Student: Bachelor of Tourism Management Xue Dong says the best thing about Waiariki is the environment; it’s like a second home country. “My tutors were friendly and receptive to any concerns raised due to my limited English. The international office was also excellent, always doing their best to help.” Beginning postgraduate study at Waiariki in February, Xue hopes to stay in Rotorua after she completes her Master of Management because “tourism’s my major and Rotorua is New Zealand’s top tourism city.”

It made me realise I needed to ‘polish’ my knowledge if I wanted to specialise in this area. Eligibility for Health Services Most international students are not entitled to subsidised health services. If you receive medical treatment while in New Zealand, you may be required to pay the full costs of that treatment. More details are available through the Ministry of Health at www.health.govt.nz. Accident Insurance The Accident Compensation Corporation (ACC) provides accident insurance for all temporary visitors to New Zealand but you may still be required to pay for all other medical and related costs. More details are available through the ACC website at www.acc.co.nz. Medical and Travel Insurance International students must have appropriate and current medical and travel insurance while in New Zealand. The cost of medical and travel insurance is $578 per year. Accommodation Waiariki can help arrange student accommodation while you are here for your studies. Hall of Residence Tangatarua Hall of Residence, owned by Waiariki, is located next to the Waiariki campus in Rotorua. Situated in a park-like setting with mature landscaping and open spaces, the hall offers students an attractive and affordable residence within walking distance to their courses on Mokoia Campus. The hall is open to all Waiariki students. Homestay We recommend the homestay option, especially for students studying English so they will have an opportunity to practice their English in their living situation. A family environment can also ease the adjustment of living in a new country with different food, language and customs. Students should commit to staying at least one month with the homestay family, as it takes some time for you to adjust to life in Rotorua, and for you and your family to adjust to each other. The homestay fee of NZ$195 per week is all inclusive of your own room, most meals, power and laundry, and may include internet access. Flatting (Sharing a House) In New Zealand the word “flatting” means to rent a house with others (“flatmates”) who may be students or friends. You and your flatmates will be responsible for securing your own furniture, plus sharing the cost of power, water, telephone and other bills, plus cooking your own meals, doing your own laundry and maintaining the rental agreement. Approximate costs in New Zealand dollars for three people renting a flat: Item
Monthly
Each Person (Per Month)
Rent $1,300 Power $170
$433 $57
Telephone (non-mobile)
$40
$13 (toll calls extra)
Gas heating
$80
$27
Groceries $750
$250
Totals: $2,340
$780
This equates to approximately NZ$195 per person per week. You will need to make sure that you have allowed enough money for buying furniture, bedding, cooking utensils and other household items. It can take some time to find a flat to rent and you may need to stay in temporary accommodation for the first two to four weeks after arriving in New Zealand. This is where the hall of residence, homestay or hostel options would be desirable. Flat Bond (Key Money) A bond is an initial payment required for security by landlords offering their premises for rental. Typically landlords will require you to pay in advance two weeks worth of rental fees for the bond, and two weeks of rental fees before you can move in. The bond is held by the Department of Building and Housing. When you move out of the flat and leave it in the same condition as when you entered it, you can apply to have your bond refunded.
