Mrs. Burke was married to Admiral Arleigh A. Burke, who was Chief of Naval Operations from 1955 to 1961 and led the Navy into the nuclear age. During the war years, she worked with the Red Cross and was also active in helping other Navy wives cope with their husbands’ long absences. Until her death, Mrs. Burke continued to receive hundreds of letters from Navy spouses she had helped and from foreign diplomats.
