Our cover baby ...

R

osie Middleton is the first-born child to Karina and Aaron Middleton and baby sister to Luna. Born 1 April 2020, at the start of Covid lockdown, Rosie had to wait before meeting her grandparents and family friends. Rosie loves listening to music with Dad and enjoys going with Mum to yoga.

“You will never have this day with your children again. Tomorrow they’ll be a little older than they were today. This day is a gift.” Jen Hatmaker (American author, mother of five).

W

elcome to our Baby Book featuring over 100 babies born in Wairarapa throughout 2020. Generously sponsored by Pak’nSave Masterton, it celebrates some of this region’s youngest citizens. This production endeavours to not only show off our babies but also give handy hints about parenting and the services Wairarapa has on offer. Brilliant services like the Paper Plus book club, the unique Plunket service; specialist baby photography and the all-important organisation, Grandparents Raising Grandchildren.

There are several allowances parents can apply for in New Zealand and there’s hints on how to keep your family healthy, and how to assess the best early childhood centre. Enjoy reading our publication whether you are considering a baby, knee deep in raising children, or caring as a grandparent – there’s reading here for everyone. Author and teacher, Elizabeth Stone described making the decision to have a baby as ‘momentous.’ “It is to decide forever to have your heart go walking outside your body.”

While you take care of your newborn, we’ll take care of your “other” baby!

Plunket – a Kiwi institution

T

he Plunket Society’s support through free home and clinic visits for babies and their mothers is unique to New Zealand. For 114 years, it has supported, informed and provided developmental assessments to thousands of kiwi kids from birth to five years. Home visits by the Plunket nurse in those vulnerable early weeks are often life lines for a new mother and the clinic visits are eagerly looked forward to, as they watch their baby thrive. Visits can also take place at preschools, marae and other community facilities. Each visit gives the opportunity to discuss parenting, family issues and the child’s health and development. Nutrition, breastfeeding, sleep, safety, behaviour, growth, hearing and vision are amongst many topics raised. Plunket services are provided throughout Wairarapa with clinics in every town. This service is the magnificent legacy of Dr Frederic Truby King who helped

hoosing an early childhood education centre can seem a daunting task. Things to consider: Centre policies – check out policies on food and nutrition, health and safety, illness, and how they deal with problem behaviour. Philosophy – ask about the Centre philosophy. This is important because it can tell you what really matters to the staff and if it fits with your values

Staff/children relationship – how welcoming are the staff? Do they take an interest in you both? Ratios – the number of teachers to children. The minimum number of teachers to children under age two is one teacher to five children. Over the age of two, the minimum number is one teacher to 10 children.

Staff qualifications – All qualified teachers have at least a three year degree. Find out how many teachers are qualified and who are in training. Culture – Look for a centre that celebrates diversity. This will provide good learning opportunities for your child because children’s self-esteem is built on their culture, language, and identity. Settling in –When you have selected your centre, think about the best way to settle your child. Your child may want you to be with them for a few sessions. Talk with the teachers, seek their advice and set up a ‘settling plan’ together.

f you are a grandparent raising a grandchild, you are not alone, and there’s an organisation specifically there to help you. The Grandparents Raising Grandchildren Trust was established nationwide acknowledging the special role many older people have in raising their grandchild. There are around 7,500 grandparents filling this role around the country. Wairarapa has a support group of Grandparents Raising Grandchildren with approximately 70 members. Anyone who would like to contact this group can phone the Co-ordinator Tere Lenihan (06) 379 5407 or 021 509 493.

This is when children’s photographer, Liz Rikiti, steps in. She specialises in photographing the maternity stages, the birth process, new-born babies and the children and families which surround them. Initially she planned to concentrate on new-borns, but she found they always came along with parents and often siblings, and before she knew it, there were family photos being taken too.

Liz is a self-taught photographer with a gifted eye. With pregnancy photos, she works with the mother through all the stages, beginning with a pre-consultation to get to

know her well. A special service Liz is proud to offer, is the photographing of stillborn babies. This deeply personal service is free of charge. “It’s a humbling time that gives grieving families a chance to have their own special moment, before letting go.” says Liz, who has direct links with the Wairarapa Hospital Maternity Unit and with midwives.

PAK’nSAVE OWNERS UNDERSTAND BABY NEEDS FROM FIRST-HAND EXPERIENCE

PAK’SAVE baby products

PAK’nSAVE Masterton – Great place for family shopping Andrew and Natalie Summerville moved to Wairarapa three years ago with their infant children to pursue their dream of being owner operators of their own supermarket. They took on the hugely successful enterprise that is PAK’nSAVE Masterton. Open from 8am – 10pm every day, it’s a massive operation. With over 15 years of experience in the grocery industry and having passed all the necessary tests, the parent company Foodstuffs gave Andrew the official nod to take on PAK’nSAVE. Originally from Auckland the Summervilles ended up in Wellington where opportunities opened in the grocery trade, including at the Karori New World. Each store runs as a co-operative and Andrew says it was hitting the ground running to get to know

the people and how the Masterton operation ran. Currently, he has 140 staff, full and part-time and is proud of the family atmosphere he fosters. Having young children of his own (ages three and five), it is easy for him to know what customers need to make life easy to shop for groceries for a family. Andrew is especially proud of the PAK’nSAVE philosophy of being cheaper overall. “That doesn’t mean each item is the lowest price, but if you add up your shopping bills regularly, you’ll find PAK’nSAVE is around 12% cheaper overall. Foodstuffs does exhaustive research to prove and back up these claims, so I’m confident in our message.” Andrew is also keen to support New Zealand made, items that are locally produced and that environmentally

friendly. For children and babies, PAK’nSAVE Masterton has a unique range ‘Tui Balms’, made in Golden Bay. The cream is heralded as ‘great for baby’s bum’. Andrew believes he’s the only North Island supermarket to stock this. Silk is also a biodegradable range of baby wipes popular with shoppers and the huge range of nappies, means customers are always able to get the best price possible. PAK’nSAVE offers its staff a range of training programmes. For those who wish to do apprenticeships, there’s several available. Currently, there are five apprentices, three in the butchery and two in the bakery. The fresh produce comes from multiple outlets and fish is delivered six times per week. Foodstuffs owns its own fishing quota to ensure freshness and availability.

Tui Balms from Golden Bay

Andrew and Natalie Summerville, owners of PAK’nSAVE in Masterton, can identify with the proud parents who have put photos of their children in the PAK’nSAVE Baby Book 2020 Andrew and Natalie are proud parents of 2 young children, so they have a feel for what young families need from their local supermarket. One of the things they need are affordable products, with Andrew pointing out that across a “basket of goods”, PAK’nSAVE consistently comes out cheaper than its competitors. Helping families to get more for less.

Did you know that traditional disposable nappies take more than 200 years to break down in the landfill?? Rascal & Friends have come up with an alternative option and is delighted to be introducing the R&F Eco range to PAK’nSAVE stores. These nappies have a lower environmental impact than traditional disposable nappies and are made of a 100% plant-based back sheet, corn starch top sheet and water-based inks. With this range, we are proud to help parents save the planet!

September Reading ...

T

he most powerful reason to read to baby is that it encourages adult/ child communication. Joanna Ludbrook should know. She’s a former children’s librarian and now owner of the Chicken & Frog book shop in Featherston. “Think about it. You’re most likely snuggled up together. You’re both looking at colours and shapes on the page. You’re pointing, you’re smiling, you’re making sounds, you’re animated. What’s not to love about that from baby’s point of view? And it’s not difficult to make it a routine.” Reading with babies is the ideal ‘together’ time. For the first year or so, don’t worry about plot and characters; go for visual stimulation and entertainment. Libraries and bookstores have a huge range of board books with sturdy pages. There are pop-ups, books with bits that move, and pages with different textures. Some have rhythm, some rhyme. Try some in Te Reo too.
