NEW YEAR, NEW DECADE, NEW ACHIEVEMENTS AT SBMC Saint Barnabas Medical Center (SBMC) has always been on the cutting edge of medical treatment, offering outstanding in-patient and out-patient care. And with this new year and new decade come some exciting new recognitions; SBMC was selected as a Top Teaching Hospital for 2019 by The Leapfrog Group, one of 55 hospitals in the nation to receive such a distinction. We are additionally proud to share that The Renal and Pancreas Transplant Division at SBMC has broken its all-time record for the number of kidney transplants performed in one year. During 2019, the team completed 351 kidney transplants, making Saint Barnabas Medical Center the largest kidney transplant center in the Northeast and one of the top kidney transplant programs in the country. Our transplant program offers an innovative and comprehensive array of living donation options that are available at only a few other leading transplant centers. Within the pages of the February/March 2020 issue of Morris/Essex Health & Life, you’ll learn about some of the latest medical technologies that help us uphold our reputation, including the newest guidelines for gastro-intestinal health—such as when to begin colon cancer screenings—an innovative heart valve-replacement procedure called transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) and some useful tips from a physician at The Burn Center at SBMC on how you can prevent fires and burns caused by your household pet. Turn to page 20 to find out more. As always, we hope you’ll find this installment of our magazine both informative and beneficial. We wish you a great and healthy start to 2020, and thank you for choosing SBMC for your care. Regards,

{ EDITOR’S NOTE }

A Toast to Your Health We know perfectly well that a month of 2020 has already slipped away—perhaps taking many of your well-intentioned New Year’s resolutions with it. But it’s become something of a tradition for us to celebrate well-being and fitness in our February/March issue. Maybe we do it to help you get back on track with your health goals, or perhaps it’s to give you a few extra tips and one last nudge to get started. For me, heeding the advice will certainly be easier—and more fun—with my new fitness tracker. If fitness technology doesn’t motivate you to get moving, perhaps your inspiration is in the stars. Turn to “Your Secret Workout Weapon” on page 32 and find out which exercise regimen matches with your zodiac sign. There’s one other thing I’m looking forward to this year: eating. Hear me out. Everyone loves to munch while watching TV or doing work in front of the computer—but there’s a better way to do it than digging into a bowl of chips. In “Swap Your Snacks” on page 26, Morris/Essex Health & Life sought the advice of two registered dietitians for snacking solutions. I can’t wait to try some of their tips. For those who can’t get around their sweet tooth, boy, do we have a solution for you. Starting on page 40, you’ll find three dessert recipes that will keep your cravings and your waistband at bay. I can’t wait to start baking! Of course, this issue has plenty more that we know you’ll find interesting. With Valentine’s Day around the corner, we offer both ladies and gentlemen looks that will turn heads on date night or any other day of the year. Guys, flip to page 14 for an impeccable outfit, and gals, we know you’ll like the styles in the fashion spread starting on page 34. And we didn’t forget the big holiday in March: This edition’s restaurant review on page 68 spotlights three Morris/Essex eateries that capture the spirit (and flavor) of St. Patrick’s Day. We’ll toast to that! Enjoy the issue!

MUTT-FRIENDLY MEALS Morris and Essex counties are booming with dog parks and pet stores, but did you know that some of their finest eateries welcome dogs? Chow down with your hound at one of these local restaurants, each of which caters to patrons of the two-legged and four-legged kinds with dog-friendly outdoor seating, bowls of water for your canine companions and more: • Avenue Bistro Pub, Verona • The Committed Pig, Summit • Just Jake’s, Montclair

• Plum on Park, Montclair • The Landmark, Livingston • Chestnut Café & Eatery, Nutley

(POLICE)MAN’S BEST FRIEND Is America’s Top Dog right here in New Jersey? We’ll find out on the current season of the A&E reality show, where Morris County Sheriff’s Office K-9 Section Detective Corporal Michael McMahon and his 3-yearold Belgian Malinois, Kaiser, have made their TV debut. The two filmed the competition series last year in Los Angeles, where they competed against other officer/K-9 duos in an obstacle course testing speed, agility, scenting ability and teamwork, and it’s airing now on the cable network. “Being part of the show was an awesome experience. My family and I are very excited about its release,” says Detective Corporal McMahon in a press release. Tune in to America’s Top Dog Wednesdays at 9 p.m. on A&E—we’ll find out in the season finale where Corporal McMahon and Kaiser place!

ing clothing. Recommerce, the selling of clothes and accessories that previously have been worn, is seeing a major boom these days, especially as it relates to childrenswear. Kids grow out of stuff faster than parents can buy it! And one of the women spearheading this trend locally is Cedar Grove mom of two Melissa Warren, who last year opened up her own e-commerce shop, Swankyco.com, which sells new and like-new baby and kids clothing—much of which is from designer brands. And if you want to shop the stylish mama’s own closet? Visit her Poshmark page @melbellawarren to buy yourself some used brand-name clothing so you can match your stylish kiddos. • Meanwhile, a mom in Rockaway is turning her personal tragedy into an inspiring platform. Dianne Grossman lost her 12-year-old daughter Mallory in 2017 to suicide as a result of bullying. Since then she’s become a motivational speaker, started a nonprofit called Mallory’s Army and most recently debuted her new YouTube series, The Parent Project With Dianne Grossman, which is the latest way that the activist is bringing visibility to bullying and mental health. Each episode discusses a different hot-button topic that parents may find hard to talk about with their kids—suicide, depression and loss—and features special guests who’ve had first-hand experiences. “This is combined with a spirit of hope, kindness and what we can do for ourselves and one another to make a valid commitment to support others,” Grossman says. “Although we cannot change the past, we can decide how the future will look.”

DID YOU KNOW? It’s no coincidence that New Jersey’s largest St. Patrick’s Day parade is right in our neck of the woods. As history has it, the firstever St. Patrick’s Day celebration occurred in Morristown on March 17, 1780, when George Washington gave his troops the day off to honor his Irish soldiers. The town continues the tradition nowadays by hosting a festive parade every year. This year’s is on March 14 and begins at noon at Town Hall and continues down South Street. See you there!

DINE OUT TONIGHT If one of your resolutions for 2020 is to become more adventurous with food—you know, by eating out at more than just your favorite spots in town—you’re in the right place. 13 restaurants in Morris and Essex counties made Yelp’s list of the Top 50 Places to Eat in North Jersey 2019. Check out the selections and their rankings below: #1 Missy’s Main Street Café, Rockaway #4 The Pasta Shop, Denville #6 Casa d’Paco, Newark #8 Bloom, Verona #9 Kim’s Sushi, West Orange #13 The Corner, Montclair #15 Saigon Subs & Café, Morristown #17 Sorriso Kitchen, Chatham #19 Sazon Latino Restaurant, Boonton #26 Bucco, Bloomfield #32 Benji’s Taqueria Mexican Grill, Caldwell #36 Pasha Mezze Grill, Lake Hiawatha #45 Vanillamore, Montclair

CULINARY CORNER

STREET ART REIMAGINED Graffiti is often associated with negative references and has a bad rap for being a form of vandalism, but a new exhibit at the Morris Museum in Morristown is proving that graffiti can be a true work of art. The “Aerosol: Graffiti” exhibit gave a dozen street artists in New Jersey free reign to spray-paint the walls freehand with bold sayings and caricatures of their choice. The result is a display that is the first of its kind in the United States and gives visitors a new adjective to describe graffiti art: beautiful. The exhibit is up and running most days from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. now until Sunday, March 15. Morris Museum, 6 Normandy Heights Rd., Morristown, 973.971.3700, morrismuseum.org

MAKING MOVES Pag’s Restaurant is leaving its Bergen County location at a Paramus golf course and setting up shop right in the heart of Nutley Center. Known most for its appetizers (aka “pagtizers”) and sandwiches, Pag’s is all-American dining that puts unique twists on classic dishes. Chef Stefanie Ferrara is taking over for Chef David Paglia at the new location and will be adding her own personal spin and techniques on salads, soups, burgers and entrées like flat-iron steak and butternut squash gnocchi. Also, we hear her specialty sangria is amazing. Pag’s Restaurant, 227 Franklin Ave., Nutley, 973.542.8776, pagsrestaurant.com

A FUN KIND OF OFFICE Meanwhile, another Bergen County outpost has set up shop here as well—let’s welcome The Office Tavern Grill to East Hanover! With locations already in Ridgewood, Summit and Morristown, The Office’s East Hanover spot opened its doors in January and is the fourth in North Jersey. And the menu at the brand-new location promises to include some of the franchise’s favorite items, including flatbread pizzas, French toast grilled cheese and a ground duck burger. There are also specialty cocktails and 40 rotating beers on tap. The Office Tavern Grill, 240 Rte. 10, East Hanover, 973.386.5850

THE PERFECT PREGAME It just got a whole lot easier to enjoy a pregame dinner ahead of the New Jersey Devils home games. In partnership with our state’s hockey team, Prudential Center in December debuted Yuengling 1829 Grill, a 13,000-square-foot restaurant on the first level of the arena branded by “America’s Oldest Brewery.” In addition to having over 65 beers on tap, the eatery also features food “stations” with the likes of pasta, salad, meats and, of course, game-day favorites like burgers and fries, plus additional dishes that change seasonally. Yuengling 1829 Grill will be open for business two hours ahead of all Devils games and before select concerts and events, so be sure not to eat ahead of time.

HISTORY IN THE MAKING About a year ago, Governor Murphy signed into law a new measure that requires boards of education to broaden social studies classes in middle and high schools to include LGBTQ-inclusive curriculum. And 12 schools in New Jersey will be among the first to do so in a special pilot program during the 2020-2021 academic year, including three here in Morris and Essex counties: Millburn Middle School, Newark Arts High School and Unity Charter School in Morristown. More than 50 schools statewide applied to be a part of this pilot program; the 12 selected ones will teach 45 lessons from September to June to students in grades 5, 6, 8, 10 and 12. These dozen chosen schools also will be given curriculum coaches and professional development training, along with other resources to ensure all goes well.

ONTO THE BIG LEAGUES

Here’s some major minor league news for one of Morris County’s own—Ed Blankmeyer has been tapped to become the new manager of the Mets’ minor league team, the Brooklyn Cyclones. The Seton Hall University alum (he played baseball there, naturally) is the “winningest” coach in St. John’s University history; he coached there for 40 years and sent about 100 players to the professional ranks. Blankmeyer is also a lifelong Mets fan, making him a perfect choice to replace Edgardo Alfonzo, who was recently reassigned as an ambassador for the Cyclones. “I’m looking for another mountain to climb,” Blankmeyer told The New York Post. “I just felt the time was right for me.”

{ TALK OF THE TOWN }

WELCOME TO

Glen Ridge

Nestled between bustling neighbors, this small town retreat is bursting at the seams with historic charm and untouched beauty. ESTABLISHED: 1895 POPULATION: 7,598 WEBSITE: GLENRIDGENJ.ORG

Small but mighty, Glen Ridge is a scenic and historic hideaway within Essex County for nature lovers and old souls alike. In fact, a 2015 Wall Street Journal profile on the tiny town (it clocks in at a mere 1.2 square miles) made the bold claim that “time stands still” in Glen Ridge. That’s crazy, right? Well, with untouched greenery and centuries-old residences that mimic the styles of yesteryear, it’s easy to see how this cozy, almostexclusively residential borough has maintained its timeless charm.

Part of Glen Ridge’s boastful beauty comes from the incredible architectural design that has graced the streets of the borough since the mid1800s. Homes in Glen Ridge each embody one of the major architectural styles of the mid-19th century including gothic, medieval and Victorian. To maintain this aesthetic throughout the town, Glen Ridge has employed a Historic Preservation Commission that must approve all construction projects in the historic district of the borough that is visible to pedestrians.

WHAT’S IN A NAME? Glen Ridge, which was

officially the Township of Glen Ridge Borough until it was (thankfully) shortened in 1993, received its nature-inspired name because it surrounds the glen along Toney’s Brook, a body of water that also flows through neighboring Montclair and Bloomfield.

ONE BRAINY BOROUGH

When it comes to education, Glen Ridge truly makes the grade. Not only has Glen Ridge’s public school district been consistently ranked by niche.com as one of the best in New Jersey for students (last year’s stats ranked it No. 42 out of 243), but the district also is regarded as one of the best places to teach in the state. With a 13:1 student-teacher ratio and over 70 percent of the school’s population being proficient in math and reading, Glen Ridge is one of the few schools in New Jersey to garner an A+ rating on the popular statistics website. Aced it!

HOME SWEET HOME Thinking about buying or selling a home here? The median home value in Glen Ridge is $670,552, up 3.8 percent from last year, according to Zillow. Home values are estimated to go up 2.4 percent in the next year.

FAMOUS FACES

STUART RICHARDSON HOUSE

Designed by the legendary Frank Lloyd Wright, the Stuart Richardson House off of Linden Avenue has become a historical landmark for locals and visitors alike. The structure is one of the last of Wright’s signature “Usonian”-styled homes and features a large display of floor-to-ceiling windows. The hexagon-shaped, Mid-century modern abode also includes a private pond and an updated swimming pool, and was listed for sale last year at a cool $1.2 million. According to the Frank Lloyd Wright Building Conservancy, the house is now under contract. Still, passersby can ogle the home’s unmistakable style from afar.

COMING UP ROSES

It’s only appropriate that a town nestled around such gorgeous greenery has a rose garden to its name! The Freeman Rose Gardens, dedicated to longtime Glen Ridge residents Clayton and Winifred Freeman, have become a spot to, well, stop and smell the roses in the borough. Maintained by local volunteers, the garden is a beautiful backdrop for family photos, an afternoon outing and community programs. The garden also houses a special memorial to late Glen Ridge resident and Olympic steeplechase runner Horace Ashenfelter, who helped care for the gardens until his death in 2018.

For a town that’s just 1.2 square miles, Glen Ridge sure has served as a home to a long list of actors, athletes and legends. Buzz Aldrin, one of the first men to walk on the moon during NASA’s historic Apollo 11 mission, was born in town and raised in neighboring Montclair; actor Tom Cruise, known as the leading man in the Top Gun and Mission: Impossible franchises, spent the later of his teenaged years living in Glen Ridge and graduated from Glen Ridge High School; and Ezra Koenig, known best as the lead singer of indie rock group Vampire Weekend, is a GRHS graduate too.

DINING OUT Getting hungry in Glen Ridge? Though the borough neighbors foodie havens Montclair and Bloomfield, you still can find some of the finest cuisine without leaving town! For a hearty lunch, stop by Just Sandwiches for a cheesy Reuben paired with their soup of the day. Later on, grab dinner at Fitzgerald’s 1928, a local tavern that serves up new American cuisine like juicy flat iron steak and barbecue saucesmothered baby back ribs, paired with an artisanal craft beer to wash it down.

DID YOU KNOW? Thanks to its picturesque, small town feel, Glen Ridge provided the perfect filming location for not one but two films starring Julia Roberts— 1998’s Stepmom and 2003’s Mona Lisa Smile. MSXHEALTHANDLIFE.COM

The days of open-heart surgery are medical history. Arash Salemi, M.D., clinical chairman of cardiothoracic surgery at RWJBarnabas Health—Northern Region, calls a new procedure to replace failing aortic valves nothing less than “a game changer.” The procedure, transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR), offers a minimally invasive option for surgeons to replace an old, narrowing valve, giving ever-more patients many more years of good heart health. Here, Dr. Salemi dives deeper into TAVR and its benefits for patients, which include no incisions, a shorter recovery period and, most importantly, fantastic long-term results. Q: What is TAVR? Is this considered among the more minimally invasive heart procedures? A: Transcatheter aortic valve replacement is aortic valve replacement without the need for an incision, without needing a heart-lung machine and without having to stop the heart. It is a suture-less technique. TAVR is minimally invasive both physiologically and anatomically. Physiologically, the standard of care for 50 years has been open-heart surgery, stopping the heart, during which time you replace the valve while organ function is sustained by the heart-lung machine. TAVR is less invasive physiologically because the heart maintains its pumping function throughout the procedure. It is anatomically less invasive because, typically, there are no incisions and you don’t need to enter the breast bone as you would with a surgical approach. Q: What makes TAVR a better procedure than other valve replacement operations? A: In terms of intermediate-term outcomes, TAVR and surgical replacement are similar. But TAVR, because of its minimally invasive nature, provides a much quicker recovery period. Patients generally are in the hospital for a day or two after the procedure. With open-heart surgery, while the longerterm results are similar, the recovery phase can last as long as six weeks. Q: How has it changed the way surgery is performed? A: It has changed the way we evaluate patients with aortic stenosis. It is very common for patients over age 65 to have some degree of narrowing. When the narrowing becomes severe, treatment is warranted and necessary. We have achieved great results with open-heart surgery, but over the past decade, TAVR has allowed us to provide care to a broader base of patients with a quicker recovery time. Q: Who is a candidate for TAVR, and who is not? A: TAVR was first invented for

patients at too high risk for standard valve replacement. Until TAVR, surgery was only for those patients who we thought could tolerate the operation. That means a large cohort of patients were left without treatment of a progressive heart condition. There are no medical therapies for aortic stenosis—no diet, no exercise regimen, no medication that can treat it. As the technology developed, we began to conduct clinical trials on patients who were healthier. These have demonstrated that patients ranging from low to high risk with open heart surgery all benefit from TAVR. Everyone with a narrowing of the aortic valve is now a candidate for TAVR and should warrant an evaluation. Q: What happens during the procedure? A: The TAVR procedure generally takes about one hour. Patients are typically sedated, with general anesthesia used in only about 15 percent of patients. It is typically performed through the arterial blood stream—95 percent of cases are performed through the femoral artery in the leg. A catheter with the new aortic valve is passed through the blood stream, and X-ray guidance is used to position it inside the patient’s diseased native valve. Then the new valve is expanded into that space. The old valve is pushed aside against the aortic walls, giving the patient a brand-new valve to allow adequate blood flow. Q: What is the recovery like? A: The patient recovers in the Intensive Care Unit overnight where we monitor blood pressure and heart rhythm. About one-third of our patients go home the following day, another third the day after that and the rest shortly thereafter. The average length of stay is a day and a half. There may be some soreness at the puncture site in the leg, but it is minimal. Patients typically take a baby aspirin as a blood-thinning agent every day thereafter, and we may add additional antiplatelet agents for up to six months, depending on the case. Patients are advised to take a couple of weeks off to get back on their feet and follow up with their doctors. There are no long-term restrictions. Q: How is the TAVR program at Saint Barnabas Medical Center (SBMC) expanding, and why? A: Because of the great outcomes and quick recovery, our TAVR program is expanding rapidly. We are streamlining our patient workflow and are expanding our team of surgeons, support staff and operating room locations so we can see patients three to five days a week and perform procedures expeditiously. We are also actively involved in numerous clinical trials in this space so that we may offer the most current therapies to our patients. Q: What else should the public know about TAVR and SBMC’s program? A: We are committed to patient care. Our goal is to provide the highest quality care to the broadest population of patients. TAVR is a transformative technology. It has been a paradigm shift in the care of aortic stenosis, and we are proud to offer it.

FIREPROOF YOUR FURRY FRIENDS

Michael Marano, M.D.

Pets may be adorable, but they are also fire hazards. A doctor at The Burn Center at Saint Barnabas Medical Center shares insight on how to keep both you and them safe. Michael Marano, M.D., medical director of The Burn Center at Saint Barnabas Medical Center, has seen everything when it comes to house fires and the damage they cause. And one common reason for which he sees patients is something you may not think about: fires caused by pets. “We definitely have patients who have fires where pets caused the problems,” he says. According to the National Fire Prevention Association, household pets are responsible for more than 1,000 house fires each year in the United States. “A cat doesn’t know not to jump on the counter with the candle. The dog doesn’t know not to tip the pot of boiling water over,” Dr. Marano says. Here, he offers some tips to help prevent fires and burns caused by Fido and Fluffy. • Keep your head clear. “About 80 percent of the people we see in The Burn Center are there because of impaired judgment,” he says. Whether it’s alcohol, drugs, mental illness, or an older adult with dementia or a small child, poor judgment leads to many fires and burns. “I would include pets—you can’t trust their judgment,” he says. More to the point, be sure your judgment is sound, and keep close watch on those with impaired capacities, pets included. • Blow out candles, turn off stoves and extinguish fireplace fires.

“Understand that you cannot leave your house with candles burning,” he says. “It seems like common sense, but you’d be surprised how often people forget to do this.” • Use flameless candles. Battery-powered candles have come a long way—they look remarkably realistic without being a safety hazard. • Keep pets out of the kitchen when cooking. Along with starting fires, pets can cause pots of boiling liquid or trays of piping-hot food to spill onto people, causing serious burns. Don’t let them get under foot when you’re busy preparing a meal. • Hide or cover electrical cords. Animals like to chew and may see a cord as a delicious chew toy. If frayed, it can spark a fire or result in electrocution with significant burn injuries. “I have seen that happen,” Dr. Marano says. Keep cords short, and if your pet likes to chew on them, spray them with bittertasting sprays (available at most pet stores) to deter them from doing so. • Cover stove knobs. If your cat or small dog likes to jump on the stove, he or she can accidentally turn the knob on and start a flame. (Young children can do the same, without the jumping, of course.) Covers and restricted access can prevent both from doing so.

THE SNACK: POTATO CHIPS THE SWAP: VEGETABLE CHIPS/EDAMAME To get your crunchy fix, ditch the greasy potato chips and carb-filled pretzels for some vegetable-based bites. Lindsay Yoakam, a registered dietitian for inpatient/outpatient care at Saint Barnabas Medical Center (SBMC) in Livingston, suggests slicing up hearty veggies (think carrots, beets and turnips) and drizzling them with a touch of olive oil before baking them to make a tasty, healthy alternative to your favorite chip. Don’t have time to prep your pickings for the day? Raw or quick-steamed edamame—soybeans still in their green-bean-like pods, often found in Asian cuisine—sprinkled with a pinch of sea salt is another nutrient-rich alternative when you’re looking for something salty on the fly. “Roasted veggies and edamame have more fiber,” says Yoakam. “Prepping your own batch of each allows you to control the oil content, which otherwise can be a sneaky way for extra fat to end up in your snack.”

THE SNACK: MICROWAVE POPCORN THE SWAP: AIR-POPPED “CHEESY” POPCORN Is there any snack more fitting to munch on while watching your favorite flick than a bowl of popcorn? Well, most microwave popcorns are packed with hydrogenated oils and loads of sodium, so our experts agree that air-popped kernels (clocking in at only 100 calories a serving) are always the healthier way to go. Deanna Schweighardt, a registered dietitian and certified diabetes educator at SBMC, suggests sprinkling a touch of parmesan cheese over the otherwise bland popcorn for a little added taste and calcium—or you can test your culinary savvy and make some nutritionist-approved “cheesy” popcorn. Schweighardt says a dash of nutritional yeast onto airpopped popcorn gives the kernels a cheese-like, nutty flavor that is the perfect healthy stand-in for a gourmet blend of popcorn, while adding a little vitamin B12.

THE SNACK: ICE CREAM THE SWAP: “NICE” CREAM You may have a favorite ice cream to curl up with after dinner, but that mint chocolate chip or even plain vanilla is loaded with sugars and fats. Instead, switch that ice cream to “nice” cream! Yes, “nice” cream—a low-calorie, vegan dessert of pulverized frozen fruits that becomes velvety and tastes sweet like regular ice cream when blended. “Banana with a little peanut butter is a good combination because by comparison, it’s much lower in fats and calories,” says Yoakam, while warning that you still should monitor serving sizes. Both she and Schweighardt also suggest frozen greek yogurt as a similar creamy dessert that’ll satisfy your sweet tooth. But if you’re a fan of packing on the wild and wacky toppings at the make-your-own bar, you may want to hold off on those extra fixings. “Hot fudge and caramel add lots of sugar,” says Yoakam. “At the end of the day, it’s about knowing what the sensible amount of your topping is.”

{ FOOD FOR THOUGHT } THE SNACK: PEANUT BUTTER THE SWAP: ALL-NATURAL NUT BUTTERS Peanut butter isn’t the world’s most unwholesome snack, but choosing a kind that’s heavily processed with lots of added sugars can be nuts from a health perspective. According to Schweighardt, any nut butter should have two ingredients: the nut and salt. “Whatever your flavor preference is, go for that and make sure that it’s natural with no sugar added,” she says. Another pro tip? Schweighardt suggests keeping your jar upside-down after each use, so the nut’s oils are already emulsified when you go back for it.

THE SNACK: MILK CHOCOLATE THE SWAP: DARK CHOCOLATE Sometimes there’s nothing more satisfying than a chunk of sweet, silky chocolate. But milk chocolate is often loaded with added sugars—a no-go for our nutritionists. Yoakam suggests that chocolate lovers opt for dark chocolate to satisfy a sweet craving and soak up the benefits of the food’s main ingredient: cacao. “Dark chocolate has less cream and sugar in it and more flavanoids,” Yoakam says. She also warns that chocolate is still a treat, so portion control is key when you’re indulging in the sweet stuff. So, is there a pro-approved tip for making that single square of chocolate go a long way? Schweighardt says to freeze your bar before enjoying, which will make the piece more time-consuming to eat and last longer. “You do lose some of the nutrients of that dark chocolate, but it’s worth it if that’s what you’re really craving!”

THE SNACK: PACKAGED SNACK BAR THE SWAP: HIGH-PROTEIN BARS While homemade options are usually best, most of us are guilty of quickly grabbing a snack bar “to go” before heading out for the day. Being mindful of what ingredients are in that convenient little bar, like added sugars and overlyprocessed fruits, makes all the difference in your healthy snacking regime, our nutritionists say. The solution? Grab a snack bar with high levels of protein and fiber, not sugar. Yoakam suggests opting for bars that are no more than 200 calories and have at least 10 grams of protein. Schweighardt has an even simpler rule of thumb for these handheld snacks: “Look for a bar with the least amount of ingredients. If you can’t pronounce what’s in it, why are you eating it?”

THE SNACK: CANDY THE SWAP: DRIED FRUITS Instead of giving into the sugary candies lurking in your desk drawers and candy bowl, invest in a package of dried fruits such as cherries, figs, pineapples and apricots that will deliver all of that same fruity flavor and then some. “Dried fruits have more minerals and fiber, but you still need to be careful of portion sizes with them,” says Yoakam. She also suggests dried fruit leathers as a snack alternative to the sugary stuff. Schweighardt warns that popping dried fruit all day in excess also isn’t the healthiest craving-buster, so she recommends a handful of fresh berries or other snackable fruits. “The closer you can find a food to how it’s grown in nature is always the healthiest option,” she says.

YOUR SECRET WORKOUT WEAPON:

THE ZODIAC Motivation is the key to exercise success. And the key to motivation? That just may be in the stars. By Rebecca Perry

Does this sound familiar? You make a decision to lose 10 pounds, take on a $20/ month gym membership, sweat vigorously for a couple of weeks—and a few months later find yourself tipping the scales right where you did last Thanksgiving. Life gets in the way, and you find yourself wondering wistfully what exercise plan you might actually feel comfortable with—and persist in—to achieve a healthier, trimmer you. If you’ve tried everything else, why not ask astrology? “The 12 zodiac signs are grouped into four elements—fire, earth, air and water,” explain the AstroTwins, official astrologers for lifestyle media brand mindbodygreen. “Each of these elementary groups has distinct traits.” As the theory goes, so do you. Decide which of the four elements you have an affinity with, and see if the advice that follows doesn’t get you snuggly in a workout groove. After all, isn’t your mind the “muscle” that really drives your exercise stick-to-itiveness? What have you got to lose—except maybe a few pounds? MSXHEALTHANDLIFE.COM

(Cancer, Pisces and Scorpio):

(Aries, Leo and Sagittarius):

For the empathetic and intuitive water signs, tranquility is the theme for your exercise routine. Say “see ya!” to crowded gyms and loud pop music, and “hello” to patient instructors and mindful silence. Not only can yoga help your resolution to shed those extra pounds (a single yoga session can burn between 180 and 460 calories), but it also helps build muscle, increase flexibility and relieve pain. Katherine Gonzalez, a Pisces and an amateur yogi, has been practicing yoga for 11 years. “Self-love is the most important part of my daily routine,” she says. “I make sure to do a brief stretch every morning and set my intentions for the day. Yoga basically lets us focus on the present.” Emphasizing the “now” is a vital component for water-sign individuals because of their tendencies toward regret of the past and apprehension for the future. Known for getting lost in their thoughts, water signs are constantly searching for a deeper understanding of themselves and the people around them. Relax by getting out of 2019’s obsolete workout program and replacing it with yoga, equally affordable but quite possibly twice as valuable to you. Places to try: Purple Om Yoga in Denville, South Mountain Yoga in South Orange

Are you a fire sign, passionate, strong and excitable? Why not reach for an exercise that fuels that fire, like Zumba? Everywhere you go you bring unmatched energy, and sometimes that means you become a little impatient. There is no workout alternative more lively than Zumba. Your competitive side will be charged up, as these classes are not as easy as they seem. Those in the front of the room have been practicing for ages, are on a first-name basis with the instructors and know all the routines—can you keep up? “I thought it was weird at first,” says Gabrielle Davidson, a Gemini and Zumba trainee. “It is the best cardio workout I’ve ever done!” Zumba is a huge calorie burner (reportedly between 350 and 650 per workout) and improves coordination. Plus, it’s loads of fun, whereas cycling burns a similar amount of calories but isn’t as entertaining. The energetic fire-sign exerciser is usually up for something different, and the instructors at studios and local gyms often change up their dance routines monthly, so you are never stuck in a cycle. Zumba is known for its social aspects as well, often placing you in a community of like-minded gym-goers. (See how many of you are fire signs!) And there are many intensity levels to choose from—true athletes may wish to try the “Strong by Zumba” version, which is more high-intensity than the regular Zumba classes. Get inspired, dear fire sign, and maybe find your new workout obsession along the way. Places to try: Hit the Barre in Montclair, Studio Allegro in Madison

EARTH

(Taurus, Virgo and Capricorn):

SPINNING

For the grounded earthsign who sometimes struggles with motivation, cycling is the best exercise. Maybe you are a retired athlete looking for something that re-ignites that teamwork mentality, or maybe you’re tired of that old gym routine that hasn’t yielded progress toward your health goals. Aquarius spinning instructor Patrick Chang says this group of folks “enjoys it because they are engaged as a group, grooving to tunes and learning how their bodies adapt to training zones.” Earth signs prefer structure, and Chang mentions that spinning facilities usually include “heart-rate monitors so that they can track recovery, endurance, strength and high-intensity interval training zones.” The workout is perfect for the earth sign’s logical mindset because your performance data is tracked, so improvement is tangible. Chang also says spinning should make you “feel invigorated, energized and ready to take on the world”—which is ideal for the stable and sensual earth sign. Places to try: Revolution Indoor Cycling in Pine Brook, Evolve Cycle and Fitness in Caldwell MSXHEALTHANDLIFE.COM

AIR

(Gemini, Libra and Aquarius):

PILATES

If you’re one of those witty, enigmatic and curious air signs, Pilates is exactly the refreshing break you have been looking for. It’s a low-impact exercise that aims to strengthen muscles, but it also helps with posture and flexibility. Why Pilates? Pisces Pilates instructor Susan Larson says: “I notice that my normally hard-charging athletes and clients are recognizing the value of stretching and more peaceful calming types of exercises such as yoga and Pilates, not only for their meditative and calming benefits but for injury prevention as well. Staying flexible is incredibly important for everyone, not just athletes!” So, even if you think weight lifting is perfect for you, incorporating Pilates can increase recovery time and flexibility. Those clever analysts, air-sign individuals, are thinkers like water signs, but are less concerned about emotions. You love learning new things, so trying something unique, “kinda weird” and challenging, like Pilates, is right down Air-Sign Avenue. Places to try: Mermaid Pilates in Morris Plains, Longevity Pilates in Verona

GONE TO THE DOGS

Resorts that cater to your best friend Can’t imagine vacationing without your pet? Don’t worry—some luxury hotels go out of their way to keep Fido’s tail wagging. From coast to coast, there are elegant hotels that not only treat you like a king or queen, but respect your pup’s royal pedigree too. Pets are welcomed—not just allowed—in these luxe lodges far from home, which pamper them with treats, concierge walking, lush grounds for romping and other perks. Five standouts are spotlighted here. Truth be told, it may cost a little more to take Fido along. But is your best friend worth it, or what? And think what you’ll save on kennel costs!

CYPRESS INN, CARMEL, CALIFORNIA Dogs will know they’re getting the luxe treatment when they’re served grilled chicken in a doggie bowl. But what could be more appropriate for an establishment that was co-owned by the late Doris Day, actress and animal rights activist? Right in the heart of Carmel, this historic landmark inn with 1920sera Spanish architecture has been called the nation’s most dog-friendly hotel. But it’s not only the inn that loves our furry friends. The city, too, is simpatico and puts out a dogfriendly guide to its attractions. For instance, dogs can run along the beautiful Carmel Beach or stroll on a leash through the quaint village where store owners are ready with a doggie treat and water. Other highlights—for humans— are king suites with fireplaces, live music in the hotel’s cozy living room and breakfast with fresh fruit and baked goods. Also check out Terry’s Restaurant & Lounge for Moroccan chicken, grilled rack of lamb and other fare made with fresh local ingredients. Is the lodging industry going to the dogs? Que será, será!

FOUR SEASONS HOTEL, HOUSTON, TEXAS

Ruff will feel like a VIP (Very Important Pet) when he stays with you in this swanky spot in jumpin’ downtown Houston. The hotel’s pet policy, says management, is designed so that owners are stress-free and don’t have to worry about their pets. A concierge handles daily dog walks and amenities like special bowls, toys and water bottles all to make the place seem like home. And if you prefer to take your dog for a longer walk, nearby Discovery Green is a great option. Humans can find their luxury pampering at Four Seasons’ Spa & Fitness Center. Discover a variety of massages to nurture your body, or have some fun with yoga and wine at a group exercise class. This spa, with many eye-catching features, made the cover of American Spa magazine in 2016. Then there’s the spacious lobby, which not too modestly calls itself “Houston’s Living Room,” ready for sipping, socializing or just relaxing. Also, don’t miss the chic bourbon bar, Bayou & Bottle, or the Topgolf Swing Suite, featuring golf simulators. While your dog lives the life of Riley at this raved-about facility, maybe you can focus on your game.

THE ST. REGIS ASPEN RESORT, ASPEN, COLORADO

THE PENINSULA HOTEL, NEW YORK, NEW YORK

Want to trade walking the dog for relaxing poolside with a strawberry daiquiri or spend more time on the powdery slopes? At this resort you have only to whisper your wish, and guilt is gone. The staff at the redesigned St. Regis, including a “fur butler,” is happy to take the leash for a while, and also provides bowls, treats and a doggie bed while you leave your cares behind at the Reméde Spa. (Try the soothing waterfall, oxygen lounge or the cold-andwarm plunge pools.) There’s also a fitness center and gift boutique. Although most people come for the slopes, that’s only part of the outdoor fun in a region also known for horseback riding, bicycling and whitewater rafting. By day, take Rover for a romp at Ruby Park only a few minutes away. By night, Mountain Social beckons you to sip a cocktail by the fireplace and reflect on this best-ever vacation for you and your four-legged friend.

Right down to its location—just four blocks from Central Park—The Peninsula is a pooch paradise. While you might visit for the abundant shopping and entertainment in Midtown Manhattan, your pet will love the park and the pampering that starts with a personalized welcome card and water bottle. Any dog 60 pounds or under is welcome. Fido will have all the comforts of home— a doggie bed, bowl and treats—and (if you’re in a suite) a collar, leash, bandana and small toy, all with the Peninsula logo. He’ll wag his tail and you’ll be worry-free as you discover the award-winning Peninsula Spa, the cutting-edge fitness center and the glass-enclosed pool. Perhaps, after a day of hitting the stores, your much-deserved rest will come on the sun terrace with its panoramic city views, followed by a taste sensation at The Peninsula’s signature Clement restaurant, and when the sun sets, a toast in the rooftop bar, Salon de Ning.

THE COTTAGES AT NANTUCKET BOAT BASIN, NANTUCKET, MASSACHUSETTS

For a laid-back beach experience both you and your pet will love, this inn offers 17 “Woof Cottages” that are often in demand. Dogs are greeted by their own pet concierge, a lab/spaniel named Bailey, who knows this famous island like the back of his paw. Guests and their pooches have all the comforts of home, including a full kitchen to make favorite meals, doggie beds, personalized pet tags and nautical chew toys— just right for lodgings with views of the blue harbor. Dog-walking services are available, but visitors may also enjoy taking a long trek with their pet at neighboring Sanford Farm. After making their pet happy, visitors can indulge themselves with a first-class massage or spa treatment at the nearby White Elephant Spa, where the scenery rivals the serenity you experience. Or hop on a complimentary bike for a tour of the town, perhaps stopping for a bite at one of the many eateries. There’s also a free bus to Nantucket’s beaches—a not-to-be-missed destination.

COFFEE AND BLACKBERRY MILLEFEUILLE Yields 6 servings

INGREDIENTS

np lain flour, for dusting n 5½ oz. ready rolled puff pastry n 3 Tbs. ground coffee n 4 Tbs. boiling water n 2 oz. soft ricotta n ½ oz. caster sugar n 3½ fl. oz. double cream n 10 oz. maple syrup n 1¾ chestnut purée n 3½ oz. blackberries, halved

DIRECTIONS

Preheat the oven to 350°F. Have two large baking trays and two large pieces of greaseproof paper ready. Flour a flat surface and a rolling pin. Roll the pastry out until it is 16 inches long. Sandwich between the pieces of greaseproof paper on one baking tray, and weigh down with the other baking tray on top. Bake for about 10 minutes, or until golden brown and crisp. When ready, remove from the oven and allow to cool. Meanwhile, prepare the coffee cream. Mix the ground coffee and boiling water together and leave to infuse for a few minutes. Strain through a cheesecloth, muslin or clean tea towel into a jug, squeezing out as much of the liquid as possible. Mix together the ricotta and sugar until smooth, then stir in the coffee. Whip the cream until soft peaks form and then fold through the ricotta mixture. Transfer to a piping bag fitted with a small round nozzle and refrigerate until needed. Mix together the maple syrup and chestnut purée and set aside. Trim the edges of the pastry and cut it into 20 rectangles, roughly 4-by-2 inches. You will have 20 pieces but only need 18, so use the best ones. To assemble, place six blackberries on a sheet of pastry and pipe cream in between. Top with more pastry and repeat. Place a final sheet of pastry on top and spread over a thin layer of the maple syrup and chestnut glaze. Repeat and serve immediately.

CHOCOLATE ROULADE WITH PASSION FRUIT MASCARPONE Yields 10 servings

INGREDIENTS

n5 ½ oz. dark chocolate, minimum 70% cocoa solids n 6 medium eggs, separated n 5½ oz. caster sugar n pinch of salt n ¾ oz. cocoa powder n 5 oz. non-fat Greek yogurt n 3½ oz. mascarpone cheese n 1 oz. clear honey n ½ oz. icing sugar n seeds of 4 passion fruits n salt

DIRECTIONS

Preheat the oven to 350°F. Line a 9-by-13-inch Swiss roll tin with greaseproof paper. Place the chocolate in a heatproof bowl set over a saucepan of simmering water, ensuring the bowl doesn’t touch the water. Stir occasionally and when melted, remove from heat and allow to cool slightly. In a large bowl, whisk together the egg yolks and sugar until pale and thick. Stir in the cooled chocolate. Whisk the egg whites with a pinch of salt until soft peaks form, fold a few spoonfuls into the chocolate mixture and then fold in the rest, working gently so as not to knock out too much air. Be patient—it will come together as you fold it. Sift over the cocoa and gently fold again. Pour into the prepared tin and bake on the middle shelf of the oven for 20-25 minutes, until firm and a little crispy. When done, place damp tea towel over the tin and allow to cool. This stops the roulade from drying out too much, which can make it crack when rolling. Mix the yogurt, mascarpone and honey until smooth. Lay a piece of greaseproof paper on a flat surface and sift over the icing sugar. Gently turn out the roulade and peel away the paper. Spread over the mascarpone, then the passion fruit pulp. Cut a shallow line 1 inch from the long edge of the roulade—this makes it easier to fold. Roll tightly, using the paper to help you. It will crack a little but this is fine. Slice and serve.

LEMON AND JUNIPER PORTUGUESE CUSTARD TARTS Yields 12 servings

INGREDIENTS n n n n n n

n n n n n n

½ oz. caster sugar 5 Peeled rind of one lemon 15 juniper berries 6 fl. oz. semi-skimmed milk 1 vanilla pod, halved and seeds scraped out 1 oz. plain flour mixed with 1 fl. oz. semi-skimmed milk to form a paste 4 large egg yolks, beaten butter, for greasing 13 oz. packet ready-rolled puff pastry 1 tsp. ground cinnamon grated zest of 1 lemon icing sugar, to dust (optional)

DIRECTIONS

Place the caster sugar, lemon rind and juniper berries in a medium saucepan with 3¼ oz. water. Bring to a rolling boil over medium heat, stirring to help the sugar dissolve. Simmer for 5 minutes, then remove from the heat and strain. Heat the milk with the vanilla pod and seeds in a saucepan until just about to boil, then strain and gradually whisk into the flour paste. Slowly pour in the sugar syrup, whisking continuously. Allow to cool slightly, then whisk into the beaten egg yolks in a bowl. Cover with plastic wrap and set aside to cool completely. Lightly grease a 12-hole muffin tin. Unroll the pastry, dust with the cinnamon and rub it in, then sprinkle over the lemon zest. Tightly roll it up lengthwise, like a Swiss roll. Cut 12 round discs 5/8-inch thick. Preheat the oven and a baking tray to 475°F. Lightly dust a surface and rolling pin with flour. Flatten each disc with your hand (with the swirls facing upward), then roll out big enough to be pressed into each muffin hole with a little above the rim. Fill each tart with the cooled custard until ¾ full. Place on top of the hot baking tray and bake for 18-20 minutes. Keep an eye on them—you want the top to be blistered and the pastry to be golden and crisp. Cool slightly, dust with icing sugar, if using, and serve.

SPECIAL SECTION

MORRIS COUNTY’S

TOP

DENTISTS 2020 TO HELP YOU FIND GREAT DENTAL CARE, Morris/Essex Health & Life commissioned Professional Research Services (PRS) of Troy, Michigan to conduct a peer-review survey of hundreds of practicing and active dentists across the county. Dentists were asked to choose which of their peers they consider the very best, across seven different practice areas—endodontics, general dentistry, oral and maxillofacial surgery, orthodontics, pediatric dentistry, periodontics and prosthodontics. All the final honorees were fact-checked with the State of New Jersey and the New Jersey Division of Consumer Affairs License Verification System. The highest vote getters within each specialty who are in good standing with the state are included here in the fourth annual “Morris County’s Top Dentists” list. There are many other good dentists practicing in Morris County who may not be included on this list; we recommend that you consider “Morris County’s Top Dentists” and other resources before scheduling your next dental procedure.

DENTISTS 2020 TO HELP YOU FIND GREAT DENTAL CARE, Morris/Essex Health & Life commissioned Professional Research Services (PRS) of Troy, Michigan to conduct a peer-review survey of hundreds of practicing and active dentists across the county. All the final honorees were fact-checked with the State of New Jersey and the New Jersey Division of Consumer Affairs License Verification System. The highest vote getters within each specialty who are in good standing with the state are included here in the fourth annual “Essex County’s Top Dentists” list. { POWER FOOD }

The Egg and You

Packed with protein and minerals, this staple food is everything it’s cracked up to be. Regardless of what you call New Jersey’s loveable breakfast meat, neither Taylor ham nor pork roll would be on the culinary map without the egg. We’ve always been reliant on eggs in that way. The consumption of eggs dates back to around 7000 B.C., when people in China and India domesticated chickens. Although other fowl like quail, duck and ostrich produce edible eggs (as do fish and reptiles), the chicken variety is most popular in the U.S. thanks to the animal’s rapid biological cycle and poultry commercialization. It also helps that they’re so versatile and delicious. POWER UP Perhaps no other American diet staple has had as many ups and downs as eggs—and we’re not just talking about the various sunny-side ways to prepare them. For decades, medical publications like the Journal of the American Medical Association have touted the food’s health benefits, and there are plenty in the basket. As Rocky Balboa can attest, eggs are packed with energy-producing and muscle-building components: One whole large chicken egg (about 50 grams) contains 70 calories and provides 6 grams of protein, roughly 12 percent of the recommended daily value (DV). Prefer the jumbo size? Those will boost your protein intake to 8 grams (16 percent DV). Eggs are also a go-to source for vitamins D, B6, B12, biotin—a vitamin that improves hair, skin and nails—as well as the antioxidant selenium. Despite the pros, eggs continue to scramble minds in the medical community. JAMA, the same authority that praised eggs, just last year reported on a study linking high egg consumption with increased risk of heart disease. One whole large egg contains 185 mg of cholesterol (a whopping 62 percent of the DV)—a known contributor to cardiovascular disease. Although the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the Department of Health and Human Services both recommend capping daily cholesterol intake to 300 mg—less than two large eggs—the two federal offices still consider eggs to be

part of a healthy diet. If you’re concerned, opt for egg whites. Removing the yolk drops the calorie count to 17 grams and eliminates all of the cholesterol. BUY/STORE/SERVE Eggs are a grocery-list essential, and there are a variety from which to choose. White and brown eggs are similar in taste and nutrition, so whichever you select is based on personal preference. (The chicken’s breed determines color.) The best eggs are pasteurized from local farms. Chickens at these sites live on an open range and are free of antibiotics, hormones and steroids, and their eggs are typically picked and on the shelves within 48 hours of being laid. Most supermarkets offer farm-fresh (organic) eggs as well as store brands, which use the product of battery-caged hens that are given a formulated feed. To maintain a consistent temperature, eggs should be placed in the main compartment of the refrigerator instead of the door and kept in their carton where they’ll be protected and won’t absorb other odors and flavors. (Bonus: The “Best By” date is stamped on the carton.) Eggs will stay fresher longer when they’re stored large-end up (pointy side down); this prevents the egg’s natural air pocket from rising and keeps the yolk centered. Because of their proteins, eggs are an ideal binding agent and thus are often used to give stability to dishes like meatloaves, baked goods and casseroles. While their culinary applications are innumerable, eggs are incredible on their own—scrambled with home fries for breakfast or poached on a Benedict for brunch, sunny-side up atop a burger for lunch, hard-boiled for a midday snack or mixed with meat and veggies for an easy dinner frittata. Of course, there’s always that New Jersey classic, good-at-anytime sandwich. —Darius Amos

DID YOU KNOW? One of the world’s most daring foods is balut, a hard-boiled fertilized duck egg commonly sold in the Philippines. It boasts about 188 calories and 14 grams of protein but is not for the faint of heart. MSXHEALTHANDLIFE.COM

RESTAURANT REVIEWS:

A Taste of Ireland

Any bartender can pour a pint, but your Irish eyes (and appetites) will smile at these three local pubs.

Thatcher McGhee’s, multiple locations Designed and named after a Middle Age-era thatched roof cottage, Thatcher McGhee’s has the look and feel of a real Irish outpost and kitchen. With locations in Fairfield, Denville and Pompton Lakes, Thatcher’s has become a hot spot for Irish eats year round. Authentic pub grub like a slow-roasted Irish lamb stew and a hand-sliced Reuben (plus the daintier “Rachel” sandwich that swaps in pastrami for the corned beef) are mainstays here. During a night out with friends, I started the evening with two orders of the “Thatch Fries”—a generous helping of crispy matchsticks topped with cheddar cheese, crispy bacon and a drizzle of ranch dressing. Though gluttonous, they were a fun precursor to my lighter main, the Galwaystyle fish and chips, which was perfectly fried and not at all oily. Be prepared for a crowd if you choose to head here on St. Patrick’s Day. The bar offers a limited menu due to the sheer pandemonium of its busiest day of the year, but lots of merriment nonetheless!

Egan & Sons, Montclair Not one to rub elbows at the local bar? Egan & Sons delivers eats with all of the gritty authenticity of an Irish pub paired with an upscale atmosphere. Enjoy refined twists on favorites like a potato-encrusted cottage pie filled with slow-braised beef or wine-soaked steamed mussels over matchstick fries. If you find yourself hungry enough to get an appetizer, order the toasties and trust me, you’ll be happy you did. These little gems are an Irishman’s take on a grilled cheese and packed with a lot of flavor. Stop by the tented parking lot on St. Patrick’s Day for their annual party, no ticket required, where there will be face painting, Irish step dancers, bagpipers and The Counterfeiters (a local cover band) playing all the hits. Tip: The fun is first come, first served, so you’ve got another reason to start your celebration early! Egan & Sons, 118 Walnut St., Montclair, 973.744.1413

Thatcher McGhee’s, 31 Passaic Ave., Fairfield, 973.227.4938; 53 Broadway, Denville, 973.586.3377

Grasshopper Off the Green, Morristown Located in the heart of Morristown, Grasshopper Off the Green is a three-floor authentic pub that knows how to throw a party. With live music every night, the Grasshopper is constantly buzzing with all of the jollities that one looks for in an Irish public house. Stop by for a full meal, or arrive a little later to grab some bar bites and drinks with your clan. On a recent visit, I decided to take on the “Irish Burger”—an angus beef patty topped with bacon (“rashers,” as they would say in Dublin, I learned) and a Guinness-infused cheddar. I was pleasantly surprised at how much of Ireland’s signature brew I tasted in the gooey cheese. I’m not a beer gal, but a dark Guinness is hard to pass up. Other picks at this local hot spot for weekend merriment remain traditional: slow-cooked corned beef and cabbage jeweled with tender red bliss potatoes; hearty bangers and mash; and a potato leek soup with all of the fixings on top. The Grasshopper’s annual festivities are set for March 14, to coincide with Morristown’s historic St. Patrick’s Day parade, so make sure you get your green gear ready early! Stop by for a round of beers with your buds, and you’ll feel lucky to be Irish for the day. Grasshopper Off the Green, 41-43 Morris St., Morristown, 973.285.5150

Though New Jersey is roughly 3,100 miles away from Ireland, there’s no shortage of spirit in our counties once St. Patrick’s Day rolls around. Special bar bites, soda bread and, of course, lots of beer, make for one of the merriest celebrations on the calendar. And call it luck, but our counties have both become home to some of the best spots to raise a pint with your lads and cheers to the greenest get-together of the year. Plan a stop to one or all three of these authentic Irish pubs right in our own backyards that are must-tries for anyone looking to paint the town green. —Gianna Barone

“Having grown up around Brookdale Park in Bloomfield, I was happy to return and enjoy the scenery of the grounds with my girlfriend, Anna. Lying in the grass by the rose garden, we caught the last of the season’s light beaming through the trees as the first leaves of fall began to appear. For us, the moment captures that fleeting beauty that takes place during a transition of seasons.” —Rob Edmond, Jersey City
