MASTERTON DISTRICT COUNCIL - PROUD SUPPORTER OF

#BRINGITTOCOLOMBO

We are Local Government WWW.MSTN.GOVT.NZ

A helping hand from Masterton District Council Masterton District Council’s contribution to the Trust House Netball Wairarapa Centre has included land use, financial and staff support. The Council’s role in the reinvigoration of the facilities at the Colombo Road netball courts was always going to be significant, given it owns the land the courts stand on which is an important community asset. Council is the biggest financial contributor to project to the amount of $750,000. With such a significant investment, the Council contributed four members to the Bring It To Colombo Trust with Masterton Mayor Lyn Patterson as Deputy Chair, joined by councillors Graham McClymont and Bex Johnson, and Andrea Jackson, Manager Community Facilities and Activities for the Council. Masterton District Council also contributed the time of two of its staff members to the Trust David Paris, Manager Finance, and Peter Whisker, Senior Project Management Adviser. A 2014 Sports and Facilities Plan report commissioned by the Council identified netball as requiring urgent attention in terms of an infrastructure upgrade, backing up a similar report a year earlier. So Council was keen to see the project go ahead, says Andrea Jackson Mayor Patterson was more than a figurehead for the Trust.

Masterton Mayor Lyn Patterson, also Deputy Chair of the Bring It To Colombo Trust, speaks at the opening of the Trust House Netball Wairarapa Centre in on March 8th. “She kept her participation at the highest level and was involved in the funding applications which lent more weight.”

One of the things that impressed Andrea the most about the project was how much of a community effort it was.

“I was particularly impressed with the calibre of the people involved and their commitment - their drive and passion to get funding and commitment to good governance and management of the facility so it is financially sustainable.

“I think it’s a fantastic facility and another example of our community coming together to support the netball community to build a new facility. “The whole project had a lot of volunteer involvement from chopping down the trees at the

David and Andrea were also on the Trust’s Finance Subcommittee.

With the assistance of the Masterton District Council and the Bring It To Colombo Trust, Councillor Frazer Mailman, who has a background in both sports and governance, is now working with Netball Wairarapa to ensure sound governance and management frameworks are in place. Masterton District Council and all those involved in this project are committed to future proofing the facility.
