CONTEMPORARY FURNISHINGS in a Queen Anne Victorian? It’s not as improbable as it sounds. For one Westfield, New Jersey, couple, all it took was a little bit of magic—literally—to pull together the disparate styles. A Victorian wasn’t the dwelling of choice for the couple, because their furniture seemed to call for something newer. They had lived in Westfield for 12 years and were looking to move to a larger residence within the town. The wife says they narrowed their search to a particular area, and when the home came on the market, they decided to throw away their rule book and give it a chance. It was a fortuitous decision. “There was something magical about the house,” the wife says. “Something that just touched us.” Part of the appeal was the ornate millwork and cast-bronze fireplaces. The dark, heavy woodwork also paired well with the couple’s collection of vintage magic posters and magic memorabilia. (He’s an avid hobbyist and frequently performs for charity functions.) The pieces harken to a bygone era, making them a match for the 127-yearold home. At the same time, the bold, graphic design of the posters suited the couple’s minimalist taste in furnishings. Still, they couldn’t envision how to make all the pieces work together. For that they needed a seer of a very particular sort. Enter Jennifer Watty of Jennifer Watty Interior Architecture of Westfield. Her challenge was to incorporate not only the couple’s magic

collection into the décor but also some of their recent purchases, which included Barbara Barry chairs covered in purple and pale green. Besides spiffing up the older areas of the home, Watty had a few tricks up her sleeve to link those rooms to a new addition the couple built, which included modern amenities like an up-to-date kitchen, a family room and a master suite. Metallic accents add enchantment throughout the home. In the dining room, for instance, Watty re-covered the family’s existing chairs in gold linen, and the hand-painted taffeta window treatments were embellished with gold and silver beads. She managed to lighten the mood further and introduce some whimsy by designing billowing silk swirls into the living room and dining room rugs. A common thread between the new and old parts of the structure is the posters, and Watty homed in on the shades of red that they all seem to share. She even pulled red into the throw pillows that are found on the purple and pale-green chairs in the living room. One pillow is fashioned from red-and-black crushed velvet; another sports an Asianinspired design that also incorporates yellow, blue and green into the pattern. “If you can believe it, it was all very dead—even with those posters,” Watty explains. But with the addition of the various brightly colored accessories, “it’s wonderful, bright, magical.” The wife agrees: “All of a sudden the living room went from being a pretty room to wow. Jen has an eye for color and texture to make a room come alive.” 8

where the wild things grow

Nature helps keep a Southampton garden interesting all year long

IN THE HAMPTONS, expansive lawns tend to be kept golf-course green, with hedges trimmed to perfection and peonies reigning as the garden flower of choice. But one transplant to the area wanted a more natural-looking landscape, so she turned to Eric Groft of Oehme, van Sweden & Associates in Washington, D.C., a firm known for avant-garde gardens. “She didn’t care if her neighbors thought she was crazy for doing a wild, natural garden in the middle of manicured Southampton,” says the landscape architect. The client, an empty nester with two grown daughters and grandchildren living in New York City, asked for surroundings reminiscent of the natural and rugged landscape in Maine, where she’d been living. It’s a style the landscape firm has dubbed “New American Garden”: Plants that offer four seasons of visual interest are used instead of those that shine for a short time and retreat. Ornamental grasses and evergreens are left to grow wild between trimmings. “Our gardens are always moving, ever-changing and full of color,” says Groft. Sustainability is also key, as all of the paving in this yard is from upstate New York and the plants are indigenous to eastern Long Island. The project began as a vacant lot one block from the ocean, and the home and grounds were born of a collaboration between Groft and architect Robert Lemmen of Lemmen Paul Associates in Sayville, New York. Now there’s a traditional shingle-style home surrounded by six gardens, a 20-foot by 60-foot pool, a pool house and terraces for entertaining. “What we try to do with all of our projects is create spaces adjacent to the house that relate to the interior,” says Groft. Therefore,

the gardens nearest the home are “a little bit more upscale” and include a lily pool with aquatic vegetation and bluestone terraces as well as vegetable and cutting-flower gardens in raised beds. A dining area off the kitchen is shaded by an elm tree and enveloped with herbs and roses. As the gardens extend away from the house, they transition into sweeps of silver grass, switch grass, fountain grasses and black-eyed Susans. The pool area—which has a more rustic feel with an irregular paving pattern and a timber frame-constructed arbor—includes a bold and colorful combination of bright pink Lady Baltimore hibiscus, golden-hued Karl Foerster feather reed grass and Nanho Blue Buddleia davidii—also known as the “butterfly bush” for attracting the winged creatures. The look, while manmade, actually owes much of its upkeep to nature. The gardens don’t require fertilizer, frequent watering or heavy maintenance. Only one quarter of an acre is left as lawn where the homeowner’s dogs can romp and grandchildren can play. Limiting the lawn area reduces the need for herbicides and mowing while lessening runoff that contributes to erosion and pollution. And there’s another plus. “The evergreens actually have a wonderful white flower in August,” says Groft, “that most people don’t realize because they keep them so manicured.” For this garden, it’s just one of the benefits of going a little wild.

For one Westchester family, the key ingredient in a home renovation was time

IS THERE ANY BETTER WAY to get to know a house than by living in it? A

few years ago, one young family, first-time homeowners new to Westchester County, decided there wasn’t. Having moved themselves and their two kids (with another on the way) from a two-bedroom, Upper East Side apartment to a 4,300-square-foot Colonial in Harrison, New York, they took a deep breath and let time be their ally. They knew they would want to change some things. “The house was filled to the brim with patterns, which was hard to get past,” recalls the wife. “But the property was beautiful, and I saw potential for renovation.” However, they also knew they weren’t ready for a major overhaul. They wanted to become acquainted with their new home. “Instead of redoing everything when we first moved in, we decided to live in the house to see what we wanted and needed,” the wife explains. Some initial updates couldn’t wait. She enlisted New York City designer Tracey Butler of b. home, who had been recommended by a friend, to help with a cosmetic facelift. “We stripped all materials reflective of the 1970s and did a minor remodel,” explains Butler. Wallpaper was removed, walls were painted in neutral tones, new carpeting was installed and window treatments were added. “We did the bare basics to make the house more livable,” the wife says. Fast-forward five years. After playing the waiting game and taking many notes, the homeowners were ready to give Butler a second call. They learned how the house worked—and how it didn’t—for their family of five. The layout of the Colonial was filled with rectangular rooms that weren’t very functional for the active clan. They decided to expand existing rooms and add about 1,000 square feet of living space. Among their redesign goals was to create a comfortable family room with plenty of room to romp. Having lived in the long, narrow space, the homeowners decided to reconfigure it into a square by knocking down interior PREVIEWS

walls, which also made the room feel much larger. “Since she wanted a lot of seating, a sectional sofa was the logical choice,” explains Butler. “I covered it in navy blue chenille for its durability and its ability to hide stains.” This plush piece is a favorite of the husband, an avid New York Giants fan, who hosts football gatherings in the fall. A custom cherry built-in with detailed grillwork houses the focal point of the pigskin parties: the large-screen television. The kitchen was another priority. The wife says, “I knew I wanted my family room open to the kitchen. It was closed off in the original layout of the house.” An open doorway connects the two spaces—perfect for watching over the kids or socializing with guests while entertaining. Butler designed an extra-long center island reminiscent of an old farmhouse table with a white Carrera top, which easily seats four. To make preparing and entertaining a cinch, there are two sinks, a Viking range, a 48-inch Sub-Zero stainless steel refrigerator, a Bosch dishwasher and two Fisher and Paykel dishwasher drawers. “I didn’t know it when we first moved in, but the house also needed a mud room where the kids could put their shoes, jackets and sports stuff,” she says. Butler brought in a lift-top bench with hooks and cubbies ideal for organizing the kids’ gear. Multi-colored, rough-cut slate lines the floor and hides any dirt tracked in. The sidewall’s main attraction is a 4-foot by 6-foot custom chalkboard, where mom lists the daily itinerary for the kids. These Westchester homeowners are now reaping the benefits from having taken their time. Besides the mudroom, a larger laundry room and a bathroom for pool guests are things they now enjoy that they wouldn’t have predicted they would need. Waiting turned out to be a smart strategy because, as they wife says, “there are always surprises.” 16

The bamboo piece is finished in a low-VOC water-based lacquer. Inspired by railroad tracks, Haute Surface ZigZag from Mio, $20 per set, includes 12 interlocking modules to spice up your table. Simplicity meets sustainability in the Montauk table lamp by Broad Beach Design, $975. Natural Portuguese cork is complemented by brass hardware and an ivory silk shade. Lightweight and durable, these cork inlays from Globus Cork, $10 to $12 per linear foot, come pre-assembled, pre-glued and prefinished for easy installation.
