Welcome to the

BABYBOOK

Welcome to our Wairarapa Jennian Homes Baby Book 2017. With 135 babies inside this is truly a “bumper” baby issue. The numbers reflect the baby trend in Wairarapa which saw the number of babies born at Wairarapa Hospital jump 19 percent from 418 in 2016 to 497 in 2017. Wairarapa is a great place to bring up a young family, with easy access to health and social services, great early childhood centres and schools, and

2

plenty of parks and recreation facilities. All these qualities are making the region increasingly attractive to young families from outside Wairarapa. An old Chinese saying goes – “The jewel of the sky is the sun, the jewel of the house is the child” – so Wairarapa is rich in jewels. Our thanks go to the parents who are sharing their jewels in this publication.

Charlotte and Oliver as popular as ever

It’s official - Charlotte and Oliver have topped the list of New Zealand’s most popular baby names for 2017. Charlotte is back on top of the girls’ list, up from second last year. 2017 marks the fifth year in a row that Oliver tops the boys’ list. Names increasing in popularity include Arlo for boys, jumping from 23rd place in 2016 to 10th place in 2017. Willow is steadily increasing and sits at number 21 on the girls’ list. James remains a favourite name amongst baby boys, appearing in the top 20 every year since 1963. Registrar-General of Births, Deaths and Marriages Jeff Montgomery says registering a baby is an important first step to make sure they have an official identity and can access their legal rights.

6

“60,935 babies were registered in 2017, with many new parents now using SmartStart to register the birth of their child. SmartStart is free and helps parents and babies get off to the best start, making it easy to register your baby and get an IRD number for your child, as well as adjusting a Ministry of Social Development benefit or updating a Working for Families application. “People can do all of this and more in one place, at any time, on any device saving time and meaning that parents no longer need to fill in multiple forms,” Jeff says. 2017 TOP 10 GIRLS’ NAMES (2016 place in brackets) 1 2 3 4

Registering a baby & getting a birth certificate HOW TO REGISTER YOUR BABY Every baby born in New Zealand must be registered, normally within 2 months of being born. It’s free, and you can apply for the baby’s birth certificate and IRD number at the same time. Registering a birth in NZ is a legal requirement. Both parents have to complete the birth registration together, unless one of them is: unknown, dead, missing, of unsound mind, unable to complete the form because of a medical condition, overseas and has no delivery address or contact details, a danger to you or your child. If the other parent is unknown, you can still register the birth online. If the other parent is known, but they can’t complete the form, you must complete a paper form and post it to Births, Deaths and Marriages.

Your baby’s birth certificate - This costs $33 for a standard certificate, $35 for a decorative certificate or $55 for a pack including 1 standard and 1 decorative.

When your baby is given an IRD number, Inland Revenue will add it to your Working for Families registration details for you.

An IRD number for the baby - You will need this to claim Working for Families payments for the child, or to open a KiwiSaver or bank account in their name.

NAMING YOUR CHILD Birth registration is when you officially give your child a legal name. The baby’s name must include a last name and one or more first names, unless your religious or cultural beliefs require the baby to only have one name.

If you receive a benefit, you can get Birth, Deaths and Marriages to tell the Ministry of Social Development (MSD) about your child’s birth — you’ll need to tell MSD so they can check how this changes your benefit. If you’ve already applied for Working for Families payments for your baby, make sure you include your own IRD number on the birth registration form - Inland Revenue needs this to give you the payments.

It must not be: offensive, longer than 100 characters, including spaces, an official title or rank, or resemble one (eg Justice, King, Prince or Princess, Royal) unless you can justify why your baby should be allowed that name, spelled with numbers or symbols (eg V8). Source: www.govt.nz

One classroom of children a month hospitalised from road accidents For New Zealand children 0-14 years, one of the leading causes of injury involves children as passengers in motor vehicles, with about 18 deaths a year and the equivalent of one classroom-full (26) of children admitted to hospital every month. Studies show that child restraints can significantly reduce the risk of hospitalisation and death when used correctly. In the event of a car crash, booster seats reduce the risk of injury by 59%. “Remember, it’s about height not age: children are safer in a child restraint until they are 148cm tall,” says Child Restraint Technician Holly Hullena from Wairarapa Road Safety Council “If you’re transporting children in a vehicle you need to know how to

12

safely restrain them so that they’re protected in the event of a crash.” Under the law, as the driver you must make sure that any child under seven years of age is properly restrained by an approved child restraint that is appropriate for the age and size of the child. They must not travel in the vehicle if you can’t put them in an approved child restraint. The vehicle’s safety belt on its own is not an approved child restraint. Using the safest child restraint for your child is only going to protect your child if it is installed correctly.

For information on child restraints, visit www.wairsc.org.nz/services/childrestraints or call Holly on 06 377 1379. There are qualified child restraint technicians in Wairarapa at new car seat stockists The Warehouse Masterton and Farmers Masterton. Pregnant women are not getting enough Omega-3 The first ever study on the intakes of omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids in pregnant women in New Zealand, has found only 30 per cent are getting the recommended daily amount.

are important during pregnancy for a number of reasons. “They help form important building blocks for our cells, and are essential for the development of baby’s brain and growth. These fatty acids help support mothers to have a healthy pregnancy.” The omega-3 fatty acid known as docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) is critical during the time when the neural tube closes and throughout pregnancy as it accumulates in the fetal brain and retinal tissues. The amount of DHA accumulated by the fetus occurs mainly in the third trimester of pregnancy, and is influenced by the maternal diet.

sources of omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids and also provide several nutrients, including protein and iodine, all of which are important for fetal development. “Two serves of fish [150g per serve] per week can substantially contribute to meeting omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids recommendations. “Despite guidelines encouraging fish and seafood as safe to eat during pregnancy, women may decrease or limit these foods due to concerns regarding food safety and the potential for mercury poisoning,” Dr Beck says.

596 pregnant women in their last trimester of pregnancy and from all regions of New Zealand, volunteered to take part in the online study.

In New Zealand, the recommendation for combined omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids during pregnancy is 115mg per day.

. “Women who are currently pregnant or planning to be should aim to eat a variety of healthy foods every day from each of the four food groups to get all the nutrients they need to protect the long-term health of both themselves and their baby.”

The study was published in the New Zealand Medical Journal last September. Dr Kathryn Beck from Massey’s School of Sport, Exercise and Nutrition says omega-3 fatty acids

Dr Beck says while 77 per cent of participants met the lower target, only 30 per cent were ingesting the international recommendations of 200mg.

The study was undertaken by Michele Eickstaedt as part of her Master of Science research and was supervised by Dr Beck and Dr Cathryn Conlon.

New fathers can get new baby depression too Depression symptoms among men before and after the birth of their children have been identified by research from the University of Auckland’s Centre for Longitudinal Research - He Ara Ki Mua. The study found that expectant fathers were at risk if they felt stressed or were in poor health. Elevated depression symptoms following their child’s birth were linked to social and relationship problems. The study, published in the Journal of the American Medical Association Psychiatry, investigated depression symptoms in more than 3500 New Zealand men during the third trimester of their partner’s pregnancy and again nine months after their child’s birth. Study author, Dr Lisa Underwood, says that while maternal antenatal and postnatal depression are recognised and known to be associated with poor outcomes for women and children, there has been little done to identify perinatal depression symptoms in men. “There is no screening for fathers before or after the birth of their children since they are not usually engaged in routine perinatal care. “In the present study of fathers, self-reported poor health and self-

18

perceived stress during the pregnancy were consistently linked to paternal depression during the pregnancy. “Additional risks only associated with paternal postnatal depression included a history of depression, unemployment, relationship status and family environments during the postnatal period. Of these, the strongest predictor of paternal depression was no longer being in a

relationship with the child’s mother,” says Dr Underwood. For more information on the study visit https://www.auckland.ac.nz/en/about/ news-events-and-notices/news/news2017/02/new-fathers-can-get-newbaby-depression-too.html

Keeping babies and toddlers safe - reducing the risk of serious falls By National Adviser Child Safety Wellington/Wairarapa Plunket Did you know that falls are the most common cause of accidental injury to littlies? Most falls aren’t serious – active children often fall over – however some falls can lead to long-term disability and we know this from hospital and ACC claim data.

20

 When carrying a baby or toddler down stairs have a hand free to hold the rail  Hold baby close, they can wriggle and fall or be dropped  Placing a barrier at the top and bottom of stairs reduces the chance of a fall  Attach window catches so they can’t fall out the window It isn’t always a fall from a high surface or down stairs that causes an injury. A fall from a lower height, particularly on to a hard surface can also be dangerous. Babies and young children develop fast, and this can take parents and carers by surprise. One minute baby isn’t rolling, then suddenly they are; or the toddler who couldn’t climb suddenly can. So how can you reduce the risk of a fall?

 If baby is on the floor, they can’t fall further! Change baby on the floor whenever possible  Always keep a hand on baby if they are on a change table, bed or other high surface and don’t leave them unattended, even for a minute  Fit soft corners (corner cushions) to sharp corners on tables and other sharp corners around the house  Always use the harness in the highchair, buggy or other nursery items.

Peer counsellors support breastfeeding mums

22

Breastfeeding mothers in Wairarapa have a great support network to ensure they and their baby can enjoy healthy breastfeeding, with 26 trained counsellors available for advice. There are 15 women providing mumto-mum support, six more who offer group session advice and a further five who offer support through their professional roles. Having trained counsellors available ensures Wairarapa mothers receive consistent, relevant and correct information to help them maintain their baby’s exclusively breastfed feeding programme for longer. “The peer counsellor training was initially set up by Breastfeeding Wairarapa because statistically we didn’t feel we were meeting the needs of the breastfeeding population at the 6 week, 3 month and 6 month target dates,” Michelle Thomas, Midwife Educator explains. “Our mums would start breastfeeding and be really determined to exclusively breastfeed but then, for whatever reason, some mums really start to struggle and would then consider other options of feeding. “Having mum-to-mum counselling and training key community members to be able to help was a natural next step to try and keep our babies breastfed.” Breastfeeding Wairarapa looked back to the basics, and encouraged breastfeeding-friendly cafes and public spaces and breastfeeding in the workplace guidelines in order to try and make it easier for mothers to continue breastfeeding their babies. “There used to be a lack of support for mothers to breastfeed. consultant, based at the DHB, but we now have a La Lache League representative locally. “The Peer Counsellor programme is a La Lache League initiative worldwide and we are pleased to now have a great, and very active, team here in Wairarapa,” says Julia Oldroyd, Peer Counsellor Programme Administrator.

Our mums would start breastfeeding and be really determined to exclusively breastfeed but then, for whatever reason, some mums really start to struggle and would then consider other options of feeding.”

Sarah Taylor-Waitere, a Public Health Adviser for Regional Public Health, says the funding for the peer counselling programme comes under the

Wairarapa Community Breastfeeding 3 Year Plan (2016-2019) and aims to improve breastfeeding statistics post six weeks. “Actions in the plan include the peer counselling programme. We have developed a resource to identify the counsellors by personal photograph and a short biography, which allows mothers to select a peer support that they may feel the most comfortable with. “We want to make breastfeeding as easy and as supported as we can to ensure Wairarapa mothers have all they need to be able to keep their babies exclusively breastfed for as long as possible. “We know it’s best for the baby, and so we need it to be good for the mother too,” said Sarah.

Dietary intake differs in infants who follow baby-led weaning University of Otago researchers have undertaken the first-ever study looking at what infants eat when they follow baby-led weaning. Study co-author and co-Principal Investigator, Dr Anne-Louise Heath, says that baby-led weaning (BLW) is becoming an increasingly popular alternative to spoon-feeding. BLW involves allowing infants from around six months of age to feed themselves all their foods as finger foods, preferably during family meals. “We found that infants following BLW were more likely to be exclusively breastfed to six months and then start solids - which is great news,” Dr Heath says. They were also more likely to eat meals with their family which should have long-term benefits as they grow. But they were eating more fat, and had lower intakes of iron, zinc and vitamin B12 than spoon-fed babies, she says.

spoon-fed group it was rusks, small pieces of meat, crackers and corn kernels.

The researchers observed that a worryingly high number of parents in the study which included both BLW and spoon-fed babies were offering foods thought to pose a choking risk.

“Supporters of BLW suggest that it allows the child to be in control of how much they eat as they were when they were breast or formula feeding.

For the BLW group the most common risk foods were raw vegetables, raw apple and dried fruit, while for the

“Some healthcare professionals have been concerned that this may lead to poorer nutrition and more choking in these infants,” Dr Heath says.

She advises families following BLW to take care to offer their infants a range of foods that are rich in iron, zinc and vitamin B12. “All parents should also be given advice on how to prepare foods in such a way that choking risk is minimised.”

A place for families to live and play at Riverstone Park The needs of families were very much in mind when Jennian Homes Wairarapa began designing Riverstone Park, its new development at Solway, Masterton. Riverstone Park features 52 sections, ranging in size from 586m2 to 1879m2, with homes already constructed on 20 of them in a variety of plans and prices. On the other sections, buyers can choose from one of Jennian’s range of plans or they can have Jennian’s design team build a home to their exact requirements. This allows

30

families to own a home exactly suited their requirements. The subdivision comes complete with all town services as well as fibre optic ultra-fast broadband so there will be no shortage of online connectivity for all family members. Approved new home purchasers can qualify for borrowing up to 95 percent which makes these homes attainable for families. Jennian Homes Managing Director Gareth Norris worked with Masterton District Council to leave an area of the development as a park for the community. “I just thought, how do you make it a better place to live? Now it is completed, it looks amazing.” The park is a large open area with newly planted trees including community fruit trees and a path lined with kowhai trees named “the kowhai walk”. A footbridge over the stream that runs through the development leads to a grass oval designed for families to play ball games on, complete with mounds for people to sit and watch. The park design was in collaboration

with contractor Dingo Nick Wairarapa and Rachel Callaghan Landscape Architect.

I just thought, how do you make it a better place to live? Now it is completed, it looks amazing.”

Landscape architect Rachel Callaghan says a key element to the park is the furniture which includes seats and picnic tables made from recycled timber from wharfs and railways.
