Classic car chase film THE DRIVE-IN FEATURE Thursday evening’s drive-in movie at Te Kairanga Vineyard in Martinborough is “Dirty Mary, Crazy Larry”.

unable to catch Larry, Mary, and Deke after they ditch the Impala for a 1969 Dodge Charger R/T 440 at a flea market.

Starring Peter Fonda and Susan George, Dirty Mary, Crazy Larry is a classic 1974 American car chase film.

Film goers will be able to watch the film from their cars or bring their fold out chairs/bean bags/picnic blankets to sit and watch the movie.

Two NASCAR hopefuls, driver Larry Rayder and his mechanic Deke Sommers, successfully execute a supermarket heist to finance their jump into big-time auto racing. In making their escape, they are confronted by Larry’s one-night stand, Mary Coombs. She coerces them to take her along for the ride in their souped-up 1966 Chevrolet Impala. The unorthodox sheriff, Captain Everett Franklin, obsessively pursues the trio in a dragnet, only to find his outmoded patrol cars

The screen will be set up on the grass hill overlooking the cellar door so everyone can get a good view. Beat Kitchen and Kiwi Kai will be providing food and drink, and the vineyard’s cellar door will be open. THE FILM STARTS AT 7PM.

2016 Dodge Not every car in Cruise Martinborough is vintage - as exemplified by Ange Boland’s 2016 Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat. “I lived in Auckland for 46 years. In March this year I quit my 15-year career as a customs officer and bought a cattery in Masterton - hence the number plate “ELLCAT”. “I contracted Bryce Williams from Westcoast Classic Imports in Tauranga to source and import a 2016 Hellcat for me when I moved to Wairarapa. “He found this one for sale in New York. There were a few others that we looked at, but this one was the best value for the mileage and so on. “The colour is Go Mango. I really wanted an orange one!”

8

Challenger SRT Hellcat ONLY THE BEST FOR THIS HELLCAT The factory supercharged 6.2 litre Hemi can go from zero to 60mph in 3.6 seconds, and do a quarter mile in approximate 10.8 seconds, with a top speed of around 200mph. The Hellcat has been the most powerful production muscle car, only superseded by Dodge’s Challenger SRT Demon, with 808 horsepower, which was unveiled at the New York Auto Show in April 2017, Ange points out. Owning the Hellcat fulfils a lifetime dream for Ange. “When I was in my teens my friends all had V8s. We used to go cruising in my friend’s ’57 Chevy down Queen St and around the bays in Auckland on Friday nights. The guys were all mechanics, so I learned a lot when they tinkered with their cars.

Love your

“When I left high school, I had a panel beating apprenticeship jacked up, but the Department of Labour insisted that the owner install a female toilet and my apprenticeship fell through as it just wasn’t financially possible for him to do that. “Kind of ironic, as I grew up with my father and brother and we only had one toilet so I was used to sharing with males. I was devastated, and ended up getting a job as a courier driver rather than pursue a career of working on cars. “Since then I’ve always dreamed of having my own V8. It was a tough decision deciding on what to get. I always loved the classics. However now that I’m a bit older and a bit of a wuss, having working air-con and other bells and whistles was also appealing.

“I almost bought a new Camaro, but a mechanic friend of mine said “get a Hemi, you’ll never regret it”. That put me on the path of looking at all the Challenger models - there are 10 2016 models - and I thought, if I’m going to spend the money I may as well get the best. “The idea that I’d probably be the only female in New Zealand to have a Hellcat was also tempting. Also, I own a cattery, so only fitting to have a Hellcat! “It’s an insane car, and it makes me smile every time I drive it.”

1966 XR Falcon Matt Wooller’s 1966 XR Falcon Sport Coupe originally hails from Washington state in the US, the Masterton resident purchasing it off Trade Me in 2016. “I was looking for a Ford classic car or a hot-rod with a Ford motor that had some difference to others that were out there - I hadn’t see a factory two-door of this model before.” The Falcon was produced by Ford from 1960 to 1970 across three generations, Matt says. “It was a sales success for Ford initially, outselling rival compacts from Chrysler and General Motors introduced at the same time. “This model is the third generation (1966 -1970) with a long-hood/shortdeck look, much in the Mustang vein.

Once Matt purchased the car he shipped it to Montana where the original six cylinder and trans were removed.

Coming from a mechanical background Matt has always had an interest in classic cars and has another Ford as well as two classic motorcycles.

An early eighties Mustang 302 V8 and C4 Trans were fitted using all factory parts.

This will be Matt’s first experience as a participant at Cruise Martinborough although he has been to all the Masterton Motorplex drag meetings and car displays since owing the car. He has plans to take it further afield in future. “This is a driven car - I don’t take it places on a trailer, I drive it.”

1973 Ford Escort MK1 DRIVING A NEW ZEALAND ICON Palmerston North resident Shaun Duncan had been hunting for the right Ford Escort at the right price for some time when he came across his 1973 MK1 two-door on Trade Me. “ It started life as an 1100. The Gisborne owner had bought it for him and his son to do up but had lost interest, so was perfect for what I wanted. “I had one when I was younger, and have always had a soft spot for them. And they seem to be a bit of a New Zealand icon.” The Ford Escort has had a full restore, with rust removed and the engine replaced with a Cortina two litre with mild cam and five-speed gearbox. It’s low and has the RS front panel fitted, “just to be a bit different,” and it’s painted bionic Ford blue with replica RS wheels.

As a mechanic’s son, and a member of the Wanganui Road Rodders, Shaun has always had a passion for cars, “especially old school stuff”. “My first classic was a 1600 MK1 escort two-door, but this one is my first project car and took four years to build, and now shares the garage with my next project, a 1974 XA Falcon sedan. I’ve also previously owned a 69 Cougar GT and a 64 Fairlane compact.” 2016 was the first time Shaun and wife Jo-Anne attended Cruise Martinborough. “We loved it so much we are coming back. As a member of the Wanganui Road Rodders, the Escort is out and about most weekends attending car shows and events every chance we get we just love the car scene. The Escort is a fun car and gets a lot of attention, and we take it everywhere.”

1978 Chevy Impala FULFILS A PERSONAL PROMISE Petone resident Solomon Daniel had been searching online for over a year for the right car for himself and his sons to have as their cruiser when he came across his Impala on Trade Me in October 2016. The 1978 Chevy Impala station wagon with a 350 cubic inch engine had been in New Zealand all its life and had previously been a hearse in Otago before the sellers had brought it to Whanganui to restore and modify it. “I wanted something practical that could be taken to car shows, cruise down town, but also be used as a daily driver or to take camping. “I grew around Holden V8s as my father was a mechanic. I wanted my sons to enjoy the same memories I had as a child.”

Holden Monaro (308 engine). “It was stolen over 20 years ago after I had just completed restoring it and I promised myself that I would not leave this planet without owning another classic car.

Among its significant features are an authentic lowrider on a full set of air bags. “The ride is impressive as well as practical as it allows you to take the car most places other lower classic cars can’t go because of its awesome clearance. It raises to 4WD height. It’s an ex-hearse so it is extra-long. The new back seat has been added from a Chevy Nova.”

“Like many, it has always been a passion of mine so it was only a matter of time and money before I had a another in my possession. “

A night of music gold Good As Gold, Friday night’s entertainment at the Pukemanu Tavern, are three seasoned musos who love to rock the house. “Our set is really eclectic,” says Andy Eldred who is on vocals and guitar. “We try to read the room and tend to go all over the place musically through the night but mainly we play stuff people have usually heard before. We may do it a new way but people always enjoy it because we put our heart and soul into the music. We have a lot of fun when we play and I think it makes our shows fun.” The other members are Dave Mills on keyboard and vocal, and the legendary Vic Singe on drums and vocal. Good as Gold have played many of the pubs and clubs around Wairarapa over the years, and always rock the house.

Humble Husky GET A NEW LEASE OF LIFE Stevan and Nicki Fisk live in Palmerston North but run with the Wanganui Road Rodders. The couple bought their 1956 Hillman Husky Mk1 body, converted to Commer Cobb body, for their son Matt “when he was 14 years old, as a project to work on together . It’s been in our family for 12 years now,” says Stevan. The Husky only had one previous owner - a Hastings teacher. It was New Zealand-new, assembled by Todd Motors in Porirua. “It had the last of the 1235cc Flathead 4 cylinders designed in 1933 powering it. It was all pre-war BSF thread . The original clutch pedal linkage was a short piece of chain and it was hand-painted with a brush by the original owner.” The Huskys were a budget dual purpose vehicle, developed to run delivery chores and double as a family wagon in the weekends, says Stevan. “The MK1s were built from left over car parts and the doors still have the cut outs for the trafficators from the 1940s cars. “In Europe they were often used as pie wagons and butchers delivery vehicles. Exported to the USA they died quickly and some were turned into gassers (hot rods).” The couple bought it as they like old cars and it was suitable for working on with Matt. “But eventually after taking it to school for years Matt needed more reliable transport for university and we decided to keep it. “We swapped it back off him for a Corolla. Nicki and I took it to the Beach Hop with the original four banger and after that painfully slow trip the tired old dog had to be either upgraded to keep up with traffic or put down. We called that upgrade “Project Bad Dog” which lead to the number plate.” All the running gear has been totally replaced. The engine is a vintage V8-60 derived Flathead V8 from a 1958 Vedette in California. The engine drives via a Toyota 5 speed gearbox to a narrowed Falcon diff. It has 4 wheel disk brakes

and many other fabricated parts to make it all work together to tow the couple’s 1956 Replica Teardrop camping trailer which Stevan designed and built in his garage. “Teardrops were camping trailers designed in the 1940s by returning GIs from wood and surplus aircraft aluminium to take their families camping along Route 66 etc. They were smaller and different from caravans and basically a bed on wheels with an open ‘galley’ in the rear. “I made up my own design after researching them on the Internet and not liking any plans I saw. I built every single part of it from welding up the chassis to building the body from Marine ply to wiring and painting it. “I even built the trunk on the front to look like an 1800s Steamer Sea chest - It houses the battery and gas bottle” “The front suspension is a work of art made by Dave Sales of Jalopy engineering in Blenheim. The rear side widows are filled in. The engine is extensively modified to speedway

specifications - with all the tricks of the day and even has an external drive oil pump. The Edlelrock twin carb set up was off a 1930s Hydroplane.”

“Although we love American cars too, the Husky was built in the Kiwi spirit and tradition of New Zealand in the 1960s. Most young guys didn’t have USA cars and we had to use what we had lying around and hand make all our parts.”

Stevan has always had classic cars and hot rods since he was 15. “I think I got the bug hanging round with Willy Pelzers and Mike Madden in Wanganui. I built an awesome 1934 Ford Hiboy coupe in the 1980s and the Husky is an interim project while I save for my next 34 Salt Lakester Coupe.” Stevan says the couple are “very humbled

1949 Fordson Pickup MONTANA CHEV PICKUP NOW GOES WHEREVER THE ROAD TAKES IT While some owners of classic cars alter their vehicles, for Jason Lake of Napier, his 1951 Chevrolet 3100 Pickup is fine just the way it is. “Due to the originality of this particular truck it will stay as it was manufactured - 100 percent original, running straight six with four speed floor change and six volt electronics.” Jason came across the Chev pickup on Ebay “while searching for a few more vehicles to add to my collection. I was specifically looking for a Chevrolet Pickup.” The Chev was originally from Montana where it has spent most of its life. “Kenneth Siebel, who is father-in-law to Lieutenant Governor of California Gavin Newsom, purchased it from the original owner back in 1994 and did a gentle restoration of the truck and kept it on his “Bitterroot Ranch” in Montana until it was shipped to California in 2016. I imported it to New Zealand in May 2017. Jason chose it because of its originality and because it was a five window cab. Another feature is its ranch signwriting. Other than an overhaul of the brakes and a rebuilt generator nothing else has been required. Jason was introduced to classic cars from a young age due to his father’s interests. “As a teenager I spent a lot of time enjoying wrenching on various cars. “My first was a 1956 Humber 80 as soon as I passed my driver’s license test. “From that point I have always owned a classic vehicle. “My passion now is American and European marques. Jason enjoys cruising in his pickup with his partner “where the road takes us together”.

Plenty of Fury & SOUND FOR WELLINGTON COUPLE It was love at first sight when Justin Boobyer and Rach Hyett first spied their 1967 Plymouth Fury. “It was over 15 years ago. We were having beers at our mate’s flat on Abel Smith Street (Wellington) and saw the car parked across the road. We kept hassling the guy until he sold it to us as he wanted to buy a house!” To be specific the car is a 1967 Plymouth Fury III, four-door hardtop, 468cu big block mopar (stroked 400 block). Canadian assembled, so right-hand drive, it came to New Zealand brand new and had lived most of its life in Wellington “hence it was a rust bucket by the time we picked it up.” “It was big and pillar-less and we loved

the lines – soon to be a bad ass cruiser we could fit all our mates in on Friday nights,” Justin reminisces. When asked if the Wellington couple had done much work on it, Justin answers “Hell yeah – where do we start! The car is on its third motor. There have been many paint jobs from all the rust repairs over the years. It’s fully custom to Rach and my tastes – a little gangsta, a little old skool, some skulls, and lots of noise.” Among the Fury’s significant features Justin cites are air bags and 4-link rear suspension, full custom leather interior, a kicker sound system, many custom parts and a big block New Zealand-new Chrysler – “nothing off the shelf fits!”

when he met Rach. “She insisted on an old school V8 which didn’t take much convincing. Rach has had her share of old classics, mostly Fords, but they never lasted long.” This is the couple’s second Cruise Martinborough. “We thoroughly enjoyed our first one so we’re heading back for 2018 – the cruise down the drag strip with our dog Dodge was an awesome highlight.” The couple attend car events all around New Zealand. “We love cruising and burn-outs. You can’t put a price on the people you meet, the friends you make, the places you go and check out – it’s a lifestyle that’s for sure.”

Justin confesses he was into rotaries

Chevy Cruising Tauranga couple Steve and Leanne Milne imported their 1956 Chev 210 two-door post from the United States in 2011. “Trans America shipping found the car for us,” recalls Steve. “We were looking for either a 55 or 56 two-door project and the 56 seemed to be the best deal we had seen . “The American owner had started doing the car up. It had new brakes, a 350 fitted, and some Cragar wheels fitted. Steve had previously owned and raced an altered drag car, starting with a small block Ford engine and ending up with an injected big block Chev engine. Then the couple built a 69 Camaro door slammer with a blown alcohol 427 which ran a quickest of 8.00 at 170 mph.

“We had been drag racing for many years, but decided to take a break and thought building a street car that we could go to a few more events with mates would be a good idea. “We originally planned to give the car a quick tidy-up and start cruising but I got carried away, so we spent the next four years rebuilding everything - and I mean everything - not one nut or bolt got left out.” The couple modified the chassis, fitting triangulated four bar suspension with nine-inch diff and coil over shocks all around. The car has been mini tubbed to fit the 18 x11 inch wheels on the rear . “We had a brand new engine built for the car, starting with a new dart block, alloy heads, new crank, rods and pistons. It is 400 cubic inches and should make around 450 hp .” Steve and Leanne had a full custom leather interior fitted, and also made the engine bay a bit of a feature “by hiding anything that we could to give it a very

clean look.” The car is painted in a custom mix of orange and silver. This includes everything under the car as well. Leanne owned a Ford Pop with a 350 in it for several years but this was sold to help fund things with the Chevy. The couple also have a 55 two-door post that they are about to start a full custom build on. “This will be our first time at Cruise Martinborough but we have heard great things about the event from friends who have been, so we have a group of friends coming down from Tauranga with us. We have also been to Americana /Beach Hop and many other club runs around the area.”
