doing eclectic right
D
o you ever step into a well curated room, one that seamlessly blends disparate styles, time periods and textures and think, “Why didn’t I think of that?” The truth is getting an eclectic style right can be daunting for the uninitiated. And done incorrectly, it’s far worse as it can look haphazard and chaotic. But getting it right is well worth the effort because it will reflect your unique aesthetic. So how do you pull it off? There are some rules when it comes to breaking the rules! Through a lot of trial and error (and advice from countless professionals), I’ll note a few: First, think about a unifying color scheme as it can serve as a great equalizer, pulling together various styles. Second, find an anchor. In much the same way that shopping malls of yore insisted on one or two big draws, the stores that would sustain the place, the same is true of your space. This can be
anything that speaks to you: a piece of art, a great rug, a beloved heirloom. Next, strive for balance—in scale and symmetry, that is. And don’t forget to work in textures to add depth. Think shiny metal with nubbly burlap, for instance. Or a silky Persian rug atop a coarse sisal. The homes in this issue prove that eclecticism needn’t be ashamed of its pedigree (or lack thereof). These homes shake up convention—in a good way— and are super livable to boot. Take, for example, the Senti family’s Brielle home. For their space, the couple wanted a whole-house makeover with a modern yet homey vibe—and Holmdel designer Yelena Gerts delivered. Turn to “Baby Won’t Wait” on page 64 to see how a distressed wood table can “shine” alongside beautiful quartz countertops and contemporary kitchen hardware. Wendy and Bruce Prager also wanted to shake things up, but they faced the challenge of trying to maintain the historic luster of their 1880s Colonial-Revival style home. To do this, the Short Hills couple teamed with designer Karen B. Wolf, who achieved a perfect mix of yesterday and today. In “Past, Meet Present” beginning on page 50, you’ll see many examples of eclectic design like the juxtaposing of relics of the past—a sewing machine once owned by Wendy’s grandmother—with a Lucite table, for instance. If you’re looking for more ways to bend the unwritten laws of design, you’ll discover some in “A Mixed Bag” (page 84). Think vintage chandelier hanging above a cool stainless steel kitchen counter or old grandiose doors opening to a room filled with Ghost chairs. And speaking of different designs, the area rugs on page 34 will take you for a walk on the wild side. They’re made of a variety of materials, such as leather and wool, and in a range of patterns that will enable you to mix and match styles like a pro. We hope the homes and products presented in this issue of NJ Home serve as inspiration for your next project. Of course, what you choose for your space should ultimately reflect your own style and personality and make you feel, well, right at home.

WHAT’S UP, WHAT’S NEW AND WHAT TO DO.
PRETTY IN PINK
GEAR UP
Sorry, but your retirement plans likely won’t compare with what Maria Pergay has been doing with her senior years. The 86-year-old French designer, dubbed the “queen of stainless steel,” has been working since the ‘60s but created more than 70 works over the past decade alone, including this standout piece, the Cabinet Engrenage. The cabinet, made of lemon wood, brass and various types of steel, combines form and function. And though the metallic engrenage (gear) in the front looks like the workings of a movable clock, it’s purely decorative. Decorative indeed, which explains why it’s been on display at museums and exhibits like the Demisch Danant art gallery in New York.
Are there two things young women of Gen Z love more than makeup and sleep? Not likely, which is why PBTeen has collaborated with beauty brand Benefit for its newest collection of furniture, rugs, home décor and bedding. The products, in gold, neutrals and—of course—millennial pink, are inspired by the 1970s with a cosmetics spin. For instance, “Hello Gorgeous” is emblazed If pillows, Mariela wall Schwarz on hang-Montiel hasand her fluffy way, robes. it’ll be ings rhododendrons and magnolias. Prices start at $19.50. If you don’t have time to scour a library for home inspiration, you’ll get one-stop shopping in Jennifer Boles’ newest tome, Inspired Design (Vendome, $75). Rather than focus on one designer, style, era or room, it lists all the names you must know from the last century of interior design. Pictures of designers posing in their best rooms are included. While you’re at it, get a lesson in pattern play from The Power of Pattern by Susanna Salk (Rizzoli, $45). It demonstrates how to incorporate bold prints and patterns, from stripes to florals, into every room in the home. Finally, isn’t your coffee-table book collection crying out for American Originals by William Abranowicz (Vendome, $65)? It boasts 225 photographs of the homes of rock stars, poets, athletes, politicians and other noteworthies. Abranowicz also recounts his experiences with each of his subjects, giving readers twofold inspiration.
IN PARIS, GO MAD
Here’s another excuse for that trip to Paris. The city’s famed art museum Musée des Arts Décoratifs (MAD) is introducing France to the works of late Italian architect Gio Ponti, one of the 20th century’s most influential designers, with a new exhibition. The retrospective display will feature 500 of Ponti’s furniture, glassware and ceramic designs spanning 60 years, like this mod tableware from 1967. “Tutto Ponti: Gio Ponti, ArchiDesigner” runs until Feb. 10.
BLOCKS OFF THE OLD CHIP
Visiting New York City this season? Consider a stop at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Its new exhibit, “Chippendale’s Director: The Designs and Legacy of a Furniture Maker,” details famed British cabinetmaker Thomas Chippendale’s rags-to-riches story, showing how his chair and table designs once intended for the British elite changed furniture design as a whole. The exhibit, timed to the 300th anniversary of Chippendale’s birth, features original drawings from his workshop and furniture inspired by his regal aesthetic. The exhibition runs through Jan. 27.

LAURA KIRAR’S INSPIRED DESIGN
Renowned product and interior designer Laura Kirar doesn’t just travel the globe for inspiration— she explores and experiences everything the world has to offer. To get a true sense of Mexican and ancient Mayan design for her Artesania X passementerie line, created for Samuel & Sons, Kirar journeyed into the heart—the jungles, villages, countrysides—of the Yucatán Peninsula. The new collection features bordered patterns, beaded fringe and other luxe trimmings that stimulate the senses while paying homage to Mesoamerican craft and history.
WAYFAIR, ANOTHER WAY
Talk about counter-trendy: Now a big online furniture retailer is trying out the brick-and-mortar concept—temporarily. Wayfair, which sells thousands of items for every room in the home, has opened a pop-up shop at Westfield Garden State Plaza in Paramus for the holiday season. The 400-square-foot shop located outside Lord & Taylor will carry 300 products, including bestselling furniture and decorative items from Wayfair’s online catalog, as well as some holiday decor. There also will be interior design experts on hand to help customers create custom furniture and tackle home design projects. The pop-up will be open during the mall’s normal business hours of 10 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. (closed Sundays) and it closes for good Jan. 1.

When Wendy and Brett Prager mentioned that they’d bought the historic house a few blocks away from their old home in Short Hills, most of their friends had the same response: Why? Built in the 1880s, the Colonial Revival-style home was desperately in need of another revival. But Wendy, a lawyer who’d majored in history as an undergrad, relished the challenge of restoring the house’s historic luster as she embarked on a renovation that would respect the home’s architectural roots while ushering it gently into the 21st century. “I wanted to keep the integrity of the period in the moldings and the floors, and yet, in the color and the décor, have it be transitional, easing toward modern,” says Wendy, who envisioned an eclectic design in which her grandmother’s sewing machine looked happily at home next to a Lucite table. With the help of designer Karen B. Wolf, along with architect John James and builder Michael Mroz, Wendy achieved a perfect melding of past and present. But that wasn’t the only thing the renovation needed to accomplish. The Pragers wanted a house that felt soft, fresh and refined, though “soft” hardly describes their day-to-day lifestyle. There were their three teenage daughters and an army of their friends, the guests who came into the house dripping pool water, and two rambunctious rescue Labs whose energy rivaled that of the teens. Wolf admits that uniting the family’s style and lifestyle was a daunting task. But a walk through the home proves that it was achieved successfully. The palette throughout blends pale grays and blues with white, lending the house an airiness that’s enhanced by large

windows and windowed doors with minimal or no window treatments—a choice in keeping with an overall design that Wolf describes as “pretty and formal without looking traditional.” As soon as you enter the house, you see what she means. The elegant Colonial Revival millwork in the foyer is tempered by that Lucite hall table and, against the stair wall, a dramatically mirrored chest. “Because Lucite is kind of nondescript,” says Wolf, “it’s a great way to integrate different styles.” She chose the chest, on the other hand, because it was as far from nondescript as possible. The area under the stairs, she explains, is “a dead space, so we wanted something there that would jump out at you.” The stairs themselves are lined with a flat-weave runner in a blue-gray animal print, eye-catching and more than capable of withstanding foot (and paw) traffic. That hardworking aesthetic was also behind the choices for many of the surfaces in the great room. The large expanse of floor, for instance, is softened with a pale gray rug whose texture belies its rugged indoor-outdoor construction. And the two medium-gray sofas are covered in Crypton fabric, which, like its near-namesake, is super-durable, though it’s also super-soft (an effect enhanced by banks of fluffy pillows). A round-on-round metaland-glass coffee table adds a modern touch, one of several in the house, including sleek kitchen pendants and a large satellite chandelier in the foyer. The main-floor powder room, on the other hand, has a very traditional feel, but the tradition is more North Africa than North Jersey. Moroccan-style concrete tiles line the walls, and the pendant lamp and sinuous mirror might both have been

This page: The kitchen required minimal renovation. Cabinets and an island were stripped and repainted a fresh white and, above the island, sleek modern pendants from Zenza Home were installed to add a wow factor. acquired in a Tangier souk. Even the vanity, with its mirrored drawer fronts and decorative flourishes, evokes the exotic. The room feels most in keeping with history, but white and pale gray fabrics, a glass étagère and glass-topped tables maintain the airiness of the rest of the house. Wendy wanted an intimate space where she could entertain friends, so Wolf created a conversation nook, in which large upholstered chairs around an upholstered coffee table and a gray flokati rug (perfect for kick-your-shoes-off gatherings) invite guests to linger in comfort. It’s the dining room, though, that seems particularly emblematic of the Pragers’ lifestyle and design preferences. The house’s historic millwork inspired the embellishment on the large custom dining table, essential for a couple passionate about entertaining. There’s no floor covering, so the original floors, stained a modern graphite, really shine here. Modern accents—a contemporary crystal chandelier, a series of candles set in large metal circles, abstract artwork in shades of gray—add a strong counterpoint yet manage to blend seamlessly with the room’s more historic elements. In short, this is the perfect place to fête all those skeptical friends who once asked “Why?”

This page: Pattern and texture are key in the powder room, from the concrete wall tiles to the vintage-look mirrored vanity by Ambella to a sinuous lighting fixture from Made Goods. Opposite page: The master bedroom, with its vaulted ceiling, was an add-on to the 1880s home. To warm up the room, the designer created a pillow-lined custom window seat and added soft touches like the TOV flokati bench and the settee from Vanguard. The grand but airy chandelier visually unites the ceiling with the rest of the room.

nious or it will take away from the artwork. It will be the star.” When it came to the décor, again, he wanted no aesthetic “drama queens” to steal the limelight from the art. “You wrap the house in beauty,” says Yarosh. “However, there is a singular mission: to let art be the final focus.” In the living room, the designer used fine materials from around the world for the back-to-back sitting areas—for example, the silk pillows from France for the oxblood-red silk-and-velvet couch resting upon a red-and-orange geometric rug from Milan. For designers, it was like a who’s who of the best and brightest. “We designed the home knowing we love to entertain and didn’t want a formal dining room,” says Marsha, who much prefers the expanded living room, which, along with the two-story grand foyer, can accommodate 70 guests for at-home jazz concerts. Yarosh adds: “The deep gray foyer, filled with chairs and ascending stairwells, becomes its own private amphitheater.” The couple also followed their tastes by abandoning the traditional breakfast nook off the kitchen in favor of a more intimate sitting area that draws its cozy feel from a custom bookcase. (For Marsha, books are as precious as art.) Darkorange mohair chairs create a starburst pattern around the crewel-patterned ottoman on a sheared American hooked rug, while a blown-glass chandelier introduces its own spectrum of colors. This area has become their go-to place to start the day with a cup of java and the morning news. The master bedroom suggests romance with an abstract tulip design on the upholstered bed but “it’s still a very strong room,” says Yarosh. Though purples and burgundy flow through the décor, “green is the base, nature’s neutral,” he explains. Other highlights include a large ceiling quatrefoil medallion, wallpaper by Hermès and a gallery cluster of paintings. This townhome’s décor makes a stunning impression in its supporting role, but the art takes center stage.
62
Great interior design surely needs an artist’s touch, but what if it doubles as a showcase for actual art? That was the challenge art collectors Marsha and Bruce Baldinger faced. Marsha recalls how a “big lifestyle change” had just swept them from a 6,500-square-foot custom house in bucolic New Vernon to a townhome in vibrant South Orange. What prompted them to follow their four adult children and leave their “nest” in 2016? “We lived in 25 percent of the house,” says Marsha. “It was ridiculous.” Their new townhome, she explains, would be “created around what we like”—including a vast array of artwork, some of it the prized abstract paintings of a great uncle—all quite close to the New York City theaters and museums they love. The problem: “Everything was essentially beige; there was no color to the house, no design,” she says. “And because there was a lot of open space, we wanted to have a master plan.” Marsha had never forgotten artist James Yarosh and a painting she and Bruce had purchased from him at the Blairsden Mansion Designer Showcase some years ago. She’d pore over his newsletters and loved his approach to designing homes as the perfect backdrop for art. But since she and Bruce didn’t plan to buy new furniture—just to reupholster—the Baldingers had to wonder: Would Yarosh share their enthusiasm? Lucky for them, he likes a challenge, and here it was: 5,000 square feet of oversized rooms that would dwarf typical furniture arrangements. His dramatic design said “Bye-bye, beige!” by tapping into the rainbow for bold shades such as deep orange for the sitting room, a rich gray for the two-story entrance foyer (carrying your eye to the living room’s creams and reds) and vibrant greens in the master bedroom. While a monochromatic approach would have confined such colors to an accent wall, Yarosh was courageous enough to spread the magic. Yet he cautions: “It may seem like a free-for-all—you get to have all that color—but you have to make it harmo-

Yelena Gerts was under the gun. The designer and owner of House of Style & Design in Holmdel had only five months to finish a whole-house renovation in Brielle, making structural changes and designing and decorating every room. The project had to be done before homeowner Brooke Senti gave birth to her first child. “Usually a project of this size takes nine months or more,” says Gerts. “But the homeowner has great taste and knew what she wanted. So she made my job very easy.” First up was reworking the kitchen, which was opened up to flow into an eating nook and a sitting area, thanks to contractor Frank DiNatale of Cool Runnings, whom Gerts credits with helping her complete the entire project so quickly. “Before, there was a peninsula that was blocking the hallway, but we completely redesigned it and put in a freestanding island, and now it’s much more open and functional,” she says. Quartz countertops, contemporary hardware and a marble mosaic backsplash bring the space into the 21st century, but the distressed wood barstools and kitchen table soften the look. “Brooke wanted a feel that was homey,” says Gerts. “The distressed wood balances the modernity of the kitchen and gives it a more casual feel.” The homeowners can relax with a glass of wine in the adjacent sitting area, which features a bar with built-in cabinets beneath a gorgeous white marble brick wall fittingly decorated with wine bottles. Because the home doesn’t have a large family room, the Sentis sought to make the basement a great place to entertain and hang out, and Gerts delivered. She created a focal wall with a large electric

fireplace and stone running up it “to bring a lot of texture and dimension to the space,” she explains. She also used an eye-catching, large-format tile on the wall behind the bar, which contains a refrigerator and sink for easy entertaining. “I love our basement area,” says Senti. “My husband, son and I spend a lot of time down there. It’s a great family area for us and will be great for the kids as they grow older as well.” At press time, Senti was due with her second child, so the basement will soon be busier. “A lot of people forget about their basement and don’t want to invest too much into it, but when the ceilings are high enough, it can be a wonderful space, more like a family room,” says Gerts. “This one came out really cool.” The first-floor powder room is also a favorite element of the project for the designer, who says, “When you walk in there, you think, ‘Where am I, a hip, modern hotel?’ It’s not a typical powder room.” The unique wallpaper is grasscloth with silk threads, which give it a little sheen. Gerts balanced that with a more masculine vanity featuring a concrete sink and wooden base. “The house is very calming, which is what I was going for,” says Senti, who loves the gray, white and beige color scheme. “The style and the colors we chose will hopefully be timeless.” If they do decide to change things up, they know they can count on Gerts to give them what they want—fast. “This was my record,” says Gerts. “But things get done quickly if everyone is on the same page. I told Brooke, ‘You can come work for me any time.’”

a clean look
Gutting a dated Tenafly colonial gives a young family a modern home they can grow with. The house needed a lot of work, but the homeowners were undeterred. They knew it had good bones and sat on the perfect block in the loveliest area of Tenafly. Plus, it had a large yard, a great pool and a beautiful view of the valley below. So they hired Shelley Cekirge, a Tenafly-based designer, to help them make the tired old house live up to its promise.

This Tenafly home’s new kitchen features special touches such as wainscoting on the ceiling to add interest and inset sinks for clean lines. A white and greige color palette was chosen for its timelessness and tranquility. “The simple colors, moldings and finishes that we used throughout the home make the family feel calm and relaxed,” says designer Shelley Cekirge.

“We love the open feel and the simplicity of the design,” says one of the homeowners, a young couple with kids who moved from New York City. Upstairs, the master bath is their private oasis. Two sinks are linked by a vanity with Pacific White marble countertops from Artistic Tile, giving the couple plenty of storage and lots of space to get ready each morning. The bathroom also features a striking standalone tub by Blackman, plus a shower with a recessed drain. “It allows the floor to be completely flat, which gives the whole room a seamless line,” Cekirge explains. “It’s a really beautiful touch.” The renovation took about nine months, and the homeowners couldn’t be happier with the results: “We feel like we are coming home to the house we always wanted,” they gush.
This page: Windows that look out over the backyard fill the kitchen with light. Opposite page, top: “I love the beautiful detailing on this vintage stool at the vanity,” says Cekirge. Bottom: The marble herringbone floor tile runs up the wall in the shower and creates an understated yet stunning focal point for the room.

“The couple wanted a transitional, clean look they could grow with,” Cekirge says. “We kept the color palette neutral and then popped in color with accessories. I wanted to layer the look, so I used a lot of texture and pattern with lots of different fabrics and wallpaper, plus some gold and silver to sparkle it up a little.” The kitchen was completely reconstructed and opened up to the family room to give the home an open, fluid feel. It features show-stopping, 3-inch-thick Super White marble countertops from Artistic Tile. The Pratt & Larson subway tiles on the backsplash have a frame relief to “give them a little bit more interest,” says Cekirge, and faucets and hardware were chosen for their clean lines and unfussy feel. Gray barstools from Room & Board and a trestle table and wooden chairs from Crate & Barrel complete the picture.

Mary Ellen Cositore, a happily single woman recently retired from a fast-paced corporate career in the city, loves to unwind with family and friends at her vacation retreat in Sea Girt, a home she co-owns with an older brother. To make it a welcoming place that’s perfect for entertaining, Cositore has often turned to designer Laurie Burke-Boice, owner of L.D. Burke Designs in Monmouth Beach. The designer has always delivered, transforming the Cape Cod’s living room, open-concept dining area and three guest rooms into inviting spaces. “This client and I have been working together on various projects since 2003,” says Burke-Boice. “We are at a point in our client/designer relationship where she lets me have free rein with my creativity and trusts my expertise.” “She gets me,” adds Cositore. “She knows what’s important to me and asks all the right questions to get at the core of how I live, what I value and what will bring me the most ease, comfort and functionality.” So when Cositore decided to focus—finally—on her own inner sanctum, she naturally enlisted Burke-Boice. “Now that I’m retired and spending about 80 percent of my time at this home, I wanted a room that would reflect that lifestyle change. It was time for something that was bright and soothing.” Burke-Boice’s mission: turn her client’s dark and cluttered master bedroom into a serene haven more in keeping with the home’s breezy beach style. She started by adding three skylights to let in the light. She replaced a bulky window air conditioner unit with a streamlined cooling/heating wall unit placed over the window frame; this not only increased the light flow, but also

This page: The skylights give the room a welcome dose of sunshine. Whether it serves as a quality “me time” retreat or a cozy guest corner, the sitting area is a natural draw. It’s often used as an informal gathering spot when friends come calling. Then, just move the coffee table, open the daybed, and presto—instant sleepover accommodations for visiting nieces and nephews. Opposite page, top: The wicker trunk, seascape painting and straw hats all contribute to the casual beach feel. Long on whimsy, the wicker giraffe planter brings a touch of “playful silliness.” Bottom: Subtle details like the starfish and crystal vanity ornaments reflect the light and breezy beach motif. trunk at the base of the bed and a two-door cabinet by the daybed also provided functional yet design-conscious storage. For all its spaciousness, the room still feels intimate and cozy. The designer made sure of that by fashioning separate living clusters. For instance, the queen-size bed— framed on both sides by angled ceilings, nightstands topped with bedside lamps from Port 68 and Surya shag rugs—makes for a dreamy enclave; the daybed, coffee table, ceramic drum table and two-door cabinet grouping creates a perfect lounging spot equally suited for quiet solitary pursuits or fun sleepovers; and the vanity section—complete with a Mongolian fur stool from Port 68 and pretty baubles and beach-themed decorations on the counter shelves—is a jewel-box haven for feminine pampering. Other personal touches, like the seascape painting, terry robes and straw hats, evoke sunny, carefree days spent walking along the waves. Long on whimsy and sentimental value, a vintage wicker giraffe planter reflects an unexpected glimpse of the owner’s playful nature. “It’s my dream come true,” Cositore says of the room. “It’s light, classy and purposeful. Whenever my girlfriends come to visit, they always say ‘It is so you.’ It’s been more than two years, but I still feel the same way every time I enter it. Sometimes, I’ll just randomly text Laurie to tell her how much I love my bedroom.” “It’s a happy room,” says Burke-Boice. “Knowing that my client comes in and smiles and feels totally at home here, that means I’ve done my job.”
NJHome
improved the ventilation system. To create the room’s “light as air” mood, Burke-Boice selected a soothing white palette scheme. That was reflected in Benjamin Moore’s White Dove paint on the walls, trims and some of the builtins, the wicker furniture, the area rugs, the window treatments and the bleached maple floors, which were refinished to a gentle glow. The existing queen-size bed and daybed both got refreshing updates with crisp and comfy white bedding and slipcovers. Strategic splashes of color added warmth and visual interest. “Rather than an all-white summer bedroom, I chose the coral color to add a little punch, but not so much that it overpowers the softness of the space,” notes Burke-Boice, who covered the areas behind the bed and daybed with coral wallpaper from Wallquest to create focal points. She also incorporated coral into other design elements such as the table tray, the Serena & Lily border bedding and pillowcases, the Surya throw and scallop design pillow on the daybed and the vase on the vanity. To minimize clutter while maximizing storage space, the designer replaced a bulky armoire with custom-built, multi-drawer cabinets on either side of the dainty vanity, which is the perfect size to hold beauty essentials. A full-length, freestanding wicker mirror gave way to a two-door mirrored closet with additional overhead white storage cabinets. (Before the reorganization, the closet extended under the eaves, resulting in wasted space the client couldn’t access.) A wicker

This Paramus home’s 10-year-old kitchen didn’t need a major makeover, but black paint for the island base and some chic farmhouse and antique décor freshened it up. The enormous distressed-style dining table is perfect for family gatherings.

“My philosophy is ‘Less is more,’” says Barbieri, who started her design work with the kitchen, family room and office a year and a half ago and is now remodeling the entire house. “I don’t like to destroy things. It’s bad for the environment. “The first thing we did was enhance all the molding and replace all the hardware and doorknobs throughout the house,” she continues. Custom window treatments also went a long way to elevating the look without a big renovation. In the kitchen, the couple held onto the cherry cabinets, along with the ceramic flooring and all the appliances, but stripped off the wallpaper and spray-painted the island black “to give it a modern farmhouse feeling,” says Barbieri. The homeowner was amazed at how something as simple as new lighting (a trio of pendant lights and chandelier, both in dark bronze) could work such wonders for the kitchen. “What they had was brass and dated,” Barbieri explains. “One of the easiest fixes you can do is lighting.” The near-necessity in this kitchen was the new dining

People have high expectations for their forever home, and a Paramus couple was no different. They wanted a house that could easily accommodate big holiday gatherings, stand up under their two active children—even if they jumped on the sofa—and hold their interest through their retirement years. That was a tall order, but that wasn’t all. They also hoped to achieve a fresh new look—farmhouse and modern— without gutting the place. Sometimes a clean sweep, a start-all-over job, is the right answer. Not this time. This time the challenge was to mix and match with existing décor. The homeowner says the last owners built a new addition and remodeled the whole house in 2006; she couldn’t imagine doing a complete renovation so soon. “I just wanted to freshen it up and make it my own,” she says of her goals for the project. The couple called upon Susan Barbieri of the eponymous Hawthorne design firm, and found she had a knack for giving new life to existing features.

table, large enough to handle big family gatherings and comfortable with custom-made upholstered chairs. That it’s rustic with a distressed wood finish to complement the cherry cabinets was almost an afterthought. “We host almost all the holidays for our family, and that means about 20 people,” says the homeowner. Antiques, vintage shutters alongside the gingham check drapes and a chalkboard for the kids deliver country charm. Comfort for the whole clan was key to the family room’s new design. So was durability; there are, after all, two boys, ages 5 and 7, ready to put it all to the test. The two gray sofas are of soft distressed leather, “which works well in a family with two boys who like to jump on them—there’s nothing to worry about,” the designer says. “And the chairs swivel so they can be turned if you’re watching TV.” The black paint for the once light-oak media center and mantel created a modern vibe, just as black did in the kitchen. The couple loves to travel and made the mantel a showcase for their photos. Think white lambswool benches would never hold up
in this environment? Think again. According to Barbieri, natural materials like that can come clean with a little soap and water. Even the gray wool area rug has nature on its side when it comes to upkeep, she adds. The sky’s the limit when it comes to the gray color scheme, which leaves the couple free to throw any color into the mix simply by switching up the accent pillows. “It’s extremely popular because you don’t have to commit to color on a wall,” says the designer. The third project, a new office, carries the farmhouse look forward with custom panels and lanterns on the walls, a cowhide rug and leather chairs in whiskey color for a masculine touch, with ottomans for when it’s time to take a break from paperwork. The desk is contained in the wall unit, and with the chair pushed in it becomes part of the décor. The husband can work here and meet with clients in a setting designed to be as comfy as the rest of the house. One room at a time, this forever home is taking shape, and the owners couldn’t be happier. A little bit of change, it turns out, can do a lot.

TRY A COOL LOOK FOR THIS HOT COMMODITY.
The fireplace is the focal point of most living rooms, and ’tis the season to gather around it. So why not enhance the look with decor beyond family photos? Storing lumber indoors for your woodburning fireplace can be a fashionable opportunity. Skip the bulky steel racks that consume valuable floor space and stack wood vertically in a contemporary built-in niche. A fireplace designer, such as KJB Fireplaces in Ramsey, can incorporate floor-to-ceiling storage to fill dead space along the wall. The design drives the eyes upward and creates a dramatic aesthetic, especially in taller rooms. For those with less space but plenty of entertaining around the hearth on the schedule, smaller built-ins or wall-mounted frames also are practical and visually stunning.
