DEAR FRIENDS, The holiday season is always one of reflection and gratitude. Thank you for allowing us to share in your special moments this past year. Whether you were celebrating a huge milestone or a small moment, we are happy that Tapper’s was able to help bring joy to those that you love. We are incredibly appreciative of your continued support and look forward to celebrating your special occasions in the years ahead. LEORA AND MARK TAPPER OUTSIDE ROLEX DURING BASELWORLD 2018, BASEL SWITZERLAND

In this issue of Tapper’s Magazine, you will meet our new Jewelry Stars, learn about the latest trends and get plenty of gift-giving ideas. As we reflect on this past year, we have many things to be thankful for–our wonderful guests, our dedicated associates, and the charitable organizations that we support throughout Metro Detroit. This is our 6th year giving back to the community through our Jewelry Stars campaign, and our 27th year running our annual coat drive for families in need. Last year, we collected more than 2,000 coats that were distributed to local charities throughout our community, and we could not have done this without your help. We also celebrated the one-year anniversary of our new Somerset store, which was recognized by Instore Magazine’s, America’s Coolest Store Contest. We look forward to the same success as we embark on the redesign of our West Bloomfield location in 2019. We traveled the globe to find several exclusive brands that were added to our jewelry portfolio including Gucci, Susanne Kalan and Maria Tash to showcase the latest trends and designs in the market. We also launched the LKT Collection, designed by Leora Klein Tapper, which showcases thoughtfully designed pieces with a modern twist. We look forward to working with you in the coming year to continue to spread joy to those that you love. Wishing you peace, love, health and joy this season and beyond.

WHAT THE JUDGES SAY “This store has an incredibly welcoming atmosphere. The lavish bar, comfortable seating, charging stations and beautiful surroundings all beckon me to stay awhile and enjoy.” - JILL MAURER

“It looks like Tapper’s goes out of the way to create experiences like the root beer float “signature” drinks and the TV wall. I think their modern decor is welcoming and on trend.” - KATHERINE BODOH Tapper’s took 2nd place out of 60 jewelry stores competing in Instore Magazine’s 17th Annual America’s Coolest Stores Contest in the “Big Cool” category (six or more fulltime employees). Winners were selected based on their background, marketing, interior, exterior, online presence and individuality. “The recent renovation of Tapper’s Somerset Collection location was a perfect opportunity to enter a contest of this nature,” said Mark Tapper, President. The entire store was remodeled with the customer experience in mind. It features unique amenities including a large 165” digital screen and a beverage

bar, which serves Michigan craft beer and root beer floats while surrounded by a living plant wall. “Guys will come in and have a beer while their wives walk around the store, and we’ll talk to them about watches. It gives clients a place to relax and interact with us. I want the guests in our stores to feel as if they are guests in my own home,” added Tapper. With its Rolex shop-in-shop, expansive bridal bar and customer-facing showcases, the entire footprint was designed to make browsing easier and more enjoyable. “We invite you to come in and experience our award-winning store for yourself.”

“My goodness, these folks should be a case study in how to ‘do it right’. Know your audience, know who you are, make it local, keep them coming back often, market with gusto and make sure you keep the design tight. Love them.” - LAURA DAVIS

allowing the wearer to easily increase the bracelet length by approximately 5 mm for additional comfort. Datejust 36 watches now utilize calibre 3235, a consummate demonstration of Rolex technology offering fundamental gains in terms of precision, power reserve, resistance to shocks and magnetic fields, convenience and reliability. It incorporates the Chronergy escapement patented by Rolex, which combines high energy efficiency with great dependability. Made of nickel-phosphorus, this escapement is insensitive to magnetic interference. An optimized blue Parachrom hairspring is fitted to the oscillator, the true heart of the watch. Manufactured by Rolex in an exclusive paramagnetic alloy, it is up to 10 times more precise than a traditional hairspring in case of shocks. Calibre 3235 is equipped with a self-winding module via a Perpetual rotor. Thanks to its new barrel architecture and the escapement’s superior efficiency, the power reserve of calibre 3235 extends to approximately 70 hours. A waterproof Oyster case provides optimum protection for the Datejust 36’s highprecision movement. Like all Rolex watches, the new-generation Datejust 31 and 36 models carry the Superlative Chronometer certification. This exclusive designation testifies that each watch has successfully undergone a series of tests conducted by Rolex in its own laboratories according to its own criteria, which exceed watchmaking norms and standards. The certification applies to the fully assembled watch (after casing the movement), guaranteeing superlative performance in terms of precision, power reserve, waterproofness and self-winding. The precision of a Rolex Superlative Chronometer after casing is of the order of −2 /+2 seconds per day, or more than twice that required of an official chronometer. The Superlative Chronometer status is symbolized by the green seal that comes with every Rolex watch and is coupled with an international five-year guarantee. Thanks to its timeless functions and aesthetics, the Rolex Datejust will never go out of fashion. Rolex Oyster Perpetual Datejust 31 with white mother-of-pearl dial, 45 brilliant-cut diamonds, President bracelet in 18K yellow gold, scratchresistant sapphire crystal with Cyclops lens over date and 55-hour power reserve. Waterproof to 100 meters; Rolex Oyster Perpetual Datejust 36 with champagne-color sunray finish dial, 10 diamonds in 18K yellow gold settings, Oyster bracelet in Yellow Rolesor, scratchresistant sapphire crystal with Cyclops lens over date and 70-hour power reserve. Waterproof to 100 meters.

TAPPER’S

Launched in 1945, the Rolex Datejust was the first self-winding waterproof chronometer wristwatch to display the date in a window at 3 o’clock on the dial, consolidating all the major innovations that Rolex had contributed to modern watchmaking until that point. Its style has spanned eras while still retaining the enduring codes that make it one of the most recognizable watches of today. In 2018 Rolex introduced a new generation of the Oyster Perpetual Datejust 31, with redesigned case sides and lugs. Available in 18K white, yellow or Everose gold, the models are equipped for the first time with calibre 2236, a self-winding mechanical movement entirely developed and manufactured by Rolex. Insensitive to magnetic fields, its silicon Syloxi hairspring provides great stability in the face of temperature variations and remains up to 10 times more precise than a traditional hairspring in case of shocks. Calibre 2236 is equipped with a self-winding module via a Perpetual rotor and offers a power reserve of approximately 55 hours. The new Datejust 31 watches are fitted on President bracelets, benefiting from a concealed attachment system and ensuring seamless visual continuity between the bracelet and the case. Each also has a concealed folding Crownclasp and includes ceramic inserts inside the links to enhance flexibility and longevity. Rolex’s Oyster Perpetual Datejust 36 also has been relaunched this year in both Everose Rolesor (combining Oystersteel and 18-karat Everose gold) and yellow Rolesor (combining Oystersteel and 18-karat yellow gold) versions, each available with a large selection of dials. Rolesor, the combination of gold and steel on a Rolex watch, has been a signature feature of the brand since 1933, when the name was registered. It is an auspicious meeting of two metals: one noble and precious, attractive for its lustre and stability, the other highly resistant, known for its strength and reliability. All of these qualities perfectly mirror the elegance and performance that come together in a Rolex watch. On the Rolesor versions of the new Datejust 36, the bezel, winding crown and center bracelet links are in 18-karat gold (Everose or yellow), while the case and the outer links of the bracelet are in Oystersteel. Available on Oyster or Jubilee bracelets, they also are equipped with an Oysterclasp and include the Easylink rapid extension system (patented by Rolex in 1996),

2018 MARKS THE 55TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE ICONIC TAG HEUER CARRERA COLLECTION. Since its debut in 1963, this model has become synonymous with motorsports timekeeping. The collection takes its name from the legendary week-long Carrera Panamericana road race held in Mexico during the 1950s, a thrilling competition revived in 1988 as an annual rally for pre-1955 collectors’ vehicles, for which TAG Heuer serves as both partner and Official Timekeeper. TAG Heuer has recently unveiled two new stylish, vintage-inspired timepieces featuring the TAG Heuer Carrera Calibre 16 chronograph with a 41mm diameter. The black version is adorned with a magnificent perforated black leather strap with red stitching, and the blue version features a steel

bracelet for maximum comfort. With touches of red, the colors, contrasts and position of the counters are all clear references to motorsports. The two sporty models feature a vintage signature produced by the three white counters, which stand out starkly against a dial featuring a white flange with a 60-second scale. The seconds counter is at 9 o’clock, the minute counter at 12 o’clock and the hour counter at 6 o’clock. The bezel is made from ceramic and features a tachymeter scale—a crucial component on an automotive chronograph. Both models are beautiful additions to the TAG Heuer Carrera collection.

DAVID YURMAN OFFERS MODERN UPDATES TO HIS BELOVED COLLECTIONS.

12

TAPPER’S

From his early years creating jewelry, David Yurman’s palette has included uniquely cut gemstones in unconventional hues. This season, Yurman revisits his signature designs, on some pieces subtly lowering center gemstones to give a more feminine silhouette, and elsewhere, adding statements of individuality with unique symbols, meaningful motifs or boldly hued enamel. Of particular note are updated versions of the iconic Renaissance Cable bracelet, which brings together a striking blend of classical and contemporary sensibilities. The trademarked design—one that has appeared on the wrists of celebrities and tastemakers for more than 30 years—conveys casual elegance and merges fashion and sculpture into fine jewelry. The classic returns in new silhouettes that layer and stack with authentic glamour. A new 5mm width is offered in gold with custom-cut gemstones of rich colors that provide fresh ways to express your personal style. Here, we present three more collection highlights: David Yurman’s newest jewelry that seamlessly layers with the other pieces already in your collection yet makes a statement all its own.

ACC.TAPP.Yurman.indd 12

10/23/18 6:18 PM

TIDES The designs in this collection are contemporary, sculptural forms that express the rhythms of ocean tides and the continuous motion of waves. The blue topaz set in rows of sterling silver and pavé white diamonds evokes the serenity of crystal seas.

ACC.TAPP.Yurman.indd 13

PURE FORM This signature collection celebrates metal’s sculptural properties and explores its range of textures. Pure Form pieces have an innovative carving that gives the illusion of the iconic David Yurman Cable bracelet unwinding, widening and dissolving. By juxtaposing sculpted Cable with smooth metal, the designs create dynamic artistic statements. Layer on Pure Form pieces with your favorite classic Cable bracelets.

CHÂTELAINE Châtelaine continues as a celebration of glamour with sparkling diamonds and sterling silver. It’s one of the brand’s signature collections and a perfect fusion of David and Sybil Yurman’s combined art: the marriage of a sculptor and a painter, which has been on display in some form since the couple began working together in 1969.

MEN’S WEDDING BANDS

14

TAPPER’S

David Yurman’s men’s bands range from classic to extremely expressive, executed in both precious and innovative metals, including black titanium, forged carbon and colored diamonds. The collection was created to address the lack of options on the market outside of the classic white- and yellow-gold simple bands. According to the David Yurman design team, it has become increasingly important to grooms to have different styles to choose from so they can find what fits their personalities. Men are now buying multiple bands rather than just one, which better allows them to express themselves and adapt to changing occasions and circumstances.

TUDOR brings the PAST into the PRESENT with the

TIMEPIECES

BLACK BAY BRONZE Tudor has identified the historic uses of its watches and reinterpreted them in their latest models. Far from simply being an identical re-release of a classic, the models in the Heritage line bring the past into the present, with the aesthetic codes that contributed to the reputation of historic models preserved and instilled into contemporary timepieces. The 60 years that followed the launch of the original 7922 saw the constant improvement of the TUDOR divers’ watch, and each model gained unanimous acclaim from professionals in the field, including some of the greatest military navies in the world. It is this relationship with these navies which evokes ideas of travel and adventure that the Black Bay Bronze celebrates.

HANDS

The characteristic angular hands, known as “snowflake”, are borrowed from the watches delivered in large quantities to the French National Navy in the 1970s.

MOVEMENT

This is a variant of the Tudor manufactured movement developed specifically to equip the Black Bay Bronze model. Slightly larger in diameter and displaying hours, minutes and seconds functions, it bears the reference MT5601, in which “MT” stands for “Manufacture TUDOR”.

CROWN

Inherited from the famous 7924 reference of 1958, the particularly prominent winding crown, dubbed “Big Crown” by collectors, is featured.

STRAP

CASE

A crucial characteristic is the imposing bronze case which is an aesthetic reference to the use of bronze in historic ships and other diving equipment. The visual effect is that of a patinated object that could have battled the waves on its owner’s wrist for many years.

TAPPER’S

The French Navy had TUDOR watches delivered without bracelets and then fitted them with their own straps. One of them, found on a period watch, was made of elastic recovered from a French rescue parachute. Reinterpreted, the beige and brown woven jacquard strap descends from the ultra-functional relic, recognizable by its central yellow thread.

Actor Orlando Bloom’s collection of rare vintage luxury watches has included this Rolex Explorer II “Orange Hand” with a fat strap.

10/26/18 4:19 PM

FACE TIME Orlando Bloom’s watch collection would be admired by even the most serious collectors. These three timepieces are among the highlights.

Bloom’s vintage 1950s Rolex Milgauss 6543 was designed in the atomic age and was Rolex’s first watch made for people working within magnetic fields.

BRITISH ACTOR ORLANDO BLOOM IS MAKING THIS ERA HIS OWN. YOU CAN DEPEND ON HIM FOR A SHOW WORTH WATCHING—OR A WATCH WORTH SHOWING. By Daria Meoli Put it down, perhaps, to a sense of timing. At 22, days after graduating from London’s Guildhall School of Music & Drama, Orlando Bloom was cast in Peter Jackson’s epic—and epically successful—Lord of the Rings trilogy. The Canterbury, England, native immediately followed up his role as Legolas by playing Will Turner in Disney’s Pirates of the Caribbean franchise. Bloom has described his early career as feeling like a “rocket to the moon.” Now at 41, Bloom spends less time swashbuckling and more time on smaller passion projects and raising his 7-year-old son, Flynn Christopher Bloom. On-screen, Bloom has some of his biggest star turns accessorized with swords and elf ears; off-screen, as befits a master of timing, he’s an enthusiastic luxury watch collector. Bloom has a penchant for vintage Rolexes, and his collection includes an ultra-rare 1950s Rolex Milgauss 6543 with black rotating bezel and a vintage Rolex Submariner 6538 Big Crown, the model worn by Sean Connery as James Bond in Dr. No, From Russia with Love and Goldfinger. Proving that a man is never fully dressed without a watch, Bloom paired a burgundy Prada smoking

ACC.TAPP.OrlandoBloom.REV.indd 21

jacket and black tuxedo pants with his Bremont AC1 when he escorted on-again-off-again girlfriend Katy Perry to the 2016 Met Gala. Bloom is a practicing Buddhist and a humanitarian. In 2009 he auctioned off several of his valuable watches to raise funds for UNICEF, a global children’s charity for which he is a goodwill ambassador. Pieces on the block included a 1960s Breitling Navitimer 806 and a 1973 Rolex Explorer II 1655 (nicknamed the “Steve McQueen Rolex,” despite a lack of evidence to prove that the screen legend ever owned this model). Months after the auction, a less altruistic organization took possession of Bloom’s prized collection. During the infamous “Bling Ring” crime spree, a group of teenagers from the Hollywood Hills broke into Bloom’s Los Angeles home and stole his watches. Eventually, police apprehended the teens, and Bloom’s watches were returned. The incident hasn’t diminished the actor’s passion for collecting. Whether he is wearing a Patek Philippe Nautilus while out to lunch with Flynn or an IWC Big Pilot 5002 while taking red carpet selfies on Instagram, Bloom continues to mark time in style. And his day is far from done.

Bloom’s IWC Big Pilot 5002 is impressively large at 46mm and has a simple military design that makes it a standout.

One of the most famous Rolex designs, the Submariner is known as the James Bond watch and is built for adventure. This diver’s watch has the ability to resist water pressure down to 1,000 feet.

breitling’s navitimer 8 A TRIBUTE TO ONE OF WATCHMAKING’S GREATEST LEGACIES. Breitling, famous for its chronographs and its strong link to aviation, has just launched a new pilot’s watch collection: the Navitimer 8. The 8 in its name is a nod to the Huit Aviation Department, which was set up in 1938 to produce cockpit instruments as well as classic pilot’s watches for civilian and military use. At the time, Willy Breitling chose the name “Huit,” the French word for eight, as a reference to the eight-day power reserve offered by its storied cockpit instruments. Georges Kern, Breitling’s CEO since the summer of 2017, is particularly excited about the new product line. “With the Navitimer 8,” he says, “we are honoring not only our rich heritage but also our pioneering role in building chronographic instruments. But while the Navitimer 8 pays tribute to our past, it also does something considerably more important. It opens the door to a very exciting future.” The Navitimer 8 family introduces five distinct models that are worthy heirs to watchmaking’s richest aviation tradition, drawing heavily on Breitling’s design DNA and the technical features of the first board clocks and pilot’s wristwatches as well as on the Huit Aviation Department’s commitment to quality.

Each of the five new models in the collection expresses a design code —conceived down to the minutest detail—with a high recognition value. Guy Bove, creative director at Breitling, who fully immersed himself in the design of the board clocks and wristwatches created by the Huit Aviation Department, described the inspiration behind the Navitimer 8’s exterior design cues as follows: “With the Navitimer 8, we wanted to create a watch that was in line with our vision for the brand’s future, but which would also pay tribute to the great Breitling watches of the early to mid-20th century. From a design perspective, it occupies a unique position between Huit’s onboard clocks and the Navitimer.” The new watches resurrect some of the design values of the Huit Aviation Department’s onboard clocks—especially in terms of the dials and bezels—as well as Breitling’s iconic pilot’s watch, Reference 768, with the rotating bezel and distinctive triangular pointer that made it a favorite among pilots. Just as important were the luminous hands against black dials, a combination that offered easy readability in any lighting conditions, and which also contributed to Breitling’s aviation heritage. The Navitimer 8 watches recall the uncompromising flair of that earlier era.

Diamonds come in all shapes and sizes, from traditional to more distinctive shapes. Each shape is gorgeous and is completely a matter of personal taste.

A fancy color diamond’s size and shape can influence its color. How? Put simply, in large diamonds light can travel further, creating a richer color. What’s more, certain cut styles can intensify color.

The Tapper’s Signature Cut Our signature diamond is unlike any other diamond in the world. The Bright Crystal Diamond in Tapper’s Signature Cut sparkles and radiates light in an entirely new way, due to their unique 81 facets rather than the standard 58. These additional facets reflect more light, giving the Tapper’s signature diamond an increased radiance. Proven to be brighter and appear larger, these sparkling diamonds create a star at the base of the diamond clearly visible with the naked eye.

Even more rare and valuable than colorless diamonds are those that exhibit strong attractive colors. They are known as Fancy Color Diamonds and are found in an extensive range of color including yellow, pink, blue and green. Some of the most famous diamonds in history, such as the Hope Diamond, are Fancy Colors. While an absence of color is valued in regular diamonds, color is unsurpringly the most important factor when valuing Fancy Color diamonds. Whether looking for a traditional diamond or a fancy diamond, Tapper’s is known for curating or custom-designing one-of-a-kind pieces for the individualist.

rand Seiko watches have a distinctive look that reflects Japanese artistic tastes. The design is notable for the purity, simplicity and subtlety of its lines. Grand Seiko calls it “functional beauty,” a style that does not interfere with the reading of time, but enhances it with harmonious case lines and uncluttered, easy-to-read dials. Key to the design are polished surfaces that reflect rays of light.

Since ancient times, Japanese people have admired the subtle gradations between light and shadow in nature. With that inspiration, Grand Seiko uses a simple case design composed of a flat plane and curved line that respond to the movement of light. Grand Seiko creates this hard-edged, flat-surfaced case through a process called zaratsu, or blade polishing. Hand-polishing gives the case a mirror-like smoothness where light and shadow play.

The ultimate test of a fine watch is how accurately it measures the passage of time. In this regard, Grand Seiko is unsurpassed. A Grand Seiko quartz watch is accurate to +/- 10 seconds per year. Grand Seiko Spring Drive’s accuracy of +/-1 second per day is unprecedented for a watch powered by a mainspring.

Spring Drive Caliber 9R86 may well be the world’s most accurate spring-driven chronograph. It delivers a precision of ±15 seconds a month, or ±1 second a day. And, it measures elapsed time not to the nearest fraction of a second but exactly, thanks to glide motion hands that stop the very instant the button is pressed. Grand Seiko makes watches with three different kinds of movements: mechanical, quartz and Spring Drive. Spring Drive is a technical breakthrough invented by Seiko that combines the best of mechanical and quartz technologies. It’s an automatic watch that gives quartz accuracy without using a battery. No other watch company has this technology. It’s a testament to the watch-making savvy of a firm that has made mechanical watches since 1895.

Freshwater or saltwater, natural or cultured, Tahitian or Akoya, pearls inspire a love that spans generations.

10/26/18 4:19 PM

ALWAYS IN STYLE, THESE CLASSIC JEWELS ADD A TOUCH OF SIMPLE, LUSTROUS ELEGANCE. By Rita Guarna Whatever oyster first dreamed of pearls had no idea the gems would shine for millennia. Pearls pop up in the Bible and the Koran; were prized by the ancient cultures of Egypt, India and China; and were a big reason—so the historian Suetonius tells us—that Julius Caesar invaded Britain. The costly gem symbolized purity, but also wealth, as usually only royalty or nobility could afford pearls. With the advent of cultured pearls in the early 1900s, that changed. Since famous French fashion designer Coco Chanel incorporated them into mainstream fashion almost a century ago, pearls have become the accessory that makes a look—and never gets old. Today, a new generation of celebrities and tastemakers is appropriating this timeless gem, giving pearls modern meaning and edge. Far from Park Avenue, fashionable women of all ages

are throwing on strands of pearls with everything from black lace cocktail dresses to blue jeans and white T-shirts. From the concert stage to the red carpet, British singer Rita Ora has used a smattering of differentsized pearls to create youthful yet ethereal hair accessories. Singer-songwriter Rihanna rocks pearls with sexy multi-strand collars and layers upon layers of matinee-length strands. Actresses Emma Stone and Lupita Nyong’o have added luster beyond their accessories, wearing pearlcovered gowns for black-tie events. Actress Jessica Alba has been photographed many times wearing pearl earrings. From decidedly modern black pearl-drop earrings to a pair of hanging gold chains punctuated with small luminescent pearls to front-and-back bauble pearl studs, Alba proves that pearl earrings

transition seamlessly from day to night. Whether you prefer the iconic five-strand pearl necklace Audrey Hepburn wore in Breakfast at Tiffany’s or Kate Middleton’s funky white pearl lariat, there are many trendy ways to wear pearls now. For a preppy look, headbands, hair clips and other hair accessories are getting the spotlight. For a more avant-garde approach, pearls are being used as accents in art-inspired sculptural earrings. The unique shapes and textures of baroque pearls make them the perfect accessories for a free-spirited boho style. For traditionalists looking for a twist on a classic, the Gucci loafer received an update with pearl-studded heels. But perhaps the final word on pearls came, with fitting simplicity, a half-century ago from Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis. “Pearls,” she said, “are always appropriate.”

THE GEM OF QUEENS Diamonds may be a girl’s best friend, but pearls are a woman’s timeless companion. Long known as “the queen of gems” because of their popularity with royalty (among the few who could afford them), pearls have gone mainstream without losing their elegance. Today’s celebrities are making sophisticated and sexy fashion statements with them. From Scarlett Johansson’s luxurious multi-strand, layered look to Jennifer Lawrence’s chic front-and-back black pearl-stud earrings, young fashionistas are donning this classic gem with bold, modern style.

AMETHYST

News Flash..... Purple is the new black! That means you can wear Amethyst with everything, even those cute ripped jeans you just picked up. And, did you know the word Amethyst comes from the Greek word “amethystos,” meaning sober, because ancient Greeks believed it protected them from becoming drunk.

DIAMOND

We already know they’re a girl’s best friend, but did you know that ancient Greeks and Romans believed that diamonds were tears cried by the Gods? And to think that we were happy with “it’s raining men.” So, start your wish list with fall’s hottest diamond jewelry trends and be sure to include a stack of glittering bangles, diamond neck chains for layering and, of course, a great pair of statement earrings.

AQUAMARINE

Who is the latest celeb to love those azure tones of aquamarine? The Duchess of Sussex! She wore an emerald-cut aquamarine ring that signified her “something blue” for the evening reception of her wedding day at Frogmore House. Aquamarine is said to bring peace and level-headedness to whoever wears it.

OPAL

Channing Tatum gave a gorgeous pair of opal and diamond drop earrings to his wife, Jenna. Hmmmm... most of us would have been satisfied just to have Channing. Opal has always been associated with love and passion, as well as desire. It is a seductive stone that intensifies emotional states and releases inhibitions. Be careful; we’re just sayin’.

PEARL

The elegant pearl is once again in the midst of an epic fashion comeback–and you can thank Hollywood’s A-Listers and Millennials for that. From Rihanna and Taylor Swift to Kim Kardashian, Michelle Obama and Natalie Portman, you don’t have to look far to find pearls in the spotlight. Fun fact: pearls are the only gemstones made by living creatures, with a natural valuable pearl found in less than 1 in every 10,000 oysters.

GARNET

PERIDOT

You no longer have to be green with envy! Cleopatra’s famous emeralds that Marc Anthony bestowed upon her, are rumored to actually have been peridots. The ancient Romans, considered the peridot as the “evening emerald.” Unlike the emerald gemstone, peridots don’t have the ability to darken during night time. And no other stone has the luscious lime green color of the peridot.

Are you ready for this? We can thank the ants in Arizona for digging up some of the most beautiful garnets! They are called “ant hill garnets” because they are found on and around the margins of ant hills. Even though garnet exists in a rainbow of colors, most of us associate the stone with its deep red hue. It was one of Queen Victoria’s most beloved gems, and today Selena Gomez and Jennifer Carpenter have been spotted wearing garnets.

SAPPHIRE

Sapphires are becoming a popular choice for engagement rings. When brides-to-be Gwyneth Paltrow and Princess Eugenie debuted their stunning sapphire engagement rings within a matter of days of each other, gem lovers took notice. Deep blue sapphires have long been associated with royalty which may have contributed to the naming of the color “royal blue”.

10/24/2018 9:30:04 AM

MORGANITE

We know it pays to be rich and famous. Morganite was called a pink beryl up until 1911 when Tiffany & Co.’s chief gemologist named the gemstone after J.P. Morgan. Well maybe you won’t have a gemstone named after you but you can own some bling with this gorgeous pinky coral gemstone. It is even rarer than the aquamarine, both members of the beryl family.

EMERALD

SPINEL

There is a popular movement to “go green,” and we aren’t just referring to recycling and tiny houses. We are talking emeralds, the queen of green. C’mon ladies, put a ring on it and get in line with the most famous celebs loving their gemstone engagement rings, including Victoria Beckham, Angelina Jolie, Mila Kunis and Zoe Saldana.

Due to the fact that spinel comes in so many colors, it was confused with ruby and sapphire for over 1,000 years. One of the most intriguing colors on the market is a very bright pinkish red spinel known as “Jedi spinel” because it glows like a red lightsaber. Star Wars fans unite! TANZANITE

TOPAZ

Natural topaz comes in many shades of yellow, orange, red, green, blue, pink, and purple. Blue topaz is generally treated to attain its brilliant hue. The most valuable color of natural topaz is red. It is so rare that less than 1% of all gem-grade topaz rough exhibits this shade. It was used in the Imperial jewels of Russia and named after the Russian Czars of the 18th and 19th centuries.

One of the most beautiful colored gemstones is tanzanite, a combination of blue and violet hues (hint, think Elizabeth Taylor’s eyes). Believe it or not, Tanzanite was only discovered in 1967 even though it was formed 585 million years ago. It is the only gemstone that is only mined in a single location; you guessed it, Tanzania.

TURQUOISE

This vibrant color looks great on all skin tones and with a tan, its color really pops. Just look at the list of celebs that are rocking it–Taylor Swift, Kelly Clarkston, Scarlett Johanssen, Blake Lively and Sara Jessica Parker just to name a few.

RUBY

Ruby is one of the most coveted gemstones. Its rich red tones are captivating and are often seen on celebs, especially on the “red” carpet. But, did you know that rubies are referenced four different times in the bible? The bible associates these gems with beauty and wisdom.

Who doesn’t love the golden tones of the sun? For those of us living in Michigan, the closest we may come to that this winter is to add a gorgeous piece of citrine jewelry to our wardrobes. Kate Middleton does it and is often seen wearing its bold color in large drop earrings. Citrine is named after “citron”, the French name for “Lemon”.

and the queen of pearls Mikimoto is recognized as the world leader and foremost producer of the finest quality cultured pearl jewelry. The Mikimoto name has been the jewelry connoisseur’s assurance of unparalled quality and service. Company founder, Kokichi Mikimoto, was the first person to develop a technique for the cultivation of pearls in 1893, which is still in use today. The company is internationally recognized for its product design, superior craftsmanship and strict quality control. Before this delicate science of pearl culturing was developed, pearls of any kind were so exceedingly rare that thousands of oysters could be opened before one natural pearl was revealed. In 1914, on Okinawa Island, Mikimoto established the world’s first black-lipped cultured pearl farm. Mikimoto’s culturing methods were eventually adapted to the warmer, deeper waters of the South Pacific. This led to the production of cultured pearls in all the magnificent South Sea colors, in pearl beds ranging from Australia to Polynesia. The expert techniques of Mikimoto have captured the hidden beauty of these remote, mysterious waters.

from rich, creamy whites and extremely rare golds to pale greys, subtle greens and gleaming anthracite blacks. With their hypnotic depth of natural color, these treasures of the sea seem lit from within and confer a remarkable radiance upon those fortunate enough to wear them. Because of varieties in color, shape and size, it can take years to assemble a harmoniously matched strand. With over a century of experience to draw on, the skilled pearl sorters at Mikimoto are masters of the art. When you acquire South Sea cultured pearls from Mikimoto, you are assured of owning the finest in the world. In the hands of talented artisans, these awe-inspiring gems take on many glorious forms. Exquisite handcrafting spares no effort in creating the perfect settings for these ravishing beauties. Mikimoto is unique among jewelry brands for its proprietary grading system for South Sea cultured pearls. As with their Akoya cultured pearls, they use their grading system as a method of comparison to assure you the gems are superior in luster and surface.

Mikimoto’s South Sea cultured pearls are impressively large in size, and come in a dazzling array of natural colors…

South Sea pearls were once rare and exotic. They belonged to the realm of Pashas and Potentates. Legend has it that ORO, the Polynesian God of peace and fertility, brought the large, lustrous South Sea pearl to earth as a gift to a beautiful princess.

Whether you desire a pair of luminous earrings, a simple, elegant strand or the most dramatic necklace imaginable, Mikimoto has the jewelry design that perfectly fits your personal style. Enjoy these sumptuous gems of the sea…“the Pearl of Queens, and the Queen of Pearls.”

A gold chain for men should look classic and natural–like you’ve been wearing it for years. Ditch the pendant in favor of a thicker chain. A more substantial linked necklace goes a long way toward adding that extra something.

Layering is key. You can either wear a few chains of different lengths together, or wrap a longer chain around a second time. Play with texture by mixing and matching different style links with one another.

unbreakable watch

“I want to make a timepiece that will not break, even if dropped.”

This proposal, submitted at an internal meeting over 35 years ago, suggested that the development should be a one-man job handled by Kikuo Ibe, the engineer responsible for the external design of watches at the time. It was considered a clear, simple idea that had come up when a watch happened to drop and break during working hours. Watches are delicate precision instruments, and, at that time, it seemed only natural that they should break when falling to the floor. The concept of a tough watch seemed not only unconventional, but even nonsensical. Nevertheless, the proposal was accepted. A project team comprising just three people was formed — and development of the new watch began.

62

TAPPER’S

The team’s initial approaches to overturning common sense began from zero. They first assumed it would be best to cover the entire watch with a soft material. A few dropping experiments put that idea to rest without delay. They found that a watch would break no matter how much shockabsorbent rubber was adhering to the case exterior. And the more cushioning material they attached, the more the size of the watch increased. The experimental model soon swelled to the size of a large softball. A five-step shock-absorbent structure that protected the module, or heart of the watch, with five cushioning materials was eventually devised, solving the size problem. But a new problem concerning the strength of the electronic parts soon arose. When the team members tried to reinforce the parts, they became caught up in a vicious cycle in which

Tappers_pg 62_G-Shock Article_101118.indd 1

strengthening one broken part led to the breakage of another. This unanticipated process of trial and error continued day after day: The developers would drop a prototype with reinforced parts from the window of the third-floor men’s room and watch it break on the ground 10 meters below. They then would analyze the broken parts, strengthen them and try again. The cycle seemed endless. With development apparently going nowhere, Ibe made a decision in despair. In one final effort, he would set a time limit of one week on his own initiative and spend all his waking hours on research. If that were not enough, he would consider resigning from his job. After another week without success, the fateful day arrived. Ibe stepped outside the laboratory building to catch a breath of fresh air in a park next door, where he saw a child bouncing a rubber ball. Suddenly, an inspiration struck him: “If you attached a watch to that ball, it could endure severe shocks.” The idea that sprang to mind in this miracle moment expanded to complete a unique structure in which the module at the heart of the watch floats in the air within a hollow structure inside a tunnel with the case. It was not long before the first G-SHOCK, the model DW-5000C, was launched in 1983. The square design with its symbolic importance was created in pursuit of shock resistance alone, with nothing wasted. The ultimate form for achieving this single function, it has been handed down to the present as an eternal standard. Belief engenders fruit. G-SHOCK’s origin is the story of an unwavering belief that inspired a relentless quest and produced a tough spirit that promises never to fade away.

wiat stands for more than beautiful diamonds. Behind the name is a family that has mastered the craft of creating the most beautifully cut diamonds in the world. It began in 1907, when Sam Kwiat opened his store in New York City. Soon, his son, David, joined him, turning his passion for diamonds into what would become one of the most trusted houses of jewelry design. Today, David’s son, Lowell, and his sons, Greg, Russell and Cory, follow in Sam’s footsteps, crafting the most exquisite diamond jewelry.

a cut above

It starts with setting the strictest standards for diamond cutting. Nature gives a stone its color and clarity, but it takes the hand of a master craftsman to shape it into something brilliant. Without a superior cut, even a diamond with perfect color and clarity will appear dull and lifeless. At Kwiat, every diamond is cut with precision to unlock the brilliance within. In fact, their cut is so precise that their round brilliant diamonds exceed the Excellent cut grade set forward by the GIA, the premier diamond grading institute. All Kwiat round diamonds receive a cut grade of Excellent but only a subset of GIA Excellent diamonds are worthy of becoming a Kwiat diamond. Details do not stop at cut. Every piece of diamond jewelry is light and airy, designed to float comfortably against the skin. Flexible and fluid connections allow jewelry to move easily with the wearer. Diamonds are perfectly matched in clarity, color and carat, then set into jewelry designed specifically for their stones.

And because family is so important at Kwiat, many of the designs include marquiseshaped diamonds, a favorite of David. One of our favorites is the Kwiat Star—an eightpoint star featuring marquise and round diamonds that sit in symmetrical form with harmony and balance. Earrings, pendants, rings and bracelets from this collection sparkle with a classic elegance that is timeless.

Ovals

Influenced by some celebrities with oval diamond engagement rings, such as Serena Williams, Ashley Greene and Kirsten Dunst, ovals are becoming increasingly popular. They are unique and seem larger than same size square- or round-cut diamonds, and the elongated style makes your fingers appear longer.
