WELCOME
Cruise Martinborough turns nine! The world events have changed the way we do things for the time being. No need to get into it as we all have different views, I’m just happy we can get out for a few days and do what we enjoy in the beautiful Wairarapa. Sadly this year we have had to move away from the Martinborough Square as restrictions were too heavy for an event like ours to merge freely with the general public. We hope to come back to the town square in the near future. Tauherenikau Racecourse will host us for the entire show day this year and with some very exciting entertainment on the cards. We know the Martinboorugh Square is a great place to watch the hundreds of cars go past and we invite all spectators to join us at the race course for a full day of family fun. You can expect to see the cars on show, some will
even partake in a little grasskahna and if water levels allow, jet sprint demonstrations throughout the day. The Miss Cruise Martinborough competition will be on and we welcome all participants to get involved.
If one or two days are changed because of the current restrictions, please understand and we will do our best to make it happen. On the plus side, we have some great locations to visit, live entertainment to enjoy and great food, drinks and cars to enjoy. Check out the programme for details on each day and the events planned. Welcome back to Cruise Martinborough for the ninth year running. We trust you’ll have a wonderful time. Wairarapa has a reputation as one of the most vehicle friendly districts in New Zealand, with plenty of picturesque scenery and a variety of roads to choose from. Despite the pressures of Covid-19, Masterton District Council has continued to put an emphasis on ensuring our roads are maintained and improved.

And, if you’re brave enough, try out our fabulous revamped skatepark. Also looking great at this time of year are our recreation trails. They are a nice way to stretch the legs, from the Lake of Remembrance, near Queen Elizabeth Park, to longer strolls along the banks of the Waipoua River.

One of our major projects last year was construction of a new roundabout on Te Ore Ore Road – it’s something new to be aware of if you’re heading out to the coast, and includes much safer crossing points for pedestrians. You’ll also see roading improvements on
Aratoi Wairarapa Museum of Art and History remains a treasure for Masterton, and a visit to Hood Aerodrome is worthwhile to check out what our aerial enthusiasts are up to. Enjoy your stay!

MARTINBOROUGH’S SOCIAL HUB The Pukemanu Bar & Eatery in Martinborough’s Square will again be the social hub for Cruise Martinborough. It will be the location for Orientation & Programme collection on Wednesday at 5pm, live entertainment on Friday evening from 7pm, and 8pm on Saturday night, and Sunday Brunch and Prize Giving from 10am on Sunday.

A stellar line-up of country music talent The 2022 Wairarapa Country Music Festival is set to be the biggest yet. Featuring 13 acts over three days and suitable for the whole family, the festival is jam-packed with musical talent, bringing some of New Zealand’s finest country artists to the Tauherenikau Racing and Event Centre. This year the evening shows on Friday and Saturday will each host a different line-up, plus there will be line-dancing workshops, walk-up singing opportunities and a visit from Cruise Martinborough. Your 2022 Wairarapa Country Music Festival line-up includes Jackie Bristow, back from Nashville; Barry Saunders, lead singer of The Warratahs; Melissa & The Dr – Melissa Partridge was the overall winner of the 2021 Gold Guitar Awards; Dolly and Kenny take the stage in the oneof-a-kind Dolly Parton Experience; Always the life of the party,

A new sponsor, new judges and new organiser for Miss Cruise Martinborough 2022 Now in its fourth year, Miss Cruise Martinborough has, for the first time its own sponsor – “The Beauty School Dropouts”. Started by Fran Robertson and Monique Kimber-Bell in 2015, The Beauty School Dropouts caters to the market in New Zealand for vintage and pin-up styling. One of its stylists is Nicole Halliday who lives on a lifestyle property out at Longbush, east of Martinborough. A mother of two, when Nicole is not working for the Beauty School Dropouts, she’s working in public relations for the Defence Force, or shooting in her makeover photo studio – The Fire Inside. Nicole was crowned Miss Cruise Martinborough in 2021, and is back again this year as its organiser.
With her connection to The Beauty School Dropouts, it is no surprise who Nicole found to be the ideal judges for this year’s competition – Fran, and two of her current team of stylists, Sarah Bauer and Kate McAulay. They’re all Miss Pinup New Zealand alumni, so they know just what to look for in Miss Cruise Martinborough 2022. The Beauty School Dropouts will contribute to the prize hamper for Miss Cruise Martinborough, which will also include a makeover photo session with The Fire Inside Photography. The Beauty School Dropouts is also donating the sashes to be worn by the winner and runner-up, which are beautifully handmade by Fran.
As in previous years, The Beauty School Dropouts Miss Cruise Martinborough competition will be a relaxed pin-up competition where competitors simply just dress up for the occasion. This year’s competition will run pretty much exactly as last year. Arrive before 11am, look for the table near the Cruise Martinborough trailer to add your name to the list, have your photo taken by Glynn Henderson Photography in front of one of the beautiful cars, and judging will be done by assessment of the photos. No scary stage or catwalk for this competition! The entrants will be advised on the day where to meet for the group photo and prizegiving.

JUDGES Nathan Thomas Born, bred, and still living in Lower Hutt, Nathan’s interest in cars goes back to when he was a kid. “I had a neighbour that had an early Corona that had a 351 Windsor in it, and I spent many an hour over the road at his house, learning all about cars and street machines/hot-rods with him and his mates. Nathan and head judge Todd Wylie have known each other since school. “In our early teenage days we would spend Friday and Saturday

nights driving around Wellington. We both have a very keen interest in cars, and as we have both aged, our interests have remained similar.” An automotive technician by trade, Nathan appreciates all models, makes, and genres. “I really enjoy seeing something that’s outside the norm, and appreciate different or unusual engineering ideas. “I like it when you can tell the owner has put heart and soul in to their ride.”

Todd Wylie Cruise Martinborough welcomes back regular head judge Todd Wylie as one of its three judges for 2022.
Ben Martin Ben Martin has been in the paint and panel industry for 25 years and is owner of Customs Bodyshop in Upper Hutt. When judging the cars in Cruise Martinborough, Ben will be looking for “creativity, finish, and the all-round look of the vehicle.”
As editor of NZV8 magazine for 14 years and chief car wrangler for TV3’s Muscle Garage before stepping into various roles within the vehicle safety arena for LVVTA and Waka Kotahi, Todd knows a thing or two about what constitutes a quality car. Backing up his “on the job” experience are his own multiple award-winning builds, including his ‘Necessary Evil’ 1956 Cadillac which was a previous winner of Cruise Martinborough’s sought after Top
Entry award (prior to his judging involvement). Todd has an eye for things that are different, and always encourages vehicle owners to break the mould a bit, rather than follow the same old path. Of course to attract his attention, vehicles must be well-engineered to back up their good looks, but that’s not to say he only has an eye for ‘big budget’ builds.

Third time lucky for Ian Smith and his Corvette This will be the first time that Ian Smith has attended Cruise Martinborough with his own vehicle. “I was all paid up and booked in for 2020, only to have the clutch fail just in time to not be able to make it with the car. “Then in 2021, again all paid up and booked in, only to have the diff blow and the required parts not arriving in time.
“I love the C4 Corvette – I’ve owned three – and was chasing a performance/drag racing example that I could race.

A muscle car with the best features of yesterday and today Mark Gallagher bought his 2015 Dodge Challenger Hellcat brand new after it came off the assembly line in the United States and was imported by 4Guys Autobarn in Hamilton. “I was drawn to it after seeing the Hellcat come on the market in the US and I have always liked the Challengers. “It has over 700hp and is a true US muscle car, but being a late model it has all the features that come
with a new car. I share all of the adventures with my love Bronwyn!” Based in New Plymouth, the couple have attended the last two Cruise Martinboroughs. “We really love the event and the region. It is the second classic car the couple have owned after previously driving a turquoise 1978 Holden Kingswood wagon for 15 years.

An ermine white beauty Ōmokoroa couple Mark Fransen and Midge Munro wanted a big event to enjoy with their family this summer. And they like the line-up of events to attend at Cruise Martinborough. So they have come down from their home near Tauranga in their 1968 Chevrolet Impala coupe which the couple only received last October. The Impala arrived in New Zealand from California in June, after Matt Webb from Motorhead Classics in Hamilton found it and imported it for the couple. “We bought it because we like the beautiful shape of the fastback coupe,” says Mark. 20

Searching for old love leads to a new romance Peter and Nina Cummings had been searching for a car they sold 21 years ago - a 1962 Plymouth Belvedere - but fate had other plans for the couple, as Peter recounts. “We did actually find her - two days before we came across our present girl. “But the Belvedere was not in a good state and the owner would not sell her back. “We came across a 1968 Plymouth Fury 3 Convertible on a classic cars for sale website, via Facebook. We were the first to respond. “She was located in Hastings at a car dealers. She had been a trade-in deal. “We had already three months prior booked a BnB stay in Hastings for Nina’s birthday. “We went and looked at her, drove her, and fell in love with her on Nina’s actual birthday. We purchased her that very day. Nina was also born in 1968. “It was right time, right place, and right car. Everything on her is original. With her sleek body, and everything on her original, everything about her was mind blowing.” The car was built in Belvedere, Illinois, on the 25th April 1968 and Imported to New Zealand in 2017. This is the first time the Martinborough couple will be attending Cruise Martinborough as participants, rather than spectators. “It’s an amazing show. We are looking forward to finally being a part of it.” 22
