WELCOME For many people, this year can’t end soon enough. And certainly, it’s been rough. But if there is a silver lining—and we believe there is—it’s that we’ve all realized what matters most are the people we love. Connections with those we love are what drew both of us to this career in the first place. We are artists at heart, and we relish the idea that jewelry is wearable art that connects people and generations. It serves as a constant reminder of special moments and special bonds. Inside this issue of ACCENT magazine, we feature a handful of amazing Tulsa women who talk about their emotional connections to jewelry. They share how it links them to the people they love—the generations before them and the generations after them. Love of any type, whether it’s between lovers or family members or friends, is truly something to behold. If we can help people capture it in a form that will have meaning for generations to come, we’re very proud to be part of it. Especially this year. If there is any time to celebrate the people we love—and to tell them and show them just how much—it’s now. Wishing you a safe and beautiful holiday season with those you love the most. Cheers, & Michelle Holdgrafer Store Director Sasha Patterson Store Director

cheers to our newest couples! SUSAN ALYSE PHOTOGRAPHY

TAYLOR BLEVINS & TAYLOR SHORTRIDGE Engaged December 21, 2019

THE ASK On our way to brunch, Taylor said he wanted to show me a pretty area that has a view of downtown Tulsa. As we walked down the steps, I saw a blanket laid out with flowers and huge white block letters that spelled out LOVE. With tears in his eyes, he asked to spend forever with me.

THE RING When choosing the engagement ring, the groom wanted a ring that was timeless and sophisticated while still keeping it simple. He loved that the round cut is classic. The diamonds on the band made the ring that much more beautiful.

SHE CAN’T WAIT TO BE WEARING IT WHEN... I walk down the aisle toward my other half and am reminded of all that the ring represents.

THE MOMENT HE KNEW IT WAS FOREVER The moment I knew this was forever was when I realized she was exactly what I needed and couldn’t imagine life without her.

HARRY & NATALIE HARDY

XAVIER DUSSAQ PHOTOGRAPHY

Washington, DC

As was the case for many couples in 2020, COVID forced Natalie and Harry to pivot. They had planned a larger wedding for May 30, but had to cancel. They ultimately hosted a small, backyard ceremony on their original wedding date and rescheduled a bigger event for fall. THE ASK Natalie had always wanted to go to this quaint little winery down in Virginia called Pippin Hill Farm, and I knew that would be the perfect place to pop the question. I had our friends “invite” us down for the week in hopes of throwing her off. When we got there, we walked along the hillside next to the vines, and I asked to her spend forever with me. As soon as I did, her family surprised her all the way from Oklahoma, and we spent the day celebrating at the farm. —Harry

THE RING The ring is so special to me. The original was given to my grandmother by my grandfather. Growing up, I always thought it was the most beautiful ring and hoped I would get to wear something similar one day. When Harry and I began talking about rings, I would always fall back to the style of ring that my grandmother had. Harry worked with my mom to reset and update the ring to fit my style a bit more. My grandmother was my best friend, so getting to wear this small piece of her is beyond special to me. —Natalie

ON SILVER LININGS

It was so important to us to get married on May 30, no matter the size or scale of the wedding. We decided two weeks before that we were going to get married in my parents’ backyard, and quickly pulled everything together. It was so sweet for us to start our new chapter surrounded by our closest family and friends. Although we missed celebrating with a larger group, the moments we created on that day are some we will never forget. —Natalie

PATRICK BASS & HANNAH LONG Engaged August 30, 2019

THE ASK We began our night at dinner where we spent our first date four years ago. Afterward, we went to my parents’ to play family games, and we were both met with blindfolds outside with limited instructions, or so she thought. Once her blindfold was removed, she soon found me on a knee with 20 of our closest family and friends peering from inside!—Patrick

THE RING We did not think we had an opinion on a ring until we went to go look at a few. Donna guided us through the process, and we couldn’t have had a better experience because of her. There was no doubt that this was the right one after seeing the look on Hannah’s face.

SHE CAN’T WAIT TO BE WEARING IT WHEN... We travel and take on adventures, spend time with family and friends, or stay at home with just the two of us.

GRANT CLARY & JESSICA SULLIVAN Engaged June 5, 2020

THE ASK The proposal was planned months in advance and was originally going to be in Chicago, where we met. A big group of family and friends had purchased fl ights and hotels to surprise Jess at one of our favorite bars. But of course, COVID-19 happened, and I had to pivot. So, I set up a beautiful umbrella with flowers and champagne and proposed in our backyard. It was perfect—just us and our dogs for the proposal and a surprise engagement party with our family and friends that evening. –Grant

THE RING We went ring shopping together one time, and we both loved emerald cut for the diamond. It’s timeless and elegant, and when paired with a thin, plain band, the diamond really stands out. I still look at it in awe; it’s a stunning ring. –Jessica

THE MOMENT THEY KNEW IT WAS FOREVER It’s cliché, but we took a trip to Paris about six months into dating, and that sealed the deal. It was a dream vacation full of sightseeing, eating crepes and croissants, and drinking wine at cafes all over the city. Ah, time to go back… –Jessica

GREATEST LESSON YOUR MOTHER TAUGHT YOU? Love always wins.

WHAT DO YOU HOPE YOUR CHILDREN LEARN FROM YOU? I hope I inspire my kiddos to leave each person, place or situation in a better place than they found it.

WHAT’S THE SECRET TO GOOD PARENTING? Shoot—I wish I knew! I know that I cannot do it alone. It takes a team of strong and loving people to raise a child. I am so glad that I have my team to help me along with my three kids. I think it is OK to make mistakes in parenting, as long as you are not too proud to recognize it and do better the next time. Parenting is not easy, but it’s crazy fun.

BEST PART OF BEING A MOM? Watching my kids laugh and have fun with each other and my husband. It most defi nitely does not happen every second of every day, but when they talk and especially laugh together, it is the best.

ANY SPECIAL PIECES OF JEWELRY YOU HOPE TO PASS ON TO YOUR CHILDREN? My husband is the best gift-giver and has given me a special diamond band at the birth of each of my kids. I love wearing them all stacked together, but I plan to pass each one along to each of my kids when the time is right. I also have a special sterling silver charm bracelet that I collected as a little girl. It took me almost 10 years to fi nish it. I have kept is safe for almost 40 years. I am excited to share it with my daughter Brett someday soon!

M I C H E L L E E VA N S

Michelle Evans is a former prenatal intensive care nurse who has used her status as Mrs. Oklahoma and Mrs. America to bring public awareness to the challenges of addiction— something that claimed the life of her brother, Josh Wilson. She is also a model, philanthropist and mother to two daughters and one son.

16

GREATEST LESSON YOUR MOTHER TAUGHT YOU? This woman I get to call Mom is amazing beyond words. She’s the most selfless, hardworking, and the kindest person you’ll ever meet. It’s all because she loves Jesus. She’s taught me so many very important lessons in life. She’s taught me to be humble, kind, and to know my worth, but the greatest lesson she has ever taught me is to love the Lord with all your heart and live for Him.

WHAT DO YOU HOPE YOUR CHILDREN LEARN FROM YOU? I’m going storybook on this one: I hope they remember to have courage and be kind. Have courage to do things that get them out of their comfort zone, to make a difference, to grow, to challenge themselves. To me, that’s when you fi nd out who you are, and who you want to be. I hope they learn kindness. This world is tough, you never know what battles people are facing. You never know how a small act can make or break someone. I hope that they can be a light to others, and be kind.

WHAT ARE THE SECRETS TO GOOD PARENTING? As we sit here on the couch wiped out from a day with three kiddos, my husband says infi nite patience, infi nite energy, and infi nite creativity. I’m going with investing in them. Your children are your biggest investment. Face-to-face talk to them, be with them, hug them. As easy as it is to get caught up with emails, deadlines and meetings, relish the present. You never have this day with them again. Tomorrow they

will be a little older, so pay attention. Snuggle, study their little hands and feet, and perhaps the crinkle in their nose. I often hold my baby and close my eyes and pretend to freeze time and try and lock holding him in my memory forever. Babies don’t keep!

WHAT SPECIAL PIECES OF JEWELRY ARE MEANINGFUL HEIRLOOMS FOR THE WOMEN IN YOUR FAMILY? Jade is considered to be the essence of the heaven and sky, representing longevity and health and conveying an auspicious meaning in the Chinese culture. It’s very meaningful to us. And my mother has two beautiful pieces she wears often that were her mother’s and that she will one day pass down—as will I to my daughters.

ANY OTHER SPECIAL PIECES YOU HOPE TO PASS DOWN TO YOUR CHILDREN? Aside from my engagement ring, I have two other very special rings. I have an emerald ring formed into a crown that I received when I won Mrs. Oklahoma, and a diamond eternity ring that I received when I won Mrs. America. All very special to me, not just because of their beauty but because I’m reminded of all the hard work and grit that those titles entailed, and I hope one day the pieces will be special to them.

S A L LY H U G H E S & H O L LY L E H M A N

Holly Lehman is an active member of Southern Hills Country Club and the Tulsa community at large, supporting organizations from First Presbyterian Church to Bishop Kelley High School, and is mother to three daughters. Her mother, Sally Hughes, has bettered Tulsa in a myriad of ways, from mentoring students at Alcott Elementary and Emerson School to serving as an elder at First Presbyterian Church to supporting organizations like Gilcrease Museum, Tulsa Opera, Tulsa Symphony Orchestra, Salvation Army and Tulsa Historical Society & Museum, where she and her husband are in the Hall of Fame.

18

HOLLY LEHMAN GREATEST LESSON YOUR MOTHER TAUGHT YOU? My mom is such wonderful role model to me and the rest of our family in so many ways. One of the biggest lessons that she demonstrates to all of us is putting family fi rst. My mom has taught us the value of spending time with and supporting one another. She’s always hosting a family event or holiday, going to a grandchild’s sporting event, texting, calling or coming by to check in. We don’t have a big family, but we are very close, and I give her full credit for that.

WHAT DO YOU HOPE YOUR CHILDREN LEARN FROM YOU?

SALLY HUGHES GREATEST LESSON YOUR MOTHER TAUGHT YOU? My mother, by example, taught me the sharing of boundless love and caring that can exist between a mother and a daughter. For example, at my mother’s memorial service, a friend said to me, “Your mother took good care of her mother. You took good care of your mother. And someone will take good care of you.” And so the story goes.

WHAT DO YOU HOPE YOUR CHILDREN LEARN FROM YOU? I hope that my children learn from me the joy and importance of family. I also hope that they learn that life is not without challenges. Our adjustment and acceptance are not about the challenge but how we handle the situation.

WHAT’S THE SECRET TO GOOD PARENTING? I think that successful parenting is, of course, unconditional love monitored with paying attention and trying to keep a good perspective.

BEST PART OF BEING A MOM? The best part of being a mom is all of the fun shared with my children and grandchildren and the joy of watching them grow and develop into such fi ne people.

I hope they enjoy every stage of their life and enjoy the moments. I hope they continue to give back and enjoy being a part of their community. And I hope they cherish friends, family and one another as sisters.

WHAT’S THE SECRET TO GOOD PARENTING? I wish I knew a secret! I know my mom was always there for me, and I felt that she was on my side supporting me every step of the way, and still does. I try to do the same for my girls.

BEST PART OF BEING A MOM? I love watching the girls spread their wings and fi nd their paths. All three of them are so different, and yet they share a special bond. It warms my heart.

ANY SPECIAL OR FAVORITE PIECES OF JEWELRY YOUR MOTHER OR GRANDMOTHER GIFTED YOU? My grandmother left me the stone from her wedding ring. I absolutely cherish it and love that it came from her.

ANY SPECIAL PIECES OF JEWELRY YOU HOPE TO PASS ON TO YOUR CHILDREN? With three girls, that gets tricky! I will defi nitely want them each to have something special that their dad has given me that I can pass on to them.

ANY SPECIAL PIECES OF JEWELRY YOU HOPE TO PASS ON TO YOUR CHILDREN? My mother left her wedding rings to me, and I shall leave mine to my daughter. 19

WATCH for the

WATCH

BY HALEY LONGMAN

WHAT’S ONE REASON CERTAIN TV SHOWS ARE UNFORGETTABLE? A TIMEPIECE WITH CHARACTER HELPS MAKE A CHARACTER.

There’s a timeless quality to certain distinctive television series, but their key characters always seem to know what time it is. That’s because they’re cool, they’re charismatic, they have that special swagger that glues you to the screen. And it’s also because they’re wearing watches. But a wristwatch tells more than the time. It speaks silent volumes about the wearer’s confidence, judgment and flair. It pushes our understanding beyond the script and hints at what makes someone tick.

HERE ARE THREE PROGRAMS, CURRENT AND CLASSIC, THAT ARE WELL WORTH WATCH-WATCHING:

LITTLE FIRES EVERYWHERE An upper middle-class family in Shaker Heights, Ohio, in which Joshua Jackson and Reese Witherspoon play Mr. and Mrs. Richardson, is the main subject of this ’90s-set Hulu series that examines race, motherhood and privilege. (Kerry Washington has a prominent role, too, as their new neighbor, Mia Warren.) Jackson plays Bill, a hotshot lawyer who appreciates the finer things in life—he wears gold rings on his pinky and ring fingers. But the father-of-four’s most notable piece of bling—his wife Elena has a “hers” version too—is his yellow-gold Rolex Daytona on a yellow-gold bracelet. It’s hard to determine if these timepieces chosen by costume designer Lyn Paolo (known for ’90s dramas The West Wing and ER) are authentically from the era, but they may well be, as Jackson’s appears to have a El Primero-based caliber 4030 movement inside; Rolex changed to its in-house caliber 4130 in 2000. Gold had a major style moment in 1997, and Rolex was (and still is) one of the most soughtafter brands, so such jewelry choices feel very on-point for these well-off, fashion-conscious characters.

MAD MEN Jon Hamm had quite a few iconic style moments over his seven seasons of playing Don Draper, a top ad-agency exec in the 1960s and ’70s. But as dapper as his three-piece suits, skinny ties and slicked-back-hair were, nothing was as suave as his 36mm Rolex Oyster Perpetual Explorer. The watch was introduced circa 1953 with a Calibre 3132 movement and a smooth bezel, and it was (and still is) Swiss chronographer-certified. That piece became a special Draper trademark, but over the years the character also wore a Rolex Explorer I, an Omega DeVille Prestige and a Jaeger LeCoultre Master Memovox. Each wristwatch is as classic and powerful as Draper—and soberer.

THE SOPRANOS Tony Soprano and the Rolex Day-Date go hand-in-hand in this award-winning drama. The New Jersey mob boss played by the late James Gandolfini wears this watch early on in the opening credits and throughout the show, and it’s a powerful choice. Soprano has the 36mm model in 18K yellow gold with a champagne dial and water resistance up to 300 meters. Also notable is the gold “President” bracelet, a symbol of status and wealth by itself. But Soprano doesn’t brand-discriminate—in a famous scene that first aired in 2002, he buys a blinged-out Patek Philippe Ref. 5037/1G as a gift for his cousin-in-crime, which some say was an expression of Gandolfini’s real-life affection for luxury timepieces. 39

MEET MICHELLE

Michelle Holdgrafer remains an artist at heart. She earned her bachelor’s degree in fine arts from University of Kansas before becoming a graduate gemologist at Gemological Institute of America. Then, she spent years handcrafting fine jewelry before evolving into store director at Bruce G. Weber Diamond Cellar. Now, Holdgrafer relishes helping people find and design jewelry that will stand the test of time and be handed down for generations. Here, meet the Tulsa wife and mother of two.

THREE THINGS I’M PASSIONATE ABOUT

MOST MEMORABLE PIECE OF JEWELRY I’VE MADE

Family, fashion and sports.

I enjoy food, and nothing is better than fresh seafood. It doesn’t even need to be a fancy restaurant. A fun and cool setting is key!

Early on, when I was first making jewelry, I made a wide turquoise ring. The turquoise was a cool, long, rectangular shape. It had no matrix. Truly a beautiful stone. It was bezelset in silver, and it was probably the best of my bezel settings.

DRINK OF CHOICE

WHY I LOVE WHAT I DO

ULTIMATE DATE NIGHT

Margaritas, mojitos and cold beer—anything that makes me feel like I’m in the tropics.

FAVORITE CITY Edgartown, Massachusetts. It—along with the Vineyard and Nantucket—stole my heart. The food and the atmosphere of old town America is just lovely.

It is so rewarding helping my customers and friends with surprise gifts or engagement rings. I really enjoy being part of that process and the special moments in their lives.
