Tapiri Angus - 62 years of breeding

Tapiri Angus, run by Rob and Lucy Thorneycroft, is located 15 minutes north of Masterton in Rangitumau.

The stud was founded in 1961 by Ross McLachlan and his father Stuart. Today, it is run by Ross’s daughter Lucy, and her husband Rob.

The breeding philosophy at Tapiri is to breed efficient, productive, structurally sound, quiet Angus cattle with longevity and constitution.

Investing in top genetics has always been a priority, says Lucy.

“We continue to invest heavily both in leading New Zealand and international sires in order to secure top genetics and are really pleased with the progeny that are coming through. We believe this will add value to our client’s breeding programmes.”

Rob and Lucy are excited about the first crop of calves on the ground by Kaharau Olympic Q327, purchased in partnership with Elgin Angus. His first sons will be available in 2024.

This year’s line up of sale bulls are sired by Brookwood Stunner P47, Whenuapapa Crumble, Kaharau George 589 and Kaharau P331, son of William of Stern.

“We are really pleased with the line up of bulls for sale this year”, says Rob. “They have a very quiet nature and are a pleasure to work with. They have all been sire verified, semen and

soundness tested, BVD tested and vaccinated, and come with a 3-year guarantee.”

As part of the Wairarapa Angus Bull Walk, Tapiri is holding an open day on Thursday 18 May, from 9-9.30am.

Their new sale date is Thursday 1 June, 10am on farm, with viewing and breakfast from 8am.

Inspections are also welcome any other time. Phone 06

Otapawa Poll Herefords

From the front or the back, Herefords are the leading efficient breed of beef cattle,” says Stuart Robbie, Stud Master of Otapawa.

“And using Herefords in crossbreeding is one of the fastest, proven ways to improve farm gate profits. It is one of the reasons why crossbred Hereford calves top most of the weaner fairs across New Zealand each year.”

A common-sense approach to breeding efficient and profitable beef cattle are the founding principles at Otapawa Poll Herefords – Proven genetics producing progressive sound progeny.

“Carcass quality is especially important, it is proven that the Hereford is the most efficient converter of grass, and we are always refining and testing this in our breeding system,” says Stuart.

“The basic knowledge about Hybrid Vigour (Heterosis) has existed for more than 50 years but seems to have been overlooked in recent years as some breed groups are trending towards a genomics bred animal whilst offering selective premium incentives.

“There are good reasons why our forebears utilised crossbreeding for optimum profitability. We’ve observed that a commercial Angus herd can expect to achieve a 15% increase in weaning weights from Heterosis”.

“Hereford Sired Progeny will benefit

from ongoing consistent advantages from feed conversion, to improved average daily weight gains, longevity, and fertility, while still conforming to the selection criteria of many premiums offered.

“It is pleasing to see our clients continually topping the Weaner Fairs with Hereford and Hereford/Angus cross progeny. That is a constant goal for our breeding programme.” Otapawa makes selecting for crossbreeding easy. Identifying and selecting genetics which thrive in the environment in which you farm makes a lot more sense than trying to manipulate the system or environment to suit the livestock, says Stuart.

“We are a commercial farming operation ourselves, so we see the advantages first-hand that reflect our breeding selections from our Stud Hereford herd into the commercial herd. Longevity, maternal ability, and carcass quality are important profit drivers.

“Our clients are putting rising 2-year Hereford and Hereford cross steers through Alliance Handpicked and achieving between 80 and 100% qualifying and averaging an extra $300+ per head.”

Another significant advantage to crossbreeding is the utilisation of the resulting female.

The crossbred cow is undoubtedly

superior in its characteristics for increasing performance across any herd. With the superior fertility of a crossbred female, not only does she reach puberty earlier, allowing for ideal heifer mating, a higher rate of pregnancy throughout her life means significantly less replacements are required, resulting in an improved efficiency across the herd.

“We are putting forward a great line up of bulls this year, including sons from feature Sires Flagstaff Klingon, Wirunna Phil P273 and TH Frontier 174E as well as progeny from Okawa Rommel, who was purchased in 2019 for $60,000.

“We encourage all cattlemen serious about increasing the profitability of their herd, particularity those with Purebred Angus herds, to come and see the bulls first-hand and discuss your breeding programme with us.

“At Otapawa we have a long-term commitment to our clients. Our purpose is to help improve your results through a focus on quality breeding.” This year Otapawa have 41 high performance station bred bulls on offer. We welcome you to our Open Day on May 2 from 9am onwards for light refreshments and a tour of the Bulls.

Sale Day is 6 June. The On-Farm Auction starts at 12 noon and Live on bidr.

Ngakouka Herefords

Herefords from Ngakouka Stud, situated 18kms east of Dannevirke, are the genuine article, says stud breeder, Bruce Donald.

“We run our cattle with sheep, and with enough pressure to expose the weak and enough to see the stands outs.

“We are part of a group of Australasian breeders who run just over 3000 registered cows and import genetics from all round the globe.

“We all use these sires to test their genes in our programmes. From here we are quickly able to select the best for the commercial world.

“This process makes it cheaper for us to get in new bloodlines, select the ones that meet our criteria, use them within the group then share with the entire seedstock industry.

“New genetics is a good thing but we must never discount the impact each cow herd has in each breeder’s operation. This can often be undervalued and shouldn’t be.

“We have used ÿ ve yearling bulls over our herd this year. All of them are out of top cows and sired by our new introduced sires. These chaps have been used over heifers for two cycles or cows for 30 days.

“After they come out of the cows the tried and true sires go in to pick up

what’s been missed by the yearlings. By doing this we get to see the real impact the new genetics have over our herd in two years rather than waiting for the second year as they grow out to join them.”

Ngakouka Hereford Stud sells its bulls from Waikato to Gisborne and down the east coast through Wairarapa to Cape Palliser.

“We make contact with all clients annually to make sure they’re happy and the bulls are delivering to expectations.

“The fantastic thing with breeding stud stock is that we have the pleasure of breeding for di° erent systems: breeders buy to fatten their R2 steers and cull heifers, breed bulls for the dairy industry, or to sell weaners.

“Fundamentally we change nothing

to cater for all of these markets. We breed functional, well structured, great converting cattle who are quiet and consistent yielding prime stock for any market.

“These traits are sought after and we ÿ nd our returning client base very happy.”

Ngakouka Herefords’ bull sale is on the 1 June 2023 at 10am. Viewing starts at 8am. 1877 Weber Rd, Dannevirke. We are looking forward to seeing breeders at our sale and discussing their needs.

SALES BULL WAIRARAPA 2023

Enjoy the best of Hawke’s Bay

Farmers are being invited to enjoy a relaxed weekend in Hawke’s Bay, as well as buying some of the best bulls the region has to offer.

“Bay Bulls: Bigger Than Bola” is the inspiration of Koanui Polled Herefords and Hallmark Angus who are teaming up to hold their auctions on Thursday 15 and Friday16 June respectively.

Established in 1972, Koanui is now the largest registered Polled Hereford herd in New Zealand, run by Chris and Jennifer Chesterman, following on from Fred and Annette Chesterman.

Jennifer says they got the idea for a combined bull sales event from one they attend every year at Kaikoura.

“It is always enjoyable and we thought we would bring the same idea to Hawke’s Bay which everyone knows is a nice spot too, so farmers can relax and enjoy some hospitality at the same time as buying from a fabulous line-up of future herd sires.”

Both studs believe in breeding sound, high performing bulls, that are fit for purpose, Jennifer says.

“So why not visit both sales over the two days and make it a business holiday? You can experience two top bull sales and enjoy the best hospitality that Hawke’s Bay has to offer!”

The two studs have organised a discounted rate on accommodation at a local hotel, and shuttle transport to and from the auctions for those who want it.

Chris adds that it is an opportunity to catch up with other farmers which is good for everyone’s mental well-being.

“It is important for all of us in the farming industry to mix with other farmers, so we know that we are not tackling all these issues on our own.”

Koanui’s breeding programme is based on a balance of performance data, Chris says.

The focus is on performance, structural soundness and maternal strength, with total commitment to the commercial viability of the cow herd.

The annual Bull Sale is the “shop window” for Koanui Polled Herefords, Chris says.

“This is the best of the two-year-old bulls which gives everyone an opportunity to purchase them.”

The stud is holding a Pre-Sale Open Day on Thursday 25 May from 10am to 2pm

to view the 55 catalogued bulls prior to the Bull Sale.

“Don’t worry if you can’t make it on the 25th,” says Jennifer.

“We are happy to show the cattle at any time. Just ring and book an appointment or come early on Sale Day and take in the selection then.”

The Annual Bull Sale starts at 1pm on Thursday 15 June. You will also be able to view the sale live and bid online through bidr®.

Chris says, “Please feel welcome to come and enjoy our hospitality and inspect our bulls even if don’t require one. We enjoy providing an opportunity for farmers to get together.”

To arrange a viewing, or find out more about the open day, call Chris and Jennifer on (06) 874 7844 or email info@koanuiherefords.co.nz

Hinewaka Shorthorns

This year we will be holding our 20th on-farm Bull Sale.

We are really happy to present the line-up of bulls for sale this year. The bulls look great. They are well-grown with real thickness, easy fleshing and soundness.

They are backed up by some very good data and you are able to see the genetic progress being made in the breed-plan figures of each bull and where they sit within the breed for each trait.

There are bulls that are suitable for both heifer and cow mating. There is a strong emphasis on producing cattle that are commercially focused, that can thrive in summer dry conditions, and are fertile and fast growing.

This year’s sale line-up includes bulls sired by two of the breed’s highest performing sires.

Sprys Gigabytes N122 has bred extremely well for us and has left depth and thickness in his progeny.

He is a real impact sire. He is breeding an exceptional phenotype and his progeny exhibit real soundness, deep bodied, easy doing cattle.

Most impressive is that he is backed up with breed leading data in most traits.

Yamburgan Anzac L278 is a sire with extremely good carcass traits with high

fats for Rib and Rump and high IMF. His progeny just get better and better and we are excited about his future in our programme.

With the increase in dairying and dairy support on the better class of land in New Zealand, a lot of beef cattle breeding operations have been pushed to harder hill country properties, and as a result, the type of bulls needed for this class of country has changed.

Gone are the very big framed, later maturing cattle. An efficient animal is moderate framed, with good early growth, able to finish at 18-20 months of age.

Fertility is the most important trait determining profitability in beef breeding operations.

Shorthorns are one of the best maternal breeds of cattle and are an ideal breed in crossbreeding programmes.

The bulls are all semen and service tested and guaranteed fertile at the time of sale. The bulls have all tested negative and vaccinated for BVD. We will have bidr at our sale this year for any people that are unable to make it to the sale you can now watch the sale live and bid online.

Catalogues will be out in the middle of

May. Photos and videos of the bulls will also be on our Facebook page. If you would like further information on sale lots or our breeding programme, please contact us any time. We hope to see as many of you

as possible on sale day.

Mangatara Limousin

Mangatara is the largest registered Limousin herd in New Zealand.

Erik and Lyn van der Velden have around 250 Limousin cows on their 500ha property at Dannevirke. All young stock and up to 90 Limousin bulls are raised on farm.

The couple started breeding Limousin cattle from 1985 for around six years. They got back into breeding the cattle in 2008, investing in diverse genetics through AI and ET programmes.

In the UK, Limousin is the number one beef breed used in the dairy industry for AI, and Erik is hoping that more New Zealand farmers see the benefits to be had from using this breed.

The couple have placed a lot of their breeding decisions on docility foremost. Most bulls have an EBV above the breed average, and they look for low birth, good growth, high EMA and IMF, and good structure, says Erik.

Erik and Lyn are always on the lookout for out-cross Limousins with good growth, calving ease, good EMAs and the ever-important marbling.

“Our aim is to breed quality stock for farmers using Limousin genetics in the beef and dairy industry. The breed offers low birth weight calves for easy calving, and fast growth.

“We have plenty of clients looking for them who will pay top prices for quality Limousin cattle.”

Farmers that use Limousin genetics over their herd choose to either finish them or sell them as weaners.

Those choosing to finish them do so because of the meat yield from a Limousin which is outstanding, with carcases hanging at 60%+ of liveweight and more high value cuts.

Limousin are one of the most efficient breeds converting grass to red meat, with a lower carbon footprint per kilogram of red meat.

Limousin used to be known as a wild breed, but in 1995 a EBV for docility was developed and now the problem has been addressed, says Erik.

“Through careful breeding, they are now some of the quietest cattle around.”

Mangatara has a full range of Limousin

- apricot, black, red, polled, pure and Lim-flex (Limousin/Angus). Mangatara does some autumn calving.

Mangatara Limousin is having an open day on 15 May, with 25 polled bulls both Apricot and Black up for sale. A selection of females will also be available on the day.

Erik and Lyn are passionate about the Limousin breed and look forward to welcoming visitors to their open day.

Rauriki Charolais is holding a Bull Walk on 16 May, and our sixth annual R2 Charolais Bull Sale on-farm at 18 Ahiweka Rd, Dannevirke on Tuesday 30 May at 2pm.

Rauriki Charolais is in both the Whetukura and Flemington districts, and located halfway between Dannevirke and Waipukurau on the Tourere Road.

The property consists of 660ha plus 194ha lease at a height range of 340m to 750m. We run 100 Charolais cows, plus 50 Angus x cows, and 3100 Romney ewes and replacements.

We predominately breed bulls for the beef industry, but we are getting increasing enquiries from the dairy industry. We have some R2 Sale bulls that have identified as potentially suitable for the dairy industry.

This year’s sale bulls are carrying a lot of volume and capacity, and are a great line up of bulls. A lot of this year’s sale bulls have good maternal values with

The bulls have good temperament, and high degree of structural soundness. Around half of this year’s sale bulls are polled or scurred.

Rauriki Charolais’s catch phrase“Power and Performance” - is very well represented with this year’s Rauriki Charolais R2 where we are cataloging 22 Charolais Bulls. We are happy for private inspection of the sale bulls pre-sale. For more information contact Simon Collin M: 027 636 3243 or George Collin M: 027 782 5237 E: s.collin@xtra.co.nz www.raurikicharolais.co.nz or facebook.

Dandaleith Angus Stud’s 2023 annual on-farm sale will offer its best crop of bulls yet, says George Philip.

“We’re really excited with how they look, have performed and grown out. They are exactly the style of bull we want to breed,” he says.

The family business – Philip Land Company – comprises two properties.

George’s uncle Willy Philip farms 200ha Anui farm at Dannevirke while his brother John, George and George’s wife Laura farm a 870ha hill country block near Weber east of Dannevirke.

Between the two properties there are 4000 Romney ewes including 600 stud romney, along with 300 Dorset Down stud ewes and the 250-cow Dandaleith Angus Stud. The family has been busy developing the land of a neighbouring

farm they purchased just over 12 months ago.

Dandaleith Angus Stud has its origin in Scotland where it was started by Willy and John’s grandfather. Their father (Bill Philip) emigrated to New Zealand and started Dandaleith Angus in New Zealand in 1950. The stud had a successful sale last year which saw a full clearance of the bulls offered as buyers targeted their sound cattle that perform on hill country with key traits being phenotype, fertility, carcass quality, growth as well as temperament.

Using bidr as a tool as part of their on-farm sale has helped them navigate the uncertainties of covid-19.

Last year bidding came from throughout the North Island, with local farmers active, and the sale was streamed live across the world.

“Last year was the first year people bid at our sale online indicating farmers are getting more familiar with using technology and have confidence in our genetics. One of our regular buyers had covid-19 so he was able to buy online after coming to our bull walk,” says George noting Dandaleith Angus Stud also bought a sire bull online this year from the Stern Stud in the South Island. George says there is a real focus on structural soundness as many of their clients are hill country farmers.

All the cows are run on the Weber hill country block, proving themselves on

the hill with bull calves sent to Anui to grow out to their full potential after the June sale.

Each spring Dandaleith Angus sell two-year-old and yearling bulls by private treaty, with the best genetics offered to market at the June on farm sale. The stud utilises genetics from New Zealand, Australia and further abroad.

Dandaleith Angus have a proven hill country herd and continue to invest in the best genetics available to ensure the cattle are sound, easy to handle, grow fast as well as bringing in the carcass attributes which are bringing significant premiums to cattle farmers. Around 90 cows are artificially inseminated annually, and replacement yearling heifers are mated to their own yearling bulls showing they back their own genetics. These heifers have to have a calf as a 2-year-old and get back in calf quickly to remain in the herd. Around 30 R2 bulls will be offered at Dandaleith Angus Stud’s 2023 annual on-farm sale, a key difference being the sad passing of John’s wife Phillipa late last year.

“She was quite involved with the bull sale doing the catering and hospitality side as well as the administration work for the company so she will be hugely missed,” says George.

“It will be an emotional day I’d say.”

SALES BULL WAIRARAPA 2023

The McFadzean Cattle - Company

Sixth Annual Sale

The Wairarapa-based McFadzean family name is well-recognised as a leading producer of weaner cattle. In recent years, the family has broadened its focus and has started selling their own line of yearling bulls.

After more than a decade of selling bulls to a few people directly, over time customers returned and more people started approaching the stud. So in 2018 McFadzean Cattle Company was born.

After four successful sales of Meat Maker and Super Angus bulls, in 2021 Johnie and Laura were lucky enough to be given the opportunity to head up to Northland and purchase capital stock registered Angus cows from Craig Davie-Martin at Puketi Stud. Craig has specialised in low birth weight heifer mating for over a decade.

“Last September was our ÿ rst year selling the McFadzean Cruizy Calves and it was a great success, we sold 62 bulls in total across the signature breeds,” says Johnie.

“Last year we calved over 120 cows from their low birth weight herd and we will

Some Meat Maker and Super Angus bulls from 2022

have 40+ Cruizy Calve along with the 35 Meat Maker and Super Angus bulls up for auction on 14 September.”

Over the years the McFadzean family has grown their cow herd from 40 to a consistent 1500 strong cow herd.

Investing in top genetics without compromising constitution has always been a priority for the McFadzean’s.

“The focus has been on having a sustainable and high performing cow herd. We expect our cows to wean a calf that is in excess of 50% of her body weight for heifer calves and in excess of 58% for a bull calf year-on-year regardless of the season.”

Replacements heifers are selected under a strict criteria considering type, constitution, temperament, and durability. This commercially-focused selection criteria are mirrored in their stud bull operation.

“Our focus is on performance under hill country commercial farming conditions We have a very harsh selection criteria for bulls.

“If they don’t meet our criteria, we won’t sell them. We select based on type, constitution, temperament, and cow quality.

“Just like our commercial operation we put a strong focus on the maternal role in genetic improvement and performance.

“In our bull sale catalogue, we not only detail key data on the bulls but showcase the mother.

“We felt it was imperative that clients get to view the cow as well as the bulls. The mother’s ability to withstand varied seasonal and pastoral conditions whilst raring a top calf is a key ingredient to strengthen a herd’s performance.”

After ÿ ve years of o° cial operation the McFadzean’s have been thrilled with the results seen from their clients. The sixth annual yearling bull sale for 2023 will be held on Thursday 14 September.

It will feature 35 Meat Maker/Super Angus bulls and 40 McFadzean Cruizy Calve Bulls. The McFadzean’s will have an open day on August 30.

Glenbrae Hereford

Glenbrae, one of the top Maternal Poll Hereford herd in New Zealand, will be holding its annual on-farm bull sale on Thursday 1 June, with 29 bulls catalogued. Located at Porangahau in the southern Hawke’s Bay, the stud aims to breed cattle that pass on traits of growth, fertility, soundness and a calm temperament to their progeny.

Glenbrae has over 75% of its mixed age cows ranking in the top 10% of the breed for Maternal Value, and dominates the NZ Maternal Trait Leader List with more Dams represented than any other stud.

Glenbrae stud consists of approximately 150 cows and support stock. All replacement heifers are mated and calved as 2-year-olds. Any cows or heifers not in calf are culled ensuring that only the most fertile blood lines continue.

Established in 1972 by Martin and Mary Taylor, Glenbrae Stud has been the passion of the Taylor family for over 50 years with Emma and Andrew Martin continuing the legacy of Martin who

passed away in 2020. Emma’s mother Mary continues to contribute her knowledge and experience to the stud.

Emma has got Martin’s eye for cattle and the couple are excited to be bringing the next generation of exceptional quality stock to their buyers.

“We place considerable emphasis on conformation, fertility and constitution and breed cattle with high growth and milk with moderate frame and birth weight for optimum profit,” says Emma.

“We are constantly on the lookout for new genetics to improve growth, milk, muscling, carcass weight and IMF,” adds Andrew. “Surplus heifers and steers are finished for Hereford Prime and regularly achieve 100% acceptance rate. Bulls are run in one mob for as long as possible to ensure accurate EBVs.”

SALES BULL WAIRARAPA 2023

Final sale for iconic Te Whanga Angus

Established in 1936 by PJ Borthwick, and used as a training farm for returned servicemen after World War II, Te Whanga is one of New Zealand’s iconic sheep and beef stations producing quality meat with genetic integrity.

Located at Gladstone, the 1650ha station is home to 10,000 sheep and 700 Angus cattle.

The Te Whanga Angus stud was established in 1936 and initially purchased cattle from the Waiterenui and Pharazyn studs. These first animals had more than a week’s journey by foot and rail from Hawke’s Bay before reaching their new home.

In 1972 Robin’s Overshiels Stud was combined with the Te Whanga Stud

to add depth and allow the stud cattle to fit into a commercial station system and be top producers offering reliability and quality proven genetics.

PJ believed the fundamental business would always be commercial bulls and his philosophy was to breed the best commercial bulls in New Zealand around temperament, soundness, growth and fertility.

Eighty-seven years later the approach remains the same, but everything comes to an end at some point and Te Whanga is heading to the finish line with the last bull sale coming up on Wednesday 31 May.

We are very proud of this last line up of bulls we have on offer and feel like they are a great representation of all of the work that has gone into the Stud by the late Robin Borthwick, the Borthwick family and all past and present management.

We would like to acknowledge all our clients from over the years and we look forward to catching up with everyone at the last bull sale in a few weeks.

TE TAUMATA POLL HEREFORDS

The team at Te Taumata are looking forward to offering a strong consistent line-up of Poll Hereford bulls bred for the commercial cattlemen and the beef industry for sale on Wednesday 31st May at 1pm.

Elgin Angus

After Cyclone Gabrielle floodgates, fences and silt have been top of mind for many farmers, including Sam and Sarah Duncan of Elgin Angus. However, their attention is now firmly on their upcoming on-farm bull sale.

Sam and Sarah are the sixth generation on the farm in Elsthorpe, carrying on the Angus stud founded by Sam’s grandfather Jock in 1952, and the work of his parents, Mick and Barb. So with 71 years of breeding experience, it’s unsurprising that Elgin Angus continues to produce top quality sires and the 26 sires on offer in its 2023 sale are no exception.

The line-up of bulls are true Elgin cattle with Sam continuing to place an emphasis on pedigree, performance, and phenotype.

The genetics on offer include sons of the well-proven Kaharau 610 and Rangatira L35. Sam says these sires leave fantastic young bulls with meat, bone, and great temperaments.

progeny in more moderate framed bulls who can “get around the hills while carrying tons of meat.”

Sam knows that breeding is more than just about the bulls and so keeps a very close eye on the maternal herd. The aim at Elgin is for a cow which can produce a calf every year and wean at a good weight.

Sam believes this is an important undertaking as a breeder so that I can stand behind our product.

“We guarantee our bulls for three years for fertility and soundness because our clients and the success of their farming operations are important to us.”

“Feedback from clients who have purchased sons of these guys in the past has been really positive with some saying they are the quietest bulls they’ve ever had and with some of the best scanning results they’ve ever had.”

2023 sees the first crop of Turihaua N9 sons through the ring and Sam notes that he has left his mark on his

Sam says, “A good-bodied cow with plenty of depth who can milk well even in tough conditions will be retained in the herd while those who fall short of this aim are moved on. This ensures that the maternal herd is kept to a high standard.”

This process gives purchasers assurance that their investment in Elgin genetics will help keep their herds productive. For even more peace of mind for purchasers, all Elgin Angus bulls are semen tested for morphology and motility as well as undergoing a structural assessment for soundness and serving ability.

The Elgin Angus bull walk is on Friday 26 May from 9am.

Sam says, “The bull walk is a really good chance to come and have a look at what we’ve produced prior to sale day, but people are always welcome to call and organise viewings at any other time.”

Sam and Sarah are looking forward to welcoming you to the sale on Tuesday 13 June at 3.30pm to enjoy an afternoon of black bulls and Elgin hospitality.

WAIRARAPA 2023

Mt Mable Angus

Kevin and Megan Friel look forward to welcoming new and returning buyers to their 38th annual Mt Mable Angus bull sale in Kumeroa, on 12 June at 2.30pm. There will be 37 rising two-year-old bulls on offer this year. All having been parent verified, and genomically, DNA profiled.

In addition to several excellent bulls by the home-bred, Mt Mable Intrigue 1790, whose bulls attracted the three top prices at their 2022 bull sale, and calving ease trait leading Mt Mable Dazzling 1705, the Friel’s will be offering some of the first two-year-old sons of the aptly named Cricklewood Pandemic P056, who they bought in partnership with Kenhardt Angus, from Nuhaka, at the Gisborne sales in 2020 for $92,000. Pandemic has already been so well received in Australia that more semen has been sent, with further enquiries ongoing, following, the presentation of a bull and heifer at several shows, and the quality of the calves born in Australia to date.

2023’s Lot 1 at the Friel’s, Mt Mable 2115, is a particularly impressive Pandemic son who is expected to attract much interest. An added incentive for the Friel’s to purchase and use the Cricklewood Pandemic P056, bull is the fact that he is sired by a son of Mt Mable Thor 660, who was sold to Rangatira stud in 2012 and sired Rangatira 13-38. This bull was then sold in 2015 as a rising two-year-old bull for $100,000

to the late John Bayly, of Cricklewood Angus. This was an on-farm sale record price. Many studs around the country have used semen from Rangatira 13-38 and he is now renown for quality Angus cattle.

Mr Bayly liked 13-38 so much, he returned to Rangatira in 2017 and paid another $38,000 for Rangatira 15-21 who is in turn the sire of Cricklewood Pandemic P056, born in 2018.

It has been a spectacular grass growing season at the Friel’s property and as a result the 2023 weaners are on average 40kg ahead of last year.

Unlike many in the Tararua and Hawke’s Bay region, apart from all the river flats being flooded and fences destroyed accordingly, their property at Kumeroa has not suffered any significant damage.

Kevin and Megan are mindful that there are many who are not in such a fortunate position and have themselves had close family lose their home and possessions to Cyclone Gabrielle.

The Friel’s look forward to sharing some hospitality with prospective bull purchasers on 12 June and, also remind those interested that their bulls will be available for viewing on the Hawke’s Bay Bull Walk on 26 May from 2.30pm. Of course other viewing times are available and can be arranged by contacting the Friel’s or your livestock agent.

The catalogue is available online at www.angusnz.com and will be available on bidr© and NZ Stud Stock sales in due course.
