Henri Le Sidaner’s enchanting garden view “Fenetre de Trianon Sous-Bois”, lot 67, gracing the front cover of Waddington’s Spring 2014 International Art catalogue, sets the stage for the many fine paintings offered in this season’s auction. After so long a winter season, its warm sunlight, arched window and lush greenery is all the more inviting. Acquired by Dr. Ronald Osborne of Toronto in 1975, and now part of his Estate, it is a befitting ‘window’ to our sale offering over 100 of the finest paintings, sculptures and drawings from Canadian, American and International collections spanning over 5 centuries, 4 continents and a multitude of genres. “Fertility”, lot 95, a rare canvas by Maqbool Fida Husain, whose works have led the booming South Asian art market, confronts you with its bold and powerful presence on our title page. This hitherto unseen canvas has belonged to a private collection in Montreal for over 30 years and encapsulates the artist’s unique approach to form and colour. The American session is led by two large canvases by Russian-American artist Abraham Manievich, acquired by Dr. Joseph Stern of Montreal directly from the artist whom he befriended in Canada, prior to the 1950s. The double-sided “Still Life of Flowers in a Copper Vase”, lot 10, featured on the inside front cover, and the vividly coloured, “In a Summer Garden”, lot 9, are coveted examples of the artist’s dynamic Fauvist painting style. Once again, we are pleased to offer you three oils by popular British artist Edward Seago, from Toronto Estates where they have been enjoyed some 50 years. Sir John Lavery’s elegant “Lady in Green” (Mrs. Cara H.), lot 52, held in the hands of Toronto families for over 100 years, was first exhibited in Toronto in 1909 at the newly formed Art Gallery of Ontario, then called the Art Museum of Toronto. The sale concludes with a Carlos Cruz-Diez kinetic art masterpiece “Physichromie No. 520”, lot 123, acquired by the present owners from the Pollock Gallery in the 1970s. Our Spring 2014 auction offers a selection of visually superb works of art for every collector taste, whether you are a lover of Old Masters, Modern, traditional or contemporary art. We look forward to welcoming you at our preview where all the paintings in their old world frames are sure to impress and entice you. — Susan Robertson Senior Specialist, International Art

Concrete Contemporary Auctions and Projects
Decorative Arts
Waddington’s launched its newest division, Concrete Contemporary Auctions and Projects (CCAP) in March 2012 with a vision and mandate to create a secondary market for contemporary Canadian art.
Decorative Arts at Waddington’s encompasses a broad and diverse variety of objects and the department's client database is one of our largest. From ancient to modern, delicate to deadly, Waddington’s Decorative Arts department redefines the term, bringing much more than traditional silverware and porcelain figurines to market, and with remarkable success.
Concrete Contemporary Auctions merges the worlds of traditional auction and the retail gallery, where our relationships with artists, art dealers, curators and collectors result in exciting new sources of contemporary works. The auctions are tightly focused on Canadian contemporary art since 1980 with an emphasis on mid- and latecareer artists with exhibition history in the private and public sphere. An exciting initiative of CCAP is the introduction of our Pop-Up Gallery series. These short-duration single artist exhibitions offer works by some of Canada’s most accomplished and influential working artists. As well, the groundbreaking Concrete Contemporary Acquisition Fund assists museums and public galleries in the acquisition of works by artists included in the auction.
Waddington’s reputation for developing new markets is well represented by our Decorative Arts department, as is our ability to present large collections – notable recent sales have included Contemporary Studio Glass, Scientific Instruments and Militaria. The department regularly offers auctions which include bronzes, items of Canadian Historical interest, ceramics, devotional works of art, glass, lighting, militaria, mirrors, objets de vertu, porcelain, scientific instruments, travel and exploration maps.
Led by one of Canada’s most plugged-in arts experts, Stephen Ranger, CCAP is committed to exploring new ways to connect, expand and support the contemporary art community.

95 MAQBOOL FIDA HUSAIN (19152011), INDIAN FERTILITY Oil on canvas; signed lower right, titled verso and inscribed number “H3-50/IC” 38.25” x 50” — 97.2 x 127 cm. $300,000—400,000
Provenance: Private Collection, Montreal Note: Maqbool Fida Husain’s “Fertility” reinterprets the traditional Indian motif of the Mithuna or “loving couple”, an iconic representation that first appeared in Indian sculpture over 2,000 years ago. Mithuna is understood to have multiple meanings, ranging from an obvious celebration of life’s pleasures to the more metaphorical symbolism of a human soul’s longing for union with the divine. Husain first painted the subject in his 1960 work “Mithuna Bronze” and would return to the theme throughout his career. In every incarnation, Husain transforms and all but rejects the old image. In the traditional motif, male and female are typically depicted in a loving embrace. Husain’s interpretation, by contrast, presents the couple with a different dynamic: glancing in opposing directions, recumbent, their postures exude isolation rather than unity. According to Husain scholar Shiv. S. Kapur, there are two clearly discernible strains in Husain’s painting; one which celebrates the beauty of life in simple forms and joyous rhythms of colour, and another which speaks of social hypocrisy, guilt and repression of sensuality. The disconnect between the male and female figures may allude to an erosion of a traditionally affirmative response to life experience in the community and the increasingly internal disintegration of the individual in modern society. The juxtaposition of repression and celebration is also mirrored in the formal elements of “Fertility.” The male figure in shades of grey appears cold and hard in contrast to his partner whose vibrant patches of colour and fiery yellow orb exude pulsating life. The traditionally positive connotations of the theme of “fertility” and new life contrasts strongly to the state of disconnect that appears to plague the subjects of this painting. The Mithuna, along with a preoccupation with the female figure, are two of the most recognizable motifs in Husain’s work which incorporate elements of classic Indian narratives as well as the influence of modern art’s inwardlooking tendencies. Husain’s work reflects both upon the state of modern society while staying grounded in archetypal parables of life, love and death. Source: “Husain” Richard Barthomew and Shiv S. Provenance: Delamare & Cie. Paris; Pollock Gallery, Toronto from whom purchased by the present Private Collection, Toronto in the early 1970’s $70,000—100,000
Note: Carlos Cruz-Diez is known as an influential contemporary master artist for his contribution to the theory and practice of colour, particularly in relation to physical movement. As a leader of the kinetic art movement that became an international phenomenon in the 1950s and 1960s, he was fascinated by the possibility of generating new visual experiences and a more interactive relationship with the viewer. Cruz-Diez’s “Physichromie” series originated in 1959 and is considered his most important body of work. The term, coined by the artist, means “physical colour” and references the investigation of colour in time and space. When colours are placed in parallel strips and at right angles, their relationships are blended and transformed and the spectator’s viewpoint changes. An innovator of his time, Cruz-Diez was active at the heart of the movement in Paris and participated in the Denise Rene Gallery’s legendary exhibition series “Le Mouvement” (1955, 1964) that helped to popularize kinetic and op art both in Europe and internationally.

Conditions Of Sale
1. All lots are sold “AS IS”. Any description issued by the auctioneer of an article to be sold is subject to variation to be posted or announced verbally in the auction room prior to the time of sale. While the auctioneer has endeavoured not to mislead in the description issued, and the utmost care is taken to ensure the correct cataloguing of each item, such descriptions are purely statements of opinion and are not intended to constitute a representation to the prospective purchasers and no warranty of the correctness of such description is made. An opportunity for inspection of each article is offered prior to the time of sale. No sale will be set aside on account of lack of correspondence of the article with its description or its reproduction, if any, whether colour or black & white. Some lots are of an age and/or nature which preclude their being in pristine condition and some catalogue descriptions make reference to damage and/or restoration. The lack of such a reference does not imply that a lot is free from defects nor does any reference to certain defects imply the absence of others. Frames on artwork are not included as part of purchase or condition. It is the responsibility of prospective purchasers to inspect or have inspected each lot upon which they wish to bid, relying upon their own advisers, and to bid accordingly. 2. Each lot sold is subject to a premium of 20% of the successful bid price of each lot up to and including $50,000 and 15% on any amount in excess of $50,000 as part of the purchase price.

The auctioneer has the right to refuse any bid and to advance the bidding at his absolute discretion. The auctioneer reserves the right not to accept and not to reject any bid. Without limitation, any bid which is not commensurate with the value of the article offered, or which is merely a nominal or fractional advance over the previous bid may not be recognized. 6. Each lot may be subject to an unpublished reserve which may be changed at any time by agreement between the auctioneer and the consignor. The auctioneer may bid, or direct an employee to bid, on behalf of the consignor as agreed between them. In addition, the auctioneer may accept and submit absentee and telephone bids, to be executed by an employee of the auctioneer, pursuant to the instructions of prospective purchasers not in attendance at the sale. 7. The highest bidder accepted by the auctioneer for any lot shall be the buyer and such buyer shall forthwith assume full risk and responsibility for the lot and must comply with such other Conditions of Sale as may be applicable. If any dispute should arise between bidders the auctioneer shall have the absolute discretion to designate the buyer or, at his option, to withdraw any disputed lot from the sale, or to re-offer it at the same or a subsequent sale. The auctioneer’s decision in all cases shall be final.
3. Unless exempted by law, the buyer is required to pay Harmonized Sales Tax on the total purchase price including the buyer’s premium. For international buyers, taxes are not applicable when purchases are shipped out of country. Items shipped out of Ontario, the buyer is required to pay taxes as per the tax status of that province, whether it HST or GST (Goods and Services Tax).
8. Immediately after the purchase of a lot, the buyer shall pay or undertake to the satisfaction of the auctioneer with respect to payment of the whole or any part of the purchase price requested by the auctioneer, failing which the auctioneer in his sole discretion may cancel the sale, with or without re-offering the item for sale.

Each lot purchased, unless the sale is cancelled as above, shall be held by the auctioneer at his premises or at a public warehouse at the sole risk of the buyer until fully paid for and taken away. 11. Notwithstanding condition no. 1, if the buyer, prior to removal of a lot, makes arrangements satisfactory to the auctioneer for the inspection of such lot by a fully qualified person acceptable to the auctioneer to determine the genuineness or authenticity of the lot, to be carried out promptly following the sale of the lot, and if, but only if, within a period of 14 days following the sale a written opinion of such person is presented to the auctioneer to the effect that the lot is not genuine or authentic, accompanied by a written request by the buyer for rescission of the sale, then the sale of the lot will be rescinded and the sale price refunded to the buyer. 12. Payment for purchases must be by cash, INTERAC direct debit (Cdn clients in person only), certified cheque (U.S. & Overseas not applicable), travelers cheque, bank draft, electronic transfer (fee applies), and VISA or Mastercard (up to $25,000).
