It’s show time in Wairarapa Welcome to the TFM Tractors Wairarapa A&P Show. This year is a special one as the Show will celebrate its 140TH anniversary. This makes it only 20 years younger than the establishment of Carterton. While much has changed over the past 140 years, the spirit of the Wairarapa A&P Society and Show remains alive and well as will be demonstrated by this weekend’s event. A highlight for children will be some of their favourite film characters putting on shows and meeting and greeting for photos, courtesy of Enchanted Entertainment of Wellington. Dog trainer extraordinaire Chelsea Marriner returns to the Show for the first time since 2013, bringing new dogs and new tricks for her Ultimate Canines show. As always, the Show kicks off on Friday evening from 5pm with FREE entry to the Night Show - the only opportunity in

Wairarapa to enjoy traditional rides and sideshows. Primary schools will also be competing in the annual Top Team competition. For the first time, there is going to be the Hicks Contracting Hoedown featuring top Celtic band The Shenanigans on Saturday night from 7pm. Everyone is welcome with entry by gold coin donation to go to the Life Flight Trust. There is a full day of shearing on Saturday with some of New Zealand’s top shearers and wool handlers competing while Masterton axeman Faavae Sefo has managed to attract some of Australia and New Zealand’s top competitors for two days of woodchopping on Saturday and Sunday. The WBS Discovery Trail for children is back with lots of free goodies to be collected along the way as well as cool prizes to be won.

The TFM Tractors Wairarapa A&P Show is one of only a small number of A&P Shows that still include animal judging which always adds something special – sheep, pigs, cattle, donkeys plus the popular pets corner and poultry displays. Equestrian sports will add their own unique flavour to the Show from Friday to Sunday. The stadium will be overflowing with exhibitors and home industries along with a special exhibition of historic photographs to mark the Show’s 140th anniversary. We look forward to presenting the best of town and country to all our Wairarapa residents and visitors from further afield. As always, the Show offers excellent value for money for families. Entry is $10 Adults, $5 Children (12 and under), Family Pass (two adults and two children) $20, Under 5’s are free and over 65’s are $5. See you at the Show!

140TH A&P SHOW

Enchanting entertainment Anna and Elsa, Rapunzel, Ariel, Captain America and Spiderman may all be making an appearance at the TFM Tractors Wairarapa A&P Show. The characters are being provided by Enchanted Entertainment from Wellington. Founder Serena Daysh started the business two and a half years ago. “I got asked to do the birthday party of the five-year-old daughter of a friend of mine. “She wanted a fairy but I went as Elsa from Frozen. I got such a good response that I advertised on Facebook to find other actors.” Enchanted Entertainment only employs entertainers who have been professionally trained and are qualified in the performing arts, now has 17 characters. Each character does a 15-minute set written and designed by Serena with lots of singing, dancing and reading from books, all around the theme of the character. While Serena doesn’t have any children herself, “I’m only 32 so I’m young enough to remember what kids are into - kids love it.” In between shows, the princesses and super heroes will be greeting children and having their photographs taken with them.

Saturday night Hicks Contracting Hoedown with the Shenanigans Saturday evening everyone is welcome to let their hair down at the Hicks Contracting Hoedown with The Shenanigans. For this year’s TFM Tractors Wairarapa A&P Show the organisers have decided to add an extra touch to the Saturday night atmosphere by having Wairarapa’s foremost Celtic band perform. “We want to bring the whole community together for some fun and laughter,” says Clareville Complex Secretary Catherine Lord. “We will have spot prizes and the food court will be open for food and our licensed bar will be open for drinks. “There are always a lot of people around, especially with all the competitors for the equestrian events staying on the grounds, so we thought we would add a bit of entertainment for the evening.”

guitar, mandolin, whistles, harmonica and electric guitar.

“I think everyone knows someone who has needed Life Flight in the past and it is great if we can give them something back.”

His enthusiasm for music and entertaining as well as his sense of humour is infectious.

The Shenanigans - Justin Reed, Jane Boyers, Maurice Phillips and Neha successfully walk a fine line between having a good time and serious musicianship. They know that getting the audience up and dancing is as important as meaningful lyrics and technical virtuosity. As well as reconstructing traditional Irish/Celtic tunes that have been around for generations, the Shenanigans enjoy taking well-known contemporary classics and “Irishing” them up.

Everyone is welcome with entry by gold coin, which is going to the Life Flight Trust. Gates open at 6.30pm and band starts at 7pm.

Justin originally came from a folk and rock background that took in Leonard Cohen and Bob Dylan as well as Johnny Cash and John Denver, before connecting with his Celtic family roots.

Jane is a classically trained violinist who has “been playing fiddle for 29 years,” although she also enjoys playing mandolin and tenor banjo. Before joining the Shenanigans, Jane eked out an incredible existence as a fulltime costume designer for large stageshows in New York. “Theatre is where music and art come together and the United States is the place for huge musical inspiration where great country, bluegrass and jazz music co-habitat.” Maurice’s main claim to fame is playing drums on Kiwi 1980s hit “Life Begins at Forty” with Dave and the Dynamos, while Neha supplies exceptional bass skills for the band.

A&P SHOW

The ultimate dog show There will be new dogs and new tricks when Chelsea Marriner and her Ultimate Canines appear at the 140th TFM Tractors Wairarapa A&P Show. Chelsea’s troop of 13 dogs will all be coming down from Rotorua for the Show with six or seven taking the stage with her. The Show is one of Chelsea’s first performances for the summer season. “I have a few new dogs so we will be trying out some new things at the Show which is one of the first events on the calendar.” Chelsea first came to national prominence when she and Quest appeared on TV on New Zealand’s Got Talent 2008, reaching the grand final. Quest remains alive and well at the grand old age of 15, but retired from showbiz four years ago. The Ultimate Canines appear all around New Zealand from schools and galas, to health camps and Coca-Cola Christmas in the Park. For Chelsea it is a full-time job, supplemented with some dog training fulfilling a dream she had when she was just four years old. When I was four, I saw Wonder Dogs on

8

TV and decided that I’d love to teach my dog to do some cool stuff like that. Not good tricks though. I taught her to dig on command, so she dug holes in the carpet of the rental house we lived in.” She admits that she probably has more dogs than she needs “ once I get hold of a breeding line I like, I tend to end up with a few. But they all have a job.” All Chelsea’s dogs are Heading Dogs, a breed with lots of intelligence and tons of energy. “They are super clever and enjoy being busy. They will do tricks for you all day if you want them to. They all have their own strengths in the tricks they do, reflecting their different personalities.” Chelsea’s dogs are all trained using positive reinforcement. “Anyone with a knowledge of dogs knows that Heading Dogs require a huge amount of mental and physical stimulation to keep them occupied and sane.” While being fun, Chelsea says the show also highlights the positive qualities of dogs. “People need to be more aware of what a dog can do if you put the time in.”

HISTORY

140TH

TFM TRACTORS WAIRARAPA

A&P SHOW

This year the Wairarapa Agricultural & Pastoral Society celebrates its 140th anniversary and will be marking it with a photographic exhibition in the Stadium. The Society and its annual show has traditionally been a highlight of the social calendar in Wairarapa and continues to attract both residents of town and country.

The Society was formed after a meeting held in the Marquis of Normanby Hotel, Carterton, in August 1877, and held its ÿ rst show in November of that year – in the old stockade in what was to become Masterton Park. The following year the Society purchased grounds in Belvedere Road for permanent quarters. The ÿ rst shows featured breeds hardly shown nowadays, with Lincoln sheep very popular, along with Merinos, Leicesters, Cotswolds and Romney Marsh. Among the cattle breeds, Shorthorns were the most popular, dairying not yet viable as refrigerated shipping had not reached New Zealand. Draught horses were also an important show class.

Dawne Harvey and friends at the Show in 1953

By 1910 the annual show had become a much larger a° air, with over 1500 entries. Romney Marsh had become the most popular sheep breed, although

Southdowns were also regularly exhibited. Dairying had increased too, and although Shorthorns remained the most popular cattle breed, Jersey cattle were also favoured, as were HolsteinFriesans, first introduced in 1906.

Mick Rayner, Patron of the Wairarapa Agricultural & Pastoral Society, doesn’t remember the first time he went to the Wairarapa A & P Show. That’s because he suspects he was in a pram at the time.

Avis Ethel McPhee, nee Harp, born in 1905, remembered the Show as “the one thing in the year we looked forward to.

“Everyone used to go to the show in those days. It was the main event of the year. Everyone used to get dressed up in new clothes for the show.”

“We had new dresses, always a new dress for the show, a new hat, new shoes and new socks and all the underclothes. And we thought we were beautiful when we went to those shows.

That was back in the early 1930s. A sheep farmer all his life, Mick served on the general committee of the society for 55 consecutive years and was elected patron of the society in 2002.

“My father was a member of that society all his life. He spent three days getting ready for that. He was in charge of the Stewards’ Luncheon Room and he used to go around the farmers and collect the fowls, and bring them home, cut them out on the ground, and mother used to stuff them.

Mick recalls that when he joined the Society there would be about 70 members on the general committee alone.

“They were taken up to Dellers butchers shop to be cooked. And we made a baby’s bath filled with cut up lettuce for lettuce salad. That meant us getting up at four o’clock in the morning.” The Great Depression hardly affected the popularity of the show -record entries of 3322 were received for the 1933 show, stock making up over half the numbers. The Society flourished in the 1950s – 1671 members were recorded in 1968, while the 1960 show attracted over 4500 entries.

“It would be three years more before you got on, and it was a great honour to be on the committee.” Mick remembers back in the day there used to be a working bee every Tuesday. “All the dairy farmers would come from 10am to 1pm, then have a few beers at the Club Hotel and go home and milk the cows. I think they really enjoyed it as they were on their own all day, so they enjoyed the company and the day out.” Mick served two years as President of the Society at a crucial moment in its history when it moved from its former grounds at what is now the Carterton Rugby Club

A cool day at the Show of 1920 at Belvedere Road, to its present address at the former Carterton Race Course at Clareville in the 1970s. “When we came here there was nothing really. The only buildings were a hall and the old tote building.” The shift up the road to Clareville has been a great success, with expanded facilities being shared with other sporting and community groups. Champion Australasian woodchoppers compete

ATTRACTIONS

140TH

TFM TRACTORS WAIRARAPA

Competitors are coming from as far away as Australia for the woodchopping at TFM Tractors Wairarapa A&P Show sponsored by JNL, they will be joined by a host of top axemen from around New Zealand.

A&P SHOW

The magnet attracting them is Faavae Sefo who is friends with many in the close-knit woodchopping community. “We’ve got quite a few top competitors coming from Australia - one from Queensland and four from New South Wales.” One of them is Blake Marsh, 23, from Bellbird, NSW who came second in the world at the 2017 STIHL TIMBERSPORTS® Rookie World Championships in Hamburg, Germany. “I get on really well with him. He came over two years ago and wanted to come back.” Coming over with Blake will be his 17 year old younger brother Brendan Marsh who was a member of the Australia Under 21 competition earlier this year. Some of New Zealand’s best axeman

won’t be making the show as it falls on the same weekend as the World Championships in Norway. However, there will be a couple of woodchoppers from Waikato who presented New Zealand earlier this year Jesse Whitehead and Nathan McDonald. Faavae has won two world titles as a single sawer - in Sydney in 2013 in Sydney and Rotorua in 2015. The other local competitors are Quentin Fawcett and Tawhi Lackner, who have previously been New Zealand under 21 representatives, and veteran woodchopper Terry Wright. Competitions will be held on both Saturday and Sunday. Saturday will have open events with handicaps while the competitions on Sunday are all championships. While the prize money gives the axemen something to aim for, that’s not the main reason woodchoppers travel all the way to Clareville to compete, says Faavae. “We are all good friends and they enjoy the show.” The sport is in good health with a lot of young competitors coming through. New Zealand and Australia are the leading countries in the world at the moment, followed by the United States and Canada. But it is in Europe where things are really happening, says Faavae, with woodchopping attracting crowds of thousands, encouraged by huge support from power tool manufacturer Stihl. Faavae says the support of JNL has be great, including supplying the tree boles which the competitors will climb up to chop their logs.

Pumping shearing action to get the adrenalin going Expect some of New Zealand’s top shearers and woolhandlers at this year’s TFM Tractors Wairarapa A&P Show. Wairarapa shearing contractor Alan Grant, who organises the event, never knows who will turn up to compete until they arrive on the day but the competition always attracts some of New Zealand’s top sports people. While the prize money is a bit of incentive, Alan says most competitors are driven more by the recognition gained from winning against their peers. The competition is part of the Shearing Sports series held throughout New Zealand over spring and summer.

To give you some idea of the level of talent, last year’s Open Shearing winner Roland Smith went on to win the Golden Shears, Senior Shearing, champ Paraki Puna went on to became the topranked senior shearer for the season, and Open Woolhandling winner Joel Henare went on to win the World title in February. Shearing Sports journalist Doug Laing expects a good turnout once again, with last year’s rising young talent moving up another level. The competition has the excitement of a Golden Shears final but also the intimacy of an old-fashioned rural shearing competition of yester-year.

STATIONERY, BOOKS, GIFTS, FLOWERS

The competitors get enthusiastic and loud support from their extended families and shearing gangs who come from around Wairarapa, Hawk’s Bay and Manawatu in particular. Saturday will see a full day of shearing and wool-handling competitions starting from 8.30am while Sunday will be a more informal affair with shearing demonstrations from 11am.

140TH

TFM TRACTORS WAIRARAPA

A&P SHOW

GIVEAWAYS GALORE ALONG “DISCOVERY TRAIL” There are lots of prizes and giveaways for children who follow the Wairarapa Building Society “Discovery Trail.” All they have to do is to bring the Discovery Trail map - found in this edition of Wairarapa Midweek - and then follow it around the showgrounds, getting a stamp and giveaways from various exhibitors along the way. They also get vouchers for a free ride

in the sideshows, free drink and free punnet of chips. Once children have finished the Discovery Trail, they can drop their completed map into the entry box, located at the secretary’s office, to go in the draw for three major prizes from the Wairarapa Building Society: 3-6 years: Hatchimal, 7-9 years: Kathmandu Puffer Jacket and 10-13 years: cell phone. The school with the highest percentage of entrants also gets a $500 voucher to use for sporting equipment. This means all schools have a chance of winning the voucher no matter how large or small their role is, Wairarapa A&P Society Secretary Catherine Lord says.

FREE ENTRY FOR CLASSIC SIDE SHOW EXPERIENCE ON FRIDAY

As a full-time coal miner working in the Huntly mines and part-time weekend motor cycle daredevil stuntman riding the Wall of Death motorcycle act, Roy Mahon began providing fairground amusements to the public of New Zealand in 1948. His sideshows and rides have been a popular part of the Show for many years.

The TFM Tractors Wairarapa A&P Show is a rare opportunity to enjoy a classic sideshow experience. As in past year, the sideshows will be provided by Mahons Amusements Ltd which has now been going for over 60 years.

Entry to the Friday Night Show, which starts from 5pm, is free. Also on Friday evening is the Top Team Competition, organised by the Greytown Netball Club, which attracts primary schools from throughout South Wairarapa.

TFM TRACTORS WAIRARAPA

A&P SHOW

Donkeys capture awards One of the most charming scenes at the TFM Tractors Wairarapa A&P Show is the judging of the donkeys and mules. Shelly Pender’s role with the Donkey & Mule section is to liaise with the A & P secretary to ensure all details are correct, organise a judge and steward for the show, and to make sure the classes being used are suitable for all competitors and the section runs smoothly on the day. Entries can change from year to year but there is always room for more donkeys and mules to come and enjoy a day out, she says. Most of the entries come from Masterton and Carterton, with some usually coming from Manawatu as well. There are many donkeys and a few mules in Wairarapa. At the show they will be judged on their conformation and action in the Breed section, their willingness to obey instructions in the Performance section (ie the timed bending race), and on their willingness, paces and manners in the Harness section.

Shelly breeds and shows American Miniature Mediterranean donkeys and currently has six on her Masterton property. “I have had horses for the majority of my life but gave up riding and needed something to fill that gap. “I have not been disappointed! Donkeys are fun to have, they have lovely personalities and enjoy the company of people they bond with. “They are super pets and very endearing. Donkeys make a great first mount for children before moving on to ponies. Donkeys have a calmer disposition than horses. “They are routine animals and have a great sense of humour. Donkeys are not so much stubborn as cautious, and those fortunate enough to have had training will enjoy going out for walks. They require the same type of up-keep as a horse and bond with their herd and owner.”

COOKING UP A STORM

Dogs and their owners on trial Very few sports in the world can compare with dog trials, explains Stu Henson, head of the section at the TFM Tractors Wairarapa A&P Society. “Using no technology and no physical control, you have to get your dog to control another set of animals.” Getting the sheep into the pen in under two minutes depends on having a naturally talented dog and how well it is trained, Stu says. There’s definitely a lot of psychology involved. “It’s about having a good bond with your dog. You really are a team. Training and natural instinct come to the fore and how well you read the sheep. You can’t give your dog advice if you don’t know what is happening.” The Clareville competition only uses heading dogs as this breed suits the type

of course and event at the Show.

Long before reality television, there was always one place where you could enjoy a good bake-off and that was the TFM Tractors Wairarapa A&P Show.

While there is a Wairarapa-Southern Hawke’s Bay Dog Trial Centre with 13 clubs, this is a one-off event that is not part of the normal trial season which runs from January to May.

Baking is one of many traditional skills on display in Home Industries in the Stadium. There are 145 classes in the cooking section alone, covering everything from Anzac biscuits to coconut ice to fruit chutney.

The majority of competitors are farmers or retired farmers, but dog trialists from all walks of life, Stu says.

The weeks before the Show are a busy time for Johanna Van Leeuwen who has been competing since 2009.

He encourages beginning dog trialists to take part.

“I’ve always enjoyed baking and now I just do it every year. I got started when my husband Alan Grant started organising the shearing competition at the show.”

“It is not just about competing. It is an opportunity to be with other experienced people who can help improve your stock work. “Anyone can come and have a lot of fun. There are different grades so if you are a novice you don’t have to compete with the top dogs.”

SPECIALISED LIVESTOCK TRANSPORT

Johanna competes in numerous classes including jams and preserves, fruit cakes and biscuits, and has been the champion of champions in the cooking and preserves section for the past three years. “I think the number of entries is building up year-by-year and it would be great to see even more.”

Dairy doing well The TFM Tractors Wairarapa A&P Show attracts one of the largest numbers of dairy cattle entries of any show in the lower North Island. Dale Collie, who with husband Gordon Collie is a Life Member and former president of the Wairarapa A&P Society, has never missed the show all her life.

She has been involved with the dairy entries for the past three decades. While the face of dairying in Wairarapa is changing with fewer small and family farms, Dale says there is still a place for the Clareville show in the industry. “It still serves a purpose, mainly to showcase farmers’ studs and the breed itself. “It gives other farmers the opportunity to see their breeding lines and there is a certain mana that comes with winning prizes at the show.” Along with the adults, increasing numbers of children are presenting their animals in the Calf Club. “We are getting lots of entries from children.” Each breed supplies its own judge. These are experienced farmers who also go to judging school at least once every two years. The dairy breeds they will be judging at this show are likely to include Holstein Friesian, Ayrshire, Jersey and Shorthorn.

Wairarapa’s most famous war horse One of the few war horses to return from World War I will be remembered at the 140th TFM Tractors Wairarapa A&P Show. Only about four horses are known to have been brought back to New Zealand from Europe and the Middle East and one of them was “Bess.” Over 10,000 New Zealand horses served overseas during World War I, sent to the various theatres. Bess was among the first, one of 1000 donated when the war first broke out. A four-year-old black thoroughbred, she had been born and raised in South Wairarapa, and named ‘Zelma’. When she joined the New Zealand Expeditionary Force, Bess was allocated to the Wellington Mounted Rifles and selected by Captain C.G. Powles who, perhaps thinking ‘Zelma’ sounded too poetic, renamed her.

Carterton soldier Fred Deller in Bethlehem. Text and photo: Wairarapa Archive Bess was destined to stay with Powles throughout the war, serving in Egypt, Sinai, Palestine and France. She was lucky in that she was an officer’s horse and was thus spared the fate that most New Zealand horses suffered of being shot. According to Powles’ son, Dr Peter Powles, at the end of the war Bess was shipped to England and looked after while Powles did an officer’s course. She was then sent back to France and Germany where Powles rode her in a victory parade in Berlin. In 1920 Bess was returned to New Zealand, reputedly leading the grand parade in the Wairarapa Agricultural show. Dr Powles recalled that she also

entered a show, where she came second. After a distinguished military career, Powles took over command of Flock House at Feilding, Bess going with him. He continued to ride her until her death in 1934. But Bess lives on with a memorial erected at Flock House, and another built in Port Said, Egypt in 1932. That statue was relocated to Albany, Western Australia, during the 1956 Suez crisis. It has also been claimed that the horse on the Wellington cenotaph is modelled on Bess. Without a doubt Bess was one of Wairarapa’s most famous participants in World War I and photos of her will be on display in historic the exhibition at in the Stadium.

A&P SHOW

Pet people A perennial favourite for children at the TFM Tractors Wairarapa A&P Show is the Pets’ Corner. The key people behind it are Melvin Pike, John Swansson, and Leonie Wilson, who says the Pets’ Corner has been part of the show “forever.” The three friends collect pets wherever they can find them with a changing menagerie every year. Featured animals have included goats, rabbits, guinea pigs, ponies, lambs and

even gold fish. The Wairarapa Poultry & Pigeon Club provides a display of poultry of different breeds as well. Melvin and Leonie appear in the film Pecking Order which covered the New Zealand National Poultry Show in Christchurch last year, humorously documenting breeding, feeding and presenting the perfect bird. Children will also be fascinated and intrigued with lamb and calf judging competitions on the Sunday of the show. In the lamb categories this includes owners calling their pets to see how well the animals respond, ideally trotting to their owner, as pictured.

Enthusiastic young equestrians Two of the enthusiastic equestrians competing at the TFM Tractors Wairarapa A&P Show are sisters Georgia Percy, 15, and Morgan Percy, 23, of Masterton. Morgan got her first pony as a ten yearold and was competing a year later. “I have always loved horses. Since I can remember I wanted a horse and begged Mum and Dad until they finally gave in.” Georgia also started competing as an 11 year-old. “I got interested because Morgan rode and she kind-of got me into it.” Morgan’s current horse is Ksabi Dream “but known as Boris. He is an eight year old gelding and I have had him for two and a half years.”

and fourth at Dannevirke, along with many other placings in other classes as well. Georgia has four horses, three of whom are competing - Double J Image , Surprise Illusion and Lowenbehold. She has been competing in show jumping rounds around the country such as the Pony Grand Prix which is the highest level of competition for a pony. Among her successes was being placed third in the Pony of the Year class on Surprise Illusion at the National Horse of the Year Show. Morgan and Georgia’s parents Kirsty and Mark are very supportive of their daughters’ activities.

Morgan competes in show jumping in the Amateur Rider series. “But I am hoping to step up and jump some higher classes towards the end of the year.”

“Mum drives us around to shows and helps out with the work outside of the show ring, while dad supports from home,” says Morgan.
