Speaking of eyes, we’ve got advice about those too—as well as lips and hair. You’ll see highways, industrial parks and old refineries during a car ride through the Meadowlands, but a boat ride is quite the opposite—it’s wetlands and wildlife, history and nature. Get an up-close look at one of New Jersey’s hidden gems this summer by hopping aboard a Hackensack Riverkeeper eco-cruise—a 2.5-hour boat ride that traverses the region’s various waterways, channels and marshes. “We started this program to show people the wildlife and teach them about the history and importance of the Meadowlands,” says Capt. Hugh Carola, who has been leading eco-cruises for more than 15 years. “We wanted to educate everyone—one class, one garden club, one seniors group, one scout pack at a time—and show the many species of birds, reptiles and other creatures that thrive here.”

If you build it, they will come. They’re banking on that to happen in Hackensack, where a new performing arts center is expected to attract crowds to a revitalized downtown. Plans to repurpose the former Masonic Temple at the corner of Atlantic and State streets into a 224-seat state-of-the-art theater are underway, with a grand opening of the Hackensack Performing Arts Center anticipated for early next year. “This is ridiculously exciting for all of us,” says Greg Liosi, director of the Hackensack Cultural Arts Center, a smaller venue on Broadway, outside the city’s main business district. “A new facility like this will draw patrons to Hackensack who will want to do something before or after the show. It will be a showcase for all of our restaurants and other great places.” No doubt it will also be a boost for the theater companies that currently use the smaller center on Broadway. Organizations like The Company, Hackensack Theatre Company, Teaneck New Theatre and New Vision Players are “excited” by the idea of moving into the bigger facility, according to Liosi. He adds that the new venue, with its “beautiful lobbies, raked seating and big stage,” can accommodate larger acts. The city has already earmarked several weeks next year in the new arts center to host “concerts, headliners and national podcasts,” Liosi says. “We’ll invest to bring in names that are recognizable to all.” Follow the progress of the center at uppermain.org.

A former hair salon, the rustic space is divided into three areas: an artisan coffee bar up front, communal workspace for those with coffee and computers in tow, and a lounge area in the rear. Dress your drink with a creamer from New York’s Battenkill Valley, then pair it

From Park Avenue to Leonia It started a decade ago with a handful of abstract pieces on a cozy halfacre plot of land in Leonia. Soon, art starting popping up all over town—a shiny chrome trumpet player here, a rainbow-colored feline there, a whatchamacallit across the street. Now, the artscape is bigger and better than ever. This is Sculpture for Leonia, a borough-wide public display of artwork donated by both local and international artists. Today, there are more than 50 pieces peppered throughout downtown Leonia. Its most recent installation, “Moments in a Stream,” is on loan from renowned German artist Ewerdt Hilgemann. The exhibit, which was previously part of a public display along Park Avenue in Manhattan, features seven stainless steel sculptures that range from eight to 20 feet in height. Each piece was created using an intricate
vacuum process that “implodes” the steel into unusual shapes. In addition to the unique nature of the new exhibit, the enormity of it sets it apart from the other art, says Barbara Mitrani, president of Sculpture for Leonia, noting that two flatbed trucks and special equipment were needed for transportation and installation. Check out Hilgemann’s project at the corner of Station Parkway and Fort Lee Road, then take a stroll through town to see all of the works. Be sure to visit the Erika and David Boyd Sculpture Garden on Broad Avenue, where Sculpture for Leonia began. “We can’t believe it has been 10 years,” Mitrani says. “Many thanks go to all of the people and the organizations that have helped us over the years.” Find out more at sculpture forleonia.org.

‘Reduce your risk for heart and vascular problems’ Monitor diabetes, high blood pressure and high cholesterol, particularly if you are a smoker. These are the greatest risk factors of stroke, says Thomas Bernik, M.D., chief of vascular surgery. “These are things you can try to control,” he says. n Difficulty walking can be an early indicator of vascular disease. Consider ultrasound testing to differentiate the disease from arthritis and other ailments. n Know your family history. “If your mother or father have had an aneurysm, it’s possible that will be passed down,” he says.

help isn’t immediately available during an emergency, your quick thinking might be the difference between life and death. “The longer you wait to treat a heart attack, the more damage is done to the heart,” say EMTs. n Recognize the symptoms: Men may experience shortness of breath, pressure on the chest, and pain in the left arm and jaw. Women may feel shortness of breath and pain at the bottom of the sternum. n Perform basic CPR or use an automated external defibrillator on someone who has gone into cardiac arrest until help arrives.
‘Chronic pain? Food can be your best ally’ If you suffer from chronic pain—arthritis, fibromyalgia, neuropathic pain—a change in diet might be the key to feeling better, says Despina Psillides, M.D., medical director of the Graf Center for Integrative Medicine. n Chronic pain can be caused by inflammation, and many types of foods can cause inflammation, including wheat, sugar, artificial sweeteners and gluten. n So what foods should you eat? Try whole grains, fruits, vegetables, omega 3-rich fatty fish and olive oil, Dr. Psillides recommends. n
‘Breathe easy’ The best prescription for healthy lungs is to stop smoking, advises pulmonologist Srikant Kondapaneni, M.D. Better yet—don’t start. n Improve your diet, and exercise regularly. You’ll be out of breath faster if you’re overweight, he says. n Go ahead and take over-the-counter medicine for a cough, but see your doctor if your symptoms extend beyond 10 days. “Make sure it’s not a bacterial or viral illness,” says Dr. Kondapaneni. n Don’t ignore conditions like snoring and sleep apnea, which can lead to heart problems and stroke. n

A hillsdale designer transforms a dark paneled space into a bright, expansive area for entertaining—and hanging out with the family.
When searching for inspiration for a 700-square-foot living and dining room renovation, Hillsdale-based interior designer Jennifer Pacca came up with a classic-meets-contemporary motif after she and the Montvale homeowner picked out a pair of area rugs—one popped with pattern and color, while the other was understated and neutral. “They like a classic design, but were open to suggestions,” says Pacca. “And a more contemporary look is in keeping with the style of the house.” To begin, Pacca stripped the space of its “ski lodge” design, ripping up old carpeting and

removing dark cedar paneling from the walls and ceiling. A wall separating the living room and dining area also was removed. “The dining room was so narrow that it made sense to create one big, open floor plan,” explains Pacca, noting that the family loves to entertain and needed room for everyone to spread out. Sheetrock was installed throughout the newly expanded space and painted a soft “peachy beige”—the tone of the dining room rug as well as other rooms in the home. Dark engineered wood flooring complements the solid wood ceiling beams, which were spared during demolition. “The floors and beams give the room a rustic feeling, but we brought in contemporary pieces to keep it looking fresh,” she says. Pacca worked with the homeowner to find club chairs and a sofa with nailhead trim for the living room, where the patterned area

rug and bold throw pillows “pop with color” and offset the otherwise neutral tones. Unique objets d’art adorn the accent tables. In the dining area, a colorful landscape mural complements the grid of nine smaller works hanging on an adjacent wall. “I wanted to break it up a bit—I didn’t want to hang two big paintings.” John Zdankowski of Hillsdale-based Kitchen and Bath Renovators constructed a built-in bench and wall unit, and also transformed the old brick fireplace, which now features a mantel with a flat-screen television and wainscot treatment above it. “We designed the mantel to become a focal point—not just a mantel with a TV hanging over it,” Pacca says. “The built-ins allow the owners to display some pretty pieces from their collection as well as photos of the family.” The result? The homeowners are happy. And a designer can’t ask for much more than that.

Grilled Shrimp with Watermelon and Feta INGREDIENTS n 16 raw whole jumbo shrimp n 2 lemons n 3 garlic cloves, sliced n ½ to 1 tsp. crushed red pepper n ½ to 1 tsp. dried oregano n Salt and freshly ground black pepper n 1 small watermelon n 1 cup feta cheese, crumbled n 4 scallions, sliced n ¼ cup fruity extra virgin olive oil n A good handful of Greek basil or mint leaves

DIRECTIONS n Start by marinating the shrimp: Put the shrimp into a large glass or ceramic bowl and add the juice and finely grated zest of 1 lemon, garlic, crushed red pepper, oregano and a good seasoning of salt and black pepper. Mix well, cover and let marinate in the fridge for a couple of hours. While the shrimp are marinating, cut the watermelon into chucks or slices and remove the skin. Arrange on a large platter, cover and chill in the fridge. Preheat a grill or a ridged grill pan on the stove over medium to high heat. Cook the shrimp for 1 to 2 minutes on each side until cooked through and nicely charred. Arrange the shrimp over the chilled watermelon and scatter with the feta and scallions. Drizzle the olive oil over the whole dish, top with a flourish of Greek basil or mint and serve with extra lemon to squeeze over.

Goat’s Milk Labneh with Carrot, Beet and Pomegranate Salad
Serves 4 to 6
INGREDIENTS n 18 oz. full-fat goat’s milk yogurt n Salt and freshly ground black pepper n Bunch of small carrots n Bunch of mixed small beets n 3 Tbs. olive oil n 3 garlic cloves, unpeeled n 1 sprig thyme, leaves picked n 2 Tbs. coarsely chopped flat-leaf parsley n 1 Tb. coarsely chopped mint n Seeds from 1 pomegranate n ½ cup sliced pistachios n 1 Tb. pomegranate molasses n 1 to 2 Tbs. pistachio or extra virgin olive oil n ½ tsp. ground sumac
DIRECTIONS n Season the yogurt with salt and black pepper. Line a finemesh nylon sieve with a cheesecloth and scoop the seasoned yogurt into the sieve. Suspend it over a bowl, cover with plastic wrap and leave in the fridge for 24 hours to allow the water to drain from the yogurt. The result is a soft cheese called labneh. n Preheat the oven to 375°F. Scrub the carrots and beets and remove the stalks and leaves. Cut any large carrots in half and add to a roasting pan, drizzle with the oil and season with salt and black pepper. Tuck the garlic cloves in with the carrots, scatter with the thyme and roast on the middle rack of the oven for about 30 minutes, depending on size, until tender. n Cook the unpeeled beets in a saucepan of boiling salted water until tender, drain and leave until cool enough to handle. Peel and cut into bite-sized wedges. n Put the carrots and beets into a bowl, add the chopped herbs, squeeze in the roasted garlic from its skin and season with salt and black pepper. Mix the veggies gently using your hands and arrange on a serving platter. Dot the labneh over the top and scatter with the pomegranate seeds and pistachios. Drizzle over the pomegranate molasses and pistachio or olive oil and season with a sprinkling of the sumac. Serve immediately.

Caramelized Mandarin Salad INGREDIENTS n 8–10 mandarins or clementines— choose firm ones, which are easier to peel n ¾ cup superfine sugar n Juice of 2 large oranges n 1 to 2 tsp. rosewater or orange flower water n Seeds from ½ pomegranate n ½ cup shelled pistachios, coarsely chopped n 2 to 3 sprigs mint, coarsely chopped

DIRECTIONS n For a more elegant look to the finished salad, rather than using your hands to peel the mandarins, cut a thin slice off the top and bottom of each and sit them upright on the cutting board. Using a sharp, serrated knife, and working from top to bottom, cut the peel away in strips using a swaying action. Try to cut all of the pith away, leaving the fruit in a near barrel shape. Cut each mandarin in half through the middle and arrange in a serving dish. n To make the caramel, put the sugar in a heavy-bottomed saucepan, add 2 Tbs. of cold water, and set over low to medium heat to dissolve the sugar without stirring. Increase the heat to medium, bring the syrup to a boil and cook until it becomes amber-colored, swirling the pan to ensure that it cooks evenly.
n Meanwhile, heat the orange juice until just below boiling in a separate saucepan or in a bowl in the microwave. Slide the caramel pan off the heat and carefully add the hot juice—the caramel will splutter furiously, so keep your hands covered by a cloth and your face away from the pan. Return to the heat to melt any hardened caramel, bring to a boil and simmer for 1 minute. Remove from the heat, add the rosewater or orange flower water and let cool for a few minutes. n Pour the caramel over the mandarins and stir gently to coat the fruit. Leave for 1 hour or so for the caramel to flavor the little oranges and vice versa. n Scatter with the pomegranate seeds, pistachios and mint, and serve.

These young green soybeans are typically served in their fuzzy pod, steamed and sprinkled with coarse salt, and are eaten by dragging the pod between the teeth, releasing the beans. The nutty, buttery flavor and somewhat crunchy texture make edamame a popular snack or appetizer, but the beans are also low in calories, high in protein and fiber, and incredibly easy to prepare at home.
POWER UP One cup of unshelled edamame rings in at just 190 calories and yields a hefty eight grams of fiber. It’s also a complete protein (meaning it contains all nine essential amino acids), boasting 17 grams a cup—about as much as three eggs. Edamame is an excellent source of folate, manganese and vitamin K too, as well as a good source of copper, phosphorous, magnesium, thiamin and iron. And, according to the American Institute for Cancer Research, it contains a variety of phytochemicals that may be beneficial in preventing and fighting cancer. So munch away!
BUY/ STORE/ SERVE Edamame can be purchased fresh, frozen and dry-roasted with various seasonings (sea salt, wasabi) for snacking right out of

the bag. The fresh variety—available during late summer at Asian grocery stores like Mitsuwa Marketplace in Edgewater—lasts only a day or two in the fridge. Once cooked, the pods can be stored in the refrigerator for up to a few days. Frozen edamame, on the other hand, will keep in the freezer for about a year. To prepare, boil the fresh or frozen pods for about four minutes, drain and immerse in an ice bath to stop the cooking. (You don’t want them to get mushy!) Sprinkle with coarse salt and, if you’d like, other spices such as garlic or cayenne. Or remove the beans from the pods (gently squeeze with your fingers to release them) and incorporate into your favorite dips, salads and stir-fries.
Some folks prefer to steam edamame, which is the way it is prepared in many Asian restaurants—purists argue this method retains more of the nutrients. To steam, place a steamer basket into a large saucepan and fill the pan with about an inch of water, making certain that the water does not touch the basket. Bring the water to a boil and place the frozen edamame in the basket. Cover with a lid and steam until tender, about two minutes. Another option: Edamame can be shelled and roasted (350°F for 30 to 40 minutes) with extra-virgin olive oil, salt and pepper.

Although edamame has been enjoyed in East Asian countries for more than seven centuries, it didn’t become popular in the United States until the 1980s when a TV miniseries, Shogun, brought about a boom in Japanese food and culture in California, according to the 2009 book History of Edamame, Green Vegetable Soybeans, and Vegetable-Type Soybeans. Why can’t the sharp pains in my foot and leg be correctly diagnosed? [A] Often times, nerve conduction studies miss a diagnoses of functional nerve pain, because at the time of the test, a muscle that typically may compress a nerve is not inflamed or engorged with blood (such as after exercise), and therefore doesn’t compress the nerve as it courses through small openings in the muscle or nearby fascia. Our office often diagnoses these hidden problems. Common causes of nerve pain may be from previous trauma, either from a direct fall; hit on the area or from chronic overuse of the foot or leg; or simply one may have a genetic predisposition to this malady. In these types of foot and leg nerve disorders, scar tissue or fibroses form over the nerve or the tunnel that the nerve courses through gets scarred, inhibiting it from functioning normally. If it’s a sensory nerve, you may feel numbness, tingling or just a sharp, fire-like burning or radiating pain down the leg or in the foot. If it’s a motor (muscle) nerve that’s affected, you may notice a weakness when you push off or when you lift your foot or toes upwards. During my extensive exam, I can clinically decipher which nerve is involved. Our office is the only NJ member of U.S. Neuropathy Centers and has advanced training to diagnose various types of localized nerve conditions. We perform short-acting “selective” nerve blocks of each individualized nerve to prevent it from firing. If all the pain immediately goes away, then we have diagnosed the exact pinched nerve. What is it about a youthful female face that we find attractive? [A] Let’s think about why we find the youthful female face so attractive. It is not excessively pulled tight. It doesn’t have shiny, thinned out skin. It does have volume in the right places. So when I do face lifting operations, I look to restore volume and internally lift tissues so that there is only moderate tightness in the facial skin. The neck itself, however, can be pulled tightly. I accomplish restoration of volume three ways. Around the eyes, I separate out the herniated fat bags and transpose (move) them around to fill nearby hollow voids (such as the lid cheek junction). I also liposuction fat from the abdomen or thighs and reinject it in small amounts into key areas of the face (cheeks, jawline, temples, lips) to give natural, youthful volume. Finally, I elevate and re-suspend the fallen internal layers of muscle, fascia and fat (SMAS) back to a youthful location in the cheek and neck which eliminates jowl sag and neck bands. Finally, the skin is re-draped on the face, tightened and excess skin is eliminated. My website and office photo books show hundreds of views of before and after cases. Patients come from across the country and internationally for this procedure. I recently had a patient who is in the film industry come to me from Los Angeles for this very approach. To me, it is very gratifying to look at a healed patient who looks like she went back in time.

Why are anxiety disorders so prevalent and what is the most effective treatment? [A] It’s hard to determine if the increase in anxiety disorders is a result of the awareness we now have of mental disorders and/or the stressors of the modern world. This Caribbean hideaway is the perfect place to make like a stage star—or a sea turtle. By Rita Guarna
Before St. Vincent and the Grenadines—100 MILES west of Barbados—served as the setting for the swashbuckler film series Pirates of the Caribbean, this island chain with the cumbersome name was known primarily to yachties and seclusion-seeking music and movie stars. But the luxurious, all-inclusive Buccament Bay Resort no doubt will appeal to other Caribbean connoisseurs on the prowl for some under-the-radar fun. And the good times come in several notable flavors. The Harlequin Performing Arts Academy, for example, gives guests the rare opportunity to be coached (yes, it’s included in the price) in voice, acting and dance by world-class professionals. Pros live on site for three-month stints. Recently, Phil Cavill, an actor, vocal coach and West End star—who was asked to audition for and was cast as Jean Valjean in the West End production of Les Misérables, the world’s most successful musical—and Netta Evans, an actress, drama coach and founder of The Windmill Theatre School in London, were helping guests channel their inner divas. The duo had budding protégés first recite silly tongue-twisters (the better to relax them and their vocal cords) such as “the lips, the teeth, the tip of the tongue.” (Go ahead; see if you can repeat it quickly.)
