GLORY DAYS Bathing suits, bugs and BBQs are some things that come to mind when you think about summer. But I’m sure you’ll agree it also invites us to “get out”—not only outdoors, to enjoy the warm weather and long days, but also out of our comfort zones to try something new. For example, what about kayaking (see page 17) or running instead of exercising indoors (see page 53), or perhaps camping under the stars? For me, growing up in the Midwest, summer meant camping. Every weekend my family and I would head to the lake—just as we all head to the Shore in New Jersey. It was like living off the grid! No cars, phones, electricity, running water or any of the other comforts we take for granted—absolutely liberating! So in the spirit of summer and that irreverent, youthful impulse we all feel in different ways, we’ve devoted this issue to many of the wonderful things about this season in our state—like renowned Jersey tomatoes (page 54) that are ripe for the pickin’. You’ll find the perfect beach bag (page 22), seaworthy baubles (page 24), chic poolside and patio furniture (page 28), and much more! In our feature article on alfresco dining (page 56), New Jersey caterer extraordinaire Laurence Craig invites us to his Califon farm for a garden-fresh party—here you’ll find lots of decorating ideas and, best of all, exclusive recipes so you can host your own soiree before the summer breezes by. Enjoy!

Here’s a summer idea: Why not enjoy the great outdoors by going kayaking? And while paddling your way alongside the scenic banks of the state’s pristine parks, take note of the unexpected workout you’re receiving: The water sport, similar to canoeing, is a bona fide calorie buster (it burns 300 to 500 an hour, depending on water conditions and your speed and body weight), provides low-impact upper-body conditioning (requiring about 500 paddle strokes per mile) and is an ecofriendly way to sightsee and explore.

Choose your own adventure: Here are several places in and around our state to embark. Romantic outing Monksville Reservoir in Ringwood. Day trip Hudson River at Memorial Park in Nyack, N.Y.; Long Island Sound off the Thimble Islands in Branford, Conn. Sightseeing Hudson River at Liberty State Park, where you can spot the Statue of Liberty and the Manhattan skyline (The park’s Nature Interpretive Center offers kayaking eco-tours. Call 201.915.3409 for details.) White-water experience The Delaware River at various points: Travel north to Kittatinny Canoes in Barryville, N.Y., (kittatinny.com) or south to Paddle Creek in Frenchtown (paddlecreekfrenchtown.com). For the kids Sunrise Lake in Lewis Morris County Park rents Wibit kayaks (inflatable boats designed for children) for $5 per 30 minutes.

in many U.s. classrooms, children are busy learning their as, Bs, cs—and asanas. Yoga for children has become increasingly popular as kids as young as preschool age have become more stressed. “Yoga is a great way for kids to learn to calm down, breathe and focus while having fun in a noncompetitive way,” says allison morgan, an occupational therapist and an instructor for radiant Child Yoga, which certifies teachers of children’s yoga throughout the state. the practice also helps kids gain muscle strength and body awareness, and studies have shown it can even help children with special needs to communicate better. Yoga poses are often modeled after things kids are familiar with, such as animals or their natural environment. RcY instructors also teach children songs that express positive messages to the tune of popular nursery rhymes. “so instead of singing ‘i’m sexy and i know it,’ which they hear on the radio, the kids can sing, ‘i am brave, i am bold, my own spirit i can hold,’” morgan says, adding that most children already have a positive attitude that just needs nurturing: “Kids are just big souls in little bodies.”

moms know how hard it is to find a sitter last-minute when something comes up. and so does Zina Phillips, who is striving to make things easier on montclair-area moms with the new Le parc place preschool & Children’s enrichment Center (973.744.6073, leparcplace.com) in Upper montclair. drop off your little one and one of the center’s la nannies will take care of him or her one-on-one in a colorful, warm environment featuring a play house and puppet station, dress-up costumes, a play kitchen, a ball pit, a tabletop fire station, a slide and more. the fee is $15 per hour for one or two children, plus a monthly, weekly or daily membership fee. the play space is also open for parents or caregivers to visit with their kids, a great option for when school is closed and the toys in the basement are no longer cutting it (a one-day pass is $15, and weekly or monthly memberships are available). the center also offers classes for kids (including foreign languages, art and photography) and plans to open a preschool in september for infants and children up to age 5.

We all know berries are good for us. they’re full of antioxidants, which neutralize harmful free radicals in our bodies’ cells. Research suggests this can slow the aging process and ward off serious disease. skin-care companies and spas have become hip to the fruit’s benefit and have begun offering more products and services featuring berries of all kinds. one local place, sulis (973.667.3100, sulisspa. com), the spa upstairs at melandre salon in nutley, offers a pomegranate-cranberry scrub that i decided to put to the test. the modern spa is located on the second floor of an old home (built in 1919) that was completely refurbished in 2010. i enjoyed tea and some trail mix in a serene, blue-lit waiting area before my therapist collected me and led me into another dimly lit room (this one with a red glow). i lay on my back on the table as she massaged the sweet-smelling scrub into my skin, exfoliating away my dry, dead skin cells. she then used a warm cloth to rinse most of it off, instructing me to shower in the changing room and return to her. after i did so, she massaged a moisturizing cream into my skin, leaving it remarkably smooth. i’m not sure i looked any younger, but my skin definitely felt baby-soft. —marisa sandora

Big news for mountainside Hospital. in July, the 121-year-old hospital on the Glen Ridge-montclair border was bought by hackensack University medical center and lhP hospital Group inc., a company based in texas. the hospital will now be called HackensackumC mountainside. (the partners also bought the former Pascack Valley hospital in Westwood and plan to reopen that facility in the spring.) hospital executives said there will be no changes in services or staffing at the 365bed facility as a result of the acquisition.
already a destination for foodies, montclair has welcomed five interesting new restaurants just this year: 1 for classic american comfort food washed down with a strong cappuccino, check out red Eye Café at 94 Walnut st. (973.509.food, drinkredeyes. com), which has already drawn the attention of junk food fanatics for its fat elvis sandwich (banana, peanut butter, honey and bacon). 2 a vegan and a carnivore walked into a restaurant—and that place was Le salbuen at 97 Walnut st. (201.622.8473), which offers locally sourced contemporary american dishes that will satisfy plant eaters, meat lovers and everyone in between. 3 Whether you’re looking for a high-protein smoothie, a low-carb wrap or a healthier burger, muscle maker grill, which recently opened at 10 Park st. (973.746.4444, musclemakergrill.com), has something for you on its calorie-conscious menu. 4 traditional Korean food is a combination of vegetables and meat served in side dishes (called banchan) alongside shortgrain rice. explore it for yourself at Koreander Fusion Café at 128 Watchung ave. (973.509.7800, koreandercafe.com). 5 if tony soprano were still making his rounds in montclair, he might trade in his “gabagool” for the tasty italian fare served at Tuscany at 622 Valley Rd. in Upper montclair (973.744.0200), which offers traditional dishes with homemade pastas and sauces.
room for one less
sometimes when a woman finally gets a room of her own, she just doesn’t know what to do with it. that’s where Jodi topitz of the morristown-based company We2me (973.985.4386, we2me.com) comes in. topitz is an interior designer specializing in helping women (and men) who are coping with a divorce or the loss of a spouse to redecorate. “When you’re going through a difficult time, it’s really important that your home is like a sanctuary—a place where you can unwind and rejuvenate,” says topitz. Whether they’re looking to renovate a current space that was previously shared with a spouse or start fresh in a new home, clients can rely on topitz for suggestions on color, layout and affordable décor and accessories. she also offers advice on downsizing and repurposing furniture through reupholstering or painting. “When looking for ‘new’ furniture, i shop the client’s house first— clients are often convinced they have nothing, and that’s never true,” she says. to keep to a reasonable budget, topitz frequents garage sales, antique stores and discount furniture places like home Goods to find tasteful pieces that reflect the client’s personality. her rates range from $500 for a two-hour consultation/ assessment to $2,000 for 10 hours of interior design services.

To some of us, wine-making evokes images of a barefoot Lucille Ball romping around a tub of grapes in a classic I Love Lucy episode. But the process is much more civilized than that at Vintner’s Circle in Whippany (973.585.4719, vintnerscircle.com). Here, wine lovers can personalize their passion

and develop their palate by crafting and bottling their own brew. Customers may pick one of 80 varieties of wine to create during four sessions (30–45 minutes each) over seven weeks. The cost starts at about $279, which yields 28 bottles of wine. After the wine is bottled, winemakers can customize it with the company’s personalized labeling service—a standard white sticker with the wine name, description and bottling date is included in the wine-making price, and more decorative designs range from $19.99 to $39.99 for 30 labels.

SUMMER SOUP Those who attended our Best of Morris/Essex Party & Expo last spring may remember this deliciously refreshing soup, served by Mitchell Altholz, executive chef of the Highlawn Pavilion in West Orange. We loved it so much that we asked Altholz to share the recipe with our readers (see above).
TOYS GO GREEN
When lifelong New Jerseyan Rich Holden went shopping for presents for his grandson, he found options too few, prices too high and available advice negligible. So Holden and his wife, Carole, took matters into their own hands and opened Childsplayspot (973.376.6634, childsplayspot.com) an online company that has since set up shop in the Mall at Short Hills. The Holdens wanted to sell safe, educational toys of the kind they might give to their own grandchildren, with a focus on eco-friendly. Like, for instance, the vegetable-dyed play dough they ship in from Vermont. “It is important to give back to the ecology of the Earth, so when we can, we stock products made from renewable, recycled or repurposed resources,” says Holden. But above all, his operation prides itself on customer service. “Come in, and my staff will help you find something that’s age-appropriate, eco-friendly, locally made or even autistic-friendly,” he says.

aren’t custom-made shirts very expensive? mitch: that’s a misconception. you can buy some for $130 to $145 each, though it’s true that others made from costlier fabrics can run you $500 to $600. But think about it: you spend $50 to $60 on a foreign-made shirt, then maybe another $30 to have a tailor sew darts in it to narrow the waist—and you still may look as if a parachute is hanging over your pants. how long does it generally take to get a custom-made shirt? mel: two to three weeks. We can also provide accessories such as cuff links and pocket squares. how did your company get started? mel: in the early 1900s, shirtmakers were almost as common as tailors—every city had

at least one or two. My father, Joseph J. Gambert, began making custom shirts in newark in 1933. in 1958, he bought the Martin freedman company, which had as clients 150 retail shops around the country selling made-to-measure shirts. i was in college and learning the business. after a while i made some changes. like what? mel: in those days, “made-tomeasure” meant that the customer chose a collar and cuff style and you took a basic shell for a certain body type and tweaked it according to neck size and sleeve length. that was it. i added tapering and new measurements for shoulder slope, yoke sizing [the yoke is the fabric section on the upper back] and adjustment for posture, and we educated our dealers about how these other variations could improve a fit. of course, “made-tomeasure” and “custom” are still different. how so? mitch: Made-to-measure uses a base pattern and tweaks it. it’s fine for 90 percent of customers, and you can get these shirts from any of our 200+ dealers nationwide. But clients who come into our newark factory can get a true custom-made shirt, based on 10 to 15 body measurements. We offer both services.
to quote a longtime customer of ours, “if you come to a fork in the road, take it.” you know yogi Berra? mel: he started coming here with Joe diMaggio and other yankees when the old Ballantine brewery hosted parties. We’ve also made shirts for film director Quentin tarantino, stars of tV’s Boardwalk Empire and the 2007 new york Giants super Bowl team. those are some names—now tell me some

what has it Been like to work for a family company? mel: My father was difficult to work for, very demanding about quality. his shirts were his pride, and i guess a lot of that rubbed off on me. mitch: i find my father easy to work with. you say you’re a large, or maybe a 15½ neck with a 34 sleeve? that’ll draw wry smiles from the proprietors of Mel Gambert custom shirts, whose idea of a fit is a bit more complex. they craft shoulder-to-waist attire for folks who—in that one part of life—just won’t compromise. and they do it in an unexpected fashion capital: not Milan, paris or new york, but newark. We chatted recently with Mel Gambert, 73, manager; and his son, Mitch, 39, sales manager:

Madison Montessori School is a nonprofit preschool established in 1981 for children ages two and-a-half-years through six years with a full-day kindergarten. We follow the philosophy of Maria Montessori, recognizing that children develop and learn at different rates and that an enriched environment benefits the developing brain. Our use of the Montessori materials in Language, Geography, Mathematics, Sensorial and Practical Life is complemented by instruction in Music, Science, Creative Movement, Cooking, Drama and Yoga. PRESENTING THE BEST INDEPENDENTLY OWNED HEALTH AND BEAUT Y SHOPS, FARMERS’ MARKETS AND FOOD CO-OPS IN MORRIS AND ESSE X COUNTIES BY LESLIE GARISTO PFAFF
HERE’S A BEAUTY SECRET: WHEN IT COMES TO creating a better you, there’s no reason to venture beyond downtown. That’s because the local businesses we highlight on the next few pages offer the kind of warmth and hospitality you’re unlikely to encounter at a national chain, with products and services tailored to a discerning local clientele. We searched Morris and Essex counties to bring you dozens of

the best health and beauty shops and healthy-food markets, and nary a one entails a trip to the mall. Remember that independently owned local businesses return 45 percent of each dollar you spend back into the community, while national chains may only contribute 20 percent of the same buck. That makes shopping locally a good deed as well as a pleasure. So go and get yourself happy, healthy and gorgeous—but don’t go too far.

“look for a broad-spectrum sunscreen— one that protects from both UVa and UVB sun rays,” says cedar Grove–based dermatologist ellen cunningham, m.d., who suggests applying about one ounce of lotion every two hours. “the sunscreen that you should choose depends on your lifestyle and sometimes on your skin health. for someone with a more athletic lifestyle, i recommend using a water-resistant product. if acne or oily skin is an issue, the gel and spray sunscreens might be a better choice.” the american academy of dermatology recommends using a sunscreen with a sun protection factor (sPf) rating of 30 or higher.

CELLULITE, BEGONE! A NEW L ASER TRE ATMENT PROMISES TO Z AP AWAY SKIN DIMPLING. HERE’S HOW IT COMPARES WITH OTHER THERAPIES BY DEBORAH PIKE OLSEN
thighs and buttocks—has long been a pipe dream for doctors and women alike. Over the years, everything from creams to massagers to injections has been touted as a possible cure, but none has offered lasting results. Now, for the first time, there’s an effective, long-lasting treatment. It’s called Cellulaze, and it was approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) last January. “There’s been no long-term single treatment for cellulite, ever,” says Barry DiBernardo, M.D., director of New Jersey Plastic Surgery in Montclair and clinical associate professor of surgery in the Division of Plastic Surgery at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey. “All the other treatments to date have been temporary. Women who wouldn’t put on shorts now have help.” About 88 million women have cellulite—fat that’s located in pockets just beneath the skin. The condition primarily affects women because the anatomy of their skin is different from men’s. In women, the fibrous bands that hold fat cells are vertical, whereas in men, fat is stored in a diamond pattern, says Dr. DiBernardo. Cellulite forms when fibers that connect fat to the skin stretch, break down or pull tight, allowing the fat cells to bulge. That leads to a dimpled appearance. Treatments, including Cellulaze, promise to smooth out those bulges. Morris/Essex Health & Life asked experts to evaluate Cellulaze and other commonly used cellulite treatments:

BANISHING CELLULITE—THAT DIMPLED SKIN THAT TENDS TO SHOW UP ON WOMEN’S HIPS,
7/31/12 12:55 PM
Cellulaze
How it works A small tube (the size of the tip of a pen) containing a laser fiber is inserted underneath the skin. Light energy is delivered just under the skin, increasing its thickness while releasing the bands that pull it down. The laser also reduces the pockets of fat that protrude through the fibrous bands under your skin. Studies show that the treatment increases your skin’s thickness by 25 percent and its elasticity by 29 percent. According to the manufacturer, the procedure is ideal for women who aren’t significantly overweight but have mild to moderate cellulite on their thighs. Pros The results last for up to three years, according to a study of 10 women published in the Aesthetic Surgery Journal. Also, only one treatment is necessary. “This is the culmination of years of work,” says Dr. DiBernardo. “I’m getting calls from all over the country from people who’ve tried everything.” Cons It’s expensive, plus it’s a new procedure, so it will take time to determine its potential side effects. “It looks intriguing, but I’m waiting to see if it offers more than VelaShape [a less-invasive procedure], which I use in my practice,” says Janet Neigel, M.D., owner of the Neigel Center for Cosmetic and Laser Surgery in West Orange. Also, although it’s considered minimally invasive, you’ll receive local anesthesia, and some recovery time is involved. You’ll need to wear a compression garment for two to three weeks afterward to prevent fluid buildup. Plus, you’ll have to be patient because it can take two to three months before you see the results. Cost Ranges from $5,000 to $7,000*, depending on the size of the area to be treated
“women who wouldn’t put on ShortS now have help.” —Barry diBernardo, m.d.

How it works A laser causes the pores in fat cells to open and release fat. As a result, the cells shrink. A mechanical roller and vacuum suction help the unwanted fat “drain.” Researchers will soon begin a study in which they combine Cellulaze and SmoothShapes to see if the results are better than Cellulaze alone—and if healing might occur more quickly. “There could be synergistic results,” says Dr. DiBernardo. Pros You won’t need as many treatments as with the other noninvasive cellulite procedures. Plus, it produces longer-lasting results. The manufacturer claims the procedure feels like a deep-tissue massage. Although you may notice that the treated area is red for a few hours after the procedure, there’s no recovery time. “This is the most effective noninvasive, temporary treatment,” says Dr. DiBernardo. Cons The results are temporary, and the procedure is costly. Also, you’ll need to be patient, since your skin will continue to improve for up to six months after your last treatment. Cost $350 per treatment (you’ll need eight treatments, twice a week for four weeks)
endermologie
How it works This low-tech treatment uses mechanical rollers and vacuum suction to massage away cellulite. The procedure stretches out the fibrous tissue underneath the skin and squeezes fluid from fat cells to achieve a smooth look. Pros It’s relatively inexpensive, and it’s painless. Cons It’s temporary. You’ll need 10 to 20 treatments (once a week), then monthly maintenance. Cost $150 per treatment

A wArning About cellulite injections some aesthetic medicine specialists claim that injections of drugs, vitamins, minerals or herbal extracts can chemically dissolve fat, improving cellulite. but the procedures—known as mesotherapy and lipodissolve—don’t work well because they can cause an uneven reduction of fat, says H. william song, M.D., owner of omni Aesthetics in oakland. worse, “you don’t know what you’re getting,” says Dr. song. “they’re not FDA-approved procedures.” in fact, in 2010 the FDA issued warning letters to six u.s. medical spas and a company in brazil for making false or misleading statements on their websites about lipodissolve products. Plus, the FDA has received reports of permanent scarring, skin deformities and deep, painful knots under the skin in the areas where the lipodissolve products were injected.
Questions to Ask your Doctor
VelaShape II
How it works it uses the roller and suction technology from endermologie and adds radiofrequency (rF) to heat fat cells and shrink them. A recent study found that after five sessions, there was an up to 60 percent overall improvement in skin texture. Pros it’s noninvasive, so there’s less discomfort. (the manufacturer claims the treatments feel like a deep-tissue massage.) Although your skin may appear flushed and warm for several hours after the treatment, you can resume your normal activities immediately. “it’s great for treating problem areas that you can’t get rid of at the gym or through dieting, such as love handles and saddlebags (the sides of thighs),” says Dr. neigel. Cons the results don’t last long. “even after you’re pleased with the results, you’ll need maintenance treatments,” says Dr. neigel. Also, although the procedure is FDA-approved and considered safe, some doctors are concerned about patients’ exposure to rF. Cost $200 per treatment (three to 10 are typically needed, then maintenance treatments once every six months, says Dr. neigel)

before you undergo cellulaze treatment, ask your physician: Are you a board-certified surgeon? Have you performed related procedures like liposuction? (cellulaze is more difficult to perform than liposuction, say doctors.) How many cellulaze procedures have you done? Are your patients happy with the results? May i speak with them and see their beforeand-after photos? next year, when the machine has been out longer, ask: How many of your patients have been re-treated?

Swimming, cycling or upper-body strengthening can provide the benefits of cardiovascular training while the running muscles and joints are recovering, so they are great to do on rest days. Runners with upper-body strength can use their arms to gain a more powerful “kick” (or closing speed) at the end of long-distance races. Ripe Red As luscious As it is legendAry, the Jersey tomAto is pAcked with powerful nutrients
Can new Jersey claim the tomato? in truth, it originated in South America and is grown in greatest quantity in China, with California the top-producing u.S. state. But connoisseurs of the Jersey tomato think of this plump red fruit (considered a vegetable in culinary terms, and known to scientists as Solanum lycopersicum) as their own. This is, after all, the state where Rutgers university released its namesake hybrid tomato in 1934 and where the Campbell Soup Company used that flavorful food over succeeding decades to make oceans of soup. Today Campbell’s has switched to a less expensive (and, some say, less flavorful) west Coast variety, but there are still a number of farms growing celebrated varieties of Jersey’s best, and Rutgers has a program in place to bring hybrid species created here back to the market.
PoweRS Studies touting the health benefits of tomatoes are numerous, and their ranks are growing. The fruit is well known for its role in supporting heart health—lycopene, an antioxidant, can help prevent blockages and improve the regulation of fats in the bloodstream, decreasing cholesterol and triglycerides levels. Some research also indicates that lycopene may promote bone health and help prevent cancer. Tomatoes
are also rich in phytonutrients linked to heart health and are chock-full of vitamins C and e, beta-carotene and manganese.

financial balance
10 t i ps fo r bu y i ng w h at you r k i ds n eed w i t h ou t b r e a k i ng t h e ba n k moms and dads across america spent nearly $70 Billion—that’s billion—on their children’s school supplies last fall, according to estimates from the national retail foundation. the average tab for a k-12 kid: $600-plus. so what do you do af ter you’ve already sif ted through your kids’ clothes for keepers and hand-me-downs, organized a supply swap with your neighbors and scoured junk drawers for per fectly good pencils, rulers and the like? use this intel to score the stuf f your kids still need for a whole lot less!
Give kids a say. they want to wear a new outfit on their first day, and that’s ok. But limit them to two or three items. since it’s still warm out when school starts, steer them to the sales racks of summer clothes. if they need a bigger wardrobe boost, wait at least two weeks after school starts, says nelson, who’s a mom of two boys. “By then, they’ll know what they want to wear, and

those clothes will already have been marked down.” another tip: consider carrying envelopes with all the moolah you budgeted for each child in cash. when the bills are depleted, shopping is done—a concept the kids will grasp easily.
find deals nearBy. want to know what deals are on tap at stores near you—without spending precious minutes scouring paper ads, making calls or even surfing the web? check out salescircular.com and saleslocator.com. the sites list all the sales in your area in one place.
score rock-Bottom prices. done scrounging around the house for school supplies like folders, binders and paper? try classroom direct.com—an online clearinghouse that boasts some of the cheapest prices around, says nelson. Best of all? free shipping on any order!
morris/essex he alth & life

visit the mall weBsites. you might find coupons you can print out or special promotions that will help you save 30 to 40 percent off your bottom line, says nelson, who’s a mother of two boys. example: Go to shopshorthills. com and click on “sales & offers.” while you’re at it, visit websites of individual stores (like kohl’s, lord & taylor, etc.) and type “coupons” into the search box. also, don’t forget about outlet malls. sure, you know you can pick up that $5 coupon booklet at the information kiosk once you get there, but nelson says you can get that booklet free by signing up on the outlet’s website: “you can just go pick it up when you arrive.”
take advantaGe of the competition. “walmart and target are competing at backto-school time,” says nelson. that means they each have stationery items—notebooks, pens, folders—that are
loss leaders (items sold at a loss just to lure consumers into the store). nelson’s strategy? she scours their ads for the deeply discounted items, and because walmart and target will pricematch, she heads to one of the retailers to get the lowest prices on whatever she needs for the whole year—often at 80 to 90 percent off! that means you could possibly get everything at one store instead of doing a parking-lot crawl.
BaG freeBies at office-supply stores. here’s how it works: sign up for a loyalty program at a store such as office depot or staples. for every purchase you make, you will earn reward points. then once a quarter you’ll get a gift card in the mail for what you’ve accumulated. “that’s how i stock my business with supplies,” says nelson. “i get free binders and free pens! and at backto-school time there are lots of deals.”
turn hand-me-downs into must-haves. capitalize on kids’ desire to be older. show them a photo of their big brother or sister wearing the same outfit they’re about to get. suddenly that plaid hoodie will seem really cool.
know when to invest. when kids are little, $5 backpacks are fine, says nelson. But as they hit high school, a new strategy is in order: “rather than buying cheap backpacks each year, invest in something better-quality,” she says. “my son has had the same l.l. Bean backpack for five years. Get it with free shipping and a coupon code—and it has a lifetime guarantee!”
Get the lowest price on the Go. have a smartphone? check out redlaser, shopsavvy and pushpins, apps that enable you to scan or photograph items for instant price comparisons. —Maria LissandreLLo

make social media work for you. whatever your retailers of choice—old navy, target, striderite—like ’em on facebook and follow ’em on twitter to get coupons and discounts. and sign up for their e-newsletters too, advises stephanie nelson, a.k.a. coupon mom (couponmom.com), whose blog boasts 6 million followers. don’t forget to follow the practice with shoe brands like new Balance, she adds: “you may get an e-mail coupon for $5 to $15 off a pair!”

college PreP:
Five Reasons to study up on 529 PlAns Millions of faMilies striving to Meet the Mounting costs of college have flocked to 529 college savings plans. For most investors, the plans’ main attractions are the potential for federal tax-deferred earnings growth and federal tax-free qualified withdrawals.1 The plans’ aggregate asset limits, which often exceed $200,000, also appeal to contributors concerned about the potential for a six-figure price tag on a four-year degree. But a closer look at the rules governing 529 plans may reveal other attractive reasons to consider putting them to work as you make one of your most important investments—in your child’s or grandchild’s future.
1
Avoid federAl gift tAxes And AccelerAte giving
You can contribute up to $13,000 (or $26,000 if you and your spouse give and file jointly) to a 529 plan each year without owing federal gift taxes, provided you haven’t made other financial gifts to the plan beneficiary in the same year. In addition, you can elect to make a lump-sum contribution of up to $65,000 ($130,000 for married couples filing jointly) in the first year of a five-year period, provided you don’t give the beneficiary additional taxable gifts during the five-year period.2
2
creAte An educAtionAl funding legAcy
A 529 plan offers the owner control over the plan, including flexibility in naming and changing its beneficiary. The beneficiary can be any age and generally can be changed to a qualified relative when needed. For example, if the original beneficiary decides not to attend college, you can designate a new beneficiary. This flexibility may enable you to establish a college funding legacy for current and future
generations. For example, you could open a 529 plan account to pay your child’s college bills. Then, if there’s money left over after he or she finishes college, you can change the beneficiary to another qualified family member and perhaps later to a grandchild.
3
consolidAte Assets
Consolidating college funding assets for one beneficiary in a single 529 plan can make them easier to manage. Depending on plan rules, you may be able to arrange transfers from a Coverdell Education Savings Account, a custodial account or another 529 plan without triggering federal income taxes. Be sure to review the tax implications with a tax professional, however. Transfers of assets from Series EE and I bonds may also be allowed under certain conditions.

look into stAte tAx sAvings
Money in a 529 account is usually considered by colleges to be the account owner’s asset, which often means the parents’ asset. As a result, a maximum of 5.6% of the balance is generally assumed to be available for college annually, compared with 35% if the assets were the student’s. With a custodial account, on the other hand, the assets are considered the student’s. And according to the Department of Education, qualified distributions from a 529 plan are not counted as parent or student income and therefore do not affect aid eligibility.
Depending on the state you reside in, plan contributions to that state’s 529 plan may be eligible for state tax deductions. Don’t overlook this potential benefit when choosing a plan. There may be other advantages of 529 plans to consider, as well. Be sure to talk with your financial advisor and tax professional for help assessing how a 529 plan may affect your tax situation.

The earnings portion of nonqualified withdrawals is subject to federal income taxes, a 10% federal tax penalty and possible state taxes and penalties. If you die before the end of the five-year period, a prorated portion of the contribution will be considered part of your taxable estate. Section 529 plans are established and maintained by state governments or agencies or eligible educational institutions. Contributions must be kept in a qualified trust in order to be treated as a qualified tuition program. You should consider a 529 Plan’s fees and expenses such as administrative fees, enrollment fees, annual maintenance fees, sales charges, and underlying fund expenses, which will fluctuate depending on the 529 Plan invested in the investments chosen within the plan.

VITAL STATS
WESTFIELD, N.J. NEW JERSEY IS HOME TO 25 MAIN
Street communities (designated by the National Trust for Historic Preservation), but Westfield in Union County is the only one that’s won the Great American Main Street Award (in 2004). Selected by a jury of community development experts, winners must have created economic vitality and a unique sense of place, serving as a model for downtowns nationwide. And indeed, downtown Westfield—with almost 500 stores, professional services and restaurants—has something to suit every taste. Westfield was originally known as the West Fields of Elizabethtown of Elizabeth Township, and the first known settlement there dates to 1720, 100 years after the Pilgrims landed on Plymouth Rock. The area was once the home of the Leni Lenape Indians, and their heritage is remembered in the names of town locations such as Lenape Trail, Manitou Circle and Mindowaskin and Tamaques parks. Noted for its beautiful homes, broad, tree-lined streets and exceptional schools, Westfield is widely considered one of New Jersey’s best places to live.

Find the perfect solution at Hidden Pond, an upscale resort featuring luxurious cottages and bungalows tucked away in the woods about 10 minutes from downtown Kennebunkport, Maine. stepping into one of the 16 two-bedroom cottages is both a surprise and a delight, as each of the 1,100-square-foot buildings is uniquely decorated. The Periwinkle cottage, for example, mixes bright colors like red, yellow and, of course, periwinkle with natural materials to achieve an upbeat, whimsical feel. A cottage is a perfect choice for a family getaway, with two bedrooms, two bathrooms and a kitchen, plus a screened-in porch and outdoor shower. But last year, Hidden Pond added 20 two-person bungalows to the 60-acre property to attract couples, placing these bungalows in another section of the resort along with an adults-only pool. The 700-square-foot bungalows, decorated

in soft earth tones with rustic touches of wood and stone, offer a quiet retreat for those looking to get away sans kids. Also new last year was Earth, a gardeninspired restaurant helmed by star Boston chef Ken oringer. The restaurant, which overlooks the pond that inspired the resort’s name, features homegrown organic vegetables and herbs with fresh local seafood and meat. Another welcome addition is the Tree spa. The spa’s treatment rooms are individual wooden “sheds” built 10 feet off the ground and accessed by wooden footbridges. You are perched among the birch and balsam fir trees as you enjoy your treatment, which features organic Farmaesthetics products. The main gathering place at the resort is the Arts and Crafts–inspired Lodge, which houses the check-in desk, a lounge area with a large stone fireplace and the Back Porch Bar. outside the Lodge is a fire pit
surrounded by wooden benches, tables and chairs. Grab a seat by the nightly bonfire and enjoy a cocktail or complimentary s’mores. The staff will happily provide you with a stick perfect for roasting your marshmallows under the stars. In the morning, a basket of freshly baked muffins and bread appears in a bag hanging outside your door along with hot coffee and a newspaper. Enjoy breakfast on your screened-in porch or snuggled on the couch in front of your stone fireplace, then try a 9 a.m. yoga or tai chi class on the lawn by the organic garden, or grab a bike from Pete’s bike shed on the property and take a one-mile ride over to the beach at Goose Rocks. Hidden Pond guests have access to the beach at The Tides Beach Club, a recently renovated 113-year-old Victorian inn, which is a sister property. Both hotels are a short drive from the picturesque coastal village of Kennebunkport with its myriad shops, restaurants and whale-watching excursions. After a day spent as a tourist in town, it’s a treat to retire to the quiet of the woods at Hidden Pond. —Marisa sandora
