Welcome It’s the season of giving. A season to give gifts—to find treasures or cook meals or create adventures that will delight the ones we love. A season to give our presence—to slow down, be in the moment and relish the people we hold dear. A season to give our gratitude—to acknowledge our blessings and to pay those blessings forward. In this issue, we celebrate giving in many ways. We highlight a few noteworthy community members who are changing lives by giving their time, talents and treasures to meaningful causes. We feature a boutique catering company that not only provides exquisite food, but also feeds our hungry neighbors. We introduce you to our new jewelry line fewr, which gives back by minimizing its environmental impact and donating a portion of each purchase to charity. And we do, of course, share a bevy of absolutely beautiful items we’ve curated that you could gift to yourself or those you love. Plus, there’s more. I hope you’ll enjoy diving in as much as we enjoyed putting this issue together. And I hope you cherish and enjoy this most wonderful time of the year. May we all live to give. Sincerely,

R. Andrew Johnson Chief Executive Officer

Style File: Fall’s Top 5 Allison Jayjack, owner of Short North boutique Ladybird, shares her five favorite fall trends.

EXAGGERATED CLASSICS We’re seeing classics made modern with dramatic twists. One example we love? A trench coat with balloon sleeves.

RETURN OF THE TROUSER Gathered waists put a feminine touch on what is typically a masculine look. The higher the rise, the better.

SHADES OF GREEN Rich greens like deep jade are making their way into a variety of pieces, from plaids to animal prints to tie-dye patterns. I especially love this as an accent color. I scooped up some bucket hats in dark hunter green to pair back to color in patterns, and they’re fabulous!

HELLO, ‘70s Channel the good vibes with pieces like pleated A-line skirts, culottes and wide wale blazers.

BAROQUE PEARLS Whether you’re wearing them in your hair or dangling them from your ears, it’s a fresh twist on the tried and true classic that’s absolutely on point.

Wedding Bliss

From colors to venues, event planner Ashley Stephan has her finger on the pulse of the wedding scene. Here, she talks about what’s trending now.

THE LOOK

THE DÉCOR

THE FOOD + DRINK

Many brides are choosing simple silk dresses, gowns with flower embellishments or dresses with plunging necklines. They are also opting for blush and ivory tones along with the standard wedding white. Bridesmaids dresses have never been better, with light fabric and mix-and-match styles and colors. And many grooms are skipping traditional tuxedos in favor of dapper custom suits—often in navy or gray— from places like local favorite Pursuit.

Bold statement centerpieces such as trees are definitely popular, as is the trend of bringing nature inside. Clients are also requesting to hang ceiling fixtures, chandeliers and floral arrangements above the dance floor. People are also liking (super Instagram worthy) neon signs and balloons.

THE VENUE

Couples are getting super creative with details, from crafting personalized place settings to sharing table assignments with flair—like on the Champagne flutes shown here.

Fun and creative cocktails have been trending for the past few years and are always a crowd favorite. For food, many couples are shying away from the standard chicken plate and opting for family-style dinners or stations with local flare. From sushi to pizza to Indian stations, couples want their guests to enjoy a more interactive experience and to try foods that relate to the couple. Latenight bites, from food trucks to comfort foods, are also a huge hit. For dessert, cakes are making a comeback. And a lot of couples serve a variety of sweets along with the cake, including donuts, ice cream and cinnamon rolls.

Unique venues are on every couple’s wish list. They want something different. And Columbus has many new and unique spots, including rooftops and places with skyline views like Juniper and The Fives.

Alex ShumAte Distinguished lawyer, community thought leader and philanthropist Alex Shumate is the managing partner of the Columbus office of the international law firm Squire Patton Boggs. His career includes having served as chief counsel and deputy chief of staff to the Ohio governor, two terms as chairman of The Ohio State University’s Board of Trustees and secretary of The Columbus Partnership, among other notable positions. He has been honored with a myriad of awards for his professional and philanthropic achievements from organizations including Columbus Bar Association, United Negro College Fund, United Way, NAACP and more. In 2003, he was named Humanitarian of the Year by American Red Cross; and in 2007, he received The Columbus Award— the most prestigious award given by the Columbus Chamber of Commerce, for outstanding business and community leadership. More recently, he was selected the Best Lawyers’ 2018 Government Relations “Lawyer of the Year” for Columbus, Ohio. Favorite organization

Most meaningful gift I’ve ever given

The engagement ring I gave my wife. Scott Kay was at Diamond Cellar. We met him there, purchased one of his specially designed rings and took a photo with him, which we still have today.

Why I support the mission

I believe that education is the key to one’s success. Not only is Ohio State a leading higher-educational, flagship institution, it is also critically important to the success of our region’s economic development.

Most meaningful gift I’ve ever received

My wedding ring, which we also purchased from Diamond Cellar, and a David Yurman silver woven box chain bracelet in red—for Ohio State—which my wife Renee also purchased from Diamond Cellar.

Other causes and organizations I love

The Columbus Partnership, The Columbus Urban League, Wexner Center for the Arts and United Way of Central Ohio.

Kelley Griesmer Community visionary Kelley Griesmer has long been lauded for her passion—first as a lawyer, next as COO at Pelotonia, then as senior vice president at The Columbus Foundation. Now, she is President and CEO of The Women’s Fund of Central Ohio, leading efforts to ignite social change for the sake of gender equality. Griesmer had been a lawyer at Jones Day for 13 years when she decided to take her desire to uplift others and enter the nonprofit sector. She became the first chief operating officer at Pelotonia, helping the organization raise more than $100 million in seven years. She then joined The Columbus Foundation, where she led efforts like The Big Table, Kind Columbus and other programs as senior vice president. Now, she’s advocating for women through research, partnerships, community education and more. Favorite organization

Other causes and organizations I love

The Women’s Fund of Central Ohio.

There are so many wonderful organizations in Central Ohio that it’s almost impossible to narrow it down. But of course Pelotonia and The Columbus Foundation hold very special places in my heart. And I greatly admire and support the work of Besa, The Harmony Project, CHOICES for Victims of Domestic Violence and The Center for Healthy Families as well.

Why I support the mission

I strongly believe that transforming the lives of women and girls through strategic investments is critical to improving our world. Historically, our global societies have devalued, marginalized and underutilized women and girls. So investing in social change that supports and empowers those people who make up more than half of our population will lead to better outcomes for all of us. It’s not about women versus others; it’s about mobilizing the collective power and passion of all people working together so that we can share in a brighter tomorrow.

Most meaningful gift I’ve ever given Giving my mom a grandchild was the most meaningful gift I have ever given—even though I had no idea how much it would mean to her until after I did it.

Most meaningful gift I’ve ever received

A beautiful poem that my son wrote about me for a school project.

“It’s about mobilizing the collective power and passion of all people so that we can share in a brighter tomorrow.”

Cameron Mitchell Cameron Mitchell started as a steakhouse dishwasher and evolved into one of the nation’s foremost restaurateurs. Cameron Mitchell Restaurants, which Mitchell founded more than 25 years ago, now boasts 36 restaurants, including 16 concepts in 12 states—and that’s after selling 22 restaurants to Ruth’s Hospitality Group for $92 million. Mitchell also runs CMR’s sister company, Rusty Bucket Restaurant, which includes 23 locations in six states, and recently released his book, “Yes is the Answer! What is the Question?” He is committed to giving back, which he does in a myriad of ways, from serving on boards to donating money. Favorite causes

A huge focus of mine is helping to foster the next generation of restaurateurs, and I am excited to have partnered with Columbus State to help make the new Hospitality Management and Culinary Arts building a reality. With doors now open to students and the community, it’s nice to see the project come to fruition after five years of planning. It will elevate Columbus State’s already outstanding programs to a level consistent with Columbus’ growing reputation as a culinary and hospitality center. I also am a big supporter of The Ohio State University, the James Cancer Hospital and Solove Research Institute, Nationwide Children’s Hospital and KIPP Columbus.

Why I support the mission

Our work at Columbus State allows me to give back to this wonderful hospitality industry that has been so good to me and my family throughout the years. I welcome the opportunity to help raise up Columbus, the city I love and will always call home, as a thriving culinary hub. It is an incredible honor to

give back to the community that has embraced our company for more than 25 years and provided the foundation for thousands of our associates to build meaningful and rewarding hospitality careers.

Most meaningful gift I’ve ever given

Earlier this year, I gave my wife a new diamond ring to celebrate her 50th birthday. I wanted to give her something unforgettable that recognizes the incredible woman she is, the impact she has made on me and all she has done for our children over the past 25 years.

Most meaningful gift I’ve ever received

My wife had just given birth to our daughter and was still recovering when she purchased a new Rolex watch for me for my 40th birthday. I always look at the watch and think of that special time in our lives. I have worn it every day since.

FOOD

Serving Up Joy

Boutique catering company and event space Bleu & Fig has been delighting intimate groups with its delectable eats for nearly 10 years. As it prepares to celebrate a decade in business, we talked with Owner and Chef Brooke Kinsey—who graduated from the prestigious culinary program at Johnson & Wales—about her passion, her mission, her dream menu and more. How was your passion for cooking born?

What is the best part of your work?

My passion started with a grandmother who loved to cook and a mom who didn’t {laughing}. My grandmother cooked country comfort food and was fast-moving and clever in the kitchen. She taught me core kitchen basics. And because my mom didn’t like to cook, she gave me total freedom to do whatever I wanted in the kitchen from a young age.

Hands down, watching people come together over food is the best part. You have moved to a zero-waste program that gives back. How does it work? Sometimes we donate extra food to the local food pantry ourselves, and other times we work with an organization that actually comes and picks up any leftovers we have to distribute them to people in need.

How do you see food? I’ve always seen food as art—something to be experienced. I’m obsessed with food being both visually beautiful and delicious. And I’m passionate about introducing people to new foods.

You’re launching a new concept this fall. What is it?

We are opening The Bleu Boutique, a food gift shop, at our Clintonville event venue. The boutique will allow us to What details make your food so popular? accommodate requests for smaller orders. Photo courtesy Bryce Laughlin So now you won’t have to wait until you’re Let’s face it—anyone can make a ton of having a big party to use Bleu & Fig. We will take pre-orders pasta, throw it in a pan and call it catering. That was never what that will be available for pickup Thursday through Saturday. we were about. One of the reasons we started the company was Some items offered will be our cheeseboards, candied bacon, because we didn’t want to be apologetic for taking the extra honey-glazed beer bread, orzo, chicken salad...basically all of time to remember the details. It can be something as basic as our signature items in smaller quantities. roasting garlic to bring out a beautiful sweetness. Or growing some of our own produce and herbs and picking them hours— sometimes moments—before serving them. If you’re hosting a party for friends, what’s on the menu? What are your most popular dishes? Honey-glazed beer bread, brown sugar candied bacon and Parmesan fennel shortbread.

Tacos. What is the greatest compliment you’ve received?

At one of our pop-up brunches earlier this year, a guest came up to me and asked me to look around the room. She told me What are some memorable events you’ve helped create? that she had observed throughout the brunch that people didn’t I’m so grateful that we have catered so many beautiful have their cell phones out. Zen Vibes

In a world of chaos, people are gravitating toward spaces that offer a spa-like sanctuary. And not just in their yoga studios and salons—in homes, hotels and a myriad of other places too. Columbus company Hamilton Parker, which outfits both residential and commercial spaces nationwide with luxury building materials from tiles to fireplaces, says sanctuary spaces are a top décor trend. “People want a relaxing, Zen-like vibe,” says Hamilton Parker Merchandising Manager Randi Garris. “It doesn’t just look good—it feels good to be in too.” Here’s how Garris suggests bringing the trend to life.

1 2

Choose natural colors. Use a color palette found in nature, like warm neutrals. And instead of accenting with a pop of color in building materials, accent with plants, using green as your pop of color.

Use earthy textures. Nature is full of texture, so bring it into your space to channel a connection to the Earth—the smoothness of honed marble, the grit of wood grain, the water-like translucence of glass. Today’s tiles offer unique and easy ways to incorporate a variety of textures.

3

Keep it minimal. When done right, this trend will evoke feelings of calm and serenity. Minimalize by creating clean lines and surfaces, and by including stow-away storage solutions.

DCS-190036 - F - Decor Feature.indd 1

4 5

Go luxe beyond looks. Think dimensionally about this trend by moving beyond the aesthetic of the space and thinking about other senses, too. Heated floors, anyone? Accent thoughtfully. Details are everything. Choose beautiful light fixtures with dimmers to set a mood. Select lush linens for bathrooms and kitchens or comfy blankets for other spaces. And finish the space with a soothing, Earth-inspired scented candle.

T H E L I N E T H AT K NOWS L E S S I S M O R E It’s jewelry with a conscience, and it’s launching this fall. Our new line fewr—which stands for fire, earth, wind and rain—was created by STORE 5a Founder and Director Jesse Johnson. Its inaugural collection includes about 20 organic, minimalistic pieces—necklaces, earrings, rings and bracelets—all made from recycled precious metals and diamonds. Each piece is hand-crafted by our goldsmiths, and 5% of every sale goes toward bettering the planet. The jewelry, which starts at $60, is available at STORE 5a, Diamond Cellar and www.shopfewr.com. We talked with Johnson about his inspiration behind the project. What inspired this line?

Who do you envision wearing it?

I’ve always loved to create new things, but I am becoming increasingly aware of how our need for new and more takes its toll on our environment. Being in the preowned business, I began to wonder what would happen if we created a line of new jewelry items crafted out of 100% recycled materials. Eventually, fewr was born.

Everyone can wear this. This jewelry is great for all generations, men and women, perfect for collecting, stacking and gifting.

These are products with a purpose. What is that purpose? Not only are the pieces made out of 100 percent recycled materials, but 5 percent of every sale helps either conserve our ecosystem or source clean and sustainable water and energy.

If you could choose a celebrity to wear the line, who would it be? I would choose Gwyneth Paltrow. She seems to be very conscious about what she supports and has great taste.

What do you hope fewr becomes? I want to create an alternative for people’s daily jewelry that is friendly to the planet and supports positive change around the world.

Your Diamond Does Good in the World DIAMONDS, FORMED BILLIONS OF YEARS AGO, ARE IMPROVING THE PRESENT AND CREATING A SPARKLING FUTURE

B

efore there was life, there were diamonds. In ancient Greece, they were known as “tears of the gods.” Created by rare natural conditions billions of years ago, they are the oldest thing a person will touch or own.

However, diamonds are not simply a connection to the distant past. Today, modern diamond mining supports the livelihoods of 10 million people around the world. Through skilled jobs, improved access to healthcare, and direct investments in local communities, diamonds strengthen communities across the globe as they travel from mine to jewelry box.

Kesego Jarona is one of the millions of people for whom diamonds tell a very personal, life-changing story. The first female electrical apprentice at the Debswana company in Botswana, Jarona saw first-hand that modern diamond mining offers opportunities for personal and community growth. “Mining inspired me when I was a schoolkid growing up in the mining town of Selebi Phikwe,” she says. Mining jobs are often highly skilled and are supported by extensive investments in worker training and education. The industry provided Jarona with educational opportunities that gave her control over her future. “I rose from being an artisan in a male-dominated field to become a fully-fledged mining engineer,” she says. In addition to providing tens of thousands of safe, well-paying jobs that often become lifelong careers, modern diamond mining creates $292 million of benefits annually for social programs, such as funding local hospitals and education. And considering most diamonds are discovered in remote regions—from the edges of the Kalahari Desert to Canada’s far north—where sustainable development resources can be scarce, these opportunities are often vital to communities writing their next chapter. Supporting the future of these communities also means aiding their children today. Around the world, families from remote regions often have to travel long distances to obtain the care their children require.

DPA_AccentMagSpread_06F.indd 1

“The diamond industry is not just a fixture in our community. It is a part of our lives. Diamonds to me represent more than natural beauty. For us, they symbolize a future of possibilities.” DR. MOKGWEETSI E. K. MASISI, PRESIDENT OF BOTSWANA

In the Siberian city of Yakutsk, Russia’s ALROSA provided critical funding for the construction of a children’s rehabilitation center in 2014. The $12 million center now provides therapy for 3,000 children each year with a range of physical and psychiatric disorders. The center includes a hotel for those families that need to travel from other regions to receive care. For the mother of three-year-old Sasha, who has cerebral palsy and hardly walks or talks, the center is invaluable. “Today my son waved his hand to me for the first time in his life,” she said on a recent visit to the center. “The diamond industry is not just a fixture in our community. It is a part of our lives,” explains Dr. Mokgweetsi E. K. Masisi, president of Botswana. “Diamonds to me represent more than natural beauty. For us, they symbolize a future of possibilities.” For centuries, humanity has been captivated by diamonds. They connect us across centuries and nations; they communicate beyond language and between generations. Today, these links are stronger than ever, and are building a better future for all.

Perpetual Excellence

The Datejust is a watch for the ages, reflecting its maker’s commitment to longevity, reliability and continuity. By Christen Fisher When you look in the mirror, what do you see? It seems like a silly question, but our reflection evolves over time, and we don’t always stop to think about how we’re changing. Rolex is a brand that perpetually checks its proverbial reflection, recognizing itself as it is, and asking what it can do better with regard to its product offerings—such as the Oyster Perpetual Datejust 36. As a result, Rolex has pushed beyond the usual understanding of what it means to be a luxury company. First introduced in 1945 at a jubilee celebration of the company’s 40th anniversary, the Datejust was the first selfwinding waterproof chronometer wristwatch to have an automatically changing date window at 3 o’clock on the dial. It was the culmination of every major innovation Rolex had contributed to the modern wristwatch until that time, but Rolex wasn’t satisfied. In 1953 it pushed the boundaries of innovation again by introducing a Cyclops magnifier over the date window in the crystal to increase readability. While the Datejust was first offered only in a yellow gold Oyster case with matching jubilee bracelet, Rolex continued to refine the Datejust’s classic aesthetic and superior engineering, offering this groundbreaking watch in myriad combinations and sizes for almost 75 years. The Datejust is a testament to the brand’s core values of longevity, reliability and continuity.

This year Rolex debuted two new variations of the Oyster Perpetual Datejust 36, both in white Rolesor, a proprietary combination of Oystersteel and 18-karat white gold. The first version has a black sunray finish dial and fluted bezel, while the second combines a white mother-of-pearl dial with 10 diamond hour markers in 18-karat white gold settings and a bezel set with 52 brilliant-cut diamonds. Thanks to a patented Twinlock screwed-down crown, a hermetically screweddown caseback and a middle case crafted from a solid block of corrosion-resistant Oystersteel, the Oyster case of the Datejust 36 is guaranteed waterproof to a depth of 100 meters. As it has since 1955, the watch’s sapphire crystal is still fitted with a Cyclops lens at 3 o’clock for easy reading of the date. The latest versions of the Datejust 36 are equipped with the new, entirely in-house 3235 caliber movement and have a power reserve of approximately 70 hours. Rolex and its products are built to last. They are, in a word, perpetual. Having registered for more than 500 patents throughout its history, Rolex perpetually pushes the boundaries of innovation, striving for excellence. When you look in the mirror, see yourself wearing a Rolex Oyster Perpetual Datejust 36 and know you, too, can push beyond your limits.

Collect ’em like Beckham

IF WE HAD TO PICK THREE…

Victoria Beckham’s Rolex watches, including these three standouts below, are among the ones true collectors really, really want:

This Spicy celeb’s feeling about luxury watches? You simply can’t have too many. By Haley Longman

When it comes to arm candy, Victoria Beckham has the rest of us beat. Often seen on her arm is her husband of 20 years, David Beckham, Britain’s most famous “footballer” (that’s soccer star to us) and America’s favorite male underwear model. But perhaps the timepieces on her wrist have us even more envious. The woman formerly known as Posh Spice didn’t start out as a watch aficionado. She shot to fame as one-fifth of the iconic British ’90s pop group the Spice Girls, the best-selling female group of all time, before this most stylish Spice launched her eponymous luxury fashion line in 2008. In between and since that time Beckham married the love of her life, had three sons and then a daughter, befriended A-listers like Eva Longoria and Katie Holmes and built a fashion and lifestyle empire, not to mention her own personal closet. She’s an accessories enthusiast reputed to own more than 100 Birkin bags—and bags aren’t her only bag. “I’m quite obsessed with sunglasses,” Beckham has also said. “I collect vintage Guccis and Carreras— they can make virtually any outfit look cool.” Undoubtedly, the same can be said for her vintage watches. Like her husband, who’s been an ambassador for both Breitling and Rolex-owned Tudor, the 45-yearold has a penchant for men’s timepieces, Rolex in particular. She wears her 36MM 18K yellow gold Rolex Day-Date President

almost as often as she wears her signature sky-high heels. Seriously, you’d be hardpressed to find a photo on her self-titled Instagram account in which this piece does not adorn her left wrist. Another gem from her jewelry box that she sports often is her gold Daytona with in-house automatic Caliber 4130, which adds a subtle burst of masculinity to her overall feminine, flirty style. Then there’s the yellow gold Rolex Datejust with a 36MM case size and a stunning stella green dial, a rare iteration of the DayDate Presidential Rolex. This piece hails from the 1970s and is highly coveted—as are most of the Brit’s appurtenances. Two of Beckham’s more recent timepiece additions are from Patek Philippe, because doesn’t any legitimate collection require variety? There’s her rose gold Nautilus with a brown dial and another that’s silver with blue, watches she wears when hanging out with her children (the former) or at a fashion show at Paris Fashion Week (the latter). It’s no wonder Victoria’s vault, as well as her husband’s, is so expansive. Each member of the British power couple is worth a reported $450 million, which means plenty of discretionary income to spend on dozens of multi-thousand-dollar watches (and whatever else their hearts desire). Who knew a collecting hobby could be so…posh?

Though it’s typically classified as a men’s watch, Posh wears her everose gold Cosmograph Daytona beautifully. In 2011 she even got shoe designer Brian Atwood to make her a custom pair of rose gold heels to match.

Many famous women are proud owners of the Rolex President Day-Date in 18K yellow gold. Beckham’s has a fashion-forward fluted bezel.

The Oyster Perpetual Cosmograph in gold is one of Rolex’s—and Beckham’s— most classic and coveted timepieces.

HAMILTON

Mayer is known around Hollywood for his beguiling ways and has used his charms to seduce his famous friends into becoming fellow watch collectors. Andy Cohen, host of Watch What Happens Live purchased a Rolex and Kevin O’Leary, entrepreneur and shark on Shark Tank, invested in pieces from Rolex and Patek Philippe after consultations with Mayer.

Cool and Collected

Singer-songwriter John Mayer says his vintage watches keep him sane. No need for the rest of us to be mad with envy. By Donna Rolando Don’t be taken in by John Mayer’s ruse. Yeah, he puts up a good front as a purported singer, songwriter, guitarist, record producer and sometime comedian, columnist and blogger. And those seven Grammys make persuasive props. But as he confessed to Britain’s Daily Mail in 2010, that’s all just a cover. “It’s like being in the CIA,” he said. “It looks as if I’m touring the world playing gigs, but I’m really on the hunt for watches.” In truth, no secret life seems beyond the capabilities of this multi-talented, 42-year-old musician. Fans the world over applaud his tunes—even his leadership of a Grateful Dead resurrection band. But there are also a goodly number who look to his wrist for inspiration. It’s a wrist The New York Times has called “a wonderland”—a nod to his single, “Your Body is a Wonderland,” just one of the hits credited to this often controversial Connecticut native with six studio albums so far. Mayer has said his vintage watches keep him sane. But he values his collection at “tens of millions,” and even Park Avenue psychiatrists don’t charge that. Like the late movie superstar Paul Newman, known for his rare 1969 Rolex Daytona Reference 6241, and comedian Ellen DeGeneres, who is seldom without a great watch, Mayer has an insatiable mania for a quality timepiece—and a cultlike following eager to see his next choice. It is said that “Talking Watches,” a video interview Mayer did with the watch website Hodinkee, has been viewed almost 2 million times since its 2013 launch, and his collection is big enough for a sequel. Variety is the spice of Mayer’s life, both in music (his genres range from pop to blues, even touching on country and soul) and in his watch collection. He recently wore the Rolex GMT-Master II “Batman,” so named for its black-and-blue color combo, on Watch What Happens Live—but is also proud to own the self-winding Royal Oak Concept, the ultimate in high-tech watches from the luxe Swiss brand Audemars Piguet.

Another highlight of Mayer’s timepiece treasure trove is the Patek Philippe Ref. 5004G in white gold with salmon dial and luminous hands, about which he says, “This watch has better taste than I do sometimes.”

FACE TIME

John Mayer’s time on the road serves double duty: He performs for millions of fans and hunts for rare and vintage watches. Here, we did our own search for similarly gorgeous timepieces. The rubber strap on his Patek Philippe Aquanaut is tough—and sexy—enough to wear while jamming all night long.

Mayer admits that he has a special affection for the Daytona, yet he shows his individuality by wearing models that are not Paul Newman. For example, possibly for nights on the town, there’s the rare Rolex Daytona Ref. 6269 with almost 300 diamonds, or the 6263 in 18K yellow gold, also a collectible, which Mayer says just may be “the coolest gold Rolex ever made.” During his interview with Hodinkee, Mayer explained why he doesn’t always follow the Hollywood crowd to the Paul Newman: “I remember seeing prices on the Paul Newman Daytonas skyrocket and thinking to myself that it was time to let go of those pieces and focus more on the plain Jane, non-PN versions. I’m glad I did, for several reasons—the least of which is that I can wear them without any doubt that they’re unquestionably authentic.”

This unblinged-out version of Mayer’s Rolex Daytona Ref. 6269 is still quite Hollywood even without the diamonds.

But no real watch collector can totally resist Paul Newmans, so Mayer’s wonderland does include a black bezel Paul Newman Daytona 6264 with a dial similar to the rare 6263 Oyster Paul Newman. It’s true that the unmarried Mayer’s love life, which has included names like Jennifer Aniston, Jennifer Love Hewitt, Jessica Simpson and Katy Perry, is what tends to draw headlines. But what many also should know about him is the extent to which he gives back. When wildfire destroyed 12,000 acres in Paradise Valley, Montana, where he lives, he was quick to help raise more than $100,000 for the firefighters. In 2002 he created the “Back to You” nonprofit to boost health care, education and, of course, the arts, and he auctioned off John Mayer items such as guitar picks and T-shirts in support of this work.

Mayer’s prize Patek Philippe is similar to this Perpetual Calendar Chronograph 5970G.

Maybe someday one of his coveted watches will be on the auction block, so start collecting pennies.

his and hers: the gift of time A Patek Philippe Calatrava watch speaks eloquently about what is most precious. By Christen Fisher “Time for each other” is the number one item on every couple’s gift list this holiday season. But in today’s frenetically paced world, when our cups brim over with obligations to work, family, friends and causes close to our hearts, this simple wish can feel like asking for the moon. Fortunately, Patek Philippe, the world’s premier Swiss watchmaker, has a long history of miraculous innovations involving time and offers a solution: Give each other the gift of time, with a timepiece so extraordinary it makes an irresistible plea for the true priority on your calendar—love. Present the man in your life with a Calatrava 5227R. The Calatrava boasts an elegant ivory lacquered dial with goldapplied hour markers and features a center sweep second hand and a date aperture. The watch’s self-winding 324 S C caliber movement is housed in a 39mm rose gold case with a sapphire crystal caseback protected by an invisibly hinged dust cover on a shiny dark chestnut alligator strap with square scales on a prong buckle. With its pure lines, the Calatrava is recognized as the very essence of the round wristwatch and one of the finest symbols of the Patek Philippe style. Supremely elegant, it charms each new generation of watch lovers with its timeless understated perfection. Priced at $31,160. Reciprocate her generosity with a Ladies’ Calatrava 7200R. Equally elegant yet suited to her sensibilities, the 7200R has an ultra-thin, self-winding mechanical movement Caliber 240. In delicate rose gold on a matte pearly beige alligator strap with

square scales and prong buckle, the 7200R is a ladies’ wristwatch fully focused on hours and minutes. It indicates not seconds, nor the date, nor other extras—only the time in its most unhurried manifestation. Designed for women who methodically devote their attention to the essence of things, it epitomizes timelessness in classic, feminine perfection. Priced at $28,240. For the couple who feels pulled in a million different directions all over the world, consider the Calatrava Pilot Travel Time, available as reference 5524R for gentlemen and 7234R for ladies. Both versions are powered by a caliber 324 S C FUS mechanical, self-winding movement, and feature a second time zone and local-time date to help the two of you connect even when you’re on opposite sides of the globe. Both have a brown sunburst, black gradated dial with gold applied numerals and luminescent coating and are housed in a rose gold case fitted to a vintage brown calfskin strap with clevis prong buckle. The only difference is size: The 5524R is 42mm, while the 7234R is 37.5mm. In either size, the Calatrava Pilot Time Travel is an inimitable timepiece whose dashing aeronautical style is perfect for the couple deeply devoted to each other but always on the go. Priced at $49,560 and $44,790, respectively. If you love him to the moon and back, if she’s your happily ever after, let a treasure speak for you about the hours you treasure most. You don’t have forever, but you’ve got time.

Exchanging trinkets is a sweet holiday tradition, but truly discerning couples make a chic statment by gifting his and hers Patek Philippe Calatrava timepieces.
