Step through the grand front doors of Safavieh’s South Norwalk showroom, and you’ll immediately feel at home. The first lifestyle environment you’ll encounter is the relaxed one that we call urban casual.

“South Norwalk is our new model for all Safavieh showrooms,” says Michael Yaraghi, CEO of the home furnishings retailer. “The concept, in a word, is lifestyle.” The four-level store in South Norwalk, Connecticut, is separated into four distinct lifestyle concepts—one per level. “You walk through the front door into a relaxed lifestyle, which we call urban casual,” explains Yaraghi. Next comes transitional style, then traditional, and finally, contemporary. “The groupings make it easy for our customers to explore different looks.” What else is distinctive about the South Norwalk showroom? “The merchandising is done with a light hand,” says Yaraghi. “The store is not at all cluttered, so the room settings are reflective of actual open-plan homes.” There are lots of windows for an abundance of natural light, and the floors and walls have been kept neutral, so the furniture really stands out. As spacious as the store is, what you see on display is just a taste of what’s available. To help you visualize all of the possibilities, Safavieh created three large design centers within the store, where you can work with a design professional free of charge.

Each design center has large video monitors, so you can see every brand’s full collections online. In the old days, if you wanted to explore, say, coffee tables, you’d need to page through dozens of catalogs. Now, you and a designer can scroll through the options together on a big screen. Similarly, each design center has a full line of fabric samples, so there’s no need to run around the store looking for fabric books. “We’ve made the process of customizing furniture fast and efficient,” says Yaraghi. The showroom also features a lighting gallery, with all the best sconces, chandeliers and so forth grouped together. What’s more, Circa Lighting, a premier lighting brand, leases a showroom from Safavieh in the same building. And there’s more of what you expect in every Safavieh showroom—art and accessories; pillows and bedding; the latest fashions in rugs, hung for easy browsing; and an outdoor furniture gallery. “It’s really one-stop shopping for the home,” says Yaraghi, “all located near the intersection of Route 7 and Route 95 in South Norwalk—SoNo, as it’s known— Fairfield County’s premier destination for design.”

A wide front porch extends a warm, Southern welcome to this Palmetto Bluff home. Tall windows, shutters and a hip roof reflect the Lowcountry setting, as does the exterior’s coastal color palette of pale yellow, blue and white. The mahogany front door, sidelights and transom contribute to an elegant first impression.

For Tina and Michael Yaraghi, a vacation home has a job to do: create an atmosphere so peaceful and calming that you can feel your blood pressure drop the moment you arrive. That was her goal while designing the interior of the house she and her husband, Michael, built in Palmetto Bluff, a 20,000-acre gated community in Bluffton, S.C., not far from Hilton Head. Tina wanted their home to be elegant and to reflect its coastal setting, nestled in a fork of the May River, which flows a short distance out to the Atlantic Ocean. “We envisioned the home being very light and airy,” she says. “So everything is done in soft, light colors. It feels almost like a breath of fresh summer air.” Like all homes in Palmetto Bluff, the Yaraghis’ takes its design cues from Lowcountry architecture: tall win-

dows and transoms to catch breezes; tall ceilings to allow hot air to rise; an energyefficient metal roof pitched to shed rain efficiently; and a wide front porch to welcome friends and family. Inside, the living spaces of the home feature an open floor plan so conversation can flow easily when the couple is entertaining. “The kitchen is a nice space to prep and cook in,” says Tina. “It’s bright, and because of the open floor plan, it’s easy to socialize while I’m cooking.” One of Tina’s goals for the décor was to keep things simple. For example, in the kitchen she continued the Calacatta Gold honed marble tile backsplash clear up to the ceiling. “I’m really happy with how that turned out,” she says. “It gives the room a

finished look and took away decisions about paint. The fewer decisions the better in a vacation home.” With five bedrooms, and six full and two half baths, the home easily accommodates guests, even large family gatherings. The master suite and one guest suite are located at opposite ends of the house on the first floor, with three additional guest suites upstairs, so privacy is never an issue. “I love this home because, literally, the minute I walk in I feel all stress melt away,” says Tina. “It’s a very welcoming, peaceful space. And the lake views are beautiful—you see the water right from the entry, and that’s a natural decompressor. This home is everything that a retreat should be.”

Situated on 20,000 acres at the confluence of three rivers and shared with a wide range of flora and fauna, Palmetto Bluff is a residential community that makes it easy to appreciate the healing power of nature. “Palmetto Bluff speaks to every one of my senses,” says Tina Yaraghi, lead designer for The Enchanted Home, who, together with her husband, Michael, owns a home there. “You go through those gates and you’re immediately greeted by 100-year-old live oaks dripping with Spanish moss. It’s like a tonic.” The responsibility of protecting the area’s natural resources—including lush maritime forests, marshland and winding tidal creeks—falls to the community’s Conservancy team, whose mission is to provide education and resources to help property owners build sustainably. “I love to ride my bike around the water, morning and evening,” says Tina, who notes that Palmetto Bluff also offers boating, fishing, paddle-boarding and kayaking, as well as golf, tennis, shooting and equestrian sports. For arts and culture enthusiasts, there are workshops, lectures, classes, field trips and more. The community boasts its own hotel (Montage Palmetto Bluff, which also offers cottages and homes for short-term stays), and several of its own restaurants and shops. For those who want to explore farther afield, Palmetto Bluff is a short drive from Bluffton and about 30 minutes from both Hilton Head and Savannah. “In Palmetto Bluff, there are stunning natural views everywhere you look,” says Tina. “It’ a very community-minded place where you can be as private or as social as you want.”

One might think monumental interior space calls for monumental furnishings, but architect Mies van der Rohe had it right: Sometimes less is more. The lobby of The Beacon’s luxury condominium residences at Garvies Point in Glen Cove, N.Y. is a stunning modern box (which no doubt owes a debt to Mies himself) that soars 20 feet high. Safavieh designer Iris Carias, who’s based nearby in the company’s Glen Cove showroom, used a light touch in furnishing the lobby so as not clutter the clean sight lines or compete with the architectural features, which include a cantilevered bronze staircase that ascends a sheer marble wall. There are two identical seating areas in the lobby. Each comprises three oversized, transitional wing chairs that look like a hybrid of porter’s chairs and something plucked from the bridge of an intergalactic cruiser. These oversized chairs are centered around simple, polished nickel coffee tables. Because of the need for large scale, the wingchairs were custom made, as was the area rug on which they rest. “You’ll notice we used colors that are bright and

cool—a lot of blues—to bring the hues of the adjacent salt water indoors,” says Carias. “We also had fun mixing metals—chrome, brass and bronze.” The lobby is just one of several amenity spaces at The Beacon. At the top of that bronze staircase is a cavernous lounge with a dramatic fire feature, a grand piano and abundant seating. One end of the lounge is a library, with solitary seating for reading, as well as group seating for socializing or even playing cards. “It’s meant to be home-like, and decidedly unlike a public library,” says Carias. At the opposite end of the lounge is the clubroom, with its long bar and equally long live-edge dining table. “The palette here is quite neutral,” notes Carias, “but we punctuated it with bright wall art and two red sofas, because this is, after all, a party space.” Beyond the clubroom is a game room, featuring a custom billiard table and two seating areas—one facing a fireplace—for added coziness. And beyond the game room is a screening room. “The goal was to create a modern space—not a traditional movie-theater lookalike,” says Carias. “And again, we wanted a home-like feel rather than a commercial look, so we used huge sectional sofas and cocktail tables.” The gray and blue color scheme pays homage to the window views of open water. With her Safavieh know-how, Carias succeeded in making The Beacon’s large amenity spaces feel homey, much like a private club, all the while reinforcing the coastal sense of place.

As soon as the owners of this home in Purchase, N.Y. gave Melissa Sarhane some clues to their taste and vision, the Safavieh designer was off and running. “John and Georgette wanted modern glamour,” she explains. “They liked blues, creams and gold. That was all I needed to know to get busy.” The project began with a formal living room. Sarhane, who is based at Safavieh’s Hartsdale, N.Y., showroom, used a Venetian plaster treatment on the walls to create a rich, cloudy blue. Then she moved on to furniture. “The room is very large, so we did a custom-sized sofa,” she notes. “Other than that, we wanted the furniture to have a light footprint. For example, we wanted literally to see through certain pieces, so we selected a drinks table and a cocktail table with glass tops on thin gold bases.” Ottomans also suited this purpose; being low, they don’t obstruct views. Sarhane flanked the cocktail table with a pair of ottomans upholstered in cobalt blue cotton velvet, providing a pop of color. She added another pair of ottomans—these with fluffy sheepskin tops on light gold bases—beneath a console table. The sheepskin adds texture and anchors the console, creating an interesting tableau at one end of the room. “The real drama here is created by the billowy blue walls and the layers of gold accents,” says Sarhane, “so we kept the furniture and rug pattern free. The rug is a simple, silk, custom-sized rug—a light, luxurious backdrop to a glamorous scene.” Accessories to finish the room include pearlescent ceramics, crystal flower arrangements, books and a chunky crochet blanket—one of Georgette’s distinctive creations—draped over a chair. Next up was the library, for which Sarhane had dual goals. First, it had to be comfortable, as the homeowners spend a lot of time in this room—he working, she reading and creating her crochet designs. Second, the designer aimed to tie this room visually to the adjacent living room. Because the existing wood paneling was left in place, a traditional library look that could become oppressive, she brightened up the space with contemporary, Art Decoinfluenced chairs upholstered in a creamy fabric, as well as a creamy, vanity-like writing desk. Another adjacent space, the entrance hall, has strong vertical lines. To counterbalance them, Sarhane chose an elongated, horizontal statement piece—a console with intricately patterned wood and gold accents. Reminiscent of Old Hollywood, this gently curved console provides a visual preview of what’s to be found in the formal living room and dining room. “For the foyer, I specified a transitional, hand-woven area rug to spice up the dark wood and textures of the console,” she explains. “The rug makes the home more inviting as you enter. Except for some accessories atop the console, these two pieces were all the room needed.”

You wouldn’t know it at a glance, but this airy Manhattan home is the product of downsizing. With just one son left under their wing—and he with “one foot out the door”—the homeowners were near-empty-nesters, so they traded a Greenwich Village apartment on lower Fifth Avenue for a loft in Tribeca. “The couple didn’t want to bring much with them,” says designer Rona Landman, “except for their really good art collection.” And so she was given the brief of creating a home more or less from scratch. One full floor in a late 19th-century spice warehouse, the loft preserved some charming architectural details—a massive wood beam supported by iron columns and a wall of exposed raw brick. Landman’s team actually distressed the brick even further, then layered it with a contemporary fireplace with a sleek stone surround. In furnishing the space, her first rule was to keep the choices neutral so the art would stand out. Her second rule was to use spare window treatments, so natural light would be maximized. Beyond that, eclecticism reigned. Much of the furniture and most of the accessories came from Safavieh. Was it difficult to please the owners, with their discerning eye for art? No, says, Landman, but one item was a tough sell: a pure white, real alpaca rug. “This natural rug is incredibly durable, but the homeowners suspected that it wasn’t,” she says. “We tested it for stain resistance, and it passed.” You might say the thick, luxe rug provides the perfect platform for the main living area of a modern loft.

COASTAL CHARMERS The bucolic, waterside setting of The Beacon at Garvies Point belies its location. Situated on a tidal creek and Long Island Sound, Garvies Point is a mixed-use development in Glen Cove, N.Y. with abundant amenities and planned ferry service to Manhattan. The jewel in this crown is The Beacon, a luxury condominium building that offers private homes with hotel-like services and amenity spaces. The developer of Garvies Point, RXR Realty, is known for other luxury projects in the area, such as The Ritz-Carlton Residences, Long Island, North Hills. The creative brief for this model home hit the sweet spot for Eric Lysdahl, an interior designer based in Safavieh’s Glen Cove, N.Y. showroom. “The Beacon is a luxury building, so naturally enough, my instructions were to give the space a luxury look,” recounts Lysdahl. “I brought my Upper East Side of Manhattan sensibility to the project—as I do to just about every project,” he laughs. Because The Beacon is on the water, the designer’s point of view was to evoke a late 1930s ocean liner. He had in mind the SS Normandie, which was launched in 1935 as the largest and fastest passenger ship afloat. The Normandie also boasted lavish interiors designed in the Art Deco and Streamline Moderne styles. Echoes of these styles can be seen especially in the bedroom, whose curved mahogany furniture channels the stateroom of a trans-Atlantic liner, as well as the maritime setting that can be seen outside the windows. For the main living space, Lysdahl chose a console with doors finished in verre églomisé, the time-honored French technique of painting and gilding the reverse side of glass to produce a mirror finish. Here the technique is brought up to date with a pattern that suggests an Asian landscape. In the dining area, he chose a restrained table and chairs so as not to fight with the drama of the chandelier, a multi-tiered confection of polished, sliced agate and gilded metal. Flanking the dining table is a symmetrical arrangement of matching Chinese jars that sit on streamlined pedestals. The pedestals are wood covered in Venetian plaster and topped with slabs of polished crystal—another nod to the great pre-war passenger ships that plied the North Atlantic.

The coastal setting of The Beacon at Garvies Point reminds designer Karin Krinsky of the Hamptons, where she has lot of experience designing second homes. She drew on that familiar, beachy vibe for this model suite. The hypothetical client presented to Krinsky, who is based at Safavieh’s Manhasset, N.Y. showroom, was a downsizing couple with family that comes often to visit. This called for a practical approach to a cozy apartment, so Krinsky turned the second bedroom into an office/sitting room that could double as a guest room. She chose organic materials and forms to reflect the surrounding landscape and seascape. This included a soft green convertible daybed, a raw grasscloth-covered dresser and a white linen-covered desk, all of which suggest the native grasses that surround The Beacon and the adjacent 56-acre Garvies Point Preserve. Walls covered in snakeskin vinyl are adorned by laser-cut metal flower sculptures, and a Depression glass chandelier completes the look. In the master bedroom, Krinsky chose a unified palette that she calls driftwood gray. The look is weathered and casual—except for the use of luxurious bed linens because, she asks, who doesn’t love luxurious bedding? Adding to the coastal motif are the dresser and nightstands, which feature artisanal hammered metal pulls on “greige” wood. The main space of the apartment is designed around a painting of blue concentric circles on a light gray background. “That was the first thing I selected,” says Krinsky, “blue being my signature color. All of the accent pieces in the space key off this artwork.” She placed a swivel chair by the window so conversation could, well, swivel between the kitchen and seating areas. That’s just one more of the practical touches that make this modern, casual, coastal home eminently livable.

Every window of this model home in The Beacon at Garvies Point in Glen Cove, N.Y. has a view of the water—whether the swimming pool or the marina or Long Island Sound. That made design choices relatively easy, for Susan Mandel and Vincent Paganelli, designers at Safavieh’s Glen Cove showroom. “Our concept was to use the outside surroundings as an interior landscape,” says Mandel, “and thereby create a soothing, calming retreat.” Organic elements were the order of the day. In the master bedroom, they can be seen in the capiz shell veneer on the dresser and nightstands, alabaster lamps and candleholders, and shadow boxes containing specimen agate. A soft Ralph Lauren rug and luxury bedding keep the room light and airy. In the guest bedroom, which doubles as an office, the glass top of the desk appears to float on slat-like metal supports. “We used non-solid forms wherever we could,” Paganelli explains, “because we like to avoid adding visual weight in smaller rooms.” A large sculptural mirror finishes this space. Natural materials come into play again in the main living area. These include mother of pearl veneer on a console and capiz shells on the coffee table. One of the most pleasing forms in the apartment is the curve of the dining chairs. “I chose upholstered chairs for comfort,” says Mandel, “and upholstery can look heavy, but the klismos-inspired shape is so light and graceful that nothing is sacrificed.” A tree-form chandelier above these elegant chairs is accented by crystal drops, and a painting of sailboats echoes the masts of actual sailboats glimpsed in the marina outside the window. In the master bedroom (opposite top), Susan Mandel and Vincent Paganelli used seashells and crystalline stones, including alabaster and agate. The office-cum-guest room (opposite bottom) features a desk that’s “see-through”— a desirable quality in a cozy space. In the dining area (above), the klismos-inspired chairs are light and graceful, sacrificing nothing to the fact that they’re upholstered for comfort.

As you continue to adjust to the new normal, try something different this winter: Pick a color palette and stick to it. What doesn’t fit the bill goes back to the attic or gets a fresh coat of paint. This year, think winter white. It’s the epitome of modernity, elegance and balance. Mixing snow white with traces of green, black and silver is on trend and très chic. To bring greenery and life into your dining room, florists recommend hanging an oversized wreath. Decorate it with items found in nature such as pinecones, acorns and berries, to enchant guests. Flank the hearth and doorway with preserved juniper topiary trees for an instant dose of warmth and intimacy. For your holiday table, choose crisp, white linens and layer them with a wide, black ribbon or runner down the center of the table and across at each place setting. This will add dimension to the table and visually anchor each setting. When it comes to flatware, glassware and china, you don’t need to have the best; you just need to know how to use what you’ve got. Don’t be afraid to mix like-colored pieces—whites with off-whites, stainless steel with silver, and mercury glass or crystal with glass. Place your white china on a black, silver or white charger—layering adds dimension to the table. To add sparkle, use clear glassware and stemware, and mix styles to vary the height and look. For centerpieces, keep the botanicals simple and seasonal. The velvety texture of Vendela roses and silvery gray Tillandsia is warm and wintry and helps create the mood for a luxurious cold-weather soirée. For an intimate dinner party, keep the arrangements under 12 inches high as not to disrupt the festive repartee. Bring the black-and-white theme from your mailed invitation through to the place card and menu—it’s really chic, and your guests will appreciate the detail. Keep the design simple and modern, and make things easy for yourself by having your local stationer do them for you. Place a menu on top of each napkin, then wrap the napkin and menu with ribbon or a paper strip that matches the invite. Top it all off with a fresh artichoke to add unexpected texture, dimension and a punch of color. Lastly, make sure the lighting is just right. If you don’t have dimmers on your fixtures, just use candles (always unscented around food) aided by the glow from an illuminated room nearby. Cluster large mercury glass pieces and other silver objects together to bring a little sparkle to darker areas of the room. Carry elements of this onto your table by way of mercury glass votives and a few small silver objects, and you’ll have plenty of sparkle to go around during this festive season.

Of Safavieh’s two Manhattan showrooms, Chelsea and Soho, the new Chelsea location could be called the flagship. It’s the successor to the famous Broadway store, which Safavieh occupied for almost 25 years. “As our brand grew, we became frustrated by that space because we couldn’t show enough of the variety we carry,” says Darioush Yaraghi, vice president of the home furnishings retailer. “There was just not enough square footage and not a lot of street frontage.” Chelsea solved both problems. The new location occupies the length of an entire block on Seventh Avenue, from 15th to 16th streets. Arched, floor-to-ceiling windows span the block, making the whole storefront a window display and flooding the interior with natural light. The store actually consists of two pre-war buildings that have been sensitively combined. One has arched ceilings, for example, while the other has exposed wood beams. Each possesses a distinct architectural feel, and the merchandise has been arranged to match. “We wanted our products to showcase the buildings, as well as the buildings to showcase the products,” says Yaraghi. “For the ‘lofty’ building, the one with the arched ceilings, we created an urban casual feel,” he continues. “We tore out a decrepit staircase and put in iron mesh,

contemporary stairs. The ground-floor design center has all-glass walls and black-painted beams, making it visually separate but complementary. The casual vibe continues on the lower level, where we installed galleries to showcase the best products of various top furniture brands, with a special emphasis on their custom capabilities.” The adjacent building, which is part of one continuous ground-floor space, has what Yaraghi calls a farmhouse feel. More modern in its lines, this building fittingly showcases Safavieh’s modern collection, from midcentury on. Safavieh’s famous rug department is also located here. “We took advantage of the space to curate the rug collection,” says Yaraghi. “On the upper level we’re promoting a modern aesthetic because that’s of most interest to our customers. On the lower level, you’ll find silks, classics and antiques.” How has the public reacted to the new Chelsea showroom? “It’s gratifying that people ‘get’ what we’re trying to do here. The number of shoppers has been steadily increasing. It’s a large, open space, so social distancing is easy.”

Alexa Hampton The designer of elegant, classically inspired interiors shares advice and some of her favorite things. Alexa, you’ve designed city apartments, country houses, private airplanes, yachts—just about every kind of residential interior. What’s the best advice you ever received about design? That being trendy is a waste of time. I don’t know if it was articulated in exactly those words, but that was the basic thought. Who are your style influences? Mark Hampton, Madeleine Castaigne, Renzo Mongiardjno and David Hicks for starters. Some people are intimidated by the project of furnishing a home. What would you say to them? Work with a professional and don’t be too hard on yourself for needing that help. A home design project is a lot of work. What are your favorite current design trends? I’m glad that mixing patterns and colors is so vital right now.

What is your favorite piece in the furniture collection you designed for Theodore Alexander? That’s an impossible question to answer! Truly impossible. I honestly love them all and even own some, such as the Alberto chairs. What’s your favorite piece of furniture that you own? I have a pair of 18th-century bergères au chapeau gendarme that I love. They have been with me for a long time. You’ve designed many different lines for the home—furniture, lighting, fabrics, pillows, bedding, table linens, hardware, mantels, architectural moldings and flooring. What’s next? I would love to design a boutique hotel!
