Welcome to the
OUR COVER BABY Abigail Beth Mason was born on 4th June 2018 to proud parents Greg and Shelley Mason and little sister to Dylan. Abigail arrived in fashion, waiting until the clock struck midnight on her mum’s birthday! She is a very happy and chatty baby who loves to dance and explore. Shelley and Greg are amazed with how quickly she is growing and proud of how clever and happy their baby girl is.
Welcome to our PAK’nSAVE Baby Book featuring 120 beautiful babies born in the Wairarapa in 2018. They won’t be babies for long. Far too soon, babies grow into toddlers, and preschoolers and then are off to school.
So it is important to cherish this brief moment of time with them, which is impossible to replicate in any other part of your life. “A baby is a dancing joy of life,” says American physician, philosopher, poet-seer, and author Debasish Mridha. A new-born baby also allows its parents, caregivers and families to experience that dancing joy of life and by opening their hearts to the open heart of their baby.
Scientist Nikola Tesla once described babies as a “marvellous little engine of inconceivable delicacy and complexity of construction, unlike any on earth, hitched to the wheel-work of the universe.”
These “inconceivable delicacies” require protection and nourishment. Many a parent has found that what they imagined to be a manageable task turns out to be a larger-than-life responsibility with 24-hour shifts and sleep deprivation. But as many a parent has found out, the rewards are immense. All the love you give them will be returned, with interest. Our thanks go to the parents who are sharing their jewels in this publication.

Parent groups
Becoming a new parent and raising children brings great changes to your life. Plunket can help you contact a parent group, where parents/caregivers gather with their children to meet other new parents and share information on parenting. Parent groups are also a great way to help children interact with each other and begin to develop their social skills. Other community groups offer an informal opportunity for parents to get together and learn from each other in a fun, relaxed environment. Visit www.plunket.org.nz

Baby safety around the home Every year in New Zealand over 13,000 children under five go to hospital with injuries and poisoning, says Plunket. Its website www. plunket.org.nz has top tips and a checklist to help keep your baby safe.

A few of the threats it highlights: STRANGULATION: Long cords and clothing ties can be dangerous for baby, getting caught around their neck and cause choking or strangulation. DROWNING: It only takes 5cm of water for a baby to drown in. It can happen silently and very swiftly. Never leave your baby alone near water. BURNS: A baby’s skin is very thin and burns easily. A single cup of hot water spilt over a baby is equal to a bucket of boiling water over an adult!

FALLS: Falls are the biggest cause of injury to babies. Your baby can wriggle, move and push against things, and could fall from any surface above ground level. POISONING: Keeping all poisons out of sight in locked cupboards.

Child care subsidy for three-to-five-year-olds
Depending on how much you earn and how old your children are, your family may be able to get help with the cost of childcare. All 3, 4, and 5-year-olds can get free early childhood education for 6 hours a day, up to 20 hours a week. If you have a dependent child who is under 5 (or under 6 if you get a Child Disability Allowance for them), you might be able to get a childcare subsidy. Healthy eating for breast feeding mums Eating a variety of healthy foods every day is important for breast feeding women, according to the HealthEd (www.healthed. govt.nz) which is full of useful information for pregnant women and new mums. It points out that iodine is an essential nutrient required by new mums, who need it in small amounts to support normal growth and development including normal brain development for the child. Requirements for iodine increase during pregnancy and while breastfeeding. Even with a well-balanced diet, it is difficult to get enough iodine from food alone. The website advises choosing foods that are important sources of iodine and taking a daily iodine-only tablet during the time that you are breastfeeding. Important sources of iodine in foods include well-cooked seafoods, milk, eggs, some cereals and commercially made bread (excluding organic and unleavened bread because they are not required to be made with iodised salt). HealthEd also points out that Vitamin D is needed for strong bones and joints as well as healthy muscle and nerve activity. While this is found in some foods, the main source of vitamin D in New Zealand is sunlight. Vitamin D is made in the body through the action of sunlight on the skin. Examples of foods that contain vitamin D are fresh and canned oily fish (tuna, sardines, salmon, herring, mackerel,

Looking after your child’s baby teeth can help ensure their adult teeth come out healthy and strong, advised the Ministry of Health. warehou), eggs and vitamin D-fortified yoghurts, milk, dairy desserts and margarines. Iron is important for healthy blood, HealthEd says. Iron in lean meats, chicken and seafood is absorbed well by the body. Eggs, cooked dried beans, peas and lentils, and nuts and seeds also contain iron, but the iron is not as easily absorbed. It advises breast feeding women to Include foods rich in vitamin C with meals to help absorb iron. Fresh vegetables and fruit, especially taro leaves (cooked), broccoli, tomatoes, oranges, kiwifruit, mangoes and pineapple, are rich sources of vitamin C. This is especially important for vegetarian and vegan women, who may find it hard to get enough iron. Women who are breastfeeding need milk and milk products as sources of protein, vitamins and minerals, especially calcium and iodine. HealthEd advises using reduced or low-fat milk, yoghurt and cheese. Calcium is also found in lower amounts in foods such as wholegrain bread, broccoli, canned salmon, canned sardines, spinach, baked beans and tofu. If you are drinking soy milk, choose one that is calciumfortified (check the label). If you follow a vegan diet, check that your soy milk has vitamin B12 in it. For information on food choices visit www.healthed.govt.nz
Your baby will start getting their first teeth at around six months. By the time they are two years old they will have their first set of teeth – 20 ‘baby’ teeth. The lower (bottom) front teeth usually come through the gum first. These are followed by the upper (top) front teeth. Many babies’ teeth come through without any problems, but for some the gums swell and become sore as teeth break through. Your teething baby may cry, have a slight fever, have red cheeks, drool, not eat or sleep well and want to bite something hard. If your baby is upset, gently rub their gums with a clean finger or the back of a cold spoon. You can also wrap ice cubes in a wash cloth and place the cloth on your baby’s cheek. Give your baby something to chew on, such as a clean teething ring. You can also buy teething gels from your chemist. If your baby has a lot of pain, bleeding or pus in their gums or swelling in the mouth or face, get help from a doctor or nurse or call Healthline (0800 611 116). These first teeth will help your baby to eat and speak well. Healthy baby teeth usually mean healthy adult teeth too, so it’s important that you look after your baby’s first teeth Source: www.health.govt.nz

Toilet Training
Children usually learn to use the toilet between 18 months and four years. Not all kids are ready at the same age. Your child may show signs that they are ready and there are things you can do to help them move out of nappies. Your child may be ready when they know they want to pass urine (wees) and be able to hold on long enough to make it to the toilet. Daytime control usually happens before night time control and it is normal for one in ten children to still be wetting their bed when they’re five years old. Your baby has an amazing brain, and starts learning right from birth. You are your child’s first and most important teacher and you help their brain grow through play and early learning, says the Ministry of Education. Early learning helps children to be confident and curious about the world. It also helps children do better when they go to school or kura. Your child learns through everything they do, see, feel, smell, taste and hear, everywhere they go, everyone who talks, smiles and plays with them. Babies, toddlers and young children learn through play. You are your child’s first and most important teacher and you help your child’s brain grow through play and early learning. Playing with your young child is the best thing you can do to support their learning. The Ministry’s new education portal has some great play ideas for the early learning years. on the website www.education.govt.nz

One of its suggestions is “Adventure and junk play - Aotūroa.” Children love to build their own creations using ‘junk’ materials. Junk resources are cheap and easy to find from the recycled, natural and man-made materials in the world around us. Junk play gives children many opportunities to experiment with the physical properties of objects. Adventure and junk play can help children to: ■ work together with others, share and take turns
■ supporting them to put their own ideas into practice, without taking over helping them sort out problems by encouraging respect and positive behaviour ■ creating a safe environment It’s a good idea to give children space when they are taking part in adventure and junk play as this will allow them to be as creative as they want. Ideas for equipment include boxes, cartons, cardboard ladders, planks, tubes, old blankets, hessian, ropes, carpet, dressup clothes, natural materials such as logs, flax, driftwood, stumps, and rocks. Books and storytelling - Pūrākau pānui pukapuka, are also a good way for children to learn, the Ministry of Education suggests Books and storytelling give children the opportunity to develop the knowledge, skills and attitudes they need to use complex symbol systems that make up our society. This includes the written word, visual images and oral communications. Reading, writing, listening, and talking form the basis of children’s literacy learning. Children need lots of language together with a wide variety of experiences. Sharing books and reading is a vital activity for children’s development. Children who experience and enjoy reading books with others develop a positive attitude towards books. This will help them when they learn to read.
■ develop their ideas in their own ways
REBEL ALEXANDRA GRAHAM DOB 21/08/18 WEIGHT 5lb 2oz Our honey Rebel
■ learn to solve problems, plan and remember ■ learn about fitting into spaces and mathematical ideas such as under, over, through and between ■ be creative and use objects and material in different ways. Adults can support children by: ■ talking with and listening to them ■ allowing them to explore at their own pace and ability ■ providing a wide range of equipment and resources.

Your nourishing nursery
There are certain things to keep in mind when decorating nursery. Keep everything you could possibly need within easy reach of the changing table - eg nappies, wipes, laundry basket, poop bucket, etc. Another is to avoid clutter. You will be carrying baby back and forth in the middle of the night so you don’t want to be tripping over. Have a heavy curtain so you can mimic night time at any time of the day. Buy a night light so you can see what you are doing without having to turn the main light on. This also adds a sense of security and can be a decorative item of the nursery. For the decoration of the nursery, pick a theme - it doesn’t have to be babyish but instead might be whimsical or colourful to create a positive ambience. This will allow the room to be suitable for the child through numerous stages of their life. It is quite possible to be abstract in one’s decoration of a nursery. For instance, you could have colourful photos or art that stir the imagination, but just as easily just a framed printed fabric, or perhaps a string of fabric pennants.
Grandparents raising grandchildren a unique role If you are a grandparent raising grandchildren, you are not alone. Grandparents Raising Grandchildren Trust New Zealand was founded by Diane Vivian as a not-forprofit organisation to provide nationwide support services to the around 7500 grandparents who are filling the parenting role for their grandchildren. The Wairarapa support group of Grandparents Raising Grandchildren has around 70 members, with its co-ordinator
Tere Lenihan certain there are many more living in the region. The support group has regular meetings which are an opportunity for grandparents to talk one-on-one or in a group with others in the same situation. Occasionally there is a guest speaker to talk on subjects such as law changes. Anyone who would like to make contact with the Wairarapa Grandparent Raising Grandchildren Support Group can contact Tere on 021 509 493 or 06 379 5407.
Babies don’t think in terms of their gender so you don’t need to stick to the gender stereotypes of blue and pink. You don’t need to buy everything for the nursery brand new, but items picked up at a garage sale or borrowed from friends may not meet current safety standards. Paint old furniture in fun colours and hand-painted designs. Paint patterns on the wall or on furniture with stencils.

Expired car seat
The Wairarapa Road Safety Council has seen a huge increase in expired and incorrectly fitted car seats in vehicle in Wairarapa. Children 0-7 years (or up to 148cm tall) are required by law to be restrained in an appropriate car seat. This means in order for it to be legal, it must meet manufacturer’s standards. This includes: ■ Installed correctly according to instruction manual that comes with the seat. If you have a tether strap attached to the seat (according to US/NZ/AUS safety standards), it must be anchored to the anchor bolt in the vehicle. If there is none in your particular make/model of car, then one must be installed. ■ Shown manufacture date either by sticker or etched circle markings in the back or underneath the car seat. Each brand of seat has a different expiry date. A full list can be found on the Wairarapa Road Safety Council website www.wairsc.org.nz There are very important safety reasons for placing an expiration date of six to 10 years after the date of manufacture. 1 Technology improves and standards change 2 Material wears down - especially belts and plastic 3 Models are only safety-tested for a typical lifespan 4 Older car seats may have been recalled by the manufacturer and if you have inherited someone else’s seat, how do you know this? 5 As designs change, manufacturers don’t want to maintain an inventory of older parts forever. You may not be able to get a replacement part past the expiration date. Your responsibilities as the driver (under the law), you must make sure that any child under seven years of age is properly restrained by an approved child restraint that is appropriate for the age and size of the child. The vehicle’s safety belt on its own is not an approved child restraint. Using the safest child restraint for your child is only going to protect your child if it is installed correctly. For information on child restraints, visit www. wairsc.org.nz/services/child-restraints There are also qualified child restraint technicians in Wairarapa at both of the Wairarapa Road Safety Council’s stockists of new car seats – The Warehouse Masterton and Farmers Masterton.

Reusable nappies With babies come nappies. A baby will use around 6000 nappies before they are toilet trained. Disposable nappies take 200 to 500 years to decompose. The skin of newly-born babies is still developing a protective outer layer until they are at least 12 months old.

Without this oily layer of protection they’re more sensitive to chemicals that come up against their skin in the cleaning products as well as soaps and shampoo. If you are using re-usable nappies, website www.naturebaby.co.nz suggests using its “wet soak method” of soaking nappies for a minimum of four to six hours in either baking soda or vinegar.

While you take care of your newborn, we’ll take care of your “other” baby!
“We recommend using a quarter of a cup to a 10 litre bucket of water. This is a natural and economical alternative to products that contain bleaching agents and can destroy the life span of the nappies.”

REASONS OF VEHICLE SAFETY BELT FIT Car seat belts are designed to fit adults, not children. The lap portion of the seat belt can ride up over the soft abdominal area & the shoulder portion can cut across the child’s face & neck. In a crash, this can cause lifethreatening injuries to a child if the child survives. The poor fit of the seat belt can be easily corrected through the use of an appropriate car seat.
