Fine Art Gallery & Interior Design Services
Established in 1996, the James Yarosh Associates Fine Art Gallery was founded upon and remains loyal to its vision: to represent fine art for art’s sake and to curate gallery collections and thoughtfully present art and interior design specification with an artist’s eye and understanding. Yarosh, an artist and well-published interior designer, offers a full-scale gallery and design center. Yarosh travels the world, studying how the greatest museums display their art, and visits artists’ homes to understand how the artists themselves live with their art. This study on both grand and small scale helps inform Yarosh’s work with his clients. Yarosh’s trademark ability is integrating art and design, resulting in visual excitement while allowing both disciplines to still stand on their own merits.
Yarosh represents a variety of artistic voices of our times by showcasing the works of both new and established, museum-recognized artists of excellence in a space designed to replicate the intimacy of an artist’s home.
“Yarosh, like many great interior designers, is part illusionist and part alchemist. The maximalists Tony Duquette and Juan Pablo Moyneux come to mind. I consider Yarosh a curated maximalist. His trained eye knows which stylish periods marry well together - such as Directoire and Art Moderne - and that they do not compete with the art being exhibited.”

time for family (and you)!
A
nother autumn is now underway, and if you’re like me, you’re silently pleading with the powers-that-be to protect our homes from the ravages of nor’easters, tropical storm what’sher-name and other meteorological disasters. But once I’ve convinced myself that I’ve done everything possible to secure my home, I stop worrying (Mother Nature will have her way anyway) and ponder more pleasurable coldweather pursuits: sipping hot cider by the fire, making batches of soups for my family and inviting friends over for a fall feast. As you’ll see from our cover, we’ve featured a dining room, one that’s intimate and clublike and fosters togetherness. (See the whole house in “Westfield, Meet West Coast” on page 86.) And when I think about what ties all the beautiful spaces in this issue together, it’s homes that inspire everyone to gather round to
enjoy each other’s company. All of the rooms are amenity-filled and reflect a range of styles, plus they’re designed for comfort, of course. And it’s no surprise that open floor plans continue to be popular because they make rooms appear more spacious, encourage flow and inspire togetherness. But there’s also something to be said for not having to design for an endless expanse of space and for being able to sneak away to be alone. Don’t get me wrong. I love a setup where folks can be prepping a meal while chatting with friends nearby in the family room. But I’m also all for secluding myself away from activity to read a few chapters of a great new book, play a round of Words with Friends or make a past-due phone call. Yes, I want it both ways. And so should you. That’s why I adore the master bedroom that Maria K. Bevill created for a showhouse in Morristown. With décor inspired by Greek shores and an intimate space for lounging, the room is meant to inspire “comfort and relaxation”—ideal conditions in which to escape from daily realities. Turn to “Morristown on the Aegean” on page 68 to see the results and read about Bevill’s project. There’s no better place to seek seclusion than in a soaking bathtub, and that’s exactly what a single dad got when he revamped his Franklin Lakes bathroom. Designer Danielle Palmadessa equipped the room with a modern shower complete with oversized rain shower head, dual vanities and a mix of glass and marble tiles. But that tub is the showstopper, the perfect getaway and place for privacy. Check out the indoor oasis in “Delighting Dad” on page 74. While solitude provides me with some peace and comfort, I believe a beautiful home should be shared with family and friends. This issue of NJ Home has plenty of stories and design ideas that uphold the idea of togetherness. I hope you and your houseguests enjoy all of them.

THE LATEST REPORTS ON THE DESIGN OF HOMES AND THEIR INTERIORS AND FURNISHINGS.
GUSTLIN IS HUSTLIN’
TILE STYLE
An impressive collection of fine and contemporary art awaits you just over the Gov. Mario M. Cuomo Bridge. The famed Canfin Gallery in Tarrytown, N.Y., is dedicating an exhibit this fall to the “New Works” of San Franciscobased artist Jylian Gustlin. Gustlin is known for her colorful, mixedmedia paintings of geometric shapes and figures, which almost pop off the canvas with a multidimensional fluidity. The exhibit runs Oct. 12–Nov. 10, 2019. • Canfin Gallery, 39 Main St., Tarrytown, N.Y., 914.332.4554
Much like a portrait or a sculpture, tiles can tell a story and add an artistic dimension to a room. And that’s certainly true for Much Love Me, the debut tile collaboration between artisan tile brand Clé and South African artist Ruan Hoffmann. This collection features hand-drawn designs such as flowers and shapes on each 12x12 tile, and they’re interchangeable to fit any space. They also come in two neutral colors: charcoal and Delft blue. Visit cletile.com.

These new cups are perfect for a coffee break with the girls. The new illy Art Collection’s espresso and cappuccino cups and saucers are designed by Italian artist Olimpia Zagnoli, and inspired by and dedicated to women. Each of the six cups features an illustration of a different gal, with her own point of view and story to tell over coffee and a pastry. No matter which of these six “sisters” you identify with most, they’ll all be a hit.

WHEN FOOD MEETS FUNCTION
Finally, the perfect way to combine your love for carbs with your passion for home design. Enter the “Pampshade,” a light for your home made out of real, hollowed-out bread. The innovative light source is the brainchild of Japanese baker-turned-artist Yukiko Morita. She hated seeing so many loaves go to waste, so in a lightbulb moment, she found a new use for her hand-baked croissants and baguettes. But don’t worry— these breads won’t go stale. Morita first coats them in resin, then removes the insides and finally sticks LED lights and batteries inside. Thus the Pampshade was created, and it comes in different shapes and sizes—there’s even a clock made out of naan. The Pampshade was on exhibit in August at Shoppe Object, an art show in New York City; you can order your own one-of-a-kind, made-in-Japan Pampshade online at pampshade.com. Dare we say this may be the greatest thing since sliced bread?
BATHE IN WOOD
16
| NJHome
We’re not about to tell you that crisp white bathrooms are out of style, but knock on wood, the wooden bathrooms of yesteryear are making a comeback as we round out 2019. There are a few notable benefits to having a wooden tub in your bathroom rather than a ceramic one, aside from just going against the grain. Aesthetically, the woodsy look adds luxurious texture and color to a typically sterile bathroom, and wood nicely complements industrial, farmhouse or vintage styles. As far as comfort is concerned, wooden tubs are typically deeper than other tubs. Plus, wood retains heat longer than ceramic does, so it’s the obvious choice when you want to soak and unwind in a warm bath after a long day. Finally, you get your money’s worth with a wooden tub, as they’re built to last. Visit your local kitchen and bath store or The Home Depot to see if a wooden tub is the right fit for your lifestyle and space. (Many stores will customize these tubs to your tastes and specifications.) Then bask in that well-deserved relaxation.

A GLOBAL TREND
It’s easy to display the treasures you collected during your treks around the world, but why not show off some of your own handiwork? Artists are turning old globes into pendant lights and using them to illuminate home offices, libraries or even dining room tables. You can unlock your inner artist and master by following these simple instructions:
1. Remove a globe from its stand. 2. Place the globe in a large bowl to keep it from rolling around. 3. Cut an opening in the top of the globe. Flip it over and repeat for the bottom of the globe, but this hole should be larger, about the size of your pendant light.
4. Use sandpaper to scrape away any rough edges around the holes. 5. Drill holes into the globe on your favorite cities, so the light shines through there. 6. Feed the pendant light through the holes. 7. Add an LED bulb, and you’re done!
A TAYLORMADE CRUISE
How does a three-day transatlantic luxury cruise departing from England sound? How about that same cruise, but with many of Elizabeth Taylor’s belongings on board? Travelers who buy tickets for Cunard’s flagship liner Queen Mary 2 departing on Oct. 18 out of Southampton will get an exclusive preview of the late star’s glamorous lifestyle and be able to bid on the icon’s home décor, jewelry, art, clothing and wigs in the exhibit “Property from the Lifestyle of Elizabeth Taylor.” From Dec. 6–8, remaining items from Taylor’s personal vault will be auctioned off at the Standard Oil Building in Beverly Hills. To book your ticket and to learn more about this once-in-a-lifetime cruise opportunity, contact Cunard at 800.728.6273 or visit cunard.com.

MUST-READS
You’ll get more stylish sleep—or at least be inspired to sleep more beautifully—after sifting through art collector and curator Celia Forner’s new tome, Bedtime: Inspirational Beds, Bedrooms & Boudoirs (Vendome Press, $35). Forner gives readers a peek into the bedrooms of royals, designers, decorators and hotels, and even into fictional bedrooms featured on stage and in movies. The book offers inspiration for designers and regular folk alike who may be looking to spice things up—design-wise, of course—in the most romantic room of the house. Speaking of romantic, the Nov. 15 release The House of Glam: Lush Interiors and Design Extravaganza (Gestalten, $69) will make you want to go the glamorous, maximalist route in your home. The coffee-table book highlights exciting homes around the world that embody this new design movement, described as a contemporary interpretation of Art Deco and classic ’50s and ’60s Hollywood filmsets. In addition to photos of real homes influenced by the style, The House of Glam profiles the designers and studios at the forefront of this new interior design initiative. Finally, ogle some seriously stunning architecture and design when Luxury Home Design (Images Publishing, $49), co-authored by residential and commercial architects Jaspar Jansen and Jeroen Dellensen, hits shelves and online retailers this December. The guys’ book highlights more than 40 design projects that epitomize modern, luxurious design, with encapsulating photos of each room and brief descriptions of the inspiration behind each.
A DREAM COLLABORATION
For the first time, you can set a table—or an entire room or home, for that matter—with your favorite Schumacher patterns. The company is known for its signature designs such as vibrant ikats, Chiang Mai Dragon, Chinois Fret and Scallop Filigree on textiles, fabrics, wallpapers and trims. But its new collab with Williams Sonoma brings these whimsical patterns to life in dinnerware, linens, upholstered furniture, home décor accessories and more. The entire collection is available online, but check your nearby Williams Sonoma store too.

NOW JASON WU DOES SOFAS TOO
Fashion designer Jason Wu has become famous for classic silhouettes, dressing the likes of Michelle Obama, Meghan Markle and Reese Witherspoon. Now the Taiwanese-Canadian artist is venturing out into furniture design, having released a line of exposed wood-frame sofas with furniture brand Interior Define. Much like Wu’s dresses, the couches are mid-centuryinspired, defined by their clean lines and meant to look good from all angles. The sofas are customizable too, with two-seat or three-seat iterations and with an optional chaise longue, accent chair and ottoman. There are also 60 different fabric and color options, because as with fashion, versatility in furniture is key. View the collection in the Interior Define store on Greene Street in New York City or at interiordefine.com.

HAVE YOUR LUNCH AND BUY THE TABLE TOO
DO MORE FOR YOUR FLOOR Ben Soleimani, the famed rug designer who’s produced upscale carpets for the royal family and had his own line of rugs with Restoration Hardware, has launched his own eponymous brand of rugs and carpets. Two things about this new collection stand out: One, the products are direct-to-consumer, which keeps prices low and quality high. Two, as of now the line consists only of rugs and textiles so that Soleimani can perfect his craft before—one hopes— expanding into furniture and décor later on. Check out his work at bensoleimani.com.
Ever eaten at a restaurant and wished you could purchase the décor? That chance has come. The famed housewares brand Crate & Barrel has branched out into the food and entertainment business with its first-ever in-store restaurant, The Table at Crate, which debuted in July inside one of its stores in Chicago. Of course the eatery’s décor features C&B housewares and furniture all over the place, including modern velvet dining chairs, pendant lights and a 13-foot communal dining table. And the menu reflects this modern simplicity too, offering innovative and vegetable-heavy dishes such as cauliflower lasagna and tartines topped with avocado. As of presstime, there were no plans to open The Table at Crate in the tri-state area, but next time you’re in the Windy City, wine, dine and shop all in one stop.
The force comes to your living room with this eclectic new line of high-end furniture inspired by Star Wars. In collaboration with Disney, Filipino designer Kenneth Cobonpue has unveiled a new collection of furniture (perhaps the only area of Star Wars memorabilia that hasn’t yet been tapped into) that imagines Star Wars characters as pieces in your home, because doesn’t every living room need a shaggy footrest that resembles Chewbacca or a black cushioned armchair a la Darth Vader? The luxury pieces are hardly kitschy, though, certainly giving a nod to the intergalactic characters yet staying true to Cobonpue’s design aesthetic—the lattice backing on the Vader Easy Armchair, for example, is his signature. The items are just a tad more expensive than a Star Wars T-shirt or lunch box, ranging in price from about $700 to $4,320 for the ultra-cool Vader lounge.

DIANE DUROCHER INTERIORS, INC. Ramsey, NJ 07446 | 201.825.3832 Dianedurocherinteriors.com I HAVE ALWAYS BEEN drawn to design. As a teenager I spent weekends browsing furniture showrooms and antique stores, and preferred House Beautiful magazine and Metropolitan Home to the typical teen magazines. A memorable Thanksgiving dinner at my aunt’s house cemented my love for interior design. From the elegant window treatments to the antique chandelier, with the crackling fire in the fireplace and the impeccably set table, the perfect ambiance seemed to make the meal taste even more delicious. That was when I realized that a well designed home is not only a lovely backdrop, but that it can positively influence how our lives are lived and enjoyed. Graduating from Berkeley College with my degree in interior design was a life-long dream. In 1995, I founded Diane Durocher Interiors. Together with my team, we have had the privilege to design numerous awarding winning projects. I believe that our success comes from our dedication to our clients, the design process and consistently striving to recreate that feeling that I had so many years ago.

A new retiree forges a fresh start in an elegant, urban apartment.
setting for a second act
Design by Diane Durocher Photography by Peter Rymwid
“I knew I wanted oval-backed dining chairs because they look so elegant, and we sat in four or five versions until we found some that were really comfortable,” says the homeowner. She adds that designer Diane Durocher “just nailed it with the pattern and the color. It blends so well with the ikat of the Roman shade.” The contemporary artwork and the antique chandelier add to the room’s eclectic vibe.

For the homeowner, it was just the beginning. Newly single and on the cusp of retirement, she saw her future in this 1,400-square-foot, one-bedroom city apartment. “I had left my husband and our apartment and almost all the stuff,” she remembers. “I moved in with only a card table and two card chairs,” she says. That gave interior designer Diane Durocher a clean slate to work with. “She hired me to design the apartment with classic furnishings and timeless ambience,” says Durocher of Diane Durocher Interiors in Ramsey. One of the few things the homeowner did bring with her from her former life was some Delft pottery, so Durocher used the blue as a jumping-off point for the design. “She showed me an ikat print fabric in blue that I absolutely loved, and everything flowed from there,” says the homeowner. The fabric became a Roman shade in the dining room, which is the homeowner’s favorite room in the apartment, thanks to a beautiful table and oval-backed chairs, a custom walnut server, a new built-in radiator cabinet with an abundance of storage and bookcases

This page, right: “We wanted to make a statement with the large entry foyer, emphasizing the height and creating an unobstructed flow from the entry to the adjacent rooms,” says Durocher. She removed the existing chair rail and installed a grasscloth wallcovering, adding texture and interest in a neutral tone and giving the room a heightened, vertical feel. The Louis XVI-style chairs are used for additional dining room seating. Opposite page, top: The existing bookcases were reworked so that a large TV could be installed, and glass shelving was added to allow the display of the homeowner’s collections from her travels as well as her mother’s antique China and tea sets. Opposite page, bottom: “The brass cocktail table and accessories support the formality of the space,” says Durocher.

Durocher used Oushak rugs to delineate each seating area in the large living room. The homeowner loves the forgiving blue tweed fabric on the comfortable TV chairs, and the ottomans can easily transition for additional seating for book club meetings.

The nightstands provide much-needed storage and crystal table lamps supply necessary reading light. Above left: “I like to entertain, but when I’m home, I also want to be comfortable,” says the homeowner. “There is a man in my life, and I wanted him to be comfortable as well, and these chairs fit the bill.” Above: The walnut dresser is flanked by custom bookcases, which provide additional storage, “and they are a strong silhouette against the pale sea backdrop,” says Durocher.

Durocher designed the tranquil bedroom around the upholstered bed in shades of sea green and blue. An avid bibliophile, the homeowner requested bookcases, a comfortable chair and ottoman for reading and nightstands with storage. “The chair is unbelievably comfortable,” says the homeowner. “I just get a feeling of peace and serenity when I’m in this room.” The project took about eight months and was a success, from personal and professional standpoints. “When my book club walked in for the first time, some of them just gasped,” says the homeowner. “Everyone who sees it loves it.” And the design won a silver award for Durocher in the apartment category at the American Society of Interior Designers Design Excellence Awards. The work was done while the homeowner was winding down her career, and now she really can enjoy her surroundings. “I’m loving my apartment,” she says, “and retirement is great.”

that handily accommodate her books and accessories. “It functions really well and looks really elegant,” she says. “Not a lot of apartments have separate dining rooms, but this one did, and I’m getting tremendous joy out of it.” The dining room is adjacent to a bright and sunny living room, which was divided into two distinct sections. “The client wanted a TV viewing area with comfortable seating as well as a more formal area where she could entertain her book club,” explains Durocher. One of the most striking aspects of the design is the navy blue drapery, which emphasizes the height of the room, and the ikat-pattern Roman shade valance, which conceals a practical Duette honeycomb shade set on a timer to aid with glare. The drapery frames a favorite navy upholstered sofa. “I had always wanted a navy couch,” the homeowner says, “and I wanted to go a little more feminine, which I could do. The best part was not having to compromise on my choices. I’m still loving that aspect.”

Goodbye, terra-cotta-tile floors and pine cabinets! This colonial’s kitchen finally has had its turn at redesign, and the owners couldn’t be more pleased with the results. Here, Carrara marble and metal come together in a chevron pattern for the backsplash, a mix of metals in the stainless-steel appliances and gold pendant lights continues the first floor’s style story and gray vinyl floors make cleaning a snap.

a steam oven and a 60-inch galley sink, all meant for the serious cook. There’s also a new bar area in place of a seldom-used desk, perfect for a family that loves to entertain. But if this kitchen gets the job done, it’s also a style star. In rich plum, the stainless-steel-based cabinets over the bar match up with other color accents in the open floor plan. “We think a little pop of color here and there gives it something extra,” says Tal, who chose plum to make the contemporary neutral palette unforgettable. No ho-hum subway tiles for the backsplash; Carrara marble and metal team up to create a chevron pattern and just the right accent for the kid-friendly quartz countertops, positioned below pale gray cabinets that climb to the ceiling for extra space. Another design connection Vijayan provided is a combination of metals, from the chrome faucets to the stove hood in polished satin and stainless steel. “We have a mix of gold and metal throughout the kitchen, and stainless-steel appliances contrasted with gold pendant lights over the island and peninsula,” says Jonathan. Even the gray wood-effect flooring has this family in mind, with its easy-to-clean vinyl, Vijayan explains. Completing this class act, the kitchen is now bright and warm, with new baseboard heat cleverly disguised as a footrest with its quartz cover and, naturally, more lighting. “They love it,” says Vijayan of the new design, which puts this family of chefs right where they want to be, at home cooking up a storm—together.
This page: The smiling faces of the children ages 4, 7 and 10, joined by mom Tal Kazam, say it all. There is a table for family meals, but this peninsula with gray stools is ideal for snacks and breakfast. Designer Aparna Vijayan even built drawers into the kitchen side of the peninsula to store kids’ utensils and the like for uber convenience. Opposite page: Plum hues in the cabinets above the stainless-steel-based bar prove that this family is not afraid of color and play nicely against the neutral contemporary palette. Instead of a seldom-used desk, they now have a bar to entertain with ease.

It wasn’t a zest for takeout food that landed the Kazams’ kitchen on the back burner of a sweeping remodel at their Tenafly home. Both Tal and Jonathan, along with their three children, are culinary aficionados, and there’s nothing like the hearty aroma of dinner cooking to draw them close. Unfortunately, the old kitchen was more of a solo act than a recipe for family togetherness. “It created a traffic jam at times if there was more than one person in the kitchen,” recalls Tal, faulting a center island that left no room for seating. So, why didn’t the kitchen—the true heart of this now-contemporary colonial—lead the design parade after the couple’s 2012 move from NYC? “The original kitchen was quite large and functional, so coming from the city we were quite satisfied,” says Jonathan, a Franklin Lakes native. Yet as the first floor shed its Southwestern décor reminiscent of the ’80s with terra-cotta tiles, the kitchen’s time had come. “It was so not their style,” says Aparna Vijayan of the Ridgewood design firm Ulrich Inc. “The rest of the house was very slick and sophisticated.” While other designers couldn’t reimagine the old layout, Vijayan impressed the homeowners with plans to set them free of that island. Her vision: a peninsula breakfast bar that would offer just-right-for-kids stool seating while a small prep island maximized style on stainless-steel legs. “Now, with the new layout, we can both work in the kitchen at the same time,” says Jonathan. Other perks are the stainless-steel appliances such as

Text by Haley Longman Design by Rachael Grochowski Photography by John Bessler
Designer and architect Rachael Grochowski of RHG A+D in Montclair melded the wife’s modern, minimalist tastes with her husband’s more transitional style—and large stature—in this completely reconfigured kitchen with custom-stained white oak cabinetry. Hidden storage throughout keeps the kids’ clutter out of sight, while cleverly concealed doors lead to a mudroom.

Besides the wooden vanities, “everything else is really white.” Finding natural light in the historic home proved a difficult task with this project (“the windows had a unique shape,” says the designer), but perhaps the biggest challenge throughout the process was making room for the husband’s preferences—both physically and aesthetically. “He works in finance, but in college he went to school for architecture, so he had a real interest in the aesthetics of the project,” she says. “And he is very tall, about six-foot-nine, so we had to create a design that accentuated the height.” The man of the house had “free rein” design-wise and liked the transitional look, but his European wife still wanted her modern, minimalistic tastes to be represented too. The result? A multifunctional family home in the heart of historic Montclair that seamlessly married two tastes—while maintaining marital bliss.

ner, is an avid traveler whose sojourns across Europe, Africa and Asia have helped refine her design sense and feed her passion for collecting antiques and original art. All of this served her well in transforming the dated bedroom in a 20th-century mansion into a multifunctional space that marries traditional and contemporary design. Worthy of a Greek magnate and his pampered paramour, the palatial, 390-square-foot suite is a sybaritic retreat of sumptuous comfort. Softly curved sofas in sensuous velvet embellished with Greek-key-pattern borders welcome visitors to an intimate lounging area. Floral appliquéd pillows add textural interest and plushness. A velvet ottoman of celestial blue with acrylic legs seems to float in the space. The intricately patterned carpet from SBS Flooring provides an anchoring counterbalance, while an elegant églomisé cocktail cabinet nearby suggests a relaxing drink by the fire. Ouzo, anyone? The seating area’s scale and proportion are balanced by the dramatic sleeping space. To heighten the prominence of the queen-sized bed, the designer showcased it against a romantic custom backdrop—a glamor-

She’s talking about the award-winning room she created for the “Mansion in May” Designer Showhouse and Gardens at Alnwick Hall in Morristown. “My inspiration,” she explains, “came from the mesmerizing blue-green colors of the Aegean Sea and the charming soft white that characterizes the Greek villages that line its shores.” “‘Mansion in May’ is an important fundraiser for the Morristown Medical Center, so it was nice to take part in this worthy process,” Bevill says. “I’m proud I was able to achieve a balance that respected the historic setting and its architecture yet also had a fresh, young look relevant to today.” Bevill, a six-time American Society of Interior Designers award win-

Chipped and scarred surface defects were employed to create realistic-looking marble veining effects. The stained surround was camouflaged with a removable cover faux-painted to resemble Caribbean blue granite. Other esthetic focal points, including the commissioned transitional and contemporary art, carry through the suite’s theme. Above the fireplace— freshly painted to allow period details to shine—Cypress trees sway against a twilight seascape. On either side, Lucite obelisks harmonize the space without distracting from the tranquil scene. Perched on scalloped wall brackets, crystal shell design vases entice the eye to the painting of a Greek nymph floating gracefully in a mythical underwater world of gold seagrass and glass beads. Finishing the arrangement, a European sideboard embellished with curved gold X carvings is offset by a pair of tufted chairs. vered quartz bench to give it that spa-like quality. The oval-shaped soaking tub from WetStyle, though, is the bathroom’s true showstopper. “We removed the existing platform tub because it was dated and took up space, and we installed a freestanding tub,” Palmadessa says. “It’s unique because it has a wood surround, so you can put a drink down. We just loved the warmth of the wood, and it was a nice contrasting element.” In terms of the color palette, the creative team deliberately chose warm, natural tones interspersed with ethereal pops of denim blue. “The floor is a light sand color, and we brought in navy,” says Palmadessa. “The tile above the vanities is a navy hexagon glass mosaic that gives a watery effect and a ‘wow’ factor.” And it’s this mixing-and-matching element that this seasoned pro finds so thrilling about the design process. “I think people are afraid to mix patterns and fear it’s going to be too busy,” she says. “But I love that each vignette is a different surprise, where it’s not all the same but it’s cohesive. That’s definitely my aesthetic.”
This page: In between the two floating vanities, each with a custom white concrete counter and a ramp sink by Trueform Concrete, is a revamped barn door leading to the master bedroom. It’s safe to assume that a working single dad with three kids and two dogs is almost always busy. So when it came time to revamp his Franklin Lakes home, including his ensuite master bathroom, he had to bring in the pros. Enter Danielle Palmadessa of DRP Interiors in Franklin Lakes. Palmadessa and her team redesigned a few rooms in this client’s house, including his master bedroom and the outdated ensuite bathroom. “He really let us run with it, and he wasn’t super opinionated,” the designer tells us, recalling the gutrenovation bathroom project. “But he wanted light, bright and modern—and a much larger shower.” The enlarged shower is undeniably a standout, with a mix of glass and marble tiles by Stratta orchestrated in a Mondrian pattern along the focal wall. The team closed an interior window to make the shower larger and installed a metal mosaic tile on the ceiling, along with subtle textured wallpaper from Phillip Jeffries that carries from the inside of the shower to the end of the wall. The shower also has an oversized, brushed-nickel rain shower head and a custom cantile-

A Newark hotel renovation honors the building’s early 20th-century roots by adding a modern spin to Art Deco style.
When the building on East Park Street was new, Newark was a city of immigrants and industry, businessmen and bootleggers, nightlife and live theater—a place as historic as nearby Military Park, just celebrating its 250th anniversary, and as modern as the Art Deco architecture rising in the vibrant downtown. Over the next hundred years, the building and the city would lose much of their Roaring Twenties luster. But today, downtown Newark is in the midst of a bustling revival, and the six-story building has been reborn as the TRYP by Wyndham Newark Downtown Hotel, a gem of a boutique hostelry polished to perfection by Montclairbased designer Blanche Garcia. Garcia set out to revitalize the building and usher it stylistically into the 21st century without ignoring its Art Deco roots. The result is an interior that’s elegant yet playful, contemporary but cognizant of the past, in a style Garcia characterizes as “modern deco.” “You want a nod to the past,” she says, “but you don’t want to live in the past.” Those modern deco elements include the bar’s half-round banquettes with backs of channeled mohair (a motif repeated throughout the hotel’s public spaces), upholstery in glowing jewel tones, stacked geometric pendant lights in the lobby, massive

columns sheathed in chamfered, gold-toned metal, and two stunning torchieres comprising nearly life-sized seated nudes holding glowing glass orbs. The torchieres began life as fountains, purchased in Thailand, sent to California to be patinaed, and finally fitted with the glass globes and wired for electricity. Garcia’s challenge was to roll all of these elements into an interior that hewed to the TRYP brand, which is characterized by a sense of place, a celebration of travel, open spaces that invite lingering and playful spots throughout that promise bound-for-Instagram photos. Reminders of Newark’s past and present are everywhere, from a colorchanging oversized lightbulb (Thomas Edison debuted his first electric light at an exposition in Military Park) to the murals that greet guests on every landing, depicting Newark natives—Queen Latifah and Shaquille O’Neal, for instance. Another nod to Newark’s history is the name of the bar/restaurant in the lobby, Dutch’s, named for mobster Dutch Schultz, who famously hung out at a little boîte around the corner (since demolished). Though the building was virtually gutted before the renovation, Garcia kept two elements from its past, per

the requirements of the city’s Landmarks & Historic Preservation Commission: the “Chiclet” tile floor in the bar and restaurant and the outlines of the original windows on the brick-and-sandstone exterior. The travel theme is evident throughout the public spaces: Garcia staged a cozy corner in the lobby with a whimsical mile marker (“São Paulo, Brazil, 4778 miles; Ferry Street, 2 miles”) and “shelves” that are actually sliced-down vintage suitcases. And she melded travel and Art Deco nostalgia in a custom wooden frieze depicting an early 20th-century plane, train and car. Garcia made sure those public spaces were open and inviting: “The lobby is truly open-concept,” she notes. “The front desk wraps around to the lobby, which flows into the lounge.” The restaurant is used in the morning as a breakfast bar until it opens for business at lunch. “You don’t want to feel there’s a void at any time,” the architect explains. With its vivid colors and eye-catching design accents, the lobby is an Instagrammer’s dream. On two splashy pendant chandeliers, the individual lights are shaded by postcards that Garcia transformed into holograms; each card depicts a locale that’s home to a TRYP hotel. But

nothing says “selfie” like the tall chairs that surround a long table in the restaurant. Emblazoned on the back of each chair is the name of a royal personage (“King,” “Countess,” “Joker” and so on); on the front are portraits depicting each of the royals (and the two jokers) and playful three-dimensional crowns, designed to sit above each diner’s head. One of the hotel’s owners, Brendan Berger, says that “guests like the fun, lively feel of the restaurant and the lobby in general.” In the guestrooms, the TRYP brand—emphasizing pared-down furnishings, comfort (in the form of upholstered headboards and area rugs under the beds for a soft footfall), and airiness—is particularly apparent. To all of that, Garcia added striking Art Deco elements such as channeling on the headboards and fuchsia houndstooth-patterned carpets. And if guests are looking for an in-room photo op, they’ll find one against a small wall marked with measurements of the heights of various Newark luminaries, the tallest of which, at seven-foot-one, is Shaquille O’Neal’s. It’s a small touch, but emblematic of a design that derives its charm from a panoply of small but perfectly wrought touches.

ment level they asked for a wine room, a rec/TV space, another guest suite and a gym, and on the second floor, a large master suite plus a suite for each of the three daughters. They also wanted strong first-floor sight lines, as they’d had in California. “When you walked through the front door,” says Lazar, “you could look right through to the back, where they had a beautiful pool. That was my goal for this house too.” The foyer, per request, is indeed grand. Entering through a pair of 8-foot doors, the family and their guests are greeted by a magnificent free-floating circular stairway leading to a second-floor landing. Attracting the eye upward to the 20-foot ceiling is a trio of large wooden light fixtures that have the look of hanging modernist sculpture. Beyond the staircase on the first floor is a large portrait of Andy Warhol set into a wall built specifically for the painting. “Initially, that space was going to be a door to a powder room,” notes Hefner. “But as the design evolved, the powder room was moved to be adjacent to the butler’s pantry, and the original space for it became a blank wall that we were able to recess in order to give the art prominence.” The most prominent presence is the light itself. To ensure the bright, airy

For the homeowners, a pair of New Jersey natives who’d moved from Westfield to Los Angeles and were now planning a move back, California had become more than a location. Like so many East Coast transplants, they’d learned to love the light, the casual kick-your-feet-up feeling, and the seamlessness between indoors and out that characterize everyday living in SoCal. And they wanted to bring all of that back to the new house they were planning to build in Westfield. To that end, a year before the move, they flew architect Hildie Lazar to LA to show her what they loved about the West Coast so she could replicate it 2,400 miles to the east. Along with a dedicated team that included interior designers Hilary Hefner and Michelle Rosen, Lazar came up with a design that helped to quell the family’s homesickness for LA while welcoming them back to the leafy hills of central New Jersey. The family—a couple and their three teenage daughters—had a strong sense of what they wanted in the new house. That included lots of room to spread out, a grand foyer on the first floor along with a dining room, a living room, a guest suite for visiting family, two powder rooms and a large kitchen adjacent to a spacious family room overlooking the backyard. On the base-

The light fixture, art, table and chairs were all favorites of the homeowners and were shipped from California. Unfortunately, the tabletop broke in transit, so the designers swapped it out for a darker piece of quartz with white veining to add drama to the space. The only room on the first floor without white walls, the dining room was designed to feel intimate and clublike, with a pleated goldfabric wallcovering from Innovations.

and upholstered chairs echo the predominant hue of an abstract painting hung over the fireplace. The portrait of Andy Warhol is set above a striking midnight-blue bench. And in the family room, the three large slabs of marble that make up the fireplace surround were chosen for their unusual coloration: white with prominent veining in green and soft pink. But the family room is where the family really lives large: Though zoning requirements meant that the house couldn’t exceed 4,000 square feet, high ceilings—12 feet in the family room—and a layout that consistently draws the eye upward and outward offer a sense of endless space. A second tier of windows in the family room adds to the upward flow, and a large opening to the kitchen and breakfast nook gives the main living area an open-concept feeling that extends to the calming minimalist landscape design outside. It’s definitely New Jersey out there, but the Garden State greenery sets off an interior that, in its embrace of fun, sun and color, is pure Southern California.

feel that the homeowners requested, Lazar installed banks of large windows throughout the house. In both the living and family rooms, there are four-panel sliding doors comprising four glass panels, two of which, in the center, slide to each side to create a broad opening—12 feet wide in the living room and 16 feet in the family room—to the outdoors. Echoing the multi-paned windows with their black metal trim is a glass archway that the designers created for the pass-through from the kitchen to the family room. That dark window trim is a nod to the East Coast, where the light and vistas change dramatically throughout the year. Another contrast comes from the dark flooring. “In their California home,” Hefner says, “the family had whitewashed floors. Our vision for this house was lots of white walls to embrace the brightness, but set off with darker elements like the floors and window trim.” It’s not just light that brightens the house. Vivid colors suffuse the design, a reflection of the fun-loving family and their collection of colorful art. In the living room, for instance, an aqua rug

The guest-room suite on the first floor was designed for comfort and ease with the homeowners’ furniture, including Moroccan leather poufs, a matching coral rug and tortoise shell window treatments. “Everything that faces outward in the home,” says designer Rosen, “is a nod to the natural.”

express yourself
You don’t need a master’s degree in fine art to curate and display paintings, photos and other finds like a pro. Arranging art and personal items on a wall in your home injects personality into the room, expresses your aesthetic point of view and, best yet, it’s temporary should your design tastes or preferences change. The first step in building a gallery wall is to choose a centerpiece, a larger item that will be the focal point—later, you’ll fill it in with smaller pieces to create balance. Once you find your main item, figure out what the overall theme will be. Perhaps it’s a bright color to complement your décor or something more thematic such as nature or fashion. Each item should be meaningful, of course, but still cohesive so the wall tells a story and doesn’t look haphazard. Not sure what to hang? Sticking with just family photos or framed artwork is fine, or go the eclectic route by mixing and
matching different objects, like grandma’s china, a mirror, typography or even your kids’ paintings. Mingling materials adds unexpected texture to the wall, while 3-D objects inject some serious dimension. Before picking up a hammer and nail, lay all your pieces out on the floor and rearrange them as you wish so you can envision the final product before you hang—this makes it easier to visualize and is better than making holes as you figure it all out. Once you’re satisfied with your creation (and you’ve snapped a photo of the arrangement that you can refer back to), it’s time to get hanging! Aim to have about 1¾ inches between items so each piece stands out on its own, and leave at least 8 inches above furniture. The best thing yet about a gallery wall is its versatility; unlike with paint or wallpaper, you can easily swap out a few objects every season to keep things fresh—and keep guests guessing.

A dramatic sphere can provide the spark your patio needs to conquer backyard boredom.
GAL.f19.endpage.indd 104
Roasting marshallows over a stone firepit can be fun, but let’s face it—that’s all child’s play. Add visual interest and a little warmth during a cool autumn night with an aged-steel fire globe. Created by artists and blacksmiths, the rustic steel of these spheres can be molded into various shapes and depictions that tell their own tales as you and your guests share late-night conversations. Lithuanian blacksmith Andrius Ziedas, for example, constructs scenes, such as an army of Vikings approaching land (at left), that add dramatic flair (and flare) when backlit by a wood-burning flame. Whether you choose conquering Norsemen, an African safari or a forest landscape, companies like Parker Homescape in Basking Ridge or Horizon Landscape Company in Wyckoff can help you find the backyard fire feature that fits your style.
