a sense of renewal

O

ut with the old, in with the new. If you’re like me, you might repeat this oft used phrase on many occasions this time of year. This is, of course, the season for recharge and renewal, particularly at home. There’s the hope to finish all those spring cleaning ventures—I know I’ve been guilty of setting aside a declutter job by a week or two. Then there are large-scale projects that are years in the making: updating an aging kitchen, repurposing wasted space, improving flow in high-trafficked rooms. Delays happen for one reason or another, but when putting together this issue of NJ Home, we found that homeowners typically grapple with balancing the old with the new too. When confronted by this hurdle, a Livingston couple asked Short Hills-based designer Karen B. Wolf to help them give their traditional

Pennsylvania Dutch farmhouse a modern touch. The home, Wolf says, had beautiful bones but was in need of a modern flow. Her solution: open the space and create interesting juxtapositions with pops of color, patterns and art, catering to the different style preferences of the husband and wife. Turn to “A Farmhouse Comes to Life” on page 86 for the results. Wyckoff designer Sharon L. Sherman faced a similar situation when a Kinnelon couple hired her to make sense of their traditional kitchen, which was dark and featured a two-level island. The old design fit the family’s old needs, but they began using the kitchen more for summer get-togethers and parties. In “Party Central” on page 78, see how Sherman opened the space and brightened the look, creating a celebration-worthy room Then there’s the case of Lisa Balsam, who, plain and simple, didn’t like the old. Balsam hated the ’80s-style den she and her husband, Bruce, created as part of a 1990 addition to their otherwise traditional Tenafly colonial. But she didn’t redecorate until a few years ago when an injury kept her at home and in constant view of the room. Enter Wyckoff designer Terri Fiori, who created a transitional design that was eventually carried out through the rest of the first floor. Read about the project in “That Was Den, This Is Now” on page 74. In addition to these articles, this issue of NJ Home is filled with stories, advice, tips and more that we hope will inspire you. If you’re updating your decor this season, the outdoor furniture in “Take A Seat” (page 96) or the lanterns in “New Flames” (page 38) are worth a look. But if you want to add a vintage touch to your space, the antique pieces in “Let There Be Light” (page 42) might be up your alley. Whatever your project is this season, we hope it comes with an easy balancing act and a result that rewards you with a sense of renewal.

WHAT’S UP, WHAT’S NEW AND WHAT TO DO.

ENJOY A MASTER PEACE

Why not let great art soothe your slumber? For its new collaboration, Savoir Beds will turn any painting from the prestigious National Gallery in London into a made-to-order bed. Choose from three lustrous fabrics—linen, velvet or cotton—and from 2,300 paintings from the likes of Leonardo da Vinci, Rembrandt, Monet and van Gogh. Order your one-of-a-kind piece at savoirbeds.com.

WELCOME TO THE NEIGHBORHOOD

Shades, blinds and curtains, oh my! Metropolitan Window Fashions has opened a new store in Green Brook (270 Rte. 22 W.), its second in New Jersey, carrying customized Hunter Douglas window treatments for every room of the home. This new location at Fabricland is also New Jersey’s largest fabric sewing and window fashions store. Meanwhile, Hawthorne is now home to Lighting Studio (1050 Goffle Rd.), a new designer showroom that sells lighting and unique home furnishings and décor. Manufacturers include Visual Comfort, Troy, Mitzi and Corbett.

There’s a very good chance that the paint splattered across your living room walls was born—and, well, raised—right here in New Jersey. Morris County’s Mount Olive is home to Benjamin Moore’s research and development center, where the colorants and base paints for the brand’s 3,500 hues are created and tested. And we mean really tested, as more than 25,000 boards containing paint on wood, aluminum, brick and other materials are evaluated 24/7 at the indoor and outdoor facility, sometimes for years on end, to ensure the finishes are fade-resistant, scuff-proof, durable and gloss-retentive, which are just some of the qualifications today’s customers are looking for in paint. Among those colors is Metropolitan AF-690, a light gray that’s Benjamin Moore’s official Color of the Year 2019, because, yes, the neutral hue is still the most desirable both in interior design and in real estate. Knowing the journey your paint made before it hit the can and your wall—and that it all began in the Garden State—really puts a whole new perspective on your living room, does it not?

AND THE COLOR IS…

Every year, the folks at Pantone Color Institute designate an official color of the year for fashion and home design. The big winner for 2019? Living Coral, “a nurturing color that appears in our natural surroundings and at the same time displays a lively presence within social media,” as the company says. And as with most vibrant hues, a little goes a long way in the home. You need not paint a whole room in the golden-tinged hue (though an accent wall could make a nice statement, no?), but can start small with accent pieces, such as throw pillows, lamps, bedding or rugs. Coral and orange in general pair well with gray and white, or you can add in some turquoise for a beachy vibe. Here are some coral products we love:

HOME SHOWS TO CHECK OUT

Whether you’re looking to embark on a large-scale renovation or a minor home update—or just are seeking a little design inspiration—there are plenty of ways to get started right here in New Jersey this spring. Here are a few: The interactive NJ Home Show, coming to Toms River March 30–31 and Voorhees on April 5–7, has home renovation experts on hand—think window treatments, kitchen remodeling and landscaping—to help you get started on your own projects. • Ocean County Home Show, RWJBarnabas Health Arena, 1245 Old Freehold Rd., Toms River. • South Jersey Spring Home Show, Virtua Center Flyers Skate Zone, 601 Laurel Oak Rd., Voorhees; njhomeshow.com Then on April 14, add the finishing touches at the Somerville Arts & Crafts Festival, where 100 artisans will display their crafts and fine art, including paintings, pottery, jewelry, photography—the works.

• Somerville Arts & Crafts Festival, Main Street, Somerville; jcpromotions.info/ arts-crafts. And what’s springtime in the Garden State without some fresh blooms? The 17th annual New Jersey Flower & Garden Show in Edison April 25–28 features gardening presentations, seminars, demonstrations and the can’t-miss Standard Flower Show that’ll make you want to up your own gardening game. This year’s theme is “Artists of the Past,” and there will be stunning and unique garden displays inspired by the magical world of Disney. • New Jersey Flower & Garden Show, NJ Convention and Expo Center, 97 Sunfield Ave., Edison; njflowershow.com.

Clockwise from top left: Kvell wall clock, Edwin coral arm chair, Serena & Lily suede pillow cover, Avedon mini table lamp.

The bathroom is a room we can’t live without, so why should it be humdrum? It shouldn’t, says designer India Mahdavi, who has created a punchy new collection for Italian tile brand Bisazza (bisazza.com). The whimsical tub, sink and mirror come in pistachio, blueberry and, perhaps coincidentally, the 2019 Pantone Color of the Year, Living Coral.

MUST-READS

Finally, an interior design book specifically for parents. Lifestyle expert and mom-of-one Erin Gates’ new book focuses on designing your home with kids in mind. Elements Of Family Style: Elegant Spaces for Everyday Life (Atria Books, $26) is full of candid advice on how to make your space stylish and beautiful yet practical and functional for the whole family. World-renowned interior designer Bunny Williams’ new volume, Love Affairs with Houses (Abrams, $60), features stunning photos of 15 houses she’s decorated. It includes the personal stories behind each home as well as design secrets, like how to decorate with pieces that can have multiple uses and how to choose classic items for each room. Have a friend who’s watching her design dollars? There’s a tome for her too. Betsy Helmuth shares her top tricks in Affordable Interior Design: High-End Tips For Any Budget (Skyhorse, $13). Learn how to create a gallery wall, how to choose paint colors, where to place accent tables and more in this book that’s for both DIY novices and experts alike.

HOME DÉCOR FROM DIOR

Dior has been using the Toile de Jouy pattern in its designs since 1947. But now the fashion brand is reinventing itself by incorporating wild animals, such as tigers and lions, into its iconic motif. The pattern is strewn across plates and pillows in Dior’s new capsule home collection, available at dior.com and in Dior stores worldwide.

Want some more inspiration? These museum exhibits are worth the trek: Walk through 23 rooms ranging from the 17th century to the 20th at the Decorative Arts and Period Rooms exhibit at the Brooklyn Museum. Each room features curated furniture and decorative artifacts from both the U.S. and Europe. • Brooklyn Museum, 200 Eastern Pkwy., Brooklyn, N.Y.; brooklynmuseum.org Raise a glass to Manhattan’s Museum of Art and Design’s Goblet Collection. The ongoing exhibit showcases whimsical goblets made by well-known studio glass artists such as Fred Birkhill, Dale Chihuly and Fritz Dreisbach. It’s on view throughout 2019.

• Museum of Arts and Design, 2 Columbus Circle, New York, N.Y.; madmuseum.org And here’s an excuse to celebrate spring break in sunny Florida. LA-based design duo The Haas Brothers, whose celebrity fans include Lady Gaga and Donatella Versace, opened their first solo exhibit in December titled The Haas Brothers: Ferngully at Miami Beach’s Bass Museum of Art to coincide with Art Basel. Their eclectic and anthropomorphic pieces will be on display until April 21—here’s hoping their humorously titled “Zitney Spears” and “Palm Grier” works make appearances too. • The Bass, 2100 Collins Ave., Miami Beach, Fla.; thebass.org

To soften the formal features of the great room and complement the dark wood of a credenza and Sheridan bookcase, the designer washed the whole room in white, recovered the homeowners’ sofa in a creamy white velvet and added a pair of pale blue Louis Solomon chairs to flank the fireplace. The custom silk draperies are in keeping with the home’s palette overall, a pleasing mix of white, sand and pastel blue.

The Georgian house in Franklin Lakes, with its high ceilings and elegant moldings, belied its age of barely three decades. It also seemed to belie the age of the new owners, a pair of young professionals who wanted to breathe some youth into its grand but overly formal rooms. So they turned to Diane Durocher, a Ramseybased designer, who had the perfect prescription: an influx of contemporar y furnishings and a pastel palette of sand and pale blue that manages to at once feel calming and fresh. “You can create a warm feeling with a cool palette,” explains Durocher, “by integrating texture and interest into the design.” She added textural elements such as a series of dramatic silk draperies in the great room, quatrefoil-patterned curtains in the kitchen and master bedroom and area rugs throughout to complement the original dark-wood flooring. As for interest, it’s evident in spades, from the kitchen chandelier, with its aged iron and seeded glass, to the painted “wallpaper” in the master bath, to the homeowners’ dark-wood pieces that Durocher softened—and, at the same time, allowed to pop—through the use of upholstered seating in

GAL.s19.durocher/franklinlakes.indd 52

cool pastels and other palehued elements. “I love the strong silhouette that the case goods create against the lighter palette,” Durocher says. In the great room, for instance, two darkwood pieces—a large Sheridanstyle bookcase and a cur ving credenza—are balanced by a clean-lined contemporar y sofa, originally brown but reupholstered in a creamy white velvet, and a pair of trellis-patterned chairs that flank the fireplace. And in an anteroom, a wooden sideboard is set off by air y Chippendale chairs with pale-blue upholstered seats and a pastel blue floral area rug. The sideboard’s shelves hold whimsical, informal pieces, such as cream-colored earthenware jugs and a pair of white planters bearing faux foliage. In fact, the anteroom, situated between the great room and the study, represented something of a quandary for both the homeowners and Durocher. It didn’t instantly suggest a function and rarely was used. Given its access to the outdoor grilling area, Durocher created an informal dining area-cum-game room in the space, furnishing it with a round dining table and those

NJHome

Chippendale chairs, thus adding another youthful touch. “The homeowners now use it as an extended entertaining area,” she says. In contrast to the undeniable grandeur of the great room, the anteroom feels welcoming and even cozy. The same is true— deliberately—of the kitchen dining and family room area, where a sand-colored chenille sofa and upholstered chair provide comfortable seating. The homeowners asked the design team to add pops of red to the room to warm it further, and they complied with a selection of accent pillows and the patterned curtains. Fittingly, that sense of comfort and warmth infuses the master bedroom and adjacent sitting room. In both, blue plays a larger role than sand or white; it wraps the walls, and it’s picked up in the soft area rugs and a pair of upholstered sofas in the sitting room. The darker finishes on the bed, night tables and dresser also add warmth, and their modest scale keeps them from over whelming the room’s softer elements—for example, a sand-colored upholstered bench at the foot of the bed. “Our clients wanted their master suite to be a calm retreat in the palette that they’re so fond of,” says Durocher. Both rooms, she notes, “are layered,

textural and serene.” And like the furniture here, preexisting elements, such as molding, a mullioned glass door and the sitting-room fireplace, are smaller in scale, giving the two rooms a cozy, self-contained feel. In fact, the only room in the house that doesn’t make use of original architectural details is the master bathroom. The homeowners weren’t fond of the green marble tile that lined the floor and rather than simply replace it, Durocher proposed a more extensive redo. She installed a new tub and gleaming Carrara marble tiles on the floor and shower surround and repainted the existing cabinetr y, setting off the stenciled blue walls. Additional details—such as relaxed Roman shades, a delicate upholstered bench and a built-in makeup vanity and mirror—soften the overall ambience. The result is a room that blends seamlessly with the rest of the master suite. Removal of that dark green tile swept away the house’s last stodgy detail, leaving it just as the homeowners and designer envisioned it: elegant for sure, but also as bright, young and welcoming as the couple who call it home.

maker and other gadgets. Now they are tucked away out of sight on either side of the cooktop. Kleyman suggested the custom-hammered copper hood to give “both a touch of modern shine and warm rusticity to the space,” she says. “We also used oil-rubbed bronze hardware and custom metal brackets in a matching finish on the island to tie it all together.” Bi-fold glass doors blur the line between indoor and outdoor living. Gates had seen them in a magazine years ago and saved the picture, and now had the perfect project in which to use them. When the doors are open, a remote-controlled screen can be lowered, essentially turning the whole house into a screened-in porch. “It gives us 12 feet of nice breeze,” she says. “We love it.” The project took about two-and-a-half years to complete, but it was worth the wait, says Gates. Now her husband is having the fun he was looking forward to. “He water-skis at, like, 6 a.m.,” she says, laughing. “He is definitely making the most of the lake.”

This page: One of homeowner Laurie Gates’ favorite features of the new kitchen is the island, which has wine storage and refrigerator drawers so it’s easy to grab a drink when you step inside from the deck. “The island is incredibly useful, from gathering and eating to serving,” says Gates. “It really makes my life easier.” Opposite page, top: The kitchen and dining room open onto a sitting area featuring a TV and a gas fireplace. Thanks to folding glass walls and French doors, the entire space has an unbeatable view of the spring-fed lake. Laurie Gates and her husband had always enjoyed boating, so when a lot with an old house went up for sale at a good price on Green Pond in Rockaway Township, they jumped at the chance to try lake living. “We used to live in the woods, and it was beautiful, but there wasn’t a lot to do,” says Gates. “My husband thought that this house would be more fun to come home to after work.” The Gateses soon embarked on building a new fourbedroom, Craftsman-style home on the property and hired Julia Kleyman of Ulrich Inc. in Ridgewood to design the open kitchen, dining area and living room. “The focal point is the lake, and we didn’t want to distract from the gorgeous view,” says Kleyman, “so we chose neutral colors for the Quartzite countertops and a transitional door style with clean lines for the WoodMode cabinets.” One of the homeowner’s priorities was concealing all of the appliances that usually sit on the countertop, so she requested appliance garages with retractable doors to hide the microwave, toaster, coffee

At first it was purely a business opportunity. Little Falls-based architect Dan D’Agostino was planning to develop a one-acre parcel of land in Bergen County’s Washington Township with his contractor partner, Mike Elayan. Then he thought again. At the crest of a road lined with elegant homes, the leafy property was at the highest elevation in the area, affording unobstructed views of sunrises and sunsets. Living in a house built to take advantage of those views, D’Agostino thought, would be a little bit like being on permanent vacation. Given the scarcity of vacation time in his life—he and his wife have demanding careers and two children under 5—it suddenly seemed wrong to be building a house on that land for somebody else. So he and his contractor— who also happened to be his best friend—decided to divide the property and build on it for themselves—an idea, says D’Agostino, “that was just too good to pass up.” The house he created, with ample input from his wife, Andrea, delivers not just those awe-inspiring views but a host of amenities that indeed make every day feel like an “on holiday” day. Soaring walls of glass on the front and back of the house make the most of celestial events and green vistas. D’Agostino installed a

floating steel stairway between the first and second stories to maximize outdoor views. “From the great room,” he says, “we can see the sun rising on our left in the morning and setting on our right at night.” The great room also reflects the family’s desire to live communally. An open-concept layout allows them to be together even if they’re engaged in different activities. And while the spacious room encompasses living and dining areas and a kitchen, it’s still imbued with the cozy feeling the D’Agostinos loved in their previous, smaller home, thanks largely to clever design: While the ceiling is elevated in the entryway and over the dining alcove to take advantage of the glass walls, it’s deliberately lower over a large part of the great room. In the living area, three smaller windows, punctuated with dark draperies, add to the feeling of coziness. There are no curtain rods to interrupt the sense of enclosure: The draperies actually are recessed into the ceiling. “I tried very hard to volley back and forth between closed and open,” D’Agostino says. The coziest room in the house is probably the master bedroom. Its vaulted ceiling adds drama, but also could have made the room feel excessively stark had it not been for D’Agostino’s deft touches,

This page: The ceiling over the living area was kept deliberately low, and the curtains were recessed into the ceiling to give the area a cozy feel. A pair of hourglass ottomans are tucked under a console table (all from Ethan Allen) for additional seating. Opposite page, top: The great room’s living area, with Ethan Allen sofas and a Safavieh rug, was designed for maximum comfort. A combination of sheer and blackout curtains (from The Shade Store) allows for full or filtered daylight—or none at all. Opposite page, bottom: The architect tempered modern exterior elements, such as towering glass walls, with traditional details like an oriel window and clapboard siding; he calls his design “a traditional twist on a modern house.” The outdoor living room ceiling also serves as a balcony for the master bedroom.

such as a line of horizontal trim that leads the eye downward and the use of shiplap above it, which provides a series of shadow lines to break up the ceiling space. Adding warmth, quite literally, is a two-sided gas fireplace, one side facing the bedroom and the other the master bathroom, where it complements a clean, modern design featuring a floating vanity and a mirrored wall. D’Agostino designed the bedroom’s eastfacing window so that it would frame the sunrise, in keeping with the home’s “staycation” theme. “We both wish we could stay in that area of the house forever,” he says. (It’s a desire given a java jolt by the bedroom’s built-in coffee bar.) Another intimate space is the loft, which overlooks the great room and functions as D’Agostino’s office. But it also was deliberately designed to accommodate the kind of all-inthe-family living he and his wife crave. In front of his desk is a comfortable sofa for his wife and kids, so, he says, “I can be working on a house design while my family is watching Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood and getting ready to go to sleep.” The family draws a clear line between cozy and cluttered. “We’re neat freaks,” Andrea D’Agostino admits. So the design makes use of multiple built-ins, including a long cabinet adjacent to the floating stairway, to hide the detritus of

daily living. D’Agostino tucked a large pantry area behind the kitchen wall to keep food-prep messes out of sight. “The downside of living in a house with an openconcept first floor,” he says, “is that if you don’t plan for it, your house is going to look cluttered.” The D’Agostinos’ home looks anything but. The built-ins, the glass walls and the open-concept first floor all create a distinctly modern feel, which is balanced by more traditional elements like a coffered ceiling in the great room, the shiplap in the master bedroom and an exterior that evokes New England by way of the Hamptons. In fact, says D’Agostino, from the floor plan, the house looks like something that was designed to sit on a cliff in California overlooking the ocean. But Washington Township isn’t Monterey, so D’Agostino designed a house that would make sense in its environment. On the exterior, the two-story glass walls contrast with traditional touches such as an oriel bay window—more commonly seen on Tudor Revival homes— and a roofline featuring three peaks, which, D’Agostino says, “ties everything together.” In fact, what really ties the house together is joy: the joy of living next door to your best friend, in rooms specifically designed for the whole family, in a house by turns dramatic and homey—the perfect place, as it happens, for a vacation that never ends.

An addition from 1990 looks nothing like it used to, thanks to new hardwood floors and furnishings. Terri Fiori of Fiori Interior Design in Wyckoff mixed different wood and metal finishes to give the room a collected look. “When everything is the same, it just looks really flat,” she says. “Mixing finishes brings life into a room and makes it sing.”

Lisa Balsam had hated the way her den looked almost from the minute she and her husband, Bruce, created the room as part of an addition to their Tenafly colonial in 1990. “It was decorated in kind of a modern way, and it didn’t match the rest of the house, which was more traditional,” she remembers. “It was really awful. Clearly, I should never decorate on my own.” But it wasn’t until a few years ago, when Balsam broke her ankle and was stuck in the house for weeks, that she finally decided to do something about it. “I said, ‘Enough with this den.’ So I started looking for decorators.” Enter Terri Fiori of Fiori Interior Design in Wyckoff, who was tasked with bringing the space into the 21st century. “It’s a very traditional-style home, but the addition was out of the ’80s. It didn’t blend well, so I wanted to design that room to be more transitional,” she says. First Fiori eliminated the skylights, wall-to-wall carpet, track lighting and a wall of built-in shelves, which were overflowing with collectibles. She and Balsam edited the tchotchkes and put what remained in a new mirrored-back cabinet from Old Biscayne Designs in a greige metallic finish that now anchors the room. Balsam’s favorite thing about the new design is the bluish-green chaise lounge that sits in a cozy corner with a faux tortoise-shelltopped end table. “I love to sit and read on the chaise and look out on the greenery in the backyard,” she says. “It’s a peaceful, calming room.” Fiori also redid the powder room, suggesting the Balsams steal about a foot of space from the den to enlarge it just enough for a bigger sink. Next she added wainscoting, glazed the ceiling in a copper color, hung taupe linen wallpaper and installed mosaic tile on the floor in similar shades. Balsam especially loves the teardrop glass chandelier. “The room is small, but Terri said she’d make a little jewel box out of it, and she did,” she says. Yes, Balsam waited years to tackle the addition, but now she’s on a roll. “Terri ended up redoing the whole first floor,” she says. “And maybe next year I’m going to have her do my master bedroom.”

This page: “I thought the powder room had to be white because it’s so small,” says homeowner Lisa Balsam, “but Terri taught me that you can use darker colors in a small space and have it work. I love the way this room turned out. It’s so elegant!”Opposite page: The antique silver finish on the floral prints’ frame in the reading nook reflects light, explains Fiori, and the artwork adds a touch of purple and violet, which she also used on pillows throughout the room. The unique floor lamp is by Visual Comfort. “We tried to add a little juxtaposition to the more traditional elements in the room, so it’s a little more modern and sleek,” she says.

This Kinnelon home’s modern kitchen is designed for a family that loves to entertain. “They wanted a nice white, bright, clean place where they could host all their family and friends,” says designer Sharon L. Sherman. Dark wood flooring used throughout the rest of the house adds contrast when carried into the white kitchen.

When your house is the one family and friends come to for holidays, summer get-togethers and a host of other social occasions, a dark, traditional kitchen with a two-level island just won’t cut it. So when a Kinnelon couple wanted a lighter, brighter, more open space to better host their many guests, they sought out the help of Sharon L. Sherman, designer at Thyme & Place Design in Wyckoff. “They have a big family and are big party people,” says Sherman of the homeowners and their three college-aged kids. “We designed the kitchen to accommodate large parties.” That meant leveling out the existing island for more surface space and putting show-stopping white quartz Viatera countertops from Stone Surfaces in its place. The new wet bar area, one of the homeowners’ requests, features a second sink with a Delta Trinsic faucet. The lady of the house also wanted dark accents to counteract the stark white, so Sherman chose black light fixtures from Visual Comfort and completed the look with complementary gray porcelain subway tile. The whole renovation took about six weeks start to finish. “They had leaky skylights so we had to replace those,” Sherman adds. “It was pretty involved.” It was worth it to create a truly party-worthy kitchen. The final result? Just plain pretty.

This page, right: Above the wet bar, Sherman chose glass-door cabinets by Greenfield Cabinetry, as they’re lit from within and add brightness to an interior kitchen. Opposite page, top: One of the kitchen’s most unusual features is its Viking French-door wall oven. “She’s petite, and a regular wall oven is hard [to open] for people who are not supertall,” Sherman says. charm of the classic farmhouse style with its fireplaces, wood moldings and reclaimed wide plank floors. “Its bones are beautiful,” says Wolf, who designed all of the spacious home’s rooms. “We just needed to create a sense of modern flow by opening up the space and injecting bold pops of color, patterns and art throughout.” The home abounds with custom touches, unique pieces and interesting juxtapositions of styles unified by thematic use of a refined color palette, design elements, textures and materials. “We’d worked with Karen on our beach home and our old home, so she knew what we’d like,” the wife explains. “Instead of giving us lots of choices, she narrows things down to two or three options that capture both of our different styles to create a cohesive consistency.” Seamless symmetry flows throughout the welcoming home. Greeting visitors, the airy central foyer is flanked

A transformation was required in Livingston—and a deft blending too. A young professional couple’s new home, a traditional Pennsylvania Dutch farmhousestyle construction, had to be designed to reflect their modern sensibilities. And actually, those sensibilities differed. The husband, the more design-conscious risk taker of the pair, wanted bold colors and graffiti- and Pop-type art. The wife, who favors muted palettes, layered textures and architectural elements, was more focused on ensuring warmth and comfort. Designer Karen B. Wolf ’s mission was to marry the two aesthetics seamlessly. Working in conjunction with Rosen Kelly Conway Architecture & Design in Summit and John Santos of Fortis Developers in Elizabeth, Wolf and her team had to make the home for both spouses—and for their children, ages 8, 6 and 4. The new house, built to look older, featured all the

curated decorative shelf items, all personally styled by Wolf. “We brought in every single piece in this room,” Wolf emphasizes. “The only exception was the bulldog in cast bronze metal. That was theirs. At first glance it seems out of place, but it works. It adds an unexpected, fun element.” In the great room, Wolf ensured visual interest with pops of color. She handpicked every object on the large gold metallic coffee table with an eye for overall flow, symmetry and color choices drawn from the large abstract painting by French artist JM Robert (a find of Wolf ’s, which the owners loved). The fireplace—framed in rich Calcutta white marble with black streaks—was painted an almost-black navy blue, which was complemented by the navy-and-white patterned drapes on either side. The authentic rustic wood floors were given new life with a custom mix of warm brown shades. Joining form with function, deep blue velvet sofas invite a visitor to sink into luxurious comfort. This sense of relaxed sophistication extends to the kitchen, which features the same Calcutta marble used for the great room’s fireplace and other unifying brass and leather elements, such as those used for the metal hood and island stools. Custom touches include the wood cabinetry and appliance-covering surfaces painted in soft gray. The large wood island, in an oil-based black stained with a matte finish, imparts a warm, natural feel while the shiplap ceiling and the X-shaped designs on each side of the island reinforce the home’s farmhouse roots. Nearby, an intimate family room beckons. It’s cozy and comfy, but far from conventional, thanks to plush leather lounging chairs, a custom-textured ottoman and a brick fireplace totally revamped with metal sheet plates and adorned with a classic masterpiece given a graffiti-type twist. Room by room, piece by piece, this livable showplace became a home where its inhabitants—young children included—can enjoy and celebrate the art of life. Instead of a “do not touch” museum quality, the vibe is of inviting spaces imprinted with the family’s immersive perspective of beauty, warmth and comfort. “We love working with Karen,” says the husband. “She captures a consistent flow in a house with different tastes and unique elements to create a home that’s livable and has our distinctive stamp.”

by a dramatic dining room on one side and an equally impressive library on the other. “Since they’re the first things people encounter, we wanted both to make ‘wow’ statements,” says Wolf. “We wanted them to ‘talk’ to each other, so both rooms are a complementary mix of classic design elements given sleek, modern aesthetics.” “We love to entertain, and this room lets us do it in style,” the husband says of the dining area. “It’s a fun and elegant space. We particularly love the ceiling and the live edge wood table.” Wolf designed the millwork ceiling— painted a semi-gloss black for maximum effect—to showcase the glittery brass and glass Sputnik chandeliers. The ambience-setting smoky glow enhances the luster of the Jonathan Adler chairs, which were reupholstered in a textured metallic vinyl that is as visually arresting as it is easy to clean and maintain. The two semi-custom end chairs upholstered in black leather with brass nail heads add to the air of polished posh. The custom live edge wood table, supported by a brass base, is topped with agate candlesticks from John-Richard. On the floor, a custom hide rug in a geometric pattern offers practical elegance. “I love using real hide,” Wolf says. “It’s natural and durable, hides dirt and gives warmth.” A striking mixed-media portrait of Kate Moss by the artist Mr. Brainwash enlivens the white fireplace. And the walls—bedecked in metallic grasscloth by Phillip Jeffries—do “talk,” speaking volumes about the room’s opulence. That same air of contemporary elegance permeates the stylish library, a study in dramatic contrasts. Underscoring the room’s traditional millwork and architectural features, the backs of the pre-existing bookshelves were given high-gloss coats of black paint while the sides and shelves were left white. This blackand-white color story was punctuated with custom details, such as the furniture’s patterned upholstery, the hide area rug and the white sateen drapes with black velvet drops. To keep these components from overpowering the room, all other millwork was washed in neutral white. Unifying elements carried from room to room were evident in the metal coffee table, the pair of Sputnik table lamps, the sleek Regina Andrew light fixture, the Gabby mirror, the Ambella sofa and the carefully

follow your path Hanging a sign on your property that reads “keep off grass” is just plain rude, but luckily there’s a more visually appealing (and less aggressive) way to prevent visitors from trampling on your lawn—with a gravel walkway. Gardens throughout Europe and Asia typically have gravel or pebbled paths and it’s no wonder, as they add character and whimsy, not to mention convenience, to grassy areas. If you’re handy you could lay a gravel path yourself— you only have to dig down a few inches to make room for the pebbles—or hire a professional like Haledonbased Braen Stone, which can implement a unique mosaic pattern of your choosing. Either way, this low-maintenance winding path will undeniably enhance your outdoor living space.
