It is with great delight we present Waddington’s Spring 2015 Asian Art Auction. This auction is always a pleasure to assemble, and based on our guidelines of quality and rarity, we are pleased to offer over 350 lots that will be enticing to both emerging and experienced collectors. We have been extremely fortunate to secure over 80 excellent quality Chinese scroll paintings from the Qing Dynasty and the 20th century that form the focus of our auction. The scrolls, from various prominent collections, were discovered in our cross-Canada travels and visits to the United States this past winter. In addition, a selection of modern scrolls paintings by artists such as Zhao Shao'Ang (1905-1998) and his circle, from part two of the estate of Darius Alain (1926-2013) are included. The Estate of Yick-Ho Wong (1923-2011) is another outstanding collection we are pleased to offer this spring. This Hong Kong gentleman amassed a collection of late Qing Dynasty and 20th century paintings, calligraphy and rubbings, that were featured in his store “King Won Court” in the mid-1960’s. Prize pieces include a group of large-format paintings by the 20th century modern painting master Ding Yanyong (1902-1978). A massive Longquan charger from the 15th century, consigned to us from an important Montreal collection, highlights the Chinese ceramics section. A rare celadon Ru-type hu vase with Tongzhi Mark, period (1862-1874) from the estate of Barbara Fincham (19292014) adds further beauty. Our cover lot is perhaps our most exceptional item in this sale --- a large, three-drawer huanghuali coffer table from the late Qing Dynasty. With immaculate wood graining on the table’s surface, this handsome item exemplifies the importance of both form and material in Chinese furniture production. It was purchased from Pao & Moltke Toronto in 1971. Rounding out the auction, we are pleased to present a selection of items from Japan, India, and the Himalayas, including Satsuma, miniature paintings and religious bronzes. Known as an ‘Iṣṭadevata’ in Mahayana Buddhism or ‘Yidam’ in the Gelug School, Yamantaka protects the followers of tantric Buddism. Symbolizing the victory of wisdom/knowledge over death/ignorance, Yamantaka is important not only because he belongs to Anuttarayoga Tantra, the highest yoga tantra, but also because of is associations with the Chinese Emperor Qianlong (1736-1795) who regarded Manjusuri as his own meditational deity.

Note: As opposed to the smaller one-drawer and two-drawer variants, the present example is a traditional three-drawer coffer table, or liansanchu. An extended hidden compartment mid-section contributes to its larger size compared to other three-drawer tables. The rare huanghuali body is wonderfully crafted to demonstrate a handsome golden-honey colour and distinct wood grain, characteristic of this precious Chinese hardwood. Prototypical carvings of foliage and chilongs are found on the table’s two spandrels and apron, and the doors are complete with baitong mounts. As a staple of classical Ming-style furniture, the altar coffer is characterized by its elegant shrine-like form as well as a set of drawers with a concealed compartment underneath. This genre of cabinet was favoured predominantly in Northern China, and used sometimes as a domestic altar and more often as a storage space. Unique to other huanghuali furniture, a fair percentage of coffer tables are of mixed-wood type, composed of salvaged hardwood pieces or veneered softwood cores. Such careful use of precious hardwoods is indicative of the table’s persistent popularity towards the late Qing to Republican period, during which time, tropical hardwoods like huanghuali became less abundant when compared to the Ming Dynasty. The Ming-style altar coffer reflects an enduring appreciation for Ming antiquity as well as the craftsman’s ingenuity and skill. The present lot is a wonderful example of a three-drawer coffer table. Not only is it rare for its impressive size, but also for its expensive huanghuali material. 97 RARE ALOESWOOD CARVED LOTUS-FORM DISH Well rendered and carved in the round as an open lotus ﬂanked by a small cluster of ﬂowers and pods to one side, the underside revealing a network of twisting branches, length 4.5” — 11.5 cm. Provenance: Private New York Collection. Note: Aloeswood (latin aquilaria agallochaor, Chinese chenxiangmu) is the mould-infected resin found in the evergreen aquilaria tree (Chinese enxiang mu). This genus is found throughout South East Asia and its heartwood has a pale, light tone. Once infected with the fungus, the heartwood produces a dark and dense resin with an aromatic scent. It is this precious resinous wood that is treasured around the world, particularly in China, Japan and Tibet. Not many carvings of aloeswood like the present example have survived due to the soft and perishable nature of the material. $12,000—15,000

Late Qing and Early Republican Period Chinese Paintings from a Private Toronto Collector (Lots 125-134) The owner of this collection is originally from Shangdong China and moved to Hong Kong in the 1950’s. It was this during time he became a fervent collector of Chinese scroll paintings. In 1967, he immigrated with his family to Toronto, and between 1982 and 1986 he opened up an antique store called the Chinese Antique Gallery on 204 Spadina Avenue.

Important Chinese Paintings from the Estate of YickHo Wong (Lots 151-169) Mr. Yick-Ho Wong 黃英豪 (1923-2011) was a scholar, artist, and avid collector of Chinese painting and calligraphy. Mr. Wong was born in Taishan, Guangdong 廣東省台山, and upon graduating from elementary school, he moved to Hong Kong and studied at Wah Yan college 天主教華仁書院. At the outbreak of the Japanese invasion, Mr. Wong moved back to Chongqing, and for the next couple of years, served as an interpreter for the United States military. On the side, he also taught Kuomintang artillerymen how to speak English. After the war, Mr. Wong studied one year at the Southwest Associated University, Kunming 昆明西南聯合大學, and then was accepted to the prestigious Tsinghua University 清華大學 in Beijing where he majored in economics. While there, he also took courses in traditional Chinese painting under the great Xu Beihong 徐悲鴻 (1895-1953). With the impending growth of communism, Mr. Wong returned to Hong Kong and graduated from normal school to become a teacher. He was oﬀered a position with the Hong Kong Government School 香港官校 as a woodworking instructor.

During his spare time, Mr. Wong continued to learn traditional Chinese painting at the New Asia College 新亞書院. There he met and studied under several artists such as Zhou Shixin 周士心, and Zao Xuechin 趙學琴. His fellow students included Pan Weihong 彭惠康, and Poon Waikong 潘偉江. Perhaps the best known of Mr. Wong's teachers was Ding Yanyong 丁衍庸（1902-1978). Ding Yanyong also fled communist China and was living in poverty during his first years in Hong Kong. Mr. Wong befriended Ding Yanyong, and supported the artist by providing him with art materials in exchange for art lessons. The ensuing friendship, artistic dialogue, and weekly painting sessions formed the foundation of Mr. Wong's extensive collection. Furthermore, Mr. Wong opened a shop in 1965 in Tsim Sha Tsui Kowloon called “King Won Court” 景雲閣 (“Sublime Clouds Shop”). The store was devoted to the visual arts, and he sold arts supplies, antique books and calligraphy. By the mid-1960’s when Hong Kong's political situation became volatile, Mr. Wong looked to Canada for a new beginning. Canada had a dearth of teachers and was looking overseas for skilled workers in the education field. In 1967, Mr. Wong brought his wife, three young children, and collection of paintings to their new home.

Provenance: Purchased form Pao & Moltke, Toronto. Note: Guan ware, along with Ru ware, Ding ware, Ge ware, and Jun ware, is regarded as one of the ‘Five Great Wares’ of the Song Dynasty. These wares were revived in porcelain-form during the early Qing Dynasty, and perfected by the Qianlong Emperor (1736-1795) as homage to the past. Note: Large Longquan celadon chargers like the current example were made during the Ming Yongle reign (1403-1424) when the Longquan kilns in Zhejiang were producing ceramics under direct orders for the Imperial court. During the early 15th century, the kilns producing Longquan celadon wares in Zhejiang and blue and white porcelain wares at Jingdezhen, created some of the finest ceramics to accommodate the varied tastes of Mongolian patrons. These exotic designs were well received amongst the Mongols who resided in China at that time, and also those gifted Chinese ceramics in diplomatic trade. One of the more popular shapes was the large charger with bracket-lobed rims such as the present example. Large Longquan chargers of this size (more than 22 inches in diameter) and thickness are extremely rare because they did not often survive the firing process. Typical chargers are 20 inches or less. Unsuccessfully fired chargers of this form and size, have been excavated throughout the Longquan kilns. A similar but larger Yongle Longquan charger from The Meiyintang Collection was sold at Sotheby’s Hong Kong, October 5, 2011, lot 7. Another charger of this size is in the National Museum of China, Beijing, and is published in Zhongguo Guojia Bowuguan guancang wenwu yanjiu congshu/Studies on the Collections of the National Museum of China. 194 PAIR OF FLAMBÉ GLAZED ‘POMEGRANATE’ VASES, 18TH/19TH CENTURY Of lobed and broad ovoid body, all raised from a short spreading foot, covered in an incandescent glaze of strawberry tone widely streaked in milky blue and purple draining from the outward-turned rim indented at the edges where the glaze pales to a light brown, the bases unglazed, height 12.2” — 31.1 cm. Provenance: Christie’s New York, March 24, 2011, lot 1753. Private Toronto Collection.

Note: With respect to Chinese porcelain, a flambé glaze refers to a rich reddishpurple coat of colour layered with lavender and milky-blue streaks. This spectacular glaze is the result of mixing elements such as copper, iron, cobalt, and titanium in a high-fired 1300-degree reduction inside the kiln. This ‘accidental beauty’ was first discovered during the Tang dynasty (618907) for phosphatic glazed earthenware, and was perfected on porcelain in the Yongzheng Period (1723-1735). It was during the 18th Century that the Imperial Workshop was able to moderately control the quality of the flambé by spraying transparent glazes onto the layer of un-fired pigments, and also by adjusting the percentage of the porcelain’s clay body. The current pomegranate vases, with its wellmanipulated patterns and deep purplish tones, showcases the technical advancements in firing the flambé glaze, and its requirement of a highly experienced temperature control and material quality.

195 MINIATURE RU-TYPE GLAZED VASE, 18TH CENTURY With elegant proportions, the well potted vase supported on a tall, subtly spreading foot with pierced openings on either side, the bulging waist rising towards a smooth rectangular rim with the neck flanked by a pair of vertically oriented lug handles, covered with an overall crackle pattern over the pale grey glaze throughout. Wood stand, height 3.9” — 10 cm. Provenance: Property from a Hong Kong Collector, purchased during the 1960’s. Note: The miniature fanghu provides living evidence of the refined literati taste during the Qing dynasty. As a scholar object it reflects the revival of archaism and Song ware during this time and reveals the popularity of collecting ‘wen fang ya wan’ (treasures from the scholar’s studio) amongst the literati. Song wares were first fired in the imperial kilns, and due to their popularity, miniature versions were created for the scholar’s studio, mimicking the shape, proportions, and glazes of their larger counterparts. The current example is extremely rare because of its size and perfect condition. A comparable example from the Qianlong period was sold at Sotheby’s Hong Kong, October 8, 2013, lot 3054. 197 RARE GUAN-TYPE FANG HU VASE, TONGZHI MARK AND PERIOD (1862-1874) The two broad sides decorated with a peach-shaped relief panel and flanked on either side of the narrowed neck with a pair of rectangular lug handles, covered with an overall crackle celadon glaze suffused with a wide network of dark grey crackle patterning, the base of the foot with a dark glaze, height 12.2” — 31.1 cm., Tongzhi six-character underglazed mark to base Provenance: The Estate of of Barbara Fincham née Swinson (1926-2014), Toronto and Los Angeles. Purchased in L.A. during the early 1950’s and appraised by Sotheby’s during the 1970’s. Thence by descent within the family. Note: The current vase reflects the interest in archaism during the Qing Dynasty through form and glaze. Form-wise, the vase is based on square-shaped bronze vessels from the Shang and Zhou Dynasties. The glaze is a revival of Song Dynasty Guan ware, which usually consists of a pale blue tone and large black and gold crackles throughout. Archaism flourished within the Qing Dynasty kilns of Jingdezhen during the reign of Emperor Qianlong (1736-1795). During this time, many imitation Song wares were introduced such as Ge, Guan, Ru, and Longguan. Guan-type wares were one of the more desirable categories of Song-revival porcelain. According to the Emperor Qianlong’s Imperial poem, ‘After Chaiyao, Guanyao (Guan-ware) is the finest quality ware exceptionally rare and difficult to fire’. This ode to Guan ware was documented in ‘The Imperial Workshop Diary’ and also incised to the base of a small Guan-type fanghu from the Earl and Irene Morse Collection, and sold at Christie’s New York, September 15, 2009, lot 355. The trend of archaism in the 18th century continued through the rest of the Qing Dynasty. However, Song-style vases from the Tongzhi reign are rare due to the emperor’s short reign (1862-1874). A pair of similar vases was sold at Christie’s New York, September 19, 2013, lot 1343. (mark)

198 FINELY ENAMELLED YELLOW GROUND FAMILLE ROSE BUDDHIST STUPA, 19TH CENTURY The shrine is superbly modelled and enamelled against a brilliant yellow ground with stylised lotus blooms borne on multihued vines issuing smaller flowers below monster masks linked by pendant beaded chains, surmounted by a lotus-lappet pedestal supporting a set of 13 graduated Buddhist umbrellas, each tier with a narrow floral band, set atop with a skirted cap with a ribboned Buddhist emblem of the vase, the stupa supported on a square base decorated with bands of lappets and floral scrolls on a green ground, height 17.4” — 44.3 cm. Provenance: From an important Canadian collection. Note: A stupa refers to Buddhist commemorative monuments, usually housing sacred relics associated with the Buddha or related saints. For the convenience of traveling and private devotion, portable models of stupas made of bronze became a standard ritual object for practitioners of Tibetan Buddhism. In the first-half of the 18th Century, the imperial Chinese kilns started to mimic other mediums, such as bronze, wood, and hardstone, through the use of porcelain to showcase their mastery of their skill. This idea achieved its zenith under Emperor Qianlong’s reign (1736-1795). As an enthusiastic Buddhist follower and a porcelain devotee, Emperor Qianlong combined his passions by reproducing Tibetan ritual objects through porcelain. This trend continued until the end of the Qing Dynasty. Despite being a later example, the current stupa is important amongst this category because it continued the tradition of porcelain Buddhist ritual objects. It also showcases the expertise of the craftsman because the stupa had to be fired in four separate sections. Sophisticated factors such as clay expansion and glaze shrinkage had to be considered. For a similar porcelain stupa from the late Qing Dynasty, see Tranthy Beijing, December 16, 2012, lot 238. Another from the James White collection was sold in Poly Beijing, June 5, 2013, lot 6158. Two Chinese Jade Carvings from the Collection of Sir Michael William and Lady Wendy Turner, Hong Kong and London (lots 207208) Given as gifts to Sir Michael (19051980) (KBE. CBE. OBE. Hon LLD) while he was the Chief Manager of The Hong Kong and Shanghai Bank (Later HSBC) between 1953-1962. Sir Michael William Turner was born in Winchester, England, in 1905. He studied at University College, Oxford with a degree in military history and a stint on the English national ﬁeld hockey team. Upon graduation, he joined the London HSBC oﬃce and was then posted to Shanghai. On his second tour in Shanghai he met and married Wendy Stranack (later Lady Wendy Turner), but was

subsequently transferred to Singapore where he was interned in Changi jail for the duration of WWII. It took six months to recover from the camp, and afterwards, he resumed his business career and succeeded Sir Arthur Morse as Chief Manager of HSBC in 1953 where he was instrumental in the considerable post-war expansion of the bank. Following retirement in 1963 he served as Chairman of the British Bank of the Middle East. Sir Michael died in London in 1980. A Turner room in the main Hong Kong branch of HSBC commemorates his services to the bank. During his time in Hong Kong he and Lady Turner acquired a number of Chinese jade carvings, porcelain, and works of art.

Conditions Of Sale

1. All lots are sold “AS IS”. Any description issued by the auctioneer of an article to be sold is subject to variation to be posted or announced verbally in the auction room prior to the time of sale. While the auctioneer has endeavoured not to mislead in the description issued, and the utmost care is taken to ensure the correct cataloguing of each item, such descriptions are purely statements of opinion and are not intended to constitute a representation to the prospective purchasers and no warranty of the correctness of such description is made. An opportunity for inspection of each article is oﬀered prior to the time of sale. No sale will be set aside on account of lack of correspondence of the article with its description or its reproduction, if any, whether colour or black & white. Some lots are of an age and/or nature which preclude their being in pristine condition and some catalogue descriptions make reference to damage and/or restoration. The lack of such a reference does not imply that a lot is free from defects nor does any reference to certain defects imply the absence of others. Frames on artwork are not included as part of purchase or condition. It is the responsibility of prospective purchasers to inspect or have inspected each lot upon which they wish to bid, relying upon their own advisers, and to bid accordingly. 2. Each lot sold is subject to a premium of 20% of the successful bid price of each lot up to and including $50,000 and 15% on any amount in excess of $50,000 as part of the purchase price. 3. Unless exempted by law, the buyer is required to pay Harmonized Sales Tax on the total purchase price including the buyer’s premium. For international buyers, taxes are not applicable when purchases are shipped out of country. Items shipped out of Ontario, the buyer is required to pay taxes as per the tax status of

that province, whether it HST or GST (Goods and Services Tax). 4. The auctioneer reserves the right to withdraw any lot from sale at any time, to divide any lot or to combine any two or more lots at his sole discretion, all without notice. 5. The auctioneer has the right to refuse any bid and to advance the bidding at his absolute discretion. The auctioneer reserves the right not to accept and not to reject any bid. Without limitation, any bid which is not commensurate with the value of the article offered, or which is merely a nominal or fractional advance over the previous bid may not be recognized. 6. Each lot may be subject to an unpublished reserve which may be changed at any time by agreement between the auctioneer and the consignor. The auctioneer may bid, or direct an employee to bid, on behalf of the consignor as agreed between them. In addition, the auctioneer may accept and submit absentee and telephone bids, to be executed by an employee of the auctioneer, pursuant to the instructions of prospective purchasers not in attendance at the sale. 7. The highest bidder accepted by the auctioneer for any lot shall be the buyer and such buyer shall forthwith assume full risk and responsibility for the lot and must comply with such other Conditions of Sale as may be applicable. If any dispute should arise between bidders the auctioneer shall have the absolute discretion to designate the buyer or, at his option, to withdraw any disputed lot from the sale, or to re-offer it at the same or a subsequent sale. The auctioneer’s decision in all cases shall be final. 8. Immediately after the purchase of a lot, the buyer shall pay or undertake to the satisfaction of the auctioneer with respect to

In the event of failure to pay for or remove articles within the aforementioned time limit, the auctioneer, without limitation of the rights of the consignor and the auctioneer against the buyer, may resell any of the articles aﬀected, and in such case the original buyer shall be responsible to the auctioneer and the consignor for:

(a) any deficiency in price between the re-sale amount and the amount to have been paid by the original buyer; (b) any reasonable charge by the auctioneer for the storage of such articles until payment and removal by the subsequent buyer; and (c) the amount of commission which the auctioneer would have earned had payment been made in full by the original buyer. 14. It is the responsibility of the buyer to make all arrangements for insuring, packing and removing the property purchased and any assistance by the auctioneer or his servants, agents or contractors, in packing or removal shall be rendered as a courtesy and without any liability to them. 15. The auctioneer acts solely as agent for the consignor and makes no representation as to any attribute of, title to, or restriction affecting the articles consigned for sale. Without limitation, the buyer understands that any item bought may be affected by the provisions of the Cultural Property Export Act (Canada). 16.
