Catherine Anderson of
London Park Stud How do you feel horses in Western Australia compare to Australia and international breeding programs? If we are talking welsh breeding, compared to the rest of Australia and international breeding programs, then Id have to say I think the standard in Western Australia is very good, We have a lot of studs in WA, with imported stallions and mares along with the quality Australian bred ponies. As far as Being compared to the international communities, I think we are at a disadvantage, Breeding ponies that orientate in Wales and with the high cost of importing, We just do not have the amount of bloodlines and ponies to pick from when breeding. Our climate and terrain is also very different to Wales and without using import breeding we can loses the welsh type and movement. Saying all of this, they may not be huge numbers, we certainly do have top quality ponies here, Equal to that, that you would find at the Royal Welsh in Wales. Page 9
Western Australia breeding has changed and developed over the years, in your experience do you find we have what it takes to step up and have our horses compete at major events such as the Olympics and world cup championships ? Yes in my experience, I certainly do think Australian breeders have what it takes to produce Olympic and world cup horses What is the process like importing horses to Australia? The process of importing ponies is a long one! Finding what you are after in a country on the other side of the world processes its own problems! You find the pony with the type, movement and breeding you are after, you then need to pay, setting up for international banking, exchange rates etc. Once you have paid, you then need to sort out a vet, as before the ponies can go into Quarantine
they must have 2 flu vacs. They need to be done 28 days apart and you need another 28 days after the last flu shot before they can start Quarantine. In this time you also need to have a vet check done ( for insurance, as you can not fly a pony without it being insured ) plus a list of other swabs and blood test that need to come back negative so as Australia will allow the pony to be imported. It is a good idea to have a signed contract with the person you buy from to include, you will get your money back if for any reason the pony gives a positive test and can not be imported. Once this is all done, you then need to sort out transport to the Quarantine center. The Ponies need to do 3 weeks Quarantine,
the flight takes about 2 days and then you have a further 3 weeks Quarantine in Australia before the ponies will be released. Then.. its all yours!

What made you start to breed, how was your stud farm founded? The Welsh Ponies of Cob Type was always what I had my heart set on. Being from the UK I knew of them, just had never seen any
in Australia, then one day out of the blue I saw a stud selling a few of them, I phoned up that day and was out looking that afternoon‌ I saw a Filly that matched what I had been after all those years so.. Then I started breeding them, as there wasn’t many around and only having only one pony to love is never enough! What do you feel are the most important aspects to running a successful Stud farm? Having the right mares is so important for running a successful stud, Top quality mares with an even better stallion put over them! being one of the most known and successful
Feature London Park Stud
stud farms in WA, seeing your progeny go from a foal on the ground to competing which horse would you say is the most significant to your stud ? So far, id have to say our 2010 filly London Park Twilight has been the most significant for the stud. She never fails to surprise me, always stepping up to the mark no matter what I ask of her. She has been a constant show winner! With continual changes in modern horse breeding has your breeding choices changed over the years of running the stud and breeding each horse? Oh yes definitely! My thoughts and views on the stud and its breeding have changed a lot over the years. What I looked for when breeding the Welsh C’s at the start is very different to what id look for now and I hope they will carry on!! Moving forward and improving what you can as you go along. I will never know it all and im sure there will always be plenty of room for new thoughts and ideas!
been possible if it wasn’t for such a understanding husband, Who over the years has listened to my thoughts and plans, smiled at me and said sounds like a great idea! Yes has definitely been worth it!! Apart from the many friendships ive made and the amount ive learnt over the years, I love the Welsh Section C’s, I love showing them, working with them, looking after them, breeding them, Riding and driving them, watching them running out in the paddocks and seeing there little faces over the stable door ! Plus along with a my very special mare Swift and the fillies I have also be given the chance to buy our Beautiful Import stallion Newgap Tom Jones and the soon arrival of our new import filly Fronarth Jessie J, Both will improve the stud even further! The thought of buying and
Did you decided to become a known stud farm or did it just happen? I wouldn’t say I decided to become a known stud as such and yes it has been hard work along the way plus a great deal of expense! Its been a huge learning curve and a lot of fun! I must add… None of any of this would have Page 11
Flying a pony over from the UK when I first started breeding the section C’s was just unthinkable and would never happen! Yes…. Definitely worth it! What qualities do you look for in a mare, and what do you class as being the most important aspects when looking for a breeding mare? The Qualities I look for in a mare for breeding the Welsh C’s, Well They must have correct type, They must be able to move well, with a pony head, big eyes, they must be clean through the gullet, have a good shoulder, good depth of rib and flank, nice big hind quarters, that don’t slop away, nice high tail set, Good length of rein, must be a top quality pony and of course must have a lovely
The first foal we had born was a wonderful experience, I must say we have been very lucky with out breeding, No problems to date with getting mares in foal or delivering of foals. Most of our mares have read the book and followed the rules the others ignore everything, showed no signs of foaling and we wake up in the morning to find a new born foal has arrived.
nature! What do you have in mind when you cover a stallion to mare, do you have expectations for the foal? And what happens if a foal does not make the cut for the name of your stud to be attached to it for the rest of its life? Ummm Well… when I cover the mare, I hope to get a foal that is like the mare with the added qualities from the stallion… so an improved version. Each time I breed I hope to be improving on the mare. Not all mares ( no matter how good they may look) ) will be good producers of stock. You may also get a mare that’s not much to look at, but produces very well! It’s why your breeding mares are so important and valuable to a stud. I don’t have any foals that ive bred that don’t have our stud name attached to. Not all will make show ring prospects, and not all will
future breeding stock but that’s not all im looking for, the wonderful thing about the Welsh ponies of Cob Type is there ability to be such fantastic family all rounder ponies! Be it, harness, jumping, dressage, hunter classes, pony club, they have the right natures for Children to ride and handle with the size and build to carry adults, with the extra go when asked! When your first foal was born at your stud farm, what was this experience like?
If you could give advice to any future breeder what would it be? If I could give advice to a future breeder, I guess, Id say Always keep your goals in mind, Keep an open mind, learn as much as you can, ask questions, be flexible in your thinking, Find out the why’s of things, Keep your end goal in mind and work towards it. And I guess last of all, Enjoy what you are doing, bring another animal into the world, who will have its ups and downs and a story all of its own tell one day, Breeding is a very special lifestyle and can be very rewarding.

Trapalanda
Dai-Wynne AGE: 13yrs BREED: Welsh Sec D Cob DAM: Hazelmere Ulicia SIRE: Synod Aristocrat (UK IMP) HEIGHT: 15 HH REGISTRATIONS: (OPTIONAL) WPCSOA Dai-Wynne is a gentle giant he loves a scratch and a cuddle and any work to be done in his paddock and he is right there helping you out. He loves his foals and enjoys their company if they happen to be naughty and pay him a visit. Any float that arrives on the property he believes belongs to him. Or more like who is visiting should belong to him. He is very placid and easy to handle he passes this nature onto his babies. Under saddle he is like sitting in a big soft rocking chair. I remember that on one of our outings after sitting in the saddle for a couple of hours I was stuck , due to the width of him versus me, the only way off him was to slide down his neck. Sadly I don’t get the time to ride him any more to many other commit-
ment’s. He loves being fat and happy with his mares. He occasionally puts in the odd appearance at a breed show every now and then. My boy to me is my pride and joy he stands out in a crowd and certainly turn heads and he has lots of fans where ever he goes. He always gets plenty of compliments from the UK judges as he is equal to the type and quality that are shown in the UK. Dai-Wynne has won to many supreme’s, Trophies and Medals to mention some of his achievements have been – WA All Welsh Supreme Sec D 3 yrs in a row and un-defeated WA runner up Supreme of Show Dai-Wynne has won the WA sire ratings for the last 5 years and the year of 2008-2009 in Victoria. Dai-Wynne is by Synod Aristocrat (UK IMP) who has certainly made his mark on his progeny in Australia. His Dam is Hazelemere Ulicia who’s sire is Trevallion Comets Last (UK IMP) His pedigree includes the following
famous ponies Llanarth Jack Flash, Brynmor Welsh Magic, Derwen Telynor. Pentre Eiddwens Comet, Synod William, Nebo Black Magic and many more UK bloodlines. Dai-Wynne stands out as he is rather a bold liver chestnut with four white stockings and a blaze. Very solid and compact with a look at me presence about him. His stock are out competing and winning supreme’s of their own which is a great attribute to any stallion owner. Most Recently Trapalanda Kylie owned by Midge Boag won Supreme Ridden Cob at the WA All Welsh Show.He has stock in most states of Australia including New Zealand that are all out competing and winning supreme’s of their own. I am extremely happy with the progeny he has produced so far and we are continually finding that we can’t keep up with demand each year. Which is a wonderful reflection of this lovely stallion. We are looking forward to his future foals from our import mares.

Grey: 16.1 hh DOB: 18/12/2002 Sire: Gotico Park Escamillo Dam: Blackford Rici AHAA: reg: SO 1803 SSB: 023AS382 APTO Alfonso is a truly outstanding stallion and a stunning example of the Andalusian breed with good manners and fantastic temperament with a “nothing bothers me” attitude. With correct conformation, he is well balanced and absolutely straight. He is powerful with excellent extensions and hock action with a stunning uphill canter.
Alfonso has been approved for breeding by ANCEE, classified as “APTO”. He was chosen as the our foundation stallion for his top blood lines including Military, Terry and Alvar Domecq. His Great Grand Sire competing in England at the Wembley Stadium in open dressage competition. Alfonso started his ridden career in 2010 and won Summer Series 2010 Champion Official Preliminary. He went on to win Champion Ridden Andalusian in 2010 and 2011 over more experienced and decorated horse at the State Champion Show, including the highest dressage score of the day in all levels. He has achieved ‘’Medium’’ under a successful FEI rider and trainer and
has a huge future ahead of him. His young progeny are doing well under saddle and in hand. At the 2012 National Andalusian show, we entered two of his fillies who won Junior National Spanish Female (Equus Lodge Olivia) and Reserve National Spanish Female (Equus Lodge Oihana). In addition, Equus Lodge Olivia was National Champion Junior Spanish Andalusian (over mares, geldings and entires). In 2011, Alfonso’s daughter (Equus lodge Niceta ), aged three was placed Reserve Champion at the Perth Royal Show over much older and experienced Mares, Geldings and Stallions.
