EDITOR’S NOTE

IT’S ONLY SKIN DEEP... BUT AS THE ANCIENT GREEK

philosopher Aristotle said more than two thousand years ago, “Personal beauty is a greater recommendation than a letter of reference.” Aristotle knew that looking good—and making a good face-toface impression—can open doors for you. And it’s in this spirit that we present Bergen Health & Life’s first “beauty issue,” dedicated to helping you be the best you possible. On the pages that follow, for example, you’ll learn tips from local experts on how to “summerize” your makeup routine. I’m a bit embarrassed to admit it, but I wasn’t very familiar with highlighters—other than the neon Sharpie kind—until I sought Daniela Musano’s advice, which appears on page 24. Musano, the owner of Araya Rebirth in Ridgewood, certainly opened my eyes. And now I’ve got a highlighter in my makeup bag. Speaking of eyes, we’ve got advice about those too—as well as lips and hair. Turn to page 20 to discover a fantastic yet quick trick to prevent saltwater and chlorine from drying out your lustrous locks. Since what you wear certainly affects how you feel about yourself and the impression you make, we present some fantastic fashions on page 40. The look is “everyday chic”—dresses and tops and bottoms that will serve you well from work to weekends. Finally, be sure to check out the 40-plus local day spas on page 34, where you can book a massage or a facial, of course, as well as a Reiki, chakra balancing or music therapy session—to pamper you on the inside as well as the outside. Now that’s a beautiful thing!

TIPS

You don’t have to wait for autumn to visit an orchard—many North Jersey farms are brimming with ripe, delicious fruit right now! Here’s a list of spots where “pickyour-own” is a popular and sometimes preferred harvest method. Demarest Farms (244 Wierimus Rd., Hillsdale, 201.666.0472; demarestfarms.com) is the county’s premier peach-picking spot—ideal for families, couples, groups and individuals. Hurry in—picking season begins July 23. Admission is $5 and includes a hayride; bags to hold your peaches are $9. Travel south to Delicious Orchards (320 Route 34 South, Colts Neck, 732.462.1989; deliciousorchardsnjonline .com) for blackberries and

TRENDS

raspberries—available in both black and red varieties. It’s free to enter, and you pay only for what you pick. But with so many berry choices, we bet you’ll pick plenty! Head to the fields at Donaldson Farms (358 Allen Rd., Hackettstown, 908.852.9122; donaldsonfarms.net), where you’ll find strawberries, raspberries and blackberries waiting to be picked. Admission is free—prices are determined by the weight of your berries. When you’re done picking, you can take the family for a hayride or stop by the market and meet a few friendly farm animals. There’s a terrific selection of pickyou-own fruits and vegetables at Alstede Farms (1 Alstede Farms Ln., Chester, 908.879.7189, alstedefarms .com). Fill your bags with gooseberries, raspberries, currants, cherries, strawberries and peaches. At the end of July, vegetables such as sweet corn, peppers and eggplant will be ready to pick. Weekday afternoon admission is $5; weekends are $6.99. The cost of your harvest is extra. Strawberry season is over, but you can pick raspberries in late August at family-owned Sussex County Strawberry Farm (565 Route 206, Andover, 973.579.5055; sussexcountystraw berryfarm.com). Cash only!

Cruise

control

You’ll see highways, industrial parks and old refineries during a car ride through the Meadowlands, but a boat ride is quite the opposite—it’s wetlands and wildlife, history and nature. Get an up-close look at one of New Jersey’s hidden gems this summer by hopping aboard a Hackensack Riverkeeper eco-cruise—a 2.5-hour boat ride that traverses the region’s various waterways, channels and marshes. “We started this program to show people the wildlife and teach them about the history and importance of the Meadowlands,” says Capt. Hugh Carola, who has been leading eco-cruises for more than 15 years. “We wanted to educate everyone—one class, one garden club, one seniors group, one scout pack at a time—and show the many species of birds, reptiles and other creatures that thrive here.”

“Being out on the water and seeing hundreds of egrets with the Manhattan skyline in the background is a wonderful juxtaposition!”

If you build it, they will come. They’re banking on that to happen in Hackensack, where a new performing arts center is expected to attract crowds to a revitalized downtown. Plans to repurpose the former Masonic Temple at the corner of Atlantic and State streets into a 224-seat state-of-the-art theater are underway, with a grand opening of the Hackensack Performing Arts Center anticipated for early next year. “This is ridiculously exciting for all of us,” says Greg Liosi, director of the Hackensack Cultural Arts Center, a smaller venue on Broadway, outside the city’s main business district. “A new facility like this will draw patrons to Hackensack who will want to do something before or after the show. It will be a showcase for all of our restaurants and other great places.” No doubt it will also be a boost for the theater companies that currently use the smaller center on Broadway. Organizations like The Company, Hackensack Theatre Company, Teaneck New Theatre and New Vision Players are “excited” by the idea of moving into the bigger facility, according to Liosi. He adds that the new venue, with its “beautiful lobbies, raked seating and big stage,” can accommodate larger acts. The city has already earmarked several weeks next year in the new arts center to host “concerts, headliners and national podcasts,” Liosi says. “We’ll invest to bring in names that are recognizable to all.” Follow the progress of the center at uppermain.org.

Come for the brew, stay for the view

Capt. Hugh Carola There are three cruise itineraries from which to choose. Meadowlands Discovery is the organization’s original environmental education tour and it’s perfect for those who enjoy viewing wildlife and wetlands. On Boating Through Bergen you’ll travel from the southern Meadowlands to Hackensack while discussing the area’s maritime history. And Excursion Around the Bay takes you down the Hackensack River to Newark Bay. “Meadowlands Discovery is our bread-and-butter tour, and doing Newark Bay and seeing all the barges and tugboats in the harbor is really sweet for me too,” Carola says. “Being out on the water and seeing hundreds of egrets with the Manhattan skyline in the background is a wonderful juxtaposition!” Sign up for one of the eco-cruises and see for yourself. Cruises are scheduled in advance and are open to all ages. Tickets range from $10 to $30. To make a reservation or to find out more, visit hacken sackriverkeeper.org.

You can grab a cup of coffee at the Kuppi Coffee Company in Edgewater, but there’s much more to drink, eat and see at the new java joint. A former hair salon, the rustic space is divided into three areas: an artisan coffee bar up front, communal workspace for those with coffee and computers in tow, and a lounge area in the rear. Your taste buds are in for a treat: Kuppi exclusively brews George Howell Coffee from Massachusetts and teas from In Pursuit of Tea. Dress your drink with a creamer from New York’s Battenkill Valley, then pair it

with pastries straight from Balthazar Bakery and Dough Doughnuts in New York City. Also on the menu are sandwiches, salads and gluten-free sweets. On one particular Sunday in June, they offered delectable chocolate cupcakes and chocolate pumpkin cake. If you look away from your laptop, stare outside the back window for an unobstructed view of the Hudson River. Better yet, get a little fresh air and walk along the waterside deck. LOCAL BUZZ

From Park Avenue to Leonia It started a decade ago with a handful of abstract pieces on a cozy halfacre plot of land in Leonia. Soon, art starting popping up all over town—a shiny chrome trumpet player here, a rainbow-colored feline there, a whatchamacallit across the street. Now, the artscape is bigger and better than ever. This is Sculpture for Leonia, a borough-wide public display of artwork donated by both local and international artists. Today, there are more than 50 pieces peppered throughout downtown Leonia. Its most recent installation, “Moments in a Stream,” is on loan from renowned German artist Ewerdt Hilgemann. The exhibit, which was previously part of a public display along Park Avenue in Manhattan, features seven stainless steel sculptures that range from eight to 20 feet in height. Each piece was created using an intricate

vacuum process that “implodes” the steel into unusual shapes. In addition to the unique nature of the new exhibit, the enormity of it sets it apart from the other art, says Barbara Mitrani, president of Sculpture for Leonia, noting that two flatbed trucks and special equipment were needed for transportation and installation. Check out Hilgemann’s project at the corner of Station Parkway and Fort Lee Road, then take a stroll through town to see all of the works. Be sure to visit the Erika and David Boyd Sculpture Garden on Broad Avenue, where Sculpture for Leonia began. “We can’t believe it has been 10 years,” Mitrani says. “Many thanks go to all of the people and the organizations that have helped us over the years.” Find out more at sculpture forleonia.org.

Yvonne Marki of Harrington Park and a group of girlfriends recently headed to the Golden State for a week-long road trip along the coast. Their journey started in San Francisco, where they visited landmarks like the Golden Gate Bridge and Muir Woods and “ate amazing food, especially the Mexican food,” she says. But the best part of the trip was the drive along the central coast. “It was really a life-changing experience,” says Marki. “Big Sur is something everyone should see and experience in their lifetime.” The next time you hit the road, take the latest issue of Bergen Health & Life with you. At your destination, take a photo of yourself and your traveling companions holding the magazine in front of an iconic site. Send it to us and we may publish it! Email editor@wainscotmedia.com.

Dog: Rookie, 7 years old, Chihuahua and pug mix Owners: Stanley and Stella Lenkiewicz of Paramus Rookie was adopted in June 2014 from the Second Chance Pet Adoption League and has warmed up to his new family, especially Stanley and Stella’s grandson Diego (pictured). As his name suggests, Rookie has a youthful spirit—he plays fetch with his squeaky ball before breakfast and chases chipmunks and squirrels in the backyard. “He’s also known for coming over and nudging you with his head when he wants some extra playtime,” Stanley reports.

Cat: Munchie, 5 years old, Bengal Owners: Stevi Shields and her daughter Marisa,

11, of Ridgewood Exotic Munchie is one of a kind. “She doesn’t meow, she chirps like a bird,” reports Stevi (pictured). And she’s smart—when Munchie first moved in she figured out how to open the door to the attic and began hanging out between the floor and the ceiling. “We installed a lock on the door, but it took all of 15 minutes for her to unlock it,” says Stevi. “So we had to switch to child safety locks!” Think your furry friend is the cutest in Bergen County? High-fat vs low-fat dairy

No longer in the rear

The butt is not taking a back seat anymore. Surgical procedures involving the buttocks are up since 2013—98 percent for implants and 44 percent for lifts.

Eat cereal to stay healthy

Folks who ate a daily serving of cereal were less likely to die of heart disease, diabetes and digestive cancer—24 percent, 30 percent and 13 percent, respectively—than those who ate none. Scientists theorize that the fiber in cereal keeps weight, inflammation and cholesterol in check.

Stage fright, begone

The number of times more likely women are to get osteoporosis than men. Perhaps women’s lighter, thinner bones are part of the reason.

Want to cure your anxiety before a big presentation? Telling yourself, “I’m excited” instead of “I’m calm” can improve performance. How? Research shows that it helps you feel more confident.

A recent study of 3,000 adults found that those who consumed the most full-fat dairy products had a significantly lower risk—almost 50 percent—of developing diabetes. While the study does not prove a cause and effect, it does point to avoiding food choices based on a single nutrient. —Circulation

Cut stroke risk with chocolate

Go ahead, feed that sweet tooth. People who ate about a half ounce of milk or dark chocolate daily had a 22 percent lower risk of stroke than folks who abstained. Study authors suggest that the flavonoids in the cacao and the calcium and fatty acids in the milk might be the reason as these are thought to maintain healthy blood lipid levels and blood pressure. —Heart

HAIR CARE

THE

MANE EVENT DON’T LET A DIP IN THE POOL OR AN OCEAN SWIM DAMAGE YOUR LUSTROUS LOCKS. HERE’S HOW TO PROTECT YOUR HAIR THIS SUMMER.

20

Your hair shouldn’t pay the price for your fun in the sun. And it won’t—if you follow this advice from Angela Alba, hairstylist and owner of The B Hive Organic Salon in Hillsdale. “Hair is like a sponge; if you try to use a wet sponge to absorb water, it won’t work,” she says. “Hair works the same way. Before hopping into a pool or the ocean, rinse your hair with clean, fresh water so that it won’t absorb the saltwater, chlorine and chemicals.” If you forget to rinse, use clarifying hair products to combat the effects of saltwater and chlorine. And be sure to “use a deep conditioner once a week to moisturize and rejuvenate the hair—a mashed up ripe avocado works wonders due to its fatty acids,” says Alba.

face time!

Just as your wardrobe changes with the seasons, so should your makeup. You’ll be ready for warm weather with these tips from a few of our favorite local makeup artists.

play up those peepers Long days at the beach and late summer nights could leave you with tired-looking eyes. Here’s an easy fix: “Brush a highlighting shadow under the brow bone and in the inner corners of your eyes,” advises Brittany Bell Spencer, senior makeup artist at Lilly’s Blow Dry & Makeup Lounge in Oakland. “This will automatically brighten and ‘open’ your eyes while still keeping your makeup light for summertime.” And don’t forget mascara. You may want to switch to a waterproof brand when the mercury rises—it’s the easiest way to avoid dreaded raccoon eyes. If you can’t part with your favorite tube, brush a waterproof formula on your lower lashes only.

HIGHLIGHT THE CHEEKBONES Lighten up makeup in summer and save the heavy contouring for nighttime and special occasions, suggests Daniela Musano, makeup artist and owner of Araya Rebirth in Ridgewood. During the day, “go with a lighter color of blush on the top of the cheekbones, then apply a highlighter to create an illuminating effect. It will give you a red carpet glow.” If you already have a natural glow from the sun, skip the blush and use just the highlighter.

FLAUNT YOUR POUT No matter what you slip on your lips this season, first prep your pout with a scrub. Try this DIY version from Whitney Diacono, makeup artist and owner of Bisous Beauty Bar in Englewood. “Mix brown sugar with a little bit of honey and gently scrub your lips to remove any dead skin,” she says. “Rinse with water and pat dry.” Now you’re ready for color. “One trend for summer is a bold matte lip,” says Spencer of Lilly’s Blow Dry & Makeup Lounge. “I recommend an orangey-red shade, which is really on trend right now and looks great with any skin tone.”

What is the mission statement of your practice? The goal is to provide high-quality service to each and every patient. Our office uses the latest in technology and treatment procedures, both of which make the visit easier and more comfortable. We want to help every patient attain the smile they’ve always dreamed of.

What sets you apart from other dentists? ANGELA AARON

D.D.S.

• American Dental Association She has an established reputation as an excellent dental care provider and has quickly become a leading dentist in North Jersey. Dr. Aaron is the “Go To” specialist for protecting, restoring, and enhancing smiles of all ages, no matter the problem. Her beautiful, clean and modern office offers state of the art technology to provide superior dental care and unsurpassed patient comfort. Dr. Aaron and her staff consistently strive to demonstrate their dedication to a high standard of care through proper diagnosis, follow through, and a genuine commitment to help all their patients. SERVICES OFFERED: • Root Canals • Extractions • Cleanings and Gum Treatment • Teeth Grinding Relief • Crowns and Bridges • Implant Restorations • Custom Sports Guards • Lumineers • Invisalign • Porcelain Veneers • Complete Smile Makeovers • Tooth Colored/Cosmetic Fillings • Most Emergencies Seen Within 24 Hours

Having personally experienced a traumatic visit to a dentist in the past, I understand the anxiety that some patients associate with the dental office. This is exactly what motivated me to enter this field. I honestly wanted to make it much more pleasurable for others, and have made it a mission that every patient has a positive experience during their visit in our office. The approach we offer is highly personalized, emphasizing quality over quantity. We stay connected with patients and can be reached during holidays and weekends, if needed.

How do you feel about educating your patients? I feel very strongly about giving my patients options, whether it is about treatment specifics or financing. Patients need to be comfortable with their own decisions, and each treatment plan is based on a personal assessment. The more patients know, the more satisfied they feel.

“Our smile is our logo. Let’s make your smile the best it can be.”

What is your specialty? My area of expertise includes restorative and cosmetic dentistry which is performed in a comforting setting.

Why should patients choose you as their dentist? The passion I have for dentistry is what makes my work so different from others. Because I give my patients my individual and undivided attention, it is obvious to my patients that they are my main focus. I have many dentists who see me for their own dental treatment and there is no better compliment than that. I offer my patients an upscale spa-like atmosphere. I have a six chair office, with a remarkable staff of ten.

How individualized is your treatment method? Every patient’s needs in the office are individual and therefore the treatment must be customized to that patient. Often, treatment depends on finances, which is why we try and accommodate our patients as best as we can. We try to give everyone the best possibility of affording their treatment by offering in-office financing options, as well as third party options. Our focus is to treat our patients with the upmost care.

COSMETIC DENTISTRY

What are some of the benefits of cosmetic dentistry? When cosmetic dentistry is designed around health and proper function, the effects last for a long time, contributing to a person’s well-being. Positive changes in a smile enhance one’s attractiveness, providing a patient with increased selfconfidence which reflects in their personal and professional life. Being able to smile without worrying about your teeth can be life-changing. Cosmetic enhancement rebuilds a smile using procedures like whitening, edge reshaping and replacement of old fillings and missing or broken teeth.

The entire dental team is committed to treating each patient in an individualized, respectful manner with a goal of total satisfaction. Dr. Cassandra and her staff incorporate the most recent technology during exams and treatment. From consultation to the final treatment, patients’ goals are addressed in an organized fashion and performed in a comforting, modern environment.

How do you help your patients make their dental decisions? The key is listening! By listening, I understand what a patient doesn’t like about his smile. After taking time getting to know a person’s goals, I take a series of photographs which I review with the patient. We look at the color, shape, size and position of the teeth. We also look at the face, and the lips since they frame the smile. We then explore options that will result in the desired smile.

What do your patients say about you? My patients call me a perfectionist. They appreciate the time I invest to properly evaluate, diagnose and treat and explain. Patients know that my philosophy is to be minimally invasive. My patients love their new smiles!

What is the latest advance in cosmetic dentistry? We have acquired an innovative system to produce lab-quality inlays/onlays, crowns, bridges and veneers in a matter of hours as opposed to weeks. The Planmeca FIT system is the most accurate, efficient restoration technologies now available. You can leave our office smiling from ear to ear the same day you come in for your restoration.

What sets your practice apart? Because of our reputation for helping every patient recover their self-confidence with a new, beautiful smile, even dental specialists come to us as cosmetic dental patients. We are a full-service, state-of-the-art dental facility offering the highest level of quality.

How will a porcelain veneer help fix my smile? We now have new technology, called daVinci Digital Imaging, that allows us to show you what you can look like with a smile makeover even before you have the procedure. This way you can see how a porcelain veneer will conceal a chip, crack, stain or gap so you can finally feel great about your smile.

COSMETIC DENTISTRY

How do I choose the right cosmetic dentistry specialist? One of the most important, and confusing aspects of cosmetic dentistry is a dentist’s training. A general dentist who is formally and extensively trained to perform reconstructive dentistry is a prosthodontist. As one of the few boardcertified prosthodontists not only in New Jersey, but in the country, I am highly trained to expertly restore form and function from the simplest to the most complex of cosmetic dental cases. In addition, I choose to be a sole practitioner rather than part of a corporate dental office so that I can take the time to properly care for every patient showing our deepest respect and compassion. Whether you need a single implant or a full smile makeover, you should never hesitate to ask your dentist about their training in cosmetic dentistry. Call for a consultation and get started on your new, beautiful smile.

What is the main reason patients choose you as their dentist? That’s an easy question to answer. At Gentle Dentistry, we offer what patients want, namely personalized care that is minimally invasive and technology-driven. Everything we do in our practice has one goal. We want to bring patients back to the prior level of confidence they possessed before their teeth became a problem. It can be said that our staff practices “emotional” dentistry, because restorations are often life-changing. At Gentle Dentistry we treat both adults and children with the same dedication. Dr. Spector and Dr. Migdal have more than 24 years of experience in the placement and restoration of Dental Implants. All Implant procedures are done in-house with a 3D minimally invasive technique and the office has a multidecade relationship with one of the top aesthetic labs in the country. We provide the aesthetic outcome that the patients expect.

What is the main focus in your practice? We concentrate on both laser and implant dentistry. Two major advantages of using laser dentistry are that it allows patients to have work completed with little or no anesthesia and it speeds healing. Utilizing implants makes it possible to replace missing teeth without having to harm existing healthy teeth.

How does your way of doing things help you to stand out amongst other practitioners in the area?

DONALD J. ROMAN

D.M.D.

I believe that it is absolutely necessary to treat each patient with the utmost respect and we encourage our patients to take an active role when making decisions about treatment. Our practice creates a personalized plan that is catered to each patient’s needs, desires and budget.

How do you know that your patients are satisfied? We have a direct and foolproof way of finding out. We simply ask them! My staff routinely asks whether a patient’s needs have been met and encourages him or her to tell us what we could have done better.

HERE’S WHAT YOU MISSED! EXPERTS FROM ENGLEWOOD HOSPITAL AND MEDICAL CENTER SHARED A WEALTH OF KNOWLEDGE AT BERGEN FAMILY HEALTH DAY, CO-SPONSORED BY BERGEN HEALTH & LIFE. SEE SOME OF THE HIGHLIGHTS BELOW.

‘Reduce your risk for heart and vascular problems’ Monitor diabetes, high blood pressure and high cholesterol, particularly if you are a smoker. These are the greatest risk factors of stroke, says Thomas Bernik, M.D., chief of vascular surgery. “These are things you can try to control,” he says. n Difficulty walking can be an early indicator of vascular disease. Consider ultrasound testing to differentiate the disease from arthritis and other ailments. n Know your family history. “If your mother or father have had an aneurysm, it’s possible that will be passed down,” he says.

Photos by Kathy King

n

‘Learn how to save a life’ n When

help isn’t immediately available during an emergency, your quick thinking might be the difference between life and death. “The longer you wait to treat a heart attack, the more damage is done to the heart,” say EMTs. n Recognize the symptoms: Men may experience shortness of breath, pressure on the chest, and pain in the left arm and jaw. Women may feel shortness of breath and pain at the bottom of the sternum. n Perform basic CPR or use an automated external defibrillator on someone who has gone into cardiac arrest until help arrives.

‘Chronic pain? Food can be your best ally’ If you suffer from chronic pain—arthritis, fibromyalgia, neuropathic pain—a change in diet might be the key to feeling better, says Despina Psillides, M.D., medical director of the Graf Center for Integrative Medicine. n Chronic pain can be caused by inflammation, and many types of foods can cause inflammation, including wheat, sugar, artificial sweeteners and gluten. n So what foods should you eat? Try whole grains, fruits, vegetables, omega 3-rich fatty fish and olive oil, Dr. Psillides recommends. n

‘Breathe easy’ The best prescription for healthy lungs is to stop smoking, advises pulmonologist Srikant Kondapaneni, M.D. Better yet—don’t start. n Improve your diet, and exercise regularly. You’ll be out of breath faster if you’re overweight, he says. n Go ahead and take over-the-counter medicine for a cough, but see your doctor if your symptoms extend beyond 10 days. “Make sure it’s not a bacterial or viral illness,” says Dr. Kondapaneni. n Don’t ignore conditions like snoring and sleep apnea, which can lead to heart problems and stroke. n

housing costs

Easy access to NYC and an excellent school system make real estate in this little borough a sound investment. The median home value is $604,600, according to Zillow—up 2.4 percent from last year.

Great schools, diverse real estate are part of the appeal. YOU CAN’T MISS IT—THE 570-TON BOULDER SITTING on the side of Rock Road. It’s thought to have been left behind by a receding glacier at the end of the last Ice Age, and it’s how this Norman Rockwellesque town got its name. The Rock is one of the highlights of real estate agents’ tours of Glen Rock, which is an easy sell thanks to its excellent school system, convenient access to Manhattan (via two train lines), vibrant tree-lined downtown and wide variety of house styles in an equally wide range of prices. About downtown: Dozens of unique shops and restaurants line the main street, Rock Road, and parking is free! Some of our favorite spots include The Curious Reader for

kids’ books and The Grow-Cery for toys, Shades of Soho for gorgeous lighting, Sweet Love & Cake for all kinds of sugary indulgences and Rock Ridge Pharmacy, where you can pick up a gift along with your prescription. Just 2.7 square miles in area and home to nearly 12,000 residents, Glen Rock is a close-knit community. Residents have a reputation for supporting the town’s numerous annual events, including the Family Fun Fair, Fall Street Fair, and Fourth of July parade. In the summer, many folks can be found at the spectacular municipal pool complex, which includes an Olympic-sized pool with a 25-foot-high slide and a children’s pool boasting a dozen fun water features.

A hillsdale designer transforms a dark paneled space into a bright, expansive area for entertaining—and hanging out with the family.

When searching for inspiration for a 700-square-foot living and dining room renovation, Hillsdale-based interior designer Jennifer Pacca came up with a classic-meets-contemporary motif after she and the Montvale homeowner picked out a pair of area rugs—one popped with pattern and color, while the other was understated and neutral. “They like a classic design, but were open to suggestions,” says Pacca. “And a more contemporary look is in keeping with the style of the house.” To begin, Pacca stripped the space of its “ski lodge” design, ripping up old carpeting and

Exposed beams and dark wood flooring create a rustic feel in this Montvale living room, where contemporary furnishings keep the space fresh, says interior designer Jennifer Pacca of Jennifer Pacca Interiors.

removing dark cedar paneling from the walls and ceiling. A wall separating the living room and dining area also was removed. “The dining room was so narrow that it made sense to create one big, open floor plan,” explains Pacca, noting that the family loves to entertain and needed room for everyone to spread out. Sheetrock was installed throughout the newly expanded space and painted a soft “peachy beige”—the tone of the dining room rug as well as other rooms in the home. Dark engineered wood flooring complements the solid wood ceiling beams, which were spared during demolition. “The floors and beams give the room a rustic feeling, but we brought in contemporary pieces to keep it looking fresh,” she says. Pacca worked with the homeowner to find club chairs and a sofa with nailhead trim for the living room, where the patterned area

48

rug and bold throw pillows “pop with color” and offset the otherwise neutral tones. Unique objets d’art adorn the accent tables. In the dining area, a colorful landscape mural complements the grid of nine smaller works hanging on an adjacent wall. “I wanted to break it up a bit—I didn’t want to hang two big paintings.” John Zdankowski of Hillsdale-based Kitchen and Bath Renovators constructed a built-in bench and wall unit, and also transformed the old brick fireplace, which now features a mantel with a flat-screen television and wainscot treatment above it. “We designed the mantel to become a focal point—not just a mantel with a TV hanging over it,” Pacca says. “The built-ins allow the owners to display some pretty pieces from their collection as well as photos of the family.” The result? The homeowners are happy. And a designer can’t ask for much more than that.

Opposite: When family and friends gather in the living room, their attention is immediately drawn to the fireplace. The design team created a mantel with wainscot accents to make it the focal point of the space—even when the wall-mounted television is turned off. This page: A built-in window seat flanked by shelves allows the homeowners to display family photos and mementos. Roman shades “provide privacy when needed and are beautiful and light-filtering at the same time,” says Pacca.

Grilled Shrimp with Watermelon and Feta INGREDIENTS n 16 raw whole jumbo shrimp n 2 lemons n 3 garlic cloves, sliced n ½ to 1 tsp. crushed red pepper n ½ to 1 tsp. dried oregano n Salt and freshly ground black pepper n 1 small watermelon n 1 cup feta cheese, crumbled n 4 scallions, sliced n ¼ cup fruity extra virgin olive oil n A good handful of Greek basil or mint leaves

Serves 3 to 4

DIRECTIONS n Start by marinating the shrimp: Put the shrimp into a large glass or ceramic bowl and add the juice and finely grated zest of 1 lemon, garlic, crushed red pepper, oregano and a good seasoning of salt and black pepper. Mix well, cover and let marinate in the fridge for a couple of hours. While the shrimp are marinating, cut the watermelon into chucks or slices and remove the skin. Arrange on a large platter, cover and chill in the fridge. Preheat a grill or a ridged grill pan on the stove over medium to high heat. Cook the shrimp for 1 to 2 minutes on each side until cooked through and nicely charred. Arrange the shrimp over the chilled watermelon and scatter with the feta and scallions. Drizzle the olive oil over the whole dish, top with a flourish of Greek basil or mint and serve with extra lemon to squeeze over.

Goat’s Milk Labneh with Carrot, Beet and Pomegranate Salad

Serves 4 to 6

INGREDIENTS n 18 oz. full-fat goat’s milk yogurt n Salt and freshly ground black pepper n Bunch of small carrots n Bunch of mixed small beets n 3 Tbs. olive oil n 3 garlic cloves, unpeeled n 1 sprig thyme, leaves picked n 2 Tbs. coarsely chopped flat-leaf parsley n 1 Tb. coarsely chopped mint n Seeds from 1 pomegranate n ½ cup sliced pistachios n 1 Tb. pomegranate molasses n 1 to 2 Tbs. pistachio or extra virgin olive oil n ½ tsp. ground sumac

DIRECTIONS n Season the yogurt with salt and black pepper. Line a finemesh nylon sieve with a cheesecloth and scoop the seasoned yogurt into the sieve. Suspend it over a bowl, cover with plastic wrap and leave in the fridge for 24 hours to allow the water to drain from the yogurt. The result is a soft cheese called labneh. n Preheat the oven to 375°F. Scrub the carrots and beets and remove the stalks and leaves. Cut any large carrots in half and add to a roasting pan, drizzle with the oil and season with salt and black pepper. Tuck the garlic cloves in with the carrots, scatter with the thyme and roast on the middle rack of the oven for about 30 minutes, depending on size, until tender. n Cook the unpeeled beets in a saucepan of boiling salted water until tender, drain and leave until cool enough to handle. Peel and cut into bite-sized wedges. n Put the carrots and beets into a bowl, add the chopped herbs, squeeze in the roasted garlic from its skin and season with salt and black pepper. Mix the veggies gently using your hands and arrange on a serving platter. Dot the labneh over the top and scatter with the pomegranate seeds and pistachios. Drizzle over the pomegranate molasses and pistachio or olive oil and season with a sprinkling of the sumac. Serve immediately.

Caramelized Mandarin Salad INGREDIENTS n 8–10 mandarins or clementines— choose firm ones, which are easier to peel n ¾ cup superfine sugar n Juice of 2 large oranges n 1 to 2 tsp. rosewater or orange flower water n Seeds from ½ pomegranate n ½ cup shelled pistachios, coarsely chopped n 2 to 3 sprigs mint, coarsely chopped

Serves 4 to 6

DIRECTIONS n For a more elegant look to the finished salad, rather than using your hands to peel the mandarins, cut a thin slice off the top and bottom of each and sit them upright on the cutting board. Using a sharp, serrated knife, and working from top to bottom, cut the peel away in strips using a swaying action. Try to cut all of the pith away, leaving the fruit in a near barrel shape. Cut each mandarin in half through the middle and arrange in a serving dish. n To make the caramel, put the sugar in a heavy-bottomed saucepan, add 2 Tbs. of cold water, and set over low to medium heat to dissolve the sugar without stirring. Increase the heat to medium, bring the syrup to a boil and cook until it becomes amber-colored, swirling the pan to ensure that it cooks evenly.

n Meanwhile, heat the orange juice until just below boiling in a separate saucepan or in a bowl in the microwave. Slide the caramel pan off the heat and carefully add the hot juice—the caramel will splutter furiously, so keep your hands covered by a cloth and your face away from the pan. Return to the heat to melt any hardened caramel, bring to a boil and simmer for 1 minute. Remove from the heat, add the rosewater or orange flower water and let cool for a few minutes. n Pour the caramel over the mandarins and stir gently to coat the fruit. Leave for 1 hour or so for the caramel to flavor the little oranges and vice versa. n Scatter with the pomegranate seeds, pistachios and mint, and serve.

all about

POWER FOOD

EDAMAME

PERFECT FOR SNACKING, THIS FUZZY LITTLE GREEN BEAN IS A HEALTHY HANDFUL—AND FUN TO EAT TOO. IF YOU’VE EVER EATEN AT A JAPANESE restaurant, you’ve likely sampled edamame (pronounced eh-dah-MA-may). These young green soybeans are typically served in their fuzzy pod, steamed and sprinkled with coarse salt, and are eaten by dragging the pod between the teeth, releasing the beans. The nutty, buttery flavor and somewhat crunchy texture make edamame a popular snack or appetizer, but the beans are also low in calories, high in protein and fiber, and incredibly easy to prepare at home.

POWER UP One cup of unshelled edamame rings in at just 190 calories and yields a hefty eight grams of fiber. It’s also a complete protein (meaning it contains all nine essential amino acids), boasting 17 grams a cup—about as much as three eggs. Edamame is an excellent source of folate, manganese and vitamin K too, as well as a good source of copper, phosphorous, magnesium, thiamin and iron. And, according to the American Institute for Cancer Research, it contains a variety of phytochemicals that may be beneficial in preventing and fighting cancer. So munch away!

BUY/ STORE/ SERVE Edamame can be purchased fresh, frozen and dry-roasted with various seasonings (sea salt, wasabi) for snacking right out of

56

the bag. The fresh variety—available during late summer at Asian grocery stores like Mitsuwa Marketplace in Edgewater—lasts only a day or two in the fridge. Once cooked, the pods can be stored in the refrigerator for up to a few days. Frozen edamame, on the other hand, will keep in the freezer for about a year. To prepare, boil the fresh or frozen pods for about four minutes, drain and immerse in an ice bath to stop the cooking. (You don’t want them to get mushy!) Sprinkle with coarse salt and, if you’d like, other spices such as garlic or cayenne. Or remove the beans from the pods (gently squeeze with your fingers to release them) and incorporate into your favorite dips, salads and stir-fries.

Some folks prefer to steam edamame, which is the way it is prepared in many Asian restaurants—purists argue this method retains more of the nutrients. To steam, place a steamer basket into a large saucepan and fill the pan with about an inch of water, making certain that the water does not touch the basket. Bring the water to a boil and place the frozen edamame in the basket. Cover with a lid and steam until tender, about two minutes. Another option: Edamame can be shelled and roasted (350°F for 30 to 40 minutes) with extra-virgin olive oil, salt and pepper.

DID YOU KNOW? Edamame comes from the Japanese words eda (branch or stem) and mame (beans), translating to “beans on a branch” or “stem beans” because the beans were often sold while still attached to the stem. Although edamame has been enjoyed in East Asian countries for more than seven centuries, it didn’t become popular in the United States until the 1980s when a TV miniseries, Shogun, brought about a boom in Japanese food and culture in California, according to the 2009 book History of Edamame, Green Vegetable Soybeans, and Vegetable-Type Soybeans. And the word edamame didn’t appear in the MerriamWebster dictionary until 2008. —LIZ DONOVAN

Why can’t the sharp pains in my foot and leg be correctly diagnosed? [A] Often times, nerve conduction studies miss a diagnoses of functional nerve pain, because at the time of the test, a muscle that typically may compress a nerve is not inflamed or engorged with blood (such as after exercise), and therefore doesn’t compress the nerve as it courses through small openings in the muscle or nearby fascia. Our office often diagnoses these hidden problems. Common causes of nerve pain may be from previous trauma, either from a direct fall; hit on the area or from chronic overuse of the foot or leg; or simply one may have a genetic predisposition to this malady. In these types of foot and leg nerve disorders, scar tissue or fibroses form over the nerve or the tunnel that the nerve courses through gets scarred, inhibiting it from functioning normally. If it’s a sensory nerve, you may feel numbness, tingling or just a sharp, fire-like burning or radiating pain down the leg or in the foot. If it’s a motor (muscle) nerve that’s affected, you may notice a weakness when you push off or when you lift your foot or toes upwards. During my extensive exam, I can clinically decipher which nerve is involved. Our office is the only NJ member of U.S. Neuropathy Centers and has advanced training to diagnose various types of localized nerve conditions. We perform short-acting “selective” nerve blocks of each individualized nerve to prevent it from firing. If all the pain immediately goes away, then we have diagnosed the exact pinched nerve. For treatment, we provide micro-nerve surgery (performed under a microscope or under loop magnification glasses) or advanced non-invasive treatments to reverse symptoms, including the MicroVas Nerve Machine, nerve medications, and injections to reduce scar tissue. If you are experiencing pain, or foot/leg weakness…even if you have been treated by others, call us today for a proper diagnosis and care.

[A] Today, we have minimally invasive surgical techniques that allow surgeons to limit how disruptive a surgical procedure will be on the body. When we perform surgeries in a minimally invasive fashion there is much less disruption of normal tissues compared to what one would see in a traditional open surgical technique. Minimally invasive spine surgery allows the patient to experience less post-surgical pain, less blood loss, fewer infections and a more rapid recovery. In addition, today’s technology enables us to achieve a number of goals with minimally invasive surgical procedures that can often be done on an out-patient basis. While studying a patient’s spine condition we always assess what portions of the condition can be addressed in a minimally invasive fashion. Whenever possible, we implement these techniques into our surgical planning to optimize a patient’s recovery time and return to normal activities. At Comprehensive Spine Care, P.A., our group of Board Certified Orthopaedic Spine Surgeons have expertise in all aspects of spinal conditions and extensive training in the most advanced minimally invasive and cutting-edge spine interventions. Why are dental implants becoming so popular? [A] The stability, natural feel and permanence of a dental implant makes this procedure one of the best options for replacing a missing tooth. In addition, implants prevent facial sagging and stop bone deterioration that ultimately causes the loss of additional teeth. Implants are now a routine and predictable procedure for most patients. Many patients have told me that having permanent implants has transformed their lives. Patients who were once embarrassed to smile or enjoy certain foods in social settings regain confidence with dental implants. Today, implants can be placed in one day allowing the patient to leave the office with a beautiful smile rather than having to wait months to heal. In the 30-plus years I’ve practiced dentistry, I’ve experienced numerous advancements in the field of dental implant technology. We routinely perform bone grafts, sinus lifts and other procedures, such as cost-effective Revitalize®. These advances, along with improved materials, allow patients who might not have been candidates before to be successfully treated. As leaders in implant technology, we handle both simple and complicated cases, many of which are referred to us from other doctors. Our office serves as a teaching facility on cutting-edge implant practices. We are also a full spectrum dental office, offering a plethora of services from pediatrics to orthodontia, to laser and cosmetic dentistry for our patients’ convenience. What is it about a youthful female face that we find attractive? [A] Let’s think about why we find the youthful female face so attractive. It is not excessively pulled tight. It doesn’t have shiny, thinned out skin. It does have volume in the right places. So when I do face lifting operations, I look to restore volume and internally lift tissues so that there is only moderate tightness in the facial skin. The neck itself, however, can be pulled tightly. I accomplish restoration of volume three ways. Around the eyes, I separate out the herniated fat bags and transpose (move) them around to fill nearby hollow voids (such as the lid cheek junction). I also liposuction fat from the abdomen or thighs and reinject it in small amounts into key areas of the face (cheeks, jawline, temples, lips) to give natural, youthful volume. Finally, I elevate and re-suspend the fallen internal layers of muscle, fascia and fat (SMAS) back to a youthful location in the cheek and neck which eliminates jowl sag and neck bands. Finally, the skin is re-draped on the face, tightened and excess skin is eliminated. My website and office photo books show hundreds of views of before and after cases. Patients come from across the country and internationally for this procedure. I recently had a patient who is in the film industry come to me from Los Angeles for this very approach. To me, it is very gratifying to look at a healed patient who looks like she went back in time.

ASK THE HEALTH PROFESSIONAL

Why are anxiety disorders so prevalent and what is the most effective treatment? [A] It’s hard to determine if the increase in anxiety disorders is a result of the awareness we now have of mental disorders and/or the stressors of the modern world. It is estimated that 30 percent of adults between the ages of 18 to 54 experience some type of anxiety disorder. Anxiety in children is now the most prevalent illness among this group affecting as many as one in four children and teens. Treatment varies depending on the specific anxiety disorder. However, research shows that the best treatment is therapy alone or therapy in conjunction with medication, but not medication alone. Therapy teaches clients specific tools to manage anxiety, such as cognitive-behavioral techniques, breathing exercises and meditation. With children, ageappropriate play therapy or art therapy can be used. We take an integrative holistic approach with every client, making available all appropriate therapeutic approaches to ensure the best outcome.

What’s the difference between medical and cosmetic blepharoplasty?

Janet Neigel, M.D., F.A.C.S. Michael Richard, M.D.

• Board-certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology • 10 Best in Client Satisfaction, American Institute of Plastic Surgeons 2016

[A] Blepharoplasty, or eyelid surgery, restores the appearance of the upper, lower or both eyelids. There are two types of blepharoplasty. While both types of blepharoplasty result in a more youthful appearance, blepharoplasty is considered medically necessary when the upper eyelid skin hangs over the eyelashes creating uncomfortable, blocked or blurred vision. Cosmetic blepharoplasty aims to aesthetically correct eyelid aging by removing loose skin and excess fat from around the eyes. There are only a small group of board-certified ophthalmologists in the country who specialize in oculoplastic surgery who are technical and artistic experts in medical and cosmetic blepharoplasty. Find out with a complimentary consultation using this ad, how Dr. Neigel or Dr. Richard can make you look years younger.

secluded st. vincent

This Caribbean hideaway is the perfect place to make like a stage star—or a sea turtle. By Rita Guarna

Before St. Vincent and the Grenadines—100 MILES west of Barbados—served as the setting for the swashbuckler film series Pirates of the Caribbean, this island chain with the cumbersome name was known primarily to yachties and seclusion-seeking music and movie stars. But the luxurious, all-inclusive Buccament Bay Resort no doubt will appeal to other Caribbean connoisseurs on the prowl for some under-the-radar fun. And the good times come in several notable flavors. The Harlequin Performing Arts Academy, for example, gives guests the rare opportunity to be coached (yes, it’s included in the price) in voice, acting and dance by world-class professionals. Pros live on site for three-month stints. Recently, Phil Cavill, an actor, vocal coach and West End star—who was asked to audition for and was cast as Jean Valjean in the West End production of Les Misérables, the world’s most successful musical—and Netta Evans, an actress, drama coach and founder of The Windmill Theatre School in London, were helping guests channel their inner divas. The duo had budding protégés first recite silly tongue-twisters (the better to relax them and their vocal cords) such as “the lips, the teeth, the tip of the tongue.” (Go ahead; see if you can repeat it quickly.) This page, from top: St. Vincent is a favorite spot for those seeking seclusion. Volcanic boulders shelter Owia Salt Pond from the swells of the sea, making it a perfect place for snorkeling. Opposite, clockwise from top: Charter a boat and swim with sea turtles at Tobago Cays. A giant Buddah stands guard at Buccament Bay’s spa, ensuring a serene experience. Enjoy a local lager with your sushi at The Bay Beach Club.

If bellowing and breathing exercises aren’t your thing, there’s coaching of another kind thanks to the Pat Cash Tennis Club and Harlequin Soccer Academy, both offering expert tutorials here. For water-sports enthusiasts, there’s snorkeling, kayaking, glass-bottom boat tours and deep-sea fishing, plus diving courses and excursions. The resort also has private-charter access to some of the Grenadines’ most remote beaches (only nine of 32 islands are inhabited), including the uninhabited Tobago Cays, where you can swim with sea turtles. Or enjoy three swimming pools with waiter service, umbrellas and chaises fitted with terry cloth mattress covers that up the pampering ante. (Just when it seems to be getting too hot, ice water and cold towels appear.) Nature lovers will love the trek along the Vermont Nature Trail through a 10,870-acre reserve of lush rain forest with towering ferns, bamboo and tropical flora at the end of the Buccament Valley. Reward yourself afterward with ESPA spa treatments. An array of massages and facials are available in cocoon-like suites, an outdoor pavilion or beachside. Choose between luxury one- and two-bedroom Elaenia Suites or one of the deluxe Beachfront and Garden Villas, which come with private plunge pools, living rooms and expansive bathrooms. Lest guests should have to squeeze out lotions from puny bottles, there are full-size, pump dispensers of moisturizer, body wash, shampoo and conditioner. Canaryyellow beach-cruiser bikes let guests explore (and work off the calories they consume at one of the five restaurants). Don’t care to break a sweat? Golf carts traverse the resort around the clock. Restaurants from Italian to Indian satisfy your gastronomic cravings. Plus there’s a coffee shop and sushi bar for those who prefer grazing. At Jack’s, a classic yet contemporary steakhouse, you’ll dine on delicious local seafood and succulent steaks cooked on a wood-burning grill in the open kitchen. And if you’re an oenophile, you’re in luck. There’s a sensational selection of wines from around the world. Go before the hordes descend. Construction on the brand-new Argyle International Airport is underway, which will make the archipelago easier to visit (now you arrive by boat or fly to Barbados and then connect to a smaller air carrier), and waves of new vacationers will discover its lush shores. But for now, it’s still an offbeat choice, favored by travelers “in the know” and discerning divas, of course.
