FINAL YEAR PROJECT

Dr. Maroun El Daccache

REACTIVATION OF BASTA SCHOOL EXPANSION COMPLEX BEIRUT, LEBANON The Basta area is a prime example of the urban decay of public space, due to its abundance of historic structures and its strategic location in the physical center of Beirut. In the Past, the Basta main road served as key commercial line housing several side-souks and following a railway route cutting directly into the Beirut City center. Firstly, the excessive demolition of the old buildings with commercial ground floors in the area resulted in weakening the commercial strip by changing the public shops into private piloti parkings. Secondly, the construction of the Basta bridges overlaying the topography rather than following it, made the areas under them a “pass-through rather than a destination. This is in addition to being physically isolated from the rest of the city after the introduction of the two highways Saleem Salam and Bchara El Khoury. The aim is to reactivate of the Basta Area as a city hub rather than a secluded politically driven community; this is through the treatment of the Urban Edge caused by the Saleem Salam Highway. To do so the project aims to continue the existing urban parkour and giving it a public endpoint being the Public Library. This in addition to doubling as an extension to the historic School found at the end of this parkour, allowing the Project to intervene on both Private and Public levels in the urban fabric. Architecturally, the project will reintroduce the idea of the courtyard but in a Vertical manner rather than horizantal, following the precendant of the surrounding buildings that have a smaller footprint area but a larger built up one.

The project covers the relationship between an increasingly urbanized city and the infrastructure overlayed on to it as if it were a second layer, either manifesting as a large urban edge or as a skip-over what lies underneath. Two instances of this phenomenon are found in an interior are of Beirut known as “Basta”. The first Instance being the Salim Salam Highway that was built in the early 2000’s, which effectively seperated Basta from its neighboring distrcits, causing social and architectural rifts in the city. The second instance being the Basta Bridge which was built over the original Basta streets intersction. The makeshift Forum which included stores and a Mosque arenow driven over by a steel bridge that was originally intended to be a temporary traffic relief but has ever since stuck.

INITIAL SCHEMATIC MASSING: A SCHOOL EXPANSION

Following an urban parkour of old traditional style homes and villas left over from the french maandate and ottoman times trough pedestrian stairs within the Basta area, we are lead to a clearing in the city fabric which exhibits all the problems set forth by Overlaying infrastrcuture, the victim of this urban pocket being mishandled are the ottoman style school and the largely unacknowledged public park in this urban pocket.

The Urban Parkour already existent within the Basta area is continued by means of a bridge structure that bridge structure that penetrates the project to allow the pedestrian to follow the urban parkour and reach one of the two public functions, the Library or the Roof top Cafe.

Continuing the idea of having internal courtyards, and in an effort to increase the relationship of the project with the adjacent garden, but without it being a distraction to the students, so the idea of a mosharbiya is adopted to cover the public spaces within the building. The double skin is given a hierarchy of layers to achieve a given ambience in the spaces covered by it.

The interior elevation reveals that the Mousharabiya inspired shading system only follows the areas considered public or semi-public within the project and concrete only covers the actual functions. The courtyard elevation on the other hand does not hide the functions or the public space. The faรงade is dictated by the necessity of structure. Openings are made wherever possible. Resulting in a play of levels in elevation between the public and private functions.

VERTICAL CAFETRIA FACADE

In terms of the cafeteria, since it is an introverted structure hidden away from the street views, the facade was made was yielded as an abstraction of teh vertical elements of the surrounding high rises, so that even if the building is restricted by the height of the bridge it needs to connect with, the facade will give it a sense of verticality.

URBAN

INTERVENTION

The Area of Ouzai was subdivided into 5 parts to be analyzed in terms of Urban Analysis. Typologies of space were studied in depth. A master plan was then proposed for severa different districts within the area according to need. Urban Interventions such as a walkway and school district were also proposed as part of the urban analysis.

IN THE SITE THERE IS A REPETETIVE VERTICAL ELEMENT THAT HOUSES THE VERTICA CIRCULATION AND USES IT AS A FRONT FOR THE BUILDING

TRIAL 1 INCORPORATES THE VERTICAL ELEMENT. TRIAL 2 EXTRUDES THE VERTICAL ELEMENT INTO A HORIZANTAL HALL (CIRCULATION I STILL THE FUNCTION) Both Trials did not yield favorable results regarding the interaction of the building with the site. TRIAL 3 ICORPORATES THE CIRCULATION HALL INCORPORATES THE “PLUGGING IN” OF FUNCTIONS INTO THE HALL ABIDES BY THE LEVELS SPECIFIED BY THE SITE.
