Join us for a cup of coffee... and a second opinion When the markets turn as volatile and confusing as they have over the last several years, even the most patient investors may come to question the wisdom of the investment plan they’ve been following.

We’d like to help – starting with a cup of coffee and a second opinion. By appointment, you’re welcome to come in and sit with us for a while. We’ll ask you to outline your financial goals — what your investment portfolio is intended to do for you. Then we’ll review the portfolio for and with you. If we think your investments continue to be well-suited to your long-term goals, we’ll gladly tell you so. If, on the other hand, we think some of your investments no longer fit with your goals, we’ll explain why, in plain English. And, if you like, we’ll recommend some alternatives.

Either way, the coffee is on us! For a free consultation, please contact my office at 201-505-0472 and let us know if you like milk or cream, or you want us to bring the coffee to you. Eric L. THE GUIDE

EVENTS, NEWS, TIPS & TRENDS MCLAREN’S POWER TO WOW ON DISPLAY

| DRIVE PRESTIGE

Few cars today deliver the same shock and awe as the 2018 McLaren 720S. Every aspect of this new model is meant to create an unparalleled driving experience and add to the company’s lineup of luxury sports cars. The exterior lines perfectly flow to give the car a beautiful appearance and make it more aerodynamic. Other aesthetic highlights include McLaren’s distinctive doors as well as its folding driver display, which provides a better range of vision for anyone sitting in the captain’s seat. The 720S can race down the track or road with extreme power. The V-8 engine generates 710 horsepower and a top speed of 212 mph. More music to an enthusiasts’ ears? This car can accelerate from 0–60 in 2.8 seconds. The combination of power and its striking appearance make the 720S fun to drive and admire. McLaren found a perfect formula to create its newest model, and it is sensational. This supercar has many features inside and out that set it apart from other exotic cars on the market.

The 720S comes with McLaren’s familiar dihedral doors, making the car easier to enter and exit. Its sharp angles and power were inspired by the great white shark—it can smoothly accelerate out of turns and go from 0 to 60 in 2.8 seconds. With more than 710 horsepower propelling it forward, the 720S can reach a top speed of 212 mph.

HOT RODS PAINT THE TOWN People leaving work in Midtown Manhattan on April 20 were stopped in their tracks by the new McLaren 720S that was unveiled outside of Lounge 48 at 6 p.m. About 60 people attended the McLaren Bergen County event, which featured drinks and passed hors d’oeuvres at the popular lounge. In addition to checking out the 720S, guests also had a look at the McLaren 570GT, a BMW i8 and a Jaguar F-Type. With plenty of food, drink and great conversation centered around the hot rides, the event ran late into the evening, with the 720S finally leaving the venue at around 11 p.m.

THE GUIDE CARS & COFFEE, PERFECT TOGETHER On Sunday, June 4, car enthusiasts gathered at Prestige BMW in Ramsey for a Cars & Coffee event (at left). While enjoying coffee, bagels, pastries and juice, they checked out sporty BMWs, plus one-of-a-kind McLaren and Lamborghini models, including one of the Prestige Lamborghinis that is racing in the Super Trofeo North American series this year. Radio personality and Caffeine and Carburetors co-founder Peter Bush MC’d the event, and Dinan, the accessories representative from BMW, was on hand to answer questions and meet customers. The next Cars & Coffee event took place July 9 at Prestige Motors in Paramus and featured various new and vintage Mercedes-Benz models as well as exotic cars.

A GROWING FAMILY: LEXUS OF MIDDLETOWN Prestige Family of Fine Cars officially welcomed a new dealership to the family when the Prestige Lexus of Middletown held its grand opening party in July. The event was memorable, as the entire town was invited, including the mayor, the police and fire departments. Guests enjoyed drinks, hors d’oeuvres and a golf simulator while checking out the latest Lexus models. The 30,000-square-foot dealership has been open at the intersection of Route 6 and 17M since January and is devoted to taking excellent care of the customer. He or she can drive right inside the new facility for service, and the dealership offers a free car wash and interior vacuuming upon each service visit, no matter how much the service costs, from an oil change on up. The dealership joins Prestige Pre-Owned of Orange County, which sells all makes and models, including cars from the company’s other stores including BMW, Merecedes-Benz, MINI Cooper, McLaren and Lamborghini.

NIGHT OUT FOR MOM

18

DRI.ss17.guide.indd 18

Linda Goffredo, of Mahwah, was recently named the Mom of the Year by Prestige Toyota in Ramsey and won a Highlander for the weekend, a beautiful bouquet of flowers and a gift certificate for dinner at Bici, an Italian restaurant in Ramsey. “It was nice just to be nominated, and then when I got the call that I won, that was pretty cool,” says Goffredo. “Out of 1,175 votes, they told me I got 818, and it just makes me realize that there are so many people out there to support us, and that felt really nice. I can’t believe so many people took the time to vote for me.” The community has rallied around Goffredo since last May 17 when her then 15-year-old daughter suffered a serious brain injury from lack of oxygen as a result of going into cardiac arrest due to anaphylactic shock. “They’ve given me courage and strength,” says Goffredo.

STELLAR STUDENTS INTERN AT PRESTIGE Have you heard about the students working behind the scenes at Prestige? In 2006, the Prestige family of dealerships established an endowed scholarship program that awards internships to students from Ramapo College. There are usually two to three interns each semester working in Prestige’s marketing department, doing social media, events and graphic design projects. Interns have worked on the LEED certification of the MINI building, the Concours d’Elegance to benefit Hackensack University Medical Center Foundation and Ramapo College, and the Ramapo Golf Outing, among other projects. A current employee, graphic designer Kelly Loveman of Mahwah, started as an intern in 2014. “I really enjoyed my internship,” she says. “I learned a great deal and it taught me a lot about working with other people.” When she graduated, she jumped at the chance to work at Prestige full-time. “I feel really lucky,” she says. And Ramapo College is grateful for the experience afforded to its students. “It’s a hands-on experience with measurable results,” says Liz Kloak, coordinator of foundation and college events at the school. “The amount of work that Chris [Turner] and the marketing team allows them to do—it’s not a fluffy internship. They are on the website, they are doing social media. They get the Prestige name out there, and they increase attendance at events.”

Mad for MINI

| DRIVE PRESTIGE

You’d be hard-pressed to find a more enthusiastic MINI owner than Prestige customer Theresa Mello of Hackensack. MINI Takes The States? She’s done it twice. Track Day at Lime Rock? She was there. MINI Movie Night at the drive-in in Warwick? Yes. The Toy Rally in December? Yup. Apple picking with other MINI owners? Of course. You name a MINI event, and Theresa Mello was front and center. This Hackensack music teacher got her ice blue Cooper S in June 2012 from Prestige MINI in Ramsey, and over the past five years, she’s rarely missed a chance to celebrate the car she loves and connect with other likeminded MINI owners. “It’s about so much more than just the car,” says Mello. “It’s the community. The people. Everyone is so unique and has their own story, but when we come together, we have this common love of MINI. I’ve made friends from all over. We all look out for each other.” Mello knew nothing about the supportive community she would be joining when she first purchased the car. She just knew she loved the way it drove. “I love the pickup, and I love the power,” she says. “They are fuelefficient and easy to park. I also love how you can make it your own. I had

bonnet stripes put on mine. I love how you can tailor it to how you want it.” When Mello bought her MINI, Prestige Motoring Advisor Suditi BalaChin gave her a rubber duck to celebrate her car’s birthday. Ever since then, Mello has collected ducks at every MINI event she attends. “When we meet new people, we either give them a duck or trade ducks, and we sign them with our licence plate number or our car’s name,” she explains. “I always have ducks on my dashboard, and I change them with the season.” Mello’s husband had been “along for the ride” with her MINI obsession when a year ago, Bala-Chin called them and said she had a Countryman available for lease. “He had had an awesome experience vicariously through me, so he decided he wanted to lease the Countryman,” Mello says. “He loves it too, although we made a deal. My car is the rally car, and his car is the family car. When we are out for fun, we take mine!” Mello knows she chose well when she chose MINI. “They are the best,” she says. “I am a MINI owner for life. No doubt about it.”

MUSIC

SONIC BOOM

FLO MORRISSEY

Despite what some trolls say, we’re living in a Golden Age of original music. Give a listen to these four performers, and you’ll agree. By Mark Dowden

BEN HARPER Growing up to be a singer-songwriter was a natural path for Ben Harper. His grandparents owned a store called The Folk Music Center and Museum, whose patrons included Leonard Cohen and Taj Mahal. At age 9, Harper heard Bob Marley perform live, and Marley has been an influence ever since. Harper’s work spans blues, folk, reggae, rock and soul, with lyrical themes ranging from protest music to love songs. In mood and sonic range, his latest album, in particular, is a rewarding roller-coaster ride. The album: Call It What It Is Go-to song: “Shine” Deeper dives: “Fool for a

Newcomer Flo Morrissey, a 22-year-old Brit, was drawn to folk music from an early age. Her debut album features her original songs—earnest, pastoral works written from a teenage point of reference. Morrissey has said she gets along better with older people than kids her own age, and certainly her velvety voice sounds like that of a seasoned performer. Her latest effort, released this January, is an album of cover duets with Matthew E. White. These two have fantastic chemistry; the tracks bounce merrily along as the two performers trade verses. The album: Gentlewoman, Ruby Man Go-to song: “Look at What the Light Did Now”

Lonesome Train” and “In the Colors” from Lifeline

Deeper dive: A surprisingly hypnotic version of “Grease” (yes, that “Grease”)

AARON LEE TASJAN Ohio native Aaron Lee Tasjan writes gritty lyrics. The Smoky Mountain News put it this way: “Tasjan’s words are soaked in spilled whiskey, misunderstood tears and dusty memories. Each number seeps into the cracks of your troubled soul.” Roger that. In New York City, Tasjan found himself as lead guitarist of the New York Dolls and also formed his own band, The Madison Square Gardeners. But it was after moving to Nashville in 2013 that the heartachy lyrics started flowing like so much Tennessee whiskey, and his solo career blossomed. The album: Silver Tears Go-to song: “Memphis Rain” Deeper dives: “12 Bar Blues” and “Everything That I Have Is Broken”

NEKO CASE

| DRIVE PRESTIGE

While attending art school in Vancouver, Neko Case cut her musical teeth as a drummer for local punk bands. She recorded lead vocals for songs that ended up on The New Pornographers’ first album, which was meant as a side project for its musicians but catapulted the band to surprise indie success. A season of speed

After a season-high four championships last year, Prestige Performance and Wayne Taylor Racing are hoping for another successful showing in the Lamborghini Super Trofeo North American Series. By Marisa Sandora The pressure is on this year for the Prestige Performance and Wayne Taylor Racing program. In 2016, they raced two cars in the series and saw incredible success, taking home the Lamborghini Super Trofeo North American PRO Driver, PRO AM Driver, Team Champion and Dealer Champion titles. “No other team or dealer group has ever won four championships, so we are incredibly proud of that,” says Mark Laino, race program manager for Prestige Performance. This year, they are running a four-car program and once again partnering with Wayne Taylor Racing (WTR), a legendary group of motorsports veterans who maintain the cars. “They are a championship-caliber team

and have won at the highest levels of sports car racing,” says Laino. “They are the best in the business. This is our third season with them, and they are dedicated and committed to this effort.” The series kicked off the first weekend in May at the Circuit of the Americas in Austin, Texas, and Prestige Performance came away with two second-place finishes in the Pro class with car number 1, driven by Trent Hindman and Riccardo Agostini, and a third-place finish in the Pro-Am class with car number 57, driven by Pippa Mann. “We were a little bit disappointed we weren’t at the top of the podium, but that’s being greedy,” says Hindman, a 21-year-old wunderkind from Neptune, N.J., who was the 2016 Pro-Am Champion. “We’re proud of our second-place finishes, and we’re in a great position for the rest of the year.” Hindman says he was excited to come back and drive for Prestige/WTR again this year, praising his fellow drivers, crew and the entire operation: “It’s a very focused, dedicated group of individuals who communicate well with each other and work very well together.” With cars moving at upwards of 180 mph on the track, it’s a true team effort to make sure everything runs smoothly. “It is exciting to see the potential all of our amazing drivers and WTR’s crew extract from the Lamborghini Huracán LP 620-2,” says Laino. Next in the series was the historic circuit of Watkins Glen in New York. (See next page.) Then in August, they’ll compete at Road America in Wisconsin, after which are races at Virginia International Raceway. At the end of September, they’ll head to California for the Laguna Seca. And then they will travel to Imola in Italy for the World Final, scheduled for Nov. 16–19. “Our goal is to go out and perform at the highest level and to win a championship as we did last year,” says Laino. “It’s difficult. A lot of time and effort from a lot of different people go into this. But we want to show that we’re giving our all to racing in the same way that we give our all to our customers.”

glory at the glen The Prestige Performance Lamborghini Super Trofeo race team fired on all cylinders and had a successful weekend at the fabled Watkins Glen International from June 29–July 1. The car number 1 duo of Trent Hindman and Ricky Agostini set a fast lap during free practice 1 on Thursday morning, completing the grueling and technical 3.5-mile road course in a time of 1:47.194. In practice 2, the team worked on different setups— the driver practiced changes while engineers pored over data to determine what goes into the perfect qualifying lap. Qualifying took place Friday morning on “Go Fast Day.” The Prestige Performance team had a good first session, qualifying P4 with Hindman finishing in car 1 in 1:46.982 at 114.4 miles per hour. Cars 10 (driven by Michele Beretta/ Alex Popow, 57 (Dion von Molke/Pippa Mann) and 11 (Stevan McAleer) were each in the top 10 for overall qualifying. During Race 1, car 1 was set for a second-place finish, but an untimely mechanical issue sidelined the Lamborghini with two minutes to go in the race. McAleer drove his car number 11 to a third-place finish for Prestige Performance. The team of Popow/Beretta placed fourth, while von Molke/ Mann took third place in car 57 in the Pro Am class. Qualifying for Race 2 was as exciting as it could get— Agostini (in car 1) claimed the top spot, pole position, and

never looked back. From the start of the race, Agostini raced into the first turn in the lead and stayed in front going into the mandatory pit stop and driver change with Hindman. Hindman took the reins after a flawless pit stop, regained the lead and brought home a win. But it wasn’t an easy battle as he fought off a hard charging Austin Versteeg of DXDT Racing. Car 10 (Beretta/Popow) and car 11 (McAleer) gathered valuable points with fourth place and fifth places, respectively. “Overall the weekend was a very positive one for the Prestige Performance and Wayne Taylor Racing team,” Hindman says. “Good progress made during practice showed in qualifying, when Riccardo was able to score pole position for Race 2. Our first race of the weekend was looking solid for us until an extremely unlucky mechanical issue took us out of contention on the final lap. Luckily in Race 2 we kept ourselves out of trouble, in clean air and were able to bring home the Overall/Pro Class win. It was a really a big sigh of relief because of all the hard work put into this by the Prestige Performance team. I’m just happy Riccardo and I were able to finally deliver a victory for this amazing crew.” The Prestige Performance team’s next race was at Road America in Elkhart Lake, Wis., from Aug 4–6.

Beauty by the bay In the indulgent spirit of its Newport neighbors, the Forty 1° North hotel embraces bold 21st-century style. By Rita Guarna

Let’s say you’re a Gilded Age industrial magnate, come back to life in 2017. Nowhere will you feel more at home than in Newport, Rhode Island, your affluent contemporaries’ playground with its majestic old “cottages” (read: mansions). But you’re no fool. Once you’ve got your bearings, you’re apt to lay your head down—and moor your yacht—at a 21st-century hotel and marina on Thames Street called Forty 1° North. This gem—complete with city- and bay-front guest rooms, suites, cottages and lofts—gives the classic

Newport sensibility up-to-the-minute expression. Designed by Philadelphia-based DAS Architects, its shingled exterior, gabled roof and porches honor the town’s 19th-century architecture. The interior is modern but grand, with artfully deployed marble, onyx and platinum glass tile, a three-story capiz chandelier and a 9-foot-by-9-foot abalone shell sculpture in the lobby. French doors and “real” windows throughout the building allow fresh Newport breezes in. This is in keeping with the hotel’s eco-friendly ethos, which includes floor-to-ceiling windows to reduce the need for artificial light during the day; low-flow showerheads; and, instead of a morning newspaper, an iPad loaded with the digital version. Many guest rooms boast balconies and harbor views, and each has a gas fireplace. Forty 1° North offers two notable restaurants. There’s the family-friendly Christie’s, with a modern American menu and a burger that The Boston Globe once called one of New England’s 10 best. Meanwhile, The Grill is a dockside delight with succulent steaks, seafood and a raw bar to text home about. For cocktails, the Library, the Oval Bar, plus a private wine room, add to creature comforts. Guests are steps away from Newport’s Thames Street shops and restaurants and the International Tennis Hall of Fame. Also nearby are the century-old Newport Art Museum and St. Mary’s Church, where John and Jackie Kennedy tied the knot. And if you time it right, your Newport stay may include one of the town’s three famous summer festivals— jazz, folk music and international film. Or take an any-oldday stroll on the 3.5-mile Cliff Walk, a shoreline walkway that snakes past those comfortable cottages, relics of a day when opulent pads came without iPads. From top to bottom: There is plenty to see and do in Newport, from concerts at King Park Beach to the flower show at Rosecliff; historic St. Mary’s Church, Newport was the site of Jacqueline Lee Bouvier and John F. About 20 excited MINI owners attended Prestige MINI & MINI of Dutchess County’s Track Day at Lime Rock Park in Lakeville, Conn., on May 9. Arriving at noon, they were welcomed with a lunch of steak and mashed potatoes in the Infield Chalet before instructors introduced themselves and gave an informative talk about the dynamics of the vehicles. Then drivers prepared for the ride of their lives at the historic 1.5-mile sports car road racing circuit.

Each participant got a chance to drive the new autocross, the old autocross and the full course and were individually timed. Most drove their own cars, but five dealer cars were on hand if drivers wanted to try something new, like the supercharged Cooper S. They finished with a parade lap around the entire course before everyone gathered in the Chalet for goodbyes. “It was a real bonding experience for the drivers, says Hope Stone, event coordinator of Prestige Family of Fine Cars.

START YOUR ENGINES In Ted McLaren’s Auto-Icon Series of paintings, each subject is a study in light, shape and color. Ted McLaren always had a thing for cars. Formula One racing was his first love, and his first car was a 1958 Corvette—a dream machine for any generation. With a last name like his, it’s conceivable that McLaren was destined for a future involving cars, though he is unrelated to the McLaren who founded the British car company. McLaren is a packaging design engineer by trade. He holds more than 40 packaging-related patents and served as president of a packaging business in northern Ohio. But even a busy professional needs a hobby, and to relax, he turned to the canvas. (He’s been painting for fun since age 10 and attended the Ontario College of Art.) After restoring a 1964 Ford Mustang convertible, he discovered a special way to capture the essence of the classic car. Rather than painting the entire body of the vehicle, McLaren decided to feature a specific part of the car, focusing on its headlights and grille. McLaren has since completed dozens of auto paintings, hosted gallery shows and earned numerous awards. His work can be seen at mclarenautoart.com.

The sleek lines. The bright colors. These details on the cars contrasted beautifully with the gritty, industrial feel of the Prestige Warehouse in Mahwah, where Lamborghini Paramus and McLaren Bergen County recently invited a select group of automotive bloggers, photographers and writers to spend time with the Prestige Family Exotic Cars Collection. The space was the perfect backdrop to showcase the automobiles, both vintage and new, including a black 1965 Mustang that was used as the training car for the movie Gone in 60 Seconds, a McLaren 675LT and a Lamborghini Huracán Spyder. “It’s such a fabulous building,” says

Mark Laino of Prestige. “It’s got this great industrial look, and it has a personality. The lighting in it is amazing. It has a character and has an attitude.” The photographers’ passion for the cars was evident in the artful images they generated. “We like to see the cars through other people’s eyes,” says Laino. “That’s the interesting part. You can have the same car in the same position in the same light, but when different photographers take the same shot, the images will all be different.” The image on the cover of this issue of Drive Prestige was considered best in show and was captured by photographer Matthew Adorno of After.Hourz Photography.

A pool tucked under the stairs? It’s possible, as evidenced by this striking lap pool in London. The client wanted a gym, changing area, spa and pool space in the same narrow room under the glass staircase off the entrance hall, so controlling humidity was key, as was using low-chlorine cleaners, to avoid dampness and harsh smells affecting upper rooms. The original arched brick wall gives the space character.

This Eastern-themed pool in the basement of an urban home was designed as an escape from the hustle and bustle of life upstairs. Three Buddha heads inspire calm, as does the darkness of the area. A grid of recessed lights pulls the eye upward and makes the ceiling appear more distant. The walls and pool were covered in Portuguese limestone, unifiying the space and making it seem larger than it really is.

It was 2004, and the 32-year-old was vacationing with his wife, Pam, on a tasting tour in the up-andcoming wine region near Walla Walla, Washington, whose Mayberry feel offered a welcome break from their uptempo New York City lives. They wound up at familyrun Amavi Cellars, where Harrington sipped a 2003 syrah, then still in the barrel, and was wowed by its balance, a cross between New World fruit and Old World earthiness that struck him as combining the best of California and France. Thinking aloud, he remarked offhandedly: “If I were ever going to make wine, I would want to make a wine like this.” Now, Harrington was a genuine wine prodigy. At 26 he’d become the youngest person ever to pass the daunting Master Sommelier’s Exam, and in his early 30s—an age when some Bordeaux are just hitting their stride—he was overseeing beverage programs for such celebrity chefs as Wolfgang Puck and Emeril Lagasse. “Well, why don’t you?” challenged Jean-Francois Pellet, Amavi’s winemaker. “We’re going to have some extra fruit.” ’Nuff said.
