Find a reason to celebrate There’s a historical precedent for celebrating important events: Egyptians’ annual harvest fêtes and the fancy coronation ceremonies of the Middle Ages, for example. And no wonder: Commemorating moments big and small not only brings enjoyment, but the hoopla associated with them enables us to relive those happy experiences in years to come. More proof arrived in my inbox and on my voicemail after publishing our first party issue last year, with readers expressing a keen interest in learning about how fellow Bergenites celebrate. As a result, we decided to make it an annual “event.” Lest you get overwhelmed planning your own soirée, inspiration abounds in this issue. In “Pretty in Pink” on page 54, you’ll see how one creative mom turned her little girl’s love of Angelina Ballerina into the theme for her second birthday. And a Hillsdale dad was determined to make his daughter’s Sweet 16 oh-so-sweet (page 50). When Mother’s Day rolls around, your Mom will likely expect to be “remembered.” You know she deserves the very best, but of course, she’ll appreciate whatever kind gesture comes her way. That’s just Mom being Mom. So what can you give the woman who has given you everything? Try something simple that will touch her heart. Here are some ideas: Flower power—You can pick up an arrangement (roses, tulips and orchids are always a sure bet) at any neighborhood florist. Or try something different and bring her pretty petals to plant in the garden. With our proximity to Wall Street, it’s no surprise that six Bergen County towns have made Bloomberg’s list of America’s 100 Richest Places, a ranking based on household income of locations with at least 2,000 people. In fact, more than one-third of households that made the list were within 50 miles of New York City. Two teachers from the Academy of Holy Angels in Demarest received Teacher Seminar grants to study in the United Kingdom this summer. Hillsdale’s Gail Fair, chair of the AHA History Department, will participate in programs at the University of Edinburgh in Scotland. She also plans to visit Glenthroes High School, which participated in Skype sessions with her AP Government and Politics classes at AHA. Nancy Schneberger, an Allendale resident and chair of the AHA English Department, will attend programs at Oxford University. “Collegial sharing, lectures from experts in their fields, and full concentration on a topic on location is a most vibrant way of exploring a subject,” says Schneberger. “I look forward to sharing ideas with the teachers who have been selected from all over the United

20-minute sets on the White House lawn during the 138-year-old event. In a statement, the brothers say they played the gig to support Melania Trump’s pledge to help end cyberbullying. Many of the bands songs, including “Bruises,” are about anti-bullying.

Culinary Corner Familiar name returns Fans of the Hungry Peddler in Cresskill will be glad to hear it has reopened as The Peddler in a new location on Madison Ave. Escalating rent forced the local institution to close its original location on Knickerbocker Road in late January, where it had been for 36 years. All of the old familiar dishes and drinks are on the menu at the new location. “I went to the old Peddler often after work to unwind,” says Bruce Papenmeyer, 35, of Dumont. “The food is good but I love the friendships I’ve made there over the years, so I’m glad it’s back.” 44 E. An Asian sensation Craving Asian? Try House Malaysian, which recently opened in Cliffside Park. Smart parking Densely packed Jersey is known for our massive malls. But circling the mall for the umpteenth time trying to find a parking spot has got to be the worst part of shopping in our area. Thankfully, local malls are using new technology to make it easier. In 2011, The Westfield Garden State Plaza launched the Park Assist system, which uses red and green lights to guide drivers toward open spaces in two parking decks. And late last year, the mall added a reserved parking system where you can buy a premium spot using an app called MyPark. The cost for this convenience: $10 for four hours, and $5 for each additional hour. The reserved spaces are in parking deck B on level one next to the elevators, the parking lot under the movie theater wing and parking deck A next to Nordstrom. A metal barrier blocks each spot until its paid for through the app. Valet parking is still an option too, of course, but many people don’t want to give their keys to a stranger or wait for their car when they’re ready to go home, say mall developers. “One of the things people like about the app is that they are getting just as good a spot without having to valet,” says Howard Glazer, vice president of business development at MyPark. “And once they sign up, it becomes a really easy tool to use. You just tap a button.” So far, the Garden State Plaza is the only mall in the state using MyPark, but others are bound to follow with similar reserved parking systems. The Shops at Riverside, which is undergoing a major overhaul, says that their renovated covered parking garages will include a “state-of-the-art ‘park assist’ system.”

Country club living

Pack a bag and grab your mat because you’re headed to yoga class. But instead of a cramped studio, picture yourself doing downward dogs and warrior poses in a luxurious space at your local country club. No longer golf-only clubhouses for elite-class gentlemen, country clubs are undergoing a facelift. Take a look, for example, at what’s happening at the Edgewood Country Club in River Vale. While it still employs traditional membership requirements, rules of etiquette and dress codes, Edgewood nowadays is catering to broader interests. Of course hitting the links is the top activity, as it has been from the beginning, but it’s shaping up as full-service resorts for the entire family. The club’s new Resort Membership was created especially for families with young children whose top priorities go well beyond golf. Activities include yoga and water aerobics classes, tennis and swimming lessons, parties and other social events.

Hello Vino contains a vast database of wines and provides info on each, such as flavors and food pairings. If you’re in a rush, just enter the dishes on the menu and the app will select the best vino for you. Don’t just invite guests to your home—have them dress for the occasion. Theme parties are tons of fun, and Partyology allows you to search thousands of photos for inspiration. The Pinterest-style app even lets you contact event planners, bands and bartenders for more help. If you spent too much energy entertaining, cleaning up after a party can be a drag. Just relax, say the folks running Handy. This app will help you find professional cleaners in your area who are happy to deal with the aftermath of your bash. And don’t worry: All the cleaners found on this app have been prescreened and reviewed by nearby users.

IT’S A WILD WORLD

An African safari might not be in your budget this year, but you can still tour an animal kingdom at the Bergen County Zoo in Paramus. Beginning this month, all exhibits will be open and animals will be out and about for the summer, including all of the birds, tortoises and gators that hide during the cold winter months. So you won't find any lions, tigers and bears here, but oh my, there are plenty of other mammals, raptors and reptiles to entertain and educate visitors of all ages. The zoo also holds special programs throughout the year. From 10 a.m.–4:30 p.m. on May 6, visitors can enjoy Sheep Shearing Day. There will be activities for children, shearing demonstrations every 45 minutes and other events. The best part? The program is free with your paid admission to the zoo ($4 for Bergen residents).

When retired Ridgewood pediatrician Sajjad Iqbal, M.D., began suffering from facial paralysis, his doctors told him it was Bell’s palsy, a treatable condition that is often a reaction to a viral infection. But Dr. Iqbal suspected something much worse. His new book, Swimming Upstream: My Struggle and Triumph Over Cancer and the Medical Establishment: New Hope in Cancer Treatment, details his fight for a correct diagnosis—he had cancer of the parotid (salivary) glands—and the importance of advocating for your own health. “This is a story about never giving up,” says Dr. Iqbal, who didn’t begin treatment until one year after his initial complaints, thanks to erroneous advice from several specialists. “In our lives, we rarely have control over what happens to us. But we do have control of how we respond to things. And that makes a difference. When my oncologist said there was a 30 percent two-year survival rate for my type of cancer, I said, ‘Why should I be in that 70 percent? I’m going to be in the 30 percent. I’m going to make it!’” Now 15 years later, Dr. Iqbal aims to inspire other cancer patients. “It’s about having strong determination,” he says. “I encourage people to keep fighting. Persevere. Be your own advocate. It’s very important. I have helped many people around me with that message, and now I’m glad that it will reach a wider audience.” Dr. Iqbal’s book is available now on amazon.com.

Mother Nature needs your help Your home isn't the only place in need of spring cleaning—Mother Nature needs a little help with her space! Gather some of your neighbors and join a good-old fashioned cleanup. Better yet, team up with a group like Hackensack Riverkeeper to scoop debris, waste and other trash from Bergen County's parks and waterways. "Their cleanups have tremendous effect on the local environment," says volunteer Claire DeSantis, 40, of Emerson. "You'll be amazed to see how much garbage is retrieved." And volunteers will find more than just improperly disposed cups, bottles and paper goods. Hugh Carola, of Hackensack Riverkeeper, notes that balls, tires and bicycles have been recovered from places like the Hackensack River. Larger items like refrigerators and sofas area rare, but they have been found. The Riverkeeper has upcoming cleanups on May 13 (Kenneth B. George Park in River Edge) and May 20 (Overpeck Park in Teaneck). Additional cleanup dates can be found at hackensackriverkeeper.org.

Wyckoff

Thanks to lower taxes, you’ll save more of your hard-earned money here. Tree-lined streets, good schools and taxes lower than many other Bergen County towns lure people to Wyckoff, a township of about 16,600 people in the northwest side of the county. The area was originally inhabited by the Lenape Indians until the first Dutch settlers arrived in the 1600s. The name Wyckoff is thought to be a derivation of the Indian word “wickoff,” meaning “high ground,” or “wickok,” meaning water. For much of its history, the area was known as Franklin Township until various sections began to split off and incorporate. In 1926, residents voted to change the name from Franklin Township to Wyckoff. The 6.6-square-mile township was largely farmland for many years—in 1940, 30 percent of the land was still devoted to farming—but by 2012 only two farms remained: Abma’s, which dates back to the 1790s, and Goffle Road Poultry Farm, which opened in 1948. (At Thanksgiving, there’s a line out the door to pick up the freshest turkey in town from Goffle Road Poultry.)

The first church in the area was the Ponds Dutch Reformed Church, started in what is now Oakland in 1710, and local residents built the Wyckoff Dutch Reformed Church in 1806. The church was a hub for social activities and educated the area’s children until the first school was established. There are now four elementary schools and one middle school in the Wyckoff public school system, with high schoolers given the choice of attending Indian Hills in Oakland or Ramapo in Franklin Lakes. Shopping in Wyckoff is a treat, with many unique boutiques and speciality stores centered around Franklin and Wyckoff avenues and chains like Marshalls, Pet Valu and Starbucks in the Boulder Run Shopping Center. The town is also home to the county’s James A. McFaul Environmental Center, which was originally an 81-acre pig farm. Residents enjoy the serene woodland gardens, pond and picnic area.

DINING Wyckoff’s dining scene is varied, with upscale offerings like New American restaurant The Plum & The Pear, Aoyama (pictured), offering French Thai and Japanese cuisine, and The Brick House, known for steaks and seafood. Try Cafe Amici’s salads, Blue Moon Cafe for Mexican and Pizza Mandara for creative pizzas and Italian. For a great burger, head to The Barn, built in 1779 as a dairy barn. Locals have been carving their initials into the tables since it was converted to a speakeasy in 1929. Craving sweets? Sugarflake Bakery hits the spot.

I was literally confronted by a reporter with a mic and a camera crew asking me what was “going on with the oil prices?” Apparently the CNBC bosses were watching, and they called me in for an interview. If you weren’t a journalist, what would you be? I love what I am doing. And I will continue to host television until it’s time to move on. Then I will run for Congress on the Senate side. Politics? You have a great life. What’s the motivation? I’m a political junkie. I love the very idea of politics, and I have a message. What’s the biggest thing people get wrong when they make assumptions about you? That I am a “right-winger.” I am a conservative but not buried in rightwing ideology. I hate the idea of sending our young people into war, and I am in favor of increasing LEGAL immigration: two policies that don’t fit into the right-wing platform. The recent action in Syria sent a strong message to the world, but it might have been a bit too aggressive. What’s the best advice you’ve ever been given? “Never quit.” They were my mom’s last two words on Earth, whispered into my

ear at her bedside. Tell us about your family. I have a loving wife and a smart and motivated son… I lost my mom, dad and sister a few years ago, all within a short time span. I am still dealing with that. I have a niece who I’m very close to. She’s my hero. Why do you choose to live in Bergen County? And why Demarest? I adore Bergen County. We live in the perfect suburban community for a New York commuter. What can’t you live without? God, family, country, TV. (Bolling claims to have a TV in every room, and when BERGEN visited, three large-screens were on in the main living area.) What made you fall in love with your wife? Adrienne is beautiful inside and out. That’s cliché, I know, but with her, it’s true. And we laugh—a lot! When was the last time you cried? After losing my mom, then my dad and BERGENMAG.COM

my sister in such a short time period, you lose that fear of shedding tears. There was no way to hide them. Tell us about an on-air glitch and how you dealt with it. I was typing my show notes in bigger and bigger fonts until I realized I was playing poker with my hand showing! The fix: Lasik eye surgery—amazing! What’s your recipe for combining a happy family with a demanding, high-profile job? You’ve got to be a very good juggler and salesman. Believe me, it helps. The juggling involves being able to do several projects; the salesmanship comes into play when I can’t be home during certain periods. When you’re a voice in mainstream media, there are sacrifices to be made: weekend shows, midnight shows. On the plus side, I did a book tour last year for Wake Up America and had a lot of father/son time. What do you hope for your son, Eric Chase? I go to St. Patrick’s Cathedral almost daily and light candles. My first candle is

But for our 10-year anniversary, Adrienne and I flew a big group of close friends to the Bahamas to renew our vows. You’ve said that you were close to your mom. Tell us about her and your fondest memory. My mom and dad worked so hard. We were very poor growing up in inner city Chicago. It breaks my heart thinking about how many hours they worked to make life better for me. And the way they found time to watch my baseball career develop. They were such amazing parents. I hope I can be 1/100th the parent they were. You predicted a Trump win. What do you think will happen in the

Music fans might mistake Alex Bleeker and his bandmates from indie-rock group Real Estate as Brooklyn scenesters. But the Ridgewood High School alum wants to make two things clear: He’s a New Jersey kid to the core, and he and the guys are ready to break away from the beach-vacation band stereotype. In March, Real Estate released its fourth studio album, In Mind , and Bleeker sat down with BERGEN to discuss their new sound, why education was so crucial to their success and where to get the best deli food in Bergen County. { THE RIGHT NOTE } Real Estate is known for its chill, laid-back vibe. Do you think that’s something that comes from growing up in New Jersey? I like to think we’re “approachable” music—a guitar-based rock band. We’re proud of our roots. There’s a lot of pride that people from New Jersey share with one another. But we don’t like to be pigeonholed. I understand where it comes from—in the early days we had the three guitars, and on our first album, we had the song “Beach Comber” with the lyrics, “You fell into vacation zone.” So I get it.

How is In Mind different from your previous albums? We’re entering new territory—new ideas, sounds and textures. I live in California now, and my perception of music and life’s details has shifted significantly, and you can hear that in the album. For example, the lyrics that I wrote for one song, “Diamond Eyes,” are directly related to living on the West Coast. Of course, another major difference on this album is Julian Lynch. He’s our new band member—who’s also from Ridgewood.

Bergen County has produced a lot of successful musicians—The Lumineers, The Jonas Brothers, Karen O, Lea Michele, Titus Andronicus and Prawn, to name a few. In what way do you think this area is conducive to creative success? We come from a place of affluence, and we are very fortunate that way. We had all of these incredible opportunities with public art education in school, and we had progressive parents who supported our endeavors in the arts. Music doesn’t have to be your source of income or career—you can still do it if you’re passionate about it. You have to just keep going and keep creating. That goes for anything you love.

You and some of your original bandmates grew up together in Ridgewood. Were you always friends and how did you start playing together? Martin [Courtney] and I were the worst players on our little league team, which should’ve brought us together, but it actually made us rivals. But in middle school, we learned we liked the same music. We started a band, and I don’t think we’ve stopped being in a band together since that day. Julian was a year ahead of us, and I met him one summer when we were planning a backyard show for Martin’s birthday. We needed more bands, and Julian was in a group down the road, and their band asked to play.

What are some of your fondest memories of growing up in Ridgewood? We used to put on shows in my Mom’s basement. It was funny because there’d be 1,000 or so pairs of shoes at the door because we didn’t want to mess up her carpet and floors. Of course, the food in town was amazing. I used to love a deli called A Taste of Italy in Ridgewood— it was my all-time favorite. It moved to Westwood and is now called Lepore’s Italian Market. I also really like The Kosher Nosh in Glen Rock.

FUN FACT Alex Bleeker plays bass for Real Estate, but he’s also the frontman of Alex Bleeker and the Freaks, another Jersey band that recently released their third studio album.

A VERY SWEET 16

Like a coming-out party, a bat mitzvah or a quinceañera, a Sweet 16 party marks a girl’s passage into young adulthood. Thanks to her event-planner dad, one lucky Hillsdale teen’s big debut was even sweeter than most. By Marisa Sandora

What better theme for a Sweet 16 than a “Very Sweet 16” candy party? That was the theme requested by event planner Bob Conti’s daughter Kaitlyn, of Hillsdale, who knew her father could easily pull it off, thanks to his experience designing high-end weddings and other parties for Ed Libby & Co. Events, based in Hackensack. “She loves candy and wanted a fun and colorful event, so it was a natural fit,” he says. The party was held last May at the Woodcliff Manor in Woodcliff Lake. When guests—instructed to wear candy colors—arrived at the historic manor house, they entered through a colorful balloon arch by Party Box in Lodi, which set the tone for the bright bash within. About 100 of Kaitlyn’s friends attended, along with 40 or so adults, mostly family members and close family friends. Supporting the guest of honor was a court made up of her 10 best friends, who wore white and were introduced to the crowd before Kaitlyn made her grand entrance. During the cocktail hour, guests nibbled on passed hors d’oeuvres such as pigs in a blanket and stuffed mushrooms and posed for photos in a photo booth while a DJ pumped out tunes. “I use Total Entertainment [in Hackensack] a lot for work, and they are really good,” says Conti. “They came up with a really great playlist that Kaitlyn During the evening, father and daughter danced to “You’ll Be in My Heart,” by Phil Collins, which “was really sweet,” remembers Conti.

It was non-stop music all night.” When they weren’t busy dancing, guests enjoyed a buffet dinner of sliders, mac ’n’ cheese and chicken fingers for the kids, with salmon and chicken francese available for the more sophisticated diners. During the evening, Kaitlyn paused to light 16 candles, dedicated to 16 people who were special to her, like her grandparents and her older brother, who came home from college to attend. “She had people come up, and she read a little poem that she wrote for them,” says Conti. Another special moment was when father and daughter danced to Phil Collins’ “You’ll Be in My Heart.” “That was really sweet,” he recalls. For favors, guests helped themselves to candy from a “store” resembling Dylan’s Candy Bar in New York City, which was a big hit, says Conti, especially the oversized candy bars. By the end of the evening, it was clear the party was a sweet success.“Kaitlyn loved it,” says Conti. “It was really a fun night. You know the kids had a good time, because for their junior prom, they all asked if they could have the same DJ. They were dancing the entire time.” BERGENMAG.COM

Charlotte Rando received the princess treatment for her second birthday—and she has her mother, Fabiana, to thank. Family and friends attended a celebration filled with vibrant colors, homemade party favors and plenty of moments to remember. By Darius Amos

Certain moments stick out when we recall days from our childhood. There are many fond firsts—pets, concerts, crushes. Then there are moments, like a favorite birthday party. When Charlotte Rando grows up, chances are that she’ll smile when she remembers her second birthday party, which was recently planned, designed and hosted by her mother, Fabiana. “Growing up, my mother always threw elaborate parties for us,” says Fabiana, a North Jersey mother of two and the finance manager for a commercial aerospace manufacturer. “I wanted to do the same for my girls.” Planning for Charlotte’s pink, “Angelina Ballerina”-themed party took nearly six months. To prepare, Fabiana sifted through websites for ideas, mapped out the floor plan and found tools

to make decorations. Everything, from the cake topper to the goodie bags for 20 of Charlotte’s friends (pink and white boxes containing Angelina Ballerina-inspired favors like cheese and iron-on decals), was homemade. “I get the overall ideas from research, then I start creating all the pieces,” says Fabiana. “It’s not easy to do exactly what you find online, so that’s when you modify and make it your own.” Fabiana did recruit a friend, who is a professional baker, to make the pink birthday cake, cupcakes and cakepops. “Other than her, I did all of the work,” she says. “I truly enjoy throwing these parties, and it takes me away from my everyday life.” Of course, none of the guests at Charlotte’s party were disappointed. “Charlotte was amazed, and she and all her friends were screaming with joy.”

DON’T BE BUGGED THIS SUMMER

Warm weather’s return revives concerns about Zika virus and other insect-borne illnesses.

The advent of warm weather brings many welcome treats. But insects aren’t one of them. More than just annoying, mosquitoes and ticks carry bugs of their own, like the viruses and bacteria that cause Zika, West Nile, Lyme and other diseases. According to Steven Sperber, M.D., chief of the Division of Infectious Diseases at Hackensack University Medical Center, ticks in our neck of the woods carry four potentially serious diseases: Lyme, babesiosis, anaplasmosis and ehrlichiosis. West Nile is the primary illness spread by mosquitos in this region. Zika is another mosquito-borne illness, but we haven’t seen it transmitted by the insects in this area, says Dr. Sperber. Symptoms for these range from none at all to flu-like. Complications, however, can be long-lasting and in some cases potentially fatal. But don’t let that keep you locked indoors all summer. “People shouldn’t be fearful,” Dr. Sperber says. “But it’s good to be careful and know how to decrease your risk of being exposed or becoming infected.” Prevention is job one. While it is not possible to guarantee full protection, it is relatively easy to keep bug bites at a minimum. With ticks, that means avoiding the grassy and wooded areas in which they live. When you do venture into the woods, wear long pants tucked into your socks, long-sleeve shirts and hats to keep

skin covered. Light colors are recommended because they make it easier to spot ticks should they stick on clothing. Insect repellent containing DEET (the chemical N,N-Diethylmeta-toluamide) also helps, though DEET should not be applied to babies under three months. Finally, do a thorough body inspection after any time spent in tick-friendly areas. “Ticks need to be embedded for 24 to 48 hours before they transmit disease,” says Harry Banschick, M.D., chairman of pediatrics at Holy Name Medical Center in Teaneck. “So if it’s been less, you probably don’t have to worry.” Check children carefully too, looking behind the ears and under hair, Dr. Banschick adds. “Ticks are tiny, about the size of a poppy seed.” And if you do spot a tick, be very careful removing it. “With a fine-edge tweezer, try to grab the tick and pull it straight up without destroying it. You don’t want to leave parts of the mouth in,” he says. The same measures apply to mosquito prevention, along with avoiding scented perfumes and body washes, which mosquitos consider delicious. Also try to prevent the bugs from breeding on your property by removing any standing water from rain gutters and barrels, old tires, buckets, toys, bird baths, or any other container where mosquitoes lay their eggs. When indoors, keep windows and doors closed or securely screened.

The glories of Gotham are many—from walking the winding trails of Central Park and the High Line to marveling at the architecture of the Chrysler Building and the works of art along Museum Mile. Then there’s the draw of the Great White Way. Of course, you’ll want to tailor your tour in keeping with what most appeals to you and mom. But there are some things that shouldn’t be missed, for example, the iconic Grand Central Terminal. Take an audio tour—there are “local” and “express” versions available—to learn about the history and architectural highlights of the terminal, anecdotes included. Hungry? Take a seat at casual, perfectfor-people-watching Michael Jordan’s The Steak House N.Y.C. in Grand Central. You might not see him there, but you will see slabs of beef aplenty. Designed by David Rockwell in 1998, the eatery pays homage to glamorous train travel with a design reminiscent of a dining car. The dining room stretches across the north balcony so you can watch the comings-and-goings while choosing from the traditional menu or, during brunch hours, a three course fixedprice special ($25). Also worth checking out with mom is the recently opened Met Breuer, a new satellite space of The Metropolitan Museum of Art in the shell of the old Whitney Museum. The Marcel Breuer-designed edifice was acquired to expand The Met’s more contemporary collections. No matter which attractions you choose, there’s an easier way to pay admission while avoiding long lines, The New York Pass (newyorkpass.com) offers cashfree and Fast Track entry to dozens of attractions.

There’s plenty for mother and daughter to enjoy in the City by the Bay and vicinity, and the best part is much of it can be done without spending a lot of money. Take in San Francisco’s sights via cable car, which can take you to the top of Lombard Street where you can enjoy a stroll down the famous crooked roadway. If you’re in the mood for a longer hike, visit Lands End Park, where you can explore the Lands End Labyrinth and the ruins of the Sutro Baths. And, of course, you can’t miss a walk across the iconic Golden Gate Bridge. (It’s a must, even on a foggy day.) On nicer days, brave the crowds at Baker Beach for a fantastic view and soak in the friendly vibe at Fisherman’s Wharf and Pier 39—two tourist-friendly waterfront attractions with plenty of shops and restaurants (as well as a boisterous group of sea lions). You can also catch a ferry from the Wharf and visit the infamous Alcatraz prison. If shopping is more your cup of tea, Union Square is the place to be, as is the nearby nine-story Westfield San Francisco Centre. If you’d prefer to go off the beaten path, visit the Haight-Ashbury neighborhood for vintage finds and the Mission for both high-end and thrift stores. There are other destinations just outside of the city—Sausalito and Telegraph Avenue near the California-Berkeley campus have shops and vendors that offer unique wares, services and food. About an hour outside of San Francisco is Muir Woods, where you can hike through a forest of redwoods, the world’s tallest trees. And a 90-minute drive north will lead you into Napa Valley, where you can stop at different wineries and sample some of the world’s best wines. (Many wineries allow you to bring food or buy it there for an afternoon picnic!)

The capital of France is loaded with iconic can’t-miss destinations: You won’t regret visits to the Eiffel Tower, the Louvre Museum, Avenue des Champs-Elysées and Notre Dame de Paris. Once you’ve checked those off your list, you’ll want to escape the throngs of tourists and start shopping. You’ll find trendy designer boutiques in the chic Marais neighborhood and haute-couture along the Avenue Montaigne. You should also explore the covered passages, or les passages couverts, that were the original malls of Paris. Start with the Galerie Vivienne, a truly stunning shopping destination. On the weekends, don’t miss the famous Les Puces flea market at Porte de Clignancourt; it’s the perfect place to find a unique treasure to take home. For a low-key museum day, head to the Musée de l’Orangerie (and see the Tuileries Gardens while you’re there), the Musée Rodin or the Musée Marmottan, which houses the world’s largest collection of Monets. Getting around the city on foot is encouraged, but when you’re ready to rest your feet head to a café for some people watching. Chez Prune, situated on the Canal St-Martin, is popular among both tourists and locals. The famous Café de Flore is also worth a visit, as it is one of the oldest coffeehouses in Paris. Dining in Paris can often be an overwhelming experience—and not just in terms of the price. Luckily there are friendly bistros like Café Constant and intimate restaurants like Cinq Mars, where you serve yourself from a giant bowl of chocolate mousse. If you’d like your dinner to include a view of the Eiffel Tower, Les Ombres and Monsieur Bleu are known for both their food and picturesque locations. Of course, you can’t leave Paris without stocking up on the delicious and colorful macarons from Ladurée.

I have seen a dramatic shift towards non-invasive and minimally invasive treatments over the past ten years. People are no longer willing to be down for even one week after a procedure. In my practice, I find more people opting for CoolSculptingTM and SculpSureTM treatments to remove fat instead of liposuction. RAINBOW CAKE

Serves: 18

INGREDIENTS

n 1 cup frozen mango chunks n 3 ¼ cups (or 6¾ sticks) unsalted butter, softened n 3 ¾ cups superfine sugar n 9 large eggs, lightly beaten n 5 ⅔cups self-rising flour, sifted n 1 tsp. fine salt n g enerous 1/3₃cup whole milk n 2 tsp. vanilla extract food coloring pastes (purple, blue, green, yellow, orange and pink) n f ood coloring pastes (purple, blue, green, yellow, orange and pink) FOR THE ICING n 3 ½ cups (or 7 sticks) unsalted butter, softened n 7 cups powdered sugar, sifted n 3 ½ cups full-fat cream cheese n 1 tsp. vanilla extract TO DECORATE n 1 oz. rainbow confetti sprinkles n 2 candy necklaces n 2 wooden skewers

DIRECTIONS

Preheat the oven to 350°F. Grease and line three 8-inch round cake pans with parchment paper. Using an electric hand mixer, beat the butter and superfine sugar together in a large bowl until light and fluffy. Gradually add the eggs, beating well after each addition. Sift in the flour and salt and fold through evenly with a large spoon. Stir in the milk and vanilla extract until combined. Weigh divide the mixture between six bowls. Add a different food coloring paste to each bowl, until you reach your required colors. Spoon three of the cake mixtures into the pans, spreading evenly. Bake for 20 to 25 minutes, or until a skewer inserted into the center comes out clean. Let cool for 5 minutes, then turn out onto a wire rack and let cool completely. Wash and dry, then re-grease and line the cake pans. Bake the remaining colored cake mixtures and cool as before. Once the cake layers are cold, use a serrated knife to trim the tops to make the cakes level, then trim the cake edges using an upturned plate that is just smaller than the cake, as a guide. For the cream cheese icing, beat the butter and powdered sugar together in a bowl until light and fluffy. Gradually beat in the cream cheese, a spoonful at a time, then beat in the vanilla extract until smooth and combined. Sandwich the cake layers together, spreading a few tablespoons of the icing between each layer, starting with the purple layer, then the blue, green, yellow, orange and pink ones. Cover the cake completely with a thin layer of icing to catch all the crumbs, then chill in the refrigerator for 1 hour.

Cream cheese frosting gives a tangy contrast to the sweetness of the cake while also providing a rich, smooth texture that’s easy to spread. MULTICOLORED MACARONS

INGREDIENTS

n 2 ½ cups ground almonds n 2 ½ cups powdered sugar n 6 large egg whites n g enerous ¾ cup superﬁne sugar n 1/3₃cup (or ¾ stick) salted butter, softened n f ood coloring pastes (purple, blue, green, yellow, orange and pink) n 2 Tbs. rainbow sprinkles FOR THE BUTTERCREAM n 1 cup (or 2 sticks) salted butter, softened n 1 cup powdered sugar n f ood coloring pastes (see colors above) YOU WILL NEED n 1 1 disposable pastry bags

DIRECTIONS

Line three baking sheets with parchment paper. Blend the ground almonds and powdered sugar together in a food-processor until fine. Set aside. Using an electric hand mixer, whisk the egg whites in a large, grease-free bowl until soft peaks form, then gradually whisk in the superfine sugar until glossy. Sift the almond mix over the egg whites and gently fold through with a large metal spoon. Divide the mixture between seven bowls, then add a little food coloring paste to six of the bowls, gently folding it through evenly, then fold the rainbow sprinkles through the remaining bowl. Be very gentle when folding, so the mixtures don’t become too loose or runny and therefore difficult to pipe. Spoon one portion of colored mixture into a pastry bag and snip off the tip to make a ½-inch opening. Pipe 1-inch rounds onto the baking sheets. (Each batch of mixture will make about 8 macarons.) Repeat with the remaining colored mixtures and the sprinkles mixture, using a fresh pastry bag each time. Tap the baking sheets twice on the work surface to flatten out the macarons and to dislodge any air bubbles. If any peaks are left, lightly wet a finger and gently dab the peak flat. Set aside to rest for 30 minutes, or until the macarons have formed a skin on the surface when you lightly touch them.

Meanwhile, preheat the oven to 300°F. Bake the macarons for 10 to 12 minutes, then let cool. For the buttercream, beat the butter and powdered sugar together in a small bowl until light and ﬂuffy. Divide between four bowls and add a little food coloring paste to each portion. Spoon each into a separate pastry bag, then snip off the tip of each bag to make a ½-inch opening. Pipe some buttercream onto the bases of an alternate color macaron, then sandwich them together with a different colored macaron on top.

STORAGE TIP: Macarons are very vulnerable to humidity and smells, so store the sandwiched pairs in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 7 days. Stack them carefully, with wax paper between each layer. BERGENMAG.COM

RAINBOW CAKE IN A JAR Serves: 1

INGREDIENTS

n 1/3₃cup (or ¾ stick) unsalted butter, softened, plus extra for greasing n 1/3 cup superfine sugar n 1 large egg n ½ cup self-rising flour pinch of fine salt n ¼ tsp. vanilla extract n f ood coloring pastes (purple, blue, green, yellow, orange and red) FOR THE ICING n ¼ cup heavy cream n 1 tsp. powdered sugar, sifted n ¼ tsp. vanilla extract n 1 tsp. edible confetti or rainbow sprinkles YOU WILL NEED n 1 4 fl. oz. ovenproof glass jar

DIRECTIONS

Preheat the oven to 350°F and grease a jar with butter. Using an electric hand mixer, beat the butter and superfine sugar together in a medium bowl until light and fluffy. Add the egg, beating well, then sift in the flour and salt and fold through evenly with a spoon. Stir in the vanilla extract until combined. Divide the mixture between six small bowls. Stir a little food coloring paste into each portion. Spoon the colored cake mixtures into the prepared jar, spooning them one on top of the other and working your way through the rainbow—purple, blue, green, yellow, orange and red.

Bake for 20 to 25 minutes, or until a skewer inserted into the center comes out clean. Set the jar aside to cool completely. For the icing, whip the cream, powdered sugar and vanilla extract together in a small bowl until soft peaks form. Once the cake is cold, spoon the icing over the cake and scatter with edible confetti or rainbow sprinkles before serving.

Add a splash of citrus to Japanese rice wine to create an ideal cocktail for the eve of summer.

Sake can sometimes be too savory to drink alone; that’s why it makes a great cocktail when mixed with something else. Grapefruit juice dilutes the sake flavor without masking it completely. Meanwhile, its citrus notes complement the sake. This drink can be served hot or cold, which makes it versatile.”

GRAPEFRUIT AND LAVENDER SAKE (Serves 2) INGREDIENTS n 2 cups sake n 2 cups fresh grapefruit juice n 1 Tbs. dried lavender n ¼ cup sugar n ¼ cup water n mint leaves for garnish DIRECTIONS Bring sugar and water to a boil for 25 minutes until a thick syrup forms. Add dry lavender to sake and infuse for at least 30 minutes. Mix infused sake with grapefruit juice and 1 tablespoon of simple syrup from the sugar water. Add mint leaves as garnish.

‘Andiamo’

Set your GPS for Haworth and your palate for pure pleasure, Italian style. When friends say, “let’s go to Andiamo,” smile knowingly and agree. After all, the Italian word andiamo means “let’s go.” And go you should: The 160-seat, family-run restaurant in Haworth is a winner, serving up old-world favorites and some surprises too. Our group of six, veteran Bergen County eaters, had never been to this establishment, perhaps because it’s 15 mostly non-highway miles from home. But we’re glad we made the trip. We were seated in an alcove-like space, which provided an intimate feel with only six other tables in the area. For appetizers, we opted to share the fried calamari, surprisingly crisp yet tender (we asked for both marinara sauce and the spicier fra diavolo), Blue Point oysters, large and fresh, and eggplant rollatini, the perfect comfort food, with a yummy filling of fresh ricotta and mozzarella in a mild tomato sauce. Andiamo is known for its blackboard specials—created by chef Linda Dickstein, co-owner of the restaurant with husband Don—and we chose a couple of those and others from the main menu. Chef Linda has displayed a clear talent for adopting traditional Italian recipes and also brave new dishes. All of them are custom-cooked to order, so the service was leisurely on the Saturday we visited, but certainly up to pace for a relaxed dinner with friends. Of note was the soft-shelled crab special prepared in a tempura batter. The two large delectable crabs were delicious, as good as any we’ve tasted. They were served on a

bed of traditional Japanese vegetables and rice. Another special was the sliced skirt steak served with peppers and onions. Though very flavorful and cooked exactly as requested, medium rare, the steak wasn’t as tender as one of my friends had hoped. Two main-menu fish dishes more than made up for the steak. The bronzino filet, served with a lemon butter, white wine and capered sauce, was cooked to perfection. Served atop a piquant sautéed spinach and basmati rice base, it was melt-in-yourmouth exquisite. And the salmon with honey citrus glaze, accompanied by spinach and smashed potatoes, was cooked medium rare and more than satisfied this oft-fishordering diner. All portions were more than ample; several of us asked for doggie bags. You can certainly tell Don Dickstein loves his job. He visited our table twice during the evening, chatting us up about where we lived and telling us about the comedy routines he books for special nights. He’s quite charming, and you can’t help feeling like invited guests. Only two brave souls saved room for dessert. They opted for the tried-and-true: cannoli and tartufo. The cannoli’s shell was crisp and the filling creamy. The gelato dessert consisted of chocolate and vanilla with a cherry center and covered in a thick hard dark chocolate shell.
