It is with great pleasure we present Waddington’s Spring 2015 Fine Prints and Photography Auction. Using outstanding quality and rarity as our guiding principles, we have assembled this sale of fine prints, multiples and photographs tailored to the tastes of both our emerging and experienced collectors. The result is over 300 lots of the most renowned Canadian and international artists that illustrate the multitude of artistic movements found over the course of 500 years of printmaking. Highlights of this auction include many fine graphics by Canadian printmakers, represented by a roster of major works from coast to coast: from Western Canada, the important colour woodcut by Walter J. Phillips, Mamalilicoola, British Columbia, 1928; from Eastern Canada, two silkscreen prints by Alexander Colville, his Raven, 1990 and Cat on the Fence, 1959. In addition, we are extremely privileged to offer a rare series of five states of House at Path End, 1977 by Christopher Pratt; from Ontario, two early monoprints by Harold Town and The Skates, 1972 by Ken Danby; from Quebec, Claude Tousignant’s Sans Titre (Series of Six Abstracts), 1975. Works by American Pop artist Andy Warhol are also included. Graphics from his most famous series, Campbell's Soup Cans; Liz, 1965; and three unsigned acrylic panels attributed to The Factory. These are testaments to his preoccupation with mass production, consumerism and the pleasure of repetition. Prints and complete folios by the most significant international masters such as Rembrandt van Rijn, Henry Moore, Pablo Picasso and Alberto Giacometti present a most powerful offering. Works by contemporary photographers Robert Mapplethorpe, Saul Leiter and Richard Harrington are featured alongside classic black and white prints by influential artists of the past such as William Notman’s photographs of 19th century Canada. ROBERT MAPPLETHORPE Lots 86 – 89 Mapplethorpe’s photography is dominated by images of nudes both male and female. Mapplethorpe’s images, as we see in Lots 86-89, are all together aﬀronting and frank in their depictions. The viewer senses the physicality of the bodies and their vulnerabilities despite their confrontational presentation. What’s more, Mapplethorpe’s evocative use of velvety haze of the silver print contrast with the jarring depictions of the truncticated or otherwise impersonal sitters to evoke pain and violence and yet they are markedly and overwhelmingly sexual.

CANADIAN ARTIST CHRISTMAS CARDS Lots 126 – 139 We are pleased to oﬀer the following collection of Canadian artist Christmas cards. Most were published by the Wm. E. Coutts Company in the late 1920’s and early 1930’s. These designs were commissioned from twenty-six Canadian artists, several of whom were members of the Group of Seven. The resulting silkscreens created slightly embossed images,

perfect for capturing the various scenes of wintertime jovialities and snow covered villages. As a result of this economic trouble of the era, coupled with the disposable nature of Christmas cards, a very limited number of these printed greetings remain in existence.

[pgs. 97-101]: “Now the totems were of great interest to me, as examples of primitive art, and I wept when he [the tour guide] said that the method of making them was lost in the mists of antiquity. [...] Alert Bay — the Papeete of the North Pacific — they said, was the place to go to. I went. [...] The town is built on a strip of land above the beach — a single street with a long and tenuous water-front, facing the sea, and brushing the fringe of the forest. [...] The surroundings of Mamalilicoola are beautiful, and the village itself, larger than the other as we saw it from the sea, was strongly attractive. I was anxious to walk its single street. The bay in which we lay was secluded. The shore was obscured by a dense forest, which limited our view. On the chance that there was a trail within it leading to the village, we rowed to the head of the bay in the dinghy, and stepped ashore. There was indeed an old blazed trail, and a walk of a mile or more in a green twilight brought us to our objective. We entered a strange world as we emerged from a mass of head-high nettles on the sward immediately beneath a tall and magnificent totem-pole. It stood in front of a community house, the pediment of whose facade was carved and painted with an allegorical figure of the sun, flanked by two fishes. As we turned to the sea we looked upon a crescent beach, gleaming white with broken clam shells. A long and sinuous pier of floating logs indicated a good deal of canoe traffic.”

Glossary of Printmaking Terms

A.P. (Artist’s proof): Prints made outside of a regular edition for an artist’s own use and excluded from the numbering of a printed edition. Also called epreuve d’artiste (E.A.). Aquatint: An intaglio method for creating uniform tones on a matrix. B.A.T. (Bon a tirer): “Good to pull” or “good to be printed.” A printer’s working proof, which serves as the standard of quality by which other prints will be judged as they are being printed. Chalcography (defined by http://dictionary.reference.com/b rowse/chalcographic): The art of engraving on copper or brass. Chromotypograph (defined by Bamber Gascoigne): Colours printed from variously textured metal blocks, with or without other colours from woodengraved blocks; an intermediate stage between a manual and process print. Embossing: A printing technique which raises all or part of an image from the paper. Engraving: An intaglio printmaking method in which a pointed tool is employed to incise the lines of an image into a matrix. Copper engraving (defined by Bamber Gascoigne): A line engraving on copper, in practice all line engravings before 1820 and a minority thereafter. Stipple engraving (defined by Bamber Gascoigne): The important parts achieved by means of stipple, whether etched or engraved, regardless of whether etched or engraved lines are also used to reinforce the

image. Etching: An intaglio printmaking process in which images are scratched with a sharp tool onto a metal plate covered with an acid-resistant waxy material, the ground. Acid is then applied to “bite” the scratched image areas into the plate. Etching with drypoint (defined by Bamber Gascoigne): An etching, but with drypoint lines included from which the burr has not been removed, giving the characteristic rich furry look to parts of the image. Open-bite etching (defined by http://www.magicalsecrets.com/studio/glossary): Also called flat biting, means means biting areas of a plate without inserting tooth or texture. Tooth may be provided by aquatint, or in soft ground etching by paper grain or other material pressed into the wax ground, or in hard ground etching by closely spaced lines not drawn so close that the ground separating them erodes in the acid. Wide flat depressions without tooth, even if deeply bitten, will be wiped out as the printer clears the surface ink from the plate in preparation for printing. Ink accumulates at the edges of an image that is flat bitten, but in its center only the ink held in the grain of the metal remains after the plate is wiped. The image prints as an irregular gray with dark edges. H.C. (Hors de commerce): A designation often made on a number of prints which are not intended for sale. Intaglio: A term used to describe printing methods in which images are incised or “bitten” into the matrix with tools or acid.

Japon paper: A high quality, acidfree art paper made from mulberry fibers. Also called Japan paper. Linocut: A relief printing method in which the image is cut into a sheet of linoleum. The design to be inked and printed is formed by cutting away areas on both sides of the image lines, leaving the outline intact on the surface of the linoleum block. Also called linoleum cut. Lithograph (defined by Bamber Gascoigne): Printed from a stone or metal surface on the principle of antipathy between grease and water, therefore including Zincograph: if wishing to distinguish more precisely between different types of lithograph (the difference relating in each case to how the image was achieved on stone), the likely categories are pen-and-ink, chalk, mezzotint style, lithotint, spatter and stone engraving. Offset lithograph (defined by http://www.donaldheald.com/glo ssary/glossary_01.php): Lithographs printed by transferring an image from a stone or plate to an intermediate surface and then to the print paper. Mezzotint: An intaglio process in which the entire surface of metal plate is textured with a special tool called a rocker. The plate would print solid black if inked at this stage. The artist makes his drawing by scraping away certain areas to produce white and gray tones in the image. Monoprint: An image made using a printmaking medium and materials but only one print is produced. Also called monotype. Photogravure: A high-quality

photographic reproduction made from a copper printing plate. Also called gravure. Relief Printing: Any printing method where the non-image areas are gouged out of the surface of the matrix leaving the raised portions to form the image. Screenless offset lithograph (defined by Bamber Gascoigne): halftone achieved by gaining of the lithographic plate rather than by a cross-line screen. Screenprint (defined by Bamber Gascoigne): Any print made exclusively by the screenprinting method, whether originated by hand or photographically. Silkscreen: A stencil print created by forcing ink or paint through a cut stencil or the open mesh of a screen onto sheets of paper. Also called Serigraph. Stonecut (defined by Inuit Artists Print Workbook Volume 3, Book 2: Print Documentation) : A negative image of the design is traced on to the stone so that when the stone is inked and a print is pulled, it is right-reading and appears exactly as the drawing. Woodcut: A relief printing method in which an image is incised into the side of a block of wood.

Bidding To bid in person at the auction, you must register for a bidding number by showing identification acceptable to the Auctioneer upon entering the salesroom. Your number will identify you if you are the successful bidder. You will be responsible for all lots purchased on your bidding number. Banking information may be requested by Waddington’s™. You may submit an Absentee Bid Form if you are unable to attend the sale. Bidding by telephone, in limited circumstances, can be arranged prior to the sale. While we are pleased to offer absentee and telephone bidding as a service to our clients, and take great care in their commission, the Auctioneer will not be responsible for technical difficulties, errors or failure to execute bids. The Auctioneer may also execute bids on behalf of the consignor to protect the reserve. The reserve is the confidential minimum price the seller is willing to accept for his or her property, below which it will not be sold.
