Waddington’s launched its newest division, Concrete Contemporary Auctions and Projects (CCAP) in March 2012 with a vision and mandate to create a secondary market for contemporary Canadian art.
Waddington’s has been a major force in the Canadian art sector for over five decades, beginning with our first auction of Canadian Fine Art held at the Queen Elizabeth Building at the CNE in 1967. Koji Enokura (b. 1942-d.1995, Tokyo, Japan) Koji Enokura completed his MFA in oil painting at Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music in 1968 and went on to become one of the most influential artists of the Japanese modern art movement. Enokura was also one of the key figures behind the postwar movement known as the Monoha (School of Things), which emerged in the late 1960s and lasted until the early 1970s. The movement examined relationships between the organic and industrial world and grew in response to minimalism and the Land Art movement that had developed in the West. During the 1970s, Enokura received international acclaim for his highly conceptual works, which he exhibited in the Tokyo Biennale, as well as those in Paris, Venice, and Sydney. His spare, refined aesthetic explores issues of physical space and the relationships between himself and the surrounding world. The works also cast a critical eye on the political and economic issues faced by Japan during the 1960s. Enokura went on to exhibit at the Neue Galerie der Stadt Aachen in Germany; National Museum of Art in Osaka; Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum; Taipei Fine Art Museum; and Contemporary Art Museum of Seoul throughout the 1980s. More recently in July 2013, Koji Enokura’s work was showcased in a solo exhibition at Blum and Poe Gallery in Los Angeles.

Nobuo Sekine (b. 1942-, Saitama, Japan) Specializing in oil painting, Nobuo Sekine received his BFA from Tama Art University in Tokyo, Japan in 1968. Upon graduation, Sekine was invited to exhibit independently and also as a member of the Mono-ha (School of Things) at galleries in Japan and across Europe including Copenhagen, Bern, Genoa, Milan, and Venice. The Mono-ha, a collective of Tokyo-based artists including Sekine, emerged in the late 1960s during a period of transition between minimalism and Land Art. Although the group was not unified by one particular form or medium, at the core of the Mono-ha’s mandate was a desire to explore the interrelationship between the natural and industrial or manmade world, specifically focusing on materiality while also examining issues of space and perception. Sekine’s 1968, Phase: Mother Earth has often been credited as the first Mono-ha work.

Nobuo Sekine currently lives and works in Tokyo and Los Angeles, and is represented by Blum and Poe Gallery in Los Angeles, California. His works have been exhibited extensively throughout North America, Europe, and Asia and select shows include: Tokyo 1955-1970: A New Avant Garde at the Museum of Modern Art, NY, USA in 2012; Rachofsky House: New Exhibition Space, Rachofsky House, Dallas, TX, U.S in 2012; Ends of the Earth: Land Art to 1974, Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, CA, U.S. (also traveled to Haus der Kunstm, Munich, Germany) in 2012; Requiem for the Sun: The Art of Mono-Ha at Hirshhorn Museum, Washington, D.C., U.S. in 2011; MONO-HA: Reconsideration, The National Museum of Art in Osaka, Japan in 2005; and Century, Tate Modern Art Gallery, London, U.K. in 2005.

Tomio Miki (b. 1937- d.1978, Tokyo, Japan) Emerging from the Anti-Art movement of the early 1960s, Tomio Miki established himself as one of the most significant artists of the modern Japanese period and is best known for his aluminum alloy sculptures of the human ear. Rendered in various sizes, his ear sculptures are represented in many prestigious permanent collections including the Hara Museum of Contemporary Art, and National Museum of Modern Art, both in Tokyo, Japan, as well as the Museum of Modern Art in New York. In 1967, Miki was awarded at the ninth Nihon Kokusai Bijutsu Ten (International Art Exhibition of Japan) for Pink Ear 12, a polyester resin version of his ear sculpture series. During the 1960s, Miki also prized at the 6th and 9th Gendai Nihon Bijutsu Ten (Contemporary Art Exhibition of Japan) and the 5th Jeune Biennale de Paris. In 1971, Miki traveled to the United States for a year-long residency at the invitation of the Rockefeller Foundation. Works outside of Miki’s ear-sculpture series can be found at the Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum and National Museum of Modern Art.

Takashi Murakami (b. 1952-, Tokyo, Japan) Takashi Murakami received his BFA, MFA, and Ph.D. from the Tokyo University of the Arts and has become one of the most highly regarded and popular artists of his generation. Working in a variety of media including painting, sculpture, film, and installation, Murakami is best known for his distinctive “Superflat” style, which is loosely defined by its flattened, graphic imagery. Murakami’s colourful and glossy images are infused with a sense of play, incorporating cartoon-like characters and symbols, drawing from both traditional forms including woodblock prints (Ukiyo-e) and contemporary art, and pop culture such as manga and anime. Murakami’s works have been exhibited internationally at many prestigious galleries and institutions. Major solo exhibitions include: Museum of Contemporary Art, Tokyo (2001); Museum of Fine Arts, Boston (2001); Foundation Cartier pour l’art contemporain, Paris (2002); the Serpentine Gallery, London (2002); and Château de Versailles (2010). As only the third-ever contemporary artist permitted to exhibit at the Château de Versailles, the 2010 “Murakami-Versailles”, featured 22 of his works installed over 15 rooms and throughout the gardens. The show was a significant landmark in Murakami’s career and the juxtaposition of his bold and psychedelic works with the ornate French interiors served to push new boundaries. Between 2007 and 2009, Murakami curated a retrospective of his work entitled, “©Murakami” at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles. The exhibit then traveled to the Brooklyn Museum in New York, the Museum for Moderne Kunst in Frankfurt, Germany, and the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao, Spain in 2008-2009. In 2002, Murakami’s artistic vision translated into a collaboration with Louis Vuitton. Assuming a role as a “Friend of the House,” Murakami designed three limited edition collections of leather goods for the famed fashion house, which boosted his profile domestically in Japan and internationally. His ability to blur the lines between high art and commercial imagery has drawn him comparisons to Andy Warhol, with many art critics dubbing him as the “Japanese Andy Warhol”. His highly collectible works are well sought after, realizing staggering results at auction. On May 14, 2008, at Sotheby’s Contemporary Art Sale in New York, Murakami’s sculpture, “My Lonesome Cowboy,” sold for over $15 million USD. That same year, Time magazine named Murakami as one of their “100 Most Influential People,” and he was the only artist to appear on the list.

Ayako Rokkaku (b. 1982-, Tokyo, Japan) Active since 2001, Ayako Rokkaku is best known for her brightly-coloured and playful figural paintings, which depict adolescent subjects with elongated limbs and cartoonish features. Rokkaku’s use of finger painting infuses her paintings with a sense of looseness and fluidity and enhances the whimsical nature of her works. This style lends itself well to performance and collaboration and Rokkaku has been known to invite audience members at art fairs and shows to actively participate in the painting process. In 2003, 2005, and 2006 Rokkaku received the “Scout Prize” at Geisai, a contemporary art fair organized by Takashi Murakami, and won the “Goto Akio” award at the same festival in 2005. Since then, she has risen to international prominence and exhibited in France, Italy, Denmark, Germany, Belguim, and the Netherlands. She has also shown at Art Basel in Switzerland; Kunsthal Rotterdam; and TEFAF Maastricht, Netherlands. Represented by Gallery Delaive in Amsterdam, Netherlands, Rokkaku divides her time between the Netherlands, Germany, and Japan.

Masashi Nishizono (b.1982-, Tokyo, Japan) Masashi Nishizono is a Tokyo-based artist and educator. A graduate of Musashino Art University, Masashi is now enrolled in a joint Ph.D. program, focusing on Teacher Education, at the Science of School Education in Hyogo University. Nishizono’s “Place” series examines the concept of perspective. In these works, Nishizono re-imagines cityscapes and photos from his travels, splicing his images and presenting them in smaller geometric vignettes thus providing his audience with new views and angles. Widely exhibited throughout Japan, Nishizono’s works are also held in many private collections in Asia.

Wu Junyong (b. 1978-, Fujian, China) Wu Junyong attended China Academy of Art in Hangzhou, receiving his BFA in Printmaking in 2000, and MFA in New Media in 2005. Dividing his time between Beijing and Hangzhou, Wu currently works as an artist and also teaches at the School of Inter-media Art at his alma mater. Wu’s work often references historical Chinese literature, folk art, and culture, reinterpreting traditional symbols and motifs as a means of satire and political commentary. While his depictions of solitary figures and animals focus primarily on the state of Chinese political affairs, his works are infused with a deep sense of pathos and the issues of isolation, melancholy, and at times, despair, can be understood universally. Since 2002, Wu has exhibited in Brussels, Los Angeles, and Toronto as well as extensively throughout Asia in China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, and Korea. Zhang Yuanfeng (b. 1984-, Shanxi, China) Zhang Yuanfeng has gained international acclaim for her sensitive and emotional ink and brush paintings. Drawing from childhood memories, her works often depict scenes of children close-up, and possess a quiet intimacy. However, the images are far from innocent as many of the figures are rendered with a sense of maturity and expressions of sadness or distress. When viewed as a whole, her work serves as commentary on the cruel realities of modern society. First trained at the Beijing Arts and Crafts school in 2004, Zhang later went on to the China Central Academy of Fine Arts, earning her BFA in 2008 and MFA in 2011. Zhang’s works can be found in public and corporate collections including the Central Academy of Fine Arts and Zhejiang Art Museum. She has also exhibited throughout Asia in Tokyo, Japan; Seoul, Korea; and in Shenzhen and Shanghai, China

Ju Ting (b. 1983-, Shandong, China) Trained in printmaking at China Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing, Ju Ting received her BFA in 2007 and MFA in 2013. She now works and resides in Beijing. Ju’s richly textured works involve building up layers of paint and pigment on canvas to create a three-dimensional plain on an otherwise flat surface. The thickly layered paint is then carved, creating raised sections, and draws from the past, recalling the appearance of a traditional woodblock used in printmaking. Her works have been exhibited at numerous museums and institutions throughout China including CAFA Art, and National Art Museum of China, in Beijing and OCT Art and Design Gallery in Shenzhen. Ju has also been awarded international grants and awards, most recently the Lauréate du Prix YISHI 8 Chine 2013.

William Ho (b. 1960-, China) William Ho is an internationally renowned artist and lecturer. His works have been exhibited at the Royal Ontario Museum and Art Gallery of Ontario in Toronto, the Museum of Civilization in Ottawa, as well as the Louvre Museum in Paris. Recently, he was commissioned by the town of Richmond Hill to create a large-scale sculpture located at the Centre for the Performing Arts, entitled, “Love, Hope, and Harmony,” in celebration of the town’s 140th anniversary. Ho has also lectured at the Royal Ontario Museum for over 13 years as well as the Canadian Museum of Civilization in Ottawa. In 2006, he was invited to speak at the United Nations Headquarters in New York City to coincide with his solo exhibition, which also traveled to Parliament Hill in Ottawa.

Chen Minghiu (b. 1958-, China) Chen Minghiu trained at China Central Academy of Fine Art in Beijing, earning an MFA in oil painting in 2011. His works borrow from traditional ink and brush paintings, reinterpreting the classical forms in mixed media including acrylic and oil paint, lacquer with linen, and wire and paper. The paintings, influenced by his study of western art history, demonstrate the cultural exchange and dialogue between east and west. His works were included in the Great Hall of the People in Beijing, China in 2004; Shanghai World Expo in Shanghai, China in 2010; and Paris Winter Salon Exhibition in Paris, France in 2013; and have been widely exhibited in Singapore and the United States.
