WELCOME For many, I know that 2020 can’t come to a close fast enough. Undoubtedly, it’s been rough. But if there is a silver lining, it’s that many people have realized that in the end, what matters most are the people we love. One of my friends walked into Diamond Cellar and started talking about all of the memories she and her husband have made in the store together— choosing jewelry to celebrate birthdays, anniversaries, children. She laughed. She cried. And she hugged me. “Thank you,” she said. Each of her pieces signifies something special. But above all, each represents life and joy and love. And they’re not just for her; they’re for her children. Her grandchildren. Their grandchildren. Inside this issue of ACCENT magazine, we feature four women who talk about this same emotional connection to jewelry. They share how it links them to the people they love—the generations before them and the generations after them. It’s why I relish this work. Love, whether it’s the romantic kind or the parenting kind or the friendship kind, is truly something to behold. If we can help people capture it in the form of art that can have meaning for generations to come, well, I’m darn proud to be part of it. Especially this year. If there is any time to celebrate the people we love—and to tell them and show them just how much—it’s now. Here’s to love. Cheers,

R. Andrew Johnson

In 1926, Rolex Founder Hans Wilsdorf created the first waterproof wristwatch. Nearly 100 years later, the visionary entrepreneur’s Swiss company continues making the world’s most collectible timepieces.

Elizabeth Taylor, Jackie Kennedy and Grace Kelly all famously wore this elegant, iconic French brand for a reason. It’s classic, timeless and still as inspiring as ever.

Founded in Milan by Pino Rabolini— whose family members were goldsmiths—this brand is known for its creative, colorful designs and impeccable craftsmanship.

BEHIND THE SCENES Models Amy and Alex White are married, live in Columbus, and own Peak Human Performance athletic training studio. They are the parents of two young daughters, Zella and Zara, and relish the chance to model together.

8

“After just having a baby and being in quarantine with my infant and toddler for a few months, it felt so incredible to get glammed up and be fabulous for a few hours,” said cover model Amy, 36. “I loved getting to work with this talented team of creatives to make these amazing pieces come to life.”

843

That’s how many photos Diamond Cellar photographer Ally Gille took at this day-long shoot. Our team narrowed those down to 4 cover photo options. We then went through about 12 versions of the cover before landing on the one you see.

9

Look changes during the shoot, styled by The Yusufs, with hair by Denise Chesser and makeup by Yodit of Almaz Faces.

AMY’S FAVORITE PIECE OF JEWELRY FROM THE SHOOT? THIS SPINEL RING.

“It’s so much fun to work creatively with my love!” Amy said. “We work together most days, but this was next-level special getting glammed up and rocking all the amazing pieces. We actually considered this shoot a date as those are pretty hard to come by these days.”

TYLER & MAGGIE HAGERMAN Married June 13, 2020

THE ASK Tyler surprised Maggie with a weekend getaway to Landoll’s Mohican Castle right before Christmas. The two had a romantic dinner and then went on a stroll to see the Christmas lights before heading back to their room. Maggie walked through the door to see flowers, balloons and champagne with Tyler on one knee asking her to marry him.

THE RING Maggie is a one of a kind woman, and I wanted to get her a one of a kind custom ring as special and beautiful as she is. —Tyler

DAVID TRIPP & LAUREN SHERIDAN Engaged April 18, 2019

THE MOMENT WE KNEW IT WAS FOREVER It only took three dates. It was like I had known him forever. —Lauren I got sick early on in our relationship, and she dropped off medicine to my house. Nobody had ever gone out of their way to care for me who wasn’t close family. —David

THE RING Lauren had always wanted a beautiful solitare. To help relieve some of the stress (but keep some surprise), she picked the setting and David picked the diamond on a different day.

SHE CAN’T WAIT TO BE WEARING IT WHEN… We travel the world together.

THEODORE MONNIN & TABITHA SMITH Engaged December 5, 2019

THE MOMENT WE KNEW IT WAS FOREVER The night Theodore brought me home to meet his parents. He bought me a new dress for it to calm my nerves, and I spent almost two hours walking the yard talking with his mom, Debbie. He would smile through the window watching us. I knew I was going to marry that man. —Tabitha We had been dating for a month or so, and Tabitha came to the bison farm and was willing to help and talk about the farm business. It showed me that she wanted to be a part of my life and that we could work together to build a happy successful life. —Theodore

THE ASK Theodore planned a surprise trip to Hilton Head after talking with Tabitha’s father, Kevin. The second day they were there, he had a manicure, pedicure and massage scheduled. Two days later, he took Tabitha on a helicopter ride followed by a walk on the beach where he popped the question with a photographer waiting to capture the moment!

JIM & ANN CARDOSI Married August 9, 2020

THE ASK Jim made reservations for dinner at one of our favorite restaurants, Hudson 29, where we had our very first date. At dinner, Jim began reading song lyrics he had written. I lowered my head to focus on the words. I realized they were very personal to me—including my kids’ and dogs’ names. I felt the power of the words growing strong as he read the lyrics. He ended the song by asking me to be his wife. When I looked up, there was a box on the table with my engagement ring in it—a ring which I had come to believe wouldn’t be ready for many weeks and containing a center stone I was led to believe had been bought by someone else. I was absolutely stunned. We laughed over all the sly, sneaky moves he and our sales associate, Don Lewis, had planned together to make the proposal a huge surprise! —Ann

THE RING Ann knew she wanted an oval stone in a cathedral setting with side stones. Don and I worked together in quite a covert undertaking to design a gorgeous, one-of-a-kind ring of nearly three carats. —Jim

ON NEVER TAKING OFF THE RING... I absolutely LOVE the stunning beauty and uniqueness of my engagement rings and custom wedding jacket. I am incredibly proud to wear them every single day, everywhere I go. I get many, many compliments on the set. —Ann

GREATEST LESSON YOUR MOTHER TAUGHT YOU? My mom has taught me how to adapt and make the best of what I have. Being resilient has helped me so much in my life.

WHAT DO YOU HOPE YOUR CHILDREN LEARN FROM YOU? I hope my kids learn to always be curious, kind and grateful. It takes the same amount of energy to be miserable and to complain as it does to grow and better yourself.

WHAT’S THE SECRET TO GOOD PARENTING? The secret to being a good parent is providing unconditional love. Speak to your children as if they are the wisest, kindest, most beautiful and magical little humans on earth. For what they hear and believe is who they will become.

BEST PART OF BEING A MOM? The best part of being a mom is getting to watch them fi nd their voice and confidence. I love to celebrate all the small things.

DO YOU HAVE ANY SPECIAL PIECES OF JEWELRY YOUR MOTHER OR GRANDMOTHER GIFTED YOU? My grandma passed her wedding jewelry onto my mom, who then shared it with me on my wedding day. It’s the jewelry I wore for my wedding ceremony, and it felt as though my grandma was with me even though she was thousands of miles away in India. I hope to continue the tradition and pass the wedding jewelry on to my daughter, Callie.

GREATEST LESSON YOUR MOTHER TAUGHT YOU? Resilience. My parents got divorced when I was 11, and my mom went back to college to get her nursing degree while co-raising three kids. She worked really hard to be a mom, a student, and then a nurse, and she never gave up on the pursuit of her goals.

WHAT DO YOU HOPE YOUR CHILDREN LEARN FROM YOU? I hope my children know they are loved unconditionally, but that we (my husband Greg Guy and I) also have high expectations on what they can achieve, and what is expected of them—hard work, empathy, kindness and a little fun.

WHAT’S THE SECRET TO GOOD PARENTING? I think consistency is key with your kids and between you and your partner. A good saying is, “It does not matter who is right, as long as you are both on the same page.” Greg and I try very hard to always make sure we are both on the same page when it comes to the love, consistency, values, rules, etc,. that we have with our children.

Lisa and her husband, Greg Guy, with their four children.

BEST PART OF BEING A MOM? Getting handmade cards from the kids that tell me they still love me. I will miss the day when they stop making those.

DO YOU HAVE ANY SPECIAL PIECES OF JEWELRY YOUR MOTHER OR GRANDMOTHER GIFTED YOU? My grandmother gave me a couple of pieces—a pearl necklace that I wore on my wedding day and her diamond ring. I will always look at those pieces and think of her very fondly. And hopefully there will be some pieces that my kids associate with me that they will want. I have one daughter and three boys, so my daughter may make out pretty well with my jewelry! 23

KAREN MORRISON

Karen Morrison is president of OhioHealth Foundation and senior vice president at OhioHealth. She is also mother to grown daughters Sarah and Blaire.

24

GREATEST LESSON YOUR MOTHER TAUGHT YOU? As a faithful person and a devoted Catholic, my mother always taught me to treat others the way that I would want to be treated. We were very fortunate to be raised in a home with both parents and with resources and opportunities. My mother would often remind us that others may not be as fortunate as we were, and that we should express gratitude and meet people where they are. She would encourage us to be humble, kind and charitable. These are values that I strive to live by each and every day.

WHAT DO YOU HOPE YOUR CHILDREN LEARN FROM YOU? I hope my children will appreciate the value of being resilient. It’s something that I have learned along the way, and it has been very helpful. As a mother of two daughters, I believe it is important to instill confidence, persistence and resiliency in both of them. Most of us know that life isn’t always linear; there could be ups, downs and bumps in the road. I’ve had my share of detours, and I have learned from them. I want my daughters to learn from failures and detours, and to not let it destroy their hopes and dreams. In the end, I believe all of these experiences make us better people.

DO YOU HAVE ANY SPECIAL PIECES OF JEWELRY YOUR MOTHER OR GRANDMOTHER GIFTED YOU? My mother and grandmother partnered with Diamond Cellar to design a ring for me for my 13th birthday (47 years ago!). It is simple but very meaningful, as it included diamonds from their original engagement rings. I enjoyed wearing it for many years. I was delighted to gift the ring to my oldest daughter on her 13th birthday, hoping that it brings her as much joy. She never takes it off !

ARE THERE ANY OTHER SPECIAL PIECES YOU HOPE TO PASS ON TO YOUR KIDS? Unfortunately, I lost my mother last year. While it is difficult to not physically see her every day, I am comforted by her presence in spirit and by the values that she instilled in me. While she had a number of beautiful pieces, there are two rings that she cherished that we both would want my daughters to enjoy. One is her wedding ring, and the other is a beautiful estate ring that she enjoyed wearing. My hope is that my daughters would be reminded of her love for them and ultimately cherish them as much as she did.

BEST PART OF BEING A MOM? I love seeing delight and joy in both of my daughters. It could be a graduation, vacation or just quiet time together. I love seeing them be fulfi lled, with a strong sense of well-being. It is a blessing and satisfying to know that they are both good people who are fi lled with compassion and kindness for others. 25

MAREN ROTH

Maren Roth is the owner of Short North boutique Rowe and mother to daughter Lennon, 4. She is also expecting a son.

26

GREATEST LESSON YOUR MOTHER TAUGHT YOU? Oh, there are so many. But when I think of the most relevant to this stage in my child’s life, it’s patience. This is two-fold. First, allowing my child to make mistakes and learn from them has taken immense patience, especially when I want to jump in and help. Second, my toddler often has her own agenda, and it has taken great patience to grow through that with her. My mom had more patience than anyone I have ever known.

WHAT DO YOU HOPE YOUR DAUGHTER LEARNS FROM YOU? Strength and unconditional love.

TOUGHEST PART OF BEING A MOM? Those moments when you admit that you need a break, and accepting myself and my shortcomings when I get upset or frustrated. I see so much of myself reflected back at me as a parent, and sometimes that reflection can be hard to look at.

BEST PART OF BEING A MOM? The pure joy and unconditional love my daughter has when she is with me. There is nothing better than a hug, a smooch and an ugga mugga from my girl.

DO YOU HAVE ANY SPECIAL PIECES OF JEWELRY YOUR MOTHER OR GRANDMOTHER GIFTED YOU? I have my mother’s engagement ring. We made some tweaks to the original design, but the center stone is the original stone, and it is a beautiful reminder of my mother (and my father) every time I look at it. I worked with the Diamond Cellar to re-design the ring after my husband gave me my mom’s original ring. From some of the diamonds in the original ring, they helped me design an identical necklace for my mom, my daughter and myself and a pair of tiny diamond studs for my daughter. I wear my necklace every day, and I let my daughter wear hers on very special occasions. It was a connection of her past, our present and my future, and I feel so close to them when I wear it. I also plan on passing my ring down to her, along with a pair of diamond hoops from her grandmother.

CRAFTSMANSHIP’S NEW HOME The recently finished Patek Philippe production facility was put together like a Swiss watch. BY CHRISTEN FISHER

In April 2020, Patek Philippe officially completed construction on a new, state-of-the-art manufacture. This flagship production facility on the outskirts of Geneva unites all of the company’s Genevan ateliers under one roof and provides abundant space for rare handcrafts professionals, as well as employee training facilities and a restaurant. While Patek does not anticipate that the new premises will “noticeably increase the volume of watches produced from the current 62,000 pieces per year,” it does expect them to accommodate production operations for the next two to three decades by streamlining manufacturing and assembly. The Geneva architectural firm Frisk de Marignac Pidoux created the highly contemporary building design, while Frei & Stefani SA in Thônex was responsible for its interior architecture. A work of art in itself, the $633 million structure brings to mind a luxury ocean liner and yet complements the surrounding landscape of the municipality of Plan-les-Ouates. Occupying almost 1.5 million square feet over 10 floors, six above ground and four below, the building contains more than 14,000 tons of rebar steel—enough for two Eiffel Towers—and almost 300,000 cubic feet of concrete. Its basement volume is about the same as 90 Olympic-sized pools, while that of the entire building is the equivalent of approximately seven Airbus A380 planes. The building’s 10 floors are divided into five segments and reached by 20 freight and passenger elevators and four staircases. The ground and first floors are dedicated to watch production, as well as the finishing of moving parts, including plates, wheels and bridges. The second floor is reserved for machining, manual polishing, the assembly of exterior parts, such as bracelets and cases and gem-setting. The second-floor ateliers also craft spare parts required by customer service. Antique timepieces are restored here as well. The third floor is allocated to research and development endeavors, while the fourth floor is dedicated to Patek’s famous rare handcrafts, including manual engraving, enameling, guilloching and wood micro-marquetry. The

fifth floor contains a penthouse restaurant with seating for 880 as well as four VIP lounges, all with panoramic views of the spectacular Swiss landscape. It’s a Patek Philippe tradition to mark key events in the corporate history by launching limited-edition commemorative watches. So in tribute to the commissioning of the new production building, Patek released a limitededition Calatrava. The new Reference 6007A-001 features a 324 SC caliber self-winding mechanical movement in a 40mm polished stainless-steel case, a rarity in the Patek collection. The display back boasts an imprint of the Calatrava cross and “New Manufacture 2019” inscription to commemorate the year the first work groups moved into the new building. The gray-blue dial has a white-printed five-minute scale at the periphery, a white-printed railway scale with triangular markers around the center and applied Arabic numerals in white lacquered 18K gold. Pierced baton-style hour and minute hands in white lacquered 18K gold, a white lacquered bronze sweep second hand and a date aperture at 3 o’clock complete the piece. This symbol of Patek Philippe’s new chapter is presented on a matte gray-blue calfskin strap embossed with a delicate textile motif. As only 1,000 pieces were made, you might instead consider a classic Calatrava, which with its pure lines and traditional sensibilities embodies the same spirit as the commemorative edition. The Calatrava is the very essence of the round wristwatch and one of the finest symbols of the Patek Philippe style. First introduced in 1932, the Calatrava is available as a manual-wind, time-only watch or a mechanical self-winding watch in platinum, rose gold or yellow gold with various dial and embellishment options. Calatravas are sized from 37mm to 39mm for men and 34.6mm for ladies, and each has a sapphire crystal caseback and is water-resistant to 30 meters. Supremely elegant, the Calatrava charms each new generation of watch lovers with its timeless, understated perfection. And if the new Patek production facility lives up to its promise, it will be good news for watch connoisseurs yet unborn.

WHAT’S ONE REASON CERTAIN TV SHOWS ARE UNFORGETTABLE? A TIMEPIECE WITH CHARACTER HELPS MAKE A CHARACTER. BY HALEY LONGMAN

There’s a timeless quality to certain distinctive television series, but their key characters always seem to know what time it is. That’s because they’re cool, they’re charismatic, they have that special swagger that glues you to the screen. And it’s also because they’re wearing watches. But a wristwatch tells more than the time. It speaks silent volumes about the wearer’s confidence, judgment and flair. It pushes our understanding beyond the script and hints at what makes someone tick.

HERE ARE FIVE PROGRAMS, CURRENT AND CLASSIC, THAT ARE WELL WORTH WATCH-WATCHING:

LITTLE FIRES EVERYWHERE An upper middle-class family in Shaker Heights, Ohio, in which Joshua Jackson and Reese Witherspoon play Mr. and Mrs. Richardson, is the main subject of this ’90s-set Hulu series that examines race, motherhood and privilege. (Kerry Washington has a prominent role too, as their new neighbor, Mia Warren.) Jackson plays Bill, a hotshot lawyer who appreciates the finer things in life—he wears gold rings on his pinky and ring fingers. But the father-of-four’s most notable piece of bling—his wife Elena has a “hers” version too—is his yellow-gold Rolex Daytona on a yellow-gold bracelet. It’s hard to determine if these timepieces chosen by costume designer Lyn Paolo (known for ’90s dramas The West Wing and ER) are authentically from the era, but they may well be, as Jackson’s appears to have a El Primerobased caliber 4030 movement inside; Rolex changed to its in-house caliber 4130 in 2000 (the two timepieces pictured here, above, are the current iterations of the vintage pieces portrayed on the show). Gold had a major style moment in 1997, and Rolex was (and still is) one of the most sought-after brands, so such jewelry choices feel very on-point for these well-off, fashion-conscious characters.

THE SOPRANOS Tony Soprano and the Rolex Day-Date go hand-in-hand in this award-winning drama. The New Jersey mob boss played by the late James Gandolfini wears this watch early on in the opening credits and throughout the show, and it’s a powerful choice. Soprano has the 36mm model in 18K yellow gold with a champagne dial and water resistance up to 300 meters. Also notable is the gold “President” bracelet, a symbol of status and wealth by itself. But Soprano doesn’t brand-discriminate—in a famous scene that first aired in 2002, he buys a blinged-out Patek Philippe Ref. 5037/1G as a gift for his cousin-in-crime, which some say was an expression of Gandolfini’s real-life affection for luxury timepieces.

THE OFFICE As a top sales-rep-turned-manager at the Scranton, Pennsylvania, office of paper company Dunder Mifflin, John Krasinski’s Jim Halpert is essentially a regular Joe who wants more out of his career (and could stand a boss who’s a bit more rational and productive). But his choice of timepiece to complement his 9-to-5 garb of button-ups and loafers is hardly ordinary: It’s a Victorinox Swiss Army Infantry watch. This beaut has a water resistance of 100 meters, a Swiss quartz movement, a stainless-steel case and a black canvas strap. It was definitely this watch (along with his winning prankster personality) that ultimately got Jim the girl, don’t you think?

BREAKING BAD Bryan Cranston wore two watches during his tenure as Walter White on this Emmy-winning series: He first rocked a digital Casio CA-53W during his days as a high school chemistry teacher. But in Season 5, White got a major upgrade when his literal partner in crime Jesse Pinkman (played by Aaron Paul) gave him the more luxurious TAG Heuer Monaco Chronograph for his 51st birthday. This 39mm piece has a Calibre 12 automatic movement, a standout blue dial and a date window at 6 o’clock instead of the usual 3 o’clock; it’s close stylistically to the original 1969 version that was worn by actor Steve McQueen. A sapphire crystal and water resistance up to 330 feet round out this stunner’s top features. The watch ended up playing an unexpected role in the show up until its series finale aired in 2013. No spoilers, though, if you haven’t yet seen it!

MAD MEN Jon Hamm had quite a few iconic style moments over his seven seasons of playing Don Draper, a top ad-agency exec in the 1960s and ’70s. But as dapper as his three-piece suits, skinny ties and slicked-back-hair were, nothing was as suave as his 36mm Rolex Oyster Perpetual Explorer. The watch was introduced circa 1953 with a Calibre 3132 movement and a smooth bezel, and it was (and still is) Swiss chronographer-certified. That piece became a special Draper trademark, but over the years the character also wore a Rolex Explorer I, an Omega De Ville Prestige and a Jaeger LeCoultre Master Memovox. Each wristwatch is as classic and powerful as Draper— and soberer.

THREE THINGS I’M PASSIONATE ABOUT

MOST MEMORABLE PIECE OF JEWELRY I’VE MADE

Travel, food and hanging out with family and friends.

I have designed a few unforgettable pieces: A sideways marquise-cut diamond ring, a basketball pinky ring, an heirloom necklace and a cuff bracelet that we collaborated on with CCAD president Melanie Corn, to name a few. All are memorable either by the uniqueness of the piece or the individual I worked with to design them.

ULTIMATE DATE NIGHT Happy hour at Lindey’s, followed by biking to get appetizers all over the city and fi nished with a great concert. On a zero-percent humidity, 70-degree day.

DRINK OF CHOICE Bourbon Old Fashioned

I SPECIALIZE IN Bringing old jewelry back to life and creating wearable pieces of art to commemorate special times in people’s lives. The bracelet Dan collaborated on with Melanie Corn.

WHY I LOVE WHAT I DO I get to work with the best people and materials in the medium, and I love to see the fi nished product of such an interesting combination. Every day is different, and there is constantly something new to learn and create.
