Fine Art Gallery & Interior Design Services BLAIRSDEN MANSION

The Atrium—with its beautifully molded details, illuminated ceiling grid, and double-column appointed corners that offer open space to long, wide hallways—almost makes us forget that it is a room without windows. With this thought to inspire, I imagined the upstairs space as a private gallery in the round and family retreat. For this area, I referenced my experience with homes over 20,000 square feet, as well as my visits to the world's greatest museums, where I studied how art is meant to be viewed: beyond white walls, in rooms filled with quality and devoid of pretension. To me, definitions of home and interior design as a discipline involve the same principles as those that guide art: to learn about and serve tribute to the great beauty of the past while interpreting it in a way to make it of our times--to make it relevant and to speak to our common souls. To me, this room symbolizes a space in which the art collector can spend a lifetime of Sunday mornings. It's where one can pause and discover intimate truths of one's life, reflect in this secure and quiet space, and truly connect with loved ones in a room dedicated to beauty and the arts. Art, after all, is a great means to transport us beyond our daily struggles and remind us of something greater and bigger to inspire.

Garbar, Esq., focuses primarily on the tough events businesses face, and utilizes his 25 years of hands-on experience to obtain the best outcome for our clients. memo

Editor in Chief RITA GUARNA

home matters most

“You don’t know what you’ve got till it’s gone...” Joni Mitchell’s lyrics ring in my ears as I sit at home at my work computer for the eighth straight week. It’s one thing to have an option to work from home; it’s another to have to work from home. And who hasn’t had to cancel dinner plans due to a scheduling conflict? But having to postpone because the restaurant is shut down—well, that’s novel. In the past two months, I’ve seen colleagues cancel weddings and vacations. Watched as others talked of remote learning for their kids and begged loved ones not to check their 401(k)s as I was tempted to peek at my own. (In the end, I was too chicken.) Longtime New Jerseyans are no strangers to crisis. I recall working with colleagues around a U-shaped table near a specially transported computer server at the Park Ridge Marriott back when Superstorm Sandy hit. We’ve had our share of storms, blackouts and gasoline

rationing. But this is different: COVID-19 has changed everything. Well, almost everything. Happily, what isn’t different is our response as a community. I’ve seen friends and acquaintances share information and supplies. We’ve offered to pick up medicine for elderly neighbors and run errands for those in self-quarantine. Of course, there’s a great deal of stress and anxiety. When will the economy recover? When will we return to normal? As we go to press, New Jersey has nearly 134,000 reported cases of the virus, with several hundred presumptive positives. As a quarterly publication, we prepare articles long before you read them; thus this issue was conceived as the major U.S. outbreak was beginning. But in a way, perhaps the timing is fitting. Now that most of us are home working and nesting, we see the importance of home—and the way it reflects who we are—as never before. Take, for example, a Passaic County physician’s new townhouse. A hectic schedule prevented the good doctor from decorating the space himself, so he shared his list of preferences with interior designer Pam Cooper, whom he entrusted with making the space his home. See and read about the project in “Doctor’s Orders” on page 36. Then turn to “Chef ’s Choice” on page 62 to read about celebrity chef Josh Capon’s new-construction home in Bergen County. To make the space “theirs,” Capon and his wife asked designer and longtime friend Jill Raskin to use modern décor and create a feeling that’s warm and welcoming for visiting family and friends. That is, of course, when it’s safe again for us to entertain. This is an unprecedented time, for sure. My hope is that we’ll come out of it stronger and more grateful for what we’ve “got,” and that it’s not really “gone,” just postponed.

WHAT’S UP, WHAT’S NEW AND WHAT TO DO.

PRETTY PARTNERSHIP

A WALL OF ART

You could take a piece of original artwork, frame it and hang it on your wall—or you could turn it into wallpaper. The latter is the novel idea behind The Vale London, a textile company where drawings (and paintings) are created by hand and then transformed into wallcoverings. After the founder, artist Melinda Marquardt, draws or paints with anything from ink to watercolors, she then scans the designs through Photoshop and creates different motifs for fabric and wallpaper. Bonus: Marquardt’s sketches are inspired by her world travels, so the Vale would be the perfect complementary “pop” in a room featuring trinkets found around the globe on your vacations. You can view some of the stunning samples at the Fabricut Showroom in New York City at 979 Third Ave.

Call it the meeting of two big-box brands: Madewell (in fashion) and Parachute (in home goods). Madewell x Parachute is a new line of soft linens and “sleepfriendly styles” that make getting out of bed even harder than it has been throughout the entire quarantine. The comfy collaboration features pajama sets, of course, but we’re all about the pillow shams, sheets and duvet covers. There’s even a denim dog bed so that Fido doesn’t feel left out. Shop the collection at either brand’s website: madewell.com or parachutehome.com.

TRANSPARENCY IN THE TUB

NJHome

| 15

Make sure the lock on the master bathroom door is working, because you’re going to want some serious privacy after you install this stunning see-through bathtub. Created by Italian luxury brand Antonio Lupi Design, Reflex, as the tub is named, is made from a colored resin material called Cristalmood. The freestanding, oval-shaped transparent stunner allows one to see through the material to the water—and the bather. With 10 stunning colors from which to choose, it’s 66 inches of pure bathtime bliss.

REDESIGN, RESCHEDULED

HOT IN THE KITCHEN

16

| NJHome

Leave it to high-end kitchen appliance manufacturer Dacor to hit on the major kitchen trends with its revamped Modernist Collection. For homeowners who appreciate a sleek appearance, the line of ranges, ovens, hoods and more is designed in dramatic graphite-colored stainless steel for a look that stands out while blending in with the rest of the décor. Dacor also integrates cutting-edge technology in each appliance: a “knobless” range with a 7-inch touchscreen and steamroasting and -baking capabilities, a push-open refrigerator with 3D LED lighting and dual door-mounted cameras and a 100-bottle “wine cellar” chiller with three independently cooled zones, to name a few. Your home may have a home theater, but these appliances put on a show in the kitchen.

Normally the home design industry has several key events at which its work and wares are showcased. This year, COVID-19 has changed the calendar a bit, but these shows—postponed from earlier dates—are still upcoming: • Architectural Digest Design Show. This huge trade show at Pier 94 in New York has been moved from its original March date to June 25–28. Over those four days, hundreds of companies in the furniture, lighting, art, textile and kitchen/bath realms will display their work to industry leaders, including interior decorators, marketers and editors from Architectural Digest. See who will be there and more at addesignshow.com. • Mansion in May has become Splendor in September. The fundraising exhibition held at a historical mansion in Morristown has been moved to the fall for 2020—and renamed. But it preserves the event’s tradition, celebrating the chosen venue’s ornate gardens, stunning interiors and beautiful architecture. It will take place Sept. 8 through Oct. 4 at the same location as originally planned: Tyvan Hill in New Vernon. Go to mansioninmay.org for more details.

LUST FOR LEAF

Don’t wait for fall to enjoy the foliage—there’s no better time than now to welcome all things leafy into your home. One of the top trends of the season, leaf-inspired products are springing up in a variety of décor, from accent pieces to statement furniture to durable outdoor equipment. Below is a checklist of our favorite items. What’s on your list? • The ceramic Rosalba stool is handmade and designed with an open leaf pattern that creates an artistic light-and-shadow design. Available at madegoods.com. • Add a little French Polynesia to your home with Walker Zanger’s rectangular, matte-finish Tahiti tiles, which can bring any shower or accent wall to life. Check walkerzanger.com. • You’ll almost feel a warm Hawaiian breeze when you illuminate your room with the ocean palm floor lamp by Fred Segal. The best part: This brass-finished piece won’t drop any coconuts! Available at cb2.com. • Forget about scooping these leaves from your pool. Fun Boy’s tropical jungle tube float includes a leafy design that is screen-printed by hand and a cup holder to secure your Mai Tai and piña colada. Get one at funboy.com. • Save looseleaf paper for the students and draft your letters using stationery and notecards featuring MartiGambaArt’s monstera leaf motif. The design is based on the artist’s original silk watercolor. Available at zazzle.com.

MUST-READS SMART BULBS, BRIGHT IDEAS

Modern lightbulbs are doing much more than Thomas Edison envisioned, but surely the New Jersey inventor would approve. Today’s smart bulbs are not only energy-efficient; many also have built-in timers, the ability to change colors and the ever-important Bluetooth technology. Here are three of the top consumer smart bulb lines available today: • Philips Hue: This LED light (above) offers 16 million shades that can be changed and controlled through a smartphone app or voice command. Built-in settings mimic candlelight, fireplace, sunset and more. • Wyze: Putting the “smart” in smart technology, this bulb can be programmed to activate when it detects motion like the opening or closing of a door. Voice commands can adjust brightness and color. • LIFX: Let there be light—and plenty of it! Engineers suggest that this bulb has a range of 1 trillion custom colors and, like your smartphone, it can be programmed to activate when you receive a call or email.

HOME DÉCOR, KELLY STYLE

You don’t have to be a reality TV fan to enjoy Novogratz Design Fix: Chic and Stylish Tips for Every Decorating Scenario (Rizzoli, $45), the new book by interior designers and HGTV stars Cortney and Robert Novogratz. Their laidback style has earned tens of thousands of fans on social media, and they provide plenty of advice (decorating a small space, incorporating bold colors, furnishing a short-term rental) in this rewarding tome. A page-turner is ideal for oceanside reading, but writer and swimmer Lou Stoppard’s Pools: Lounging, Diving, Floating, Dreaming: Picturing Life at the Swimming Pool (Rizzoli, $65), is perfect anywhere. The full-color photo book celebrates the joy of pools, from splashing and diving into water to lounging and modeling on the adjacent decks. Before your next soak, be sure to dip into these pages. For the ultimate in outdoor inspiration, flip through the pages of Chasing Eden (Workman, $35) by Jack Staub and Renny Reynolds. The design and gardening gurus take readers on an exclusive tour of Pennsylvania’s Hortulus Farm, one of the country’s most celebrated private gardens. The tome showcases every acre of the estate, from its plant palette and breathtaking vistas to its water features and garden décor—all elements you can incorporate into your yard.

If “French country” is how you’d define your home’s aesthetic—or it’s the vibe you’re going for—Kelly Clarkson has you covered. The singer-turned-talk-show-host-turnedentrepreneur has become Wayfair’s first-ever brand ambassador and has curated a line of furniture and home décor for the retailer aptly called Kelly Clarkson Home. Inspired by her south Texas roots, the feminine collection blends the boho chic and farmhouse styles with vintage-inspired finishing touches. Think along the lines of tufted sofas, crystal light fixtures, wooden side tables and brass accessories. View the entire (affordable) collection at wayfair.com.

SLEEK TEAK

Inexpensive plastic patio chairs help in a pinch, but every outdoor entertainment area needs a foundation of elegant lounge and dining furniture. Happily, there’s the Rock Garden Collection, a collaboration between luxury outdoor furniture company Janus et Cie and renowned Hong Kong-based architect André Fu. It’s a line of stylish and durable tables, chairs, modular chairs, stools and more, each made from teak hardwood and finished in a modern driftwood/smoke color. Some pieces include other fine materials—the Round 90 dining table, for example, incorporates Alabama ceramic, while the double chaise features 100 percent recyclable and stain-resistant fiber in its cushions. The result is a product line that combines outdoor high style with the spirituality of a Zen garden.

Spend Summer in Style at DOWN TO EARTH LIVING For 50 years, Down to Earth has been offering the area’s best selection of high-quality outdoor furniture at affordable prices, an award-winning assortment of home décor, and an incredible garden center and nursery filled with everything you need to turn your home into your oasis!

YOU’RE APPED TO LOVE THIS

Want to envision how a specific paint color, tile or wallpaper would look in your room before committing to it? Now there’s an app for that. Launched in April (coincidentally during the COVID-19 pandemic, when it came in more handy than ever), Primer is an augmented reality app that helps you visualize interior design ideas in your home—without your having to trek out to a showroom. But Primer does more than just have you upload a photo and digitally try out different styles. The app uses your phone’s camera to scan a room in real time and, with just a few taps, lets you change the size of a swatch and swap out colors and patterns within the space you’re looking to update. It then takes you directly to a partner website to purchase the product once you figure out what you’d like. Best yet, the app accounts for things like shadows and fluctuations in light throughout the day. That’s as realistic as it gets, folks.

GIVING BACK DURING COVID-19

DESIGN GOES DIGITAL

Healthcare workers have been laboring harder than ever to fight this pandemic, and almost everyone has been helping out however they can, from restaurants donating food to daycare centers remaining open to help essential workers out with childcare. Many home design brands are getting in on the action too, with some pledging money toward COVID-19 relief and others donating protective masks made on their own turf. Here’s an overview of who’s doing what: • Fabricut, Baker Furniture, Matouk, Schumacher, MacKenzie-Childs and Sutherland Furniture are among those who have converted their factories to produce machine-washable masks and/or isolation gowns in high-quality materials for medical workers and first responders. The personal protective equipment is then either distributed locally near the companies’ headquarters or donated to hospitals in some of the hardest-hit cities, such as New York and Washington, D.C. • Others are making monetary donations. The Ralph Lauren Foundation has given $10 million to COVID-19 relief, and New Jersey-based Benjamin Moore is paying participants’ costs for the Painting Contractors Association’s online conference, which provides tips and resources for professional painters facing declines in business due to COVID-19.

If you’re working on a larger scale redesign or reno and need more personalized attention than an app can provide, digital design services are what you’re in the market for. Amid COVID-19 and social distancing regulations, more and more interior designers are offering these online-only services to their clients, services with which they essentially do their job digitally from start to finish. So, how does it work? Some firms have clients submit pictures and measurements of the rooms they want to redesign, and in return they send back product suggestions and/or even rendered drawings of their ideas for the space. The designers also book some video meetings throughout the process, so there is still one-on-one interaction between the pro and the client. The bad news? Homeowners who go this route need to be comfortable with doing the bulk of the legwork, from shopping for products to assembling furniture. But on the plus side, online-only services are more affordable. Companies such as West Elm and the Italian linen brand Frette are starting up their own virtual design studios too, where customers can speak via video, phone, email or online chat with specialists who can help them reimagine their living space. Most of these services are free, but the caveat is that you definitely won’t develop the same level of trust or rapport you would with an individual designer.

The custom live-edge coffee table isn’t the only conversation piece in this Passaic County brownstone. Symmetry creates the illusion that the pattern of the rear wall continues undisturbed behind the closed stairs.

Doctors are known for having exacting standards, for themselves and others. If they didn’t, they would have chosen an easier line of work, right? Still, Pam Cooper, owner of Watchung-based Cooper Interiors, wasn’t a bit intimidated when a young physician hired her to design his newly constructed Georgian brownstone townhouse in Passaic County. In fact, she jumped at the opportunity to decorate the threelevel, 2,100-square-foot space—despite receiving little direction from the good doctor. “He did not have time to collaborate due to his hectic schedule,” Cooper recalls, noting that the homeowner’s sole instruction to her was to incorporate grays and blacks while maintaining a welcoming environment. Though he was a single man, he wanted a fun and inviting space to entertain family and friends. “He gave me the keys and said he’d like to move in within two months. I feel that since he gave me full rein, it put more pressure on me to deliver a product I was confident he would love.” She started with the home’s focal point, the main level on the second

floor. “It’s one open space,” Cooper says, “so my challenge was to connect it visually while defining individual spaces.” Creating a comfortable setting in the living area was a priority, as her client often kicks back with friends for Sunday afternoon games. This meant mounting a TV on the wall, but it couldn’t be any flat, ordinary surface. “I designed a plank wall to give a visual feature point while warming up the space with handpicked stain colors,” she says. Cooper carried the color and comfort theme throughout the living area, using gray and brown stain on the natural wood floor and furnishing with a pair of distressed leather armchairs as well as a plush couch by Bassett. She added more optical appeal with a live-edge coffee table handmade at Freehold-based Ingrained Custom Cabinetry. “They FaceTimed me while they were at the wood-slab lumber yard, and I picked out the species and shape of the wood,” the designer says. “This is a beautiful walnut slab.” During commercial breaks in the living room, the homeowner’s guests can appreciate another of Cooper’s design achievements: the staircase wall.

This page, right: Interior designer Pam Cooper selected onyx gray for the ceiling of this bathroom as well as graphic wallpaper and Rat Pack-inspired prints for the walls. “I love to amp up the drama in a powder room knowing that every guest will use the space,” she says. Opposite page: To create a rustic industrial feel, Cooper covered the wood floor with a thick black-and-gray rug by Safavieh and installed an updated midcentury mixed-metal light fixture on the ceiling. Another notable piece of décor rests on the Dovetail media console: The designer added an oversized piece of coral on a glass base as a nod to the homeowner’s love of the beach.

“I designed a paneled feature on the upper and lower staircase walls to draw the eye to the back of the room and create depth and space,” she says. “It was a mathematical feat for my master carpenter, Barry Pitchford of Jud Bar Construction, to lay out the grids so it looks as if it is one continuous wall.” When the game ends, entertaining moves to the kitchen. Cooper had two things in mind when she planned this space: It should be conducive to the ebb and flow of larger gatherings, but also feel intimate when the homeowner wanted to unwind after a busy day treating patients. In the middle is an 8-foot island topped with a minimal-design, durable gray quartz counter. It provides the majority of the kitchen’s surface area for food prep and serving, while doubling as a comfortable sitting area to enjoy morning coffee and read the day’s top stories. The color marries well with the stainless-steel appliances, wood-veneer, Shaker-style cabinets and ivory subway tile backsplash. The kitchen expands beyond the adjacent dining area, which is furnished with a handsome live-edge table from Home Trends and six black leather chairs by Nuevo. Behind the table, Cooper created a dry bar for her bachelor client. “This was a blank wall, and I wanted to extend the kitchen to allow for a wine fridge, wine storage and a coffee bar,” Cooper says. “This was the ideal area, since

counter space is limited in the kitchen.” Three floating shelves provide storage and are fixed to a custom-designed wall that matches the one in the living room. “We decided to marry the rooms by incorporating the plank wall in both the living room and over the dry bar area that we created,” she says. “Visually this ties the two spaces together.” The designer gave the lower level family room a man-cave vibe and embraced earth tones when selecting and designing pieces. She created a rustic and “manly” bookcase to frame the homeowner’s new 58-inch television, which was mounted on another textured wall. “I decided stone would be a nice natural contrast against the wood-stained bookcase.” The client’s penchant for lounging came into play when Cooper selected furniture and accents. “Masculine rooms are ideally about all-around comfort,” she notes. “Part rustic and part modern, there is a delicate balance in the theme. We chose comfortable, deep furniture and a leather ottoman that he can put his feet on or use as extra seating.”

The living room does showcase a piece of the doctor’s softer side— framed shells on a neutral linen canvas adorn one of the walls. “One of the things the homeowner told me was that he loved the beach, so I snuck in a couple of items that nod to that feel without being the traditional pastel color theme.” The same masculine-yet-sophisticated theme is carried into the third-floor master bedroom. The bed features a black worn-leather headboard with brass trim, a color combo replicated in two nightstands and a light fixture. “I love to mix metals, and this was the perfect combination of iron frame and hardware with hand-applied antique brass powder-coat finish,” Cooper says of the accent pieces. For added visual interest, she covered the wall behind the headboard with a gray and black earthy grasscloth wallpaper. “I like when there is a common thread to the home,” she adds. And she did more than that, the homeowner notes. “Pam certainly delivered the wow factor,” he says.

Homeowners Anthony and Carolyn Buoscio and their four teenage kids loved vacationing on the Jersey Shore in the family-oriented town of Lavallette. While renting various houses, they dreamed of the day when they’d buy their own little piece of beach heaven. One of their rentals—the property of interior designer Miriam Silver Verga, who co-owns the Westfield-based Mimi & Hill with Hillary Kaplan—felt particularly homey and served as inspiration. “Carolyn would always say, ‘When I get a beach house I want you to design it,’” says Silver Verga, who notes that they were all already friends from Westfield, where the Buoscios have their primary home. “We were the first phone call after they got the house.” The homeowners, whose main residence is a five-bedroom, 4.5-bathroom Dutch colonial, were excited to create a completely different look and feel for their getaway haven. “I think with a second home you can

The clean, utilitarian lines of the new oak-top dining table with an airy Lucite bottom are the perfect fit for the coastal-casual style. Sidestepping the need for space-hogging chair legs, a backless bench runs along the length of one side of the table to squeeze in visiting cousins in close comfort. More guests? No problem! ing spot. “Miriam and Hillary surprised me with a bright orange lobster wallpaper,” says Carolyn. “When you enter, it gives the house a bold pop of color, which continues throughout the entire first floor.” Before the project, the walls were bland and boring. Space, a premium for a large family that loves to entertain, was not being used to maximum advantage. For instance, a kitchen peninsula ran through the middle of the first floor, creating a structural and sight obstacle. “Miriam and Hillary had the vision to cut the peninsula down and create an island, clearing space for a dining table,” says Carolyn. “It was a wonderful investment to make that change upfront, because it opened up so many options for function and design.” The new dining space now flows freely into the main floor’s multipurpose living area. Rather than feeling cramped and cluttered, this 25-by-30 communal hub is comfortable and cozy, offering various points

rug from West Elm that subtly punctuates the pink, gray and tangerine shades so artfully interwoven throughout the house. Family togetherness is priceless, but so is some alone time. The firstfloor guest bedroom gives the grandparents a private space they can retreat to when the grandkids get too rambunctious. Along with a queensized bed, the room features a wall-mounted TV and a loveseat sofa. In keeping with the bedroom’s soothing minimalism, airy shelves hung on the wall on either side of the bed serve as substitutes for bulky nightstands, providing safe, unobstructed paths to the adjoining bathroom; attractive Ro Sham Beaux sconces impart ample lighting to help avoid things that go bump in the night. For the upstairs bedrooms, the designers kept things bright, bold and breezy. The boys’ room shines with a lighthearted, sunny spirit in beachy blues and tans, and a playful multicolored surfboard border. The girls’

room is crisp and preppy, with raspberry and pink bedding and coral wallpaper, all by Serena & Lily. “I love that the house feels bright and happy, and that it accommodates our extended family,” says Carolyn. “Our parents take the downstairs bedroom with full bath; our sisters and their kids fit comfortably in queen, bunk and trundle beds upstairs. Everyone has a comfortable space to sleep, and there are several extra areas that Miriam and Hillary carved out for living.” Nowhere is creative use of space more evident than in the garageturned-rec room. While the main house’s design might be the domain of the lady of the house, in the garage the man of the manor’s vision rules. He wanted a space that celebrated his love for all things Americana and Jersey Shore yet wouldn’t deviate too much from the rest of the home’s look and feel. He pictured the two-car garage with glass-paneled roll-up

This Bay Head colonial’s radiant color story comes to life in the living room with a brilliant blend of blues and greens, seen in the turquoise couch with its floral chintz pillows, the Eileen Gray vintage chairs topped with playful plaid and the gossamerblue walls. Inspiration came from Lilly Pulitzer’s bright resort styles accentuated with dove white. The red brick fireplace was transformed into a mix of seafoam-green-and-blue handmade tiles with seashell highlights—so beachy! Other elements are the woven-grass Roman blinds, the wooden chest coffee table and the arabesque pattern broadloom rug in pale green and ivory over an oak floor.

Clouds may shroud the sky in gloom and rain pummel the sand, but for one large family the atmosphere is still bright and cheery. Their Bay Head beach house was designed that way, with a harmonious flow of blues, greens and corals that evoke the Atlantic even on days best spent indoors. Every weekend in a normal summertime, the eight-bedroom sanctuary across from the beach is bursting with activity, a good sign that the renovation designed by Kingsley Knauss of Westfield-based KBK Interior Design has met its mark. Because although this cedar-shingle-style colonial is an eclectic, three-story mix of vintage and traditional furnishings and Knauss saw to every detail, the real test was family. “We have a big family,” says homeowner Eileen, a mother of five grown children and a grandmother too. “The house has to work aesthetically, but also practically.” So it wasn’t enough for the heart of the home—the kitchen—to be pictureperfect with its impressive pale-turquoise island topped with light-gray quartzite and teamed up for contrast with Redford House woven-rattan gray stools over quarter sawn oak floors. Nor could the family be satisfied with the intriguing way the backsplash of blue-and-green rectangular glass plays against the bright-white custom cabinetry. This kitchen had to serve a crowd buffet style from its island and have a dining table nearby that could expand when the troops came marching in. And while some might have no use for a family room, a sitting room and a sunroom, the three clusters of seating fit this family’s style of entertaining, with enough space to always have a table with a puzzle in progress. “We’re a very big puzzle family,” Eileen says. “Pretty much all summer long, there’s a puzzle.” It might have been a big challenge for just any designer, but Eileen and her husband Bill had worked with Knauss This page: For the sunroom, designer Kingsley Knauss turned her palette up a notch, choosing turquoise walls, a pistachio side table, jade-green slate with a striped rag rug and blue-and-green custom pillows with fabrics from Lee Jofa’s Lilly Pulitzer Collection. A combo of new and vintage furniture, such as the restored rattan chairs, is charmingly cozy, and the metal-rope-framed glass table offers plenty of space for this family’s puzzle passion. Linen café curtains with a Kravet seagull print provide light and privacy. Opposite page: A paler version of turquoise finds its way into the kitchen in the custom island base, accentuated with a light gray quartzite top and Redford House stools with woven rattan seats. Following an artistic pattern Knauss spread throughout the home, white in the custom cabinets goes hand in hand with a color burst in the blue-and-green glass-tile backsplash. Completing the picture are a gray geometric rug over quarter-sawn oak and drum-shade pewter-and-brass pendants from Visual Comfort.

This page, left: What says seashore like coral, another rich hue the designer tapped into for a bright path to the master-bedroom suite? “The hallway is predominantly a built-in dresser and decorative wood trim,” says Knauss. So she used a coral ceiling and clovershaped lights from Visual Comfort to make the transition to the chromatic bedroom. This page, right: The coraland-red floral headboard inspired the vivid theme in the master bedroom and contributes to its bohemian vibe, together with the wicker fan blades and honey-tone furniture, says Knauss. Coral also makes a statement in the pillows on the Somerset Bay king-sized bed and full-length draperies that stand out against off-white walls. Opposite page: The main-floor powder room goes nautical with blue for the walls, a theme that is picked up in the tailored valence’s rope stitching. The custom vanity’s jade stone countertop is a playful match with the geometric-patterned floor, also in jade, but Eileen’s favorite is probably the lath ceiling that, she says, “almost looks like you’re gazing up through lattice at the sky.”

couch with floral chintz pillows teams up nicely with Eileen Gray vintage chairs and their plaid cushions against a gossamer-blue-wall backdrop accentuated with dove-white trim and furniture. The once-brick fireplace is what Eileen calls “clever” in its mix of handmade, seafoam-green-and-blue tiles with seashell accents coupled with panels and decorative sconces. An arabesque rug in pale green and ivory ties it all together over a quarter-sawn oak floor. Knauss took a little more “risk” in the sunroom with rich turquoise walls, a pistachio side table with a turquoise lamp and blue-and-green custom pillows in Lee Jofa fabrics from the Lilly Pulitzer Collection for the furniture, which includes vintage rattan chairs. As Knauss explains, the mix of new and classic creates a comfy quality that would be lost with showroom furniture. “I love it to be eclectic, and Kingsley and I worked well together that way,” says Eileen. The color story of blues and greens flows into the family room and also into the main-floor powder room; not to be missed is its lath ceiling, which gives the effect of gazing through lattice at the sky, and the convenience of the custom vanity’s open base for towel storage. A master-bedroom suite should stand on its own, so while the palette remains beachy, it’s coral the homeowners are waking up to. It boasts a coral-painted ceiling, Solid draperies with bamboo-shaped ivory rods and a Somerset Bay king-sized bed with a floral headboard, the room’s inspiration. Now that the project is over, Eileen and Bill are happy to keep extending the welcome mat. “It’s super-guest-friendly,” she says of the reno. “There’s always room for friends to stop in.” And, of course, there’s always room for family.

before and could think of no one more talented to take on the project when it began in 2012. Owners of a vintage home in Oradell, the couple naturally gravitated to one of Bay Head’s older treasures, built in the early 1900s. “It was a classic house with great bones, but it had a floor plan typical of houses of that era,” says Bill. “We realized that while staying true to those lines, we could enhance and modernize it.” To get the job done right, they gutted the place, knocking down walls for an open flow among the family room, kitchen and dining room. A new addition created the home’s 15-foot-by-18-foot master-bedroom suite—with its own balcony— as well as a sunroom, while the attic was transformed into three new bedrooms. They opened up the front porch and made it inviting with mahogany flooring. For accomplishing such a reno while preserving the home’s classic quality, the couple received an award from Bay Head’s historical society. Although the footprint remained, Knauss had what was essentially a blank canvas for her creativity, which extends to many of the home’s custom features, and carte blanche to be colorful and playful in the true spirit of the beach. A natural source of inspiration came from the Lilly Pulitzer Collection, known for bright colors that say “vacation” all year. “The family wanted to make sure the playful elements of beach life came across in the interior,” says Knauss. The solution? A classic seashore palette of mostly blues and greens, along with a master plan to flow these colors from room to room in different tones. Knauss explains: “We layer a neutral palette with colorful accent shades of blue, green and bits of gray and repeat it as a constant throughout the house.” The trio of sitting rooms proves the point: The living room’s standout turquoise

An unused garden room in Summit becomes a bright meeting place for old and new—and for guests too.

It all started with curtains. The owners of a sprawling home in Summit had hired interior designer Judy Sturdevant of Freeman Hall Design in Westfield to help select window treatments throughout the house. But over roughly two years, one small job turned into a few big ones. Sturdevant made over almost every “major” room at this residence—including the owners’ 23-year-old son’s bedroom, which, amid COVID-19, has been doubling as his home office. Most recently, the designer took on the garden room, which was dark, dated and in need of a refresh. But this room has three walls of windows that overlook the deck and the gorgeous property; curtains would’ve obstructed the view. Instead, because of limited wall space, an oil painting by Mark Pugh became the window treatment— and the base of the room. “We took off the frame and took it to a metalsmith,” the designer says of the piece. Eventually, “we hung it with airplane wire and cast

a finial ornament at the top to match the hardware on the two Kindel Furniture credenzas.” They also applied a neutral linen to the back to add visual appeal and ensure that the piece would lie more seamlessly against the window. To showcase the wife’s array of collectibles, Sturdevant had the same metalsmith make a custom brass étagère, which matches the sloped ceiling and has Greek-style accents corresponding to the owners’ existing coffee table. The designer also reupholstered the couple’s vintage sofa from 1933, which sits parallel to two spool chairs covered in a custom tropical fabric that—like all the plants and succulents—brings the outdoors in. The ceiling beams were refurbished with natural wood too. The finished product was a perfect marriage of old and new. “We’re all happy with how it turned out, and it flows beautifully,” says the designer. “It’s a wonderful feeling being trusted and showcasing different things I’ve never done before.”

This page: Architectural details such as coffered ceilings in the dining and living rooms give a sense of cohesiveness to the home. “It’s like one big ceiling cut into five special rooms,” Raskin says of the first floor. Opposite: The New York City-based designer describes this project as “casual contemporary and modern with family-friendly details.”

for Josh and Lori and their tween-aged son and daughter, the couple worked with their friend to give life and personality to the stunning five-bedroom, 5.5-bathroom residence—what Raskin called a “blank slate of new construction.” The couple wanted space for entertaining, but also a thoroughly comfortable home for their four-member family. Says Raskin: “It needed to be cozy and warm yet still maintain a modern aesthetic.” No problemo. The Capons were most comfortable with an overall neutral color palette of black, white and beige. However, they had acquired a lot of art while living in Manhattan and wanted to incorporate it in their new home for that “pop” of color. There was room for other strong hues too—the first of which came via the slate blue dining room chairs by Century Furniture. “That color is an important

The interior designer who was hired to revamp almost every room in a new-construction home in Bergen County had a big job ahead of her. Not only were she and her husband longtime friends of these homeowners, but the man of this house was Josh Capon, a celebrity chef. He and his wife Lori wanted their family’s forever home to be modern yet warm, inviting and, as with his several restaurants, conducive to hosting (and feeding) large groups of family and friends. “When it’s your friend and you know you’ll be spending time in that house, sitting on that couch one day, there’s another element of pressure to make sure it goes well,” says the project’s lead designer, Jill Raskin, co-founder of the New York City-based firm Flatiron27. d’oeuvres are served,” she says. “We chose a beautiful, partially upholstered Bespoke by Luigi Gentile ottoman that has a removable tray [for serving].” Two off-white chairs by Mitchell Gold+Bob Williams and a pair of black wooden stools by Worlds Away comfortably seat another four guests. The designer conceptualized and Adrian Meerman Design installed the floating-like geometric shelving on either side of the doorway to both open up the room and display a selection of the family’s personal items. In the next room over, the oval marble kitchen table by Sit Down New York is perfectly sized for the immediate family of mom, dad and two kids, yet can easily accommodate more diners. feature on the first floor, and we kept it going in the great room and through the house,” says Raskin, who worked on this project with her firm’s co-founders, Alexis Litman and Elizabeth McNellis. And the chairs needed to be highly functional as well as striking—for understandable reasons. “Josh was more involved in the chairs than some clients are,” Raskin says of the professional cook. “Having dining chairs that you want to sit on comfortably for hours was important to him.” The same could be said for the charcoal gray Kravet couch in the great room, where the Capon crew spends most of their time. “He wanted a sectional that could fit as many people as possible,” says the designer. “Not everyone cares about that!” But, like her clients, Raskin put thought into every detail. “The living room is right off the kitchen, so it’s a place where cocktails and hors

foyer, her favorite part of the project overall. “The foyer sets the tone for the home with dramatic lighting and flooring,” she explains. “The details on the stairs add a modern architectural element consistent throughout the space.” Four black leather counter stools by Gus Modern at the large working island were the chef ’s pick and, like the rest of the home’s seating options, the chosen ones needed to have that combination of looking beautiful and being “comfortable to sit, stay, eat, drink, be happy,” Raskin says. “That’s first and foremost in Josh’s restaurants and in his kitchen.” An oversized window above the sink allows for both natural light and views of the outdoors, and a Roman shade complements it by offering texture and a bit of privacy. And every chef ’s house needs a chef ’s kitchen, right? This property has two; the second is located outside on the patio overlooking the pool and backyard. The duo of light fixtures above the island were the only two that the builder, Remus Alexe of Grand Cupola Builders, installed and that the designers left untouched—or This page: Built-in shelving, which is almost an extension of the coffered ceilings, displays some of the Capons’ accumulated art objects. unmoved. Despite numerous large windows that let natural light seep in, illuminating accessories were imperative for the design of the main floor, so Raskin made sure to choose just the right pieces: Apparatus Studio for the foyer and Kelly Wearstler for the dining room. Finally, upstairs the master bedroom features accents of purple, a color both the Mr. and the Mrs. adore. The womb chair beside the bed belonged to Lori’s grandmother and was one of the few sentimental pieces of furniture the Capons wanted to bring with them. The elongated shape and large square-footage of the bedroom allowed for even more alternate seating areas, Raskin says, so she put in both a sofa and a bench to give the couple options. Undoubtedly, though, the master suite’s standout is the feature wall behind the velvet Century Furniture bed, which gets its distinctiveness not from wallpaper but from wood.

“That is a wood-planked wall that we had redone into this dark grayish brown,” Raskin says. “It was a modern take on a rustic wood feature wall that makes that part of the room feel grand and spectacular.” The accompanying bathroom was a rectangle of beautiful white marble that needed just a little something, so Raskin brought in a lavender area rug to “incorporate texture and color and pull it into the rest of the house.” The home turned out to be a triumph, and the designer’s friendship with the Capons came through with flying colors. “To date they are definitely my favorite clients, and they probably always will be,” Raskin says with a laugh. “They’re phenomenal people, and you can tell by how beautiful the results were. They were both open to my design as well as interested in making it their own.”

The clients and their designer agreed to make the master suite “feminine but not too girly. Pops of purple in the bedding, the window treatments and the area rug in the bathroom do the trick.

THE FACES OF

THE NEW GENERATION OF LEADERS IN POOLS AND SPAS

I HAVE ALWAYS BEEN drawn to design. As a teenager I spent weekends browsing furniture showrooms and antique stores, and preferred House Beautiful magazine and Metropolitan Home to the typical teen magazines. A memorable Thanksgiving dinner at my aunt’s house cemented my love for interior design. From the elegant window treatments to the antique chandelier, with the crackling fire in the fireplace and the impeccably set table, the perfect ambiance seemed to make the meal taste even more delicious. That was when I realized that a well designed home is not only a lovely backdrop, but that it can positively influence how our lives are lived and enjoyed. Graduating from Berkeley College with my degree in interior design was a life-long dream. In 1995, I founded Diane Durocher Interiors. Together with my team, we have had the privilege to design numerous awarding winning projects. I believe that our success comes from our dedication to our clients, the design process and consistently striving to recreate that feeling that I had so many years ago.
