NEWS LETTER VOLUME-2

We the Activity Committee of the English Department have made an attempt to see that the objectives of the quality assurance and accreditation standards are met. We decided to come up with several clubs and activities in this semester.

Reports

Conversation Club T

o begin with the Conversation club; our students have played the dominant and voluntary role in conducting meetings by their own peer group that targets the English language learning for the beginners. The idea behind is to provide the students a comfortable platform where they can speak freely and confidently by sharing their views with the help of the topics suggested by themselves (students). As a result, we observed, this has provided them an opportunity to overcome the hesitations to use a new language. Most remarkable event was that the students decided to have a special meeting and they took the initiatives in organizing it. We were so delighted to have the guests of honor, Dr. Fawziah Harshan and Ms. Sarah Alghanem attending it and sharing their knowledge and experiences with students. The topics they preferred to discuss were: Studying abroad and How to deal with the researches for the higher studies in future. The conversation club was proved to be a success as the students have tried to learn the necessary skills that are needed for them to mold themselves for the challenging world of English.

“A breathtaking display of magnificent talent” Dr. Fawziah.

the Theatre club. This is embellished by our students of whom we are so proud of, who projected their unique skills of acting, speaking their dialogues in a more fancy and impressive way. The most remarkable and astonishing part among them was that they said their dialogues on the spot unlike the performance we had before. We had two plays performed by our students: the one being Shakespeare’s ‘Othello’ and the second, Agatha Christie’s ‘The Thirteen Problems’. It sounded so realistic and viable that it earned the huge audiences who were thrilled to attend the theatrical performances. Consequently, the burst of applause received, made the whole occasion charmed with wonderful memories to cherish forever in future. It was no wonder that the head of the Department, Dr. Fawziah made the most memorable comment for the wonderful performance of our students by uttering these magnifying words: “A breathtaking display of magnificent talent”. These words were circulated among the student’s actors who were filled with immense joy and celebrated on achieving this success. One could really not judge how the things turned out to be with the praises and appreciations received from the teachers who attended the show and the students who witnessed it. The activity was supervised by Ms. Noor Fathima.

Mir Osman Ali Khan, The Seventh Nizam of Hyderabad.

It is the seventh oldest in the Country and third oldest in South India. Though the need for the University for the Hyderabad State was felt, both by the intelligentia and the people for a long time, the initiative came from a civil servant, Sir Akbar Hydari, who was then the Home Secretary to the State Government. Sir Hydari, in a memorandum to the Education Minister in Early 1917, emphasized the need to establish a University of Hyderabad with 'Urdu' as the medium of instruction "as it is the language of the widest currency in India, official language of the State, and it is a language which is understood by a vast majority of the population of the State." He believed that higher education must have its foundations deep in national consciousness. The university was to be designed by the Chief Architect Nawab Sarwar Jung.

The birth of Osmania University almost coincided with the birth of a new order arising from the ashes of the First World War. Its origin was basically patriotic. It was a revolt against the supremacy of the foreign language in India. On the revolutionary experiment of using a regional language as a medium of higher education the Nobel Laureate poet, Rabindranth The Firman of 26 April 1917, detailed the 'Mission' and Tagore, observed: "I have long been waiting for the 'Objectives' of the University to be that: ‘the ancient and day when, freed from the shackles of a foreign modern, the oriental and occidental arts and sciences are language, our education becomes naturally accessible synthesized in such a manner that the defects of the present to all our people. It is centered on being self reliance and going ahead with determination to achieve the set goal. Thus helping you to evaluate yourself and check your strength and weakness.

Differentiate between language learning and academic studies work on learning English language far away from your studies. Being an English student at university doesn't mean that you are going to learn English. Keep in mind that you are studying English to learn about the language not learning the language itself. Your studies will improve your academic writing in some way but it will not for improve you in speaking, listening and reading.

Build a strong basement the first year is the basement for your GPA and your language. Putting a lot of effort to get high marks and to use the language effectively means that you are building this basement strongly. So whenever you build a strong basement, you will manage to complete the other years easily because you have are ready experienced how things go one, how to recover mistakes, what are your duties and how to tackle with them.

Know your way of learning Try to find out in which way you prefer learning: Is it through listening, watching or writing? For example, if you know that you are a good listener, I advise you to study by focusing and listening carefully to your lectures and learn the language by listening to different kinds of audios you are interested in. On the other hand, if you learn through writing, I advise you to take notes during lectures and to improve your language keep a daily diary with you in order to use your language daily.

Enjoy last but not least, I advise you to take things easily by enjoying and loving the idea that you are learning a language itself and learning about its system, history, culture and much more. Try to participate in activities because they are extremely enjoyable in which they lighten the atmosphere for you far away from your studies and you get the chance to improve personally and socially. Finally, I hope that I have summarized some of the key hints to be a successful English student effectively and in a way that will help you all. The four years at collage shall pass away… ONLY your successful status, achievements, GPA, language you learned and the sweetest memories shall remain forever so work hard and keep pushing yourself until you achieve the goal.

Using Technology to Learn or Teach English by, Ms. Hannan AlShehab

G

lobalization changed many things in our life, such as the way of learning and communicating. Today, the practice of using smart phones is famous in all age stages. In the 21st century, most people are exposed to communicating and being in contact through using social media and applications that facilitate their life in many ways, for instance, free applications that enable voice and video calls. Not only that, technology has had a great impact on education for many years. The traditional methods for learning are no longer admired by the new generation because today's children open their eyes in the technology era. They are used to seeing the flash of the camera, using their fingers to touch the screen of the smart devices since they are born. In addition, colorful pictures and creative videos motivate them. They can learn many things from the multimedia sources that are available on the Internet. Indeed, using smart devices requires much effort from the parents in monitor their kids’. From my point of view, technology suits all the ages as there are a great variety of websites and programs. There are websites for different services such as translation, finding a job, teaching some languages, etc. In addition, still others offer entertainment and communication.

No one can ignore the improvements in teaching and learning processes and strategies because of using the internet. Teachers and learners can enjoy their time by incorporating technology at the same time, doing their work. Most of the courses need to use technology to make them easier, and more enjoyable for the students. CALL (Computer Assisted Language Learning) is one of the subjects that highlight using technology in learning. It is stated that researchers like Warschauer and Kern (2000) have argued for some time that “CALL came of age when it started to enable people to do the things they wanted to do with language through technology, enabling language activities to be social and observable” (Thomas, Reinders, &Warschauer, 2012. P.56).

HOW CAN TECHNOLOGY FACILITATE OUR LEARNING OR TEACHING ENGLISH

29

NEWS LETTER VOLUME-2

General It is observed that using computers helps the teachers and students in improving writing in many ways such as:

1- Select appropriate writing texts as models 2- Choose CALL programs that teach the genres as well as linguistic knowledge and strategies. 3- Teach learners how to benefit in terms of interactive help and feedback when using computers 4- Create learners’ opportunities to expand knowledge of English through writing and to write for a real audience 5- Include explicit evaluation 6- Help learners develop their writing strategies. (Thomas, Reinders, &Warschauer, 2012) (Thomas, Reinders, &Warschauer, 2012)

Furthermore, using the internet can meet all the learners’ styles such as visual, auditory, and kinesthetic. It is stated that success in listening to the computer is dependent on the design of the task in terms of catering to individual learner differences, including learning styles and preferred learning modes (Levy &Stockwell, 2013). From my experience of teaching a CALL course in the summer semester for level 7 students, I was amazed by the facility that technology offers. I used some useful websites such as Macmillandictionary.com, Merriam Webster dictionary. These two dictionaries are effective to expand the knowledge of the teachers and the students in learning English vocabulary, synonyms, antonyms, and pronunciation. Also, I advised the students to use Grammarly.com. This software program is helpful to check the grammar and spelling of the students’ work. They can edit their work before submitting it. Additionally, this program has features that can be added on the smart phone keyboard to ease the editing. Besides using the PowerPoint presentations and word processor for the assignments, the hot potato software program is used as an effective tool to create quizzes and tests. Students were active and enthusiastic, they created wonderful tutorial videos and published them as web links after that they submitted them via the blackboard. The students presented creative tutorial videos by using the screen-recording feature, the recording can be downloaded as a program or can be used through PowerPoint processor. Moreover, the students enriched their classmates’ knowledge and mine about effective applications that can be downloaded on smart phones, for example: Camply, Doulingo, Goodreads, Wordhippo, BBC, Shmoop. All these platforms help to improve learners’ English language. To use some of them registration is needed and using them continuously is the key to success. I am thankful for programmers who help us to deal with these applications easily. Also, many thanks for Sattam bin Abdulaziz University that allows us to use Blackboard to deliver our courses and facilitate communication with the students. In fact, using Blackboard opens my horizon about e-learning and e-teaching. I communicate, upload files, add useful materials, web links, and send students’ grades.

NO TIME TO STAND AND STARE What is this life if, full of care, We have no time to stand and stare

A POOR LIFE THIS IS IF, FULL OF CARE, WE HAVE NO TIME TO STAND AND STARE.

31 NEWS LETTER VOLUME-2

H ow true are these lines written by W.H Davies which aptly depicts present modern age, age of advance technology, Maddening crowd rushing through their life. In this tech-savvy world having an updated mobile loaded with all its latest applications has become a status symbol. Youngsters are fascinated by the virtual world created by mobile phones. With mobile phones we can make a video call, view channels, take photos and much more. This is indeed really exciting and thrilling. It adds to the glamorous life style. Mobile phones have brought the world so closer that it has really shrunk into a global village it is one of the most important inventions as it connects us with the world. But this very important means of connection is turning out to disconnect us from the family, society, relationships and everything around us. We are doing considerable damage to ourselves by jumping into this maddening race of mobile fashion. It doesn’t means I am against it because Mobile phones are yet another milestone invention, as we know all inventions are done with a sole aim of betterment of mankind but then it depends on how we use it. Anything which is over used can turn the boon into bane so we have to be careful about it. It is left up to us to make optimal use of the gadget and not to succumb to the instant gratification it gives.

General With the advent of advanced technology, growing use of mobile phones and other gadgets are considerably harming the younger generation. Students are developing a strong connection with their mobile phones, which is leading to a massive loss in their concentration and time spent in studies. Mobile phones have become an extension of our body nowadays. There were days when mobiles were used just to contact people. Whereas now, life seems incomplete without these very much revered non-beings! As someone said a smart phone is an addictive device which traps a soul into a lifeless planet full of lives. We are so addicted to the cell phones that we are missing out on our family time. All the time we spend on phones is a heavy price to pay. Over using cell phones is tremendously affecting our social behavior. We are missing out on our manners and etiquette. When you are with someone and he/she is constantly checking, scrolling, texting, or engaged with the cell phone in his/ her hand, it gives a feeling like you are not really fully with that person. It is a very rude behavior and damages our relationship. Cell phones are the latest invention in rudeness. We hardly converse now a days I am afraid a day will come when we may not speak at all but text messages even to the person sitting next to us. Imagine a society where everyone is mute just texting no words spoken. Gone are the days of family gathering sitting relax and chatting with each other sharing happiness and sorrow alike but now the scene is different we still have family gathering without the spirit of togetherness. Everyone is too busy to sit and listen. Spending time with someone is a thing of past. You are labeled old fashioned. I still remember how we use to play games in the evening in the courtyard of our house after we are done with our school work but now things have changed instead of running and playing in the park which helps in physical, mental, social and emotional development. Kids are busy playing Temple run online. Don't allow gadgets to replace games. We are so engrossed in our phones that we hardly raise our head to see around, noticed beautiful things that god has created for us. We're living in an era where capturing moments using our phones is more important than actually living these moments with whoever is beside us. Your cell phone has already replaced your camera, your calendar and your alarm clock. Don't let it replace your family.

One fine evening pondering on these facts a funny idea crossed my mind with this addiction to cell phones we may end up standing at the other side of the road forgetting to cross it or a morsel of food in our hand forgetting to put in our mouth, mothers forgetting their children on the roads to attend their Whatsaap messages, people falling to their death taking selfies unmindful of the dangers around. we may need Mobile help forces like police officers, teachers engineers etc who will assist us in our daily choirs, help us in crossing the road , or put the food in our mouth and remind us to swallow. Remind us to carry our children back. etc Though it sounds funny but it calls for introspection and serious thinking. It’s high time we limit our selves and learn to use technology as it is meant to be if not we may end up. No time to stand and stare No time to stand No time...

A poor life this is if, full of care, We have no time to stand and stare.

Who Am I...? by: Dr. Shifan Thaha

There is an identity crisis prevalent in the so called" Globalized society". Aping the west has become the fashion of the day. Anything that contradicts the western culture is considered outlandish and weird. This diversion towards the road, leading to nowhere, is not only appalling but saddening. Hence, it is time to ponder over the reasons for this diversion . Is it: purely blind admiration for the west? Roots too weak to withstand gusty winds of change? Hollowness created by Technology?...Social acceptability?? The concept of " identity diffusion" can be substantiated by research conducted by clinical psychologists. The developmental psychologist Erik Erikson coined the term "Identity Crisis" .It is zxconsidered to be the fifth developmental stage of an individual's mind and occurs during the period of adolescence. This stage is also considered as the "stormy stage" . This chaotic stage has been beautifully envisioned in the Poem ‘IdentIty Crisis' by Dee Daffodil. I've been feeling slightly odd lately And I wish that I could say That I'll be over it quite quickly But I think I've lost my way...

NEWS LETTER VOLUME-2

Unfortunately, Identity crisis is on the rise today. The need of the hour is to tame the rebellious teenagers and make them realize that they are the custodians of the rich culture ,passed down for generations .Culture gives us our identity and retaining the culture is 'identity achievement'. Therefore, we should have a strong commitment towards our culture and be proud of it. The importance of clinging on to one’s cultural roots is summed up in the intriguing lines written by an anonymous poet. "So we now know That no one ever really dies Even as their soul touches the skies As long as their story goes But when their story dies And they still there lie No one ever knows."

Kate Chopin was known for depicting the lives of women, particularly as they attempted to create individual identities. gets on the train to go home, wishing it would never stop, not wanting to return home and back to the reality of her life. She feels ''a powerful longing that the cable car would never stop anywhere, but go on and on with her forever,'' because she knows when she returns home she has to go back to being the dutiful mother and wife, the ''little'' Mrs. Sommers.

Literature

Mrs. Sommers is the main character in the story where she represents a round character with multiple traits. Throughout the story Kate Chopin beautifully portrays a woman caught between different roles. before buying the stockings she was the one who knew the value of bargain, she is very caring and thinks about spending the money on her children but after buying the stockings she becomes self centered wouldn’t mind a difference of a dollar or two in a price as long as she got what she desired. She forgets about the family needs and spends money for her own. This story can be said as an effective representation of realism depiction. The story is based on reality and truth and focuses on the lives of ordinary people. Everything in the story could happen to anyone in the world it show the common activities of normal people. The story gives a careful description of everyday life and also focuses on social issues of real life situations. She is a perfect example of how humans are tempted by material gain, “the life of luxury”, and the vicious way society judges things (or people). Mrs. Sommers is this innocent family lady. However, the minute she buys the silk stockings is the minute she becomes a different Mrs. Sommers. All of a sudden everything she has in not good enough, she looks at her shopping bag as “shabby” and “old”. Her parcel is “very small”. At this point, she wants more. She begins to think without reason, and loses her sense of responsibility when she puts the stockings on in the ladies room. Mrs. Sommers is “not going through any acute mental process or reasoning with herself”, she is “not thinking at all” at this point. Mrs. Sommers’s mind is not working like it used to at the beginning. All of a sudden nothing is too expensive, she eats the expensive restaurant, buys shoes, gloves, and magazines “such as she had become accustomed to read in those days”. In buying the silk stockings, Mrs. Sommers sets out to self-identify. She is as human as anyone else, and therefore as prone to desiring finer things. She ceases to think logically, and in so doing, discovers and unleashes her own identity. That same identity is the one she put away for marriage, the one she put away in order to conform to societal standards. This, however, does not mean that Mrs. Sommers loves her children any less. Instead, she is expressing a desire for freedom .This is one of the many reasons this story, along with many of Chopin’s works, continues to enjoy popularity.

CERTAINTY

By: Aljohara S. Alqahtani

What I know for certain is that nothing is certain. The sky might not be blue, but several colors we cannot see nor name. The earth might not be lonely, for there are other planets waiting to be called home. Heartache might not be about falling apart, but coming back together. A faded picture might not mean a forgotten memory, but a cherished one, always remembered. A mistake might not be the end, but the beginning for a better life. A broken compass might not mean being lost, but a new adventure to embark on. There is nothing certain in this world— even the stars sigh as they whirl, the snow hesitates before melting away, the mist holds its breath, the clouds could gather but not rain at all. Certainty is a game that you play to lose. Nothing is certain, and that is beautiful, it can ache and soothe, a vast landscape you can breathe in, instead of a hole squeezed against a door. But if there is one thing that I am certain of is: That a heart that’s been broken will only grow back stronger, and eventually, truthfully, emerge victorious.

It was summer in the land all over The land cracked with pain For mother earth grieves over the wounds That the sun’s whip Lashes have caused

Life begs for relief, a sign of hope That a hero may rise to rid them of this tyrant Far above a small cloud hears the pleas, He thinks what can I do being a small cloud

By Ms. Sameena Khan

A lightening thought flashed across his mind “I Know” he said, as he quickly raced towards his kind All the clouds then stood united, for “STRENGTH LIES IN UNITY” They all together stretched across the sky A grey garment the sky now wore Quicker than the eye could see A sacred sabre like thunderbolt Flashed across the sky Life’s prayers have been answered The little cloud thus spoke “Mighty sun your time of tyranny is now at it’s’ end” Silvery as his voice was it echoed like a thousand drums The cowering sun was thus warned So he hid behind the clouds and ran Like a little child, only to shine another day and just then the cloud thundered “Let the arrows of life be released” A soothing balm filled the land Healing mother earth’s painful wounds The end of the summer’s torture was thus in this way, came to an end. 38 NEWS LETTER VOLUME-2
