cooking up great ideas
Perhaps your oven conked out. Or you admired a friend’s new kitchen cabinets. Before you know it, you’re yearning for not just replacements but a whole new kitchen. And that, I know, can’t be rushed. By sheer coincidence, many, many of the homes I’ve been pitched of late feature kitchen renovations. It appears that despite labor shortages and shipping delays, the kitchen is important enough that the intrepid among us embark on the months-long journey to our dream space. I learned from homeowners and designers of the kitchens we feature in this issue one essential truth: There’s only one right way to design a kitchen—your way. That’s because our kitchens tell who we are, even if we’re not gourmet cooks. Anyone can have an elegant dining room—rope it off till the guests come if you like, though I’d never advise that. But a kitchen won’t lie for you. It’s always on the job, marrying taste with sustenance and routine, and there’s an extra thrill if it also manages to be beautiful.
Turn to page 60 to see what I mean. There, you’ll see how a Ridgewood couple combined their own passion to create—the husband is a builder and the wife’s a designer—with the know-how of interior designer Anthony Passanante to fashion a brand-new kitchen filled with everything they admire. Read about the entire project in “Creativity Gets Its Chance.” Maintaining the home’s mid-century charm was the hope of Upper Saddle River empty nesters, whose homey but outdated kitchen had captured their hearts over the years. Designer Bonnie Hufnagel came in to lend a hand, following the homeowners’ directives and wishes to a tee. The result is a kitchen with modern amenities—and all the character of yesteryear. Turn to “Cooking with Charm” on page 54 to see the gorgeous space. Designer Jill Moskowitz redid a Little Silver kitchen under similar circumstances. The homeowners weren’t in love with the ornate Tuscan style of the previous design, but Moskowitz did keep some of the old elements—cabinets, for instance—before adding new touches. In the end, the homeowners received was exactly what they wanted: a cohesive, modernfarmhouse kitchen. Flip to “A Kitchen Refreshed” on page 66 to read about the design. This edition of NJ Home features two other kitchens that I know you’ll love (“Black and White—and Fun All Over” on page 48 and “The Waterfront Beckons” on page 70), but it’s also packed with other designs and products sure to offer inspiration—and figurative warmth—for the season. This is winter, after all, the time of year when so many of us gather with loved ones to cook together, eat together and be together—in the kitchen. No other room satisfies on quite so many levels—or so I’ve heard.

It’s not a one-stop shop if you’re looking to furnish your space from top to bottom, but Nordstrom Home has a lot to offer if you’re scouring for unique holiday gifts, décor or bedding and bath products. When you’re picking a color to paint a room, the four walls (and sometimes the ceiling) are undoubtedly your main focus. But don’t overlook the smaller details such as architectural millwork, wainscoting, molding, door frames and window trims—these can make a big impact. Instead of keeping them white or neutral, consider going bold with colorful millwork in hues such as blue, green, red or black. “This gives the room a more decorated feel,” according to Lori McManus, decorator at Ladybug Interiors in Flemington. “Your eye is drawn to the areas that have the bright/bold colors.” How to choose your hue? McManus suggests pulling a color from fabric, art or rug in the room, or opt for a color that’s darker than the walls to modernize the space and enhance the architectural details. “It creates depth and contrast when the millwork is painted darker than the walls,” she says. If this trend is too out-there for you, “remember that paint is not permanent and can easily be changed.”

Historical landmark and gilded mansion The Abbey in Morris Township is getting a new lease on life. In September, board members greenlighted a new project in which RH, formerly known as Restoration Hardware, will transform the majestic property into a furniture showroom and a glamorous restaurant. The luxury home furnishing purveyor’s Morris County location will be the latest in its slate; there are also RH-branded cafés in New York City, Napa Valley, Chicago and Nashville. Sometimes the best interior design tricks are cool details in unexpected places. One example? Placing a backsplash in a room other than your kitchen or bathroom. “A backsplash is a decorative way to describe any material used to protect a wall, mainly drywall, from anything wet or dirty,” says Dana Hunkele of Plume Interiors in Caldwell. She recommends installing a backsplash in a room with a sink like a laundry room or butler’s pantry. Or, try it in a mudroom, art studio or wet bar, which are all prone to messes. “You can add drama to a space without feeling like you overdid it,” she adds. “Make these small spaces as special as possible—a little goes a long way.”

A bold geometric print on the curtains in the dining room fits with the homeowner’s tailored vibe and provides interest against a deep blue wall, says designer Kingsley Belcher Knauss. The iron chandelier with driftwood beads is elegant in shape while keeping things casual in the space. Knauss chose black Windsor-style chairs to reinforce the black in the home’s color scheme, but paired them with brown upholstered hostess chairs to add warmth and coziness. A faux tree fills the space between the dining room and family room and features black, white and silver balls, faux holly berries, a vintage mercury glass garland and presents decorated in buffalo plaid paper.

This page, left: “It’s always fun when I can get someone to add something bold, and it was important to have a strong accent in the kitchen,” says Knauss of the blue tile backsplash. “It makes the kitchen look more custom and reinforces the color scheme.” The island’s gray stain provides contrast with the white cabinets and white quartz countertops. Knauss chose leather barstools for their rich look and feel—and their practicality for a family with two kids, as spills can easily be wiped away. a home. “I said ‘clean,’ but otherwise, I gave her free rein,” says Simon. “She had carte blanche, from the doorknobs to the drapes.” Knauss selected a color palette of smoky blues, ivories and black, and then built upon those neutrals with textures and patterns such as plaids and geometric prints. And because the homeowners were due to move in just before Christmas, Knauss decorated the home for the holiday, using black-and-red buffalo plaid to play off the black already prominent in the home’s design. “The more you repeat the color scheme within spaces, the less chaotic and cluttered it looks, especially in tight spaces,” says Knauss. Black stockings hang from white nutcrackers on the fireplace mantel, while simple wooden snowflakes decorating the family room windows are a nod to a more handcrafted style and don’t block the view or the light. “I asked Kingsley to push me out of my comfort zone, and it all came together perfectly,” says Simon. “Every house I’ve lived in looked like a hotel room—very minimalist. In this house, she filled all the spaces, but it doesn’t look cluttered. It still looks clean, and that’s what I love about it.”

Tim Simon can appreciate the beauty and grandeur of a historic home, but he doesn’t want to live in one. The reason? “Anything I try to fix, I make worse,” he says, laughing. Although Westfield is full of beautiful older houses, “I knew these gorgeous homes would need some attention, and even minor repairs would be disastrous,” he says. So when it came time to move to Westfield from Philadelphia for work, he and his wife Erika decided to build something new. “That way we wouldn’t have to make adjusts and do the upkeep,” he explains. The Simons hired Kingsley Belcher Knauss of KBK Interior Design in Westfield to design the home, and she worked closely with the builder to customize and enhance the four- bedroom, four-bathroom home’s initial plans. “We did everything from helping them pick siding to designing decorative built-ins,” says Knauss. The Simons had moved frequently over the years for work and had always bought “disposable” furniture that they wouldn’t mind leaving behind. But this time they planned to stay, so Knauss was charged with buying all new furnishings to make the house feel like

that would include an open kitchen and living room overlooking the outdoor pool and entertaining areas, a home gym, a guest bedroom suite and a full bathroom. They planned the lower level to harmonize with the design language of the 3,800-square-foot home’s eclectic brick-and-stucco-style exterior, as well as with the newly decorated upper parts of the house. “The first floor has a modern update with clean lines, minimal trim work and a fresh and lively feel to the spaces,” Mannino notes. “We also wanted to replicate the future design of the exterior upgrade we had discussed with the clients, which would replace the dated brick and pale stucco with white stucco and black windows.” However, this more immediate phase of the project, which took eight months to complete, was limited to the lower level and the adjacent outdoor patio, which the design team transformed from a continuation of the driveway into the current well-defined patio space. “Since we were changing the location of the bathroom, adding a kitchen and essentially altering the entire blueprint, the biggest challenge was trying to figure out the layout,” says Katherine. Before this project, the space was a large, open, utility-like room with awkwardly located components such as a water heater, a water softener and a raised platform room with no walls. (“Not really sure what the purpose of that raised platform was,” Mannino puzzles.) Everything seemed to be in the wrong place,

Pulling off a black-and-white design concept is simple—deceptively so. In the wrong hands, the aesthetic runs the risk of coming off overly stark and antiseptic or, even worse, boring and uninspired. In the right ones, however, it can shine with all the crisp clarity and purity of a minimalist work of art. Luckily, it was a case of the latter when the owners of a contemporary style home in Old Tappan chose Rosario S. Mannino, principal of Rutherford-based RS Mannino Architects + Builders and his design team, to turn their unfinished basement into a sophisticated study in black and white that appealed to their modern sensibilities. Homeowners Katherine and Kaliq Chang, a fun-loving, family-oriented couple with three young kids, enjoy entertaining family and friends poolside. They envisioned doing so in a bright, modern, refreshing space that felt like a luxurious pool cabana. For the kitchen, their wish-list order included features that were high in functional practicality and dramatic flair. They also hoped for a year-round retreat for when guests, especially grandparents Remito and Teresita Masaganda, came to stay. “We wanted the basement in a more modern, transitional style than the original design of the rest of the house, and for it to match the renovations we had made so far on the first and second floors,” Katherine explains. “We also wanted to use a bold, contrasting black-and-white scheme with gold accents for fun.” Working with these guidelines, Mannino and his design team set about reimagining the existing unfinished basement into a multi-use entertaining space

Pops of bold black punch up the drama even more. For instance, the custom white cabinets with black accent doors—in Benjamin Moore Decorator’s White and Onyx, respectively—“just scream energy and add vibrancy to the space,” the designer says. In the kitchen, the ceiling works perfectly against the Mitzi gold pendant lights and Emtek hardware fixtures in satin brass to imbue the space with a jazzy, Gatsby-type feel. The custom cabinets, made by Mannino Cabinetry’s bespoke collection team, and the Silestone countertops and backsplash in eternal calacatta gold seal the style deal with élan. A reflection of the diamond pattern ceiling, the custom TruStile barn door features Rustica hardware—it’s another standout. Acting as a pleasing contrast to the white cabinetry, the understated Mannino Cabinetry custom black wood-panel hood fits in with the design aesthetic, while the Artistic Tile floors impart a polished concrete feel and look. When it comes to style and appeal, there’s no gray area here. The finished basement—which Mannino calls “fun, energetic, young, refreshing and elegant”—has been elevated to a stylish entertainment hub that draws compliments from all who spend time within its inviting spaces. Says Katherine: “We love how Rosario was able to design the layout of the basement to exactly fit our needs—and to make our vision for the look of the basement real.”

making the overall spaces difficult to lay out and furnish. Accordingly, Mannino and his team got to work to establish creative order. They leveled the floor and restructured the configurations to create a new mudroom space, a new second laundry closet, a storage room, a home gym and a guest bedroom. To bring in more natural light, the design team created new, larger openings on the exterior walls of the kitchen and living/lounge areas. “The existing lower space had different levels—it was a 16-foot-tall space—so we had to make all of the various openings into one uniform window height to have it appear that this was the original intention,” says Mannino, adding that they accomplished this by cutting openings into the original concrete foundation, an extensive process. Under the new schematics, the farthest sliding door leading to the pool was enlarged to create an easier, more inviting transition between the pool and the “cabana.” Adjacent to the kitchen island, the other sliding door is entirely new and leads to the new, porcelain-tile patio. Additional light is plentiful thanks to recessed lighting throughout the space. Further assuring warmth and coziness while staying true to the prevailing modern aesthetic, the cement-like tiles on the indoor floors are heated with hydronic radiant heat tubes; emitting an urban-hip vibe, they look cool to the eyes, but are warm to the feet. One of the most striking features is definitely the custom black, diamondshaped, V-groove chevron ceiling. Its centered paneling, radiating outward, makes a dramatic statement as it continues the home’s black-and-white color scheme.

Located between the kitchen and the new guest bedroom, the bathroom offers all the comforts and amenities of a high-end hotel. “We love the bathroom,” says the homeowner. “It’s clean, modern and just beautiful.” Its color scheme follows the rest of the lowerlevel space, adding another rich layer of luxury with an allnatural marble stone countertop and oversized accent niche wall in the shower that gives “beautiful movement and richness to the space,” according to the designer. The freestanding, double-sink vanity is custommade by Mannino Cabinetry; all tiles are by Artistic Tile; plumbing fixtures are by Brizo and lighting is by WAC Lighting.

Three years ago, after their grown children had moved out, a couple of empty nesters decided it was time to downsize to a ranch-style home. They found what they were looking for in Upper Saddle River. The twobedroom house, a mid-century-style structure built in 1971, had loads of character and charm. But its original kitchen had “renovation project” written all over it. Hoping to retain the homey aspects that had so captured their hearts, while also clearing up the

space for a more organic modernity, the homeowners contracted architect William J. Martin, AIA, of Westwood-based WJM Architects and Woodro Construction in Dumont, to vault the standard-height ceiling in the kitchen and match it—with rustic beams—to the adjacent living and dining areas. “When creating the 3D-computer modeling, it became clear that removing the loft area needed to improve the space would destabilize the roof trusses,” Martin explains. “The lofted area above the kitchen was bracing the roof structural system. Roof trusses had to be reinforced and, in some cases, rebuilt and replaced once that loft was removed. This was challenging because the contractor, Woodro, had to install temporary shoring and bracing in order to facilitate the structural modifications. But once the new trusses were in place, the true beauty of the mid-century modern space seamlessly emerged.” What also resulted was an extremely tall and long rectangular area for the U-shaped kitchen—complete with an island at the center. The space features a wall full of windows on one side and a large brick fireplace structure that forms the “wall” on the opposite side. So much open space, so much potential. Now, how to make best use of the possibilities in order to create a design that both complemented the mid-century architecture and embraced the elegant symmetry of a more minimalist grandeur? Enter Bonnie Hufnagel, kitchen designer at Ulrich Inc. in Ridgewood. Working off the architect’s plans, Hufnagel and the rest of the Ulrich team put their considerable skills and resources toward meeting the tall order. Guided by the homeowners’ specific directives, Hufnagel designed and refined the details of the kitchen layout, and the Ulrich crew installed all of the cabinetry and appliances. “The client and I collaborated regarding the placement of the range top and sink,” Hufnagel says. “She definitely wanted the sink centered in front of the windows and not

the space, while the oversized, 36-inch Kohler farmhouse sink breaks up the long run of countertop below the impressive windows. Although the row of windows let in light all during the day, nighttime illumination posed a dilemma: Any lights put in the vault would lose their brilliance by the time they reached the countertop surface. Installing pendants would require extremely long cords and would interfere with the wonderful window views. Also, the expanse of windows along this wall allowed no wall space into which to set lights. So, in a lightbulb moment, Hufnagel suggested placing sconces in the wooden divider between the upper and lower windows. “This solved the problem and added to the charm of the place,” she says. “They look right at home, bringing light over the long run of countertop along the windows.” Such creative problem solving and collaboration among all parties involved proved essential for the successful outcome. “Working with Ulrich on the kitchen and Woodro on the construction in order to balance design with the clients’ goals is what made this such a truly great project,” says Martin. Giving high praise to all the professionals who worked to create the bright and uplifting kitchen, the homeowners couldn’t agree more. “The transformation of the space is remarkable,” the homeowner says. “People walk in and exclaim, ‘Wow, it is truly a beautiful space!’” “Photos don’t do it justice,” says Hufnagel. “You feel like you’re in a lovely chalet in the woods when you stand in the space.”

in the island, even though it was going to be 10½ feet from the range top. I suggested a 36-inch-wide sink—we used a farmhouse style—which visually gave the sink some ‘presence’ and made the distance to the range top seem less. “The kitchen was basically for the clients’ enjoyment and entertainment purposes,” the designer continues. “Leaving the island surface uninterrupted by any sink or cooking fixtures allows them to use the entire island as a buffet when entertaining.” Along with placement, balance and proportion were also key considerations. “Because the room is long, it was important to us that the kitchen design be symmetrical,” the homeowner notes. The fireplace “wall” originally housed an oven. Since the wall structure was to remain, a new Wolf double oven was situated in the same place to avoid altering the brickwork. All of the functional aspects of the kitchen—appliances and storage—had to be on the short runs of the limited wall space. Hufnagel thoughtfully planned out the locations of specific stations—a cooking center, a cleanup section and food storage areas—to ensure everything fit together within a balanced, cohesive layout. Given the 20-foot length between the two functional ends, Hufnagel needed to create a convenient flow that would “not require roller skates.” Her solution: She kept the storage—refrigeration and pantry—at one end, and the cooking, near the ovens, at the other. In between, the large island in gray-stained wood tones centers

For many buyers, a home must be move-in ready—no hassle, no fuss. But Stephanie and Louis, longtime Ridgewood residents, were infused with DIY spirit. When a house came on the market around the corner from them, it wasn’t just the desirable block and the big backyard that inspired them. It was also a plus that the home needed lots of TLC, from its warped floors to its ’80s décor. “We bought this 100-year-old house knowing we were going to renovate it,” says Stephanie. “My husband and I like to redo things.” The couple with two teenage daughters thinks of renovation as an art, and they were eager to practice that art using his skills as a builder and hers in design. Thus, it was without hesitation that they took on this complete gut job in mid-2019 and called upon Waldwick-based Anthony Albert Studios to help cement their vision. “It was an older house that needed a big face-lift,” says designer Anthony Passanante. “Now it’s pretty much a brand-new home.” One of the most dramatic creations is the kitchen, which was really virgin territory carved from a 2,000-square-foot expansion. Here the herringbone marble backsplash and white custom cabinetry find contrast in dark polished, white-veined granite countertops and a Tiffany blue that originated in an unlikely moment of inspiration. Both Stephanie and Passanante recall the time they met to choose custom knobs for the BlueStar stove, which, along with the custom hood, was to wow with a mix of high-gloss black, stainlesssteel and polished-brass accents. “My client that day had a beautiful purse, and it was that color—a Tiffany blue,” Passanante recalls. “We

looked at each other and said, ‘That would be hot.’” Now the Tiffany blue isn’t limited to her Hermès purse, but includes the stove knobs and the walk-in pantry’s cabinetry. Their combined imaginations wouldn’t limit them to just one style; rather, the room is a fusion of what they admire, with highlights just waiting to be discovered. The custom cabinets, for instance, are topped with polished brass chicken wire set behind glass—a reminder of the pet chickens they once had, says Stephanie. “I had definite ideas of things I wanted, and he designed them out,” she says. But it was teamwork, like the wood beam coffered ceiling with recessed lighting over the island inspired by a feature she admired in Passanante’s office. For the designer, it was a welcome opportunity to mix materials. “I think it brings in personality and warmth and texture,” he says. Introducing walnut on the two SubZeros, which really don’t look like refrigerators at all, was also one of Stephanie’s ideas brought to life by Passanante. Because entertaining is another passion, the island fits a family of four and there’s a rustic wood table for the entire gang on the white oak quarter-sawn floor. An added highlight is the window above the farm sink that sits flush with the countertop to maximize the view. Perfectly tailored to this family’s personality is the dining room bar and whisky room. As a member of the Ridgewood Whisky Club, Louis wanted plenty of illuminated shelving to showcase his whisky-bottle collectibles. The result? A bar within a bar. Closest to the dining room is a walnut and lead-gray custom bar, wow-worthy with its round hammered brass sink and leathered-finish granite top. A window showcases the illuminated whisky room behind, which, made for the connoisseur, features a backsplash of textured antique mirrored tile in a diamond pattern and more rich walnut. Now that the project has turned into a happy home, the couple is ready to enjoy their version of art with friends and family. And Stephanie is glad for a palette that always draws a smile. “When you see that Tiffany box, there’s nothing negative about it,” she says.

perfect for hors d’oeuvres—to the top-of-the-line appliances, such as the 48-inch Wolf stove with two ovens. There’s even a temp-controlled, light-up wine cellar with a metal-and-glass door, making good use of space under the stairs. The homeowners are wine collectors, Botero explains: “They wanted to have a good-sized wine cellar to have a good selection of wine next to the kitchen.” In the dining room, beside windows maxed “to bring the outside in,” there’s always room for one more at the cerused oak table, where rope-backed chairs exude New Jersey beach style, says Wilson. A blackened-iron extended lantern illuminates the scene, while photographic art offers a touch of blue, one of the home’s accent hues. With so many conveniences ingrained in this design, from a stove-side pot filler to easy-access silverware drawers, parties are never pressured. The owners “are very relaxed people, and they love to be comfortable,” says Wilson. Surely their guests will catch this spirit too, as the couple’s getaway truly lets the good times roll.

makes just the right impression. With an oversized island that anchors the space, the cabinetry is a focal point; it provides contrast for an array of soothing whites. The wood tones tastefully rein in the white palette that includes quartz countertops, a middle cabinet section and a backsplash of large subway tile. “They didn’t want to make the whole thing too busy,” Botero says of the mellow backsplash between two towers—one a wood-toned SubZero refrigerator, the other an oven and microwave. (This kitchen can feed the proverbial army.) Look to the details for what Botero calls another “statement”: the icebox hardware, a vintage accent in brass and chrome. “That’s a popular look in cabinetry,” adds fellow designer Wilson. Because Wilson appreciates the value of natural materials, wood was a must for the floors: a walnutstained, quarter-sawn white oak that does not compete with the cabinets’ similar stain. Much more than eye candy, this kitchen stands out as a chef ’s functional facility in every way, from the butcher-block island end sections—

the double-height ceiling to the floor, which she covered (mostly) with a large area rug in soft shades of gray and white. Flanking the fireplace are two large, colorful pieces of abstract art that not only add color to the room but also take visual precedence over the flooring. In the bathrooms, she took out the builder’s vanities—a job significantly easier than demolishing and replacing flooring and tile—and replaced them with something more in line with the owners’ vision. “The new vanities are more interesting and luxurious and draw the eye away from the tile,” she explains. A love of color was part of the owners’ aesthetic. Akguc satisfied it with bright pops and sweeps of color against mostly neutral finishes and wall hues: In the living room, two sapphire velvet armchairs echo the predominant tones of the artwork, which the couple collects and which animate many rooms in the house. The calm neutrals of the dining room are offset by another large abstract piece and a pair of teal curtains. Lighting was particularly important—a way of adding flat-out luxury, de-emphasizing the dark flooring and making the whole house feel

When Jose Jimenez and his wife, Noelia, first walked into the spec house in Glen Rock, they were wowed by the sense of space afforded by the twostory foyer and the view that stretched all the way through to the backyard. What didn’t wow them were the builder’s chosen finishes, which struck them as more ordinary than inspired. They bought the house anyway, and since it was only partially completed, they hired designer Elizabeth Akguc of Agape Design Group to bring their personal vision to fruition. They didn’t want to start pulling up flooring and removing tile, so Akguc found herself challenged to work against elements that weren’t in keeping with the homeowners’ design aesthetic. “They wanted something a little more modern, a little more design-forward, with a more luxurious feel,” she says. But they also hoped the home would feel warm, inviting and fun. “We wanted our family to feel comfortable, but we also wanted the house to look well designed,” says Jose. The owners weren’t wild about the dark wood floors, so Akguc worked on adding elements that would direct the eye upward. In the family room, she hung translucent white curtains that stretched from

to get up, even after the final credits have run. The dining room too has a deliberate softness to it. The wood-topped table with its acrylic base is the only hard surface in the space; the soft area rug extends well beyond the comfortably upholstered dining chairs. Like so many of the pieces in the house, Akguc chose the table, manufactured by Century, for its timeless design. “The clients splurged on a lot of pieces,” she says, “but I don’t ever want them to feel outdated.” Consider the pair of console tables in the living room: Their curving, half-moon silhouette seems at once both classic and contemporary—and their silver finish adds not just pop but a subtle wink of fun. In fact, multigenerational fun is a theme that repeats itself in this house, from its imaginative lighting to its theater room and adjoining bar to the basement’s bright pop-art pieces. There’s no doubt that it’s overcome its original limitations to become a multilayered home that magically marries fun, warmth, luxury and timeless high-end design, thanks to the homeowners’ original vision for what a family house should be...and the designer who helped them achieve it.

cohesive. The oversized satellite fixture in the foyer, for instance, which the designer describes as “modern and fun,” sets the tone for the entire design. Its blackened brass elements are echoed elsewhere—in the brass legs of the entryway bench, for example, and the kitchen’s brass light fixtures, cabinet pulls and faucet. The rectilinear fixture over the dining table is also brass, and with its forest of shiny spindles tipped with round white lights, it communicates a mixture of luxury and fun that was important to the homeowners. Given that the couple’s three children also live in this home, it needed to feel warm and comfortable, something that’s particularly evident in common areas such as the living room and the movie room in the basement. With its soaring ceilings, the living room could have registered as grand but cold, so Akguc worked to make it feel more inviting, incorporating soft furnishings such as the pair of relaxed velvet chairs, velvet pillows on a linen blend sofa and a thick, foot-pleasing area rug. The basement theater room, with its dark walls and ceiling and overstuffed furniture, feels cocoon-like—it’s easy to imagine sinking into those seats and not wanting

When Prometheus gave fire to humankind, he didn’t add step-bystep instructions for suspending a fireplace from the ceiling in the center of a room. He left that to Dominique Imbert, the designer who first forged a hanging fireplace in France in 1968. (Imbert had prepared for that breakthrough moment by earning a doctorate in sociology from the Sorbonne and working as an ethnologist in Alaska, an assistant chef in Manhattan and a history professor at a Paris lycée. Naturellement!) Now, as befits something that came from France in ’68, the hanging or floating fireplace is sparking a small revolution in interior design. It’s a focal point that creates literal and figurative warmth—and don’t be shocked if it ignites a conversation or two. Practical? The floating fireplace sure is. It maximizes square footage as it hangs from above, and it’s especially useful in tight quarters (and chilly locales) where a traditional brick fireplace recessed into the wall might not be doable. You need not fetch wood from outside, as most floating fireplaces use gas to generate heat. That’s more efficient than burning wood. Of course, a hanging fireplace is an aesthetic delight as well, and there are numerous options to fit your style: Choose from varied geometric shapes and materials, whether it’s a rustic ski lodge or a mid-century modern condo that you’re furnishing. New Jersey-based fireplace shops such as Complete Fireplace in Freehold and Wood Heat in Flemington can help bring your vision to life. Hanging fire? It’s a hot idea worth considering, at the very least. You can start by suspending your disbelief.
