As the Canadian leader of Asian Art, we are pleased to offer over 350 lots from various consignors, collectors, and estates. Of particular note is the Collection of Harry Handel (1916-1972), the owner of Everyman’s Bookstore in Montreal. His collection includes an extraordinary group of Chinese and Himalayan bronzes, Chinese jades and ivory carvings. The highlight is surely the cover lot, a rare Chinese Imperial bronze figure of the Buddhist bull-headed guardian Yamantaka. We are also proud to present a wide selection of Indian Miniatures, notably Part III of the Estate of Theodore Allen Heinrich (1910-1981), a collection of modern Chinese scroll paintings from the Estate of Darius Alain, and a group of Chinese archaic bronze vessels from the Estate of Victor Topper. In addition to our Canadian consignors, many clients from the United States and abroad have entrusted us with their property and we have brought you works of art from Buffalo, New York, Philadelphia, Florida, and Hong Kong. Heartfelt thanks to all consignors, buyers, and consultants without whom this auction would not be possible. Please note that this fall’s auction will be complemented by another exhibition in our series of educational presentations. ‘Colour and Clay: An Exhibition of Chinese Qing Dynasty Porcelain from Toronto Collections’ will be on display during the Asian Art auction previews. This unique exhibition includes thirty-two carefully selected pieces of porcelain from four important Toronto collections. A full-illustrated exhibition catalogue will be available online and during the preview. — Anthony Wu Specialist, Asian Art

Decorative Arts
Concrete Contemporary Auctions and Projects
Decorative Arts at Waddington’s encompasses a broad and diverse variety of objects and the department's client database is one of our largest. From ancient to modern, delicate to deadly, Waddington’s Decorative Arts department redefines the term, bringing much more than traditional silverware and porcelain figurines to market, and with remarkable success.
Waddington’s launched its newest division, Concrete Contemporary Auctions and Projects in March 2012 with a vision and mandate to create a secondary market for contemporary Canadian art.
Waddington’s reputation for developing new markets is well represented by our Decorative Arts department, as is our ability to present large collections – notable recent sales have included Contemporary Studio Glass, Scientific Instruments and Militaria. The department regularly offers auctions which include bronzes, items of Canadian historical interest, ceramics, devotional works of art, glass, lighting, militaria, mirrors, objets de vertu, porcelain, scientific instruments, travel and exploration maps.

Concrete Contemporary Auctions merges the worlds of traditional auction and the retail gallery, where our relationships with artists, art dealers, curators and collectors result in exciting new sources of contemporary works. The auctions are tightly focused on Canadian contemporary art since 1980 with an emphasis on midand late-career artists with exhibition history in the private and public sphere. An exciting initiative is the introduction of our Pop-Up Gallery series. These shortduration single artist exhibitions offer works by some of Canada’s most accomplished and influential working artists. As well, the groundbreaking Concrete Contemporary Acquisition Fund assists museums and public galleries in the acquisition of works by artists included in the auction. Led by one of Canada’s most plugged-in arts experts, Stephen Ranger, we are committed to exploring new ways to connect, expand and support the contemporary art community.

“Off the Wall” Art
Waddington’s is internationally recognized as one of the leading authorities in marketing Inuit Art. No other auction house has been as intrinsically linked to the development of a market for this art form. Inuit Art is a proud part of our DNA. From our first landmark auction in 1978 of the William Eccles Collection, Waddington’s has offered thousands of works, set record prices, and expanded the market well beyond Canada’s borders.
Our “Off The Wall” Art online auctions are a unique opportunity to showcase accessible art. Drawing from our International Art, Canadian Art and Inuit Art divisions, “Off The Wall” Art auctions feature paintings, prints and sculpture.
Our legacy of successful Inuit Art auctions, our ability to achieve continually increasing values and our creation of an international market have been key factors in validating Inuit art as a whole and establishing it as an integral part of the Canadian Art scene.
These monthly, online auctions are always an eclectic selection of affordable works – a great way to learn, enjoy art and start building a collection. Working closely with our other divisions, this auction has developed its own diverse and extensive network of clients.

The Harry Handel Collection of Chinese and Himalayan Buddhist Sculpture (Lots 77-87) Purchased during the 1950’s at the Gurie Gallery, Montreal, thence by descent within the family. Harry Handel (1916-1972) was born in Montreal. Self-educated, he and his friend Louis Melzack both opened bookstores in downtown Montreal during the 1930’s. Handel’s bookshop was Everyman’s Bookshop, and Melzack opened Classics Bookshop. After marrying Louis’ sister, Esther Melzack, Harry and Esther grew their bookstore into an intellectual centre, specializing in exploration, anthropology, religion and art. Harry Handel became an authority in Canadian art and culture, and has been referenced in numerous publications and books (ref: G. Stevens, In a Canadian Attic; J. Houston, Confessions of an Igloo Dweller). Close friends and customers include leading Canadian artists of the day Arthur Lismer, Sam Borenstein and A.Y. Jackson. Alex Gurie, of Montreal’s famed Gurie Gallery, was also a close friend of Handel’s and taught him to appreciate and collect Asian antiques. Toward the end of Handel’s life, his second-hand bookshop had grown into an estate buying and art-dealing business. Everyman’s Bookshop closed in 1970 when Handel died at the age of 55. His

80 LARGE GILT AND LACQUERED BRONZE FIGURE OF THOUSAND-ARMED AVALOKITESVARA, CHINA, 16TH CENTURY Seated in vajrasana on a double lotus pedestal, with the main pairs of hands held in anjalimudra, high chignon, benevolent expression, the elongated uppermost hands held upwards supporting a Buddha, below a seven-leaf diadem modelled with twelve pairs of arms, each hand holding a ritual object including a reliquary, a ritual brush, a mala pearl, ceremonial dagger, ambrosia vase, Wheel of Law, bell, lotus, and other ritual objects, all raised to the sides and a further pair of arms held in front holding a chaojian, height 33.3” — 84.5 cm. $20,000—30,000
37
Note: Adorned in typical Han-Chinese robes and wearing an elaborate crown, the current example of the ‘thousand-armed’ Avalokiteshvara is a rare Daoist depiction of a Buddhist bodhisattva. Surmounted by a small figure of Amitabha Buddha (which is missing on many known examples), the wellcast figure represents the Daoist manifestation of the Buddhist deity of wisdom and mercy. His iconography is also characterized by the 24 long, spindly arms radiating from the slender body. One of the most revered deities, the ‘thousand-armed’ Avalokiteshvara was the earthly depiction of Amitabha Buddha and venerated as the ideal of karuna, the concept of compassion. During the 15th Century of the Ming Dynasty, Daoism and Buddhism encountered a cross-pollenization of ideas. At that time, the Tibetan Gelug School of Buddhism was founded. In consequence, Han-Chinese Buddhism gradually became the mainstream religion in the Imperial court, surpassing Mongolian Buddhism. In the Yongle and Xuande periods, Tibetan Buddhism became the most prominent religion in China, a fact that was reflected in the Imperial bodhisattvas workshops, known as the ‘Fozuo,’ (the literal Chinese to English translation is ‘workshop of making bodhisattvas’). Owing to the emperor’s religious preferences, Buddhism influenced the majority of bronze figures made in the ‘Fozuo’. 16th Century Daoist-Buddhist bronzes such as this present example are extremely rare. The proportions of his body depict a transition of style between Daoist and Buddhist vocabulary, which is showcased by the 28 arms, seven-leaf diadem, and slender waist. These transitional characteristics bear pivotal historical meanings and support his influence from the early Ming Period. For a comparable example of this figure dated to the Ming Dynasty (but probably 16th Century), see Christie’s Hong Kong, May 27, 2009, lot 1951.

82 EXTREMELY RARE AND LARGE IMPERIAL BRONZE FIGURE OF YAMANTAKA WITH CONSORT, CHINA, QIANLONG MARK AND PERIOD (1736-1795) Cast standing in alidhasana upon birds and horses and the bodies of prostrate figures, above a beaded lotus plinth, numerous arms radiate about him with the primary arms grasping his consort and holding a kartika ritual curved knife and skull cap, wearing an elephant skin at his back, three heads within the tall flaming hair, wrathful expression on the face, height 18.1” — 46 cm., seven-character Qianlong mark to base $30,000—50,000
Note: Heavily cast and of large size, this extraordinary example of Yamantaka rendered in the form of a wrathful Manjusri, is extremely rare. Known as an ‘Istadevata’ in Mahayana Buddhism or ‘Yidam’ in the Gelug school, Yamantaka protects followers of tantric Buddhism, and personifies the victory of wisdom over death. The Qianlong emperor was fascinated with Tibetan Buddhism and favoured the buffalo-head figure, which he perceived as his personal meditational deity. It is possible that this current Yamantaka came from one of the Imperial ‘Liupin Folou’ or the ‘Six Buddhist Class Temples’. These temples were dedicated to Je Tsongkhapa, the founder of the Gelug School of Buddhism. Under Emperor Qianlong's reign, numerous imperial Gelugpa temples were built in the Forbidden City to worship this sect. In the ‘Liupin Folou’, more than 700 bronze deities were placed on separate altars according to their levels of tantras. Most of them ranged in size from 15 to 50 cm. Similar to the current example, many of the Imperial Buddhist bronzes were parcel gilt and seated on a beaded lotus base. Additionally, several of these bronzes also bore the same impressed seven-character Qianlong mark, which was only used before the 46th year of the Qianlong reign. Similar Imperial bronze figures from the ‘Liupin Folou’ have appeared in the auction market over the years. A parcel gilt bronze figure of Kalachakra with a similar Imperial mark was sold at Sotheby’s London, November 4, 2009, lot 215. A bronze figure of Namgyalma with seven-character Qianlong mark was sold at Poly Auction, Beijing, December 1, 2007, lot 924.

274 LARGE LACQUERED BRONZE FIGURE OF WEI TUO, 16TH/17TH CENTURY Finely cast, the guardian of the Buddhist faith, Skanda, portrayed with a youthful face, two hands held in anjalimudra, wearing full chain-mail armor and helmet with a cloud-like ornament in front, surrounded by billowing celestial scarf, sleeves and ribbons, height 15.9” — 40.3 cm.
Provenance: Private Vancouver Collection. Purchased in San Francisco during the late 1990’s. Note: The current example of Wei Tuo is rare because of its large size and remnants of gilt lacquer throughout. Wei Tuo, also known as the bodhisattva Skanda, is recognized as one of the eight divine protectors of Chinese Buddhism. Originally, he was a mortal prince who strictly adhered to Buddha’s teachings. When the Buddha entered nirvana, he instructed Wei Tuo to protect his teachings. Despite being of Indian origins, the present figure of Wei Tuo is distinctly Chinese. His martial bearing and armour suggests that he is a high-ranking Chinese general. For a smaller and gilded example of Wei Tuo, see Christie’s New York, March 20/21, 2014, lot 2049. $20,000—25,000

Conditions Of Sale
1. All lots are sold “AS IS”. Any description issued by the auctioneer of an article to be sold is subject to variation to be posted or announced verbally in the auction room prior to the time of sale. While the auctioneer has endeavoured not to mislead in the description issued, and the utmost care is taken to ensure the correct cataloguing of each item, such descriptions are purely statements of opinion and are not intended to constitute a representation to the prospective purchasers and no warranty of the correctness of such description is made. An opportunity for inspection of each article is offered prior to the time of sale. No sale will be set aside on account of lack of correspondence of the article with its description or its reproduction, if any, whether colour or black & white. Some lots are of an age and/or nature which preclude their being in pristine condition and some catalogue descriptions make reference to damage and/or restoration. The lack of such a reference does not imply that a lot is free from defects nor does any reference to certain defects imply the absence of others. Frames on artwork are not included as part of purchase or condition. It is the responsibility of prospective purchasers to inspect or have inspected each lot upon which they wish to bid, relying upon their own advisers, and to bid accordingly. 2. Each lot sold is subject to a premium of 20% of the successful bid price of each lot up to and including $50,000 and 15% on any amount in excess of $50,000 as part of the purchase price.
sale at any time, to divide any lot or to combine any two or more lots at his sole discretion, all without notice. 5. The auctioneer has the right to refuse any bid and to advance the bidding at his absolute discretion. The auctioneer reserves the right not to accept and not to reject any bid. Without limitation, any bid which is not commensurate with the value of the article offered, or which is merely a nominal or fractional advance over the previous bid may not be recognized. 6. Each lot may be subject to an unpublished reserve which may be changed at any time by agreement between the auctioneer and the consignor. The auctioneer may bid, or direct an employee to bid, on behalf of the consignor as agreed between them. In addition, the auctioneer may accept and submit absentee and telephone bids, to be executed by an employee of the auctioneer, pursuant to the instructions of prospective purchasers not in attendance at the sale. 7. The highest bidder accepted by the auctioneer for any lot shall be the buyer and such buyer shall forthwith assume full risk and responsibility for the lot and must comply with such other Conditions of Sale as may be applicable. If any dispute should arise between bidders the auctioneer shall have the absolute discretion to designate the buyer or, at his option, to withdraw any disputed lot from the sale, or to re-offer it at the same or a subsequent sale. The auctioneer’s decision in all cases shall be final.
3. Unless exempted by law, the buyer is required to pay Harmonized Sales Tax on the total purchase price including the buyer’s premium. For international buyers, taxes are not applicable when purchases are shipped out of country. Items shipped out of Ontario, the buyer is required to pay taxes as per the tax status of that province, whether it HST or GST (Goods and Services Tax).
8. Immediately after the purchase of a lot, the buyer shall pay or undertake to the satisfaction of the auctioneer with respect to payment of the whole or any part of the purchase price requested by the auctioneer, failing which the auctioneer in his sole discretion may cancel the sale, with or without re-offering the item for sale.

Each lot purchased, unless the sale is cancelled as above, shall be held by the auctioneer at his premises or at a public warehouse at the sole risk of the buyer until fully paid for and taken away. 11. Notwithstanding condition no. 1, if the buyer, prior to removal of a lot, makes arrangements satisfactory to the auctioneer for the inspection of such lot by a fully qualified person acceptable to the auctioneer to determine the genuineness or authenticity of the lot, to be carried out promptly following the sale of the lot, and if, but only if, within a period of 14 days following the sale a written opinion of such person is presented to the auctioneer to the effect that the lot is not genuine or authentic, accompanied by a written request by the buyer for rescission of the sale, then the sale of the lot will be rescinded and the sale price refunded to the buyer. 12. Payment for purchases must be by cash, INTERAC direct debit (Cdn clients in person only), certified cheque (U.S. & Overseas not applicable), travelers cheque, bank draft, electronic transfer (fee applies), and VISA or Mastercard (up to $25,000). Without limitation, the buyer understands that any item bought may be affected by the provisions of the Cultural Property Export Act (Canada). 16. The auctioneer reserves the right to refuse admission to the sale or to refuse to recognize any or all bids from any particular person or persons at any auction.
