attached to the stretcher. $3,000—4,000

Provenance: Reportedly from a convent in Leuven, acquired by Camille Schols, Leuven, Belgium until his death circa 1901; By descent to his son, Henri Schols, Leuven, Belgium; By descent to his daughter, Canada Note: According to family records, in the mid 1970’s, at the time of restoration, this work was examined by Mr. Bernard Leech, Associate Curator in Charge of Restoration at the Royal Ontario Museum, Toronto who reputedly identified this work as a “copy of Raphael’s Madonna with Child” and after some tests and examinations (including x-rays), Mr. Leech felt it was likely painted in two sessions: first probably started by one of Raphael’s students in the year 1500, then the second time it was completed 80 - 100 years later by a second unknown artist of the Flemish School. Together with a file of 13 annotated black and white photographs showing the restoration done in certain areas of the painting by Toronto restorer, Jiri Ladocha in the mid 1970’s.
Note: This lot is accompanied by a typed letter from Louis Ryaux, dated at Paris on February 1983, stating the title: “Leda et le cygne” and dating the work circa 1680. In Ryaux’s opinion, he states the painting is not by the hand of Louis de Boulogne (Boullogne). Louis de Boulogne executed a very similar canvas in reverse of this scene entitled “Venus, Hymen el les Amours” measuring 162 x 178 cm. in 1688 as well as other scenes of this subject that have been Attributed to his hand or Circle.
