130 A RARE AND FINE LONGQUAN CELADON GLAZED MINIATURE JAR, SOUTHERN SONG/YUAN DYNASTY (1127-1368) ƦǮȺȡɓɁȝȪůɈǩ ȻțJǟǹ Moulded with two lug handles, decorated in white slip with scrolling flowers and plantain leaves, all covered in sea-green glaze excluding the base height 4.1" — 10.5 cm.

Note: The earliest renditions of this vessel form can be found in early Western Zhou ceramics, a shape originally based off of a fishing hamper. This form with its globular body, tapered foot and small lug handles persisted into Song and Yuan dynasty, when Longquan celadon wares peaked in the foreign trade market. These pieces were largely fired in kilns located in Zhejiang, with these particular ‘guan’-type jars exported to the Southeast Asian market. The celadon glazed jar demonstrates a well-potted foot rim, the top of which neatly lining the base of the plantain leaf motif, and the entire body decorated with fine lines and florals in white slip. The glaze retains a subdued sea-green colour washed with a slightly bluish tinge, characteristic of a later Song and Yuan dynasty celadon. A similar example of this glaze colour can be found in the Sakamoto Goro Collection sold at Sotheby’s New York, September 16, 2014, lot 2.

Harold became a respected member within the community of collectors, with fellow experts often seeking his advice and guidance. 205 A FINELY ENAMELLED YELLOW GROUND FAMILLE ROSE BUDDHIST STUPA, QING DYNASTY ɑɓȄljǦǠȴȽǜƋƩr The shrine is superbly modelled and enamelled against a brilliant yellow ground with stylised lotus blooms borne on multi-hued vines issuing smaller flowers below monster masks linked by pendant beaded chains, surmounted by a lotus-lappet pedestal supporting a set of 13 graduated buddhist umbrellas, each tier with a narrow floral band, set atop a skirted cap with a ribboned buddhist emblem of the vase, the stupa supported on a square base decorated with bands of lappets and floral scrolls on a green ground height 17.4" — 44.2 cm. $4,000—6,000

Provenance: From an important Canadian collection Note: A stupa refers to buddhist commemorative monuments, usually housing sacred relics associated with the buddha or related saints. For the convenience of traveling and private devotion, portable models of stupas made of bronze became a standard ritual object for practitioners of Tibetan buddhism. in the first-half of the 18th Century, the imperial Chinese kilns started to mimic other mediums, such as bronze, wood, and hardstone, through the use of porcelain to showcase their mastery of their skill. This idea achieved its zenith under emperor Qianlong's reign (1736-1795). As an enthusiastic buddhist follower and a porcelain devotee, emperor Qianlong combined his passions by reproducing Tibetan ritual objects through porcelain. This trend continued until the end of the Qing Dynasty. Despite being a later example, the current stupa is important amongst this category because it continued the tradition of porcelain buddhist ritual objects. it also showcases the expertise of the craftsman because the stupa had to be fired in four separate sections. Sophisticated factors such as clay expansion and glaze shrinkage had to be considered. For a similar porcelain stupa from the late Qing Dynasty, see Tranthy beijing, December 16, 2012, lot 238. Another from the James White collection was sold in Poly beijing, June 5, 2013, lot 6158. both were documented in Atouch 2013 auction reference booklet, page 682-683. Krahl in Chinese Ceramics in the Topkapi Saray Museum, istanbul, vol. iii, London, 1986, p. 1105, no. 2564, where they have been ďŹ tted with metal mounts to suit ottoman use Note: With carefully controlled bursts of ink resulting in small concentrated pools of paint, the “heaped and piledâ€? method of decoration, as seen in this present example, purposefully recalls earlier 15th century techniques. Although potters had mastered the art of ďŹ ring and painting underglaze cobalt blue by the 18th century, this stylistic reference, with its bold brushwork and sporadic bursts of ink, served as both a reminder and tribute to the highly prized and admired works of previous dynasties. 232 LE PHO (1907-2001) L'ÉTÉ DANS LE JARDIN TɓƯȣɈ oil on canvas 31.4" x 23.1" — 79.8 x 58.7 cm. Provenance: Wally Findlay Galleries, New York $12,000—15,000

Le Pho Le Pho was born in 1907 in Hadong, a town to the South of Hanoi in North Vietnam. He was raised in a distinguished family as the son of Le Hoan, the Viceroy of Tonkin during the reign of emperor Ham Nghi. Le Pho received a prestigious education, both at home and abroad, studying at École des beaux-Arts in Hanoi before attending École des beaux-Arts in Paris on a scholarship in 1932. While in Paris, Le Pho had the opportunity to study under Victor François Tardieu, a friend and companion of Matisse. This early exposure to both eastern and Western influences and techniques became the foundation of Le Pho’s aesthetic. The confluence of these seemingly disparate styles is evident throughout his oeuvre, with eastern and Western concepts reimagined and reworked into a striking synthesis. Le Pho’s works often depict stylized figures, floral stills, and lush gardens, rendered with a distinct, dreamlike elegance that is evocative of impressionism.

The current lot is an exquisite example of Le Pho’s artistry. A boy and his mother are sat amidst a lush and vibrant garden, the boy tenderly reaching for her hand. The foliage surrounds the pair, creating an intimate and sheltered space intended solely for them. The mother looks down affectionately, while the boy meets the gaze of the viewer. His glance breaks one’s passive observation of the scene, reminding us that we are the intruding observer. While diminutive, the young child is protective of his mother and of this sacred space they share. This piece offers at once a verdant impressionistic landscape, and a poignant illustration of the tender dynamic between mother and son. Le Pho’s subtle, sensitive and elegant technique is finely evidenced in this work, as is his characteristic synthesis of styles and genres.

From the Collection of Robert Stephenson (Lot 268-277)

Asian Art Auction - Monday 28 November 2016 at 6 pm

We are privileged to offer further pieces from the discerning collection of Robert Stephenson, a renowned collector and dealer. Bob was born in Brantford, Ontario in 1948. After receiving an honours degree in physics, mathematics and chemistry, he pursued a successful career in banking. In 1980, he was transferred from Vancouver to Asia with the Toronto Dominion Bank, and it was there that he fell in love with Asian art. He began collecting Chinese, Japanese, Thai and Korean pieces, and became particularly enamoured with figures of the Buddha, explaining that they gave him a sense of “peace and serenity”. To accommodate his growing collection, Bob began to sell various pieces, and in 1983 he and a friend, Nonny Clemete, established their company Artifacts. When the bank proposed Bob’s relocation to North America in 1984, he opted to trade in his suit and tie for his signature silk-shirt-andblack-pant ensemble, and focused all of his time on collecting and dealing in Asian art. He expanded Artifacts internationally, establishing showrooms in Hong Kong, Brussels, Toronto and Manila, and also opened a factory workshop in Manila where furniture was produced. Bob’s passion for Asian art was enduring, and despite his success in banking, he asserted that “I know I am much happier this way. Maybe I have to work twice as hard, but I am also having twice as much fun doing what I do.” Bob’s collection was internationally recognized for its quality and breadth, as highlighted in Dimensions in Living magazine (March 1988, Hong Kong), illustrated here.

272 SAWANKHALOK BROWN-AND-PEARL POTTERY MODEL OF MYTHICAL SERPENT, NAGA, 15TH/16TH CENTURY /½ōĘûžĿũžŌŽżƀÙěsƀ'qÝĄěÓ The architectural fixture with an open mouth and ferocious expression, potted in two sections height 35.8" — 91 cm. Note: Naga serpent deities are largely associated with protection, an association featured by the Buddhist account of the naga Muchalinda sheltering Shakyamuni in meditation from harsh weather. The Buddha backed by Muchalinda’s multiple heads is popularly depicted in Buddhist art, an example of which can be found in the current sale, lot 270. The naga is also tied closely with nature and water, with the ability to both nourish life and afflict it with natural disaster. This rendition is more popularly found in the combination of Buddhist and local folk culture from Thailand, Burma, Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam, where communities flourish around water and the Mekong River culture. This fierce, stylistic depiction of naga is an established component of Buddhist ‘wat’ architecture in Thailand. The naga head emerges at the end of decorative ‘lamyong’ roof finials, with the neck twisted upwards in a sagittal s-curve and gaze pointed towards the heavens. This image of the water serpent represented a bridge between heaven and earth, a harmonized relationship in Buddhist cosmology. These architectural and sculptural images evolved from ancient Indian, Chinese, and Southeast Asian influences to form a distinct Thai cultural emblem. This piece is fired in two substantially large and intact sections. Both feet are grounded beneath the rising transition from the body into the neck, with the ‘kranok’ patterned crest, horn and tongue sturdily fired as part of the main body component. $600—800

Peter Arrell Brown Widener November 13, 1834 – November 6, 1915 Manet and Auguste Renoir, and many pieces of fine Chinese porcelain, which are included in the permanent collections of several important galleries. He also commissioned the construction of two noteworthy dwellings, the first of which was an ornate mansion by architect Willis G. Hale at the northwest corner of Broad Street and Girard Avenue in Philadelphia. He lived at this property for thirteen years, eventually donating it to the Free Library of Philadelphia as a memorial to his late wife, Hannah. In 1900, he completed Lynnewood Hall in Elkins Park, Pennsylvania. Designed by Horace Trumbauer, the impressive 110-room Georgian-style mansion was conceived of as a gallery space for what Fortune Magazine called "the finest private collection of past art to be found in the U.S." Lynnewood Hall remained Widener’s home until his death in 1915.

Peter and Hannah Widener had three sons – Harry (1859-1874), Joseph Early (1871-1943), and George Dunton (1861-1912). George, along with his son, the businessman and bibliophile Peter Arrell Brown Widener (undated photo)

337 A CELADON WHITE JADE HORSE WITH ZITAN ROSEWOOD RETICULATED STAND, QIANLONG PERIOD, 18TH CENTURY ĹżĹœĹšĆ€ŸŲšĹ”Ä?ýĝĽŌƀŔ8Ĺś ĸć A ďŹ nely carved recumbent horse shown with its head turned sharply over the left shoulder and four legs with hooves tucked under the belly, almond-shaped eyes, nostril and mouth softly moulded with ears standing upright, ďŹ ne striations carved for both the mane and the tail, a package of two scrolls bound tightly with owing ribbons and strapped around the middle torso, with reticulated rosewood stand of rolling waves (without stand) length 3.5" — 8.9 cm. $20,000—30,000

Provenance: From the collection of P. A. B. Widener, and thence by descent (according to dealer’s card) From an important private collection, Canada §£Â‚W v¤¸P. A. B. "Š€ª¯ Note: This rare example of a celadon horse carving is notable for its size as a piece of Qianlong celadon white jade. The colour retains a light green complexion in an overall white base. Each of the four legs are naturalistically rendered, gently sunken into the horse’s ank and belly, while still featuring prominent haunches and shoulders. The inclusion of a set of scrolls complete with owing ribbon binding demonstrates the artist’s unrestricted agency in carving large amounts of quality jade from the piece. In addition, the piece has survived with an old rosewood stand, crafted speciďŹ cally to snugly support the horse’s recumbent form as rolling waves swell from a narrow waist. This type of jade horse carving was popularized beginning in the Song dynasty, standardized with four legs folded underneath the body and the head directly rearfacing. Two Song dynasty examples of this form are published in Chinese Jade Animals ”–£La‹@Â’1997, Hong Kong Museum of Art ”o “›ˆ’ plates 125 and 127, pages 144-147. However, the addition of scrolls strapped to the back is less commonly found. The scrolls may represent the ďŹ rst Buddhist sutras to enter China, a narrative taking place in the Han dynasty. In compliance with Emperor Han Mingdi’s ™ vision of the Buddha, Buddhist monks were escorted from India into China, along with a white horse upon which the holy scriptures were mounted. The emperor subsequently commissioned the construction of the White Horse Temple SrF¸in the capital of Luoyang, which still stands today. However, together with the rosewood stand of swirling waves, this piece may be a reference to an older narrative revolving around a legendary horse sent by sea as a Mandate from Heaven. Carrying divine manuscripts and travelling via maritime route, the horse was sent to deliver a heavenly mandate to the emperor for a fair and virtuous rule, a testament to the emperor’s direct connection to heaven and unquestionable legitimacy of power. Another example of a jade horse carved complete with books and waves can be found in the Beijing Palace Museum 1995 publication on jade ”‹!7b8Â’¸plate 90, page 110. The scroll binding is crafted using a classical Chinese style of owing ribbons. The mane is carved with ďŹ ne, uniform striations neatly separated into bunches with a gentle ridge to delineate the crest of the neck. The tail is carved in a similar fashion, tucked neatly underneath the horse’s rear. Finer hairs line the bottom of the eye as bottom lashes. Another example of a celadon white jade recumbent horse was sold at Sotheby’s Hong Kong, October 8, 2010, lot 2798.
