CALM, COOL AND COLLECTED
CALM, COOL AND Every collector has a tale to tell and, with elegant planning, the collection tells it.
COLLECTED
THE ECLECTIC INTERIORS FASHIONED BY WORLD-RENOWNED
designer Philip Mitchell reflect his genius as a collaborator. In his book Collected Interiors: Rooms That Tell a Story, Mitchell explains how he helps turn a homeowner’s aesthetic intent into reality, combining a client’s collected antiques and pieces with modern furniture—plus touches of the unexpected.
An Irish open-rack dresser (ca. 1870s) from 1stDibs creates a perfect display space for Majolica inside this seaside cottage. The wood finish also works harmoniously with the butcherblock counters, while the Waterworks Easton Vintage gooseneck faucet above the deep farm sink layers in another historical reference.
This page: A couple’s collection of porcelain vessels by Akiko Hirai offered two display options in this Georgian-inspired Cape: group them all together or show them off separately. Opposite page: Mitchell chose the latter, adding the pieces to separate built-in shelves in the master bathroom. The Japanese porcelain mixes well with the pristine towels and linens and the rest of the bath’s black, white and gray color palette.
This page: Clients living in a city residence wanted to display a cache of antique pewterware they had amassed over the years. Mitchell chose a small sitting area for the collection. Opposite page: With an inviting blue brick fireplace and matching armchairs, an inglenook provides plenty of coziness while the mantel offers ample space for each of the distinctive pieces.
