“It is said that at one time the muskox (umingmak) had tusks and they bothered him, mostly in the winter because they would crack and make noises, keeping the muskox awake. The Walrus (aiviq) had a horn, but because he was in the water most of the time it would become soft and was not useful for digging shellfish. The two animals exchanged the two tusks and horn, both to their mutual satisfaction.”

JOHN TIKTAK ᔭᓐ ᑎᑕ Mothers with their children was a subject that fascinated the artist. While in some versions, Tiktak’s subjects can seem strained or overburdened, this iteration is wonderfully serene. The child tilts his face up as if to catch the light, or to observe a passing bird. Tiktak’s style is well-noted for its minimalism, rooted as it was in the hardness of the available stone, which limited the artist’s ability to capture detail. Yet there is something facile in this characterization, as if it was the stone itself that produced genius, rather than the artist who harnessed it. Everything about this sculpture has been stripped to its essentials, a portrait of restraint. Tiktak would have been more than capable of adding a coat flap or the outline of a boot but instead chose not to. It is but the purest form that we see in front of us, seen as if in a dream or from a distance. All that remains is a mother carrying her child, smiling.

JOHNNY INUKPUK ᔭᓇ ᐃᓇᐸ How many artworks can you think about that are about surprise? Excluding the wonderment we feel when we see something great, astonishment and awe are in short supply in art. Johnny Inukpuk’s “Girl Uncovers a Hibernating Bear” immediately startles, sending a thrill through the viewer as we imagine ourselves stumbling upon a sleeping predator. Adding to the suspense—yikes!—the bear’s eyes are open! What would we do? And more importantly, what happens next?

Inukpuk’s sculpture is akin to a movie still, a paused moment in an action film or a chase sequence. The artist has rendered his subject in great detail, outlining the strands of her plaited hair, the fringe on her coat, the creases on her skin. Her hands are larger than life, drawing attention to their surprised gesture. Inukpuk’s model for this carving is most likely his wife Mary, identifiable by her cleft lip, which is visible in this sculpture. Perhaps this was created to depict a particular episode in Mary’s life, making this sculpture somewhat of a family album, or perhaps the most exquisite response to a familiar question: “how was your day, honey?” INUIT ART AUCTION

AQJANGAJUK SHAA ᐊᔭᒐᔪ ᓴᐊ “The agony of the dying caribou conveyed with intensity and feeling of prehistoric cave painting. The artist employs very sophisticated graphic renderings, particularly in the head of the animal; the print is almost expressionistic in its depiction of the caribou’s final struggles.”* Having taken up drawing and printmaking briefly in his youth, Aqjangajuk Shaa chose to focus on sculpting. Wounded Caribou is the only print the artist made that was released commercially, and was selected for inclusion in the annual Cape Dorset Print Collection. Shaa’s carvings are known for the dynamic poses of their subjects, often depicting caribou, bear and walrus. The energetic, expressive poses that are emblematic of Shaa’s mature style are clearly prefigured in Wounded Caribou.

KENOJUAK ASHEVAK ᑭᓄᔭᐊ ᐊᓯᕗ There is something quite fitting about Kenojuak, the grande dame of Inuit Art, representing her dreams in sharp relief. While the rest of us stumble around in the haze, Kenojuak’s crystalline vision appears to have extended deep into her subconscious. It is reported that Kenojuak would only rarely lift her hand off of the surface on which she was drawing, so assured was she in her composition, line and vision. This is evident in the sinuous lines of the animals, notably the fluidity of the birds at the top of the composition, which seems to stretch across the sky as if in slow motion. The viewer is left wondering if they are observing the artist within her dream—perhaps represented by the central figure dressed in an amaut—or are seeing through her eyes.

MARION TUU’LUQ A pioneer of the medium, Tuu’luq recounted that “I was one of the first people to make wall hangings. I had made a bird and embroidered it with a stitch that made it looks like feathers, and then everyone was asked to make them like that. My sewing, my humble sewing, was chosen to be the example to follow…it was all on my own. There was nobody showing me how to do anything.” When the artist began selling her work, sewing was seen as lying somewhere between utilitarianism and decoration, less desirable than the work of carvers or printmakers. Over the years this view has changed, allowing the traditional sewing skills of Inuit women to be valued as fine art in their own right. After initial experiments in colour, Tuu’luq began favouring dark backgrounds overlaid with more vibrant colours. She created dense compositions with motifs repeated in a way that nearly tipped over into abstraction, always bursting with visual complexity. KAROO ASHEVAK ᑲᕈ ᐊᓴᕙ AGO curator Wanda Nanibush explains that Karoo Ashevak’s art was shaped by scary stories of otherworldly monsters told to him at bedtime: “and then as he got older and he started carving, it’s like these stories kind of shifted in his mind and they became much more loving and funny to him.” Noted both for his humour as much as for the originality and skill of his art, “Spirit” is highly emblematic of Ashevak’s work. The subject’s face appears animated—either in surprise, fear or wonder—yet this spectre from another world is wearing mittens. The figure before us is thus rendered human and of this earth, almost charming, in need of protecting from the cold. Ashevak’s career was cut short by his death in 1974, one year after a solo show in New York City earned him major recognition in the United States and Canada. He had been sculpting for only four years, making this work a special find for collectors.

CHARLIE UGYUK ᓴᓕ ᐅᔭ Christian missionaries arriving in the Arctic, upon learning of the Inuit deities and spirits, were quick to place themselves in opposition to traditional culture and shamanism. As with many other cultures suppressed by European contact, a degree of grafting occurred, with the local mythology being subsumed by biblical rhetoric: all Inuit spirits thus became equated with the Christian devil. Charlie Ugyuk’s “Little Devil” brings to mind that iconic European devil, right down to the pitchfork. The subject resembles nothing more than the ‘Little Devil’ character in Warren Kremer’s “Hot Stuff” comics. Ugyuk’s demons (such as the recordbreaking “Demon Holding Young” auctioned at Waddington’s in 2013) are typically more intense and frightening than this impish sculpture, who appears more suprised than menacing.

JUDAS ULLULAQ ᔪᑕ ᐅᓗᓚ This double-sided sculpture portrays the multiplicity of existence, with the exuberance of the dance and cultural life depicted on one side, balanced by the dynamic energy of a man on the move on the verso. Another being is present too, in the form of the tiny apparition hovering on the dancer’s shoulder. This sculpture contains multitudes—the artist, the traveller, and the spirit. Drum Dancer with Spirit brings to mind Benvenuto Cellini’s “Perseus with the Head of Medusa” in the Piazza della Signoria in Florence. The front of that sculpture depicts the mythical hero raising the head of the Gorgon, while on the back of Perseus’ head, Cellini carved a self-portrait. Perhaps Drum Dancer with Spirit can be viewed as a self-portrait of sorts, representing the roles Ullulaq felt he embodied. Whether it is a personal or a more generalized portrait, Drum Dancer with Spirit asks us to consider more than one being, a grouping of figures in conversation with each other.

Private Collection, Atlanta, GA $2,000—4,000 Oonark takes the rich pattern work on the traditional amaut and stylizes it even further, rendering it as one would a modernist composition. For an image that tends nearly towards abstraction, Oonark incorporates several grounding details, including the traditional face tattoo of an Inuit woman. A prime example of the artist’s ability to translate common objects into symbols, the woman’s crescent-shaped ulu knife is used as a motif on both sides of the subject’s face. Oonark’s signature use of symmetry is displayed here, and a clear link to the artist’s famous “Big Woman” print can be seen. Similar prints are held in the permanent collections of the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Montreal, the National Gallery in Ottawa, and the Winnipeg Art Gallery.

CONDITION OF LOTS

All of the items are to be considered, unless otherwise noted in the description, in good condition. The definition of “good” when used in reference to condition, describes an object as having had no major damage or repair but as with the nature of the material, may show minor surface wear, discolouration etc., which indicates the acceptable wear that the piece may acquire with age. If you are particular about minor flaws, you should examine the pieces in person or have our staff answer any questions before bidding. Sizes are approximate. It is the sole responsibility of the bidder to inquire as to the condition of a lot before bidding. Condition reports are available upon request by phone, fax, email or in person. You are advised to make any requests well in advance of the sale. Frames on artwork are not included as part of purchase or condition.

BUYER’S PREMIUM

A premium of 20% of the successful bid price of each lot. A charge of 13% HST (Harmonized Sales Tax) is applicable on the hammer price and buyer’s premium, except for purchases exported from Canada. In the case where purchases are shipped out of the province of Ontario, the HST or GST is charged based on the tax status of that province.

Items shipped out of Ontario, the buyer is required to pay taxes as per the tax status of that province, whether it HST or GST (Goods and Services Tax). 4. The auctioneer reserves the right to withdraw any lot from sale at any time, to divide any lot or to combine any two or more lots at his sole discretion, all without notice. 5. The auctioneer has the right to refuse any bid and to advance the bidding at his absolute discretion. The auctioneer reserves the right not to accept and not to reject any bid. Without limitation, any bid which is not commensurate with the value of the article offered, or which is merely a nominal or fractional advance over the previous bid may not be recognized.

6. Each lot may be subject to an unpublished reserve which may be changed at any time by agreement between the auctioneer and the consignor. The auctioneer may bid, or direct an employee to bid, on behalf of the consignor as agreed between them. In addition, the auctioneer may accept and submit absentee and telephone bids, to be executed by an employee of the auctioneer, pursuant to the instructions of prospective purchasers not in attendance at the sale. 7. The highest bidder accepted by the auctioneer for any lot shall be the buyer and such buyer shall forthwith assume full risk and responsibility for the lot and must comply with such other Conditions of Sale as may be applicable. If any dispute should arise between bidders the auctioneer shall have the absolute discretion to designate the buyer or, at his option, to withdraw any disputed lot from the sale, or to re-offer it at the same or a subsequent sale. The auctioneer’s decision in all cases shall be final. 8. Immediately after the purchase of a lot, the buyer shall pay or undertake to the satisfaction of the auctioneer with respect to payment of the whole or any part of the purchase price requested by the auctioneer, failing which the auctioneer in his sole discretion may cancel the sale, with or without re-offering the item for sale. 9. The buyer shall pay for all lots within 48 hours from the date of the sale, after which a late charge of 2% per month on the total invoice may be incurred or the auctioneer, in his sole discretion, may cancel the sale. The buyer shall not become the owner of the lot until paid for in full. Items must be removed within 10 days from the date of sale, after which storage charges may be incurred. 10. Each lot purchased, unless the sale is cancelled as above, shall be held by the auctioneer at his premises or at a public warehouse at the sole risk of the buyer until fully paid for and taken away. 11. Notwithstanding condition no. 1, if the buyer, prior to removal of a lot, makes arrangements satisfactory to the auctioneer for the inspection of such lot by a fully qualified person acceptable to the auctioneer to determine the genuineness or authenticity of the lot, to be carried out promptly following the sale of the lot, and if, but only if, within a period of 14 days following the sale a written opinion of such person is presented to the auctioneer to the effect that the lot is not genuine or authentic, accompanied by a written request by the buyer for rescission of the sale, then the sale of the lot will be rescinded and the sale price refunded to the buyer.

12. Payment for purchases must be by cash, INTERAC direct debit (Cdn clients in person only), certified cheque (U.S. & Overseas not applicable), travelers cheque, bank draft, electronic transfer (fee applies), and VISA or Mastercard (up to $25,000). 13. In the event of failure to pay for or remove articles within the aforementioned time limit, the auctioneer, without limitation of the rights of the consignor and the auctioneer against the buyer, may resell any of the articles affected, and in such case the original buyer shall be responsible to the auctioneer and the consignor for: (a) any deficiency in price between the resale amount and the amount to have been paid by the original buyer; (b) any reasonable charge by the auctioneer for the storage of such articles until payment and removal by the subsequent buyer; and (c) the amount of commission which the auctioneer would have earned had payment been made in full by the original buyer. 14. It is the responsibility of the buyer to make all arrangements for insuring, packing and removing the property purchased and any assistance by the auctioneer or his servants, agents or contractors, in packing or removal shall be rendered as a courtesy and without any liability to them. 15. The auctioneer acts solely as agent for the consignor and makes no representation as to any attribute of, title to, or restriction affecting the articles consigned for sale. Without limitation, the buyer understands that any item bought may be affected by the provisions of the Cultural Property Export Act (Canada). 16. The auctioneer reserves the right to refuse admission to the sale or to refuse to recognize any or all bids from any particular person or persons at any auction.
